RESUMO

The generation of functional genomics datasets is surging, because they provide insight into gene regulation and organismal phenotypes (e.g., genes upregulated in cancer). The intent behind functional genomics experiments is not necessarily to study genetic variants, yet they pose privacy concerns due to their use of next-generation sequencing. Moreover, there is a great incentive to broadly share raw reads for better statistical power and general research reproducibility. Thus, we need new modes of sharing beyond traditional controlled-access models. Here, we develop a data-sanitization procedure allowing raw functional genomics reads to be shared while minimizing privacy leakage, enabling principled privacy-utility trade-offs. Our protocol works with traditional Illumina-based assays and newer technologies such as 10x single-cell RNA sequencing. It involves quantifying the privacy leakage in reads by statistically linking study participants to known individuals. We carried out these linkages using data from highly accurate reference genomes and more realistic environmental samples.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are common products of normal cellular metabolism, but their elevated levels can result in nucleotide modifications. These modified or noncanonical nucleotides often integrate into nascent DNA during replication, causing lesions that trigger DNA repair mechanisms such as the mismatch repair machinery and base excision repair. Four superfamilies of sanitization enzymes can effectively hydrolyze noncanonical nucleotides from the precursor pool and eliminate their unintended incorporation into DNA. Notably, we focus on the representative MTH1 NUDIX hydrolase, whose enzymatic activity is ostensibly nonessential under normal physiological conditions. Yet, the sanitization attributes of MTH1 are more prevalent when ROS levels are abnormally high in cancer cells, rendering MTH1 an interesting target for developing anticancer treatments. We discuss multiple MTH1 inhibitory strategies that have emerged in recent years, and the potential of NUDIX hydrolases as plausible targets for the development of anticancer therapeutics.

This study performed microbial analysis of nutrient film technique (NFT) hydroponic systems on three indoor farms in Singapore (the "what"). To justify the necessity of sanitizing hydroponic systems, strong biofilm-forming bacteria were isolated from the facility and investigated for their influence on Salmonella colonization on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coupons in hydroponic nutrient solutions (the "why"). Finally, sanitization solutions were evaluated with both laboratory-scale and field-scale tests (the "how"). As a result, the microbiome composition in NFT systems was found to be highly farm specific. The strong biofilm formers Corynebacterium tuberculostearicum C2 and Pseudoxanthomonas mexicana C3 were found to facilitate the attachment and colonization of Salmonella on PVC coupons. When forming dual-species biofilms, the presence of C2 and C3 also significantly promoted the growth of Salmonella (P < 0.05). Compared with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and sodium percarbonate (SPC), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) exhibited superior efficacy in biofilm removal. At 50 ppm, NaOCl reduced the Salmonella Typhimurium, C2, and C3 counts to <1 log CFU/cm2 within 12 h, whereas neither 3% H2O2 nor 1% SPC achieved this effect. In operational hydroponic systems, the concentration of NaOCl needed to achieve biofilm elimination increased to 500 ppm, likely due to the presence of organic matter accumulated during crop cultivation and the greater persistence of naturally formed multispecies biofilms. Sanitization using 500 ppm NaOCl for 12 h did not impede subsequent plant growth, but chlorination byproduct chlorate was detected at high levels in the hydroponic solution and in plants in the sanitized systems without rinsing. IMPORTANCE: This study's significance lies first in its elucidation of the necessity of sanitizing hydroponic farming systems. The microbiome in hydroponic systems, although mostly nonpathogenic, might serve as a hotbed for pathogen colonization and thus pose a risk for food safety. We thus explored sanitization solutions with both laboratory-scale and field-scale tests. Of the three tested sanitizers, NaOCl was the most effective and economical option, whereas one must note the vital importance of rinsing the hydroponic systems after sanitization with NaOCl.

In the 1940s and 1950s, researchers seeking safe and novel ways to eliminate airborne pathogens from enclosed spaces, investigated glycol vapours as a method of disinfection. More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for a non-toxic aerial disinfectant that can be used in the presence of people. This scoping review is intended to analyse the early and more recent literature on glycol disinfection, scrutinizing the methodologies used, and to determine if the use of glycols as modern-day disinfectants is justified PRISMA-ScR guidelines were used to assess the 749 articles retrieved from the Web of Science platform, with 46 articles retained after the search strategy was applied. Early studies generally demonstrated good disinfection capabilities against airborne bacteria and viruses, particularly with propylene glycol (PG) vapour. Vapour pressure, relative humidity, and glycol concentration were found to be important factors affecting the efficacy of glycol vapours. Contact times depended mainly on the glycol application method (i.e. aerosolization or liquid formulation), although information on how glycol efficacy is impacted by contact time is limited. Triethylene glycol (TEG) is deemed to have low toxicity, carcinogenicity, and mutagenicity and is registered for use in air sanitization and deodorization by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Glycols are also used in liquid formulations for their antimicrobial activity against a wide range of microorganisms, although when used as a non-active excipient in products, their contribution to antimicrobial efficacy is rarely assessed. The appropriate use of liquid glycol-containing formulations was found to positively impact the antimicrobial capabilities of disinfectants when used at temperatures <0, food preservatives, and dental medicaments. Providing modern delivery technology can accurately control environmental conditions, the use of aerosolized glycol formulations should lead to successful disinfection, aiding infection prevention, and control regimens.

Cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae, is a severe diarrheal disease that necessitates prompt diagnosis and effective treatment. This review comprehensively examines various diagnostic methods, from traditional microscopy and culture to advanced nucleic acid testing like polymerase spiral reaction and rapid diagnostic tests, highlighting their advantages and limitations. Additionally, we explore evolving treatment strategies, with a focus on the challenges posed by antibiotic resistance due to the activation of the SOS response pathway in V. cholerae. We discuss promising alternative treatments, including low-pressure plasma sterilization, bacteriophages, and selenium nanoparticles. The paper emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary approaches combining novel diagnostics and treatments in managing and preventing cholera, a persistent global health challenge. The current re-emergent 7th pandemic of cholera commenced in 1961 and shows no signs of abeyance. This is probably due to the changing genetic profile of V. cholerae concerning bacterial pathogenic toxins. Given this factor, we argue that the disease is effectively re-emergent, particularly in Eastern Mediterranean countries such as Lebanon, Syria, etc. This review considers the history of the current pandemic, the genetics of the causal agent, and current treatment regimes. In conclusion, cholera remains a significant global health challenge that requires prompt diagnosis and effective treatment. Understanding the history, genetics, and current treatments is crucial in effectively addressing this persistent and re-emergent disease.

Citrus canker is a disease caused by the gram-negative bacterium Xanthomonas citri subp. citri (X. citri), which affects all commercially important varieties of citrus and can lead to significant losses. Fruit sanitization with products such as chlorine-based ones can reduce the spread of the disease. While effective, their use raises concerns about safety of the workers. This work proposes essential oils (EOs) as viable alternatives for fruit sanitization. EOs from Cymbopogon species were evaluated as to their antibacterial activity, their effect on the bacterial membrane, and their ability to sanitize citrus fruit. The in vitro assays revealed that the EOs from C. schoenanthus and C. citratus had a lower bactericidal concentration at 312 mg L-1, followed by 625 mg L-1 for C. martini and C. winterianus. Microscopy assay revealed that the bacterial cell membranes were disrupted after 15 min of contact with all EOs tested. Regarding the sanitizing potential, the EOs with higher proportions of geraniol were more effective in sanitizing acid limes. Fruit treated with C. shoenanthus and C. martini showed a reduction of ∼68% in the recovery of viable bacterial cells. Therefore, these EOs can be used as viable natural alternatives in citrus fruit disinfection.

The emergence of disinfectant-resistant microorganisms poses a significant threat to public health. These resilient pathogens can survive and thrive in hospital settings despite routine disinfection practices, leading to persistent infections and the potential for outbreaks. In this study, we investigated the impact of 11 different commercial sanitizers at various concentrations and exposure times on biofilms consisting of clinical and nosocomial environmental isolates of Candida parapsilosis and Staphylococcus aureus. Among the sanitizers tested, 0.5% and 2.0% chlorhexidine (CLX), 10% polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP-I), a disinfectant based on quaternary ammonium compound (QAC), 2% glutaraldehyde, and 0.55% orthophthalaldehyde (OPA) demonstrated efficacy against both C. parapsilosis and S. aureus in monospecies and mixed biofilms. Analysis showed that 0.5% CLX and 10% PVP-I had fungicidal and bactericidal activity against all biofilms. However, the sanitizer based on QAC and 0.55% OPA proved to be bacteriostatic and fungicidal against both monospecies and mixed biofilms. In mixed biofilms, despite the last four sanitizers exerting fungicidal action, the reduction of fungal cells was approximately 4 log10 CFU/mL compared to monospecies biofilms, showing that the interaction provided more resistance of the yeast to the sanitizer. Formation of mixed biofilms in hospital settings can create an ecological niche that enhances the survival of pathogens against routine sanitization procedures. Therefore, effective sanitization practices, including regular cleaning with effective sanitizers, should be implemented to prevent C. parapsilosis/S. aureus biofilm formation in healthcare settings.

MOTIVATION: The epidemic at the beginning of this year, due to a new virus in the coronavirus family, is causing many deaths and is bringing the world economy to its knees. Moreover, situations of this kind are historically cyclical. The symptoms and treatment of infected patients are, for better or worse even for new viruses, always the same: more or less severe flu symptoms, isolation and full hygiene. By now man has learned how to manage epidemic situations, but deaths and negative effects continue to occur. What about technology? What effect has the actual technological progress we have achieved? In this review, we wonder about the role of robotics in the fight against COVID. It presents the analysis of scientific articles, industrial initiatives and project calls for applications from March to now highlighting how much robotics was ready to face this situation, what is expected from robots and what remains to do. RESULTS: The analysis was made by focusing on what research groups offer as a means of support for therapies and prevention actions. We then reported some remarks on what we think is the state of maturity of robotics in dealing with situations like COVID-19.

Contaminated food contact surface is one of the most important transmission routes for foodborne pathogens. Stainless steel is one such food-contact surface that is widely used in food-processing environments. The present study aimed to evaluate the synergistic antimicrobial efficacy of a combination of tap water-based neutral electrolyzed water (TNEW) and lactic acid (LA) against the foodborne pathogens Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Listeria monocytogenes on stainless steel. The results revealed that simultaneous treatment with TNEW (ACC of 4.60 mg/L) and 0.1% LA (TNEW-LA) for 5 min resulted in 4.99-, 4.34-, and >5.4- log CFU/cm2 reductions in E. coli O157:H7, S. Typhimurium, and L. monocytogenes on stainless steel, respectively. Of these, 4.00-, 3.57-, and >4.76-log CFU/cm2 reductions in E. coli O157:H7, S. Typhimurium, and L. monocytogenes, respectively were exclusively attributed to the synergistic action of the combined treatments after factoring out the reductions due to individual treatments. Furthermore, five mechanistic investigations revealed that the key mechanisms underlying the synergistic antibacterial effect of TNEW-LA were reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, cell membrane damage resulting from membrane lipid oxidation, DNA damage, and inactivation of intracellular enzymes. Overall, our findings suggest that the TNEW-LA combination treatment could be effectively used in the sanitization of food processing environments, especially the food contact surfaces, to control major pathogens and enhance food safety.

Appropriate management is necessary to mitigate the environmental impacts of wastewater sludge. One lesser-known technology concerns the use of solidified CO2 for dewatering, sanitization, and digestion improvement. Solidified CO2 is a normal byproduct of natural gas treatment processes and can also be produced by dedicated biogas upgrading technologies. The way solidified CO2 is sourced is fully in line with the principles of the circular economy and carbon dioxide mitigation. The aim of this review is to summarize the current state of knowledge on the production and application of solid CO2 in the pretreatment and management of sewage sludge. Using solidified CO2 for sludge conditioning causes effective lysis of microbial cells, which destroys activated sludge flocs, promotes biomass fragmentation, facilitates efficient dispersion of molecular associations, modifies cell morphology, and denatures macromolecules. Solidified CO2 can be used as an attractive tool to sanitize and dewater sludge and as a pretreatment technology to improve methane digestion and fermentative hydrogen production. Furthermore, it can also be incorporated into a closed CO2 cycle of biogas production-biogas upgrading-solidified CO2 production-sludge disintegration-digestion-biogas production. This feature not only bolsters the technology's capacity to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of digestion processes, but can also help reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions, a crucial advantage in terms of environment protection. This new approach to solidified CO2 generation and application largely counteracts previous limitations, which are mainly related to the low cost-effectiveness of the production process.

Bacterial biofilm formation in low moisture food processing (LMF) plants is related to matters of food safety, production efficiency, economic loss, and reduced consumer trust. Dry surfaces may appear dry to the naked eye, however, it is common to find a coverage of thin liquid films and microdroplets, known as microscopic surface wetness (MSW). The MSW may favor dry surface biofilm (DSB) formation. DSB formation is similar in other industries, it occurs through the processes of adhesion, production of extracellular polymeric substances, development of microcolonies and maturation, it is mediated by a quorum sensing (QS) system and is followed by dispersal, leading to disaggregation. Species that survive on dry surfaces develop tolerance to different stresses. DSB are recalcitrant and contribute to higher resistance to sanitation, becoming potential sources of contamination, related to the spoilage of processed products and foodborne disease outbreaks. In LMF industries, sanitization is performed using physical methods without the presence of water. Although alternative dry sanitizing methods can be efficiently used, additional studies are still required to develop and assess the effect of emerging technologies, and to propose possible combinations with traditional methods to enhance their effects on the sanitization process. Overall, more information about the different technologies can help to find the most appropriate method/s, contributing to the development of new sanitization protocols. Thus, this review aimed to identify the main characteristics and challenges of biofilm management in low moisture food industries, and summarizes the mechanisms of action of different dry sanitizing methods (alcohol, hot air, UV-C light, pulsed light, gaseous ozone, and cold plasma) and their effects on microbial metabolism.

The high rate of transmission of the COVID-19 virus has brought various types of disinfection techniques, for instance, hydrogen peroxide vaporization, microwave generating steam, UV radiation, and dry heating, etc. to prevent the further transmission of the virus. The chemical-based techniques are predominantly used for sanitization of hands, buildings, hospitals, etc. However, these chemicals may affect the health of humans and the environment in unexplored aspects. Furthermore, the UV lamp-based radiation sanitization technique had been applied but has not gained larger acceptability owing to its limitation to penetrate different materials. Therefore, the optical properties of materials are especially important for the utilization of UV light on such disinfection applications. The germicidal or microorganism inactivation application of UV-C has only been in-use in a closed chamber, due to its harmful effect on human skin and the eye. However, it is essential to optimize UV for its use in an open environment for a larger benefit to mitigate the virus spread. In view of this, far UV-C (222 nm) based technology has emerged as a potential option for the sanitization in open areas and degradation of microorganisms present in aerosol during the working conditions. Hence, in the present review article, efforts have been made to evaluate the technical aspects of UV (under the different spectrum and wavelength ranges) and the control of COVID 19 virus spread in the atmosphere including the possibilities of the human body sanitization in working condition.

Sanitizing railway stations is a relevant issue, primarily due to the recent evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic. In this work, we propose a multi-robot approach to sanitize railway stations based on a distributed Deep Q-Learning technique. The proposed framework relies on anonymous data from existing WiFi networks to dynamically estimate crowded areas within the station and to develop a heatmap of prioritized areas to be sanitized. Such heatmap is then provided to a team of cleaning robots - each endowed with a robot-specific convolutional neural network - that learn how to effectively cooperate and sanitize the station's areas according to the associated priorities. The proposed approach is evaluated in a realistic simulation scenario provided by the Italian largest railways station: Roma Termini. In this setting, we consider different case studies to assess how the approach scales with the number of robots and how the trained system performs with a real dataset retrieved from a one-day data recording of the station's WiFi network.

Ultraviolet (UV) light has previously been established as useful method of disinfection, with demonstrated efficacy to inactivate a broad range of microorganisms. The advent of ultraviolet light-emitting diodes provides advantages in ease of disinfection, in that there can be delivery of germicidal UV with the same light unit that delivers standard white light to illuminate a room. Herein we demonstrate the efficacy and feasibility of ultraviolet light-emitting diodes as a means of decontamination by inactivating two distinct virus models, human coronavirus 229E and human immunodeficiency virus. Importantly, the same dose of ultraviolet light that inactivated human viruses also elicited complete inactivation of ultraviolet-resistant bacterial spores (Bacillus pumilus), a gold standard for demonstrating ultraviolet-mediated disinfection. This work demonstrates that seconds of ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LED) exposure can inactivate viruses and bacteria, highlighting that UV-LED could be a useful and practical tool for broad sanitization of public spaces.

Motivated by the growing availability of personal genomics services, we study an information-theoretic privacy problem that arises when sharing genomic data: a user wants to share his or her genome sequence while keeping the genotypes at certain positions hidden, which could otherwise reveal critical health-related information. A straightforward solution of erasing (masking) the chosen genotypes does not ensure privacy, because the correlation between nearby positions can leak the masked genotypes. We introduce an erasure-based privacy mechanism with perfect information-theoretic privacy, whereby the released sequence is statistically independent of the sensitive genotypes. Our mechanism can be interpreted as a locally-optimal greedy algorithm for a given processing order of sequence positions, where utility is measured by the number of positions released without erasure. We show that finding an optimal order is NP-hard in general and provide an upper bound on the optimal utility. For sequences from hidden Markov models, a standard modeling approach in genetics, we propose an efficient algorithmic implementation of our mechanism with complexity polynomial in sequence length. Moreover, we illustrate the robustness of the mechanism by bounding the privacy leakage from erroneous prior distributions. Our work is a step towards more rigorous control of privacy in genomic data sharing.

This study assessed the norovirus (NoV) surrogate bacteriophage MS2 transfer from stainless steel, glass and low-density polypropylene surfaces to raspberry and pitanga fruits. The effect of sodium hypochlorite (100 ppm, 1 min) on MS2 survival on whole fruits, the MS2 survival in sanitized fruits and derived pulps during frozen storage, and in response to preservation technologies (heat, organic acids and salts) was also assessed. The highest (p < 0.05) viral transfer (%) was observed from glass and stainless steel (∼90%) to raspberry, and from glass and polypropylene (∼75%) to pitanga, after 60 min of contact. Sodium hypochlorite reduced (p < 0.05) MS2 titer by 3.5 and 3.8 log PFU/g in raspberry and pitanga, respectively. MS2 decreased (p < 0.05) up to 1.4 log PFU/g in frozen stored sanitized fruits (whole fruits and pulps) after 15 days, with no further changes after 30 days. Thermal treatments reduced MS2 titer (p < 0.05) in both fruit pulps. MS2 inactivation was higher in pitanga pulp. The addition of ascorbic acid, citric acid, sodium benzoate, or sodium metabisulfite had little effect (<1 log PFU/g) on MS2 concentration in either fruit. These results may inform NoV risk management practice in processing and handling of fruits.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are a major group of human pathogens and may persist on both abiotic and biotic surfaces. In this report, two blue-light prototypes were used to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy against STEC on food processing surfaces (stainless steel and polyoxymethylene plastic). Investigation using a light-bulb prototype (Prototype 1 at 405 nm, 26 mW/cm2) showed significant antimicrobial effects in nutrient deficient condition but not in nutrient rich condition, demonstrating that the presence of organic matters from rich nutrient medium was thought to be light-absorptive and reduce the bactericidal efficacy of blue light, as evident from the lack of bacterial reduction when suspended in cooked meat broth. An advanced (surface-mounted-diode) light panel, Prototype 2 with high light intensity (405 nm; 50 mW/cm2) was able to inactivate a cocktail of seven STEC strains (from seven major serotypes O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, O145 and O157) on type 304 stainless steel (1.66 log10 CFU) and polyoxymethylene plastic (4.25 log10 CFU) at light dosages of 720 and 45 J/cm2, respectively when cells were illuminated in a nutrient-deficient medium (M9 broth). Post-treatment, no STEC cells were recoverable from plastic, both when tested on plates (agar or petrifilms) and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In contrast, surviving colonies were identified on samples taken from stainless steel, albeit only four strains could be detected by PCR analysis - those belonging to serotypes O26, O45, O103 and O157 - which indicated that the susceptibility of STEC to blue light varied across the tested strains.

Biosafety practices, such as bioexclusion via sanitization, can prevent the spread of infectious soilborne threats such as the clubroot pathogen Plasmodiophora brassicae. Twenty-three chemical disinfectants were evaluated for efficacy against P. brassicae resting spores. Evans blue staining was used to directly measure the viability of P. brassicae resting spores after 20-min exposures to 10 concentrations of each of the 23 chemical disinfectants. Only nine disinfectants were capable of >95% inactivation, and only five were capable of inactivating >99% of resting spores. Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) and Spray Nine were the most effective disinfectants for inactivation of clubroot resting spores. AES 2500, SaniDate, and ethanol also inactivated >99% of resting spores but only at very high concentrations. A time course experiment showed that 10- to 12-min contact time was sufficient for ≥95% resting spore inactivation with Spray Nine and sodium hypochlorite, but ≥30-min contact was required for other disinfectants evaluated. These results will assist in guiding management recommendations for sanitization aimed at bioexclusion and biocontainment of P. brassicae.

BACKGROUND: Environmental microbial exposure plays a role in immune system development and susceptibility to food allergy. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate whether infant pacifier use during the first postnatal year, with further consideration of sanitization, alters the risk of food allergy by age 1 year. METHODS: The birth cohort recruited pregnant mothers at under 28 weeks' gestation in southeast Australia, with 894 families followed up when infants turned 1 year. Infants were excluded if born under 32 weeks, with a serious illness, major congenital malformation, or genetic disease. Questionnaire data, collected at recruitment and infant ages 1, 6, and 12 months, included pacifier use and pacifier sanitization (defined as the joint exposure of a pacifier and cleaning methods). Challenge-proven food allergy was assessed at 12 months. RESULTS: Any pacifier use at 6 months was associated with food allergy (adjusted odds ratio, 1.94; 95% CI, 1.04-3.61), but not pacifier use at other ages. This overall association was driven by the joint exposure of pacifier-antiseptic use (adjusted odds ratio, 4.83; 95% CI, 1.10-21.18) compared with no pacifier use. Using pacifiers without antiseptic at 6 months was not associated with food allergy. Among pacifier users, antiseptic cleaning was still associated with food allergy (adjusted odds ratio, 3.56; 95% CI, 1.18-10.77) compared with no antiseptic use. Furthermore, persistent and repeated antiseptic use over the first 6 months was associated with higher food allergy risk (P = .029). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of a pacifier-antiseptic combination being associated with a higher risk of subsequent food allergy. Future work should investigate underlying biological pathways.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to examine the inactivation of Salmonella enterica (50 µL; 109 CFU g-1 ), Listeria monocytogenes (50 µL; 109 CFU g-1 ), and murine norovirus (MNV-1; 50 µL; 107 50% tissue culture infectious dose (TCID50 ) mL-1 ) on whole and fresh-cut strawberries after 2 min disinfection treatments (water (H2 O), chlorine 200 mg L-1 (NaClO), water-assisted ultraviolet-C (UV-C) (WUV), and the combination WUV and 40 mg L-1 of PA (WUV + PA)) in a water tank (15 L) equipped with 4 UV-C lamps (17.2 W each), and after 7 days of cold storage (4 and 10 °C). For MNV-1, dry UV-C treatment (DUV) was also tested. For all UV-C treatments, an irradiation dose of 1.3 kJ m-2 was used. RESULTS: When strawberries were washed with WUV, L. monocytogenes and S. enterica were reduced by 2.8 and 2.2 log CFU g-1 , respectively. The addition of 40 mg L-1 of PA to WUV (WUV + PA) increased the reduction range of L. monocytogenes and S. enterica by 1.9 and 0.8 log, respectively. Regarding the wash water, no pathogens were recovered after the WUV + PA treatment (detection limit 50 CFU mL-1 ). Depending on storage conditions (7 days at 4 or 10 °C), reductions observed were 0.5 to 2.0 log for S. enterica and 0.5 to 3.0 log for L. monocytogenes. The reductions in MNV-1 titer after disinfection treatments ranged from 1.3 to 1.7 log. No significant differences between storage conditions were observed for MNV-1: titers did not decline or were reduced up to 0.3 log after 7 days of cold storage. CONCLUSION: The three-way action for disinfecting strawberries by UV-C irradiation and PA, plus the physical removal of the microorganisms by agitated water, are effective against foodborne pathogens on strawberries and water wash. During storage, WUV had a larger impact on the inactivation kinetics of S. enterica. Storage had little impact on MNV-1 inactivation. © 2022 The Authors.
