BACKGROUND: Dry eye disease (DED) includes neurosensory abnormalities as part of its multifactorial etiology. Nerve growth factor is important for maintaining corneal nerve integrity and wound healing. Cenegermin (recombinant human nerve growth factor) is a topical biologic that promotes corneal healing in patients with neurotrophic keratitis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate efficacy and safety of cenegermin in moderate-to-severe DED and identify an optimal dosing strategy. METHODS: This was a phase II, multicenter, randomized, double-masked, vehicle-controlled, dose-ranging clinical trial in patients with moderate-to-severe DED, including Sjögren's DED (NCT03982368). Patients received 1 drop of cenegermin 3 times daily (t.i.d.; 20 mcg/mL), cenegermin 2 times daily (b.i.d.; 20 mcg/mL) and vehicle once daily, or vehicle t.i.d. for 4 weeks. Follow-up continued for 12 additional weeks. The primary endpoint was change in Schirmer I score from baseline to week 4. Other key endpoints included rate of responders (Schirmer I test > 10 mm/5 min) after treatment and change in Symptoms Assessment iN Dry Eye (SANDE) scores from baseline to end of follow-up. A 1-sided test (α = 0.025) was used to evaluate statistical significance. RESULTS: At week 4, mean changes in Schirmer I scores were not statistically significantly different in either cenegermin group versus vehicle (cenegermin vs vehicle [treatment difference; 95% CI]: t.i.d., 2.60 mm and b.i.d., 3.99 mm vs 1.68 mm [t.i.d.: 0.93; -1.47 to 3.32, P = 0.078; b.i.d.: 2.31; -0.08 to 4.70, P = 0.066]). More patients responded to treatment with cenegermin t.i.d. and b.i.d. versus vehicle (t.i.d.: 25.9% [21/81, P = 0.028]; b.i.d.: 29.3% [24/82, P = 0.007] vs 11.9% [10/84]), with statistical significance (set at P < 0.025) observed in the b.i.d. group. Only cenegermin t.i.d. yielded statistically significant (P < 0.025) reductions in SANDE scores versus vehicle, which were sustained up to the end of follow-up (P value range, 0.002-0.008). Eye pain, primarily mild and transient, was the most frequently observed treatment-emergent adverse event with cenegermin. Similar results were observed in patients with Sjögren's DED. CONCLUSIONS: Cenegermin was well tolerated and although this study did not meet its primary endpoint, significant improvement in patient-reported symptoms of dry eye was observed through follow-up. Larger studies evaluating cenegermin in patients with DED are warranted. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT03982368; registered May 23, 2019.

This study aimed to compare the effect of intranasal (IN) and intramuscular (IM) administration of butorphanol and zolazepam-tiletamine (ZT) combination on intraocular pressure (IOP) and tear secretion (TS) in rabbits. Fourteen healthy male New Zealand White rabbits weighing 3.05 ± 0.72 kg, aged between 1 and 2 years old, were included in the study. Animals randomly received 0.5 mg/kg butorphanol and 15 mg/kg ZT combination either with IN or IM administration. IOP and TS were measured at baseline (T0), and followed by 5, 15, 30, 45, and 60 min after drug administration. The sedation variables, the time to onset of sedation, duration of sedation, and sedation scores were also recorded. The route of administration for the butorphanol and ZT combination had no significant effect on the mean IOP (p = .301) and TS (p = .445). Furthermore, there were no significant changes observed in the IOP (p = .472) and TS (p = .348) over time. The time to onset of sedation was earlier in the IN group (4.57 ± 0.79 min) than in the IM group (5.86 ± 0.9 min; p = .0004). The duration of sedation was significantly longer for IM (57.43 ± 3.41 min) compared with IN (45.0 ± 1.91 min; p < .0001). No significant difference in the sedation score was observed between groups at all time points. In conclusion, both IN and IM administration of the butorphanol and ZT combination in rabbits had similar effects on IOP and TS.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to detect and describe ocular abnormalities in a population of Turkmen horses. ANIMALS STUDIED: A total of 55 Turkmen horses (33 mares and 22 stallions) from one herd were evaluated in this study. PROCEDURE(S): Demographic data (Age, Sex, Coat color) were recorded. All animals underwent complete ophthalmic examination. The Schirmer tear test -I (STT-I) was performed for all horses prior to other diagnostic tests. Neuro-ophthalmic examinations (menace response, dazzle reflex, pupillary light reflex, maze test, and visual tracking) were carried out in different lighting situations (bright and dim lights). Slit lamp biomicroscopy, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, fluorescein staining, and tonometry were performed for each horse. RESULTS: The mean (standard deviation) age of horses was 5.7 (4.6) years (range of 1-17 years). In total, 18 horses (32.7%) had ocular-related lesions. Cataract, iris hyperpigmentation and corneal edema were the most identified conditions in the horses of this study. CONCLUSIONS: About one-third of studied horses had at least one ocular abnormality. No ocular abnormalities attributed to the distinct cream/gold coat color were identified, which the Turkmen horse is known for.

OBJECTIVES: To determine normal ocular parameters of the MacQueen's bustard (Chlamydotis macqueenii) and describe ophthalmic lesions in a captive bred population. ANIMALS STUDIED: Captive breeding population of 257 Macqueen's bustards. METHODS: All birds were screened for ocular abnormalities using direct ophthalmoscopy. Abnormalities were photographed. Normative values for Schirmer tear test-1 (STT-1), applanation tonometry, aerobic and anaerobic bacterial culture, fungal culture, and transcorneal ocular ultrasonography were derived from multiple cohorts of clinically normal adult birds. Five birds with ocular pathology also underwent transcorneal ultrasonography. Statistical comparisons for normative values between OD and OS, and males and females were made using a paired t-test or Mann-Whitney U-test, with a significance level of p < .05. RESULTS: Mean tear production based on Schirmer tear test 1 (STT-1) was 10.16 ± 4.61 mm/min (3-21 mm/min). Mean intraocular pressure (IOP) was 12.42 ± 4.94 mm Hg (5-26 mm Hg). Staphylococcus species were the most isolated bacteria from the conjunctival surfaces of normal birds (85%). Significant differences were found in transcorneal ultrasonographic measurements between males and females for axial globe length (p = .032), vitreous body depth (p = .049) and lens thickness (p = .0428). Corneal fibrosis was the most observed ocular abnormality amongst eyes with pathological changes (39%). CONCLUSIONS: Schirmer tear testing, tonometry and transcorneal ultrasound can easily be utilized in MacQueen's bustards and provide reproducible results. Normal parameters for these tests were determined, and common pathological ocular changes were described in this species.

OBJECTIVE: To document ocular lesions and establish ophthalmic diagnostic test reference values in a colony of African green monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus). ANIMALS STUDIED: Fifty one geriatric (GAGM, 19-30 years old), 10 adult (AAGM, 5-9 years old) and 10 juvenile (JAGM, <2 years old) African green monkeys housed in a single Caribbean research colony. PROCEDURES: Ocular biomicroscopy, indirect fundoscopy, Schirmer tear test (STT), rebound tonometry (TonoVet®) and corneal fluorescein staining were performed. Mixed ANCOVA tests were performed to compare STT and IOP between groups. RESULTS: Common ocular lesions in GAGM included vitreal degeneration (27/51, 51/102 eyes) and cataracts (21/51, 32/102 eyes). Vitreal degeneration was also common in AAGM (8/10, 16/20 eyes) and infrequent in JAGM (3/10, 6/20 eyes). Cataracts were not present in any JAGM or AAGM. All eyes in all three groups had perilimbal corneal pigmentation and faint lace-like anterior corneal stromal opacification. Median (range) STT values were 16.0 (18) mm/min in GAGM. Mean (SD) STT values were 14.2 (4.6) mm/min in AAGM, and 8.9 (3.4) mm/min in JAGM. Median (range) IOP values were 16.5 (27) mmHg in GAGM. Mean (SD) IOP values were 18.0 (2.8) mmHg in AAGM, and 14.1 (2.2) mmHg in JAGM. JAGM had significantly lower STT and IOP values compared to AAGM (p = .0449, .0057, respectively) and GAGM (p = .0002, .0130, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Spontaneous ocular lesions were common in geriatric monkeys in this research colony. IOP and STT values were lower in juvenile African green monkeys relative to adult or geriatric animals.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether botulinum toxin is effective and safe for the treatment of epiphora, and to compare its utility in functional versus non-functional epiphora using both qualitative and quantitative methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were divided into two groups (functional and non-functional epiphora) according to the presence of lacrimal drainage obstruction. All patients were injected with 2.5 units of botulinum toxin into the palpebral lobe of the lacrimal gland, and improvement in epiphora and quality of life were assessed both objectively and subjectively using Schirmer's I test, indoor and outdoor Munk scores, TEARS score, watery eye quality of life score, and tear meniscus measurements at pre-injection, and 1, 3, and 6 months post-injection. Functional and non-functional epiphora groups were compared. RESULTS: Botulinum toxin was injected into 72 lacrimal glands of 65 patients with functional and non-functional epiphora. In both the functional and non-functional epiphora groups, the mean Schirmer's I test value, indoor and outdoor Munk scores, TEARS score, watery eye quality of life score, tear meniscus height, depth, and area values improved significantly at 1, 3, and 6 months after injection compared with pre-injection values (p < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences in mean Schirmer's I test, tear meniscus height, depth, and area values between the functional and non-functional epiphora groups at 1, 3, and 6 months after botulinum toxin injection (p < 0.05). In the functional epiphora group, a greater proportion of patients reported improvement than in the non-functional group. All complications were minor and resolved within 2 weeks after the injection. CONCLUSION: Botulinum toxin injection into the lacrimal glands of patients with functional and non-functional epiphora was a simple, effective, and safe treatment. In addition to qualitative methods, quantitative methods, such as tear meniscus measurement, provided direct evidence that symptomatic improvement occurred more in those with functional versus non-functional epiphora after botulinum toxin injection.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between prolonged face mask use and ocular surface health utilizing conjunctival impression cytology, the Schirmer test, the tear break-up time (TBUT) test, and the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire. METHODS: In this cross-sectional prospective study, individuals who used face masks for at least eight hours per day for at least six months were compared to healthy volunteers who used face masks for no more than one hour per day. Each participant completed an OSDI questionnaire. The Schirmer test (under anesthesia), the TBUT test, and conjunctiva impression cytology analysis according to the Nelson classification method were performed on each participant. RESULTS: This study included 102 (49 male, 53 female) face mask users with an average age of 33.29 ± 7.71 years and 110 (60 male, 50 female) healthy controls with an average age of 32.96 ± 7.10 years (p = 0.746). The total OSDI score was significantly higher in face mask users than the control group (25.18 ± 3.54 vs 9.46 ± 2.13, p < 0.001). The mean Schirmer test value and TBUT were significantly lower in the study group than the control group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in total score and stage of the Nelson classification system (p < 0.001, and p = 0.024, respectively). All conjunctiva impression cytology assessments, including cellularity, cell-cell contact, nucleus/cytoplasma ratio, goblet cell amount, and metaplasia, revealed statistically significant deterioration in the study group compared to the control group (p < 0.001, p = 0.025, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: The prolonged use of face masks leads to dry eyes. The findings of conjunctiva impression cytology indicate the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of mask associated dry eye.

Pterygium is a common inflammatory-proliferative disease characterized by the invasion of degeneratively altered fibrovascular tissue into the cornea. This literature review analyzes the etiological factors and pathogenetic concepts of its development, describes modern methods of diagnostics and surgical treatment of pterygium, and pays particular attention to the assessment of structural and functional changes in the cornea occurring during the growth of pterygium and after its excision.

The tear film forms a protective barrier between the ocular surface and the external environment. Despite its small volume, recent advancements in preanalytical and analytical procedures have enabled its in-depth analysis using multiple approaches. However, the diversity of tear film collection methods and the lack of standardization in pre-analytical methods represent the main obstacles to reproducible results and comparison among different studies. In this study, we first improved the pre-analytical procedures for the extraction of various molecular entities from Schirmer strips (ScS). Subsequently, our investigation focused on analyzing the molecular variances that might occur between two primary tear collection methods: capillary tube (CT) and ScS. Additionally, we examined different parts of the ScS to underscore these variations, which could serve as crucial factors for developing a standardized, optimized protocol for sample processing. Our results show that the inclusion of surfactants in the extraction process enhanced both the yield of protein extraction and the number of proteins identified in ScS, by effectively lysing the cells and improving the solubility of several intracellular proteins. In addition to proteins, nucleic acids could also be recovered for gene expression analyses, particularly from the bulb region of the ScS which is placed in the cul-de-sac. Despite their diluted nature, extracts from ScS remain a suitable material for retrieving tear proteins such as IL-17A at levels as low as the fg/mL range, thanks to highly sensitive immunoassays. Collection methods can affect measured tear protein levels. Lactoferrin is found in higher percentages in capillary electrophoresis analysis of tears collected using ScS compared to tears collected by CT (39.6 ± 4.8% versus 31 ± 4.4%).

BACKGROUND: According to the literature review, this is the first study investigating tear production (TP) and intraocular pressure (IOP) in the Pygoscelis penguins living in their natural habitat. The study aimed to establish normal values for standard ocular tests in the genus Pygoscelis, namely, the Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae), gentoo (Pygoscelis papua), and chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarctica) penguins, in four different islands of Antarctica. Sampling was made by specifically using the left eye of the penguins. The Schirmer's tear test type I (STT-I) and the Tonovet® (rebound tonometer) were used to measure the TP and the IOP, respectively. RESULTS: The mean TP and IOP values of 129 Adélie, chinstrap, gentoo, and 120 adult Adélie, gentoo penguins were determined as 10.2 ± 4.0 mm/min and 38.9 ± 13.2 mmHg, respectively. No statistical difference was detected between the penguin species for the mean IOP values, while the difference was determined in all the locations. However, statistical differences in the mean TP values were determined between all locations. CONCLUSION: The results of this study provide a reference range of Schirmer's tear test (STT) and IOP values in Pygoscelis penguins and show that the IOP is significantly affected by locations. This result can be attributed to the harsh climatic conditions of the Antarctic Peninsula that change very quickly. The described data may help diagnose clinical pathological findings in Pygoscelis penguins. The STT and rebound tonometry appears to be safe and reproducible methods in Pygoscelis penguins, as the results were obtained quickly and were well tolerated by the birds. Based on our results, we propose that similar studies can be initiated in crowded colonies of three penguin species of this genus on the Antarctic Peninsula, the southern Shetland Islands, and other frequently visited islands in Antarctica.

PURPOSE: Due to technological advancements, surgical invasiveness has been reduced. However, cataract surgery has been implicated in causing postoperative inflammation, including dry eye syndrome. The innate immune system may be involved in postoperative inflammation, and complement activation could potentially play a crucial role in defense against pathogens, homeostasis, and wound healing. To investigate changes in the tear film complement activation products (CAPs) and ocular surface after vitrectomy combined with cataract surgery. METHODS: Forty-three patients (23 women; median age, 69 years) were enrolled in this prospective study and underwent phacoemulsification and vitrectomy. We measured Schirmer's test (ST) and CAPs in the tears at baseline (the day before surgery), 4 days and 1 month after the surgery. Tears were collected in microtubes. The CAPs in the tear fluid were analyzed by cytometric bead array. RESULTS: The median ST (8.5 mm) at baseline increased to 16 mm at 4 days ( P < 0.001) and 10 mm at 1 month (P = 0.44). The C3a levels (1202 pg/ml) at baseline increased to 2753 pg/ml at 4 days (P < 0.001), and 1763 pg/ml at 1 month (P = 0.049). The C4a levels (476 pg/ml) at baseline increased to 880 pg/ml at 4 days (P < 0.001), and 657 pg/ml at 1 month (P = 0.013). The C5a levels (22.6 pg/ml) at baseline increased to 470.9 pg/ml at 4 days (P < 0.001), and 38.3 pg/ml at 1 month (P = 0.0048). The surgical eyes were divided into the short ST group (≦ 10 mm, n = 22) and long ST group (> 10 mm, n = 21) based on the preoperative ST values. At 1 month postoperatively, the C3a levels were 2194 pg/ml in the preoperative short ST group and 1391 pg/ml in the long ST group, with significantly higher C3a concentrations in the short ST group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The CAPs levels in tears increased after vitrectomy combined with cataract surgery. A preoperative deficit in tear secretion might induce prolonged complement activation and delayed recovery of ocular surface parameters postoperatively.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the chronic effects of oral cannabidiol (CBD) use on tear production, intraocular pressure (IOP), and concentration of CBD in tears of healthy dogs. ANIMALS STUDIED: Eighteen healthy research Beagles. PROCEDURES: This was a masked, placebo-controlled, randomized prospective study. Eighteen dogs were randomly assigned to three groups (six dogs per group) based on daily dosage of oral MCT oil (placebo), CBD 5 mg/kg, and CBD 10 mg/kg. Schirmer tear test (STT-1) and IOP were measured twice daily (7 am and 7 pm) every 4 weeks for 36 weeks. Week 36 tears were collected and analyzed for CBD concentrations (ng/mL) using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. A mixed linear model was used as the statistical method and p-value <.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: No significant differences were found between placebo vs. 5 mg/kg vs. 10 mg/kg for STT-1 or IOP (AM and PM). CBD was detected in 10 out of 11 (91%) viable tear samples receiving 5 mg/kg or 10 mg/kg dosages. One sample in the 5 mg/kg group had inadequate tear volume for analysis. The CBD concentration in tears was at or below the lower limit of quantification in placebo group, 4.12-11.2 ng/mL for the 5 mg/kg group, and 6.22-152 ng/mL for the 10 mg/kg group. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term administration of oral CBD in healthy research beagles demonstrates a favorable safety profile regarding ocular tolerability. Oral CBD administration does not appear to affect tear production or IOP over a 36-week period. This is the first canine study positively identifying concentrations of CBD in tears following oral administration.

PURPOSE: To assess the repeatability of corneal pachymetry and epithelial thickness measurements with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and identify correlations between epithelial thickness and ocular surface parameters. METHODS: Adults who happened to have prolonged computer use were recruited, excluding those with conditions interfering with corneal measurements or tear production. All subjects filled in the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire. Three consecutive measurements of central and peripheral corneal and epithelial thickness were performed with SD-OCT (RTVue XR). Schirmer test I and tear film break-up time (TBUT) were performed. Repeatability was evaluated with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), coefficient of variation and repeatability limit. Spearman correlation was used for non-parametric variables. RESULTS: 113 eyes of 63 subjects were included in the study. ICC was ≥ 0.989 for all corneal and ≥ 0.944 for all epithelial pachymetry segments. The best repeatability was found centrally and the worst superiorly both for corneal and epithelial measurements. Central epithelial thickness was weakly correlated with Schirmer test I (rho = 0.21), TBUT (rho = 0.02), OSDI symptoms and OSDI score (rho <|0.32|). OSDI symptoms and OSDI score were weakly correlated with Schirmer test I (rho <|0.3|) and TBUT (rho <|0.34|). CONCLUSION: RTVue XR measurements of corneal and epithelial thickness are highly repeatable in all segments. The lack of correlation between epithelial thickness and ocular surface parameters could suggest the assessment of epithelial integrity with reliable methods such as SD-OCT.

PURPOSE: To measure tear osmolarity, Schirmer I test and tear break-up time (TBUT) values in the obstructed and non-obstructed fellow eye of unilateral primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (PANDO) patients and compare them with healthy controls. METHODS: In this prospective noninterventional study, the tear osmolarity, Schirmer I test, and TBUT values from unilateral PANDO eyes, fellow eyes, and control eyes of all subjects were measured. RESULTS: The study included 114 eyes of 30 PANDO patients as well as 27 healthy controls. There was a significant difference between TBUT and Schirmer values of fellow eyes and PANDO eyes (p = 0,035; p = 0,001). There was no significant difference in any of the ocular surface parameters between PANDO eyes and control eyes (p > 0.05). When fellow eyes were compared to control eyes, there was a significant difference in TBUT (p = 0.046). CONCLUSIONS: Decreased TBUT was exhibited by the fellow eye of unilateral PANDO patients, compared to the PANDO side and controls. Compensatory changes in PANDO eyes due to a decrease in the tear secretion reflex may lead to tear dysfunction of the fellow eye. Clinicians should assess tear stability in the fellow eye of PANDO patients as this could be leading to added symptomatic complaints.

BACKGROUND: One of the contributing factors to ocular surface health is a stable precorneal tear film. Considering the increasing interest in rabbits as pets and the limited literature available on domestic rabbit tearing, the aim of this study was to establish normative data for examination of the tear film in domestic rabbits. RESULTS: The study included 75 client-owned domestic Holland Lop rabbits (150 eyes). The following examinations were performed in each eye: Schirmer tear test-1, tear osmometry, interferometry, tear meniscus height measurement and meibography (quantifying meibomian gland loss as a percentage). The resulting median (95% central range) values were 10.0 (5.0-17.3) mm/min for the Schirmer tear test-1, 345.0 (280.5-376.1) mOsm/L for tear osmolarity, grade 2 (1-4) of interferometry, 0.28 (0.20-0.47) mm for tear meniscus height and 0.0 (0.0-67.6) % meibomian gland loss. A significant association was found between tear osmolarity and age, with an estimated decrease of - 4.0 mOsm/L with each additional year of age (p < 0.001). The distributions of interferometry grades were significantly different between males and females (p < 0.001), with grade 1 and grade 2 being the most frequent in females and males, respectively. A weak negative correlation was also observed between interferometry grade and the percentage of meibomian gland loss (r = - 0.22, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: This is an original study that documents extensive tear film parameters in healthy Holland Lop rabbits. The results can be used as normative data for the examination of the tear film in this lagomorph breed.

BACKGROUND: Tear proteomic analysis has become an important tool in medical and veterinary research. The tear collection method could influence the tear protein profile. This study aims to evaluate the protein profiles of dog tears collected using microcapillary tubes (MT), Schirmer tear strips (ST), and ophthalmic sponges (OS). METHODS: The tear samples were collected using MT, ST, and OS. Tear protein profiles were analyzed using two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) and the different protein spots' expression was compared. Fourteen protein spots were identified using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). RESULTS: Tear protein concentrations ranged from 2.80 to 4.03 µg/µL, with no statistically significant differences among collection methods. Protein expression in each collection method differed in terms of both the number and intensity of the spots. There were 249, 327, and 330 protein spots found from tears collected with MT, ST, and OS, respectively. The proteins albumin, haptoglobin, and lactoferrin identified from OS were found to have higher spot intensities than other methods of collection. The use of MT demonstrated the downregulation of nine proteins. CONCLUSIONS: The recent study supported that tear protein analysis is affected by different tear collection methods. Although ST is commonly used for tear collection, it provides insufficient information to study particular tear proteins.

BACKGROUND: To study the effects of aerobic exercise (AE) on tear secretion and tear film stability in dry eye patients. METHODS: This study consisted of two parts, each part included 3 groups, namely dry eye without AE group, dry eye with AE group and pre-clinical dry eye with AE group. In part 1, we studied the variations of Schirmer I test and six tear compositions before and after AE (34 eyes in each group). In part 2, we studied the variations of tear meniscus height, first and average non-invasive tear breakup time (F-NITBUT and A-NITBUT), lipid layer thickness, number of incomplete and complete blinks, partial blink rate (PBR) and visual acuity before and after AE (30 eyes in each group). RESULTS: In dry eye with AE group, Schirmer I test at 0 min after AE increased significantly compared to baseline (P < 0.001), the oxidative stress marker 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine after AE decreased significantly compared to baseline (P = 0.035, P = 0.045), F-NITBUT and A-NITBUT after AE prolonged significantly compared to baseline (P < 0.001, P = 0.007, P = 0.036; P < 0.001, P = 0.001, P = 0.044), number of incomplete blinks and PBR at 10 min after AE decreased significantly compared to baseline (P < 0.001; P < 0.001) while number of complete blinks increased significantly (P < 0.001). Besides, significant differences were also found between dry eye with AE group and dry eye without AE group at all above corresponding time point (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: AE promotes tear secretion and improves tear film stability in dry eye patients. AE may be a potential treatment for dry eye. BACKGROUND: To compare the Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score, Schirmer I test (SIT), fluorescein break up time (FBUT) and fluorescence staining (FLCS) score of dry eye patients at different ages. METHODS: 90 eyes of 90 patients with mild to moderate dry eye from September 2020 to September 2021 were retrospectively included and were divided into young group (20-39 years, n = 29), middle-age group (40-59 years, n = 30), and elder group (> 60 years, n = 31). Patients were given a 28-day topical lubricating ocular surface and repair-promoting drugs combined with local physical therapy. Patients were followed up at 7, 14 and 28 days. The OSDI score, SIT, FBUT and FLCS score were examined. RESULTS: There were differences between the OSDI score in three groups at each time point (all P < 0.001). SIT were different among the three groups (F = 350.61, P < 0.001), and a time effect was found (F = 80.87, P < 0.001). SIT at 14 and 28 days after treatment in middle-age and elder groups were lower than young group (all P < 0.001). SIT at 7, 14 and 28 days in elder group were lower than middle-age group (all P < 0.001). FLCS score was lower at 28 days than other time points (all P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Dry eye patients are given a 28-day topical lubricating ocular surface and repair-promoting drugs combined with local physical therapy, which can promote tear secretion, film stability, and the recovery of corneal integrity. Age affects the treatment effect of mild to moderate dry eye, among which tear secretion is the most significant.

OBJECTIVE: In the fall of 2020, Colorado experienced the two largest wildfires in state history. The smoke blanketed the college town of Fort Collins, Colorado, the location of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University (CSU-VTH). The objective for this cross-sectional observational study was to evaluate how these wildfires and the corresponding elevated air quality index (AQI)) was associated with infected corneal ulcerations in dogs when compared to the two previous years. ANIMALS: Seventeen dogs were included in this study. PROCEDURES: Medical records from dogs presented to the CSU-VTH ophthalmology service with infected corneal ulcerations in August, September, and October of 2020, 2019, and 2018 were evaluated. Only corneal ulcerations with growth on their microbial cultures were included in this study. RESULTS: The study revealed a significant increase in prevalence of infected corneal ulcerations in dogs presented to the CSU-VTH during the three wildfire months of 2020 that is, 3.5% (9/255) when compared with the two previous years, 2019: 1.0% (4/383, p = 0.04), and 2018: 0.9% (4/457) (p = .01). The AQI (mean ± standard error) was also significantly elevated for dogs that presented with infected corneal ulcerations in 2020 (70.2 ± 5.8) compared with 2019 (19.7 ± 8.7) and 2018 (45.6 ± 8.7) (p < .01). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Elevation of AQI from wildfires seems to be correlated with an increased prevalence of infected corneal ulceration in dogs. As the duration and frequency of wildfires continues to rise globally, the effects of these wildfires on animal health should be investigated further.

OBJECTIVE: To describe ophthalmic examination and diagnostic values for Schirmer tear test (STT), intraocular pressure (IOP), corneal horizontal diameter (CHD), palpebral fissure length (PFL), fundoscopy, and palpebral conjunctiva microbiota from healthy giant anteaters. ANIMALS STUDIED: Twelve giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), 11 adults and one juvenile, five males and seven females. PROCEDURES: The animals were submitted to general anesthesia and ophthalmic evaluation with portable slit-lamp biomicroscope, Finoff transilluminator, and fundoscopy, as well as STT, bacterial culture from palpebral conjunctiva, rebound tonometry IOP, and measurement of PFL and CHD. Data compiled were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey tests. RESULTS: The results (mean ± standard deviation) were as follows: STT 8.04 ± 6.21 mm/min; IOP 10.92 ± 2.45 mmHg; PFL 0.75 ± 0.11 cm; CHD 0.96 ± 0.10 cm. Out of the 24 eyes swab samples for bacterial culture, 17 were positive, with three genera of Gram-positive bacteria identified Staphylococcus spp., Bacillus sp., and Corynebacterium sp. Gram-negative bacteria were not isolated from any of the samples. CONCLUSIONS: As conservation work in this vulnerable species continues, this report on basic ophthalmic examination and diagnostic parameters will be helpful improve their treatment and care. More ophthalmic studies are encouraged in animals within the Pilosa order.
