CONTEXT: The quadriceps femoris is consistently ranked among the muscles most prone to sustain strain injuries in sports involving kicking and sprinting actions. Given the documented preventive effect of Nordic hamstring curl programs against hamstring strain injuries, incorporating exercises that induce eccentric overload on the quadriceps could potentially help mitigate strain injuries within this muscle group. The Reverse Nordic Curl (RNC) has emerged as a viable field-based exercise for eccentrically working the quadriceps. This study aimed to compare quadriceps muscle eccentric activation during the RNC with 3 bodyweight squat-based exercises: single-leg squat (SLS), Bulgarian squat, and forward lunge. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Twenty-three healthy volunteers (15 men) were monitored for rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis electromyographic signal, as well as knee range of motion, while performing 10 repetitions of each exercise. Electromyography data acquired during eccentric phases were normalized by maximum voluntary isometric contraction of the knee extensors. The exercises were compared based on the electromyography and knee range of motion values. RESULTS: RNC generated a similar rectus femoris and vastus medialis eccentric activation compared with the squat-based exercises (P > .05 for all), and a lower vastus lateralis activation than SLS (P < .001). Among the bodyweight squat-based exercises, SLS generated greater eccentric activation than forward lunge and Bulgarian squat for the 3 muscles (P < .05 for all). RNC was performed with lower knee-flexion range of motion than bodyweight squat-based exercises (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: RNC did not produce superior eccentric quadriceps activation compared to bodyweight squat-based exercises, even proving to be less demanding for the vastus lateralis compared to the SLS. These findings may assist practitioners in selecting exercises to elicit quadriceps eccentric stimulus, with a focus on preventing strain injuries.

Theropithecus brumpti is a primate known from numerous craniodental specimens in the Plio-Pleistocene Shungura Formation (Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia), but the anatomy of its hindlimb is documented only by a few associated and mostly incomplete postcranial specimens. The adaptations of T. brumpti are still debated, with its substrate preferences and its use of squatting postures recently discussed based on anatomical differences when compared with its extant representative, Theropithecus gelada. Here, we describe an associated femur and tibia (L 869-1 and L 869-2) of a presumed T. brumpti male and a partial foot (L 865-1r and L 865-1t) of a male T. brumpti, dated to ca. 2.6 Ma and ca. 2.32 Ma respectively. Based on univariate and bivariate morphometric analyses, we provide new data on the morphological correlates of substrate preferences and postural behaviors of this fossil species. Our results are in agreement with previous analyses and present T. brumpti as a predominantly terrestrial primate. We demonstrate the presence of osteological correlates associated with the use of squatting behaviors in T. brumpti but also point to significant anatomical differences between this paleontological species and T. gelada. These differences blur the functional value of characters previously identified as diagnostic of T. gelada and its postural behavior. We further document the postcranial distinctiveness of the Theropithecus clade in relation to the Papio clade. This study thus provides new insights into the postcranial anatomy and paleoecology of an abundant fossil primate from the Plio-Pleistocene of eastern Africa.

Background and Objective: Achilles tendon (AT) stiffness can reduce ankle dorsiflexion. However, whether AT stiffness affects the ankle dorsiflexion angle at a maximum squat depth remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the Young's modulus of the AT and ankle dorsiflexion angle at the maximum squat depth in healthy young males using shear-wave elastography (SWE). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 31 healthy young males. AT stiffness was measured using the Young's modulus through SWE. The ankle dorsiflexion angle at the maximum squat depth was measured as the angle between the vertical line to the floor and the line connecting the fibula head and the lateral malleolus using a goniometer. Results: Multiple regression analysis identified the Young's modulus of the AT at 10° of ankle dorsiflexion (standardized partial regression coefficient [ß] = -0.461; p = 0.007) and the ankle dorsiflexion angle in the flexed knee (ß = 0.340; p = 0.041) as independent variables for the ankle dorsiflexion angle at maximum squat depth. Conclusions: The Young's modulus of the AT may affect the ankle dorsiflexion angle at the maximum squat depth in healthy young males. Therefore, improving the Young's modulus of the AT may help increase the ankle dorsiflexion angle at maximum squat depth.

BACKGROUND: Many risk factors for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) have been proposed, and the cause is most likely multifactorial. This study aimed to investigate the effect of toileting behaviors on the natural course of anterior vaginal wall prolapse (AVWP). METHODS: Data on 75 women who underwent surgery for symptomatic AVWP were collected. Patients with grade ≥ II AVWP were included in this study and were divided into two groups according to their voiding and defecation position. The volunteers who voided and defecated in a sitting position comprised Group 1, and those who voided and defecated in a squatting position comprised Group 2. The Colorectal-Anal Impact Questionnaire (CRAIQ), Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire (PFIQ), Pelvic Organ Prolapse Impact Questionnaire (POPIQ), Urinary Impact Questionnaire (UIQ) and visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores were used to evaluate the patients' symptoms. RESULTS: Forty-four patients were included in Group 1 (sitting position), and 31 patients were included in Group 2 (squatting position). The groups were similar in terms of BMI, parity, menopause duration, topical estrogen use, comorbidities, the presence of constipation and urinary incontinence, and the pad count for incontinence. The time from initial symptoms to surgery was shorter in Group 2 than in Group 1 12 (3-73) and 24 (2-182) months (p = 0.001), respectively. The PFIQ, POPIQ and POP-related VAS scores were significantly higher in patients who voided and defecated in a squatting position. CONCLUSION: In patients with symptomatic POP, increased IAP while performing the squat position during defecation and voiding may increase the severity of patients' symptoms related to prolapse more than that of sitting position. Therefore, questioning the toileting position of patients with AVWP may help inform management decisions, with changing to a sitting position encouraged.

PURPOSE: The hypothesis of this study was that the kinematics of patients with higher patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) differ from those of patients with lower PROMs after bicruciate-stabilized total knee arthroplasty (BCS-TKA). METHODS: A total of 32 patients with severe knee osteoarthritis were examined 11.2 ± 3.2 months after BCS-TKA. The patients performed squats under single fluoroscopic surveillance in the sagittal plane. To estimate the spatial position and orientation of the femoral and tibial components, a 2D-to-3D registration technique was used. This technique uses a contour-based registration algorithm, single-view fluoroscopic images and 3D computer-aided design models. Knee range of motion, varus-valgus alignment, axial rotation of the femur relative to the tibial component, anteroposterior translation of the medial and lateral femorotibial contact points, kinematic paths, and anterior and posterior post-cam engagement were measured. The patients were divided into two groups using hierarchical cluster analysis based on the 1-year postoperative Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score and 2011 Knee Society Score. RESULTS: The femoral component had significantly more external rotation in the low-score group than in the high-score group (5.1 ± 1.8° vs. 2.2 ± 2.7°, p = 0.02). The high-score group had a medial pivot pattern from 0 to 20° of flexion, without significant movement from 20 to 70°, and final bicondylar rollback beyond 70°. The low-score group had a medial pivot from 0 to 70° of flexion and bicondylar rollback beyond 70°. There were no significant between-group differences in the varus-valgus angle or post-cam engagement. CONCLUSION: The higher PROM group had smaller external rotation of the femur after BCS-TKA. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III.

High knee flexion postures, despite their association with increased incidences of osteoarthritis, are frequently adopted in occupational childcare. This study sought to define and quantify high flexion postures typically adopted in childcare to evaluate any increased likelihood of knee osteoarthritis development. Through video analysis of eighteen childcare workers caring for infant, toddler, and preschool-aged children, eight high knee flexion postures were identified and quantified by duration and frequency. An analysis of postural adoption by task was subsequently performed to determine which might pose the greatest risk for cumulative joint trauma. Childcare workers caring for children of all ages were found to adopt kneeling and seated postures for extended durations and at elevated frequencies, exceeding proposed thresholds for incidences of knee osteoarthritis development. Structured activities, playing, and feeding tasks demanded the greatest adoption of high flexion postures and should be evaluated to minimise the potential childcare-related risks of osteoarthritis. Practitioner summary: High knee flexion postures (kneeling, squatting, etc.) have been associated with increased incidences of knee injury yet are commonly adopted in childcare. Childcare workers' postures were examined through video analysis revealing that proposed adoption thresholds for knee health are commonly exceeded when caring for children of all ages. BACKGROUND: Sitting involves many activities of daily life and requires most motion in the hip joint. Asians have more hip flexion and external rotation motions than Westerners owing to cultural and lifestyle differences. Being aware of the normal range of hip motion is essential in clinical practice. Limited research has focused on the hip motions of common sitting positions. The objective was to determine the hip motions of 10 common sitting positions, and to determine whether gender or being overweight affects the range of hip motions. METHODS: An experimental cross-sectional study was conducted to determine hip motions by using a standard, three-dimensional, motion-analysis system. Healthy subjects performed 10 sitting positions during 3 trials. All hip-kinematic data were measured on the dominant leg of each participant, except for the right- and left-monk positions (both hips were analyzed). Density plots were constructed and statistical analyses were performed to detect the differences between groups (male and female; non-overweight and overweight). RESULTS: The 48 participants comprised 24 males and 24 females. Most were right-leg dominant (45 participants, 93.8%). Of the 22 participants in the overweight group (body mass index ≥23 kg/m2), 18 (75%) were male. Squatting showed the highest flexion angle (99.7°, 47.3°-122°). Cross-legged sitting had the highest abduction angle (28.9°, 9.9°-45.7°) and the largest external rotation angle (62°, 37.6°-81.7°). In the female group, there were trends toward a greater flexion angle (4 out of 10 sitting positions) and a smaller abduction angle (6 out of 9 positions), with P values < 0.05. As to body weight, the overweight participants had a smaller flexion angle but a greater abduction angle, with 5 out of 9 positions having a P value < 0.05. Kinematic data of the transverse plane revealed that the heterogeneity of the rotational angles depended on the sitting position. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided the functional hip motions of common Asian sitting positions. The kinematic data can be utilized in clinical practice as reference values to determine safe positions. Gender and being overweight affected the hip angles in the sagittal and frontal planes. Ligament balancing during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) often relies on subjective surgeon experience. Although instrumented tibial trays facilitate an objective assessment of intraoperative joint balance through quantification of intra-articular joint loads, postoperative clinical assessment of joint balance relies on passive stress tests quantifying varus-valgus joint laxity. This study aimed at correlating the intraoperative and postoperative metrics used to assess joint balance while also comparing joint loads obtained during passive assessment and active functional motions. Four experienced surgical fellows were assigned a fresh-frozen lower limb each to plan and perform posterior-stabilised TKA. An instrumented tibial insert measured intraoperative intra-articular loads. Specimens were then subjected to passive flexion-extension, open-chain extension, active squatting, and varus-valgus laxity tests on a validated knee simulator. Intra-articular loads were recorded using the instrumented insert and tibiofemoral kinematics using an optical motion capture system. A negative correlation was observed between mean intraoperative intra-articular loads and corresponding mean postoperative tibial abduction angle during laxity tests (medial: R = -0.93, p = 0.02; lateral: R = -0.88, p = 0.04); however, this was not observed for each specimen. Peak intra-articular load distribution for active squatting was lateral-heavy, contrasting to the medial-heavy distribution observed in passive intraoperative measurements, for all specimens. These aspects should be given due consideration while assessing intraoperative and postoperative joint stability following TKA.

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to threaten global stability. Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is mostly by respiratory droplets and direct contact but viral RNA fragments have also been detected in the faecal waste of patients with COVID-19. Cleanliness and effective sanitation of public toilets is a concern, as flushing the toilet is potentially an aerosol generating procedure. When the toilets are of the squatting type and without a cover, there exists a risk of viral contamination through the splashing of toilet water and aerosol generation. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine whether the cleanliness of public toilets was a concern to the general population during the COVID-19 pandemic, and whether a squatting toilet was preferred to a seated design. METHODS: A questionnaire was designed and posted on "WeChat" contact groups of the investigators. RESULTS: The survey showed that 91% of participants preferred squatting toilets, but that 72% were apprehensive of personal contamination when using public toilets. Over 63% of the respondents had encountered an incidence of water splash and would prefer public toilets to be covered during flushing and 83% of these respondents preferred a foot-controlled device. CONCLUSION: This survey suggests that consideration should be given to the installation of a simple foot-controlled device to cover public squatting toilets to help restrict potential COVID-19 contamination and to meet hygienic expectations of the public.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) gradually reduces knee function and limits activities of daily living with age. However, the progression of abnormal kinematics of the knee in knee OA is unclear. AIMS: This study aimed to clarify the relationship between stage of knee OA and abnormal knee kinematics and to identify a strategy for prevention of knee OA. METHODS: A total of 112 knees of 99 patients (45 men/54 women; 55.9 ± 18.2 years), comprising 28 (27/1) in Kellgren-Lawrence grade 0, 18 (8/10) in grade 1, 27 (2/25) in grade 2, 28 (6/22) in grade 3, and 11 (3/8) in grade 4, were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. In vivo knee kinematics was obtained using a three-dimensional-to-two-dimensional registration technique utilizing CT-based bone models and lateral fluoroscopy during knee extension-flexion in an upright sitting position and squatting. RESULTS: The external rotation angle of the tibia relative to the femur was greater in grade 3/4 knees than in grade 0/1 knees and tibial posterior translation was greater in grade 3/4 knees than in grade 0-2 knees. DISCUSSION: Age-related changes in muscle activity and joint instability are considered to be the cause of these abnormal kinematics. CONCLUSIONS: As the stage of knee OA progresses, there was a tendency toward increasing tibial external rotation and tibial posterior translation during knee extension-flexion in sitting position and squatting. Prevention of the progress of the abnormal knee kinematics may prevent the progression of the knee OA.

BACKGROUND: Few studies compared the length change of ligaments of normal knees during dynamic activities of daily living. The aim of this study was to investigate in vivo length change of ligaments of the normal knees during high flexion. METHODS: Eight normal knees were investigated. Each volunteer performed squatting, kneeling, and cross-leg motions. Each sequential motion was performed under fluoroscopic surveillance in the sagittal plane. The femoral, tibial, and fibular attachment areas of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), deep medial collateral ligament (dMCL), superficial medial collateral ligament (sMCL), and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) were determined according to osseous landmarks. After 2D/3D registration, the direct distance from the femoral attachment to the tibial or fibular attachment was measured as the ligament length. RESULTS: From 20° to 90° with flexion, the ACL was significantly shorter during cross-leg motion than during squatting. For the PCL, dMCL, sMCL, and LCL, there were no significant differences among the 3 motions. CONCLUSION: The ACL was shorter during cross-leg motion than during squatting in mid-flexion. This suggests that the ACL is looser during cross-leg motion than during squatting. On the other hand, the length change of the PCL, MCL, and LCL did not change even though the high flexion motions were different.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to clarify the natural knee kinematics provided by bicruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty (BCR-TKA) compared with those of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) and normal knees. METHODS: Volunteers and patients who had undergone UKA and BCR-TKA with anatomical articular surface performed squatting motion under fluoroscopy. To estimate the knee's spatial position and orientation, a two-dimensional/three-dimensional registration technique was used. The rotation angle and anteroposterior translation of the medial and lateral sides of the femur relative to the tibia in each flexion angle were directly evaluated using the same local coordinate system and their differences amongst the three groups were analysed using two-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc pairwise comparison. RESULTS: From 0° to 10° of flexion, the femoral external rotation angle of BCR-TKA knees was significantly greater than that of normal and UKA knees and the medial side of BCR-TKA knees was significantly more anteriorly located than that of normal and UKA knees. From 40° to 50° of flexion, the medial side of UKA knees was significantly more posteriorly located than that of normal and BCR-TKA knees. From 30° to 120° of flexion, the lateral side of BCR-TKA knees was significantly more anteriorly located than that of normal and UKA knees. CONCLUSION: The in vivo kinematics of BCR-TKA knees reproduces those of normal knees to a lower extent than those of UKA knees. Thus, BCR-TKA with anatomical articular surface reproduces in vivo kinematics of normal knees to a lower extent than UKA. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

A musculoskeletal model of the right lower limb was developed to estimate 3D tibial contact forces in high knee flexion postures. This model determined the effect of intersegmental contact between thigh-calf and heel-gluteal structures on tibial contact forces. This model includes direct tracking and 3D orientation of intersegmental contact force, femoral translations from in vivo studies, wrapping of knee extensor musculature, and a novel optimization constraint for multielement muscle groups. Model verification consisted of calculating the error between estimated tibial compressive forces and direct measurements from the Grand Knee Challenge during movements to ∼120° of knee flexion as no high knee flexion data are available. Tibial compression estimates strongly fit implant data during walking (R2 = .83) and squatting (R2 = .93) with a root mean squared difference of .47 and .16 body weight, respectively. Incorporating intersegmental contact significantly reduced model estimates of peak tibial anterior-posterior shear and increased peak medial-lateral shear during the static phase of high knee flexion movements by an average of .33 and .07 body weight, respectively. This model supports prior work in that intersegmental contact is a critical parameter when estimating tibial contact forces in high knee flexion movements across a range of culturally and occupationally relevant postures.

BACKGROUND: The squatting birth position is widely used for "natural" birth or in countries where childbirth occurs in non-medical facilities. Squatting birth positions, like others, are roughly defined so a biomechanical assessment is required with the availability of noninvasive technology in pregnant women. In practice, we can observe spontaneously two kinds of squatting birth position: on tiptoes and with feet flat. OBJECTIVE: To compare the impact of foot posture on biomechanical parameters considered essential in obstetrical biomechanics during a squatting birth position: on tiptoes versus with feet flat on the floor. STUDY DESIGN: Thirteen pregnant women beyond 32 weeks of gestational age who were not in labor were assessed during squatting birth position firstly spontaneously and secondly with the foot posture that was not taken spontaneously (on the tiptoes vs with feet flat). For each position, ANGle of flexion on the spine of the plane of the pelvis external conjugate (ANGec), hip flexion and abduction, and lumbar curve were assessed using an optoelectronic motion capture system and a biomechanical model adapted from the conventional gait model as well as a measuring system of the lumbar curve. RESULTS: Spontaneously, 11 out of 13 women squatted on tiptoe at the first test. On tiptoes the hip flexion was lower than with feet flat (p < 0.02), whereas hip abduction was not significantly different (p = 0.28). A lower ANGec angle (p = 0.003) was noticed for the tiptoe position than feet flat. The lumbar curve (lordosis) was more marked for the squatting position on tiptoes than for the position with feet flat (p < 0.001). On tiptoes no woman had a pelvic inlet plane perpendicular to the spine and none had a flat back or kyphosis. No woman on tiptoes fulfilled the two conditions necessary for the position that we consider optimal. CONCLUSION: In squatting birth position, foot posture has a biomechanical impact on lumbar curve and pelvic orientation. When comparing squatting positions (on tiptoes vs feet flat), feet flat on the ground is closer to optimal birth conditions than on tiptoes.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis is a common and often disabling disorder, which has been related to knee-straining work. However, exposure response relations are uncertain and there are few prospective studies. We studied prospectively if incident knee osteoarthritis is associated with cumulative exposure as an airport baggage handler, lifting on average 5000 kg/d. METHODS: The study is based on the Copenhagen Airport Cohort, a historical cohort of male baggage handlers and a reference group of unskilled men from the greater Copenhagen area, followed from 1990 to 2012. Cumulative years of employment as a baggage handler was based on information from company employment and union registers. Outcome was first hospital admission with a discharge diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis and/or knee replacement, ascertained from the Danish National Patient Register. RESULTS: The cohort contained 3442 baggage handlers and 65 511 workers in the reference group. The unadjusted incidence rate ratio (IRR) of knee osteoarthritis increased steeply with cumulative years as a baggage handler. Although the exposure-response pattern became weaker and statistically nonsignificant (P ≈ .10) when adjusting for age, the risk of knee osteoarthritis was still increased in baggage handlers at the highest exposure level. Additional analyses showed that the association between age and osteoarthritis was stronger for baggage handlers (IRR = 2.09; 95% CI: 1.68-2.60) than for referents (IRR = 1.58; 95% CI: 1.53-1.63), indicating that knee osteoarthritis occurred at a younger age among baggage handlers than in the reference group. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this prospective cohort study support that long-term heavy lifting increases the risk of knee osteoarthritis.

CONTEXT: Whole-body vibration (WBV) has shown many positive effects on the human body in rehabilitation and clinical settings in which vibration has been used to elicit muscle contractions in spastic and paretic muscles. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether WBV exercise (WBVe) differently modulates the cortical activity associated with motor and prefrontal function based on its frequency. METHODS: A total of 18 healthy male adults (mean age: 25.3 [2.4] y) participated in this study and performed WBVe (Galileo Advanced plus; Novotec Medical, Pforzheim, Germany) under 3 different vibration frequency conditions (4-mm amplitude with 10-, 20-, and 27-Hz frequencies) and a control condition (0-mm amplitude with 0-Hz frequency). Each condition consisted of 2 alternating tasks (squatting and standing) every 30 seconds for 5 repetitions. All subjects performed the 4 conditions in a randomized order. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Cortical activation during WBVe was measured by relative changes in oxygenated hemoglobin concentration over the primary motor cortex, premotor cortex, supplementary motor area, and prefrontal and somatosensory cortices using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. RESULTS: Oxygenated hemoglobin concentration was higher during the 27-Hz vibration condition than the control and 10-Hz vibration conditions. Specifically, these changes were pronounced in the bilateral primary motor cortex (P < .05) and right prefrontal cortex (P < .05). In contrast, no significant changes in oxygenated hemoglobin concentration were observed in any of the cortical areas during the 10-Hz vibration condition compared with the control condition. CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence that the motor network and prefrontal cortical areas of healthy adult males can be activated by 27-Hz WBVe. However, WBVe at lower frequencies did not induce significant changes in cortical activation.

Drop foot is defined as difficulty of dorsiflexion of the foot and ankle due to weak anterior tibial, extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum longus muscles. Cauda equina syndrome, local peroneal nerve damage due to trauma, nerve entrapment, compartment syndrome and tumors are common etiologies. A 32-year-old male patient was applied with difficulty in dorsiflexion of both of his toes, feet and ankles after he had squatted in toilette for 6-7 hours (because of his haemorrhoid) after intense alcohol intake 2 weeks before. Acute, partial, demyelinating lesion in head of fibula segment of peroneal nerves was diagnosed by electromyography. This case was reported since prolonged squatting is an extremely rare cause of acute bilateral peroneal neuropathy. This type of neuropathy is mostly demyelination and has good prognosis with physical therapy and mechanical devices, but surgical intervention may be required due to axonal damage. People such as workers and farmers working in the squatting position for long hours should be advised to change their position as soon as the compression symptoms (numbness, tingling) appear.

Compression neuropathy of the common peroneal nerve (CPN) at the fibula head is a common condition, but it has not attracted attention in working environments. Here, we report a 38-year-old sewer pipe worker who presented with bilateral CPN palsy following 6h working with a squatting posture in a narrow sewer pipe. During the work, he could not stretch his legs sufficiently because of the confined space. His symptoms deteriorated with repetition of the same work for 1 week. Motor nerve conduction study showed conduction block at the fibula head of bilateral CPNs, compatible with compression neuropathy at this lesion. Three months after cessation of work requiring the causative posture, his symptoms and neurophysiological abnormalities had resolved completely. Almost all seven of his co-workers presented transiently with similar and milder symptoms, although one showed CPN palsy for 6 months. Prolonged squatting posture in a confined space causes acute compression neuropathy at the fibula head in the CPN. More attention should be paid to 'confined space worker's compression neuropathy'.

[Purpose] The purposes of this study were first to analyze the multijoint dynamics of downward squatting, and to examine the contribution of interaction torque and muscle torque to net torque, and second, to examine mechanisms of movement control. [Subjects] The subjects were 31 healthy men with a mean age of 21.0 ± 1.2 years (range, 19-24 years). [Methods] Squatting tasks with the trunk in two positions, an erect and anterior tilt position, were performed by the subjects. Net, interaction, muscle, and gravity torque were calculated according to the Lagrange equation using 3D tracking data. [Results] The contribution ratio of interaction torque to net torque was approximately 90%, irrespective of the joint and task. In contrast, muscle torque showed complicated behavior to compensate for gravity torque. A combined muscle and gravity torque profile showed flexion or dorsiflexion immediately after the initiation of the movement, and it later changed to extension or plantar flexion. [Conclusion] The torque that contributes almost exclusively to the net torque was interaction torque. The combination of muscle and gravity torque at the knee joint and the hip joint is important for movement control, independent of the starting position.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of whole-body vibration exercise (WBVE) on isokinetic muscular function of the knee and jump performance depending on different squatting positions. [Subjects] The subjects were 12 healthy adult men who did not exercise regularly between the ages of 27 and 34. [Methods] WBVE was performed with high squat position (SP), middle SP, and low SP. Before and after the intervention, isokinetic muscular function of the knees and jump performance were measured. [Results] Knee flexion peak torque at 60°/s and total work at 180°/s were significantly increased after implementing WBVE. Jump height also significantly increased after completing the exercise at all positions in comparison with the pre-exercise programs. [Conclusion] The results of this study suggest that SP during WBVE is an important factor stimulating positive effects on muscular function.
