Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a kind of recurrent inflammatory disorder of the intestinal tract. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Weissella paramesenteroides NRIC1542 on colitis in mice. A colitis model was induced by adding 1.5% DSS to sterile distilled water for seven consecutive days. During this process, mice were administered different concentrations of W. paramesenteroides NRIC1542. Colitis was assessed by DAI, colon length and hematoxylin-eosin staining of colon sections. The expressions of NF-κB signaling proteins and the tight junction proteins ZO-1 and occludin were detected by western blotting, and the gut microbiota was analyzed by 16S rDNA. The results showed that W. paramesenteroides NRIC1542 significantly reduced the degree of pathological tissue damage and the levels of TNF-α and IL-1ß in colonic tissue, inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway and increasing the expression of SIRT1, ZO-1 and occludin. In addition, W. paramesenteroides NRIC1542 can modulate the structure of the gut microbiota, characterized by increased relative abundance of Muribaculaceae_unclassified, Paraprevotella, Prevotellaceae_UCG_001 and Roseburia, and decrease the relative abundance of Akkermansia and Alloprevotella induced by DSS. The above results suggested that W. paramesenteroides NRIC1542 can protect against DSS-induced colitis in mice through anti-inflammatory, intestinal barrier maintenance and flora modulation.

BACKGROUND: Various animal taxa have specialized to living with social hosts. Depending on their level of specialization, these symbiotic animals are characterized by distinct behavioural, chemical, and morphological traits that enable close heterospecific interactions. Despite its functional importance, our understanding of the feeding ecology of animals living with social hosts remains limited. We examined how host specialization of silverfish co-habiting with ants affects several components of their feeding ecology. We combined stable isotope profiling, feeding assays, phylogenetic reconstruction, and microbial community characterization of the Neoasterolepisma silverfish genus and a wider nicoletiid and lepismatid silverfish panel where divergent myrmecophilous lifestyles are observed. RESULTS: Stable isotope profiling (δ13C and δ15N) showed that the isotopic niches of granivorous Messor ants and Messor-specialized Neoasterolepisma exhibit a remarkable overlap within an ant nest. Trophic experiments and gut dissections further supported that these specialized Neoasterolepisma silverfish transitioned to a diet that includes plant seeds. In contrast, the isotopic niches of generalist Neoasterolepisma silverfish and generalist nicoletiid silverfish were clearly different from their ant hosts within the shared nest environment. The impact of the myrmecophilous lifestyle on feeding ecology was also evident in the internal silverfish microbiome. Compared to generalists, Messor-specialists exhibited a higher bacterial density and a higher proportion of heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria. Moreover, the nest environment explained the infection profile (or the 16S rRNA genotypes) of Weissella bacteria in Messor-specialized silverfish and the ant hosts. CONCLUSIONS: Together, we show that social hosts are important determinants for the feeding ecology of symbiotic animals and can induce diet convergence.

Macrobrachium rosenbergii is a highly valuable prawn species in aquaculture due to its current growing demand in the market. However, various bacterial diseases caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus have been observed to induce mortality in larval, juvenile, and adult stages of M. rosenbergii. While antibiotics are commonly used to manage these diseases, they contribute to antimicrobial resistance, a global concern with serious environmental and health implications. Consequently, the scientific community is exploring host-derived beneficial microorganisms as functional feed additives, offering eco-friendly alternatives that boost shrimp and prawn immunity. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of host-derived beneficial microorganisms from the gut of M. rosenbergii, on the inhibition, immunomodulation, survival, and growth of M. rosenbergii when exposed to V. parahaemolyticus. The result of this study showed that Weissella confusa C6, a lactic acid bacterium isolated from the gut of M. rosenbergii, significantly inhibits the growth of V. parahaemolyticus R1 as demonstrated in agar well diffusion assay and co-culture assay. Additionally, it showed immunomodulatory effects, indicated by elevated total hemocyte count (THC) and phenoloxidase (PO) activity during the bacterial challenge test. Furthermore, supplementing the diet with W. confusa led to significant improvements in M. rosenbergii, including increased survival rates, weight gain, specific growth rate, better feed conversion ratio, and reduced density of V. parahaemolyticus in the prawn's gut. Therefore, it can be considered a viable option for use as a feed supplement in prawn farming, enhancing M. rosenbergii's immune system, disease resistance, and overall health.

We reported a rare case of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by Weissella confusa. In this case, the symptoms of peritonitis were insidious and atypical, with only turbid peritoneal dialysis effluent and no fever or abdominal pain. The peritoneal dialysis effluent showed slightly elevated leukocytes (predominantly lymphocytes). Weissella confusa was confirmed through repeated peritoneal dialysis effluent cultures. Gastroscopy revealed erosive gastritis with a hookworm infection. The patient recovered after antibiotic and deworming treatments. Our report highlights the unusual and atypical symptoms, characterized by insidious onset, turbid peritoneal dialysis fluid, and an absence of typical signs such as fever or abdominal pain.

In this study, bacterial ghosts (BGs) were generated from Weissella koreensis LKS42 (WKorGs) and Pediococcus pentosacues KA94 (PPGs) by chemically inducing lysis using substances such as hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), nitric acid (HNO3), acetic acid (CH3COOH), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), n-butanol, and C6H8O7. HCl-induced WKorGs and PPGs exhibited complete removal of DNA and displayed transverse membrane dissolution tunnel structures under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cell viability assays showed high viability of RAW 264.7 cells exposed to HCl-induced WKorGs and PPGs. Additionally, treatment with HCl-induced WKorGs and PPGs elevated mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, iNOS) and the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in RAW 264.7 cells. These findings suggest that HCl-induced WKorGs and PPGs have the potential to be used as inactivated bacterial immunostimulants, highlighting their promising applications in immunization and immunotherapy.

The genus Periweissella was proposed as a novel genus in the Lactobacillaceae in 2022. However, the phylogenetic relationship between Periweissella and other heterofermentative lactobacilli, and the genetic and physiological properties of this genus remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the phylogenetic relationship between Periweissella and the two closest genera, Weissella and Furfurilactobacillus, by the phylogenetic analysis and calculation of (core gene) pairwise average amino acid identity. Targeted genomic analysis showed that fructose bisphosphate aldolase was only present in the genome of Pw. cryptocerci. Mannitol dehydrogenase was found in genomes of Pw. beninensis, Pw. fabaria, and Pw. fabalis. Untargeted genomic analysis identified the presence of flagellar genes in Periweissella but not in other closely related genera. Phenotypes related to carbohydrate fermentation and motility matched the genotypes. Motility genes were organized in a single operon and the proteins shared a high amino acid similarity in the genus Periweissella. The relatively low similarity of motility operons between Periweissella and other motile lactobacilli indicated the acquisition of motility by the ancestral species. Our findings facilitate the phylogenetic, genetic, and phenotypic understanding of the genus Periweissella.ImportanceThe genus Periweissella is a heterofermentative genus in the Lactobacillaceae which includes predominantly isolates from cocoa fermentations in tropical climates. Despite the relevance of the genus in food fermentations, genetic and physiological properties of the genus are poorly characterized and genome sequences became available only after 2020. This study characterized strains of the genus by functional genomic analysis, and by determination of metabolic and physiological traits. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Periweissella is the evolutionary link between rod-shaped heterofermentative lactobacilli and the coccoid Leuconostoc clade with the genera Weissella and Furfurilactobacillus as closest relatives. Periweissella is the only heterofermentative genus in the Lactobacillaceae which comprises predominantly motile strains. The genomic, physiological, and metabolic characterization of Periweissella may facilitate the potential use of strains of the genus as starter culture in traditional or novel food fermentations.

Streptococcus mutans is a significant contributor to dental caries and causes functional and aesthetic discomfort. Weissella cibaria strains were isolated from kimchi, and their functional properties were determined. In this study, the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of four W. cibaria strains (D29, D30, D31, and B22) were evaluated against three S. mutans strains using culture fluid and cell-free supernatants. The results showed that W. cibaria reduced the exopolysaccharides production and auto-aggregation, increased co-aggregation, and downregulated virulence factors, leading to the inhibition of bacterial growth and biofilm formation. These findings were confirmed using scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. These results indicate that oral health can be potentially improved by W. cibaria.

In this study, three lactic acid bacteria, namely, HBUAS51963T, HBUAS51964 and HBUAS51965, were isolated from Chinese rice wine starter sampled in Fangxian County, PR China. All were non-motile, non-spore-forming and Gram-positive spherical cells. Their taxonomic status was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Genome-based analysis revealed that all three strains were phylogenomically related to Weissella thailandensis KCTC 3751T and Weissella paramesenteroides ATCC 33313T. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between the three strains and the phylogenetically related type strains were less than 54.8 and 93.8â%, respectively, and thus, they were below the thresholds of dDDH and ANI for species definition. The genomic DNA G+C content was 38.6 molâ%. The predominant fatty acid methyl esters (>10â%) were C16â:â0, C19â:â0 cyc11 and summed feature 10 (C18â:â1 cyc11 and/or ECL 17.834). The polar lipids in the cells of strain HBUAS51963T were mainly phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, unidentified glycolipids, phospholipids and lipids. Finally, the three strains were capable of producing d-lactic acid (4.29 g l-1) and various organic acids such as tartaric, acetic, lactic and succinic acids. Overall, the results of genotypic, phenotypic and genomic analyses suggest that the three strains represent a new species of the genus Weissella, for which the name Weissella fangxianis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HBUAS51963T (=GDMCC 1.3506T= JCM 35803T).

The animal gut microbiota consist of many different microorganisms, mainly bacteria, but archaea, fungi, protozoans, and viruses may also be present. This complex and dynamic community of microorganisms may change during parasitic infection. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the presence of microsporidians on the composition of the mosquito gut microbiota and linked some microbiome taxa and functionalities to infections caused by these parasites. We characterised bacterial communities of 188 mosquito females, of which 108 were positive for microsporidian DNA. To assess how bacterial communities change during microsporidian infection, microbiome structures were identified using 16S rRNA microbial profiling. In total, we identified 46 families and four higher taxa, of which Comamonadaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Flavobacteriaceae and Pseudomonadaceae were the most abundant mosquito-associated bacterial families. Our data suggest that the mosquito gut microbial composition varies among host species. In addition, we found a correlation between the microbiome composition and the presence of microsporidians. The prediction of metagenome functional content from the 16S rRNA gene sequencing suggests that microsporidian infection is characterised by some bacterial species capable of specific metabolic functions, especially the biosynthesis of ansamycins and vancomycin antibiotics and the pentose phosphate pathway. Moreover, we detected a positive correlation between the presence of microsporidian DNA and bacteria belonging to Spiroplasmataceae and Leuconostocaceae, each represented by a single species, Spiroplasma sp. PL03 and Weissella cf. viridescens, respectively. Additionally, W. cf. viridescens was observed only in microsporidian-infected mosquitoes. More extensive research, including intensive and varied host sampling, as well as determination of metabolic activities based on quantitative methods, should be carried out to confirm our results.

The genus Weissella belongs to the lactic acid bacteria group. It occurs naturally in foods and is a component of the human microbiome. A few Weissella species are candidate probiotics due to their potential for survival under the harsh conditions present in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. Various species have also shown potential for treating and preventing periodontal disease, skin pathologies, and atopic dermatitis; some are used as starters for the fermentation of foods due to their production of exopolysaccharides; and others are used as protective cultures due to their production of weissellicin, a bacteriocin. However, a few Weissella species are opportunistic pathogens, such as W. ceti, which is the etiological agent of weissellosis, a disease in rainbow trout. Additionally, most Weissella species are intrinsically vancomycin-resistant. Thus, the Weissella genus is important from both medical and industrial points of view, and the Janus faces of this genus should be considered in any expected biotechnological applications. In this review, we present an overview of the probiotic potential and pathogenic cases of the Weissella genus reported in the literature.

To investigate the characteristics of different LAB strains isolated from subtropics and their effects on Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) silage with two dry matter (DM) levels, sugar fermentation pattern, and growth profiles of three screened lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains [Pediococcus pentosaceus (PP04), Weissella cibaria (WC10), and Lactobacillus plantarum (LP694)] were characterized, and then used either individually or in combination at 1.0 × 106 cfu g-1 fresh weight to inoculate grass having 15% or 25% DM. Treatments were applied: (1) no inoculant (control); (2) PP04; (3) WC10; (4) LP694; (5) M-1 (PP04: WC10 = 2:1); (6) M-2 (PP04: LP694 = 1:2); (7) M-3 (WC10: LP694 = 2:1); (8) M-4 (PP04: WC10: LP694 = 2:1:1). The results showed that all inoculations increased LAB, DM recovery, and lactic acid (LA) concentration, while decreasing pH, the ammonia nitrogen/total nitrogen (NH3-N/TN), and butyric acid (BA) concentration compared to control group in both DM. However, the effect of inoculations was very limited at 15% DM. Silages with inoculants achieved higher silage quality at 25% DM than 15% DM. The different LAB inoculants result in significant differences in silage quality, while W. cibaria decreased the pH and inhibited the growth of undesirable bacteria and those characteristics were not affected by the DM content.

Weissella confusa and Weissella cibaria strains isolated from the human- gut are considered as potential probiotics, but remain under-explored owing to their ambiguous taxonomic assignment. The present study assesses the taxonomic resolution of 11 strains belonging to W. confusa and W. cibaria species and highlights the inter- and intraspecies variations using an array of phenetic and molecular methods. Remarkable genomic variability among the strains was observed by phylogenetic analysis using concatenated housekeeping genes (pheS, gyrB, and dnaA) along with 16S rRNA gene sequence, suggesting intraspecies variations; which is also supported by the phenetic data. Analysis showed that 16S rRNA gene sequence alone could not resolve the variation, and among the tested marker genes, signals from pheS gene provide better taxonomic resolution. The biochemical and antibiotic susceptibility tests also showed considerable variations among the isolates. Additionally, 'quick' identification using mass spectroscopy-based matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectra was accurate up to genus only, and not species level, for the Weissella group. The study highlights need for inclusion of functional, phenetic, and multigene phylogenetic analysis in addition to 16S rRNA gene-based identification for the Weissella group, to provide better resolution in taxonomic assignments, which is often a prerequisite for the selection of potential strains with biotechnological applications.

Although Weissella cibaria and W. confusa are essential food-fermenting bacteria, they are also opportunistic pathogens. Despite these species being commercially crucial, their taxonomy is still based on inaccurate identification methods. In this study, we present a novel approach for identifying two important Weissella species, W. cibaria and W. confusa, by combining matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization and time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF MS) data using machine-learning techniques. After on- and off-plate protein extraction, we observed that the BioTyper database misidentified or could not differentiate Weissella species. Although Weissella species exhibited very similar protein profiles, these species can be differentiated on the basis of the results of a statistical analysis. To classify W. cibaria, W. confusa, and non-target Weissella species, machine learning was used for 167 spectra, which led to the listing of potential species-specific mass-to-charge (m/z) loci. Machine-learning techniques including artificial neural networks, principal component analysis combined with the K-nearest neighbor, support vector machine (SVM), and random forest were used. The model that applied the Radial Basis Function kernel algorithm in SVM achieved classification accuracy of 1.0 for training and test sets. The combination of MALDI-TOF MS and machine learning can efficiently classify closely-related species, enabling accurate microbial identification.

Prochiral ketones can be effectively bio-reduced to chiral secondary alcohols by whole-cell biocatalysts, which are possible useful precursors to synthesize physiologically active chemicals and natural products. When whole-cell biocatalysts strains are used, bioreduction process can be influenced by various cultural factors, and it is vital to optimize these factors that affect selectivity, conversion rate, and yield. In this study, Weissella cibaria N9 was used as whole-cell biocatalyst for bioreduction of 1-(thiophen-2-yl)ethanone, and cultural design factors were optimized using a desirability function-embedded face-centered optimization model. For this, effects of pH (4.5-5.5-6.5, x1), (2) temperature (25-30-35 °C, x2), (3) incubation period (24-48-72 h, x3), and (4) agitation speed (100-150-200 rpm, x4) on two response variables; (1) ee (%) and (2) cr (%) were tested. Next, desirability function-embedded face-centered optimization model revealed that a pH of 6.43, a temperature of 26.04 °C, an incubation period of 52.41 h, and an agitation speed of 150 rpm were the optimum levels and the estimated ee and cr responses were 99.31% and 98.16%, respectively. Importantly, the actual experimental ee and cr responses were similar to the estimated values indicating the capability of the offered desirability function-embedded face-centered optimization model when using the optimum cultural conditions.

With the aim to discover novel lactic acid bacteria and Bacillus strains from fish as potential probiotics to replace antibiotics in aquaculture, the present study was conducted to isolate lactic acid bacteria and Bacillus from intestinal tract of healthy crucian carp (Carassiu auratus) and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and evaluate their resistance against Aeromonas veronii. Based on the evaluation of antibacterial activity and tolerance test, one strain of lactic acid bacteria (Weissella cibaria C-10) and one strain of Bacillus (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens T-5) with strong environmental stability were screened out. The safety evaluation showed that these two strains were non-toxic to crucian carp and were sensitive to most antibiotics. In vivo study, the crucian carps were fed a basal diet supplemented with W. cibaria C-10 (C-10), B. amyloliquefaciens T-5 (T-5) and W. cibaria C-10 + B. amyloliquefaciens T-5 (C-10+T-5), respectively, for 5 weeks. Then, various immune parameters were measured at 35 days of post-feeding. Results showed both probiotics could improve the activities of related immune enzymes, immune factors and non-specific immune antibodies in blood and organs (gill, gut, kidney, liver, and spleen) of crucian carp in varying degrees. Moreover, after 7 days of challenge experiment, the survival rates after challenged with A. veronii of W. cibaria C-10 (C-10), B. amyloliquefaciens T-5 (T-5) and W. cibaria C-10 + B. amyloliquefaciens T-5 (C-10+T-5) supplemented groups to the crucian carps were 20%, 33% and 22%, respectively. Overall, W. cibaria C-10 and B. amyloliquefaciens T-5 could be considered to be developed into microecological preparations for the alternatives of antibiotics in aquaculture.

Mastitis is one of the most important causes of loss of cattle production, burdening producers due to the increased cost of milk production and decreased herd productivity. The development of alternative methods for the treatment and prevention of mastitis other than traditional chemical antibiotic therapy needs to be implemented to meet international pressures to reduce the use of these drugs and promote the elimination of multiresistant microbial strains from the environment. Treatment with probiotic bacteria or yeast strains offers a possible strategy for the control of mastitis. The objective of this work was to isolate, identify, and characterize lactic bacteria from milk and the intramammary duct of Gyr, Guzerat, Girolando 1/2, and Holstein cattle breeds from Brazil. Samples of 115 cows were taken, a total of 192 bacteria isolates belonging to 30 species were obtained, and 81 were selected to evaluate their probiotic potential in in vitro characterization tests. In general, bacteria isolated from the mammary gland have low autoaggregation, cell surface hydrophobicity, and co-aggregation with mastitis etiological bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Also, they have biofilm assembly capacity, inability to produce exopolysaccharides, high production of H2O2, and strong antagonism against mastitis pathogens. Ten lactic bacteria isolates were used in co-culture with human MDA-MB-231 breast epithelial cells to assess their adhesion capacity and impairment of the S. aureus invasion. Our results, therefore, contribute to the future production of new prevention and treatment tools for bovine mastitis.

Some Weissella species are used in probiotic products because of their beneficial effects in humans, whereas some species are considered as opportunistic pathogens that cause infections in humans. Therefore, an accurate and rapid identification of Weissella species is essential to control pathogenic Weissella species or isolate new functional strains with probiotic effects from their habitat. The objective of our study was to extract novel molecular targets using pangenome analysis for the identification of major Weissella species present in food. With 50 genomes representing 11 Weissella species, novel molecular targets were mined based on their 100% presence in the respective strains of the target species and absence in the strains of non-target bacteria. Primers based on molecular targets showed positive results for the corresponding species, whereas 79 non-target strains showed negative results. Standard curves revealed good linearity in the range of 103-108 colony-forming units per reaction. Our method was successfully applied to 74 Weissella strains isolated from food samples to demonstrate that the molecular targets provided a viable alternative to the 16S rRNA sequence. Furthermore, it was possible to identify and quantify Weissella communities in fermented foods. These results demonstrate that our method can be used for effective and accurate screening for the presence of Weissella species in foods. KEY POINTS: ⢠This is first study to mine novel targets for differentiating 11 Weissella species. ⢠The novel targets showed higher resolution than the 16S rRNA gene sequence. ⢠The PCR method effectively detected Weissella species with opposing properties.

Antibiotic Resistance is a growing concern for public health and global economy. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) involved in the production of dairy products and commonly present in the agro-zootechnical environment can act as reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes, acquiring or transferring them to other microorganisms. The review focuses on LAB group of dairy origin (Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Streptococcus, Leuconostoc, Pediococcus and Weissella) and Bifidobacterium genus, considering its large use in dairy industry. We have analyzed data in the last 25 years, highlighting atypical resistance, genetic traits correlated to antibiotic resistance and their ability to be transmitted to other microorganisms; comparative analysis of resistomes was also considered. Differences were observed among wild strains isolated from different regions because of authorized antibiotic use. Commercial strains belonging to Lactobacillus, Streptococcus and Bifidobacterium currently used for industrial dairy products are frequently resistant to gentamycin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol together with tetracycline. The presence of resistant wild LAB in raw milk products has been significantly reduced as a result of worldwide restrictions on the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry. Transmissible resistances are still present in industrial cultures, despite the great effort of starter industries in the process control and the safety screening of commercial cultures.

A ß-mannanase-producing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) was identified as Weissella cibaria F1 according to physiological and biochemical properties, morphological observations, partial sequence of 16S rRNA gene and API 50 CHL test. In order to improve the yield of ß-mannanase, the response surface methodology (RSM) was originally used to optimize the fermentation conditions. The optimization results showed that when the konjac powder, glucose, and initial pH were 9.46 g/L, 14.47 g/L and 5.67, respectively, the ß-mannanase activity increased to 38.81 ± 0.33 U/mL, which was 1.33 times compared to initial yield (29.28 ± 0.26 U/mL). This result was also supported by larger clearance on the konjac powder-MRS agar plate through Congo Red dyeing. The W. cibaria F1 ß-mannanase could improve the clarity of five fruits juice, i.e., apple, orange, peach, persimmon and blue honeysuckle. Among these, peach juice was the most obvious, clarity increasing by 12.8%. These results collectively indicated that W. cibaria F1 ß-mannanase had an applicable potential in food-level fields.

BACKGROUND: Toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems are prevalent adaptive genetic elements in bacterial genomes, which can respond to environmental stress. While, few studies have addressed TA systems in probiotics and their roles in the adaptation to gastrointestinal transit (GIT) environments. RESULTS: The Weissella cibaria 018 could survive in pH 3.0-5.0 and 0.5-3.0 g L-1 bile salt, and its HigBA system responded to the bile salt stress, but not to acid stress. The toxin protein HigB and its cognate antitoxin protein HigA had 85.1% and 100% similarity with those of Lactobacillus plantarum, respectively, and they formed the stable tetramer HigB-(HigA)2 -HigB structure in W. cibaria 018. When exposed to 1.5-3.0 g L-1 bile salt, the transcriptions of higB and higA were up-regulated with 4.39-19.29 and 5.94-30.91 folds, respectively. Meanwhile, W. cibaria 018 gathered into a mass with 48.07% survival rate and its persister cells were found to increase 8.21% under 3.0 g L-1 bile salt. CONCLUSION: The HigBA TA system of W. cibaria 018 responded to the bile salt stress, but not to acid stress, which might offer novel perspectives to understand the tolerant mechanism of probiotics to GIT environment. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
