RESUMO

Oncorhynchus mykiss, a significant aquaculture species, possesses compounds with numerous biological and pharmacological functions, including antioxidant, anticancer, anti-microbial, and anti-obesity effects. However, possible anti-inflammatory effects of lipids extracted from O. mykiss eggs on RAW264.7 cells induced by LPS have not been elucidated yet. The current study identified 13 fatty acids in lipids extracted from O. mykiss eggs that contained high amounts (51.92% of total fatty acids) of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially DHA (33.66%) and EPA (7.77%). These O. mykiss lipids (100-400 µg/mL) showed significant anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting NO and iNOS expression in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. They also inhibited expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α, while upregulating anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-10, IL-11, and TGF-ß. These lipids from O. mykiss effectively inhibited LPS-induced expression CD86 as a surface biomarker on RAW264.7 cells. Additionally, O. mykiss lipids suppressed phosphorylation of p38, JNK, and ERK1/2 and the expression of phosphorylated NF-κB subunit p65. These findings indicate that O. mykiss lipids possess anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways.

Fish eggs of the ovate sole Solea ovata and black porgy Acanthopagrus schlegelii were identified through DNA barcoding of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COX1). Visual taxonomic features were achieved, and photographs of the eggs of both species at different developmental stages were reported for the first time. In addition, the dissolution of oil globules caused by ethanol as egg fixatives was observed. This result showed the importance of using formalin as egg fixatives in the case of morphometric analysis and the necessity of combining molecular and visual taxonomic method for morphological study.

Changes in the proportions of river- and lake-produced eggs of a landlocked amphidromous fish, ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis) in the Lake Biwa water system, Japan, were monitored by stable isotope analysis, based on different δ15 N and δ13 C values of prey organisms between the lake and its tributaries. During the 3 month reproduction season, the δ15 N values of spawned eggs decreased with time. This result implies that there was a shift from lake-produced eggs to river-produced eggs within a reproductive season, based on the observation that adult fish in the lake had previously been shown to have eggs with distinctly higher δ15 N values in their ovaries than those in the tributaries. This explanation was also supported by the change in δ13 C values of the spawned eggs. Furthermore, eggs with lower δ15 N and higher δ13 C values tended to be spawned at less variable depths, suggesting that females spawning river-produced eggs selected the spawning sites from a narrower range. We conclude that stable isotope ratios of spawned eggs can be indicators of the relative contributions of different food chains and can enable comparisons of reproductive characteristics between types of egg.

The early life-history stages of fishes are poorly known, impeding acquisition of the identifications needed to monitor larval recruitment and year-class strength. A comprehensive database of COI sequences, linked to authoritatively identified voucher specimens, promises to change this situation, representing a significant advance for fisheries science. Barcode records were obtained from 2526 early larvae and pelagic eggs of fishes collected on the inshore shelf within 5 km of the KwaZulu-Natal coast, about 50 km south of Durban, South Africa. Barcodes were also obtained from 3215 adults, representing 946 South African fish species. Using the COI reference library on BOLD based on adults, 89% of the immature fishes could be identified to a species level; they represented 450 species. Most of the uncertain sequences could be assigned to a genus, family, or order; only 92 specimens (4%) were unassigned. Accumulation curves based on inference of phylogenetic diversity indicate near-completeness of the collecting effort. The entire set of adult and larval fishes included 1006 species, representing 43% of all fish species known from South African waters. However, this total included 189 species not previously recorded from this region. The fact that almost 90% of the immatures gained a species identification demonstrates the power and completeness of the DNA barcode reference library for fishes generated during the 10 years of FishBOL.

Two miniaturized extraction methods for a wide range of 2-6 ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their alkylated homologues in small lipid-rich biota samples (≤100 mg) have been developed. Both methods utilize liquid extraction (LE) prior to a clean-up step using either normal phase solid phase extraction (SPE) or mixed-phase dispersive SPE (dSPE). Optimization of the methods was achieved by comparing the type and amount of sorbents, drying agents, and solvents used. In order to improve the limits of detection (LOD) of target PAHs under high sensitivity gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis, specific emphasis was given to minimizing lipid co-extraction. The optimized LE-SPE method comprised extraction with dichloromethane/n-hexane (1:1, v/v) and clean-up by silica SPE, whereas the optimized LE-dSPE method comprised extraction with acetonitrile and clean-up with PSA and C18 sorbents. The methods were validated and directly compared through the analysis of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) eggs exposed to oil. The LE-SPE method resulted in lower levels of co-extracted lipids (14.1 ± 1.7 ng/µL) than the LE-dSPE method (60 ± 14 ng/µL). Achieved PAH LODs for the LE-SPE method were typically an order of magnitude lower (<5 ng/g) than for the LE-dSPE method (<125 ng/g). The LE-SPE method offers the possibility for PAH analysis of small samples of fish eggs (~100 mg) exposed to small quantities of crude oil (~1-10 µg/L total PAHs).

The effects of six 1,3;1,6-ß-D-glucooligo- and polysaccharides with different structures (ranging from 1 to 10 kDa in molecular mass and containing 10-25% of ß-1,6-linked glucose residues) from brown algae, Saccharina cichorioides, on development of the chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta (Walbaum), were evaluated. Exposure of chum salmon eggs to 1,3;1,6-ß-D-glucans with a molecular mass of more than 2 kDa increased the survival of embryos and juveniles and their resistance to Saprolegnia infection by up to 2.5-fold, leading to a weight gain in juveniles of 40-55% compared with The control chum salmons. The 1,3;1,6-ß-D-glucans with molecular mass of 6-8 kDa and used at a at concentration of 0.5 mg mL(-1) rendered the best stimulative effect.

The issue of microplastic contamination in seafood is progressively recognised as a significant global issue. This study presents novel findings regarding the detection of microplastics within the eggs of commercially available fish intended for consumption by humans. Eggs of Ompok bimaculatus, Heteropneustes fossilis, Mystus vittatus and Anabas testudineus collected from the Periyar River, Kerala, India were subjected to analysis for the potential presence of microplastics. Out of the 91 fishes (containing eggs) examined, microplastics were observed in the eggs of 2 species, i.e., Ompok bimaculatus and Mystus vittatus. The polymers recorded were polyethylene and polypropylene. Fish eggs are commonly consumed by humans and are highly esteemed as a delectable food. Considering the widespread consumption of fish eggs as a delicacy among humans, there exists a potential route for human exposure to microplastics, which raises concerns regarding public health.

Urbanization and technological advancements result in the dispersion of antropogenic electromagnetic fields (EMF) that can affect on ecosystems. Therefore, it is important to understand their impact on the environment. Aquatic ecosystems are subject to EMF as part of various electricity sources, e.g., high-voltage transmission lines (HVTL). We examined the impact of EMF generated by HVTL on the spatial arrangement and survival of pike (Esox lucius) embryos. Fertilized eggs were incubated under two HVTL configurations 110 kV and 220 kV compared with a control group devoid of anthropogenic EMF. Embryo orientation and survival were monitored until blastopore closure. The control group showed dominance in the arrangement of embryos along the N-S, NNW-SSE, and NNE-SSW axes, with a slight prevalence of northern directions. EMF originating from HVTL did not exert a significant influence on the spatial arrangement of pike embryos, although some deviations from the arrangement noticed in the control group were observed. Increased embryo mortality was observed only at 110 kV site, but probably due to factors unrelated to EMF. In conclusion, EMF generated by HVTL did not significantly change pike embryo orientation or chances of survival. However, longer exposure or higher EMF levels could provoke notable reactions, requiring ongoing evaluation as power networks continue to spread more widely.

The Water-Sediment Regulation Scheme (WSRS) will deliver large amounts of water and sand to the Yellow River basin within a short period of time. This will significantly change the physicochemical environment of the Yellow River estuary and the surrounding marine ecosystem. Its effects on the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of ichthyoplankton are still unknown. In this study, six surface horizontal trawl surveys of ichthyoplankton were conducted during the WSRS in 2020 and 2021 using plankton nets. The results were as follows: (1) the estuarine sedentary fish Cynoglossus joyeri was the main species controlling the succession pattern of summer ichthyoplankton communities in the Yellow River estuary. (2) The WSRS influenced the ichthyoplankton community structure by changing the runoff, salinity, and suspension environment in the estuary. (3) The northern and southeastern parts of the estuary near Laizhou Bay were the main aggregation areas of the ichthyoplankton community.

Determining the temporal community composition of fish eggs in particular regions and understanding the reproductive times of regional fish taxa are key aspects of the management and regulation of regional fish stocks. However, it is extremely difficult to accurately identify fish eggs due to the absence of diagnostic morphological characters. We sampled fish eggs in the lower Hongshuihe River (an upper mainstem of the Pearl River) between May and September 2020. We then used DNA barcoding to determine the species composition of the egg pool and to predict the spawning periods of the identified species. A total of 641 eggs and 17 larvae were chosen for molecular identification; 397 eggs and 17 larvae yielded high-quality barcoding sequences. The high failure rate (~38%) was most likely due to long-term storage in low concentrations of ethanol prior to molecular analysis. We successfully classified 392 eggs into 10 species and 13 larvae into four species using public databases. Most of the species identified in the egg pool were small and/or benthic, and migratory species were rare. This may partially reflect the adverse effects of hydropower cascade development in this river section. We also found that spawning periods tended to be species-specific. Our study provides a reference for the conservation and management of regional fishery stocks.

Understanding the anthropogenic impact of oyster farms is essential for the management and conservation of marine fishes. In Japan, Hiroshima Bay is the region with the most intense oyster farming and thus suitable to study the impact of these farms. Here, we surveyed spherical planktonic eggs of the black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegelii, one of the most abundant fish in the Bay. Our survey was performed at fourteen stations which included places with oyster farms and historical spawning grounds. We found the highest egg densities in four stations, one with historical spawning aggregations and three with major oyster farms. Besides, surveys at the innermost part of Hiroshima Bay, where two major rivers discharge, showed a low density of eggs indicating that black sea bream avoids spawning in low salinity areas. Our study suggests that oyster farms benefit spawners of black sea bream by providing more food sources than historical spawning grounds for efficient spawning. Yet, whether oyster farms represent a full advantage for the species remains unclear, particularly because they are known to host jellyfishes that prey on eggs and limit water flow that can influence the survival of fish eggs.

Chemical liver injury is a common cause of liver disease primarily characterized by oxidative stress and inflammation. Sialoglycoproteins isolated from the eggs of Carassius auratus (Ca-SGP) have been proved to exhibit the antioxidant effect. However, the effect of Ca-SGP on liver injury remains unclear. Thus, this study was aimed to determine the effect of Ca-SGP on CCL4-induced chronic chemical liver injury and explore the underlying molecular mechanism. Results showed that Ca-SGP mitigated the elevated levels of serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, inhibited the systemic oxidative stress, and reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-1ß. Histologic results showed that Ca-SGP supplements alleviated hepatocyte necrosis and liver macrophage infiltration. Further, Ca-SGP supplement decreased endoplasmic reticulum stress-related proteins expression, including BiP, IRE-α, p-IRE-α, and TRAF2, and further inhibited the trigger of the NF-κB pathway. In summary, Ca-SGP might be a novel agent for liver injury treatment, and its potential mechanism was related to the inhibition of liver inflammation induced by the endoplasmic reticulum. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The fish egg is an important by-product in fish processing. Carassius auratus is a common freshwater fish with large catches and low prices. However, the eggs of C. auratus are usually direct discard or processed into salted roe products, and the quality and value of these salted products are unsatisfactory. In this current study, we confirmed that sialoglycoproteins isolated from the C. auratus eggs have the potential for the treatment of liver injury and determined that its mechanism is related to the endoplasmic reticulum and inflammation, which put forward a new idea for solving the by-product of fish processing.

Coral reefs are an important part of the ocean ecosystem and are a vital spawning ground for marine fish. Microorganisms are abundant in this environment and play a key role in the growth and development of host species. Many studies have investigated the microbial communities of fish with a focus on the intestinal microbiome of laboratory-reared adult fish. Little is known about the relationship between fish eggs and their microorganisms, especially as microbial communities relate to wild fish eggs in coral reefs. In this study, we analyzed the microbial communities of two species of coral fish eggs, Acanthopagrus schlegelii and Halichoeres nigrescens, using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing technology. Pseudomonas, Archromobacter, and Serratia were the main bacterial genera associated with these fish eggs and are known to be bacteria with potentially pathogenic and spoilage effects. The microbial community structures of Acanthopagrus schlegelii and Halichoeres nigrescens eggs were separated based on the 30 most abundant operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS) further confirmed that the microbial communities of coral fish eggs differ by species, which may be due to host selection. A functional prediction of the microbial communities indicated that most of the microbial communities were chemoheterotrophic and involved in nitrogen cycling. Our results showed that the microbial communities of coral fish eggs were distinct by species and that key microorganisms were potentially pathogenic, leading to the spoilage of fish eggs, high mortality, and low incubation rates. This study provided new insights for understanding the relationship between microorganisms and wild fish eggs.

In this study, the eggs of 30 wild Black Sea whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus, Nordmann, 1840) and 30 farmed freshwater rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum, 1792) collected from Samsun Province in Turkey were analyzed to determine the level of contamination by nine organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), namely α-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH), ß-HCH, γ-HCH (lindane), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), aldrin, 2,4'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), 4,4'-DDT, 2,4'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), 4,4'-DDE, and 15 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (PCB-28, -70, -74, -81, -99, -101, -118, -138, -153, -156, -170, -180, -183, -187, and -208), and their potential use as biomarkers to monitor levels of environmental contamination. OCPs and PCBs in the fat of fish eggs were extracted cryogenically and their concentrations were determined with a gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD). The whiting eggs showed high OCP and PCB levels compared to the rainbow trout eggs. The median ∑ DDT values for whiting and rainbow trout eggs were 1601.62 ng g-1 fat (range 824.87-5049.81) and 406.49 ng g-1 fat (range 199.88-588.82); median ∑Indicator PCBs were 1264.24 ng g-1 fat (range 520.05-6140.32) and 82.11 ng g-1 fat (range 2.85-215.97); and median ∑ HCHs were 155.66 ng g-1 fat (range 35.45-330.40) and 13.48 ng g-1 fat (range 4.44-66.44), respectively. In the whiting eggs, the ∑Indicator PCB level was above the maximum residue limit (MRL) of 200 ng g-1 fat stated in the European Commission Regulation (EC) and Turkish Food Codex (TFC). In addition, there was a significant difference between the contamination levels of the eggs of the two species. In conclusion, it appears that fish eggs can serve as a valuable biomarker for the level of contamination of persistent organochlorine contaminants in different aquatic environments.

In the last few years, the consumption of fish eggs has increased rapidly, finding widespread use also in mass catering. This increase has involved also those of the Peter's fish (Zeus faber). Females of this species, by their reproductive characteristics, have highly developed gonads in different periods of the year, making the raw material easy to find. The aim of the present study was to perform a quality assessment of Zeus faber ovaries regularly commercialized for human consumption. A total number of 34 samples, divided in fresh (11) and frozen (23), were processed for microbiological characterization, parasitological and histological evaluations. Fresh and frozen samples have significant (P<0.01) differences in total bacterial charge, with values of 4.75±0.5 Log CFU/g and 3.65±0.7 Log CFU/g respectively. The mean value of Enterobacteriaceae was 2.58±0.7 Log CFU/g in fresh products, while 52.17% (12) of frozen samples reported loads of <1 Log CFU/g. No Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes were found. Aeromonas spp. was detected in two frozen sample (with loads of 2.2 and <1 Log CFU/g) and in 5 fresh ovaries with value ranged from 1.70 to 3.48 Log CFU/g. Vibrio spp. was found in 4 (36.36%) and 3 (13.04%) of fresh and frozen samples respectively, with loads always <1 Log CFU/g. All 31 Vibrio strains isolated, were identified as Vibrio alginolyticus, and 61.29% (19) of them was positive for the ToxRS factor and 6.45% (2) for ToxR. The 47.06% (16) of total samples showed infestations by larvae of Anisakis Type 1 in the serous and inside the ovary. In this last case, histologically it was found to be free larvae. This study attested satisfactory hygiene conditions for Zeus faber ovaries currently marked for human consumption. The presence of potentially pathogenic strains of V. alginolyticus and Aeromonas spp., but above all the frequent infestation by Anisakis larvae, represent a potentially hazard for the consumer.

It has been proposed that the multiple pressures of fishing and petroleum activities impact fish stocks in synergy, as fishing-induced demographic changes in a stock may lead to increased sensitivity to detrimental effects of acute oil spills. High fishing pressure may erode the demographic structure of fish stocks, lead to less diverse spawning strategies, and more concentrated distributions of offspring in space and time. Hence an oil spill may potentially hit a larger fraction of a year-class of offspring. Such a link between demographic structure and egg distribution was recently demonstrated for the Northeast Arctic stock of Atlantic cod for years 1959-1993. We here estimate that this variation translates into a two-fold variation in the maximal proportion of cod eggs potentially exposed to a large oil spill. With this information it is possible to quantitatively account for demographic structure in prospective studies of population effects of possible oil spills.

To assess the fish attraction and shelter effects of the artificial reefs in Qingshan Bay of Qingdao, the species composition and distribution patterns of ichthyoplankton in artificial reefs were investigated using vertical and horizontal tows in 2014 and 2015. In total, 7306 fish eggs and 52 fish larvae, belonging to 4 orders, 9 families, 11 genera and 12 species, were collected during 7 cruises in spring, summer and autumn of 2014. In 2015, 10373 eggs and 159 fish larvae, belonging to 6 orders, 11 families, 14 genera and 15 species, were collected in the same period as in 2014. Perciformes were the majority for both fish eggs and larvae collected during the two surveys, followed by Pleuronectiformes. Among fish eggs, Sillago japonica and Cynoglossus joyneri were the most dominant species. Among fish larvae, S. japonica exhibited the highest dominance but was not the dominant species. The high dominant species in both fish eggs and larvae appeared alternately in diffe-rent seasons. The Margalef richness index (R), Shannon diversity index (H) and Pielou evenness index (J) of ichthyoplankton community were low during the spring, summer, and autumn, showing an instable community structure of ichthyoplankton. The average trophic level of adult fish corresponding to the ichthyoplankton collected in the two years were 3.71 and 3.78, respectively, and both belonged to low carnivorous fish of third trophic level. All the species were either warm-tempe-rate species or warm-water species, which was coincident with the warm-temperate zone characteristic. Comprehensive analysis showed that the biodiversity of the ichthyoplankton community within the artificial reef areas was higher than that outside the artificial reef areas, which might be linked to flow velocity, flow field characteristics, or spatial heterogeneity of artificial reef areas.

We demonstrate here the existence of a range of size-independent reproductive tactics in teleostean fish involving the allocation of a size-dependent reproductive effort between fecundity and egg size. Despite considerable evidence that larger eggs and the larvae hatching from them are more likely to survive than smaller ones, we found no evidence of evolutionary trends towards greater egg sizes. Fish with pelagic eggs tend to spawn many, and therefore small, eggs, whereas demersal spawners tend to produce large, and therefore few, eggs. Maximizing egg number should increase the number of eggs hatching in suitable locations in the patchy pelagic environment and, hence, increase the reproductive success of pelagic spawners. On the other hand, the reproductive success of demersal spawners, which reduce the variance in growing conditions experienced by the off spring, should be more dependent on the survival of the individual larvae, which increases as egg size increases.

At present, nanoparticles are beginning to influence our lives in many ways and understanding the environmental health and safety aspect of nanomaterials has become a crucial issue. The aim of the work was to assess and compare the acute toxicity of 31 different nanomaterials to fish mature individuals Danio rerio with that to fish early life stages on using evaluation of the 48- and 96- hour LC50 values. A further aim was to evaluate teratogenicity of the nanoparticles tested to fish eggs. The nanoparticles tested were: 8 pure metals, 10 metal oxides, 5 other metal compounds and their mixtures, 2 silicon compounds, 3 calcium compounds, and 3 carbon compounds. Using 48-h and 96-h tests of acute toxicity (according to OECD 203), we evaluated mortality data, LC50 values, occurrence of malformations, as well as hatching time. In our study, 6 kinds of nanoparticles - calcium oxide, copper, copper in the form of oxide and CuZnFe4O4, magnesium oxide, and nickel - caused cumulative mortality. Two kinds of nanoparticles - copper and silver - were toxic for fish with LC50 values of approximately 3 mg/L. We did not observe marked differences between the 48-hour and 96-hour acute toxicity LC50 values, yet the possibility to evaluate hatching time in the 96-h acute fish toxicity test seems to be an advantage against that of the 48-hour toxicity.
