RESUMO

Gender norms related to sexual behavior have a pervasive impact on the psychosocial development of men. These norms have been theorized to influence the formation of male sexual scripts, including those that place high emphasis on performative abilities. While research has indicated that endorsing performance-based scripts can have negative consequences, little work has examined how this sexual ideology is communicated by men to their peer groups. Using structural equation modeling, the current study tested a model of openness to communicate sexual behavior that is incongruent with existing performance-based scripts. A sample of 424 men were recruited from a variety of Internet platforms to participate in a one-time online survey. Results demonstrated that endorsing performance-based scripts impeded men's ability to discuss sexual behavior with male peers, female peers, and sexual partners. Men's lack of transparency about particular sexual experiences may be contributing to harmful narratives that rigidly emphasize sexual performance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hypersexual disorder (HD) is defined as a condition in which the individual loses control over engagement in sexual behaviors, leading to distress and negative effects on key life areas. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been proven to reduce symptoms of hypersexual behavior; however, no randomized controlled study of CBT interventions for HD has been reported previously. AIM: To investigate the efficacy of group-administered CBT for HD. METHODS: Male participants (n = 137) diagnosed with HD, were randomized between 7 weeks of group-administered CBT (n = 70) and a waitlist control receiving the intervention after 8 weeks (n = 67). Measurements were administered at pre-, mid-, and posttreatment, with follow-up after 3 and 6 months. OUTCOMES: The primary outcome was the Hypersexual Disorder: Current Assessment Scale (HD:CAS), and secondary outcomes were the Sexual Compulsivity Scale (SCS) and measures of depression (Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS-S), psychological distress (Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation Outcome Measure (CORE-OM), and treatment satisfaction (CSQ-8). RESULTS: A significantly greater decrease in HD symptoms and sexual compulsivity, as well as significantly greater improvements in psychiatric well-being, were found for the treatment condition compared with the waitlist. These effects remained stable at 3 and 6 months after treatment. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: CBT can ameliorate HD symptoms and psychiatric distress, suggesting that the CBT program may serve as a first-line treatment in clinical settings. STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS: This is the first randomized controlled study evaluating the efficacy of a CBT program in a rather large sample of HD-specific diagnosed men. The long-term treatment effects are vague due to the low response rate on follow-up measurements, and the efficacy of this program for hypersexual women remains unknown. CONCLUSION: This study supports the efficacy of a group-administered CBT program as a treatment option for HD; however, future studies should include women, comprise dismantling analysis of the constituting interventions, and evaluate other treatment formats, for example, administration via the Internet. RESUMO

Each year large numbers of Western men travel to Thailand for sex tourism. Although many will use condoms during their sexual encounters, others will not, potentially exposing themselves to the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Although sex tourism in Thailand has been well documented, the social drivers underpinning voluntary sexual risk-taking through the avoidance of condoms remain poorly understood. Engaging with R.W. Connell's concept of hegemonic masculinity and drawing on data collected from 1237 online discussion board posts and 14 face-to-face interviews, this study considers the ways in which understandings and performances of masculinities may inform the sexual risk-taking behaviours of Western male sex tourists. It argues that for some of these men, unprotected sex is viewed not as a reckless behaviour but, instead, as a safe and appropriate masculine practice, supported by relationships that are often framed as romantic and within a setting where HIV is still largely considered a homosexual disease. With sex workers often disempowered to request safer sexual practices, and some men's attitudes towards unprotected sex resistant to external health promotion advice, the paper concludes by considering what this might mean for policy and practice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Videogame use is increasingly prevalent in people of all ages, and despite the wide amount of scientific evidence proving a role for electronic entertainment in human health, there is no evidence about the relation between use of videogames and sexual health. AIM: To investigate the association between use of videogames and male sexual health. METHODS: We administered the two validated questionnaires, the Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT) and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-15), to men 18 to 50 years old recruited through social networks and specific websites. In addition to the questionnaires, volunteers were asked to provide information on their gaming habit and lifestyle. OUTCOMES: An extended version of the IIEF-15 and PEDT, including data about gaming habits and relevant lifestyles. RESULTS: From June 18, 2014 through July 31, 2014, 599 men 18 to 50 years old completed the questionnaires. One hundred ninety-nine men reported no sexual activity during the previous 4 weeks; four records were rejected because of inherent errors. The remaining 396 questionnaires were analyzed, with 287 "gamers" (playing >1 hour/day on average) and 109 "non-gamers" providing all the required information. We found a lower prevalence of premature ejaculation in gamers compared with non-gamers (mean PEDT score = 3.57 ± 3.38 vs 4.52 ± 3.7, P < .05, respectively). Analysis of the IIEF-15 showed no significant differences between gamers and non-gamers in the domains of erectile function, orgasmic function, and overall satisfaction. Median scores for the sexual desire domain were higher for non-gamers (median score [interquartile range] 9 [8-9] vs 9 [8-10], respectively; P = .0227). CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: These results support the correlation between videogame use and male sexual health. Compared with non-gamers, men playing videogames for more than 1 hour/day were less likely to have premature ejaculation but more likely to have decreased sexual desire. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: This is the first study aimed to assess male sexual health in gamers. We identified an association between PEDT and IIEF scores and videogame use; however, these findings require validation through interventional studies. Furthermore, volunteers were recruited through social networks, thus increasing the risk of recruitment bias. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first observational study investigating the link between electronic entertainment and male sexuality, specifically for ejaculatory response and sexual desire. RESUMO

Men's perpetration of gender-based violence remains a global public health issue. Violence prevention experts call for engagement of boys and men to change social norms around masculinity in order to prevent gender-based violence. Yet, men do not comprise a homogenous category. Drawing on probability estimates of men who report same-sex practices and preferences captured in a multi-country gender-based violence prevention survey in the Asia-Pacific region, we test the effects of sexuality-related factors on men's adverse life experiences. We find that sexual minority men face statistically higher risk of lifetime adversity related to gender-based violence, stemming from gender inequitable norms in society. Sexuality is thus a key axis of differentiation among men in the Asia-Pacific region, influencing health and wellbeing and reflecting men's differential engagement with dominant norms of masculinity. Integrating awareness of male sexual diversity into gender-based violence prevention interventions, particularly those that work with boys and men, and bridging violence prevention programming between sexual minority communities and women, are essential to tackle the root drivers of violence.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Prostate cancer affects a growing number of men. Although erectile dysfunction is a well-known side effect, its impact on sex life and sexuality is under-researched. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was therefore to elucidate the effect of surgical treatment for prostate cancer on men's sexuality. METHODS: Data for the descriptive qualitative study were collected in interviews. The author applied a phenomenological-hermeneutic frame of understanding. RESULTS: Four themes appeared in the analysis of the interviews: lack of control, sense of self, intimate relations and redefining sexuality. CONCLUSION: Men experience erectile dysfunction as a negative influence on their sexuality with respect to their sex life, sense of self and intimate relations. The dysfunction is thus shown not only to affect sexual life but also to have repercussions for a range of aspects in male intimate life. A broader perspective should be applied in supporting the men's efforts towards improving their quality of life, for example through sexual counselling services performed by nurses.

RESUMO

Pornography has become a primary source of sexual education. At the same time, mainstream commercial pornography has coalesced around a relatively homogenous script involving violence and female degradation. Yet, little work has been done exploring the associations between pornography and dyadic sexual encounters: What role does pornography play inside real-world sexual encounters between a man and a woman? Cognitive script theory argues media scripts create a readily accessible heuristic model for decision-making. The more a user watches a particular media script, the more embedded those codes of behavior become in their worldview and the more likely they are to use those scripts to act upon real life experiences. We argue pornography creates a sexual script that then guides sexual experiences. To test this, we surveyed 487 college men (ages 18-29 years) in the United States to compare their rate of pornography use with sexual preferences and concerns. Results showed the more pornography a man watches, the more likely he was to use it during sex, request particular pornographic sex acts of his partner, deliberately conjure images of pornography during sex to maintain arousal, and have concerns over his own sexual performance and body image. Further, higher pornography use was negatively associated with enjoying sexually intimate behaviors with a partner. We conclude that pornography provides a powerful heuristic model which is implicated in men's expectations and behaviors during sexual encounters.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of continent external urinary diversion type Mitrofanoff on male sexuality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 1992 and 2011, 140 patients underwent continent urinary diversion type Mitrofanoff at an academic hospital. Among 76 men, 46 were interviewed about their sexuality after this operation. This study was performed using a set of validated questionnaires (IIEF, DAN PSS and Urolife), grouped by the model of the CTMH. Patients were divided according to their marital status: group 1: patients married before surgery (15 cases), group 2: patients married after surgery (7 cases) and group 3: singles (24 cases). RESULTS: In the first group, the functional dimension of sexuality was positive with an overall score of 81%, the sexual discomfort score was assessed at 26 % and the sexual satisfaction score was 77%. In the second group, sexual function was considered conserved in all cases with a satisfaction score estimated at 98%. These patients reported a feeling of well-being following the disappearance of urinary incontinence with integrity of their body images. In contrast, in the last group, relatively impaired sexual function was noted (65%) with a satisfaction score estimated at 59%. These disorders were multifactorial, mainly related to neurological causal pathology. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first study about male sexuality in patients with a continent urinary diversion type Mitrofanoff. Marital status has a major role in the sexuality of these patients. A prospective study with pre- and postoperative evaluation will better clarify the factors affecting sexuality in these patients.

RESUMO

Mindfulness practice and mindfulness-based interventions are widely known, especially for women's sexuality. However, it is currently unknown how this practice affects the experience of male sexuality, possibly due to the existence of pharmacological treatments that are usually the first choice of treatment for men. The objectives of this study are to explore the influence of mindfulness on different components of men's sexuality from a scoping review of relevant scientific articles existing in the literature. A literature search from 2010 to 2022 was carried out in the electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Dialnet, SciELO Citation Index, and Redalyc. Out of the 238 studies, 12 that met the defined selection criteria were selected. The analysis of these studies seems to indicate that the practice of mindfulness favours different variables of male sexuality, such as satisfaction and sexual functioning or genital self-image. Mindfulness-based interventions represent a valuable and promising contribution. No adverse effects were detected from the review of scientific articles considered in this work. Nevertheless, more randomized studies with active control groups are necessary to establish the benefits of mindfulness-based interventions in sex therapy for men.

RESUMO

Introduction Mammals' sexual functions exhibit seasonal variations that have been attributed to changes in the daylight. In this study, taking into consideration endocrine and psychogenic status, we aimed to investigate whether human males experience changes in erectile functions and sexual desire depending on daylight periods and seasons, and whether periodicity exists in human sexual behavior. Materials and methods International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and psychiatric scale scores of 221 male patients were evaluated. In addition, hormonal parameters of the patients were examined. These data were first evaluated in two groups (summer and winter) according to local daylight amounts the participants received. Then IIEF scores were also analyzed according to four conventional seasons (winter, spring, summer, and autumn). Results There was no significant difference in laboratory data, psychiatric scale scores and IIEF evaluations between summer and winter groups. Moreover, no significant difference was found in terms of sexual desire and erectile functions in terms of four seasons (p > 0.05). Conclusion According to the results of this study, there is no periodicity in human sexual functions both in relation to daylight and four seasons.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Peyonie's disease (PD) mostly affects males in the fifth decade of life, with a prevalence in the general population ranging between 0.5% and 20.3%. The pathology of PD is characterized by fibrosis of the tunic albuginea of the cavernous bodies of the penis, with the presence of pain in the erection and penile deformity. This is associated with decreased sexual function for both participants. The objective of the study was to investigate the influence of PD pathology on both male patients' and their female partners' sexual spheres, and analyze changes in sexual function and perception following penile correction surgery. METHODS: Prospective study, we included male patients with PD and their female partner sexually active. Patients underwent corporoplasty with multiple plications. The male and female sexuality was evaluated before surgery and three months after male treatment by the Female sexual Function Index (FSFI); International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF); Visual Analogical Scale (VAS). RESULTS: From January 2018 to November 2019 we included 35 couple. The female subjects before partner's surgery presented dyspareunia, loss of sexual desire, inability to achieve orgasm, and sexual dissatisfaction. At three months after surgical treatment there was an improvement of sexual function in both male patients and female partners (desire P<0.0001, arousal P<0.0001, lubrification P<0.0001, orgasm P<0.0001, satisfaction P<0.0001, pain P<0.0001). As regarding male patients the pain decreased significantly (VAS score from 6 to 2.5), while there was no statistically significant improvement in erectile function (P=0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that a viable approach to treatment of PD patients that involves their partners could lead to better functional and psychological results.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine if sexual function of male partners changed after surgery for pelvic floor disorders and to explore associated factors. STUDY DESIGN: This was an observational follow-up study at the Gynecological Department at the St Olavs University Hospital, Trondheim. The sample consisted of 35 male partners of women scheduled for pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence surgery. Self-administered questionnaires, containing validated instruments as well as exploratory questions, were sent to women and their partners before and one year after pelvic floor surgery. Vaginal dimensions were measured in all women according to the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification System, both before and after the surgery. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The Brief Sexual Function Instrument and the presence of erectile dysfunction. RESULTS: One year after pelvic floor surgery, scores for sexual drive, erection and overall satisfaction from the Brief Sexual Function Instrument were unchanged; the ejaculation score (range 0-4) had mildly improved from a range of 4 (median 4) to a range of 3.5 (median 4), (p = 0.014). The proportion of men with erectile dysfunction was unchanged, while the proportion of men reporting vaginal wind had significantly decreased (p = 0.016). None of the baseline factors, subjective experiences or vaginal dimensions at baseline or follow-up were associated with the improved ejaculation score; only a reduction in the proportion of men reporting their partners with dyspareunia (ns) was significantly correlated (Spearman's rho 0.42, p = 0.019). CONCLUSION: Sexual function of male partners was unchanged or mildly improved after pelvic floor surgery.

Abstract: This article analyzes the construction of meaning and knowledge about sex between men and male sexuality in crimes against military honor in the Armada Argentina (1960-1980) in a context of increasing authoritarianism. In contrast to the escalating repression of the period, the success of the armed forces in building a hegemonic masculinity was far from being a reality in the decades of 1960s and 1970s. Instead of a well articulated discourse or device, the notions produced during military trials did not constitute an authoritative knowledge (Jordan, 1991) on male sexuality. In methodological terms, the article echoes Guinzburg (1991), who argues that the "archives of repression" can serve both to build a history of repression and a study of subjective agency.

Abstract The aim of this article is to demonstrate the negotiations and disputes between different kinds of knowledge and power in the history of the Brazilian National Policy for Comprehensive Men’s Healthcare based on the creation in 2008 of the Technical Area for Men’s Health within the Ministry of Health’s Department of Strategic Programs. We observed the Brazilian Society of Urology’s position as the policy was being drawn up, including the discourse adopted, based on interviews held with managers from the Ministry of Health and the assistant representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Brazil. We analyzed the visibility of the male body in signs of resistance to the interventions of biopower in the expression of the right to health.

The article examines the National Policy of Comprehensive Men and Women's Healthcare of the Brazilian government. Documents analyzed were: "Principles and guidelines of the National Policy of Comprehensive Men's Healthcare", "Principles and guidelines of the National Policy of Comprehensive Women's Healthcare", and interviews to federal managers of the Technical Field of Men's Healthcare. Discourse analysis from Michel Foucault allowed to deal with the corpus in their production conditions through an analytical -descriptive gesture handling of scattered statements. The central argument is that the health policy analyzed has a "gender" as a discursive network that produces the subject references its intelligibility. Stand - in analyzes the emergence of the female subject of care, represented by the woman-mother hygienic and woman -subject, and the man as the subject of rights to health under the sign of newness of his birth. The dialogue with Judith Butler and Jacques Derrida is one of the enablers axes theoretical analysis of the issues that build the product , in addition to the title itself also seeks to highlight , namely the biopolitics gears that move the policy in question.

The present Internship Report is integrated in the 7th Master and Post- -Graduate Course in Maternal Health and Obstetrics of Lisbon Higher School of Nursing, which reflects the learning path carried out in the Internship with Report, focusing on the development of the skills of Specialist Nurse in Maternal Health and Obstetrics and Masters, describing the activities carried out. As well as all the path carried out to develop the theme proposed by me, in accordance with the CMESMO study plan, during the specialized nursing care, addressing the theme of male sexuality in pregnancy. A Scoping Review was undertaken, according the methodology of The Joanna Briggs Institute, to develop skills on the chosen theme. Nursing care were provided according the theoretical Nancy Roper Model of Nursing. From the data obtained with the male partners, I could determine that there are changes in male sexuality due to fears and doubts related to sexual intercourse in pregnancy, female partners' discomfort and a lack of knowledge about female sexual changes during the pregnancy. Man feel the need of information to adapt to the new condition of life. However, most of Health Professionals do not feel comfortable in addressing the issue. The male partners expect support and information from the Specialist Nurses to develop mechanisms of coping, allowing them to feel readapted to sexuality. The results are in accordance with the scientific evidence found. The results allow us to identify the partners' knowledge about the female sexual changes during pregnancy, the sexual modifications experienced by the male partners, and other needs in order to develop coping mechanisms to overcome those changes. This enables the creation of precocious intervention programs, duly contextualized and evaluated by the specialist nurses.

This article discusses the passage of the "second sexological wave", which emerged in the middle of the 20th century, to a third phase represented by Sexual Medicine, which came to light in the last decade of the 20th century. I analyze the emergence of Sexual Medicine as part of a broader process of "biologization" of the human, which was parallel to an important transformation in the mode of operation and production of the pharmaceutical industry. Two crucial points in the transition from the second sexology to Sexual Medicine will be addressed: the medical reconfiguration of impotence through the construction and dissemination of the diagnosis of "erectile dysfunction" and its effects on male sexuality; the changing of focus from female (or couple) sexuality to male sexuality and its consequences. The broader goal of the article is to present and discuss the medicalization of male sexuality and its significance regarding gender relations.

The scope of this article is to reflect upon the medicalization of male sexuality based on the counterpoint between two distinct historical processes. The first of these is the major trend towards intervention in male sexuality which occurred in the early twentieth century in Brazil as a result of syphilis and the broader campaign against venereal disease. The second concerns the medicalization of sexuality through the focus on erectile dysfunction and the creation of a new pharmacology of sex which has become inevitable with the transition to the twenty-first century. This contrast enables us to see some important differences. The study highlights the new emphasis on the notion of sexual health based on individual improvement and use of medications. It also demonstrates that the promotion of male interest in sexual performance serves as a gateway to approach the treatment of male health.
