OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the maxillary sinus (MS) volume and pathologies, nasal septum (NS) deviation, and MS septa formation in children with and without cleft lip and palate (CLP); also to investigate the possible causes of MS pathologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images of 200 (100 CLP, 100 control) children (5-18 years old) were evaluated from the computer database of Marmara University Faculty of Dentistry. Children with a history of maxillofacial trauma, diseases that affect bone metabolism, orthognathic surgery, extrinsic pathologies of the MS, and accompanying syndromes were excluded. NS deviation, MS septa formation, volume, and pathologies evaluated using Mimics® software. In statistical evaluations; Student t test, paired sample t test, Chi-Square test, Fisher's Exact Chi-Square test, Continuity Correction, Chi-square analysis in one-eyed layout, McNemar test, and logistic regression analysis were used. RESULTS: Total MS volume was smaller in the CLP group (21 232 mm3 ) than in control children (23 763 mm3 ) (P:0.026). NS deviation and MS pathology were more frequent in the CLP. In logistic regression analysis, there was no significant relation between the presence of NS deviation and pathology in MS. The presence of CLP increased the risk of MS pathology by 2.6 times. CONCLUSION: We found that children with CLP have less MS volume and an increased rate of NS deviation and MS pathology compared to the control group. Further radiological and clinical studies are needed to explain the predisposing factors of MS pathology in children with CLP.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the maxillary sinus characteristics of patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP).The study included manuscripts which met the following criteria: (1) study of individuals with CLP in any age group or gender and (2) study of individuals in whom assessment of maxillary sinus characteristics had been done by cone-beam computed tomography. Studies with (1) individuals having special health-care needs and (2) individuals with any syndrome affecting the development of the head and neck were excluded.In total, 11 articles were included in the review, based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Pooled maxillary sinus volume (MSV) on the cleft sides of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) was found to be 9433.14 mm3 (95% CI, 7453.99-11 412.30), which was significantly smaller than that of controls. The meta-analyses also revealed significantly reduced MSV on the cleft sides of patients with UCLP. The differences between cleft and noncleft sides of the patients with UCLP were not found to be statistically significant. Strength-of-evidence was found to be moderate in 4 characteristics, along with 10 out of 11 articles showing low risk-of-bias.It was concluded that MSV was reduced and mucosal thickening was increased/present in patients with CLP as compared with controls. The differences between MSV of cleft and noncleft sides of the patients with UCLP could not be established. However, heterogeneity was found in terms of sample size, stratification of samples by age, and evaluation of some confounding factors.

The goal of study was to explore the role of 3D CBCT (cone beam computer tomography) in detecting impacted canines and their movement to evaluate the influence of orthodontic therapy parameters on treatment options, and to monitor quality of healing process based on shape and size of sinus maxillae volume. It is known that the volume of maxillary sinus plays an important role in patients with impacted teeth. The prospective study consisted of 26 individuals. For each individual, pre-treatment and post-treatment CBCT data were acquired. Changes of size, and position of impacted canine in 3D CBCT image before and after therapy were prepared using 3D reconstruction. Volumetric measurements of the maxillary sinuses were performed before and after orthodontic therapy of impacted canines, using InVivo6 software. The main effects MANOVA performed on linear measurements showed metric differences between pre-op and post-op images. A paired t-test showed no statistically significant differences between pre-op and post-op values of the sinus volume. Changes of size and position of impacted canine in 3D image before and after therapy were precise and reproducible, using 3D reconstruction in three planes - horizontal, midsagittal, and coronal. The linear measurements showed metric differences between pre-op and post-op images.

PURPOSE: The antrochoanal polyp (ACP), otherwise known as the Killain polyp, is a benign lesion that originates from maxillary sinus mucosa, extending from the accessory ostium towards the middle meatus, and later tends to protrude posteriorly towards the choana and nasopharynx. Many studies have emphasized that its etiopathogenesis is unclear. Research suggests that chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis are factors that play an important role in the formation of ACP, as well as anatomical variations. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of anatomical variations and maxillary sinus volume in patients diagnosed with anthrochoanal polyp. METHODS: Paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNS CT) images of patients with unilateral ACP patients were examined. The non-ACP sides of the patients comprised the control group. Nasal septal deviation, agger nasi cells, concha bullosa, paradoxical middle turbinate, hyperpneumotized ethmoid bulla, uncinate pathology (medialized or pneumatized uncinate), haller cell, accessory ostium, maxillary sinus retention cyst and maxillary sinus volumes were evaluated. RESULTS: The study included a total of 54 patients (33 females, 21 males). Mean patient age was 22.92 ± 13.95 (range 6-56) years. Mean maxillary sinus volume was 17.88 ± 5.16 mm3 for the ACP sides and 16.37 ± 4.55 mm3 for the non-ACP sides. Maxillary sinus volume was significantly larger in the ACP side (p = 0.000). Concha bullosa was observed on the ACP side in 23 patients (42.6%) and in the non-ACP side in 21 patients (38.9%). Agger nasi cells were observed in the ACP side in 47 patients (87.0%) and in the non-ACP side in 42 patients (77.7%). Hyperpneumatized ethmoid bulla was observed in the ACP side in 14 patients (25.9%) and in the non-ACP side in 12 patients (22.2%). Haller cells were observed in the ACP side in seven patients (12.96%) and in the non-ACP side in ten patients (18.51%). CONCLUSION: Disrupted airflow of the well-developed maxillary sinus cavity due to anatomical variations seems to be an effective factor in the formation of ACP.

PURPOSE: Various mechanisms play an important role in the growth of maxillary sinus cavities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations of maxillary sinus volume (MSV) with nasal septal deviation (NSD), concha bullosa (CB) and impacted teeth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. METHODS: From 55 patients, a total of 110 maxillary sinus images were obtained and examined. Data including age, gender, impacted third molar, canine teeth, NSD, and CB were examined. MSV was measured using the MIMICS software (Materialise HQ Technologielaan, Leuven, Belgium). All statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 21) software and p values < 0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. RESULTS: Mean volume of the right maxillary sinus was 13.566 cm3, while the left was 13.882 cm3. The rate of patients with right and left impacted third molar teeth was 49.1% and 47.3%, respectively. The rate of right and left impacted canines was 1.8% and 5.5%, respectively. NSD was found in 56.4% of CBCT examinations and right and left CB were observed in 30.9% and 32.7% of the patients' examinations, respectively. Males had a significantly higher mean sinus volume than females for both sides (p < 0.05). There were no significant correlations between MSV and age (p > 0.05). No significant differences were found between MSV and impacted teeth, NSD and CB (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: NSD, CB, impacted teeth, and age were not found to be related to MSV. Gender had an effect on MSV and males had higher mean sinus volume than females.

AIM: Sinus maxillaris is an important anatomical formation in many branches of dentistry due to its proximity to the field of work. Various methods have been used in literature to measure the maxillary sinus volume (MSV) such as cadavers, stereology, two-dimensional conventional radiographs, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The aim of this study is to evaluate the change of maxillary sinus volume according to age and gender with MIMICS 19.0 (Materialise HQ Technologielaan, Leuven, Belgium) which is one of three-dimensional modeling software. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was performed in 200 patients selected by a retrospective review of the archives of the Dicle University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Patients were divided into five age groups (18-24 years, 25-34 years, 35-44 years, 45-54 years, and ≥ 55 years) and by sex. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of the patients were transferred to the MIMICS software and the MSV was measured. All statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 21) software. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference between the right and left maxillary sinus volume according to the findings obtained from our study, and maxillary sinus volume in males was found to be significantly higher than that of females. Another finding of our study is that the maxillary sinus volume decreases with age increase. Especially it was also found that the sinus volume in males in the 18-24 age group was statistically significantly higher than females. CONCLUSION: Consequently, maxillary sinus volume measurements can be made on CT, CBCT, MRI scans using reconstruction software.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the dimensions of maxillary sinuses in dentate and edentulous patients using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and a customised software program. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study comprised CBCTs of 50 dentate and 50 edentulous posterior maxillae. The observers drew two planar curves in all included sinuses in the frontal, sagittal and axial planes of the respective CBCT scans. The volume (mm3), surface (mm2) and maximum diameter (mm) of the sinuses were calculated using a custom-made software program. The variables analysed were the influence of the state of dentition on sinus dimensions (primary outcome) and the influence of age, gender and side on sinus dimensions; the time needed for analysis; and the intra- and inter-observer agreement (secondary outcomes). RESULTS: There was no difference in sinus dimensions between dentate and edentulous posterior maxillae. Males had significantly (p < 0.05) greater volume, surface and diameter than females. Strong intra- and inter-observer agreement (Pearson correlation) was found for the calculated sinus dimensions. The time needed per analysis was less than 4 min for both observers. CONCLUSIONS: Being edentulous did not have an impact on the sinus dimensions, suggesting that there is no ongoing pneumatisation in the sinus after tooth loss. Males had larger sinuses than females in a population older than 30 years. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Following tooth loss in the posterior maxilla, vertical bone height is primarily lost due to resorption of the alveolar crest, and not due to pneumatisation of the maxillary sinus. The customised software program was found to be user-friendly and efficient.

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to evaluate and compare the maxillary sinus volume (MSV) of patients with a unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) between the cleft side and noncleft side and between adolescent patients with UCLP and a control (noncleft) group using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: CBCT images of 44 UCLP patients (29 males and 15 females, with a mean [SD] age of 13.5 [5.0] years) and 44 (22 males and 22 females, with a mean [SD] age 14.9 [4.2] years) age- and sex-matched controls were evaluated in this study. Each maxillary sinus was assessed 3-dimensionally, segmented, and its volume was calculated. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between the age and gender distributions of the groups. There was a statistically significant difference in the MSVs of the cleft (10996.78±3522.89 mm3) versus the noncleft side (10382.3±3416.2 mm3; P < .05)] but no significant difference between the MSVs of the right and left sides ( P > .05). In the intergroup comparison, the mean MSVs of the UCLP patients (10701.52±3369.33 mm3) were significantly smaller than those of the control group (16054.08 ± 5293.96 mm3; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The MSVs of the UCLP patients showed a statistically significant decrease compared to those of the controls ( P < .001). There was also a significant difference in the MSVs of the cleft and noncleft sides of the UCLP patients ( P < .05).

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare sinus volume and dimensions in patients with high-, low-, and normal-angle vertical growth patterns using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: According to skeletal vertical face growth patterns, 60 adults (31 female, 29 male, average age: 29.90 ± 10.91 years) were divided into three groups equally: high-angle, low-angle, and normal-angle groups. Cephalometric tracings were obtained from CBCT images and SN-GoGn (angle between Sella-Nasion line and Gonion-Gnathion line) cephalometric angular measurements used for the classification of skeletal vertical pattern evaluations. Morphological and dimensional changes in the maxillary sinuses were evaluated on CBCT images. Data were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA, Kruskall-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U statistical tests. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences among the groups in terms of age (p > .05). The low-angle vertical growth pattern group showed significantly better results than the high-angle group in the right maxillary sinus length parameter (p < .05). CONCLUSION: According to the results, the high-angle subjects showed statistically lower values in terms of maxillary sinus length and width than the low-angle subjects. There were no effects of vertical face development on right and left maxillary sinus volumes. The results of this study may be useful in maxillary sinus evaluation when planning for orthognathic surgery and orthodontic mini screw application in various vertical face patterns.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to assess the effects of concha bullosa variation on maxillary sinus volume and uncinate angle. METHOD: The study group included 169 patients (338 sides) who underwent either surgical or medical treatment with the diagnosis of chronic rhinosinusitis. The paranasal sinus computed tomography of these patients was analyzed to measure maxillary sinus volume, uncinate angle and existence of concha bullosa. Subsequently, these variables were evaluated to find out possible relationship inbetween. RESULTS: Mean maxillary sinus volume and uncinate angle at right and left sides were 15.21 ± 0.47 and 15.51 ± 0.48 mm(3), 30.57 ± 0.62° and 30.20 ± 0.68°, respectively. There was no difference between patients with or without concha bullosa in regard to maxillary sinus volume and uncinate angle at both sides. Maxillary sinus volume and degree of uncinate angle did not show any significant correlation at both sides; r = -0.124, p = 0.107 and r = -0.136, p = 0.078. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, concha bullosa is a common anatomical variation at nasal cavity. The existence of concha bullosa does not have any association with the volume of maxillary sinus and angle of uncinate process.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the maxillary sinus ostium 2D area (SOA) and the development of mucosal cysts of the maxillary sinus (MMC). METHODS: Thirty patients (≥ 18 years) with unilateral MMC who underwent paranasal sinus CT (PNsCT) were included in this single-center retrospective study. Non-MMC sinus was used as the control group. Cyst and air volume of the maxillary sinuses, diameter, and 2-dimensional area of the ostium of the patients were calculated in the 3-dimensional volumetric analysis program. Both correlation and linear regression model analyses were performed for the relationship between MMC and SOA. RESULTS: Thirty patients were included (mean age of 42.30 ± 17.62 years). A total of 15/30 (50%) were male. The mean SOA in patients with MMC (8.91 ± 1.10 mm2) was lower than in patients without MMC (12.94 ± 1.35 mm2), which was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The mean sinus ostium diameter in patients with MMC (2.12 ± 0.71 mm) was higher than in patients without MMC (1.91 ± 0.82 mm), which was statistically insignificant (p = 0.295). There was a statistically significant, good level of negative linear correlation between SOA and total cyst volume (TCV) [correlation coefficient (r) = - 0.680, p < 0.001]). As a result, the regression model consisting of "Age, Sinus air volume, and TCV" variables is a good model and has statistically significant relations with SOA. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, small SOAs contribute to the development of MMC. There was a negative correlation between SOA and TCV. In addition, 2D area measurement may be a more accurate method instead of diameter measurement.

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that there would be a correlation between nasal septum deviation (NSD) and a decreased maxillary sinus volume (MSV) in a Colombian population, using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT); other sinusal anatomical structures found during the reading were described and analyzed. A retrospective analysis of 537 CBCT scans of adult patients taken between January 2014 and January 2017 included measuring the maxillary sinus diameter in the vertical, horizontal, and sagittal planes. NSD was quantified and related to MSV using the same field of view (FOV). The volume of the right and left maxillary sinuses showed a median and interquartile range (IQR) of 8.18 mm3 (IQR: 6.2-10.33) and 8.3 mm3 (IQR: 6.4-10.36). Statistically significant differences were observed between sex and right and left MSV (p = 0.000), with higher MSV in men. The presence of NSD was observed in 96.81% of the sample and was evaluated in degrees, observing a median of 11° (IQR: 7-16) where 40% of the sample had moderate angles (9-15°). There was no correlation between NSD and a decreased MSV in the population studied. Detailed CBCT analysis with a large FOV is crucial for the analysis of anatomical structures before performing surgical procedures that involve the MS as a preventive diagnostic and therapeutic step for appropriate treatment.

Background: There is little investigation into the connection between anatomic variations and the development of antrochoanal polyp (ACP), and the etiology of ACP remains unclear. The study aims to explore the relationship among anatomic variations, maxillary sinus volume, nasal meatus-related parameters, and the occurrence of ACP. Methods: There were 127 patients included in this retrospective cross-sectional study with unilateral ACPs hospitalized at Shandong Provincial ENT Hospital between February 2010 and February 2020. Evaluation indicators included anatomic variations, maxillary sinus volume, and nasal meatus-related parameters in 45 children and 82 adults, which were evaluated twice by 3DSlicer software. Parameters were assessed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, followed by paired t-test and Chi-squared test for multiple comparisons. Results: Significant differences were found in the accessory maxillary ostium (AMO) and maxillary sinus retention cyst between two sides (both P<0.001). Maxillary sinus volume and sex had an association of statistical significance on adults' ACP side (P=0.026) and non-antrochoanal polyp (non-ACP) side (P=0.032). The affected side's maxillary sinus volume was significantly larger than the healthy side (P<0.001). The length from the maxillary sinus orifice to the plane of the most lateral margin of the middle turbinate of the ACP side was larger than the non-ACP side in children (P=0.044). Males' length from the maxillary sinus orifice to the plane of the most lateral margin of the middle turbinate of the ACP side was considerably greater than the healthy side (P<0.001). The length from the maxillary sinus orifice to the plane of the most lateral margin of the middle turbinate (P=0.014) and the length from the inferior turbinate to the nasal septum (P=0.013) on the non-ACP side was higher than the affected side in adults. Males' length from the inferior turbinate to the nasal septum was higher on the healthy side than the affected side (P<0.001). Males had a greater maximum length from the maxillary sinus lateral wall to the nasal septum (P=0.024) and the length from the inferior turbinate to the nasal septum (P=0.003) on the non-ACP side than females. Males had a larger maximum length from the maxillary sinus lateral wall to the nasal septum on the ACP side than females (P=0.011). Conclusions: In our study, the occurrence of the AMO, the maxillary sinus's expanded size, and the stenosis of the associated channels around the ostiomeatal complex and common meatus are regarded as probably connected to the formation of ACPs. In addition, the anatomic variations that involve the ostiomeatal complex and may lead to a change in maxillary sinus pressure and nasal ventilation are important factors in the formation of ACPs.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) can provide precise information about complex anatomical structures as it is characterised by rapid volumetric image acquisition with high resolution. The aim of this study was to provide measurements for 20 ancient skulls of the Samnite people found in the necropolis of Opi, a small and isolated mountain village in Abruzzo, a region in central Italy. All the images (left and right) of the 20 ancient skulls from Opi were acquired. All the data are the property of the Department of Innovative Technologies in Medicine and Dentistry of G. D'Annunzio University, Chieti, and different parameters (area and volume) were measured and evaluated. The mean and standard deviation of the facial measurements were also calculated. All the data were subjected to statistical analysis. CBCT scan data of 20 fossil skulls did not show significant values regarding the MS area and the volume between the right and left sides. In the ancient skulls, no difference was found between the right and left sides.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the maxillary sinus volume (MSV), Chronic Sinusitis incidence, and asymmetry of the zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) following ZMC fracture surgery with various numbers of fixation points. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a prospective non-randomized cohort, 50 adults with unilateral ZMC fractures who treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) between November 2019 and October 2021 were assigned to accomplish this study. They distributed into three groups as per fixation points (2, 3, or 4 Points). Preoperative (T1), Immediate postoperative (T2), and follow-up (T3) cone beam computed topography were analyzed using the Mimics software. The main measures were MSV and asymmetry indexes (ASI) of six paired bilateral anatomical landmarks (Orbital, Suprajugal, Jugale, Zygon, Maxillozygion 1, and Maxillozygion 2). RESULTS: MSV decreased significantly on the affected sides postoperatively in 2P and 3P groups, both in T2 and T3. Further, the T2-T3 comparisons showed a significant MSV change (p = 0.001). ASI reduced considerably to clinically tolerated levels (<3 mm) on landmarks near the fixation sites postoperatively. The ASI on the Zygon and Maxillozygion 1 landmarks showed significant changes among the three groups in both T2 and T3. Interestingly, only five cases had reported postoperative sinusitis symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Although the MSV was changed among the different fixation point groups, the incidence of chronic sinusitis was uncommon. Bilateral asymmetry affected by number and position of the fixation points, fixation with 4 points provide more symmetry.

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the maxillary sinus volume (MSV) in both genders in a Saudi sample and among different skeletal patterns. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 52 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 18 years or older individuals with complete dentition and healthy medical history. MSV was measured as the mean value of both sides in cubic millimeters (mm3) using OnDemand three-dimensional™ Dental. Cephalometric tracings were conducted on cephalograms obtained from CBCT scans. The beta, A × B, and Frankfort-mandibular plane angles were selected to determine the sagittal and vertical skeletal patterns of the study subjects. Descriptive statistics and other tests were conducted. The significance level was set at P < 0.05. Results: Fifty-two CBCT scans were included in this study (23 males and 29 females), with a mean age of 36 (±14) years. The mean MSV was 14887 (±5030.79) mm3. Males had statistically significantly larger MSV (16517 ± 5335 mm3) compared with females (13595 ± 4,452 mm3) (P = 0.036). There was no statistically significant difference in MSV among all other cephalometric measurements (P > 0.05). Conclusions: The MSV in the studied Saudi sample was larger among males. However, different skeletal patterns have no statistically significant differences in MSV.

PURPOSE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate anatomical changes in the maxillary sinus after LeFort I osteotomy. METHODS: The study protocol was developed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols, and it was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews under registration number CRD42021236412. RESULTS: Our search strategy yielded 64 articles. Of these, 31 were duplicate studies, and 33 were independently reviewed by two authors for eligibility. Of these 33 studies, 24 were excluded as they did not meet the inclusion criteria. Finally, nine studies met the criteria for inclusion, and they were critically reviewed. CONCLUSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that maxillary sinus volume decreases after one-piece and multisegment osteotomies in both skeletal class II and class III male and female patients, with one-piece LeFort I osteotomy technique showing a greater reduction in the sinus volume than the multisegment osteotomy technique. The maxillary sinus thickness remained constant postoperatively.

We examined the relationship between nasal septal deviation (SD) angle and maxillary sinus volumes by examining the paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNSCT) images in children. In this retrospective study, PNSCT images of 106 children with one-sided nasal SD were included. According to the SD angle, two groups were identified: Group 1 (n = 54): SD angle ≤ 11°, Group 2 (n = 52): SD angle > 11°. There were 23 children between 9 and 14 years and 83 children between 15 and 17 years. Maxillary sinus volume and mucosal thickening were evaluated. In 15- to 17-year age group, maxillary sinus volumes of males were higher than females bilaterally. For each of the males and females, ipsilateral maxillary sinus volume was significantly lower than the contralateral side in all children and in 15- to 17-year age group. In each of the SD angle values (≤11 or >11) separately, ipsilateral maxillary sinus volume was lower; and in the SD angle > 11° group, maxillary sinus mucosal thickening values were higher than those of the contralateral side. In young children in 9- to 14-year age group, bilateral maxillary sinus volumes decreased, in this group maxillary sinus volume was not affected according to the SD. However, in 15- to 17-year age groups, maxillary sinus volume was lower on the ipsilateral SD side; and ipsilateral and contralateral maxillary sinus volumes of the males were significantly higher than those in the females. SD should be treated at an appropriate time to prevent SD-related maxillary sinus volume shrinkage and rhinosinusitis.

Objective: To compare maxillary sinus volumes and surface areas among individuals with Class III skeletal patterns, with different sagittal positions of maxilla and Class I patients with normal jaw positions using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: CBCT images of 168 patients were analyzed retrospectively. The calculated surface areas and sinus volumes of 58 patients with Class I, normal mandibular and maxillary position (0SNA>80, 82>SNB>78) were compared with 61 patients with Class III retrognathic maxillary and normal mandibular positions (MRs) (ANB<0, SNA<80, 82>SNB>78) and 49 patients with Class III normal maxillary and prognathic mandibular positions (MP) (ANB<0, 84>SNA>80, SNB>82). Also, volume differences between genders and sides were investigated. One-way ANOVA and t-test were used to compare age, gender, skeletal patterns, and maxillary sinus measurements. Results: CBCT images of 94 females and 74 males were examined. There was no statistically significant difference in the right and left maxillary sinus volume and surface area measurements among Class I, Class III MR, and Class III MP groups (p>0.05). When the maxillary sinus volume and surface area were evaluated according to gender, the right maxillary sinus surface area and volume of males were found to be statistically significantly higher than those of females (p=0.012 and p=0.024). Similarly, the left maxillary sinus surface areas and volumes of males were also found to be significantly higher than those of females (p=0.000 and p=0.002). Conclusion: Different sagittal positions of the maxilla do not appear to affect maxillary sinus volume, and males tend to have greater maxillary sinus volume than females. CBCT images can be used to calculate intrabony air spaces.

This CT-based study aimed to characterize and explain the existence of two anatomical structures positioned near the maxillary sinuses, which are of clinical relevance in rhinology and maxillofacial surgery. A total of 182 head scans (92 males and 90 females) were inspected for infraorbital ethmoid cells (IECs) and for the type (route) of infraorbital canal (IOC). The maxillary sinuses were segmented, and their volumes were measured. Statistical analysis was conducted to reveal the associations between the two anatomical variations, namely, sex and the maxillary sinus volume. Infraorbital ethmoid cells were noted in 43.9% of the individuals studied; they were more frequent in males (53.3%) than in females (34.4%). The descending infraorbital nerve (type 3 IOC) was found in 13.2% of individuals and was independent of sex. Infraorbital ethmoid cells were associated with the IOC types. The maxillary sinus volume was found to be sex-dependent. A large sinus volume is significantly associated with IOC Type 3 (the descending canal) and the presence of IEC. Dentists, radiologists, and surgeons should be aware that individuals with extensive pneumatization of the maxillary sinuses are more likely to display a descending IOC and IEC. These findings should be studied, along with CT scans, before treatment and surgery.
