BACKGROUND: The global growth of pistachio production has prompted exploration into sustainable agricultural practices, on the application of humic substances such as fulvic acid in enhancing the quality of horticultural crops. The present study was carried out in Qom province, Iran, on 20 years old pistachio (Pistacia vera L. cv. Kaleh-Ghoochi) trees and investigated the impact of foliar spraying of fulvic acid at varying concentrations (1.5, 3, and 4.5 g L- 1) on the antioxidant and quality properties of pistachio. The different concentrations of fulvic acid were applied at two key stages: at the initiation of pistachio kernel formation (late June) and the development stage of pistachio kernel (late August), as well as at both time points. Following harvest at the horticulturally mature phase, various parameters, including total phenols, flavonoids, soluble proteins, soluble carbohydrate content, antioxidant capacity, and antioxidant enzyme activity, were assessed. RESULTS: Results indicated that foliar application of fulvic acid, particularly at 1.5 g L- 1 during both late June and August, effectively increased phenolic compounds (31.8%) and flavonoid content (24.53%). Additionally, this treatment also augmented antioxidant capacity and heightened the activity of catalase (CAT) (37.56%), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) (63.86%), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (76.45%). Conversely, peroxidase (POX) (41.54%) activity was reduced in fulvic acid-treated nuts compared with controls. Moreover, the content of chlorophyll (45%) and carotenoids (46.7%) was enhanced using this organic fertilizer. In terms of mineral elements, the increment was observed in zinc (Zn) (58.23%) and potassium (K) (28.12%) amounts in treated nuts. Additionally, foliar application of fulvic acid led to elevated levels of soluble carbohydrates and proteins in treated nuts. CONCLUSIONS: In the present study, application of fulvic acid resulted in enhancement of antioxidant activity and quality traits of pistachio nut through an increase in total phenol, flavonoids, chlorophyll, carotenoids, K, Zn, and also activity of antioxidant enzymes. Therefore, use of fulvic acid emerges as a promising strategy to enhance the quality and nutritional attributes of pistachios, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices and improved crop outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Terebinth (Pistacia terebinthus) belongs to the same botanical family as pistachio (Pistacia vera) and cashew (Anacardium occidentale). Although it is known that there is cross-sensitivity between pistachio and cashew, the cross-sensitivity of terebinth with pistachio or cashew has not been investigated. The objective of our study was to evaluate the sensitivity to terebinth in children with pistachio sensitivity. METHODS: This study was conducted between September 2021 and June 2022 at Adiyaman University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. It analyzed the results of children who underwent skin prick testing (SPT) for food allergy. Of the 712 food skin prick tests reviewed, 27 children were identified with pistachio sensitivity. Prick tests with commercial extract for cashew and prick-to-prick tests for terebinth were applied to these children. RESULTS: The median age was two, and 78% were male. Of the children with pistachio sensitivity, 96% demonstrated cross-sensitivity to terebinth and 100% to cashew. There was a strong correlation between the size of SPT responses in pistachio, cashew, and terebinth. Only four children had previously consumed terebinth, and two of these children had allergic reactions. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates a high cross-sensitivity between terebinth, pistachio, and cashew. We recommend that individuals with pistachio or cashew allergy/sensitivity avoid terebinth until tests confirm it is safe to consume. Further studies are needed to demonstrate the clinical significance of this cross-sensitivity and identify the major allergen involved.

This study endeavors to develop cost-effective environmentally friendly technology for removing harmful residual pharmaceuticals from water and wastewater by utilizing the effective adsorption of pistachio shell (PS) biochar and the degradation potency of laccase immobilized on the biochar (L@PSAC). The carbonatization and activation of the shells were optimized regarding temperature, time, and NH4NO3/PS ratio. This step yielded an optimum PS biochar (PSAC) with the highest porosity and surface area treated at 700 °C for 3 h using an NH4NO3/PS ratio of 3% wt. The immobilization of laccase onto PSAC (L@PSAC) was at its best level at pH 5, 60 U/g, and 30 °C. The optimum L@PSAC maintained a high level of enzyme activity over two months. Almost a complete removal (>99%) of diclofenac, carbamazepine, and ciprofloxacin in Milli-Q (MQ) water and wastewater was achieved. Adsorption was responsible for >80% of the removal and the rest was facilitated by laccase degradation. L@PSAC maintained effective removal of pharmaceuticals of ≥60% for up to six treatment cycles underscoring the promising application of this material for wastewater treatment. These results indicate that activated carbon derived from the pistachio shell could potentially be utilized as a carrier and adsorbent to efficiently remove pharmaceutical compounds. This enzymatic physical elimination approach has the potential to be used on a large-scale.

Aflatoxins are carcinogens produced by the fungi Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus that contaminate pistachio crops. International markets reject pistachio when aflatoxins exceed permitted maximum levels. Releasing the atoxigenic strain AF36 of A. flavus is the leading aflatoxin pre-harvest control method. The product AF36 Prevail, sorghum grains coated with AF36 propagules, has been used in California since 2017. However, a high percentage of grains of the Prevail fail to sporulate in orchards. Here, the effect of soil moisture on the percentage of AF36 product grains sporulating (SG) and the quantity of spores per grain using a sporulation index (SI) was determined. Under controlled conditions, SG was higher than 85% when soil moisture was 13% or more, and SI increased with increasing soil moisture from 8.4 to 21%. The highest AF36 sporulation occurred near the micro-sprinklers when the grains were not impacted by the irrigation water drops. Arthropod predation was responsible for lost product grains, which was more pronounced in non-tilled soil than in tilled soil. Dispersal of the AF36 spores decreased markedly with the height and distance from the inoculum source, following a pattern of diffusion equations. However, AF36 spores easily reached canopies of pistachios located 10 m from the inoculum source. Our results indicate that AF36 Prevail should be applied close to the irrigation line in the moist soil area but avoiding the areas where excess irrigation causes water accumulation. The biocontrol of aflatoxins in California's pistachio production areas was optimized by improving the field realization of the biological control agent.

Three novel trifluoromethylated compounds were designed and synthesized by reacting trifluoroacetimidoyl chloride derivatives with acetamidine hydrochloride or thiourea in the presence of potassium carbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate as a base. In vitro and in vivo assays demonstrated the efficacy of the tested compounds in controlling root-knot nematode disease on pistachio rootstocks caused by Meloidogyne incognita. Bis-trifluoromethylated derivatives, namely N,N''-thiocarbonylbis(N'-(3,4-dimethylphenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoroacetimidamide) (compound A1), showed high efficacy as novel and promising nematicides, achieving up to 78.28% control at a concentration of 0.042 mg/liter. This effect is attributed to four methyl and two trifluoromethyl groups. In the pre-inoculation application of compound A1, all three concentrations (0.033, 0.037, and 0.042 mg/liter, and Velum) exhibited a higher level of control, with 83.79, 87.46, and 80.73% control, respectively. In the microplot trials, compound A1 effectively reduced population levels of M. incognita and enhanced plant growth at a concentration of 0.037 mg/liter. This suggests that compound A1 has the potential to inhibit hedgehog protein and could be utilized to prevent the progression of root-knot disease. Furthermore, the molecular docking results revealed that compounds A1 and A3 interact with specific amino acid residues (Gln60, Asp530, Glu70, Arg520, and Thr510) located in the active site of hedgehog protein. Based on the experimental findings of this study, compound A1 shows promise as a lead compound for future investigations.

'Active targeting' refers to modifying a nanocarrier's surface with targeting ligands. This study introduced an efficient approach for immobilizing imidazole-based drugs onto the metallated-porphyrin complex within the porphysome nanocarrier. To enhance cellular and bacterial uptake, a Ni-porphyrin with a fatty acid tail was synthesized and placed in the bilayer center of DPPC, facilitating receptor-mediated endocytosis. The Ni-porphyrin in the head group of the Ni-porphyrin-tail was placed superficially in the polar region of the membrane. Spherical unilamellar vesicle formation (DPPC: Ni-porphyrin-tail 4:1 mole ratio), as metallo-porphysome, was achieved through supramolecular self-assembly in an aqueous buffer. These vesicles exhibited a diameter of 279 ± 7 nm and a zeta potential of -15.3 ± 2.5 mV, showcasing their unique cytocompatibility. Nitroimidazole was decorated on the surface of metallo-porphysomes and pistachio green hull extract (PGHE) was loaded into the carrier for synergistic activity against (E. coli) and (S. aureus) bacteria strains. The physicochemical properties of Nitroimidazole-porphysome-PGHE, including size, zeta potential, morphology, loading efficiency, and release profile under various pH and temperature conditions in simulated gastrointestinal fluids were characterized. This combination therapy prevented bacterial cell attachment and biofilm formation in Caco-2 cells, as colon epithelial cells. The remarkable benefit of this system is that it does not affect cell viability even at 0.5 mg/ml. This study demonstrates the potential of a new co-delivery system using biocompatible metallo-porphysomes to decrease bacterial infections.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a potent mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium spp., which contaminates many crops, including pistachios. Pistachios contaminated with OTA may be subjected to border rejections resulting in significant economic losses to the United States agricultural revenues. The current study examined prevalence of OTA in California-grown pistachios and identified its causal agents. OTA was detected in 20% of samples from 2018 to 2021 (n = 809), with 18% of samples exceeding the European Union regulatory limit of 5 µg/kg. Fungi potentially responsible for OTA contamination were isolated from leaves, nuts, and soil collected from 14 pistachio orchards across California. A total of 1,882 isolates of Aspergillus section Nigri and 85 isolates of section Circumdati were recovered. Within section Nigri, 216 (11.5%) isolates were identified as potential OTA producers using a boscalid-resistance assay. Phylogenetic analyses of partial gene sequences for ß-tubulin and calmodulin genes resolved section Circumdati into four species: A. ochraceus (33%), A. melleus (28%), A. bridgeri (21%), and A. westerdijkiae (19%). A. westerdijkiae produced the highest levels of OTA in inoculated pistachios (47 µg/g), followed by A. ochraceus (9.6 µg/g) and A. melleus (3.3 µg/g). A. bridgeri did not produce OTA. OTA production by section Circumdati was optimal from 20 to 30°C. All 216 boscalid-resistant isolates from section Nigri were identified as A. tubingensis, and representative isolates (n = 130) produced 3.8 µg/kg OTA in inoculated pistachios. This is the first detailed report on OTA contamination and causal fungi in California pistachios and will be helpful in devising effective management strategies.

In this study, Cht/PS-CA/HNT biocomposite adsorbent was synthesized using halloysite nanotube as nanomaterial, chitosan which is a biodegradable and biocompatible biopolymer, pistachio shell as biomass source, citric acid as biomass modifier. The removal of methylene blue dyestuff on the synthesized new Cht/PS-CA/HNT from the aqueous medium by adsorption method was investigated. Experimental parameters such as dye concentration, contact time, amount of adsorbent, solution pH and temperature, which affect the adsorption process, were investigated. The adsorption experimental data were analyzed with the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms, which are widely used in aqueous solutions, and it was decided that Langmuir is the most suitable isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of the monolayer was calculated to be 111.14 mg/g. Optimum contact time and adsorbent dose were determined as 90 min and 1 g/L. Adsorption experimental data were applied for Pseudo-first-order and Pseudo-second-order kinetic models and it was decided that the most suitable kinetic model was pseudo-second-order. Thermodynamic evaluation of adsorption showed that adsorption is endothermic and adsorption is spontaneous.


In the present study, it was determined that chitosan beads prepared using citric acid modified pistachio shells and HNT have strong adsorption properties for dyestuff removal, which is one of the important causes of environmental pollution. The novelty of this work is based on the development of a new composite adsorbent that can be synthesized in a simple and fast method and does not require expensive reagents or complex equipment. Another innovation is that MB dyestuff, which has a highly harmful effect, can be easily removed from polluted water by using simple biowaste-based adsorbents by adopting appropriate procedures.

Aspergillus species create major postharvest problems due to the food losses caused by their mere presence and the hazardous mycotoxins they produce, such as aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and ochratoxin A (OTA). These mycotoxins are mainly produced by A. flavus and A. carbonarius, respectively. In this study, we developed a rapid detection method for the two aforementioned species based on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). The primers were designed to target genes belonging to the mycotoxin clusters pks and aflT for A. carbonarius and A. flavus, respectively. Result visualization was carried out in real time via the detection of fluorescent signals. The method developed showed high sensitivity and specificity, with detection limits of 0.3 and 0.03 pg/reaction of purified DNA of A. carbonarius and A. flavus, respectively. The assays were further implemented on inoculated nuts, including pistachios and almonds, after one-step crude DNA extraction. These tests revealed a detection level of 0.5 spore/g that shows the effectiveness of LAMP as a rapid method for detecting potentially toxigenic Aspergillus spp. directly in food. The validation of the assays included tests on a larger scale that further confirmed their sensitivity and specificity, as well as enabling the production of ready-to-use LAMP prototype kits. These kits are easy to use and aim to simplify the screening of food samples in order to monitor the presence of specific Aspergillus contaminations.

Pistachio hull (PH), a rich source of tannin, may interact with nitrogen (N) and affect N metabolism in dairy cows. This investigation aimed to assess the effects of feeding PH and two N sources (soybean meal: SBM or slow-release urea: SRU) on milk production, digestibility, and N metabolism in lactating dairy cows. The study utilized a 4 × 4 Latin square design with 12 Holstein dairy cows (body weight = 611 ± 39 kg; 84 ± 14 days in milk; 45.6 ± 5.3 kg/d milk), with treatments arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial configuration. The main factors were (1) the tannin source [without or with dried PH included at 76.5 g/kg of diet DM] and (2) two N sources [SBM vs. SRU]. Crude protein and total phenolic and tannin contents were greater, but NDF was lower in PH than in sugar beet pulp. Feeding diets containing 7.65% PH resulted in reductions in milk yield, milk urea N, and milk efficiency but milk fat and protein concentration increased. Milk yield was similar between SBM and SRU. Feeding PH in replacement to sugar beet pulp did not interact with N sources, except for feed intake, as the PH + SRU diet tended to decrease feed intake (P = 0.09). Feeding PH was also associated with decreased dry matter, crude protein, and NDF digestibility. Dry matter digestibility decreased when a portion of SBM was replaced by SRU. Feeding PH in replacement to sugar beet pulp lowered ruminal ammonia-N concentration and increased acetate-to-propionate proportion. Feeding PH vs. sugar beet pulp had no effect on N intake and N excretion in urine and milk, but it increased the amount of N excretion in feces and decreased apparent N efficiency (milk N/N intake). Alanine aminotransferase was lower in cows fed SRU only in PH- but not sugar beet pulp-containing diets. Blood creatinine was lower when SRU was included in the PH-containing diet, but the opposite was observed in diets containing sugar beet pulp. Feeding PH instead of sugar beet pulp did not affect blood urea-N but resulted in lower glucose and aspartate aminotransferase concentrations. Overall, cows fed PH in replacement to sugar beet pulp were less efficient in converting feed nutrients into milk production, likely because of its negative effect on nutrient digestion. Partial replacement of SBM with SRU had no influence on lactation productivity and urea-N concentration in milk and blood. This may imply the suitability of SRU in providing a sustained supply of N in the rumen, likely qualifying it as a viable source of N to replace a portion of SBM in dairy diets.

This study aimed to incorporate pistachio shell hemicellulose into a film of gelatin and glycerol for the production of biodegradable films. The gelatin and glycerol are chosen because of their functional properties, which make it extensively used in food industry. The film composition was defined after a statistical optimization by central composite face-centered design and response surface methodology. The hemicellulose/gelatin ratio of 35.93% and the glycerol ratio of 18.02% were the optimum conditions to obtain lower film water solubility, higher tensile strength, and elongation at break values. The physical, structural, mechanical, and barrier properties of the developed hemicellulose-gelatin film were analyzed and compared with those of the gelatin film. Tensile strength and film water solubility values were reduced significantly with hemicellulose incorporation from 20.41 to 16.64 MPa and 49.57 to 39.21%, respectively, while EB was enhanced by 4.34 times. In addition, hemicellulose incorporation enhanced the water vapor permeability and the film degradation in the soil. The films were also examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The novelty of this study is to use pistcahio shell hemicellulose in the production of an edible film for the first time. BACKGROUND: Due to the important economic role of pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) the cultivation of this valuable crop has been extended. Various abiotic stresses harm the growth and performance of pistachio. Seaweed extract containing various substances such as pseudo-hormones that stimulate growth, nutritional elements, and anti-stress substances can cause more resistance to abiotic stresses, and increase the quantity and the quality of the fruit. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of foliar application of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. seaweed extract on some biochemical traits related to abiotic stress in Pistacia vera L. cv. Kaleh-Ghoochi. The first factor of foliar spraying treatment included A. nodosum seaweed extract at four levels (0, 1, 2, and 3 g/L), and the second factor was the time of spraying solution which was done at three times (1- at the beginning of pistachio kernel growth period at the end of June, 2- at the stage of full kernel development at the end of August, and 3- Spraying in both late June and August). RESULTS: The results showed that all investigated traits were significant under the treatment of seaweed extract compared with the control. The seaweed extract concentrations had a significant effect on all traits except soluble carbohydrates, but the time of consumption of seaweed extract on soluble carbohydrates, protein, peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase enzymes was significant, while had no significant effect on the rest of the traits. According to the interaction effect of time and concentration of consumption of seaweed extract, the highest values of the biochemical characters were as follows: total phenol content: 168.30 mg CAE/g DW, flavonoid content: mg CE/g DW, catalase: 12.66 µmol APX min- 1 mg- 1 protein, superoxide dismutase: 231.4 µmol APX min- 1 mg- 1 protein, and ascorbate peroxidase: 39.53 µmol APX min- 1 mg- 1 protein. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of this study, it seems that it is possible to use fertilizers containing A. nodosum seaweed extract with a concentration of 3 g/L in August to increase the tolerance of the pistachio cultivar "Kaleh-Ghoochi" to abiotic stresses.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effects of consuming pistachio nuts on lipid profiles (total cholesterol [TC], low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C], high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C], and triglyceride [TG]). Databases of PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched from inception to June 2019 to identify RCTs documenting the effects of consuming pistachio nuts on blood lipid profiles in adults. Effect sizes were reported as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) using the random-effects models (DerSimonian-Laird method). Twelve eligible RCTs were included. Consumption of pistachio nuts decreased TC (WMD: -7.48 mg/dL; 95% CI, -12.62 to -2.34), LDL-C (WMD: -3.82 mg/dL; 95% CI, -5.49 to -2.16) and TG (WMD: -11.19 mg/dL; 95% CI, -14.21 to -8.17) levels. However, HDL-cholesterol levels (WMD: 2.45 mg/dL; 95% CI, -2.44 to 7.33) did not change following pistachio consumption. Consuming pistachio nuts may improve lipid profiles (TC, LDL-C, TG) in adults and may be protective against cardiometabolic diseases. However, further studies with larger sample sizes are required to confirm these results.

To evaluate the effects of pistachio consumption on the glucoregulatory status in individuals with a high risk of CVD, a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCT) were conducted. Online databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were searched from inception until June 2019. Human trials that reported data for fasting blood sugar (FBS), fasting insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were included. Data were pooled using the random effect models and expressed as weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95 % CI. Eight RCTs were included in the analyses. Pistachio consumption, exchanged isocalorically for other foods, decreased FBS (WMD: -5·32 mg/dl, 95 % CI (-7·80, -2·64), P < 0·001) and insulin (WMD: -1·86 µIU/ml, 95 % CI (-3·13, -0·59), P < 0·01) concentrations in individuals with a high risk of CVD. However, no changes were observed in the levels of HOMA-IR between the groups (WMD: -0·66, 95 % CI (-1·89, 0·58), P = 0·30). Pistachio consumption may improve glucoregulatory status in individuals at risk for CVD, as evidenced by reduced FBS and insulin concentrations. However, due to the limited availability of studies with diabetic cases and relatively small sample sizes of available studies, well-designed trials with adequate sample sizes aimed at diabetic populations are recommended.

BACKGROUND: The essential oil of pistacia vera (cv. Ohadi) hull (PHEO) was checked using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. It was studied the genes of the wnt pathway with a certain concentration of PHEO on Human gastric cancer (AGS), human hepatocellular carcinoma (PLC/PRF/5), and human colon cancer (CACO2) cell lines. METHODS AND RESULTS: After evaluating the survival rate of cancer cells by MTT test and determining IC50, pistachio hull essential oil (PHEO) was used for 24-hours to treat the cells. After RNA extraction, the expression of wnt pathway genes was evaluated by Real-Time PCR. Considering the crucial role of ß-catenin accumulation and its effect on the progression of gastrointestinal cancers, Western blot analysis was also used to determine the effect of PHEO in protein expression of ß-catenin inhibition. Also, an in silico analysis was carried out to investigate the effect of PHEO extracted compounds on protein expression of ß-catenin and FZD7 inhibition. According to the results, wnt pathway genes were changed in samples treated using PHEO. The results showed the up-regulation of GSK-3ß and down-regulation of Wnt-1, LEF-1, TCF1, and CTNNB1 genes compared to the control. CONCLUSION: We showed inhibition of ß-catenin protein in cancer cell lines. Four compounds of PHEO were suggested to have an inhibition effect on ß-catenin and FZD7. These compounds can be useful in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. Altogether, the inhibitory role of ß-catenin protein can be very effective and can be considered one of the therapeutic goals in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers.

Aflatoxins are carcinogens mainly produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus in susceptible crops, including pistachio. The primary inoculum sources of these pathogens are plant debris in the orchard soils. In Californian fields, one approach to controlling aflatoxin contamination is based on releasing the atoxigenic strain of A. flavus AF36 in inoculated (coated) sorghum grains (AF36 Prevail). However, this control method can fail due to poor sporulation of the AF36 strain or sorghum grain losses due to predation. In 2008 and 2018, we showed that toxigenic and atoxigenic isolates of Aspergillus spp. frequently colonized fallen inflorescences of male pistachio trees. Under controlled conditions, strain AF36 profusely colonized pistachio male inflorescences when humidity was higher than 90%. However, there were significant differences between types of inflorescence (aerial > fallen). In 2016, we considerably (P = 0.015) increased the population of AF36 on the canopies of trees when fallen inflorescences were inoculated with AF36, compared with untreated trees. In 2017 and 2018, these differences were not detected (P > 0.05) due to cross-contamination of strain AF36 between seasons and neighboring plots. In any case, the density of AF36 spores on the canopy of the inflorescence-treated trees was similar (P > 0.05) to that on trees treated with the commercial product. Here, we present a new method for applying strain AF36 based on using a natural, abundant, and uniformly distributed substrate in pistachio fields, and we discuss how it can be improved. Furthermore, our results indicate that, in pistachio orchards where biocontrol practices are not conducted, eliminating this important source of toxigenic Aspergillus inoculum is recommended.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and colonic fermentation on the polyphenol compounds from different varieties of pistachio by UHPLC-HRMS analysis. The total polyphenol content decreased significantly, mostly during oral (recoveries of 27 to 50%) and gastric digestion (recoveries of 10 to 18%), with no significant changes after the intestinal phase. After in vitro digestion, the hydroxybenzoic acids and the flavan-3-ols were the main compounds found in pistachio, with respective total polyphenol contents of 73 to 78% and 6 to 11%. More specifically, the main compounds determined after in vitro digestion were 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic hexoside and epigallocatechin gallate. The colonic fermentation affected the total phenolic content of the six varieties studied, with a recovery range of 11 to 25% after 24 h of fecal incubation. A total of twelve catabolites were identified after fecal fermentation, the main compounds being the 3-(3'-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic, 3-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic, 3-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)propanoic, 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acids and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-É£-valerolactone. Based on these data, a catabolic pathway for colonic microbial degradation of phenolic compounds is proposed. The catabolites identified at the end of the process are potentially responsible for the health properties attributed to pistachio consumption.

The use of by-products from the agri-food industry is a promising approach for production of value-added, polyphenol-rich dietary supplements or natural pharmaceutical preparations. During pistachio nut processing, a great amount of husk is removed, leaving large biomass for potential re-use. The present study compares antiglycative, antioxidant, and antifungal activities as well as nutritional values of 12 genotypes belonging to four pistachio cultivars. Antioxidant activity was measured using DPPH and ABTS assays. Antiglycative activity was evaluated as inhibition of advanced glycation end product (AGE) formation in the bovine serum albumin/methylglyoxal model. HPLC analysis was performed to determine the major phenolic compounds. Cyanidin-3-O-galactoside (120.81-181.94 mg/100 g DW), gallic acid (27.89-45.25), catechin (7.2-11.01), and eriodictyol-7-O-glucoside (7.23-16.02) were the major components. Among genotypes, the highest total flavonol content (14.8 mg quercetin equivalents/g DW) and total phenolic content (262 mg tannic acid equivalent/g DW) were in KAL1 (Kaleghouchi) and FAN2 (Fandoghi), respectively. The highest antioxidant (EC50 = 375 µg/mL) and anti-glycative activities were obtained for Fan1. Furthermore, potent inhibitory activity against Candida species was recorded with MIC values of 3.12-12.5 µg/mL. The oil content ranged from 5.4% in Fan2 to 7.6% in Akb1. The nutritional parameters of the tested cultivars were highly variable: crude protein (9.8-15.8%), ADF (acid detergent fiber 11.9-18.2%), NDF (neutral detergent fiber, 14.8-25.6%), and condensed tannins (1.74-2.86%). Finally, cyanidin-3-O-galactoside was considered an effective compound responsible for antioxidant and anti-glycative activities.

This study reports the valorization of pistachio shell agricultural waste, aiming to develop an eco-friendly and cost-effective biosorbent for cationic brilliant green (BG) dye adsorption from aqueous media. Pistachio shells were mercerized in an alkaline environment, resulting in the treated adsorbent (PSNaOH). The morphological and structural features of the adsorbent were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and polarized light microscopy. The pseudo-first-order (PFO) kinetic model best described the adsorption kinetics of the BG cationic dye onto PSNaOH biosorbents. In turn, the equilibrium data were best fitted to the Sips isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity decreased with temperature (from 52.42 mg/g at 300 K to 46.42 mg/g at 330 K). The isotherm parameters indicated improved affinity between the biosorbent surface and BG molecules at lower temperatures (300 K). The thermodynamic parameters estimated on the basis of the two approaches indicated a spontaneous (ΔG < 0) and exothermic (ΔH < 0) adsorption process. The design of experiments (DoE) and the response surface methodology (RSM) were employed to establish optimal conditions (sorbent dose (SD) = 4.0 g/L and initial concentration (C0) = 10.1 mg/L), yielding removal efficiency of 98.78%. Molecular docking simulations were performed to disclose the intermolecular interactions between the BG dye and lignocellulose-based adsorbent.

In this study, pectin was extracted from the pistachio hull using two methods: conventional extraction and ultrasound-assisted extraction. Water and citric acid solution were tested separately as extraction solvents in both conventional and ultrasound methods. The highest yield (32.3 ± 1.44%) was obtained using a citric acid solution in the conventional extraction method. The pectin extracted with this method had 38.94 g acid per 100 g dry pectin extract. The galacturonic acid and ash contents were 65.81 ± 1.51 and 1.57 ± 0.03%, respectively. The pistachio hull pectin was under the low methoxy pectin group with a 19.29 ± 0.41% degree of esterification. The emulsifying property of the pectin extracted was investigated in an oil-in-water emulsion system at six different pectin concentrations (2, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10% w/w) and at a fixed oil ratio (20% w/w). Emulsion performance was investigated in terms of emulsion stability, microstructural characteristics, droplet size, and rheological properties. The most stable emulsion was obtained at a 6% pectin concentration. The emulsifying activity index, emulsion stability index, droplet size, consistency index, and flow behavior index were 172.85 ± 0.59 m2/g, 158.28 ± 3.41 min, 6.08 ± 0.04 µm, 0.72 ± 0.001 Pa·sn, and 0.752 ± 0.005 at this concentration, respectively.
