RESUMO

Determination of tipping points in nitrogen (N) isotope (δ15N) natural abundance, especially soil δ15N, with increasing aridity, is critical for estimating N-cycling dynamics and N limitation in terrestrial ecosystems. However, whether there are linear or nonlinear responses of soil δ15N to increases in aridity and if these responses correspond well with soil N cycling remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigated soil δ15N and soil N-cycling characteristics in both topsoil and subsoil layers along a drought gradient across a 3000-km transect of drylands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. We found that the effect of increasing aridity on soil δ15N values shifted from negative to positive with thresholds at aridity index (AI) = 0.27 and 0.29 for the topsoil and subsoil, respectively, although soil N pools and N transformation rates linearly decreased with increasing aridity in both soil layers. Furthermore, we identified markedly different correlations between soil δ15N and soil N-cycling traits above and below the AI thresholds (0.27 and 0.29 for topsoil and subsoil, respectively). Specifically, in wetter regions, soil δ15N positively correlated with most soil N-cycling traits, suggesting that high soil δ15N may result from the "openness" of soil N cycling. Conversely, in drier regions, soil δ15N showed insignificant relationships with soil N-cycling traits and correlated well with factors, such as soil-available phosphorus and foliage δ15N, demonstrating that pathways other than typical soil N cycling may dominate soil δ15N under drier conditions. Overall, these results highlight that different ecosystem N-cycling processes may drive soil δ15N along the aridity gradient, broadening our understanding of N cycling as indicated by soil δ15N under changing drought regimes. The aridity threshold of soil δ15N should be considered in terrestrial N-cycling models when incorporating 15N isotope signals to predict N cycling and availability under climatic dryness.

RESUMO

To investigate the impact of emission controls on ammonia (NH3) pollution in urban atmosphere, observation on NH3 (1 hr interval) was performed in Shanghai before, during and after the 2019 China International Import Expo (CIIE) event, along with measurements on inorganic ions, organic tracers and stable nitrogen isotope compositions of ammonium in PM2.5. NH3 during the CIIE period was 6.5±1.0 µg/m3, which is 41% and 32% lower than that before and after the event, respectively. Such a decrease was largely ascribed to the emission controls in nonagricultural sources, of which contribution for measured NH3 in control phase abated by ∼20% compared to that during uncontrol period. Molecular compositions of PAHs and hopanes further suggested a dominant role of the reduced vehicle emissions in the urban NH3 abatement during the CIIE period. Our results revealed that vehicle exhaust emission control is an effective way to mitigate NH3 pollution and improve air quality in Chinese urban areas.

RESUMO

Poplars have evolved various strategies to optimize acclimation responses to environmental conditions. However, how poplars balance growth and nitrogen deficiency remains to be elucidated. In the present study, changes in root development, carbon and nitrogen physiology, and the transcript abundance of associated genes were investigated in slow-growing Populus simonii (Ps) and fast-growing Populus euramericana (Pe) saplings treated with low, medium, and high nitrogen supply. The slow-growing Ps showed a flourishing system, higher δ15N, accelerated C export, lower N uptake and assimilation, and less sensitive transcriptional regulation in response to low N supply. The slow-growing Ps also had greater resistance to N deficiency due to the transport of photosynthate to the roots and the stimulation of root development, which allows survival. To support its rapid metabolism and growth, compared with the slow-growing Ps, the fast-growing Pe showed greater root development, C/N uptake and assimilation capacity, and more responsive transcriptional regulation with greater N supply. These data suggest that poplars can differentially manage C/N metabolism and photosynthate allocation under different N supply conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rodents of the genus Rattus are among the most pervasive and successful invasive species, causing major vicissitudes in native ecological communities. A broad and flexible generalist diet has been suggested as key to the invasion success of Rattus spp. Here, we use an indirect approach to better understand foraging niche width, plasticity, and overlap within and between introduced Rattus spp. in anthropogenic habitats and natural humid forests of Madagascar. RESULTS: Based on stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values measured in hair samples of 589 individual rodents, we found that Rattus rattus had an extremely wide foraging niche, encompassing the isotopic space covered by a complete endemic forest-dwelling Malagasy small mammal community. Comparisons of Bayesian standard ellipses, as well as (multivariate) mixed-modeling analyses, revealed that the stable isotope niche of R. rattus tended to change seasonally and differed between natural forests and anthropogenic habitats, indicating plasticity in feeding niches. In co-occurrence, R. rattus and Rattus norvegicus partitioned feeding niches. Isotopic mismatch of signatures of individual R. rattus and the habitat in which they were captured, indicate frequent dispersal movements for this species between natural forest and anthropogenic habitats. CONCLUSIONS: Since R. rattus are known to transmit a number of zoonoses, potentially affecting communities of endemic small mammals, as well as humans, these movements presumably increase transmission potential. Our results suggest that due to their generalist diet and potential movement between natural forest and anthropogenic habitats, Rattus spp. might affect native forest-dependent Malagasy rodents as competitors, predators, and disease vectors. The combination of these effects helps explain the invasion success of Rattus spp. and the detrimental effects of this genus on the endemic Malagasy rodent fauna.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationship between the Tiwanaku polity and the individuals buried at the Middle Horizon (∼AD500-1000) cemetery of Larache in northern Chile, a site that has been singled out as a potential elite foreign enclave. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We explore this association through the skeletal remains of 48 individuals interred at the cemetery of Larache using bioarchaeological, biogeochemical, and artifactual evidence. Data from cranial modification practices, violent injury, and the mortuary assemblage are used to explore culturally constructed elements of status and identity, radiogenic strontium isotope analyses provide us with a perspective on the geographic origins of these individuals, and stable carbon and nitrogen analyses allow discussion of paleodiet and access to resources. RESULTS: Radiogenic strontium isotope values show the presence of multiple first generation migrants at Larache. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data reveal significant differences among individuals. The mortuary context reveals a standard pattern for the oases but also includes a series of unusual burials with abundant gold and few other objects. Interestingly, both local and nonlocal individuals with different head shapes had access to the differentiated burial context; however nonlocal individuals appear to be the only ones with a heavily maize-based diet. CONCLUSIONS: Our evidence shows that Larache served as a burial place for a diverse, yet culturally integrated and potentially elite segment of the Atacameño population, but not a foreign enclave as had been postulated.

RESUMO

The elemental composition and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of sedimentary organic matter (OM) are vital geochemical tools for understanding environments, physical and biogeochemical processes, and even paleoclimatic conditions on Earth. Given that the Antarctic Peninsula region is one of the few areas that remain relatively preserved compared to many other regions on Earth, sensitive to climate change, and yet remains the least explored continent, this study aimed to characterise the elemental (total organic carbon and total nitrogen) and isotopic (δ13C and δ15N) composition of marine sediments from various regions of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica. This was done to assess potential sources of OM. The sampling included: (i) 17 surface sediment samples collected across the bay in January 2020; (ii) surface sediment samples collected during the 2009-2019 period at three specific inlets of Admiralty Bay; and (iii) three sediment cores collected from each inlet in 2007-2008. TOC and TN varied from 0.09 to 0.99 % and 0.02 to 0.18 %, respectively. The δ13C values ranged from -25.9 to -18.4 ‰, while the δ15N values varied from -12.4 to 22.7 ‰. The C/N ratio values were from 2.5 to 19.3. OM in sediments from Ezcurra Inlet primarily originates from terrestrial plants prevalent in Antarctica, such as mosses and lichens, alongside aquatic plants like algae and phyto- and zooplankton. Similarly, Mackelar Inlet is characterised by substantial contributions from these abovementioned sources. In contrast, Martel Inlet exhibits diverse sources, predominantly influenced by various marine mammals and seabirds and their excrements, in addition to the signals from mosses and lichens. Recent sediments sampled post-2008 in Martel Inlet show a decreased contribution from animal sources, with mosses and lichens emerging as the predominant contributors, corroborating patterns observed in the other inlets. Our findings suggest that climate change is expanding ice-free areas, promoting the growth of terrestrial vegetation, and altering the composition of sedimentary OM in Admiralty Bay, indicating changes over the studied time scale.

RESUMO

Anthropogenic reactive nitrogen (N) deposition has increased significantly since the industrial revolution. Northern China has become a global hotspot for N deposition. However, few studies have been conducted to quantify the historical changes of atmospheric N deposition fluxes and source contributions in Northern China. By investigating N contents and δ15N values of mosses at Mount Tai (Northern China) in 1984 and 2021, we reconstructed fluxes and source contributions of wet inorganic N deposition and evaluated their historical changes. Compared with 1984, moss N contents (from 1.7 ± 0.3% to 2.1 ± 0.4%) showed a significant increase in 2021, which was mainly attributed to a significant increase in nitrate N deposition fluxes at Mount Tai. Moss δ15N values (from -5.9 ± 0.9‰ to -5.2 ± 2.4‰) showed a slight increase from 1984 to 2021 at Mount Tai. The importance of combustion-related NH3 (including vehicle exhaust, coal combustion, and biomass burning) in 2021 (51.2%) were higher than those in 1984 (43.9%), while the importance of volatilization NH3 sources (including waste and fertilizers) in 2021 (48.8%) were lower than those in 1984 (56.1%). It was fossil-fuel NOx (from vehicle exhaust and coal combustion) (54.1%) rather than non-fossil fuel NOx (from biomass burning and microbial N cycles) (45.9%) dominated NOx emissions in both 1984 and 2021. Our results revealed significant contributions of combustion-related NH3 and fossil-fuel NOx sources emissions to the elevation of N deposition at Mount Tai in Northern China, which are beneficial for mitigating N emissions and conducting ecological benefit assessments in Northern China.

RESUMO

The spatial-temporal distributions of various nitrogen (N) species in surface sediments were examined in a typical subtropical mariculture bay (Maowei Sea) in the northern Beibu Gulf to assess the impact of intensive oyster culture activities on sedimentary N speciation. The results indicated that the mean contents of total nitrogen (TN), extractable (labile) nitrogen (LN) and residual nitrogen (RN) in the surface sediments were 33.3 ± 15.5 µmol g-1, 13.8 ± 1.3 µmol g-1 and 19.5 ± 15.0 µmol g-1, respectively, which lacked significant seasonal variability (P > 0.05). Four forms of LN, namely ion extractable form (IEF-N), weak acid extractable form (WAEF-N), strong alkali extractable form (SAEF-N) and strong oxidant extractable form (SOEF-N) were identified based on sequential extraction. SOEF-N was the dominant form of LN, accounting for 67.8 ± 2.5 % and 63.7 ± 5.9 % in summer and winter, respectively. Spatially, the contents of sedimentary TN, LN, RN, WAEF-N and SOEF-N in intensive mariculture areas (IMA) were significantly higher than those in non-intensive mariculture areas (NIMA) during summer (P < 0.05). Stable nitrogen isotope (δ15N) mixing model revealed that shellfish biodeposition was the predominant source of sedimentary TN in IMA with a contribution of 67.8 ± 23.0 %, approximately 5.4 times that of NIMA (12.6 ± 3.3 %). Significant positive correlations (P < 0.05) were observed between most forms of N species (WAEF-N, SOEF-N, LN and RN) and shellfish-biodeposited N in the surface sediments during summer, indicating that intensive oyster farming greatly enhanced sedimentary TN accumulation.

RESUMO

The mercury pollution status in the northwestern Sea of Okhotsk remains largely unexplored. In this study, hair samples were collected from 40 bearded seals harvested between August and October 2021 in the region. Total mercury (THg) concentrations in the samples exhibited a wide range from 137 to 1885 ng/g (median: 407 ng/g). While no significant differences in THg concentrations were found between male and female seals, distinctions were observed between young and potentially mature seals. Stable nitrogen isotope analysis indicated that juveniles and mature adults did not differ, although sample sizes were limiting. The higher THg concentrations in juveniles were attributed to variations in the seals' diets and/or variations in foraging locations during the juvenile stage which likely contribute to THg differences due to greater seasonal migration to offshore habitats. Notably, THg levels in bearded seals from the northwestern Sea of Okhotsk were lower in comparison to other pinniped species in the North Pacific. These findings, representing the first dataset for this pinniped species in the Russian segment of its habitat, contribute insights into mercury exposure in the Sea of Okhotsk mammalian population.

RESUMO

A portion of carbon produced from shellfish and kelp cultivation is buried in sedimentary environment, and mariculture carbon sequestration potential is an important part of marine carbon sink and has attracted worldwide attention. Total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and their stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N), as well as the mass distribution of these size-fractionated particles were determined in order to study the distribution and sources of TOC in Sanggou Bay. Results showed that sediment organic matter has complex sources from kelp (30.4 %), marine phytoplankton (25.6 %), shellfish (23.7 %), terrestrial input (20.3 %), and mariculture activities of shellfish and kelp was the major component in surface sediment. Approximately 44-69 % of TOC was associated with the 16-32 µm fraction. Low δ13C (-22.1 to -15.1‰) and high δ15N (5.0-5.7‰) were observed in fine particles (<16 µm), indicating relatively high contribution of marine phytoplankton and mariculture derived organic carbon. On the contrary, relatively higher δ13C (-20.2 to -9.2‰) and lower values δ15N (-4.7 to 5.2‰) in coarse particles (>32 µm) suggested that sedimentary organic carbon might be influenced by some additional sources from terrestrial input or seaweed. The mass distribution, δ13C and δ15N of size-fractionated particles in sediments indicated that sediment was obviously redistributed under the condition of mariculture, and further suggested that mariculture derived organic matter have modified the distribution and sources of sedimentary organic matter. This study provided great insight into distribution and source of sedimentary organic carbon from the perspective of size-fractionated particles in mariculture area.

RESUMO

The concentration of nitrogenous aerosols is influenced by air mass transition, local meteorological conditions, local emissions, and the wet removal effect driven by precipitation. Deposited nitrogenous aerosols influence nitrogen availability in the canopy, affecting the amount of plant carbon sequestration. However, the factors controlling nitrogenous aerosol concentrations and their implications for plant carbon sequestration remain unclear. In this study, multiple stable nitrogen isotopes in atmospheric aerosols (δ15N-TN, δ15N-NO3-, and δ15N-NH4+) and rainwater (rainwater δ15N-NO3- and rainwater δ15N-NH4+) in one-year observations were analyzed to explore the main factors controlling nitrogenous aerosol concentrations. The results showed that NO3- and NH4+ were the major components of TN, and their concentrations in seasonal patterns were sensitive to frequent rainfall rather than local emissions or external contributions. The concentrations of nitrogenous aerosols were negatively correlated with precipitation frequency, indicating that increased precipitation frequency induced low concentrations of nitrogenous aerosols. Moreover, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis showed that coarse mode NO3- was generated in the wet season but not in the dry season, reflecting the removal of precipitation. With the increased precipitation frequency from May to July, 42.4% of aerosol NO3- was scavenged into rainwater, indicated by the variations in the δ15N values of nitrogenous aerosols and rainwater. This result prompted us to calculate the loss of 12.1 ± 3.9 Gg carbon/yr plant carbon sequestration. Our study suggests that nitrogenous aerosols are captured by the high precipitation frequency in tropical areas, decreasing nitrogen availability in the canopy, which might decrease plant carbon sequestration.

RESUMO

Nowadays, the emission source and formation mechanism of fine particulate nitrate (pNO3-) in China are mired in controversy. In this study, the stable nitrogen isotope (δ15N-NO3-) and triple oxygen isotope (Δ17O-NO3-) were determined for the pNO3- samples collected at three heights under different atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) (Ox = O3 + NO2: 107 ± 29 µg m-3 at ground, 102 ± 28 µg m-3 at 118 m, 122 ± 23 µg m-3 at 488 m) conditions during the sampling period based on the Canton Tower, Guangzhou, China. The Bayesian mixing model showed that coal combustion was the largest contributor to pNO3- in this city, followed by biomass burning, vehicle exhaust, and soil emission. Interestingly, we found that vertical NOx and pNO3- concentrations displayed an opposite pattern owing to the different formation mechanisms among heights. The average contributions of oxidation pathways for (NO2 + OH, P1), (NO3 + DMS/HC, P2), and (N2O5 + H2O, P3) were 61 %, 12 %, and 27 % at the ground, respectively, and these values would vary greatly among heights. These results implied that both AOC and NOx loading played an important role in pNO3- production. The pNO3- displayed a positive correlation with NOx (r = 0.95) with an enhanced contribution of the P1 pathway under the relatively high AOC condition. However, pNO3- has a negative correlation with NOx (r = -0.99) with a rise of heterogeneous reaction (P2 and P3) under the relatively low AOC condition. Therefore, the current emission control strategy for air pollution in China needs to consider the AOC conditions among regions to effectively mitigate particulate air pollution.

RESUMO

Ammonia (NH3) is the most prevalent alkaline gas in the atmosphere and plays a critical role in air pollution and public health. However, scientific debate remains over whether agricultural emissions (e.g., livestock and fertilizer application) dominate NH3 in urban atmosphere in China, which is one of the largest NH3 emitters in the world. In this study, we first simultaneously collected the fine atmospheric particles (PM2.5) at two heights (ground and 488 m) using the atmospheric observatories in Canton Tower, Guangzhou city, China for the measurements of stable nitrogen isotope composition in ammonium (δ15N-NH4+). Our results showed that the average δ15N-NH4+ value at the ground and the 488 m observatory were 16.9 ‰ and 3.8 ‰, respectively, implying that NH4+ aerosols between the two heights probably have different sources. Moreover, we found that the δ15N-NH4+ value would sharply decrease to -16.7 ‰ when the air masses came from western Guangzhou, where the urbanization is limited compared to other surrounding areas. The Bayesian mixing model indicated that NH4+ aerosol at the ground observatory was mainly derived from non-agricultural activities (76 %, e.g., vehicular exhaust), with the rest from agricultural sources (24 %). As for the 488 m observatory, the contribution of non-agricultural sources was 53 %, which is lower than the ground observatory. This is expected as the lower air receives more impacts from the local urban emission. However, the current "bottom-up" emission inventory illustrates that only ~20 % NH3 in Guangzhou is associated with non-agricultural emissions, which is significantly lower than our δ15N-based results. Overall, our findings strongly imply that non-agricultural sources dominate the urban NH3 in Guangzhou or maybe in adjacent cities of the Pearl River Delta region as well, suggesting that the emission inventory of NH3 in this region probably is urgently needed to be revisited in future studies.

RESUMO

Ammonia (NH3) is taken up by fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and there are concerns about its impact on the environment and health. The source of NH3, which was thought to be of agricultural sources, has recently been suspected to be non-agricultural sources in urban areas. Here, we collected PM2.5 during the monsoon season in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the most polluted city in the world, and analyzed the δ15N-NH4+ in PM2.5. As the result, the δ15N-NH4+ ranged from 9.2 ‰ to 34.4 ‰ (average: 20.7 ± 4.8 ‰), the highest of any of the averaged values annual reported in previous researches. In order to perform source analysis, the NH3 concentrations were estimated using the thermodynamic model ISORROPIA-II. The estimated concentration of NH3 gas averaged 40.8 µg/m3 (3.0-154.6 µg/m3). The contributions calculated with the mixing model to the δ15N-NH4+ values in PM2.5 in Dhaka, Bangladesh averaged 25.3 ± 14 %, 22.8 ± 10 %, 26.5 ± 15 %, and 25.4 ± 10 % for waste, fertilizer, NH3 slip, and fossil fuel combustion, respectively. Non-agricultural sources (NH3 slip, and fossil fuel combustion) accounted for almost half (51.9 %) of the contributions. In addition, the several validation tests of the isotope mixing model were also performed. For validating the uncorrected and corrected source data for δ15N-NH3, the contribution of non-agricultural sources with uncorrected source data would have been very high (>80 %), much higher than the corrected source data.

RESUMO

The elevation of nitrogen (N) deposition by urbanization profoundly impacts the structure and function of surrounding forest ecosystems. Plants are major biomass sinks of external N inputs into forests. Yet, the N-use strategies of forest plants in many areas remain unconstrained in city areas, so their responses and adapting mechanisms to the elevated N deposition are open questions. Here we investigated concentrations and N isotope (δ15N) of total N (TN) and nitrate (NO3-) in leaves and roots of four plant species in subtropical shrubberies and pine forests under N deposition levels of 13 kg-N ha-1 yr-1 and 29 kg-N ha-1 yr-1 at the Guiyang area of southwestern China, respectively. The δ15N differences between plant NO3- and soil NO3- revealed a meager NO3- reduction in leaves but a preferentially high NO3- reduction in roots. δ15N mass-balance analyses between plant TN and soil dissolved N suggested that soil NO3- contributed more than reduced N, and dissolved organic N contributed comparably with ammonium to plant TN, and the study plants preferred NO3- over reduced N. The elevation of N deposition induced root but not leaf NO3- reduction and enhanced the contribution of soil NO3- to plant TN, but plant NO3- preference decreased due to much higher magnitudes of soil NO3- enrichment than plant NO3- utilization. We conclude that plants in subtropical forests of southwestern China preferred NO3- over reduced N, and NO3- was reduced more in roots than in leaves, anthropogenic N pollution enhanced soil NO3- enrichment and plant NO3- utilization but reduced plant NO3- preference.

RESUMO

Tropospheric ozone (O3) enrichment caused by human activities can reduce important crop yields with huge economic loss and affect the global carbon cycle and climate change in the coming decades. In this study, two Italian cultivars of durum wheat (Claudio and Mongibello) were exposed to O3 (80 ppb, 5 h day-1 for 70 consecutive days), with the aim to investigate the changes in yield and biomass, ecophysiological traits, and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values in plants, and to compare the stable isotope responses under environmental stressors. Both cultivars showed a relative O3 tolerance in terms of photosynthetic performance, but in cultivar Mongibello, O3 was detrimental to the grain yield and plant biomass. The δ13C values in the leaves of plants identified that the impact of O3 on CO2 fixation by RuBisCO was dominant. The δ15N value showed significant differences between treatments in both cultivars at seven days from the beginning of the exposure, which could be considered an early indicator of ozone pollution. Under increasingly frequent extreme climates globally, the relationships among stable isotope data, ecophysiological traits, and agronomic parameters could help breed future cultivars.

RESUMO

Atmospheric ambient gaseous ammonia (NH3), the most abundant alkaline gas, affects public health and climate change through its key role in the formation of secondary aerosols via reactions with acidic gases. Estimation of the contributions of ammonia sources is very challenging in the urban atmosphere. Stable nitrogen isotope ratio (δ15N) measurements have shown that urban aerosol NH4+ and gaseous NH3 are derived from fossil fuel combustion-related (FF) sources, such as coal combustion, NH3 slip, and vehicle exhaust, and volatilization-related sources, such as agriculture and urban water volatilization. Biomass burning (BB) sources, especially residential biofuel, can produce vast quantities of NH3 and other pollutants and may greatly influence air quality and contribute to increased urban NH3 emissions. In the present study, we continually collected PM2.5 samples at three urban sites in Central China during autumn and analyzed the major water-soluble ions and δ15N values of aerosol NH4+. The concentrations of NH4+ increased as the temperature decreased close to winter, whereas the δ15N values did not show this pattern. According to the Bayesian model after isotope fractionation correction, FF sources contributed to 56.4 ± 17.1%, 46.4 ± 18.2%, and 51.8 ± 14.9% of aerosol NH4+ in Nanchang, Wuhan, and Changsha, respectively, throughout autumn. The contributions from BB sources were 34.5 ± 20.4%, 46.4 ± 21.4%, and 40.4 ± 17.4% for Nanchang, Wuhan, and Changsha, respectively. We also found the fraction of aerosol NH4+ from BB increased in all three cities from September to November 2017, which was likely caused by increased heating demands with the decrease in temperature during the season. Furthermore, BB was responsible for a severe haze event (maximum PM2.5 of 205.69 µg/m3) in Nanchang. These findings suggest government controls to improve air quality should include BB sources in addition to FF sources.

RESUMO

Nitrogen deposition in lake sediment is an important factor reflecting the evolution of lake environments. Over the past 150-200 years, lakes in China have been affected by natural factors and anthropogenic factors, and nitrogen deposition has increased. As a result, it is critical to reconstruct the spatiotemporal variation trend of nitrogen deposition and analyse the nitrogen source and driving factors. On a regional scale, based on the sediment TN, δ15N and C: N ratio variation trends, this study analysed the buried nitrogen variation trend in Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau lakes over the past 150-200 years. The effects of lake morphology on nitrogen deposition were also analysed by using natural lake parameters. At the watershed scale, the δ15N isotope in the sediment was used to distinguish the sediment sources. On this basis, this study analysed the relationship between nitrogen deposition in nine lakes and the socioeconomic conditions during 1949-2010. The results show that (1) during the last 150-200 years, the TN, δ15N and the C: N ratio in the sediments increased. (2) Lake depth and area are the main natural factors affecting the extent of nitrogen deposition. (3) Before 1950, the nitrogen in the lake sediments in the region was sourced mainly from natural sources such as precipitation, woodland, grassland and aquatic plants. After 1950, man-made sources such as sewage and farmland became the main sources of nitrogen. (4) Human social and economic activities have an increasingly significant influence on the lake water environment in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and are also the main factors leading to the deterioration of the aquatic environment.

RESUMO

Ammonia (NH3), as a dominant alkaline gas in the atmosphere, plays a vital role in Chinese urban haze formation process, but its source in urban areas of China is controversial. To identify the sources of urban NH3 in the semi-arid region of East Asia, real-time measurements of NH3 and NH4+ of PM2.5 in the urban atmosphere of Xi'an, inland China during the winter and summer of 2017 were performed and their stable nitrogen isotope composition were analyzed. NH3 was 38.0 ± 9.4 µg/m3 in the summer, which is 1.5 times higher than that in the winter. Concentration of NH3 in both seasons well correlated with that of PAHs in PM2.5 and the mass ratio of (BbF + BeP + IP + BghiP) to the total PAHs, suggesting that fossil fuel combustion is an important source of NH3 in Xi'an. Moreover, diurnal variation pattern of NH3 was consistent with that of CO in the summer, peaking in the morning and evening rush hours, respectively, further indicating an importance of the contribution of traffic emissions to NH3 in the city. Based on the source apportionment by using isotope mixing model, we found that 66.4% and 62.5% of NH3 in the urban atmosphere were contributed by non-agricultural sources in the summer and winter, respectively. Our work revealed that non-agricultural sources dominate the atmospheric NH3 of Xi'an, where haze pollution is still severe, and suggested that emission controls of non-agricultural NH3 could be an effective way to mitigate the air pollution problem in the semi-arid region of East Asia.

RESUMO

According to ecological theory, two species cannot occupy the same niche. Using nitrogen isotope analyses (δ15N) of amino acids, we tested the extent to which two sympatric deposit-feeding amphipods, Monoporeia affinis and Pontoporeia femorata, partition their trophic resources. We found that trophic position (TP) and resynthesis index (∑V; a proxy for degradation status of ingested material prior to assimilation by the consumer) differ between species. The surface-feeding M. affinis had higher TP and intermediate ∑V, both pointing to a large contribution of metazoans in its diet. P. femorata, which feeds in the subsurface layers, had lower TP and a bimodal distribution of the ∑V values, supporting previous experimental evidence of a larger feeding niche. We also evaluated whether TP and ∑V values have consequences for amphipod fecundity and embryo viability and found that embryo viability in M. affinis was negatively linked to TP. Our results indicate that the amino acid-δ15N data paired with information about reproductive status are useful for detecting differences in the trophic ecology of sympatric amphipods.
