RESUMO

This paper describes how macroscopic stirring of a reaction mixture can be used to produce nanostructures exhibiting properties not readily achievable via other protocols. In particular, it is shown that by simply adjusting the stirring rate, a standard glutathione-based method-to date, used to produce only marginally stable fluorescent silver nanoclusters, Ag NCs-can be boosted to yield nanoclusters retaining fluorescence for unprecedented periods of over 2 years. This enhancement derives not simply from increased homogenization of the reaction mixture but mainly from an appropriately timed delivery of oxygen from above the reaction mixture. In effect, oxygen serves as a reagent that dictates size, structure, stability, and functional properties of the growing nanoobjects.

RESUMO

In experiments considering cell handling in microchannels, cell sedimentation in the storage container is a key problem because it affects the reproducibility of the experiments. Here, a simple and low-cost cell mixing device (CMD) is presented; the device is designed to prevent the sedimentation of cells in a syringe during their injection into a microfluidic channel. The CMD is based on a slider crank device made of 3D-printed parts that, combined with a permanent magnet, actuate a stir bar placed into the syringe containing the cells. By using A549 cell lines, the device is characterized in terms of cell viability (higher than 95%) in different mixing conditions, by varying the oscillation frequency and the overall mixing time. Then, a dedicated microfluidic experiment is designed to evaluate the injection frequency of the cells within a microfluidic chip. In the presence of the CMD, a higher number of cells are injected into the microfluidic chip with respect to the static conditions (2.5 times), proving that it contrasts cell sedimentation and allows accurate cell handling. For these reasons, the CMD can be useful in microfluidic experiments involving single-cell analysis.

RESUMO

Rosemary has many medicinal and therapeutic properties and therefore it is important to study how to maximize the recovery of its bioactive compounds. In the present study, four different extraction techniques were used, namely stirring extraction (STE), pulsed electric field-assisted extraction (PEF), ultrasound probe-assisted extraction (UPAE), and ultrasound bath-assisted extraction (UBAE). First, some primary experiments were carried out in order to optimize each technique individually through the Plackett-Burman design. Then, each technique was applied under optimal conditions and the results were compared with each other. The optimal total polyphenol content (TPC) of STE is ~19 mg gallic acid equivalents per gram of dry weight (dw), while the antioxidant activity of the extract is 162 µmol ascorbic acid equivalents (AAEs) per gram of dw via FRAP and ~110 µmol AAE per gram of dw via DPPH. As for PEF, the optimal TPC is ~12 mg GAE/g dw, and the FRAP and DPPH values are ~102 and ~70 µmol AAE per gram of dw, respectively. When it comes to UPAE, the optimal TPC is ~16 mg GAE/g dw and the antioxidant capacity of the extract is ~128 µmol AAE/g dw through FRAP and ~98 µmol AAE/g dw through DPPH. UBAE optimal extract yielded ~17 mg GAE/g dw TPC, ~146 µmol AAE/g dw for FRAP, and ~143 µmol AAE/g dw for DPPH. The highest flavonoid content (~6.5 mg rutin equivalent/g dw) and DPPH (~143 µmol ascorbic acid equivalent/g dw) is obtained through UBAE. UPAE has been shown to be more efficient in recovering ascorbic acid (~20 mg/g dw). Additionally, the chlorophyll-to-carotenoid ratios of UPAE and UBAE were 2.98 and 2.96, respectively, indicating that the extracts had a generally positive impact on health. Considering the environmental impact of each extraction technique but also which antioxidant factor needs to be maximized, the most suitable extraction technique will be chosen.

RESUMO

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as a greener alternative to other more polluting traditional solvents and have attracted a lot of interest in the last two decades. The DESs are less toxic dissolvents and have a lower environmental footprint. This paper presents an alternative synthesis method to the classical heating-stirring method. The ultrasound method is one of the most promising synthesis methods for DESs in terms of yield and energy efficiency. Therefore, the ultrasound synthesis method was studied to obtain hydrophobic (Aliquat 336:L-Menthol (3:7); Lidocaine:Decanoic acid (1:2)) and hydrophilic DESs based on choline chloride, urea, ethylene glycol and oxalic acid. The physical characterization of DESs via comparison of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra showed no difference between the DESs obtained by heating-stirring and ultrasound synthesis methods. The study and comparison of all the prepared DESs were carried out via nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The density and viscosity properties of DESs were evaluated. The density values were similar for both synthesis methods. However, differences in viscosity values were detected due to the presence of some water in hygroscopic DESs.

RESUMO

Hydraulic oil leaks during mechanical maintenance, resulting in flushing wastewater contaminated with dispersed nano-oil droplets. In this study, 75 mg L-1 of polysilicate aluminum ferric (PSAF) was stirred at 350 rpm and the optimal chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was 71%. The increase of PSAF led to more hydrolysis of Fe, and 1,175 cm-1 hydroxyl bridged with negative oil droplets. At the same molar concentration, PSAF hydrolyzes cationic metals more rapidly than polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC). PSAF forms flocs of smaller complex structures with greater bridging. The Al-O and Si-O peaks occurred at 611 and 1,138 cm-1, indicating the formation of Si-O-Fe and Si-O-Al bonds on the flocs surface. Higher stirring speeds did not change the free energy of the flocs surface γTot, mainly because the decrease in the van der Waals force (γLW) offset the increase of Lewis acid-base force (γAB). Preserving the non-polar surface, in summary, owing to its bridging abilities and affinity for non-polar surfaces, PSAF demonstrates superior efficiency over PAC in capturing and removing oil droplets.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To develop a method which is used for rapid determination of 16 kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) and 16 kinds of phthalates(PAEs) in tap water by stirring rod adsorption extraction(SBSE) combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS). METHODS: The twister mixing rod coated with polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) and ethylene glycol-polydimethylsiloxane(EG-silicone) was used to enrich analyte from 50 mL tap water. The twister mixing rod coated with EG-silicone was directly placed into the sample bottle containing 50 mL of tap water, while fixing the PDMS stir bar on the inner wall of the sample bottle and immersing it in the liquid. Add 5%(W/V) sodium chloride to the sample bottle, followed by adding 5% methanol. Stir at room temperature for 2 hours for extraction. Next, remove the mixing stick and dry its surface. The pre-prepared SBSE was analyzed by TD-GC/MS, with the optimized thermal desorption conditions: desorption temperature 275 ℃, desorption time 15 min, cryofocusing temperature-40 ℃. RESULTS: Regression equations revealed acceptable linearity(correlation coefficients >0.986) across the working-standard range from 200-2000 ng/L for the 32 analytes. The limits of detection(LODs)were further evaluated were from 1.13-121 ng/L. With the optimized pretreatment method, the spiked recoveries of tap samples(200 and 2000 ng/L)were in the range of 62.5%-98.4% with the relative standard deviations(RSDs) of 3.5%-25.3%. CONCLUSION: The established method can realize the rapid detection of high throughput in the laboratory, it is simple, convenient to operate, and the extraction and analysis time is short.

RESUMO

According to existing literature, there are no conclusive results on the impact of stirring on hydrothermal carbonization (HTC); some studies report a significant impact on the product's properties, while others indicate no influence. This study investigates the influence of stirring rate on several responses and properties of HTC products, including solid mass yield, solid carbon fraction, surface area, surface functional groups, morphology, and the fate of inorganic elements during HTC. Waste biomass was introduced as a feedstock to a 2 L HTC reactor, where the effects of temperature (180-250 °C), residence time (4-12 h), biomass to water (B/W) ratio (1-10%), and stirring rate (0-130 rpm) were investigated. The findings of this study conclusively indicated that the stirring rate does not influence any of the studied responses or properties of hydrochar under the selected experimental conditions used in this study. Nevertheless, the results indicated that a low-stirring rate (5 RPM) is enough to slightly enhanced the heating-up phase of the HTC reactor. For future research, it is recommended to examine the impact of stirring rate on the HTC of other types of biomass using the methodology developed in this study.

RESUMO

Foundry dust is the main refractory solid waste in the foundry industry, and its resource utilization is a top priority for realizing green and cleaner production. The massive amount of coal dust in foundry dust is a potential impediment to the recycling of foundry dust, and the efficient separation of coal dust is crucial to solving the above problems. In this paper, the flotation separation of coal dust from foundry dust enhanced by pre-soaking assisted mechanical stirring was reported. The influence of pre-soaking, stirring speed, and stirring time on the flotation results of foundry dust was systematically studied, and the enhancement mechanism was analyzed based on the microstructure and hydrophobicity of foundry dust. Flotation kinetics experiments with different stirring time were conducted to clarify the flotation process of foundry dust. The results indicate that the pre-soaking of foundry dust is beneficial for the water-absorbing swelling of clay minerals coated on the surface of coal dust, and the subsequent mechanical stirring pretreatment promotes the monomer dissociation of foundry dust, which increases the contact angle of foundry dust and considerably improves the flotation results. The optimal stirring speed and stirring time were 2400 rpm and 30 min, respectively. The classical first-order model presented the highest degree of fitting with the flotation data among the five flotation kinetics models. Therefore, the pre-soaking assisted mechanical stirring is a promising method for promoting flotation separation and the complete recycling of foundry dust.

RESUMO

The previous biodiesel purification by Solvent-Aided Crystallization (SAC) using 1-butanol as assisting agent and parameters for SAC were optimized such as coolant temperature, cooling time and stirring speed. Meanwhile, 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF) was selected as an alternative to previous organic solvents for this study. In this context, it is used to replace solvent 1-butanol from a conducted previous study. This study also focuses on the technological improvements in the purification of biodiesel via SAC as well as to produce an even higher purity of biodiesel. Experimental works on the transesterification process to produce crude biodiesel were performed and SAC was carried out to purify the crude biodiesel. The crude biodiesel content was analyzed by using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to measure the composition of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) present. The optimum value to yield the highest purity of FAME for parameters coolant temperature, cooling time, and stirring speed is -4 °C, 10 min and 210 rpm, respectively. It can be concluded that the assisting solvent 2-MeTHF has a significant effect on the process parameters to produce purified biodiesel according to the standard requirement.

RESUMO

This study was designed to show the changes in glycolmacropeptides (GMPs) of whey protein solution (WPS) due to different pretreatments before and after ultrafiltration (UF). The combined form of two variants (A&B) of GMPs is a helpful compound for nutritional management of phenylketonuria and ulcerative-colitis diseases and has low content of phenylalanine (Phe). WPS with 10% concentration was prepared, acidified (adjusted to pH = 3.0), and passed through a PES (polyethersulfone) membrane in the 1st-stage of ultrafiltration (UF-1). Then the resulting permeate was neutralized and went through the 2nd-stage of ultrafiltration (UF-2) under similar conditions. Four experiments of TRT-CON, CON-TRT, TRT-TRT, and CON-CON were used with different pretreatments, where TRT was a mixing-treatment of 30 min at 150 RPM applied either after acidification of WPS or after neutralization of first permeate and before UF-2 process. While the concentration and purity of the combined GMPs in UF-2 retentate in TRT-TRT respectively were >95.6 and 99.5%, its Phe became <10 ppm among the experiments. Highly glycolyzed polymers of GMPs (MW = 45-50 kDa) were formed in the TRT-TRT experiment and went through the pore sizes of PES membrane of UF-1 easily because of their flexible structure. However, they remained in the UF-2 retentate, due to to the formation of bulky polymers. The TRT-TRT experiment had the highest reversible and irreversible resistances for passing through the UF-1 and remaining on the UF-2 membranes, and its fouling index was significantly less than other experiments.

RESUMO

Recently, scientists have reported a range of chiral fluorescence materials or chiral composites that can emit circularly polarized luminescence. Herein, two achiral metal-organic colloidal solutions were studied, showing active circularly polarized luminescence, which is observed in vortex stirring. The absolute values for glum are 0.05 and 0.03 and the plus or minus sign of glum depends on the colloidal structure and stirring direction, which make the property easy to manipulate. Further, the host-guest interaction study suggests both electrostatic interactions and coordination bonding may influence the chiroptical property from the colloidal solution to the guest molecule. Rhodamine 6G and its carboxylic acid derivative exhibit good quantum yields and acceptable glum values in the colloidal solution.

RESUMO

Long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) are commonly found in lipid-rich wastewaters and are a key factor to monitor the anaerobic digesters. A new simple, fast, precise, and suitable method for routine analysis of LCFA is proposed. The system involves in-syringe-magnetic stirring-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) prior to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) without a derivatization process. Calibration curves were prepared in an ethanol solution (R2 ≥ 0.996), which was also useful as disperser solvent. Hexane was chosen as the extraction solvent. Several parameters (pH, ionic strength, extraction solvent volume, stirring time) were optimized in multivariate and univariate studies. Limits of detection (LODs) were found in the range 0.01-0.05 mg L-1 and good precision inter-day (RSDs≤7.9%) and intra-day (RSDs≤4.4%) were obtained. The method was applied to quantify LCFA in supernatants of anaerobic digesters and olive mill wastewaters (OMW). Palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids were the most abundant fatty acid in the analyzed samples and the relative recoveries for all of them were between 81 and 113%.

RESUMO

In order to extract antioxidant phenolic compounds from spent grain (SG) two extraction methods were studied: the ultrasound-assisted method (US) and the Ultra-Turrax method (high stirring rate) (UT). Liquid to solid ratios, solvent concentration, time, and temperature/stirring rate were optimized. Spent grain extracts were analyzed for their total phenol content (TPC) (0.62 to 1.76 mg GAE/g SG DW for Ultra-Turrax pretreatment, and 0.57 to 2.11 mg GAE/g SG DW for ultrasound-assisted pretreatment), total flavonoid content (TFC) (0.6 to 1.67 mg QE/g SG DW for UT, and 0.5 to 1.63 mg QE/g SG DW for US), and antioxidant activity was measured using 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical (25.88% to 79.58% for UT, and 27.49% to 78.30% for UT). TPC was greater at a high stirring rate and high exposure time up to a certain extent for the Ultra-Turrax method, and at a high temperature for the ultrasound-assisted method. P-coumaric acid (20.4 ± 1.72 mg/100 SG DW for UT, and 14.0 ± 1.14 mg/100 SG DW for US) accounted for the majority of the phenolic found compounds, followed by rosmarinic (6.5 ± 0.96 mg/100 SG DW for UT, and 4.0 ± 0.76 mg/100 SG DW for US), chlorogenic (5.4 ± 1.1 mg/100 SG DW for UT, and non-detectable for US), and vanillic acids (3.1 ± 0.8 mg/100 SG DW for UT, and 10.0 ± 1.03 mg/100 SG DW for US) were found in lower quantities. Protocatechuic (0.7 ± 0.05 mg/100 SG DW for UT, and non-detectable for US), 4-hydroxy benzoic (1.1 ± 0.06 mg/100 SG DW for UT, and non-detectable for US), and caffeic acids (0.7 ± 0.03 mg/100 SG DW for UT, and non-detectable for US) were present in very small amounts. Ultrasound-assisted and Ultra-Turrax pretreatments were demonstrated to be efficient methods to recover these value-added compounds.

RESUMO

Extraction of eggs of Meloidogyne spp. in sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is a helpful procedure to assess the population levels and to obtain inoculum. In this sense, laboratory and greenhouse experiments were done to evaluate the effect of the NaOCl concentration on the viability of M. enterolobii eggs. Additionally, the objective of this investigation was to corroborate the preferable treatments to count populations in cucumber galled roots or to obtain inoculum of M. enterolobii. It was shown that the effect of the NaOCl concentration on the viability of M. enterolobii eggs is potentially detrimental. The NaOCl concentration caused a higher hatching, which in turn, resulted in non-infective larvae. Therefore, the best treatments to obtain inoculum of eggs of M. enterolobii included the 0.75% NaOCl (with 8-min stirring), 0.5% NaOCl (with stirring for 8, 12, and 16 min), and 0.3% NaOCl concentration (with stirring for 8, 12, 16, and 20 min). For a correct estimate of the egg population in roots, we show by several treatments that a concentration of 0.5% NaOCl (with stirring for 8, 12, and 16 min) and 0.75% NaOCl (with 8-min stirring) give the highest results.

RESUMO

We study herein numerically the use of induced-charge electrokinetic phenomena to enable a flexible control of ion transport of dilute electrolyte in a straight ion concentration polarization system. The effect of three convection modes of induced-charge electrokinetic phenomena, including induced-charge electroosmosis, flow-field effect transistor, and alternating-current electroosmosis (ACEO), on convective arrestment of diffusive wave-front propagation is investigated by developing a cross-scale and fully coupled transient numerical simulation model, wherein multiple frequency electrochemical polarization and nonlinear diffuse charge dynamics in spatiotemporally varying solution conductivity are taken into account. We demonstrate by detailed comparative simulation studies that ACEO vortex flow field above a metal strip array arranged along the anodic chamber's bottom surface serves as the most efficient way for adjusting the salt density distribution at micrometer and even millimeter dimension, due to its high flexibility in controlling the stirring flow state with the introduction of two extra electrical parameters. The specific operating status is determined by whether the electrode array is floating in potential (induced-charge electroosmosis) or biased to ground (flow-field effect transistor) or forced to oscillate at another Fourier mode (ACEO). These results prove useful for on-chip electric current control with electroconvective stirring.

RESUMO

We propose a straightforward access to a rotating light-emitting device powered by wireless electrochemistry. A magnetic stirrer is used to rotate a light-emitting diode (LED) due to the intrinsic magnetic properties of the tips that contain iron. At the same time, the LED is submitted to an electric field and acts as a bipolar electrode. The electrochemical processes that are coupled on both extremities of the LED drive an electron flow across the device, resulting in light emission. The variation of the LED alignment in time enables an alternating light emission that is directly controlled by the rotation rate. The stirring also enables a continuous mixing of the electrolyte that improves the stability of the output signal. Finally, the LED brightness can readily reveal a change of chemical composition in the electrolyte solution.

RESUMO

The anisotropic formation of elongated metal-oxide aggregates in water under intensive stirring is analyzed. It is treated in terms of anisotropic ballistically mediated aggregation kinetics in open systems. The basic kinetic equations describing the stages of homogeneous nucleation, independent growth, and ripening of the aggregates are formulated for the open system under the external influence with the stirring intensity as the main parameter governing the process. The most significant elongation of the aggregates is shown to evolve at the ripening stage.

RESUMO

The effects of the bioreactor conditions, in particular the mode and intensity of aeration and mixing were studied on itaconic acid (IA) fermentation efficiency by Aspergillus terreus strain from glucose substrate. IA was produced in batch system by systematically varying the oxygen content of the aeration gas (from 21 to 31.5 vol% O2) and the stirring rate (from 150 to 600 rpm). The data were analyzed kinetically to characterize the behavior of the process, and besides, the performances were evaluated comparatively with the literature. It turned out that the operation of the bioreactor with either the higher inlet O2 concentration (31.5 vol% O2) or faster stirring (600 rpm) could enhance biological IA generation the most, resulting in yield and volumetric productivity of 0.31 g IA/g glucose and 0.32 g IA/g glucose and 3.15 g IA/L day and 4.26 g IA/L day, respectively. Overall, the significance of fermentation settings was shown in this work regarding IA production catalyzed by A. terreus and notable advances could be realized by adjusting the aeration and stirring towards an optimal combination.

RESUMO

In this article, a light-emitting diode (LED)-based photoreactor was designed and evaluated for degradation of the antibiotic sulfathiazole (STZ), using heterogeneous photo-Fenton process with an iron ore residue as catalyst. The effects of the type of magnetic stirrer bar, use of baffles, rotation speed, and type and intensity of irradiation source were evaluated. The results showed that the degradation of STZ was strongly influenced by rotation speed (1100 rpm) and that the use of an octagonal stirrer bar favoured high dispersion and greater contact of the catalyst with the reaction medium. Although the presence of baffles had little influence on STZ degradation, their use enabled good dispersion of the catalyst (due to axial flow) and eliminated the vortex formed at high stirring speeds. It was found that the iron mining residue could be activated by UV LEDs, visible light LEDs, and black light irradiation, with similar degradation efficiencies achieved. Using the LEDs, STZ concentrations below the detection limit were obtained after 40 min, with power consumption 38-fold (UV LEDs) and 22-fold (visible light LEDs) lower than required for black light irradiation. The results demonstrated the advantages of the use of LED devices as irradiation systems in heterogeneous photo-Fenton processes.

RESUMO

Finding the optimum operational conditions (mainly temperature and stirring) inside the fermenters is crucial in the field of anaerobic digestion. This study was conducted to contribute to the research area of anaerobic digestion process optimization and is an example for other biogas plants to improve efficiency. The research aimed at finding the optimum operational conditions in a large-scale biogas plant located in Lower Saxony, Germany, which started operation in 2011. The optimization activities were performed by operating the fermenters under different operational conditions: the temperature inside the fermenters ranged between 40°C and 43°C, while applying several stirring scenarios. These changes led to an increase in specific electricity yield of 11.7% and a decrease in internal energy consumption of 10.4%. The total internal energy consumption of the biogas plant was in the range of 6.3-7.2% (the average monthly internal energy consumption was 6.7% in 2013 and 6.0% in 2014) from their own production, and 28% of this energy consumption was used by the stirrers before optimization. Therefore, finding the optimum operational conditions leads to high energy harvesting and lower internal energy consumption.
