BACKGROUND: Vinyl polyether silicone (VPES) is a novel impression biomaterial made of a combination of vinyl polysiloxane (VPS) and polyether (PE). Thus, it is significant to assess its properties and behaviour under varied disinfectant test conditions. This study aimed to assess the dimensional stability of novel VPES impression material after immersion in standard disinfectants for different time intervals. METHODS: Elastomeric impression material used -medium body regular set (Monophase) [Exa'lence GC America]. A total of 84 Specimens were fabricated using stainless steel die and ring (ADA specification 19). These samples were distributed into a control group (n=12) and a test group (n=72). The test group was divided into 3 groups, based on the type of disinfectant used - Group-A- 2% Glutaraldehyde, Group-B- 0. 5% Sodium hypochlorite and Group-C- 2% Chlorhexidine each test group was further divided into 2 subgroups (n=12/subgroup) based on time intervals for which each sample was immersed in the disinfectants - subgroup-1- 10 mins and Subgroup 2- 30 mins. After the impression material was set, it was removed from the ring and then it was washed in water for 15 seconds. Control group measurements were made immediately on a stereomicroscope and other samples were immersed in the three disinfection solutions for 10 mins and 30 mins to check the dimensional stability by measuring the distance between the lines generated by the stainless steel die on the samples using a stereomicroscope at x40 magnification. RESULTS: The distance measured in the control group was 4397.2078 µm and 4396.1571 µm; for the test group Group-A- 2% Glutaraldehyde was 4396.4075 µm and 4394.5992 µm; Group-B- 0. 5% Sodium hypochlorite was 4394.5453 µm and 4389.4711 µm Group-C- 2% Chlorhexidine was 4395.2953 µm and 4387.1703 µm respectively for 10 mins and 30 mins. Percentage dimensional change was in the range of 0.02 - 0.25 for all the groups for 10 mins and 30 mins. CONCLUSIONS: 2 % Glutaraldehyde is the most suitable disinfectant for VPES elastomeric impression material in terms of dimensional stability and shows minimum dimensional changes as compared to that of 2% Chlorhexidine and 0.5% Sodium hypochlorite.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the best approach to reduce the unfavorable change in the three different dimensions of impressions using disinfection durations of 15 and 30 min; three different disinfection procedures; and alginate impression products as research factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CA37, impressional, and cream alginate impressions were used; distortion in the AB, AC, and BC dimensions of impressions using disinfection durations of 15 and 30 min was studied; and no disinfection (ND), conventional disinfection (CD), and sonicator-activated disinfection (SAD) procedures were measured. RESULTS: Regarding AB dimension, the impressional has best performance when CD was applied for both 15 and 30 min. When SAD was applied for 15 min, impressional and cream alginates provide best performance. When CD was applied for 15 min, CA37 and impressional alginates provide best performance. Although ND-applied CA37 alginate after 30 min provides best performance, because of many outlier values, its implication may not be considered as meaningful. Regarding AC dimension, cream alginate has best performance when CD was applied for 15 min. The AC distances in all the alginates are considerably different from the base model after 30 min. Regarding BC dimension, only the CA37 alginate has the best performance when ND was applied for 15 min. All the alginates are considerably different from that of the base model after 30 min. CONCLUSION: Preference of 15-min disinfection can provide favorable results to obtain all impressions with minimally distorted dimensions. CD is an adequate procedure. The studied SAD needs to be developed further. All alginates are comparably successful to obtain impressions with desired distortion degrees.

BACKGROUND: Propolis is a natural substance produced by bees and is known to have antimicrobial activity. Our aim was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of micellar nanocomposites loaded with an ethyl acetate extract of Brazilian red propolis as a cavity cleaning agent and its influence on the color and microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of the dentin/resin interface. METHODS: An ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector (UPLC-DAD) assay was used to determine the flavonoids and isoflavones present in an ethyl acetate extract of Brazilian red propolis (EARP) and micellar nanocomposites loaded with EARP (MNRP). The antimicrobial activity of EARP and MNRP was tested against Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Candida albicans. One of the following experimental treatments was applied to etched dentin (phosphoric acid, 15 s): 5 µL of MNRP (RP3, 0.3%; RP6, 0.6%; or RP1, 1.0% w/v), placebo, and 2% chlorhexidine digluconate. Single Bond adhesive (3 M/ESPE) was applied and a 4-mm-thick resin crown (Z350XT, 3 M/ESPE) was built up. After 24 h, the teeth were sectioned into sticks for the µTBS test and scanning electron microscopy. Spectrophotometry according to the CIE L*a*b* chromatic space was used to evaluate the color. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the Tukey test or Kruskal-Wallis test and the same test for pairwise comparisons between the means (P < 0.05). RESULTS: The UPLC-DAD assay identified the flavonoids liquiritigenin, pinobanksin, pinocembrin, and isoliquiritigenin and the isoflavonoids daidzein, formononetin, and biochanin A in the EARP and micellar nanocomposites. EARP and MNRP presented antimicrobial activity against the cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus, and for Candida albicans. ΔE values varied from 2.31 to 3.67 (P = 0.457). The mean µTBS for RP1 was significantly lower than for the other groups (P < 0.001). Dentin treated with RP1 showed the shortest resin tags followed by RP6 and RP3. CONCLUSIONS: The EARP and (MNRP) showed antimicrobial activity for the main agents causing dental caries (Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus) and for Candida albicans. MNRP at concentrations of 0.3 and 0.6% used as a cavity cleaner do not compromise the aesthetics or µTBS of the dentin/resin interface.

PURPOSE: To comparatively evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of freshly prepared electrolyzed oxidizing water (EOW) with that of 2.4% glutaraldehyde (GA) and 1% sodium hypochlorite (SH) on clinically derived poly vinyl siloxane (PVS) impressions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four clinically derived PVS impressions each were obtained from 10 subjects. One impression from each subject was randomly kept as control (group I), without disinfection. The remaining three impressions were randomly disinfected by immersion in either 2.4% GA (group II), 1% SH (group III), or freshly prepared EOW (group IV). The samples were subjected to microbial culture individually on brain heart infusion (BHI) agar medium. The organisms isolated were confirmed by visual examination and gram staining. Mean colony forming units (CFU) were counted, log10 reduction obtained and compared. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by multiple comparisons using Tukey-HSD post hoc tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Streptococci, Staphylococci, Pseudomonas, Candida, Proteus, Klebsiella, and E. coli were isolated from all impressions including the controls, except those disinfected by EOW. All three disinfectants showed significant reduction in CFU and log10 reduction values as compared to the controls. EOW showed significantly higher reduction in log10 values compared to GA and SH, whereas GA and SH showed similar reductions. EOW, GA, and SH showed kill rates of 100%, 99.60%, and 99.82%, respectively. CONCLUSION: EOW showed significant antimicrobial efficacy as evidenced by reduction in log10 values when used as an immersion disinfectant for PVS impressions when compared with the results obtained using GA and SH. These results need further investigation. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: EOW shows high antimicrobial efficacy when used as an immersion disinfectant as compared to GA and SH for clinically derived PVS impressions.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of disinfection/sterilization methods and their effects on polishing capacity, micomorphology, and composition of two different composite fiishing and polishing instruments. METHODS: Two brands of finishing and polishing instruments (Jiffy and Optimize), were analyzed. For the antimicrobial test, 60 points (30 of each brand) were used for polishing composite restorations and submitted to three different groups of disinfection/sterilization methods: none (control), autoclaving, and immersion in peracetic acid for 60 minutes. The in vitro tests were performed to evaluate the polishing performance on resin composite disks (Amelogen) using a 3D scanner (Talyscan) and to evaluate the effects on the points' surface composition (XRF) and micromorphology (MEV) after completing a polishing and sterilizing routine five times. RESULTS: Both sterilization/disinfection methods were efficient against oral cultivable organisms and no deleterious modification was observed to point surface.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 1% sodium hypochlorite (H1%) and 4% chlorhexidine gluconate (CG4%) on the adhesion of Candida albicans to denture base acrylic resins, as well as to verify the effect of the acquired salivary pellicle (ASP) formation on this process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 300 acrylic specimens were immersed in distilled water (control) (n = 100), H1% (n = 100), or CG4% (n = 100) for 30 days. Twenty specimens were used in each experimental period (0, 1, 7, 15, 30 days). At the end of disinfection testing periods, 10 specimens of each group were exposed to human whole saliva to simulate ASP formation, and then all specimens were incubated with C. albicans ATTC 90028. Microorganism adhesion was analyzed by fluorescence microscopy, after staining with Acridine orange. RESULTS: In the 30(th) disinfection cycle in relation to baseline, the H1% or CG4%, without ASP formation, reduced the C. albicans adhesion by approximately 80%; however, with ASP, this reduction after disinfection with H1% was higher (88%). The presence of ASP resulted in higher reduction of adhered fungal cells in comparison to resin without ASP, at the 1(st) H1% or CG4% disinfection cycle, as well as at 30(th) H1% disinfection cycles. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the presence of saliva might influence the adhesion of C. albicans and improve the effectiveness of methods to reduce fungal adhesion.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Dental shade guides are used to evaluate tooth color before prosthodontic procedures and are subjected to disinfection after use. The effect of disinfection on shade guides has not been thoroughly investigated. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of disinfectants on the color of shade tabs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Changes in the color (ΔE) of VITA Classical Shade Guide tabs were measured with a VITA Easyshade spectrophotometer in the CIELAB system and calculated after being subjected to Cavicide, Asepticare TB, Sporicidin, and distilled water (control) over a simulated period of 2 years. Statistical analysis was accomplished by a 2-way analysis of variance followed by the Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) test (α=.05). RESULTS: A significant difference was noted in the degree of shade tab color change, depending on the type of disinfectant used (F=153.2, P<.001). No significant difference was noted in the amount of shade tab color change that occurred after disinfection among the different shade tabs used (F=0.611, P=.865), nor was a significant interaction noted between the type of disinfectant and the different shade tabs used (F=0.7, P=.919). Asepticare TB showed the least significant amount of change (ΔE=0.401), and Sporicidin (ΔE=0.889) and the control (ΔE=0.969) showed significantly more color change than Asepticare TB but less than Cavicide (ΔE=1.198). CONCLUSIONS: The average total CIELAB color difference for 50% human perceptibility is approximately 1 unit (under standardized laboratory conditions). In the oral cavity, however, an average change of 3.7 ΔE units could still allow teeth to be perceived as having the same color. Therefore, although the results are statistically significant, they may not be clinically important.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Cutting efficiency is one of the most important factors to consider when a specific dental diamond rotary instrument is selected. However, the selection of a dental diamond rotary instrument is based on clinical experience rather than any scientific evidence. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify how the cutting efficiency of different types of dental diamond rotary instrument changed with repeated cuts and disinfection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four types of diamond rotary instrument from 2 dental manufacturers (Shofu, Jin Dental) were investigated with a high-speed air-turbine handpiece. The groups were as follows: S cham group (n=10): chamfer design from Shofu; J cham group (n=10): chamfer design from Jin Dental; S thin group (n=10): thin tapered design from Shofu; J thin group (n=10): thin tapered design from Jin Dental. Changes in the cutting efficiency of diamond rotary instruments on glass ceramic blocks were measured after repeated cuts. Changes in cutting efficiency also were measured for 30 diamond rotary instruments, the same type as those used in group J cham after disinfection with ethylene oxide gas, immersion in solution, or autoclaving. One-way ANOVA, 2-way ANOVA, and repeated-measures ANOVA were used to identify differences in cutting efficiency, in total cutting efficiency, and change trend in cutting efficiency (α=.05). The Tukey honestly significant difference method was used for the post hoc tests. The principal metal components of the diamond rotary instruments were detected with x-ray spectrometry. RESULTS: The mean (standard deviation [SD]) total cutting efficiency after 10 cuts in the 4 groups was in the following order: J cham group (0.210 ± 0.064 g/min) > S cham group (0.170 ± 0.064 g/min) > J thin group (0.130 ± 0.042 g/min) > S thin group (0.010 ± 0.040 g/min) (P<.05).The decrease in the cutting efficiency was greatest after the first cut. The cutting efficiency was not influenced by repeated disinfection. CONCLUSION: The cutting efficiencies of diamond rotary instruments with different designs and particle sizes showed a decreasing trend after repeated cuts but did not show any change after various disinfecting procedures.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Routine cleaning of a denture may increase the surface roughness of the material. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of denture cleansers and time on the roughness and Candida albicans biofilm formation on a reline resin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Specimens of Tokuyama Rebase Fast II (20 × 10 × 2 mm) were prepared and divided into 9 groups (n=15): Test groups were toothbrushed (30 cycles per day) in 1 of the following solutions: water, soap, or toothpaste. After toothbrushing, the specimens were immersed in solutions of water, sodium perborate, or chlorhexidine. These treatments were done once a day for 365 days. The surface roughness was evaluated at 0, 7, 15, 30, 90, 180, 270, and 365 days, and the C albicans biofilm formation was measured after 365 days. The roughness data were analyzed by 3-way repeated measures ANOVA and the Tukey test (α=.05), and the C albicans biofilm formation was analyzed by 2-way ANOVA. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in the toothbrush and time interaction and in the toothbrush, immersion, and time interaction (P<.001). No significant differences were found between the toothbrush agent and chemical disinfection (P=.085) or between chemical disinfection and time interaction (P=.604). Brushing with dentifrice (PPb and PCh) showed a gradual decrease in surface roughness. The comparison among groups showed that PCh produced the lowest values of roughness. For C albicans biofilm formation, no significant differences were found among the experimental groups. CONCLUSIONS: The roughness values ranged from 0.31 to 0.69 µm for all evaluated groups. For all groups, no significant differences were found in the quantification of C albicans.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of chemical disinfectants on the color stability of acrylic denture teeth (ADT) via spectrophotometric analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 120 central ADT specimens were randomly assigned to eight experimental groups and immersed in the following solutions (n = 15). Tap water/control group (CON), neutral soap (NTS), 2% sodium hypochlorite (SHC1), 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (SHC2), sodium perborate (SPB), povidone-iodine (PVI), chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), and glutaraldehyde (GTA). Color measurements of teeth were performed by spectrophotometry after 10, 30, 48, 72, 144, and 960 immersion cycles in each tested solution. Color differences (ΔE*) were then evaluated using the Commission Internationale D'Eclairage (CIE) L*a* b* color system. Furthermore, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and Friedman comparison tests (α = 0.05) were performed on all data. RESULTS: There were significant differences in ΔE* values (p < 0.05) among the eight experimental groups. In addition, the highest ∆E* values were obtained in group SHC2, followed, respectively, by the SHC1, CHG, SPB, PVI, NTS, and CON groups. CONCLUSION: All the chemical disinfectants used in the study affected the color values of ADTs. Furthermore, ΔE* values increased along with the number of immersion cycles and total immersion time.

AIM: To evaluate if the immersion of chlorhexidine-impregnated gutta-percha points in chlorine-containing endodontic irrigants causes colour changes and precipitate formation. METHODOLOGY: Eighty-one size 25 chlorhexidine medicated (Activ Points, Roeko, Langenau, Germany) and 27 size 25 standard gutta-percha points (Roeko) were immersed in microtubes, containing the following solutions: 0.5 and 5.25% NaOCl or Aquatine (Optident, Ilkley, UK). The samples were visually assessed, by two independent observers, at regular intervals over 3 weeks, to detect colour changes and precipitate formation. A score system was used to grade the precipitate intensity. To compare the number of days required for a precipitate to form mean and standard differences were calculated; the means between the groups were compared using a one-way analysis of variance test. Mean intensity scores were calculated and compared between groups using Kruskal-Wallis procedure followed by the Mann-Whitney test. RESULTS: The groups containing 5.25% NaOCl started to produce a visible precipitate after fourteen days (16.48 ± 0.98) for the Activ points; this process was first noticed with the standard gutta-percha group on day 17 (18.33 ± 1.22 days), with a statistically significant difference (P = 0.002). When looking at the intensity scores from day 17 onwards, these two groups differed statistically, with a greater amount for the AP group (P < 0.001). No other test group presented with changes. CONCLUSION: The placement of impregnated gutta-percha points, in 5.25% NaOCl for a 2-week period, caused the formation of a precipitate in the experimental conditions of this study.

OBJECTIVE: Bonded retainers are used in orthodontics to maintain treatment result. Retention wires are prone to biofilm formation and cause gingival recession, bleeding on probing and increased pocket depths near bonded retainers. In this study, we compare in vitro and in vivo biofilm formation on different wires used for bonded retainers and the susceptibility of in vitro biofilms to oral antimicrobials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Orthodontic wires were exposed to saliva, and in vitro biofilm formation was evaluated using plate counting and live/dead staining, together with effects of exposure to toothpaste slurry alone or followed by antimicrobial mouthrinse application. Wires were also placed intra-orally for 72 h in human volunteers and undisturbed biofilm formation was compared by plate counting and live/dead staining, as well as by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis for compositional differences in biofilms. RESULTS: Single-strand wires attracted only slightly less biofilm in vitro than multi-strand wires. Biofilms on stainless steel single-strand wires however, were much more susceptible to antimicrobials from toothpaste slurries and mouthrinses than on single-strand gold wires and biofilms on multi-strand wires. Also, in vivo significantly less biofilm was found on single-strand than on multi-strand wires. Microbial composition of biofilms was more dependent on the volunteer involved than on wire type. CONCLUSIONS: Biofilms on single-strand stainless steel wires attract less biofilm in vitro and are more susceptible to antimicrobials than on multi-strand wires. Also in vivo, single-strand wires attract less biofilm than multi-strand ones. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Use of single-strand wires is preferred over multi-strand wires, not because they attract less biofilm, but because biofilms on single-strand wires are not protected against antimicrobials as in crevices and niches as on multi-strand wires.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: A new elastomeric impression material, a vinyl polyether silicone, has been commercially introduced. Its dimensional stability at different pouring times has not been reported. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dimensional stability of vinyl polyether silicone (VPES) impressions as a function of delayed-pouring time for up to 2 weeks after performing a recommended clinical disinfection procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The 3 medium-body impression materials tested were EXA'lence 370, Imprint 3, and Impregum Penta soft. Impressions of a cylindrical metal model, which served as a control, were made and poured in a Type V stone after being disinfected in 2.5% buffered glutaraldehyde solution. Die diameter and anteroposterior and cross-arch measurements on each cast were made and compared to direct measurements of the control with a digital micrometer. The linear dimensional changes were compared and analyzed by using the Mann-Whitney U test (α=.05). RESULTS: Considering the absolute values for the mean percentage dimensional change, VPES cast measurements were below 1.0% (P<.001), with the majority being minimal (≤0.34%) at all pour times. Measurements of the casts were larger than those of the control in all but one specimen. The percentage dimensional changes of the individual die diameters were higher than those of the anteroposterior and cross-arch linear measurements. Casts produced from VPES impressions had similar dimensional changes to those of VPS at 1 week of storage and similar changes to those of PE at 2 weeks of storage. The behavior of VPES impressions varied from being the most accurate at immediate-pour to gradually exhibiting higher dimensional changes as time progressed. CONCLUSIONS: Casts produced from a disinfected regular set VPES (EXA'lence 370 monophase) demonstrated excellent dimensional stability at different pour times and were comparable to the tested VPS and PE impression materials.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the surface roughness (Ra) and color stability of acrylic resin colors (Lucitone 550, QC-20 and Vipi-Wave) used for fabricating bases for complete, removable dentures, overdentures and prosthetic protocol after immersion in chemical disinfectants (1% sodium hypochlorite and 2% peracetic acid) for 30 and 60 minutes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty specimens were made of each commercial brand of resin composite, and divided into 2 groups according to the chemical disinfectants. Specimens had undergone the finishing and polishing procedures, the initial color and roughness measurements were taken (t=0), and after this, ten test specimens of each commercial brand of resin composite were immersed in sodium hypochlorite and ten in peracetic acid, for 30 and 60 minutes, with measurements being taken after each immersion period. These data were submitted to statistical analysis. RESULTS: There was evidence of an increase in Ra after 30 minutes immersion in the disinfectants in all the resins, with QC-20 presenting the highest Ra values, and Vipi-Wave the lowest. After 60 minutes immersion in the disinfectants all the resins presented statistically significant color alteration. CONCLUSIONS: Disinfection with 1% sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid altered the properties of roughness and color of the resins.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of thermal cycling and disinfection on the colour change of denture base acrylic resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four different brands of acrylic resins were evaluated (Onda Cryl, QC 20, Classico and Lucitone). All brands were divided into four groups (n = 7) determined according to the disinfection procedure (microwave, Efferdent, 4% chlorhexidine or 1% hypochlorite). The treatments were conducted three times a week for 60 days. All specimens were thermal cycled between 5 and 55°C with 30-s dwell times for 1000 cycles before and after disinfection. The specimens' colour was measured with a spectrophotometer using the CIE L*a*b* system. The evaluations were conducted at baseline (B), after first thermal cycling (T1 ), after disinfection (D) and after second thermal cycling (T2 ). Colour differences (ΔE) were calculated between T1 and B (T1 B), D and B (DB), and T2 and B (T2 B) time-points. RESULTS: The samples submitted to disinfection by microwave and Efferdent exhibited the highest values of colour change. There were significant differences on colour change between the time-points, except for the Lucitone acrylic resin. CONCLUSIONS: The thermal cycling and disinfection procedures significantly affected the colour stability of the samples. However, all values obtained for the acrylic resins are within acceptable clinical parameters.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of simulated disinfections (2% glutaraldehyde, 1% sodium hypochlorite, and microwave energy) on the surface hardness of Trilux, Biocler, Biotone, New Ace, and Magister commercial artificial teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens (n = 10) were made with the teeth included individually in circular blocks of acrylic resin, leaving the labial surface exposed. Cycles of simulated chemical disinfection were accomplished with the specimens immersed in the solutions at room temperature for 10 minutes, followed by tap water washing for 30 seconds and storage in distilled water at room temperature for 7 days until the next disinfection. Simulated disinfection by microwave energy was carried out in a domestic oven with 1300 W at a potency of 50% for 3 minutes with the specimens individually immersed in 150 ml of distilled water. Control (no disinfection) and the experimental groups (first and third disinfection cycles) were submitted to Knoop hardness measurements with indentations at the center of the labial tooth surface. Data were submitted to repeated measure two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Biocler, Magister, and Trilux showed lower surface microhardness when submitted to microwave. Lower microhardness for Biotone was promoted by hypochlorite, while no significant difference was shown for New Ace. The third disinfection cycle significantly decreased the tooth surface hardness only for microwave. CONCLUSIONS: Different disinfection methods promoted different effects on the microhardness of different types of artificial teeth. Surface microhardness of the teeth was less affected by the simulated chemical disinfections when compared to microwaved specimens.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of 2% chlorhexidine, 2% sodium hypochlorite, 3% hydrogen peroxide on shear bond strength of composite resin to dentin using two-step and onestep self-etch bonding systems and to study the mode of failure of specimens under stereomicroscope. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty extracted sound human posterior teeth were used. The occlusal surfaces were ground to expose the dentin and were then randomly divided into 4 main groups. In group I, no cavity disinfectant was used and served as control. In groups II, III, IV, 2% chlorhexidine, 2% sodium hypochlorite and 3% hydrogen peroxide were used as cavity disinfectants respectively. Each group was then divided into two subgroups of 10 teeth each according to the bonding agent used, two-step self-etch (Adper SE Plus) and one-step self-etch (Adper Easy One) respectively. A transparent cylindrical plastic tube was loaded with microhybrid composite and placed over the dentin and light cured for 40 seconds. The specimens were subjected to shear stress in the universal testing machine. RESULTS: Pretreatment with 2% chlorhexidine, 2% sodium hypochlorite and 3% hydrogen peroxide, had a negative effect on the shear bond strength of self-etching bonding systems. CONCLUSION: The highest bond strength was found in 2% chlorhexidine group followed by 2% sodium hypochlorite group and the lowest bond strength was found in 3% hydrogen peroxide group. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: All three cavity disinfectants used in this study reduced the shear bond strength and hence should be used with caution.

Dental impressions disinfection is important to reduce the risk of cross contamination but this process may produce dimensional distortions. Peracetic acid is a disinfectant agent with several favorable characteristics yet underutilized in Dentistry. The aim of this paper is to compare the dimensional stability of casts obtained from addition silicone and polyether impressions that were immersed for 10 minutes in a solution of 0.2% peracetic acid or 1% sodium hypochlorite. Sixty samples in type IV gypsum were produced after a master cast that simulated a full crown preparation of a maxillary premolar. Samples were divided in 6 groups (n = 10) according to the impression material and disinfection agent: Group AC--addition silicone control (without disinfectant); Group APA--addition silicone + 0.2% peracetic acid; Group AH--addition silicone + 1% sodium hypochlorite; Group PC--polyether control (without disinfectant); Group PPA--polyether + 0.2% peracetic acid; Group PH--polyether + 1% sodium hypochlorite. Cast height, base and top diameter were measured and a mean value was obtained for each sample and group all data was statistically analyzed (ANOVA, p < 0.05). There was not a significant statistical difference between addition silicone and polyether impressions regardless of the disinfectant materials. It can be concluded that disinfection with the proposed agents did not produce significant alterations of the impressions and the peracetic acid could be considered a reliable material to disinfect dental molds.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to compare the linear dimensional accuracy of die materials before and after disinfection of the impression. Type IV and V conventional dental stone, type IV-resin impregnated and copper-plated die materials were studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A stainless-steel master die analogs to a complete veneer crown preparation with three scribed lines (I: vertical, II and III: horizontal) was machined and measurements were made from these scribed reference lines. Impressions were made with monophase addition silicone impression material for each of the specimens. 2% glutaraldehyde was used as a disinfectant. The fabricated dies were measured to the nearest 0.0001 mm. ANOVA and post hoc was carried out using Scheffe multiple comparison test at significance level of 0.05. RESULTS: Type IV resin-impregnated dental stone and copperplated dies approximated the dimensions of the master die. Type IV and V conventional dental stone dies showed greater variation in measurements. Statistically significant differences were observed for type IV resin-impregnated and copper-plated dies in dimension I and III. For dimension II no significant differences were found for dies fabricated from four die materials. A one-way analysis of variance indicated no statistical significant differences among the two groups of dies fabricated from disinfectant treated impressions and those fabricated from nondisinfectant treated impressions. CONCLUSION: Type IV resin-impregnated dental stone and copper-plated dies are dimensionally more accurate than type IV and V conventional dental stone die materials. No significant linear distortion in the dies fabricated from the disinfected impressions was observed.

BACKGROUND: Autoclave sterilization and microwave sterilization has been suggested as the effective methods for the disinfection of elastomeric impressions, but subjecting elastomeric impressions to extreme temperature may have adverse effects on critical properties of the elastomers. AIM: To evaluate the effect of chemical disinfection as well as autoclave and microwave sterilization on the surface roughness of elastomeric impression materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The surface roughness of five commercially available polyvinyl siloxane impression materials (Coltene President, Affinis Perfect impression, Aquasil, 3M ESPE Express and GC Exafast) were evaluated after subjecting them to chemical disinfection, autoclaving and microwave sterilization using a Talysurf Intra 50 instrument. Twenty specimens from each material were fabricated and divided into four equal groups, three experimental and one control (n=25). The differences in the mean surface roughness between the treatment groups were recorded and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: No statistically significant increase in the surface roughness was observed when the specimens were subjected to chemical disinfection and autoclave sterilization, increase in roughness and discoloration was observed in all the materials when specimens were subjected to microwave sterilization. CONCLUSION: Chemical disinfection did not have a significant effect but, since it is less effective, autoclave sterilization can be considered effective and autoclaving did not show any specimen discoloration as in microwave sterilization. Microwave sterilization may be considered when impressions are used to make diagnostic casts. A significant increase in surface roughness may produce rougher casts, resulting in rougher tissue surfaces for denture and cast restorations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Autoclave sterilization of vinyl polysiloxane elastomeric impressions for 5 minutes at 134°C at 20 psi may be considered an effective method over chemical disinfection and microwave sterilization, because chemical disinfection does not eliminate all disease-causing microorganisms and microwave sterilization leads to a rougher impression surface.
