RESUMO

Many randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are biased and difficult to reproduce due to methodological flaws and poor reporting. There is increasing attention for responsible research practices and implementation of reporting guidelines, but whether these efforts have improved the methodological quality of RCTs (e.g., lower risk of bias) is unknown. We, therefore, mapped risk-of-bias trends over time in RCT publications in relation to journal and author characteristics. Meta-information of 176,620 RCTs published between 1966 and 2018 was extracted. The risk-of-bias probability (random sequence generation, allocation concealment, blinding of patients/personnel, and blinding of outcome assessment) was assessed using a risk-of-bias machine learning tool. This tool was simultaneously validated using 63,327 human risk-of-bias assessments obtained from 17,394 RCTs evaluated in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR). Moreover, RCT registration and CONSORT Statement reporting were assessed using automated searches. Publication characteristics included the number of authors, journal impact factor (JIF), and medical discipline. The annual number of published RCTs substantially increased over 4 decades, accompanied by increases in authors (5.2 to 7.8) and institutions (2.9 to 4.8). The risk of bias remained present in most RCTs but decreased over time for allocation concealment (63% to 51%), random sequence generation (57% to 36%), and blinding of outcome assessment (58% to 52%). Trial registration (37% to 47%) and the use of the CONSORT Statement (1% to 20%) also rapidly increased. In journals with a higher impact factor (>10), the risk of bias was consistently lower with higher levels of RCT registration and the use of the CONSORT Statement. Automated risk-of-bias predictions had accuracies above 70% for allocation concealment (70.7%), random sequence generation (72.1%), and blinding of patients/personnel (79.8%), but not for blinding of outcome assessment (62.7%). In conclusion, the likelihood of bias in RCTs has generally decreased over the last decades. This optimistic trend may be driven by increased knowledge augmented by mandatory trial registration and more stringent reporting guidelines and journal requirements. Nevertheless, relatively high probabilities of bias remain, particularly in journals with lower impact factors. This emphasizes that further improvement of RCT registration, conduct, and reporting is still urgently needed.

RESUMO

This review essay examines the ambitious thirty-volume series Science and Civilization in Korea (SCK), published between 2010 and 2022. Input from over sixty Korean scholars traces the evolution of Korean science and technology, from elementary tools to advanced semiconductor technology. Inspired by Joseph Needham's series Science and Civilization in China, SCK seeks to reveal the "universal value" embedded in Korean civilization, extending to the tumultuous eras of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This review essay probes SCK's implications and boundaries, elucidating the influences molding its narrative and identifying omissions. It also considers alternative narratives. Albeit rooted in use-centered historiography, such narratives would not be restricted to the local but underscore an array of practices striving for compatibility with global resources. Moreover, they could bridge the "imagined discontinuity"-the notion of rupture around 1900-between "tradition" and "modern" and thus cultivate a more seamless chronicle of Korea's history of technology.

RESUMO

This publication by Dr Ferdinand Runge is ubiquitously credited as first to describe the symptoms, pathology, and treatment of patients with lateral epicondylosis (tennis elbow). However, the main focus of his work was to provide insight into causes of writer's cramp and treatments for the condition, elegantly illustrated in four case reports. This work, recently cited as unavailable, is written in German. Given the high frequency of citations in the English literature, it was considered useful to translate it into English to widen access to a broader readership. The purpose of this project was briefly to introduce the life and clinical expertise of Dr. Ferdinand Runge and the content of his work, followed by a translation of the entire manuscript into English. The paper was translated by the three authors using a process of sequential consensus. All are proficient in German and English, with clinical expertise in both topics. A brief reflection is provided to place Dr Runge's observations, clinical reasoning, and contemporaneously available treatments in the context of current thinking about lateral epicondylalgia. Dr. Runge shares his expertise, carefully reporting pertinent examination findings for each case, sharing hypotheses about the etiology of writer's cramp, and using the effectiveness of his applied treatment as confirmation. He concludes that careful evaluation of the patient's activities that hindered writing prior to the onset of the writer's cramp is key to managing this ailment. The topics addressed in this classic work are still thought-provoking.

RESUMO

This paper chronicles the third decade of MASCC from 2010. There was a generational change in this decade, building on the solid foundation of the founders. It included the first female President, and a new Executive Director with a background in strategy and business development and operations as applied to healthcare. The headquarters moved from Copenhagen to Toronto. The first meeting to be held outside of Europe or North America was held in Adelaide, Australia, and the membership in the Asia Pacific region expanded. A program of international affiliates saw national supportive care organisations formally link with MASCC. In cancer supportive care, there was a raft of new toxicities to manage as immunotherapies were added to conventional cytotoxic treatment. There was also a greater emphasis on the psychosocial needs of patients and families. New MASCC groups were formed to respond to this evolution in cancer management. The MASCC journal, Supportive Care in Cancer, continued to grow in impact, and MASCC published two editions of a textbook of supportive care and survivorship. The decade ended with the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that served to highlight the importance of good supportive care to patients with cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: During COVID-19, a Kaggle challenge was issued to data scientists to leverage text mining to provide high-level summaries of full-text articles in the COVID-19 Open Research Dataset (CORD-19) data set, a data set containing articles around COVID-19 and other epidemics. A question was asked: "What if nursing had something similar?" PURPOSE: Describe the development and function of the Nursing COVID and Historical Epidemic Literature and describe high-level summaries of abstracts within the repository. METHOD: Nurse-specific literature was abstracted from two data sets: CORD-19 and LitCOVID. LitCOVID is a data set containing the most up-to-date literature around COVID-19. Multiple text mining algorithms were utilized to provide summaries of the articles. DISCUSSION: As of July 2020, the repository contains 760 articles. Summaries indicate the importance of psychological support for nurses and of high-impact rapid education. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this repository is the only repository specific for nursing that utilizes text mining to provide summaries.

RESUMO

The name Abraham Vater is internationally associated with the confluence of the common bile duct and the pancreatic duct. Vater's writings were published 300 years ago along with the most important anatomical publications of that time. In his experiments, he examined in particular the merging of both ducts and their physiological significance. The major duodenal papilla is neither part of the experiments in this publication, nor does Vater describe it in detail. Rather, Abraham Vater collects and discusses the knowledge of this anatomical region in his writing.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyse the literature production on application of bibliometrics in nursing research. METHODS: Historical, descriptive, and exploratory bibliometrics analyses were used. The papers were harvested from the Scopus bibliographical database (Elsevier, Maribor, Netherlands), on November 18th, 2018, using the search string bibliometric* in publication titles, abstracts, and keywords, limited to the subject of nursing, for the period 1970 to 2018. FINDINGS: The search resulted in 531 publications with 18 publications removed after manual inspection of publications abstracts. The literature production trend was positive. The nursing specific historical roots appeared only recently. The United States of America and Spain were the most productive countries, and most papers were published in Nutricion Hospitalaria and the Journal of Advanced Nursing. Descriptive analysis, research evaluation, content analysis, citation analyses, and trend analysis in nursing research were the most prolific themes. CONCLUSIONS: Applications of bibliometric in nursing is comparable to bibliometrics use in general, however there are some gaps including the use of altmetrics and of Big Data analysis.

RESUMO

Just over 100 years ago, an article was published describing a plan to treat decubitus ulcers that can shed light upon medical progress and current practices. Key prevention and treatment elements included a dedicated ward, staff continuity, frequent position changes and special surfaces, cleanliness, disinfectants, and dressing changes. The necessity of resource allocation and interdisciplinary collaboration was acknowledged. This article sheds light on not only how much we have learned, but also how far we have to go.

RESUMO

The report, "On a syndrome of radiculoneuritis with hyperalbuminosis of the cerebrospinal fluid without a cellular reaction. Remarks on the clinical characteristics and tracings of the tendon reflexes," published in 1916, included superb longitudinal clinical observations of progressive areflexic paralysis in 2 French soldiers, unique laboratory findings from the still new at that time technique of lumbar puncture, and electrophysiological studies. The classic observation of the albumino-cytologic dissociation in the spinal fluid, even over 100 years later, is still one of the most important laboratory findings used by clinicians to confirm the suspected diagnosis of the Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, typically eponymously referred to as Guillain Barré Syndrome (GBS). The contribution of André Strohl, who reported the electrophysiological abnormalities observed in their patients with novel myographic studies of tendon reflexes, led to eventual widespread use of electrodiagnostic techniques in bedside diagnosis of neuromuscular conditions. Since 1916, the clinicopathological spectrum of GBS has expanded continuously, with better understanding of the etiology, pathology, and electrodiagnostic findings. However, most of the seminal observations and conclusions presented by Guillain, Barré, and Strohl have withstood the test of time. Their landmark publication has become a standard of excellence in the history of clinical neurology. Deservedly, "GBS" is one of the most recognized medical eponyms around the world.

RESUMO

The biological and medical importance of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been recognized for decades. The aim of this bibliometric study is to analyze the quantity and quality of publications in H2S biology and medicine (H2SBM) based on the databases of Web of Science and Google Scholar. A total of 5881 publications published between 1990 and 2016 were analyzed. The number of H2SBM papers published before 2004 was below 100 annually, but thereafter this number rapidly increased and peaked in 2015 with more than 7-fold increase. All publications related to H2SBM research achieved a total h-index of 136 and were cited 123,074 times. The most published disciplines in H2S biomedicine research were the cardiovascular system (8.5%), neuroscience (6.5%), and gastroenterology hepatology (4.7%). The country with the greatest number of publications in the H2SBM research field was the USA with 1765 (30.0%) publications, followed by China with 995 (16.9%) publications and Japan with 555 (9.4%) publications. The top 3 most published institutes were National University of Singapore, Peking University in China, and University of Groningen in Netherlands. Nitric Oxide Biology and Chemistry was the most exploited journal for H2SBM publications with 461 articles, followed by FASEB Journal with 200 publications and Antioxidants Redox Signaling with 116 publications. The most highly cited publications and researchers in H2SBM research were also unmasked from this bibliometric analysis. Collectively, H2SBM publications exhibit a continuous trend of increase, reflecting the increased H2SBM research intensity and diversity globally.

RESUMO

This essay seeks to use the learned surgeon Wilhelm Fabry von Hilden (15601634), better known by the Latinized name of Fabricius Hildanus, to establish links among areas that have so far generally been seen by historians as separate. They include the publication of Observationes chirurgicae, the establishment of a surgical museum, and the collection and publication of several images documenting his activities. Fabricius was among the first to embark on these three endeavors. The essay provides an especially rich account of his museum, including its holdings and in some cases the preservation methods he employed.

RESUMO

This article addresses the development of German social and behavioral aging research during the last 50 years based on four propositions: (a) the development and unfolding of social and behavioral aging research in the 1960s and 1970s was tedious. (b) During the 1980s and 1990s the significance of social and behavioral aging research grew considerably. (c) The last 20 years brought increasing and strong recognition of social and behavioral aging research. (d) Currently, social and behavioral aging research in Germany follows high and internationally established standards, and findings are published in internationally recognized journals. In a resume and outlook the structural aspects, future research topics, funding dynamics, and issues of the application of social and behavioral aging science are discussed.

RESUMO

The current work presents the results of a review of most of the European diaries and travel chronicles containing reports of New World non-human primates dating from the discovery of America in 1492 until the end of the sixteenth century. We report the integral texts translated into English of these literary sources, giving a critical interpretation from a historical and scientific point of view. We note the ways these primates were perceived and described, with attention to the most important characteristics that were highlighted by the first explorers. Ethnotaxonomy and vernacular names used to designate non-human primates are also provided. This new body of knowledge, based largely on empirical reports full of details and first-hand observations, emerged as the first nucleus in the natural history of Neotropical Primates.

RESUMO

Robert T. Paine, who passed away on 13 June 2016, is among the most influential people in the history of ecology. Paine was an experimentalist, a theoretician, a practitioner, and proponent of the "ecology of place," and a deep believer in the importance of natural history to ecological understanding. His scientific legacy grew from the discovery of a link between top-down forcing and species diversity, a breakthrough that led to the ideas of both keystone species and trophic cascades, and to our early understanding of the mosaic nature of biological communities, causes of zonation across physical gradients, and the intermediate-disturbance hypothesis of species diversity. Paine's influence as a mentor was equally important to the growth of ecological thinking, natural resource conservation, and policy. He served ecology as an Ecological Society of America president, an editor of the Society's journals, a member of and contributor to the National Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council, and an in-demand advisor to various state and federal agencies. Paine's broad interests, enthusiasm, charisma, and humor deeply affected our lives and the lives of so many others.

RESUMO

By the 1950s, eugenics had lost its scientific status; it now belonged to the context rather than to the content of science. Interest in the subject was also at low ebb. But that situation would soon change dramatically. Indeed, in an essay-review published in 1993, Philip Pauly commented that a "eugenics industry" had come to rival the "Darwin industry" in importance, although the former seemed less integrated than the latter. Since then, the pace of publication on eugenics, including American eugenics, has only accelerated, while the field has become even more fractured, moving in multiple and even contradictory directions. This essay explores the trajectory of work on the history of American eugenics since interest in the subject revived in the 1960s, noting trends and also fractures. The latter are seen to result partly from the fact that professional historians no longer own the subject, which has attracted the interest of scholars in several other disciplines as well as scientists, political activists, and journalists, and also from the fact that the history of eugenics has almost always been policy-oriented. Historians' desire to be policy-relevant and at the same time attentive to context, complexity, and contingency has generated tensions at several levels: within individuals, among historians, and between professional historians and others who also engage with the history of eugenics. That these tensions are resolved differently by different authors and even by the same authors at different times helps explain why the fragmentation that Pauly noted is not likely to be overcome anytime soon.

RESUMO

During his 20-year career as a surgeon-naturalist with the British East India Company, Francis Buchanan (later Hamilton, known in botany as Buchanan-Hamilton and in ichthyology as Hamilton-Buchanan) undertook pioneering survey explorations in several diverse regions of the Indian subcontinent. A naturalist at heart, his collections of plants and animals are often the first from such regions, notably Nepal, Burma (Myanmar) and Bangladesh. Buchanan had wide-ranging interests beyond natural history, using his talent for observation and meticulous recording to amass a huge body of information on the lands and peoples he encountered. However, much of this information remains unpublished in his survey reports, journals and other manuscripts, and so his role in the building of knowledge for these areas has been under-appreciated. Although a keen and able botanist, it is ironic that his multitudinous botanical discoveries are particularly poorly known, with the vast majority of his material on this subject languishing unpublished in archival collections. These include his original records and working notes which show the methods he used when dealing with 'information overload' and arranging his syntheses ready for publication. Notable is his experimentation with Jussieu's Natural System for classifying his Nepalese plants, and his recognition of biogeographic links of the Nepalese flora with Europe and Japan - both ahead of his fellow countrymen in Britain and India. The life of Francis Buchanan awaits the attention of a biographer who can do justice to his many interests, activities and influences. This is the first of two papers covering his life, providing an empirical baseline for future research and correcting misinformation that abounds in the literature. These papers outline Buchanan's professional career, concentrating on his activities in the exploration of natural history, and placing them in the wider context of botanical research in India.

RESUMO

The word 'periodical' immediately calls to mind huge stacks of bound volumes neatly arranged on library shelves. Yet, in historical terms, it would be hard to claim that 'periodical' is a word endowed with a definite and univocal connotation. Even the criterion of 'periodicity' leaves a lot out of account. Forms historically assumed by periodicals often envisaged regular schedules of appearance, but this was often more of a wish than a reality. Thus, great care needs to be taken in accepting at face value the dating of issues and volumes. Scientific periodicals, whether purely professional or purely commercial (and the many forms in between), existed in given historical circumstances and had to compete with different and alternative forms of publication which were also issued in instalments (especially dictionaries and encyclopaedias). They were not the only or even the preferred vehicle for a scientist to communicate or engage in debate. The role of the reading public, in science as well as in many other matters, was never one of a passive receiver: during the long nineteenth century, in several countries, readers claimed the right to intervene in scientific debates, and favoured publications that appeared to accommodate their demands.
