RESUMO

Sensory stimulation triggers synchronized bioelectrical activity in the brain across various frequencies. This study delves into network-level activities, specifically focusing on local field potentials as a neural signature of visual category representation. Specifically, we studied the role of different local field potential frequency oscillation bands in visual stimulus category representation by presenting images of faces and objects to three monkeys while recording local field potential from inferior temporal cortex. We found category selective local field potential responses mainly for animate, but not inanimate, objects. Notably, face-selective local field potential responses were evident across all tested frequency bands, manifesting in both enhanced (above mean baseline activity) and suppressed (below mean baseline activity) local field potential powers. We observed four different local field potential response profiles based on frequency bands and face selective excitatory and suppressive responses. Low-frequency local field potential bands (1-30 Hz) were more prodominstaly suppressed by face stimulation than the high-frequency (30-170 Hz) local field potential bands. Furthermore, the low-frequency local field potentials conveyed less face category informtion than the high-frequency local field potential in both enhansive and suppressive conditions. Furthermore, we observed a negative correlation between face/object d-prime values in all the tested local field potential frequency bands and the anterior-posterior position of the recording sites. In addition, the power of low-frequency local field potential systematically declined across inferior temporal anterior-posterior positions, whereas high-frequency local field potential did not exhibit such a pattern. In general, for most of the above-mentioned findings somewhat similar results were observed for body, but not, other stimulus categories. The observed findings suggest that a balance of face selective excitation and inhibition across time and cortical space shape face category selectivity in inferior temporal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Although social vulnerability has been associated with worse postoperative and oncologic outcomes in other cancer types, these effects have not been characterized in patients with soft tissue sarcoma. This study evaluated the association of social vulnerability and oncologic outcomes. METHODS: The authors conducted a single-institution cohort study of adult patients with primary and locally recurrent extremity or truncal soft tissue sarcoma undergoing resection between January 2016 and December 2021. The social vulnerability index (SVI) was measured on a low (SVI 1-39%, least vulnerable) to high (60-100%, most vulnerable) SVI scale. The association of SVI with overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazard regression. RESULTS: The study identified 577 patients. The median SVI was 44 (interquartile range [IQR], 19-67), with 195 patients categorized as high SVI and 265 patients as low SVI. The median age, tumor size, histologic subtype, grade, comorbidities, stage, follow-up time, and perioperative chemotherapy and radiation utilization were similar between the high and low SVI cohorts. The patients with high SVI had worse OS (p = 0.07) and RFS (p = 0.016) than the patients with low SVI. High SVI was independently associated with shorter RFS in the multivariate analysis (hazard ratio, 1.64; 95% confidence interval, 1.06-2.54) but not with OS (HR, 1.47; 95% CI 0.84-2.56). CONCLUSION: High community-level social vulnerability appears to be independently associated with worse RFS for patients undergoing resection of extremity and truncal soft tissue sarcoma. The effect of patient and community-level social risk factors should be considered in the treatment of patients with extremity sarcoma.

OBJECTIVE: Although exercise therapy is safe, effective, and recommended as a nonpharmacological treatment for axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), there is a lack of guidelines regarding type and dosage. Insufficient knowledge about physical and physiological variables makes designing effective exercise programs challenging. Therefore, the goal of this study was to simultaneously assess trunk strength, spinal mobility, and the cardiorespiratory fitness of patients with axSpA. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 58 patients with axSpA (mean age 40.8 yrs, 50% male, mean symptom duration 10.3 yrs) performed maximal cervical and trunk mobility and isometric strength tests in all planes (using David Back Concept devices) and a maximal cardiopulmonary bicycle exercise test (n = 25). Mobility and strength data were compared to healthy reference data. Cut-off values for clinical cardiopulmonary exercise testing interpretation were used to judge normality. Patients were compared based on radiographic involvement and symptom duration. RESULTS: Both strength (P ≤ 0.02) and mobility (P ≤ 0.001) were significantly lower for the patients with axSpA compared to the reference. Strength deficits were comparable between the radiographic and nonradiographic groups (P > 0.05, except trunk extension [P = 0.03]), whereas mobility showed higher deficits in the radiographic group (cervical extension [P = 0.02] and rotation [P = 0.01], and trunk extension [P = 0.03] and rotation [P = 0.03]), regardless of symptom duration. Similarly, symptom duration positively affected oxygen pulse (P = 0.03), relative anaerobic threshold (P = 0.02), and aerobic capacity (P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: In patients with axSpA, strength is more affected than mobility when compared to healthy controls. Likewise, mainly the metabolic component of aerobic capacity is impaired, affecting cardiopulmonary fitness. These findings indicate that future personalized exercise programs in patients with axSpA should incorporate exercises for cardiopulmonary fitness next to strength and mobility training.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Noncompressible torso hemorrhage (NCTH) is now considered as the major cause of preventable death after both severe military and civilian trauma. Around 20% of all trauma patients still die from uncontrolled exsanguination along with rapidly evolving hemostatic failure. This review highlights the most recent advances in the field and provides an outline for future research directions. RECENT FINDINGS: The updated definition of NCTH includes a combination of high-grade anatomical torso injury, hemodynamic instability, urgent need for hemorrhage control and aggressive hemostatic resuscitation. Therapeutic concepts consider the following three aspects: control the bleeding source (close the tap), resuscitate to maintain organ perfusion and restore hemostasis (fill the tank), and increase the body's resistance against ischemia (upgrade the armor). SUMMARY: The concepts for the early management of NCTH have substantially evolved over the last decade. The development of new devices and techniques combined with early intervention of hemostatic failure have contributed to more successful resuscitations. Future research needs to refine and validate their potential clinical application.

RESUMO

In this special edition update on soft tissue sarcomas (STS), we cover classifications, emerging technologies, prognostic tools, radiation schemas, and treatment disparities in extremity and truncal STS. We discuss the importance of enhancing local control and reducing complications, including the role of innovative imaging, surgical guidance, and hypofractionated radiation. We review advancements in systemic and immunotherapeutic treatments and introduce disparities seen in this vulnerable population that must be considered to improve overall patient care.

PURPOSE: We examined the effects of acute trunk stretching on central arterial stiffness and central and peripheral blood pressure in middle-aged to older adults. METHODS: Twenty-eight middle-aged to older adults (14M/14F, 72 ± 7 years, 28.5 ± 5.3 kg/m2) completed this randomized, controlled, crossover design trial. We measured carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) and central and peripheral blood pressures (BP) before and after a single bout of passively assisted trunk stretching (i.e., five rounds of six 30-s stretches) and a time-matched seated control visit (i.e., 30-min). Changes (Δ; post - pre) in cf-PWV and central and peripheral BP were compared between visits and sexes using separate linear mixed-effects models controlling for baseline values. RESULTS: Compared with seated control, central (systolic: - 3 ± 7 mmHg; diastolic: - 2 ± 5 mmHg) and peripheral (systolic: - 2 ± 8 mmHg; diastolic: - 1 ± 4 mmHg) BP were reduced following acute trunk stretching (ps ≤ 0.001). Between-visit differences for ∆cf-PWV (stretch: 0.09 ± 0.61 m/s; control: 0.37 ± 0.68 m/s, p = 0.038) were abolished when controlling for change in mean arterial pressure (∆MAP) (p = 0.687). The main effects of sex were detected for changes in systolic BPs (ps ≤ 0.029); more males (n = 13) saw BP reductions than females (n = 7). CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate the superiority of acute trunk stretching over passive sitting of equated duration for BP in middle-aged to older adults, with an appreciable effect in males compared to females.

The objective of this study was to compare the kinematics of the head-neck, torso, pelvis, and lower extremities and document injuries and their patterns to small female occupants in frontal impacts with upright and reclined postures using an experimental model. Six postmortem human surrogates (PMHS) with a mean stature of 154 ± 9.0 cm and mass of 49 ± 12 kg were equally divided between upright and reclined groups (seatback: 25 deg and 45 deg), restrained by a three-point integrated belt, positioned on a semirigid seat, and exposed to low and moderate crash velocities (15 km/h and 32 km/h respectively). The response between the upright and reclined postures was similar in magnitude and curve morphology. While none of the differences were statistically significant, the thoracic spine demonstrated increased downward (+Z) displacement, and the head demonstrated an increased horizontal (+X) displacement for the reclined occupants. In contrast, the upright occupants showed a slightly increased downward (+Z) displacement at the head, but the torso displaced primarily along the +X direction. The posture angles between the two groups were similar at the pelvis and different at the thorax and head. At 32 km/h, both cohorts exhibited multiple rib failure, with upright specimens having a greater number of severe fractures. Although MAIS was the same in both groups, the upright specimens had more bi-cortical rib fractures, suggesting the potential for pneumothorax. This preliminary study may be useful in validating physical (ATDs) and computational (HBMs) surrogates.

Pediatric dermatofibromas are considered rare in young children and have not been well characterized, often misdiagnosed clinically. We performed a retrospective case series of children younger than 18 years with histopathologically diagnosed dermatofibromas at our institutions and evaluated age at onset and diagnosis, sex, lesion location, and size, associated symptoms, change over time, and pre-biopsy diagnosis. Overall, dermatofibromas were most common on the back and chest (20/53; 38%), followed by the legs (15/53; 28%) and arms (12/53; 23%) with the most common pre-biopsy diagnosis of "cyst" (23/53; 43%), followed by dermatofibroma (16/53; 30%), and pilomatricoma (12/53; 23%). Our study reinforces previous findings of truncal predominance of pediatric dermatofibromas, different from adults.

BACKGROUND: Development of vertebrate embryos is characterized by early formation of the anterior tissues followed by the sequential extension of the axis at their posterior end to build the trunk and tail structures, first by the activity of the primitive streak and then of the tail bud. Embryological, molecular and genetic data indicate that head and trunk development are significantly different, suggesting that the transition into the trunk formation stage involves major changes in regulatory gene networks. RESULTS: We explored those regulatory changes by generating differential interaction networks and chromatin accessibility profiles from the posterior epiblast region of mouse embryos at embryonic day (E)7.5 and E8.5. We observed changes in various cell processes, including several signaling pathways, ubiquitination machinery, ion dynamics and metabolic processes involving lipids that could contribute to the functional switch in the progenitor region of the embryo. We further explored the functional impact of changes observed in Wnt signaling associated processes, revealing a switch in the functional relevance of Wnt molecule palmitoleoylation, essential during gastrulation but becoming differentially required for the control of axial extension and progenitor differentiation processes during trunk formation. We also found substantial changes in chromatin accessibility at the two developmental stages, mostly mapping to intergenic regions and presenting differential footprinting profiles to several key transcription factors, indicating a significant switch in the regulatory elements controlling head or trunk development. Those chromatin changes are largely independent of retinoic acid, despite the key role of this factor in the transition to trunk development. We also tested the functional relevance of potential enhancers identified in the accessibility assays that reproduced the expression profiles of genes involved in the transition. Deletion of these regions by genome editing had limited effect on the expression of those genes, suggesting the existence of redundant enhancers that guarantee robust expression patterns. CONCLUSIONS: This work provides a global view of the regulatory changes controlling the switch into the axial extension phase of vertebrate embryonic development. It also revealed mechanisms by which the cellular context influences the activity of regulatory factors, channeling them to implement one of several possible biological outputs.

Accurate assessment of rolling resistance is important for wheelchair propulsion analyses. However, the commonly used drag and deceleration tests are reported to underestimate rolling resistance up to 6% due to the (neglected) influence of trunk motion. The first aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of using trunk and wheelchair kinematics to predict the intra-cyclical load distribution, more particularly front wheel loading, during hand-rim wheelchair propulsion. Secondly, the study compared the accuracy of rolling resistance determined from the predicted load distribution with the accuracy of drag test-based rolling resistance. Twenty-five able-bodied participants performed hand-rim wheelchair propulsion on a large motor-driven treadmill. During the treadmill sessions, front wheel load was assessed with load pins to determine the load distribution between the front and rear wheels. Accordingly, a machine learning model was trained to predict front wheel load from kinematic data. Based on two inertial sensors (attached to the trunk and wheelchair) and the machine learning model, front wheel load was predicted with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.8% (or 1.8 kg). Rolling resistance determined from the predicted load distribution (MAE: 0.9%, mean error (ME): 0.1%) was more accurate than drag test-based rolling resistance (MAE: 2.5%, ME: -1.3%).

Trunk strength plays a vital role in athletic performance, rehabilitation and general health, however, current assessment methods are expensive, non-portable or unreliable. This study aimed to investigate the within- and between-session reliability, variability, standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change (MDC) of trunk strength in the sagittal (flexion and extension) and frontal planes (left and right lateral flexion) using a fixed digital dynamometer. Eighteen participants (ten men and eight women) attended two sessions separated by 7 days. Participants were fitted with a trunk harness which was secured to an immovable base via a digital dynamometer. Three maximal voluntary isometric contractions were completed across four positions (prone, supine, left-side recumbent and right-side recumbent, respectively) on a glute-hamstring raise machine. All positions demonstrated excellent reliability and low variability within session (ICC: 0.95-0.98; CV: 5-7%) and between sessions (ICC: 0.98-0.99; CV: 4-6%), across all positions. The between-session MDC ranged from 8% (prone) to 13% (right-side recumbent), translating to absolute values between 2.9 and 3.2 kg across all positions. Maximal isometric force testing using a fixed digital dynamometer provides reliable measurements of multiplanar trunk strength, providing a practical method for use in clinical practice.

This study aimed to investigate inter- and intra-athlete technique variability in pre-elite and elite Australian fast bowlers delivering new ball conventional swing bowling. Ball grip angle and pelvis, torso, shoulder, elbow, wrist, upper arm, forearm, and hand kinematics were investigated at the point of ball release for inswing and outswing deliveries. Descriptive evaluations of group and individual data and k-means cluster analyses were used to assess inter- and intra-bowler technique variability. Inter-athlete technique and ball grip variability were identified, demonstrating that skilled bowlers use individualised strategies to generate swing. Functional movement variability was demonstrated by intra-athlete variability in successful swing bowling trials. Bowlers demonstrated stable technique parameters in large proximal body segments of the pelvis and torso, providing a level of repeatability to their bowling action. Greater variation was observed in bowling arm kinematics, allowing athletes to manipulate the finger and ball position to achieve the desired seam orientation at the point of ball release. This study demonstrates that skilled bowlers use individualised techniques and grips to generate swing and employ technique variations in successive deliveries. Coaches should employ individualised training strategies and use constraints-led approaches in training environments to encourage bowlers to seek adaptive movement solutions to generate swing.

Unanticipated trunk perturbation is commonly observed when anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries occur during direction-changing manoeuvres. This study aimed to quantify the effect of mid-flight medial-lateral external trunk perturbation directions/locations on ACL loading variables during sidestep cuttings. Thirty-two recreational athletes performed sidestep cuttings under combinations of three perturbation directions (no-perturbation, ipsilateral-perturbation, and contralateral-perturbation relative to the cutting leg) and two perturbation locations (upper-trunk versus lower-trunk). The pushing perturbation was created by customised devices releasing a slam ball to contact participants near maximum jump height prior to cutting. Perturbation generally resulted in greater peak vertical ground reaction force and slower cutting velocity. Upper-trunk contralateral perturbation showed the greatest lateral trunk bending away from the travel direction, greatest peak knee flexion and abduction angles, and greatest peak internal knee adduction moments compared to other conditions. Such increased ACL loading variables were likely due to the increased lateral trunk bending and whole-body horizontal velocity away from the cutting direction caused by the contralateral perturbation act at the upper trunk. The findings may help understand the mechanisms of indirect contact ACL injuries and develop effective cutting techniques for ACL injury prevention.

The purpose was to compare two non-laboratory based running retraining programs on lower limb and trunk kinematics in recreational runners. Seventy recreational runners (30 ± 7.3 years old, 40% female) were randomised to a barefoot running group (BAR), a group wearing a digital metronome with their basal cadence increased by 10% (CAD), and a control group (CON). BAR and CAD groups included intervals from 15 to 40 min over 10 weeks and 3 days/week. 3D sagittal kinematics of the ankle, knee, hip, pelvis, and trunk were measured before and after the retraining program, at comfortable and high speeds. A 3 × 2 mixed ANOVA revealed that BAR and CAD groups increased knee and hip flexion at footstrike, increased peak hip flexion during stance and flight phase, decreased peak hip extension during flight phase, and increased anterior pelvic tilt at both speeds after retraining. In addition, BAR increased ankle plantar flexion at footstrike and increased anterior trunk tilt. Both retraining programs demonstrated significant moderate to large effect size changes in parameters that could reduce the mechanical risks of injury associated with excessive knee stress, which is of interest to coaches, runners and those prescribing rehabilitation and injury prevention programs.

RESUMO

For individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) above the midthoracic level, a common complication is the partial or complete loss of trunk stability in the seated position. Functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) can restore seated posture and other motor functions after paralysis by applying small electrical currents to the peripheral motor nerves. In particular, the Networked Neuroprosthesis (NNP) is a fully implanted, modular FNS system that is also capable of capturing information from embedded accelerometers for measuring trunk tilt for feedback control of stimulation. The NNP modules containing the accelerometers are located in the body based on surgical constraints. As such, their exact orientations are generally unknown and cannot be easily assessed. In this study, a method for estimating trunk tilt that employed the Gram-Schmidt method to reorient acceleration signals to the anatomical axes of the body was developed and deployed in individuals with SCI using the implanted NNP system. An anatomically realistic model of a human trunk and five accelerometer sensors was developed to verify the accuracy of the reorientation algorithm. Correlation coefficients and root mean square errors (RMSEs) were calculated to compare target trunk tilt estimates and tilt estimates derived from simulated accelerometer signals under a variety of conditions. Simulated trunk tilt estimates with correlation coefficients above 0.92 and RMSEs below 5° were achieved. The algorithm was then applied to accelerometer signals from implanted sensors installed in three NNP recipients. Error analysis was performed by comparing the correlation coefficients and RMSEs derived from trunk tilt estimates calculated from implanted sensor signals to those calculated via motion capture data, which served as the gold standard. NNP-derived trunk tilt estimates exhibited correlation coefficients between 0.80 and 0.95 and RMSEs below 13° for both pitch and roll in most cases. These findings suggest that the algorithm is effective at estimating trunk tilt with the implanted sensors of the NNP system, which implies that the method may be appropriate for extracting feedback signals for control systems for seated stability with NNP technology for individuals who have reduced control of their trunk due to paralysis.

Multiple myeloma (MM) patients complain of pain and stiffness limiting motility. To determine if patients can benefit from vertebroplasty, we assessed muscle activation and co-activation before and after surgery. Five patients with MM and five healthy controls performed sitting-to-standing and lifting tasks. Patients performed the task before and one month after surgery. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was recorded bilaterally over the erector spinae longissimus and rectus abdominis superior muscles to evaluate the trunk muscle activation and co-activation and their mean, maximum, and full width at half maximum were evaluated. Statistical analyses were performed to compare MM patients before and after the surgery, MM and healthy controls and to investigate any correlations between the muscle's parameters and the severity of pain in patients. The results reveal increased activations and co-activations after vertebroplasty as well as in comparison with healthy controls suggesting how MM patients try to control the trunk before and after vertebroplasty surgery. The findings confirm the beneficial effects of vertebral consolidation on the pain experienced by the patient, despite an overall increase in trunk muscle activation and co-activation. Therefore, it is important to provide patients with rehabilitation treatment early after surgery to facilitate the CNS to correctly stabilize the spine without overloading it with excessive co-activations.

Excessive stride variability is a characteristic feature of cerebellar ataxias, even in pre-ataxic or prodromal disease stages. This study explores the relation of variability of arm swing and trunk deflection in relationship to stride length and gait speed in previously described cohorts of cerebellar disease and healthy elderly: we examined 10 patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 14 (SCA), 12 patients with essential tremor (ET), and 67 healthy elderly (HE). Using inertial sensors, recordings of gait performance were conducted at different subjective walking speeds to delineate gait parameters and respective coefficients of variability (CoV). Comparisons across cohorts and walking speed categories revealed slower stride velocities in SCA and ET patients compared to HE, which was paralleled by reduced arm swing range of motion (RoM), peak velocity, and increased CoV of stride length, while no group differences were found for trunk deflections and their variability. Larger arm swing RoM, peak velocity, and stride length were predicted by higher gait velocity in all cohorts. Lower gait velocity predicted higher CoV values of trunk sagittal and horizontal deflections, as well as arm swing and stride length in ET and SCA patients, but not in HE. These findings highlight the role of arm movements in ataxic gait and the impact of gait velocity on variability, which are essential for defining disease manifestation and disease-related changes in longitudinal observations.

Trunk compensatory movements frequently manifest during robotic-assisted arm reaching exercises for upper limb rehabilitation following a stroke, potentially impeding functional recovery. These aberrant movements are prevalent among stroke survivors and can hinder their progress in rehabilitation, making it crucial to address this issue. This study evaluated the efficacy of visual feedback, facilitated by an RGB-D camera, in reducing trunk compensation. In total, 17 able-bodied individuals and 18 stroke survivors performed reaching tasks under unrestricted trunk conditions and visual feedback conditions. In the visual feedback modalities, the target position was synchronized with trunk movement at ratios where the target moved at the same speed, double, and triple the trunk's motion speed, providing real-time feedback to the participants. Notably, trunk compensatory movements were significantly diminished when the target moved at the same speed and double the trunk's motion speed. Furthermore, these conditions exhibited an increase in the task completion time and perceived exertion among stroke survivors. This outcome suggests that visual feedback effectively heightened the task difficulty, thereby discouraging unnecessary trunk motion. The findings underscore the pivotal role of customized visual feedback in correcting aberrant upper limb movements among stroke survivors, potentially contributing to the advancement of robotic-assisted rehabilitation strategies. These insights advocate for the integration of visual feedback into rehabilitation exercises, highlighting its potential to foster more effective recovery pathways for post-stroke individuals by minimizing undesired compensatory motions.

ABSTRACT: Sakurai, M, Qiao, M, Szymanski, DJ, and Crotin, RL. Countermovement jump and momentum generation associations to fastball velocity performance among Division I collegiate pitchers. J Strength Cond Res 38(7): 1288-1294, 2024-The current study explored the relationships between countermovement jump (CMJ) profiles and baseball pitching performance. Nineteen Division I collegiate pitchers performed in-laboratory pitching and bilateral CMJs. Whole-body kinematics and ground reaction force were collected during both pitching and CMJ evaluations. Statistically significant correlations of concentric impulse and peak power in the CMJ test with fastball velocity were observed (r = 0.71 and 0.68). Concentric impulse in CMJ also showed a statistically significant correlation with linear momentum in the anterior-posterior direction during pitching (r = 0.68). Lean body mass and body mass showed statistically significant correlations with both of the 2 linear momentums during pitching (r = 0.71∼0.83), and concentric impulse in CMJ (r = 0.71 and 0.81). Pelvis and trunk pitching mechanics did not correlate with any of the CMJ variables at the statistically significant level, whereas the direction of the correlations varied (|r| < 0.45). Assessment of a baseball pitcher's CMJ should focus on concentric impulse and peak power because only these showed meaningful relationships with fastball velocity or momentum generation during pitching. An increase in lean body mass is also suggested to be able to generate more impulse and momentum. Baseball coaches, strength coaches, and clinicians are encouraged to include lower-body explosive training to enhance the force and power output capacity of baseball pitchers.

Knowledge gaps exist on association between law enforcement officer (LEO) anthropometric characteristics and perceived body armour fit, armour discomfort, and armour-caused pain. This study assessed the correlation and identified influential torso dimensions for armour sizing and design applications. Nine-hundreds and seventy-four LEOs across the U.S. participated in a national study on LEO armour use and body dimensions. Perceived ratings of armour fit, armour discomfort, and body pain were found moderately correlated with each other. In addition, armour fit ratings were associated with certain torso anthropometric characteristics, such as chest circumference, chest breadth, chest depth, waist circumference, waist breadth (sitting), waist front length (sitting), body weight, and body mass index. LEOs who reported armour poor fit, armour discomfort, and armour-caused pain had a larger mean of body dimensions than the "armor good fit" group. More women than men had poor fit, discomfort, and body pain in the use of body armour.Practitioner summary: The identified influential body measurements can be used as the "drivers" for multivariate analyses to develop an improved armour sizing system to further LEO protection. The study also suggests consideration of gender specific armour sizing systems to accommodate differences in torso configurations between male and female officers and to resolve the concern that more female officers had poor armour fit than male officers.
