Pharmacologic interventions for type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

A variety of pharmacologic interventions are available to treat people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This article provides an update of pharmacologic interventions for diabetes, including a discussion of the drug classifications with specific examples of each, and their background, dosing, and side effects. Combination therapy is reviewed, and information is provided on two new therapeutic classes of diabetes medications: incretin mimetics and antihyperglycemics.
