ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:

In the 2016 ESPGHAN recommendations on how to deal with hepatitis E virus infection in immunocompromised children, patients treated with chemotherapy were not specifically mentioned. OBSERVATIONS Two teenagers treated with chemotherapy for acute leukemia and medulloblastoma, respectively, were diagnosed with hepatic cytolysis. After numerous investigations hepatitis E was found, limiting the good progress of the chemotherapy treatment.

CONCLUSION:

In the case of liver cytolysis in immunocompromised children treated with chemotherapy, hepatitis E virus infection has to be promptly diagnosed.
