Christmas disease (haemophilia B.)

Golding, John S. R; Stafford, John L.
West Indian med. j ; 4(3): 188-92, Sept. 1955.
Article in English | MedCarib | ID: med-12929
A case of Christmas disease occuring in a 12 year old boy is recorded. It is the first such case to be reported in Jamaica and, apparently, the first mention of its incidence in a Negro. This recently discovered disease is now recognized to be the cause of the bleeding tendency in 10-20 percent of patients who hitherto thought to be suffering from haemophilia. The disease responds to replacement by fresh or stored blood of the missing serum factor but, as in classical haemophilia, the bleeding tendency can only temporarily be controlled. The literature of these so-called thromboplastin-precursor deficiency states is briefly reviewed. (AU)
