RESUMEN

The antibacterial effects of a selection of volatile fatty acids (acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, and caproic acids) relevant to anaerobic digestion were investigated at 1, 2 and 4 g/L. The antibacterial effects were characterised by the dynamics of Enterococcus faecalis NCTC 00775, Escherichia coli JCM 1649 and Klebsiella pneumoniae A17. Mesophilic anaerobic incubation to determine the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and median lethal concentration of the VFAs was carried out in Luria Bertani broth at 37 °C for 48 h. Samples collected at times 0, 3, 6, 24 and 48 h were used to monitor bacterial kinetics and pH. VFAs at 4 g/L demonstrated the highest bactericidal effect (p < 0.05), while 1 g/L supported bacterial growth. The VFA cocktail was the most effective, while propionic acid was the least effective. Enterococcus faecalis NCTC 00775 was the most resistant strain with the VFAs MBC of 4 g/L, while Klebsiella pneumoniae A17 was the least resistant with the VFAs MBC of 2 g/L. Allowing a 48 h incubation period led to more log decline in the bacterial numbers compared to earlier times. The VFA cocktail, valeric, and caproic acids at 4 g/L achieved elimination of the three bacteria strains, with over 7 log10 decrease within 48 h.

Hydrothermal vents are geographically widespread and host microorganisms with robust enzymes useful in various industrial applications. We examined microbial communities and carboxylesterases of two terrestrial hydrothermal vents of the volcanic island of Ischia (Italy) predominantly composed of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidota. High-temperature enrichment cultures with the polyester plastics polyhydroxybutyrate and polylactic acid (PLA) resulted in an increase of Thermus and Geobacillus species and to some extent Fontimonas and Schleiferia species. The screening at 37 to 70°C of metagenomic fosmid libraries from above enrichment cultures identified three hydrolases (IS10, IS11, and IS12), all derived from yet-uncultured Chloroflexota and showing low sequence identity (33 to 56%) to characterized enzymes. Enzymes expressed in Escherichia coli exhibited maximal esterase activity at 70 to 90°C, with IS11 showing the highest thermostability (90% activity after 20-min incubation at 80°C). IS10 and IS12 were highly substrate promiscuous and hydrolyzed all 51 monoester substrates tested. Enzymes were active with PLA, polyethylene terephthalate model substrate, and mycotoxin T-2 (IS12). IS10 and IS12 had a classical α/ß-hydrolase core domain with a serine hydrolase catalytic triad (Ser155, His280, and Asp250) in their hydrophobic active sites. The crystal structure of IS11 resolved at 2.92 Å revealed the presence of a N-terminal ß-lactamase-like domain and C-terminal lipocalin domain. The catalytic cleft of IS11 included catalytic Ser68, Lys71, Tyr160, and Asn162, whereas the lipocalin domain enclosed the catalytic cleft like a lid and contributed to substrate binding. Our study identified novel thermotolerant carboxylesterases with a broad substrate range, including polyesters and mycotoxins, for potential applications in biotechnology. IMPORTANCE High-temperature-active microbial enzymes are important biocatalysts for many industrial applications, including recycling of synthetic and biobased polyesters increasingly used in textiles, fibers, coatings and adhesives. Here, we identified three novel thermotolerant carboxylesterases (IS10, IS11, and IS12) from high-temperature enrichment cultures from Ischia hydrothermal vents and incubated with biobased polymers. The identified metagenomic enzymes originated from uncultured Chloroflexota and showed low sequence similarity to known carboxylesterases. Active sites of IS10 and IS12 had the largest effective volumes among the characterized prokaryotic carboxylesterases and exhibited high substrate promiscuity, including hydrolysis of polyesters and mycotoxin T-2 (IS12). Though less promiscuous than IS10 and IS12, IS11 had a higher thermostability with a high temperature optimum (80 to 90°C) for activity and hydrolyzed polyesters, and its crystal structure revealed an unusual lipocalin domain likely involved in substrate binding. The polyesterase activity of these enzymes makes them attractive candidates for further optimization and potential application in plastics recycling.

PURPOSE: The main objective of this work is to present an updated review of the different surgical procedures for the correction of residual refractive errors following deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) surgery. METHODS: A review of the literature was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. The search was conducted in January 2022 and was limited to articles published in peer-reviewed journals. The information extracted from each publication included sample size, mean follow-up time, pre- and post-operative uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), pre- and post-operative refraction and spherical equivalent (SE), safety and efficacy indexes and complications. RESULTS: Residual ametropias, mainly high astigmatism and myopia, and the resulting anisometropia are likely to occur following DALK. They become a limiting factor and may lead to unsatisfactory visual restoration, therefore affecting patients' quality of vision and life. Alternative surgical interventions may be required to treat this residual ametropia, such as corneal refractive surgery or intraocular lens implantation. A total of 47 relevant articles were studied in detail. Different refractive surgery techniques have been shown to be effective and safe for the correction of ametropia following the DALK procedure and to improve the patient's quality of vision, although more research is needed to confirm long-term results. CONCLUSION: The final refractive technique will depend on different factors, such as the amount of ametropia, the condition of the cornea or the patient's individual needs, economics, and occupational demands.

BACKGROUND: A young boy presented with acute ethmoiditis and recurrent periorbital swelling. The periorbital swelling was confirmed to be caused by a rare condition. CASE PRESENTATION: Debut symptoms were acute rhinitis, unilateral periorbital swelling, fatigue, and swelling in the temple region, probably caused by an insect bite. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the sinuses showed bilateral ethmoiditis and unilateral periorbital cellulitis without subperiostal abscess formation, and antibiotics were prescribed. Because of recurrence of the periorbital swelling, an interdisciplinary team started an investigation for a differential diagnosis. The infestation of Hypoderma tarandi was confirmed by recent history of hiking in reindeer habitat, typical clinical presentation and detection of IgG hypodermin C antibodies. INTERPRETATION: Human myiasis by Hypoderma tarandi is a rare condition in Norway. Typical clinical signs are unaffected general condition, migration of swelling in the forehead, recurrent unilateral periorbital swelling and normal CRP levels. Early-stage diagnosis and treatment will contribute to rapid symptom relief and prevent rare eye and intracranial complications. This case illustrates the importance of investigation for other conditions when the disease course is unexpected. The authors emphasise that knowledge about this disease is important in a variety of medical specialties.

Pathogenic RIPK1 variants have been described as the cause of two different inborn errors of immunity. Biallelic loss-of-function variants cause the recessively inherited RIPK1 deficiency, while monoallelic variants impairing the caspase-8-mediated RIPK1 cleavage provoke a novel autoinflammatory disease (AID) called cleavage-resistant RIPK1-induced autoinflammatory (CRIA) syndrome. The aim of this study was to characterize the pathogenicity of two novel RIPK1 variants located at the cleavage site of caspase-8 detected in patients with dominantly-inherited, early-onset undefined AID. RIPK1 genotyping was performed by Sanger and next-generation sequencing. Clinical and analytical data were collected from medical charts, and in silico and in vitro assays were performed to evaluate the functional consequences. Genetic analyses identified two novel heterozygous RIPK1 variants at the caspase-8 cleavage site (p.Leu321Arg and p.Asp324Gly), which displayed a perfect intrafamilial phenotype-genotype segregation following a dominant inheritance pattern. Structural analyses suggested that these variants disrupt the normal RIPK1 structure, probably making it less accessible to and/or less cleavable by caspase-8. In vitro experiments confirmed that the p.Leu321Arg and p.Asp324Gly RIPK1 variants were resistant to caspase-8-mediated cleavage and induced a constitutive activation of necroptotic pathway in a similar manner that previously characterized RIPK1 variants causing CRIA syndrome. All these results strongly supported the pathogenicity of the two novel RIPK1 variants and the diagnosis of CRIA syndrome in all enrolled patients. Moreover, the evidences here collected expand the phenotypic and genetic diversity of this recently described AID, and provide interesting data about effectiveness of treatments that may benefit future patients.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this work was to analyze, in an in vitro model, the possible protective effects of ultraviolet- (UV-) or UV/blue-filtering intraocular lens (IOL) under light-emitting diode (LED) lighting conditions. METHODS: Ten models of IOLs were evaluated. Light transmission spectrum was recorded from 300 to 800 nm, in steps of 1 nm. Photodamage in vitro model was induced in ARPE-19 cells by blue LED light (465-475 nm). Changes in cell viability and oxidative stress variables were studied to assess the protective effect of IOLs. RESULTS: UV/blue-filtering IOLs models block blue light spectrum in different proportion and UV-filtering IOLs blocking wavelength below 400 nm. However, in vitro study under blue LED light exposure does not show protective effects related with mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress of UV/blue-filtering IOLs. CONCLUSIONS: The current in vitro study suggests that UV/blue filtering IOLs are not useful in terms of photoprotection in artificial light conditions. The results obtained indicate that it is needed to give attention to other IOL parameters besides the type of filter, as it seems they could have influence on the protective role.

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema is a common inflammatory skin disorder. Health care providers need continuously updated information about the management of hand eczema to ensure best treatment for their patients. OBJECTIVES: To update the European Society of Contact Dermatitis guideline on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment on of hand eczema. METHOD: The Guideline Development Group (GDG) was established on behalf of the ESCD. A call for interest was launched via the ESCD website and via the ESCD members' mailing list. Appraisal of the evidence for therapeutic and preventive interventions was applied and a structured method of developing consensus was used and moderated by an external methodologist. The final guideline was approved by the ESCD executive committee and was in external review on the ESCD webpage for 1 month. RESULTS: Consensus was achieved for several statements and management strategies. CONCLUSION: The updated guideline should improve management of hand eczema.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies firefighting as possibly carcinogenic to humans, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as carcinogens with sufficient evidence for development of melanoma in humans. We present a case report of a firefighter with melanoma and history of 33 years of occupational exposure. Based on the available epidemiological and toxicological evidence of association between being a firefighter and developing melanoma, melanoma was recognized by the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Service as an occupational disease in our patient. In 2017, melanoma was acknowledged as an occupational disease in only 8 out of 28 surveyed European countries. Melanoma should be considered as a possible occupational disease among firefighters with a history of relevant exposure. Further recognition of the occupational exposures leading to increased risk of melanoma is still needed for preventive purposes.

Proteases are abundant in prokaryotic genomes (~10 per genome), but their recovery encounters expression problems, as only 1% can be produced at high levels; this value differs from that of similarly abundant esterases (1-15 per genome), 50% of which can be expressed at good levels. Here, we design a catalytically efficient artificial protease that can be easily produced. The PluriZyme EH1AB1 with two active sites supporting the esterase activity was employed. A Leu24Cys mutation in EH1AB1, remodelled one of the esterase sites into a proteolytic one through the incorporation of a catalytic dyad (Cys24 and His214). The resulting artificial enzyme, EH1AB1C, efficiently hydrolysed (azo)casein at pH 6.5-8.0 and 60-70 °C. The presence of both esterase and protease activities in the same scaffold allowed the one-pot cascade synthesis (55.0 ± 0.6% conversion, 24 h) of L-histidine methyl ester from the dipeptide L-carnosine in the presence of methanol. This study demonstrates that active sites supporting proteolytic activity can be artificially introduced into an esterase scaffold to design easy-to-produce in-one protease-esterase PluriZymes for cascade reactions, namely, the synthesis of amino acid esters from dipeptides. It is also possible to design artificial proteases with good production yields, in contrast to natural proteases that are difficult to express.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term outcomes of femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (Femto-LASIK) to correct residual astigmatism after deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK). Methods: This retrospective case series study included 10 eyes that underwent Femto-LASIK after a DALK. The refractive error, uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, thinnest corneal thickness (TCT), and central corneal thickness (CCT) were registered. The postoperative follow-up ranged between 36 and 60 months. Results: All surgeries were uneventful, with no intra- or postoperative complications. The mean UDVA (Snellen scale) rose from 0.13 ± 0.05 to 0.47 ± 0.15 six months after Femto-LASIK (p < 0.001). All cases experienced a significant improvement in UDVA. None of the eyes lost lines of CDVA, and seven eyes (70%) improved the CDVA compared to preoperative values. The refractive cylinder changed from a preoperative value of −3.88 ± 1.00 D to −0.93 ± 0.39 six months after Femto-LASIK (p < 0.0001). In eight eyes (80%), the UDVA and refractive outcomes remained stable at postoperative follow-up visits. In contrast, one eye experienced a refractive regression over the follow-up. TCT and CCT were stable at the different postoperative follow-up visits. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that Femto-LASIK might safely and effectively corrects residual astigmatism after DALK. Despite these encouraging results, further long-term studies, including a larger number of cases, are required to confirm the safety of the procedure. The refractive stability in eyes with prior RK might be lower than for other DALK indications.

Engineering dual-function single polypeptide catalysts with two abiotic or biotic catalytic entities (or combinations of both) supporting cascade reactions is becoming an important area of enzyme engineering and catalysis. Herein we present the development of a PluriZyme, TR2 E2 , with efficient native transaminase (kcat : 69.49±1.77 min-1 ) and artificial esterase (kcat : 3908-0.41 min-1 ) activities integrated into a single scaffold, and evaluate its utility in a cascade reaction. TR2 E2 (pHopt : 8.0-9.5; Topt : 60-65 °C) efficiently converts methyl 3-oxo-4-(2,4,5-trifluorophenyl)butanoate into 3-(R)-amino-4-(2,4,5-trifluorophenyl)butanoic acid, a crucial intermediate for the synthesis of antidiabetic drugs. The reaction proceeds through the conversion of the ß-keto ester into the ß-keto acid at the hydrolytic site and subsequently into the ß-amino acid (e.e. >99 %) at the transaminase site. The catalytic power of the TR2 E2 PluriZyme was proven with a set of ß-keto esters, demonstrating the potential of such designs to address bioinspired cascade reactions.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to identify case definitions of diagnostic criteria for specific musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) for use in occupational healthcare, surveillance or research. METHODS: A scoping review was performed in Medline and Web of Science from 2000 to 2020 by an international team of researchers and clinicians, using the Arksey and O'Malley framework to identify case definitions based on expert consensus or a synthesis of the literature. Seven MSDs were considered: non-specific low back pain (LBP), lumbosacral radicular syndrome (LRS), subacromial pain syndrome (SAPS), carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), lateral or medial elbow tendinopathy, and knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA). Case definitions for occupational healthcare or research were charted according to symptoms, signs and instrumental assessment of signs, and if reported, on work-related exposure criteria. RESULTS: In total, 2404 studies were identified of which 39 were included. Fifteen studies (38%) reported on non-specific LBP, followed by knee OA (n = 8;21%) and CTS (n = 8;21%). For non-specific LBP, studies agreed in general on which symptoms (i.e., pain in lower back) and signs (i.e., absence of red flags) constituted a case definition while for the other MSDs considerable heterogeneity was found. Only two studies (5%), describing case definitions for LBP, CTS, and SAPS and lateral and medial elbow tendinopathy respectively, included work-related exposure criteria in their clinical assessment. CONCLUSION: We found that studies on non-specific LBP agreed in general on which symptoms and signs constitute a case definition, while considerable heterogeneity was found for the other MSDs. For prevention of work-related MSDs, these MSD case definitions should preferably include work-related exposure criteria.

BACKGROUND: International consensus is needed on case definitions of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and diseases (MSDs) for use in epidemiological research. We aim to: 1) study what information is needed for the case definition of work-related low back pain (LBP), lumbosacral radicular syndrome (LRS), subacromial pain syndrome (SAPS), carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), lateral and medial elbow tendinopathy, and knee and hip osteoarthritis, and to 2) seek consensus among occupational health professionals/researchers regarding the case definitions of these work-related MSDs. METHODS: A two-round Delphi study was conducted with occupational health professionals/researchers from 24 countries. Definition of work-related MSDs were composed of a case definition with work exposures. Round 1 included 32 case definitions and round 2, 60 case definitions. After two rounds, consensus required 75% of the panellists to rate a case definition including work exposures ≥7 points on a 9-point rating scale (completely disagree/completely agree). RESULTS: Fifty-eight panellists completed both rounds (response rate 90%). Forty-five (70%) panellists thought that for LBP a case definition can be based on symptoms only. Consensus was only reached for work-related medial elbow tendinopathy, while the lowest agreement was found for knee osteoarthritis. Where consensus was not reached, this was - except for LBP - related to physical examination and imaging rather than disagreement on key symptoms. CONCLUSION: Consensus on case definitions was reached only for work-related medial elbow tendinopathy. Epidemiological research would benefit from harmonized case definitions for all MSDs including imaging and physical examination for LRS, SAPS, CTS, lateral elbow tendinopathy and hip and knee osteoarthritis.

PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness, safety and predictability of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) in eyes with shallow anterior chamber (AC). METHODS: This is a prospective consecutive clinical study. All eyes presented an anterior chamber depth (ACD) ≤ 2.1 mm and were submitted to FLACS with monofocal intraocular lens (mIOL) or trifocal intraocular lens (tIOL) implantation. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (VA) and corrected distance VA values were used to assess efficacy and safety of the surgery. Refraction, intraocular pressure (IOP), endothelial cell density (ECD) and ACD were evaluated before and 6 months post-surgery. RESULTS: Phacoemulsification was carried out successfully in all eyes, without intra- or postoperative complications. Efficacy and safety indexes were 0.96 and 1.26 for the mIOL group, and 0.87 and 1.01 for the tIOL group, respectively. The mean postoperative spherical equivalent was - 0.06 ± 0.28D and - 0.14 ± 0.38D for the mIOL and tIOL groups, respectively. The ECD varied from 2470 ± 483 to 2009 ± 538 cells/mm2 (p < 0.05) and from 2443 ± 319 to 2245 ± 628 cells/mm2 (p = 0.06) for the mIOL and tIOL groups, respectively. IOP significantly decreased (p < 0.05) after the surgery from 14.34 to 12.85 mmHg for the mIOL group and from 14.37 to 11.91 mmHg for the tIOL group, with a general reduction of medical hypotensive treatment in both groups (85% of cases required ≤ number of medications). ACD changed significantly (p < 0.05) from 1.96 ± 0.15 mm to 3.75 ± 0.30 mm after the surgery in the mIOL group and from 1.94 ± 0.15 mm to 3.23 ± 0.21 mm for the tIOL group. CONCLUSION: FLACS with implantation of either mIOL or tIOL may provide good efficacy, safety and predictability in eyes with shallow AC.

BACKGROUND: Multi-morbidity and polypharmacy increase the risk of non-trivial adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in older people during hospitalization. Despite this, there are no established interventions for hospital-acquired ADR prevention. METHODS: We undertook a pragmatic, multi-national, parallel arm prospective randomized open-label, blinded endpoint (PROBE) controlled trial enrolling patients at six European medical centres. We randomized 1,537 older medical and surgical patients with multi-morbidity and polypharmacy on admission in a 1:1 ratio to SENATOR software-guided medication optimization plus standard care (intervention, n = 772, mean number of daily medications = 9.34) or standard care alone (control, n = 765, mean number of daily medications = 9.23) using block randomization stratified by site and admission type. Attending clinicians in the intervention arm received SENATOR-generated advice at a single time point with recommendations they could choose to adopt or not. The primary endpoint was occurrence of probable or certain ADRs within 14 days of randomization. Secondary endpoints were primary endpoint derivatives; tertiary endpoints included all-cause mortality, re-hospitalization, composite healthcare utilization and health-related quality of life. RESULTS: For the primary endpoint, there was no difference between the intervention and control groups (24.5 vs. 24.8%; OR 0.98; 95% CI 0.77-1.24; P = 0.88). Similarly, with secondary and tertiary endpoints, there were no significant differences. Among attending clinicians in the intervention group, implementation of SENATOR software-generated medication advice points was poor (~15%). CONCLUSIONS: In this trial, uptake of software-generated medication advice to minimize ADRs was poor and did not reduce ADR incidence during index hospitalization.

PURPOSE: To evaluate distance, intermediate, and near visual performance in patients implanted with a trifocal aspheric presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS: Forty patients were bilaterally implanted with the AcrySofIQ PanOptix IOL after femtosecond laser-assisted lens surgery. Binocular best corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) (4 m), best distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA) (40 and 30 cm), best corrected distance intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA) (70, 60, and 50 cm), binocular distance contrast sensitivity under photopic conditions (85 cd/m2), and defocus curves were evaluated at 6-months. RESULTS: Six months postoperatively, the mean binocular Snellen decimal CDVA and DCNVA were 0.94 ± 0.10 (ranging from 0.70 to 1.25) and 0.85 ± 0.13 (ranging from 0.63 to 1.00), respectively. At a distance, all patients showed a cumulative binocular distance-corrected visual acuity of 0.8 or better, and about 80% (n = 31) of the patients had a value of 1.0 (20/20). At near and intermediate distances, all patients showed a cumulative distance-corrected visual acuity of 0.5 (20/40) or better at 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 cm. Specifically, 50 cm showed the highest percentage of patients with larger values of visual acuity (60% [n = 26] with 20/20). Defocus curve showed a wide range of useful vision with two peaks of best visual acuity at distance and at 50 cm, and the binocular distance contrast sensitivity was within normal limits. CONCLUSIONS: The outcomes of the present study show that the visual performance obtained with bilateral implantation of the trifocal aspheric AcrySofIQ PanOptix IOL is good at far, intermediate, and near distances.

Range sensors are currently present in countless applications related to perception of the environment. In mobile robots, these devices constitute a key part of the sensory apparatus and enable essential operations, that are often addressed by applying methods grounded on probabilistic frameworks such as Bayesian filters. Unfortunately, modern mobile robots have to navigate within challenging environments from the perspective of their sensory devices, getting abnormal observations (e.g., biased, missing, etc.) that may compromise these operations. Although there exist previous contributions that either address filtering performance or identification of abnormal sensory observations, they do not provide a complete treatment of both problems at once. In this work we present a statistical approach that allows us to study and quantify the impact of abnormal observations from range sensors on the performance of Bayesian filters. For that, we formulate the estimation problem from a generic perspective (abstracting from concrete implementations), analyse the main limitations of common robotics range sensors, and define the factors that potentially affect the filtering performance. Rigorous statistical methods are then applied to a set of simulated experiments devised to reproduce a diversity of situations. The obtained results, which we also validate in a real environment, provide novel and relevant conclusions on the effect of abnormal range observations in these filters.

PURPOSE: To report visual and refractive results in radial keratotomy (RK) patients that underwent a cataract surgery with a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation with 1 year of follow-up. METHODS: Twenty-eight eyes of 15 patients with cataract and the previous RK were included. All eyes underwent phacoemulsification and monofocal IOL implantation. IOL power calculation was done using the Double-K formula of Aramberri. The preoperative versus postoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and the uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) values were used to assess the efficacy and safety of the surgery; meanwhile, the achieved versus the expected refractive outcomes postoperatively were used to assess the predictability. RESULTS: Phacoemulsification and IOL implantation was performed successfully in all eyes, and no intra- and postoperative problems occurred. The mean logMAR UDVA significantly improved from 0.7 ± 0.3 to 0.4 ± 0.2 at 6 months, and 0.3 ± 0.2 at 12 months postoperatively. By the end of the follow-up period, about 60% of the eyes achieved 20/25 or better CDVA, 25% of the eyes gained three or more lines of visual acuity, and two eyes had lost one or more lines of visual acuity. The mean spherical equivalent improved from - 1 ± 6.00 to - 0.75 ± 1.1 D by the end of the follow-up, and about 60% of the eyes were within ± 1 D at 12 months after the surgery. No intra- and postoperative problems occurred. CONCLUSIONS: Pseudophakic monofocal IOL implantation offers good visual acuity recovery and acceptable refractive correction in RK patients after 1-year follow-up.
