[Protein absorption in children with giardiasis]. / Absorción de proteínas en niños con giardiasis.

With the object of investigating if Giardiasis interferes in the intestinal absorption of proteins, a study was made testing the absorption of gelatin in eleven. The determination of alpha-aminonitrogen, before giving gelatin, and the increase shown two hours later, was the criterion used to measure the capacity of absorption. Once the estimated basal had been carried out each of the children received tinidazol for three days, after which the large amount of gelatin was given once again so as to estimate any changes in the absorption, one the parasite had been eliminated. The results demonstrate that the presence of giardia in the intestine significantly restricts the absorption of the gelatin. We offer as proof the results of these findings in the growth of children who harbour this parasite.

Con el objeto de investigar si la Giardia lamblia interfiere en la absorcion intestinal de proteinas, se estudio la respuesta de 11 ninos ante una carga de gelatina.La determinacion de alfa aminonitrogeno serico, antes de dar la proteina y el incremento habido 2 horas despues, fue el criterio usado para medir la capacidad de absorcion. Una vez efectuada la estimacion basa, cada uno de los ninos recibio tinidazol por 3 dias;luego se repitio la carga de gelatina con el fin de estimar los cambios en la absorcion, una vez que habia sido eliminado. Los resultados demuestran que la presencia de la giardia en el intestino restringe significativamente la absorcion de la gelatina. Se comenta la eventual transcendencia de este hallazgo en el crecimiento de los ninos que albergan este parasito
