RESUMEN

The intersection of nanotechnology and pharmacology has revolutionized the delivery and efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents, notably docetaxel, a key drug in cancer treatment. Traditionally limited by poor solubility and significant side effects, docetaxel's therapeutic potential has been significantly enhanced through its incorporation into nanoplatforms, such as nanofibers and nanoparticles. This advancement offers targeted delivery, controlled release, and improved bioavailability, dramatically reducing systemic toxicity and enhancing patient outcomes. Nanofibers provide a versatile scaffold for the controlled release of docetaxel, utilizing techniques like electrospinning to tailor drug release profiles. Nanoparticles, on the other hand, enable precise drug delivery to tumor cells, minimizing damage to healthy tissues through sophisticated encapsulation methods such as nanoprecipitation and emulsion. These nanotechnologies not only improve the pharmacokinetic properties of docetaxel but also open new avenues in regenerative medicine by facilitating targeted therapy and cellular regeneration. This narrative review highlights the transformative impact of docetaxel-loaded nanoplatforms in oncology and beyond, showcasing the potential of nanotechnology to overcome the limitations of traditional chemotherapy and pave the way for future innovations in drug delivery and regenerative therapies. Through these advancements, nanotechnology promises a new era of precision medicine, enhancing the efficacy of cancer treatments while minimizing adverse effects.

In recent decades, emerging data have highlighted the critical role of extracellular vesicles (EVs), especially (exosomes) Exos, in the progression and development of several cancer types. These nano-sized vesicles are released by different cell lineages within the cancer niche and maintain a suitable platform for the interchange of various signaling molecules in a paracrine manner. Based on several studies, Exos can transfer oncogenic factors to other cells, and alter the activity of immune cells, and tumor microenvironment, leading to the expansion of tumor cells and metastasis to the remote sites. It has been indicated that the cell-to-cell crosstalk is so complicated and a wide array of factors are involved in this process. How and by which mechanisms Exos can regulate the behavior of tumor cells and non-cancer cells is at the center of debate. Here, we scrutinize the molecular mechanisms involved in the oncogenic behavior of Exos released by different cell lineages of tumor parenchyma. Besides, tumoricidal properties of Exos from various stem cell (SC) types are discussed in detail.

BACKGROUND: One of the modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases is the inter-arm blood pressure difference (IAD), which can be easily measured. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors related to the Iranian population's inter-arm differences in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted on the baseline data of participants who had Iranian nationality, were at least 1 year of residence in the area, aged within the age range of 35-70 years, and willed to participate from the Fasa Persian Adult Cohort Study (FACS). IAD for systolic and diastolic blood pressure was measured and categorized into two groups of difference < 10 and ≥ 10 mmHg. Logistic regression was used to model the association between independent variables and IAD. RESULTS: The prevalence of systolic and diastolic IAD ≥ 10 mmHg was 16.34% and 10.2%, respectively, among 10,124 participants. According to the multivariable logistic regression models, age (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.019 [95% CI: 1.013, 1.025]), body mass index (BMI) (aOR: 1.112 [95% CI: 1.016, 1.229]), having type 2 diabetes (aOR Yes/No: 1.172 [95% CI: 1.015, 1.368]), having chronic headaches (aOR Yes/No: 1.182 [95% CI: 1.024, 1.365]), and pulse rate (aOR: 1.019 [95% CI: 1.014, 1.024]) significantly increased the odds of systolic IAD ≥ 10 mmHg. Additionally, high socio-economic status decreased the odds of systolic IAD ≥ 10 mmHg (aOR High/Low: 0.854 [95% CI: 0.744, 0.979]). For diastolic IAD, age (aOR: 1.112 [95% CI: 1.015, 1.210]) and pulse rate (aOR: 1.021 [95% CI: 1.015, 1.027]) significantly increased the odds of diastolic IAD ≥ 10 mmHg. Moreover, high socioeconomic status decreased the odds of diastolic IAD ≥ 10 mmHg (aOR High/Low: 0.820 [95% CI: 0.698, 0.963]). CONCLUSION: The noticeable prevalence of systolic and diastolic IAD in general population exhibits health implications due to its' association with the risk of cardiovascular events. Sociodemographic and medical history assessments have potentials to be incorporated in IAD risk stratification and preventing programs.

BACKGROUND: This is the first clinical trial to investigate the effectiveness of maggot debridement therapy (MDT) for full-thickness burn injuries in comparison to conventional silver dressings. METHODS: Thirty-one cases with full-thickness (grade III based on ICD-10 classifications version 2019) burns were assigned into larval therapy (15 cases) and conventional treatment (16 cases) groups. Participants in the MDT group have received loose larvae on days 0, 2, 4, and 6, while controls received a conventional regimen comprised of sharp debridement, silver sulfadiazine, antibiotic therapy, and offloading every day. The primary and secondary outcomes were defined as the time to debridement (from admission to skin autograft) and time to healing (from admission to complete healing post-skin autograft). Patients in two groups were also compared in terms of necrosis resolution, granulation, and granulation/necrosis (g/n) ratio during study time periods. RESULTS: Participants who received larvae had significantly decreased necrosis on days 2 (p = 0.028) and 4 (p = 0.023) compared to those who received control treatment. Significant differences (p < 0.001) were also observed for granulation between the two groups in favor of MDT and the fold changes of g/n in the larvae group were 5, 15, and 13 times higher than that for the conventional regimen on days 2, 4, and 6 of treatment, respectively. Strikingly, a subgroup analysis of high necrotic burns (necrosis > 50%) revealed a significant improvement (p < 0.001) for MDT compared to the control treatment. There were also significant differences (p < 0.001) for the time to debridement and time to healing between the two groups. However, bacterial contamination did not show significant changes between the two treatment regimens. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings revealed that MDT has a favorable superiority over conventional regimen for the treatment of grade-III burns, and thus further clinical trials with larger sample size are warranted to confirm these results.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune central nervous system (CNS) disorder indicated by demyelination, chronic inflammation, and neuronal destruction. Regional demyelination, inflammation responses, scar development, and various axonal damage are pathological characteristics of MS. Curcumin is a hydrophobic polyphenol extracted from the rhizome of the turmeric plant. In addition to anti-inflammatory effects, beneficial therapeutic effects such as antioxidant, anti-cancer and nerve protection have also been seen from this compound. The purpose of the current investigation was to provide light on the potential benefits of Curcumin in treating experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the animal model of MS. METHODS AND RESULTS: in Female C57BL/6 mice were used to induce EAE through myelin oligodendroglial glycoprotein (MOG). Curcumin doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg were administered orally in the treatment groups starting on the first day of EAE induction. Brains and splenocytes were extracted from euthanized animals on day 25 following EAE induction. Demyelination and leukocyte infiltration, proliferation, cytokine, and gene expression profiles were assessed. Our findings demonstrate that both low and high doses of Curcumin decreased the progression of EAE. Histological analyses revealed low infiltration of leukocytes into the CNS. Curcumin therapy enhanced Th2 and Treg cell secretion of IL-4, IL-10, and TGF-ß although considerably decreasing IFN-γ and TNF-α. Curcumin-induced Th2 and Treg cell cytokine production and transcription factor gene expression (IL-13, GATA3, STAT6 and IL-35, CTLA4, Foxp3) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-27, IL-33). CONCLUSION: Overall, these findings provide additional evidence that Curcumin can slow disease development and alleviate symptoms in EAE through stimulating Treg and Th2 cell polarization. They support Curcumin's potential therapeutic role in MS.

OBJECTIVES: The main aim of this study is to estimate a national value set of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire for Iran. METHODS: The composite time trade-off (cTTO) and discrete choice experiment (DCE) methods; and the protocol for EuroQol Portable Valuation Technology (EQ-PVT) were used to estimate the Iran national value set. 1179 face-to-face computer-assisted interviews were conducted with adults that were recruited from five Iran major cities in 2021. Generalized least squares, Tobit, heteroskedastic, logit, and hybrid models were used to analyze the data and to identify the best fitting model. RESULTS: According to the logical consistency of the parameters, significance levels and prediction accuracy indices of the MAE; a heteroscedastic censored Tobit hybrid model combining cTTO and DCE responses was considered as the best fitting model to estimate the final value set. The predicted values ranged from - 1.19 for the worst health state (55555) to 1 for full health (11111), with 53.6% of the predicted values being negative. Mobility was the most influential dimension on health state preference values. CONCLUSIONS: The present study estimated a national EQ-5D-5L value set for Iranian policy makers and researchers. The value set enables the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire to use to calculate QALYs to assist the priority setting and efficient allocation of limited healthcare resources.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Post-traumatic stress disorders, depression, and pain are rarely discussed in the literature on maxillofacial injuries, and psychiatric symptoms and pain are not identified and managed in such patients. The aim of this study was to determine the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorders, depression, and pain in people with maxillofacial injuries following motor vehicle accidents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, people injured in motor vehicle accidents from March to September 2015 who were referred to a medical educational center in the northern part of Iran for treatment follow-up were sampled. The existing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder by PSS, depression by BDI-II, and pain by NRS were assessed. SPSS software version 21 was used for analysis. RESULTS: Maxillofacial injured patients had significant differences in terms of post-traumatic stress disorder (p = .006), depression (p = .001), pain (p = .001), and length of hospital stay (p = .002) than patients without maxillofacial injuries. CONCLUSIONS: Motor vehicle accident victims with maxillofacial injuries suffered significantly more from post-traumatic stress disorders and depression, pain and length of hospital stay than patients with other injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Bone indexes including trabecular bone score (TBS) and bone mineral density (BMD) have been shown to be associated with wide spectrum of variables including physical activity, vitamin D, liver enzymes, biochemical measurements, mental and sleep disorders, and quality of life. Here we aimed to determine the most important factors related to TBS and BMD in SUVINA dataset. METHODS: Data were extracted from the Survey of Ultraviolet Intake by Nutritional Approach (SUVINA study) including all 306 subjects entered this survey. All the available parameters in the SUVINA database were included the analysis. XGBoost modeler software was used to define the most important features associated with bone indexes including TBS and BMD in various sites. RESULTS: Applying XGBoost modeling for 4 bone indexes indicated that this algorithm could identify the most important variables in relation to bone indexes with an accuracy of 92%, 93%, 90% and 90% respectively for TBS T-score, lumbar Z-score, neck of femur Z-score and Radius Z-score. Serum vitamin D, pro-oxidant-oxidant balance (PAB) and physical activity level (PAL) were the most important factors related to bone indices in different sites of the body. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated that XGBoost could identify the most important variables with an accuracy of >90% for TBS and BMD. The most important features associated with bone indexes were serum vitamin D, PAB and PAL.

BACKGROUNDS: Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) are the first leading cause of death worldwide. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between demographics, anthropometrics, sleep duration, physical activity, and ECG parameters in the Fasa Persian cohort study. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the basic information of 10,000 participants aged 35-70 years in the Fasa cohort study was used. The data used in this study included demographic data, main Electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters, anthropometric data, sleep duration, and physical activity. Data analysis was performed using t-test, chi-square, and linear regression model. RESULTS: Based on multivariate linear regression analysis results, increased age was significantly associated with all study parameters. Nevertheless, gender and body mass index showed no significant relationship with SV3 and PR. Wrist circumference, hip circumference and waist circumference significantly increased the mean values of the ECG parameters. However, sleep duration was not significantly associated with the ECG parameters. In addition, hypertension was major comorbidity, which was shown to increase the mean values of the ECG parameters. CONCLUSION: Several factors affected the ECG parameters. Thus, to interpret ECGs, in addition to age and gender, anthropometric indices, physical activity, and previous history of comorbidities, such as hypertension and ischemic heart disease, should be taken into consideration.

Background: Contrary to health indices advancement during recent years, health inequalities are still a global challenge. This study aimed to determine socioeconomic factors for noncommunicable diseases using concentration indices (CI). Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on the baseline data from a cohort study in Fasa (southern Iran). Principle component analysis was used to measure asset index. Moreover, socioeconomic inequalities were calculated by CI. Analysis was done at 95% confidence level using STATA software. Results: A total of 7990 individuals were included in the study. The highest negative CIs were significantly found for epilepsy (-0.334), paramnesia (-0.255), and learning disabilities (-0.063), respectively, and the lowest were significantly found for chronic headaches (-0.046), recurrent headaches (-0.03), infertility (-0.028) and hypertension (-0.057). This index was positive for breast cancer (0.298). Furthermore, it was not Significant for diabetes, thyroid disorders, depression, and chronic lung diseases. Conclusion: The findings showed a significant inequality in the most of the noncommunicable diseases in the region, which are more concentrated among the poorest population. Policymakers in the health system and city planners should consider these results to decrease the burden of noncommunicable diseases in the society by identifying vulnerable subcategories.

Derived from rosaceous plant seed, amygdalin belongs to aromatic cyanogenic glycoside group, and its anticancer effects have been supported by mounting evidence. In this study, we objected to investigate amygdalin effect on two antiapoptotic genes (Survivin, XIAP) and two lncRNAs (GAS5, MALAT1) in human cancer cells (A549, MCF7, AGS). Employing RT-qPCR analysis, we compared the mRNA levels of the genes related to apoptosis in A549, MCF7, and AGS cancer cells between amygdalin-treated (24, 48 and 72 h) and un-treated groups. RNA was extracted from both cell groups and then cDNAs were synthesized. The changes in the gene expression levels were specified using ΔΔCt method. RT-qPCR analysis has revealed that the expression of Survivin, XIAP, GAS5 and MALAT1 in amygdala-treated cancer cells were significantly different, compared to the un-treated cells. However, these expressions were different depending on the treatment time. According to the results, amygdalin significantly inhibited the expression level of Survivin, and XIAP genes in treated via untreated group. Our findings suggest that amygdalin might have an anticancer effect due to the various gene expressions in A549, MCF7, and AGS human cancer cells, showing it's potential as a natural therapeutic anticancer drug.

In the past two decades, rapeseed farming has garnered attention, because it offers the possibility of attaining self-sufficiency in the production of edible oil, which is a strategic product for Iran. Therefore, the overarching goal of this research was to provide sound strategies to further the development of rapeseed farming and to increase the sustainability and productivity of rapeseed production systems. Progress toward this goal was made by assessing subsistence and commercial rapeseed production systems in Khorramabad, Iran during the 2017-2018 crop year using both emergy and economic indices. The calculated values of the ESI*, %R, ELR, and ELR* indices showed the higher ecological sustainability of the subsistence farming system compared to the commercial system of rapeseed production. According to these indices, the main reason for the lower sustainability of the commercial rapeseed production system was the large amount of soil organic matter that was lost per unit input of nonrenewable resources used. A large emergy exchange ratio in favor of the buyer, the increased environmental sustainability when the market impact is considered, the lower emergy consumption per unit of output, and the higher productivity of the production factors all reflect the relative advantage of the commercial system based on the indices of EERY, EISD, UEV, and total factor productivity (TFP), respectively. Hence, our findings revealed that in the commercial rapeseed production system, the ecologic sustainability of the system can be improved drastically by employing scientific solutions for the comprehensive management of the production ecosystems, especially through the amelioration of soil organic matter and prevention of its loss. Besides improving the farmers' technical knowledge, the integration of small lots into the production system is recommended for improving the economic sustainability of the subsistence production system.

During the periparturient period, elevated circulating nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) from excessive lipid mobilization affect not only the circulating fatty acid (FA) composition, but also that of the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL). However, the changes to specific lipid fractions remain unknown. We hypothesized that elevated lipid mobilization will alter FA profiles and gene expression of selected proinflammatory mediators in PBMC and PMNL. Starting -28 d relative to expected calving (d 0), treatment cows (n = 18) received a dry cow ration plus an additional 10 kg of corn/head per day, while the control cows (n = 16) received the dry cow ration (no additional corn) supplemented with 400 mg of monensin/head per day to minimize lipid mobilization. Postpartum, treatment cows were feed deprived for 8 h on d +3. For FA analysis, serum was collected on d -28 and -7 relative to expected parturition and d +1, +3, +6, +15, and +21 postpartum, in addition to milk samples. Immune cells, PBMC and PMNL, were isolated on d -28, +3, +12, and +21 for FA analysis and gene expression analysis by reverse-transcription PCR. Serum, PBMC, and PMNL lipids were fractionated into NEFA and phospholipids (PL). The FA composition of milk, serum, PBMC, and PMNL was analyzed by gas chromatography. Data were analyzed as repeated measures ANOVA using mixed model procedures in SAS (9.3) with significance declared at P ≤ 0.05. Several FA varied by treatment and across time and parity. Within the serum PL fraction, FA associated with altered immune function, C18:3n-6, C20:4, C20:5, total n-3, and the ratio of n-6 to n-3 varied significantly by a treatment × parity × time interaction. Overall, FA composition of NEFA and PL fractions from PBMC and PMNL did not significantly reflect FA of serum. Gene expression for IL-1ß in PBMC was greater for control, whereas ICAM, IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α were greater in primiparous than multiparous cows, without a detectable treatment effect. Whereas gene expression of CASP, IL-8R, and SELL in PMNL changed over time, no treatment effect was detected. In summary, high-energy prepartal diets altered FA profile in serum, milk, PBMC, and PMNL lipids; however, gene expression of selected proinflammatory mediators was not significantly affected.

Demulsifiers with suitable performance in several demulsification methods are good choices for effective and economical demulsification. In this study, recyclable magnetic cellulose nanocrystals have been synthesized from cotton by a simple method and used in the demulsification of water in crude oil emulsions. Chemical and magnetic demulsification by magnetic cellulose nanocrystals has been investigated. In addition, the effects of time, temperature, and demulsifier concentration on the demulsification efficiency have been evaluated. According to the results, this demulsifier can be used as an effective demulsifier for both chemical and magnetic demulsification and displayed a demulsification efficiency of 100 % at 50 °C without a magnet and 90 % at 20 °C with a magnet. The chemical demulsification efficiency of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was investigated and it showed lower DE compared to magnetic cellulose nanocrystals. The recyclability tests of the demulsifier indicated that magnetic cellulose nanocrystals can be used up to 4 times. Finally, the demulsification mechanism and interfacial tension measurements revealed that this demulsifier reduced the interfacial tension between water and crude oil and increased the water droplet sizes.

Urease-powered nano/micromotors can move at physiological urea concentrations, making them useful for biomedical applications, such as treating bladder cancer. However, their movement in biological environments is still challenging. Herein, Janus micromotors based on black TiO2 with urease asymmetric catalytic coating were designed to take benefit of the optical properties of black TiO2 under near-infrared light and the movement capability in simulated bladder environments (urea). The black TiO2 microspheres were half-coated with a thin layer of Au, and l-Cysteine was utilized to attach the urease enzyme to the Au surface using its thiol group. Biocatalytic hydrolysis of urea through urease at biologically relevant concentrations provided the driving force for micromotors. A variety of parameters, such as urea fuel concentration, viscosity, and ionic character of the environment, were used to investigate how micromotors moved in different concentrations of urea in water, PBS, NaCl, and urine. The results indicate that micromotors are propelled through ionic self-diffusiophoresis caused by urea enzymatic catalysis. Due to their low toxicity and in vitro anticancer effect, micromotors are effective agents for photothermal therapy, which can help kill bladder cancer cells. These promising results suggest that biocompatible micromotors hold great potential for improving cancer treatment and facilitating diagnosis.

Aim: Silk fibroin/chitosan/ZnO/Astragalus arbusculinus (Ast) gum fibrous scaffolds along with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) were investigated for accelerating diabetic wound healing. Methods: Scaffolds with a core-shell structure and different compositions were synthesized using the electrospinning method. Biological in vitro investigations included antibacterial testing, cell viability analysis and cell attachment evaluation. In vivo experiments, including the chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) test, were conducted to assess wound-healing efficacy and histopathological changes. Results: The incorporation of Ast to the silk fibroin@ chitosan/ZnO scaffold improved wound healing in diabetic mice. In addition, seeding of ADSCs on the scaffold accelerated wound healing. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the designed scaffold can be useful for skin regeneration applications.

Background and Aims: Health policymakers face challenges in designing compulsory plan packages for medical students to encourage them to work in disadvantaged regions. Using a discrete choice experiment, this study assessed the preferences of medical students for selecting the compulsory service plan packages in Guilan Province, Iran. Methods: In total, 374 medical students responded to a survey inquiring about salary, distance from their residency city, availability of welfare amenities, work difficulty, the developmental status of their workplace, contract duration, and preference for urban or rural work settings. Results: The study revealed that students favor a compulsory service package that provides higher salaries and shorter contract duration. They also show a preference for working within their home province over other factors. For the opportunity to serve in their city of residence, they would forgo an average of US$77.93 per month. Conclusion: While financial incentives were the primary consideration for medical students when choosing compulsory service packages, a range of nonfinancial factors significantly influenced their decisions as well.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate blood glucose levels in patients with brain injury caused by mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a foundation for determining whether these patients need a brain CT scan or not. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on patients with mild TBI, who were referred to the emergency department from March 1, 2022, to September 1, 2022. After the confirmation of mild TBI by an emergency medicine specialist, blood samples were taken from the patients to measure blood glucose levels. Then a brain CT scan was performed, and blood glucose levels were compared between patients with and without CT indications of brain injury. A checklist was used to collect data, and the data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 23). Results: In the CT scans of the 157 patients included in the study, 30 patients (19.2%) had a brain injury in the CT scan. The mean blood glucose level was significantly higher in patients with brain injury, especially in the presence of vertigo and ataxia, than patients without brain injury in the CT scan (p<0.0001). There was a significant positive correlation between age and blood glucose level (r=0.315, p<0.0001). Conclusion: Patients with mild TBI who had signs of brain injury in the CT scan had significantly higher blood glucose levels than patients with normal CT scan findings. Although indications for performing a brain CT scan are usually based on clinical criteria, blood glucose levels can be helpful in determining the requirement for a brain CT scan in patients with mild TBI.

BACKGROUND: Research interest in the impact of comorbidities in MS has been expanding. Based on studies, certain comorbidities are more prevalent in MS population such as depression, anxiety, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, and hypothyroidism. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the prevalence of comorbidities in MS population based on the health insurance claims data. METHOD: This retrospective database analysis was conducted using patient-level medicinal and pharmacy claims data from a leading insurance group (Iranian health insurance) in 2007-2016. MS population was identified based on their Disease Modifying Therapies prescribed by a neurologist (qualified to diagnose MS). Comorbidities in MS and non-MS population were assessed by their prescriptions. Crude and age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR) of coverage of comorbidities in different age and sex groups and their odds ratio versus non-MS population were assessed. RESULTS: The most common comorbidities were depression (15.50%) and anxiety (10.1%). Hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, hypertension, and hypothyroidism were prevalent in 6%, 3.6%, 3.5%, and 2.7% respectively. Anxiety and depression were more prevalent in middle age group (45-65 years old). But other comorbidities were more prevalent in older age groups. All comorbidities were more prevalent in female except hypertension in patients ≥45 years old. The odds of all comorbidities were higher for male patients with MS rather than their parallel age group in non-MS patients. These also applied for female patients with MS 18-44 years old (except hypertension). CONCLUSION: Using claims data, the prevalence of taking treatment for selected comorbidities in MS population and their association with sex and age, can guide patients, healthcare providers, and policy makers to help improve MS patients' wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: The triglyceride glucose (TyG) and triglyceride-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-c) are the indices that can predict the progression of pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study aimed to examine the relationship between TyG and TG/HDL-c indices with the incidence of T2DM in pre-diabetes patients. METHODS: A total of 758 pre-diabetic patients aged 35-70 years who were enrolled in a prospective Fasa Persian Adult Cohort were followed up for 60 months. TyG and TG/HDL-C indices were obtained at baseline data and divided into quartiles. The 5-year cumulative incidence of T2DM was analyzed by Cox proportional hazards regression analysis while controlling for baseline covariates. RESULTS: During 5 years of follow-up, there were 95 incident cases of T2DM, with an overall incidence rate of 12.53%. After adjusting for age, sex, smoking, marital status, socioeconomic status, body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, hypertension, total cholesterol, and dyslipidemia, the multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) demonstrated that patients with the highest TyG and TG/HDL-C indices quartile were at higher risk of T2DM (HR = 4.42, 95%CI 1.75-11.21) and (HR = 2.15, 95%CI 1.04-4.47), respectively, compared to participants in the lowest quartile. As the quantiles of these indices increase, the HR value shows a significant increment (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of our study showed that the TyG and TG/HDL-C indices can be important independent predictors for the progression of pre-diabetes to T2DM. Therefore, controlling the components of these indicators in pre-diabetes patients can prevent developing T2DM or delay its occurrence.
