OBJECTIVE: Using a biopsychosocial framework and the three-factor fatigue model, we aimed to (1) plot recovery of fatigue over the 3 months following paediatric concussion and (2) explore factors associated with persisting fatigue during the first 3 months postconcussion. METHODS: 240 children and adolescents aged 5-18 years (M=11.64, SD=3.16) completed assessments from time of injury to 3 months postinjury. Separate linear mixed effects models were conducted for child and parent ratings on the PedsQL-Multidimensional Fatigue Scale to plot recovery across domains (General, Cognitive, Sleep/Rest) and Total fatigue, from 1 week to 3 months postinjury. Two-block hierarchical regression analyses were then conducted for parent and child ratings of fatigue at each time point, with age, sex and acute symptoms in block 1 and child and parent mental health variables added to block 2. RESULTS: There was a significant reduction in both child and parent ratings across the 3 months postinjury for all fatigue domains (all p<0.001). For both child and parent fatigue ratings, child mental health was the most significant factor associated with fatigue at all time points. Adding child and parent mental health variables in the second block of the regression substantially increased the variance explained for both child and parent ratings of fatigue. CONCLUSION: Our findings confirm that fatigue improves during the first 3 months postconcussion and highlights the importance of considering child and parent mental health screening when assessing patients with persisting postconcussive symptoms.

This study examined the feasibility of "Concussion Essentials" (CE), an individualized, multimodal intervention for persisting post-concussion symptoms (pPCS). Thirteen 6-18 year-olds with pPCS at 1-month post-concussion, as determined by the Post Concussion Symptom Inventory - Parent Report (PCSI-P), completed education, physiotherapy, and psychology modules, for up to 8-weeks or until pPCS resolved. Intervention participants were matched to a longitudinal observational cohort who received usual care (n = 13). The study enrolled 70% of participants symptomatic on screening and the dropout rate was <30% between baseline and post-programme assessments (4-weeks to 3-months post-injury). Symptoms improved for 100% of CE participants, with the number of symptomatic items on the PCSI-P reducing from 4-weeks, Median (IQR) = 14.0 (8.0-19.0) to 3-months, Median (IQR) = 1.0 (0.0-5.0). Comparatively, symptoms improved for approximately half of matched usual care participants. CE participants (n = 8) and their parents (n = 11) completed acceptability questionnaires. Most parents (91%) agreed CE was acceptable for children with concussion. All participants agreed CE was appropriate for concussion, while approximately 88% agreed they enjoyed the intervention and would recommend CE to others. Findings suggest CE is a feasible and acceptable treatment for paediatric pPCS. Further investigation within a larger scale randomized clinical trial is warranted.

There are conflicting estimates of the duration of mouse primary follicle development. An accurate determination is needed for studies examining preantral follicle survival and mathematical modeling of folliculogenesis. Primary follicle granulosa cell proliferation rates are low and variable, which may explain the variation in duration estimates. In the present study, female C57Bl6/J mice were exposed to bromodeoxyuridine for 48 hours, to label the proliferating granulosa cells in a large proportion of primary follicles. The bromodeoxyuridine-containing water was then withdrawn and replaced with drug-free water and the mice were euthanized at 0, 1, 3, 6, 10, or 13 days post-bromodeoxyuridine withdrawal. Granulosa cells were bromodeoxyuridine labeled in 48% of primary follicles at day 0, but this decreased to 5% over the 13-day period, as the labeled primary follicles progressed to the secondary follicle stage. Curve-fitting estimated that the last of the bromodeoxyuridine-labeled primary follicles would progress to the secondary stage by 13.7 days. Mathematical models that assumed constant rates of primary follicle proliferation were fitted to the data, but the observed pattern of bromodeoxyuridine-labeled primary follicle disappearance could not be replicated. The level of immunoreactivity for bromodeoxyuridine and proliferating-cell nuclear antigen in primary follicles revealed follicles with no granulosa cell proliferation during the 48-h bromodeoxyuridine-exposure period had resumed proliferation 1 or 3 days later. Therefore, primary follicle granulosa cells proliferate after follicle activation, but proliferation rates gradually increase as the follicle develops. Prior estimates of primary follicle duration are inaccurate due to the assumption that follicles develop at a constant rate.

PURPOSE: To examine the frequency, costs, and cost influencers of inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) placements and retrievals among a national sample of patients using Medicare data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used the U.S. Medicare 100% database, a nationally representative sample of all U.S. patients aged ≥65 years, from 2014 through 2020. Procedures and clinical characteristics were identified from the diagnosis and procedure codes on Medicare claims. Beneficiaries aged ≥65 years with newly diagnosed venous thromboembolism (VTE) were identified and followed to obtain data on IVCF placements and retrievals. Data on the costs of the index IVCF procedures and any subsequent IVCF placements and retrievals were obtained. Multivariate models were used to estimate the impact of patient and clinical characteristics on costs. RESULTS: Among 501,216 patients with newly diagnosed VTE, 4,995 (1%) received an IVCF placement; of these, 1,215 (24.3%) had a retrieval procedure. Beneficiaries with IVCF placements and retrievals differed from a demographic and clinical perspective than from those without. Costs varied by the site of service, VTE acuity, and VTE type. Cost influencers included age, race, census region, service location, and VTE type. CONCLUSIONS: IVCF placement costs were driven by baseline patient characteristics (age, race, geographic residence, acute VTE diagnosis, and inpatient site of service), whereas retrieval costs were driven by age and deep vein thrombosis diagnosis. Strategies to mitigate the retrieval costs or the need to retrieve IVCFs may reduce the overall cost burden of IVCFs.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical artificial intelligence (AI) is a novel technology, and few economic evaluations have focused on it to date. Before its wider implementation, it is important to highlight the aspects of AI that challenge traditional health technology assessment methods. METHODS: We used an existing broad value framework to assess potential ways AI can provide good value for money. We also developed a rubric of how economic evaluations of AI should vary depending on the case of its use. RESULTS: We found that the measurement of core elements of value-health outcomes and cost-are complicated by AI because its generalizability across different populations is often unclear and because its use may necessitate reconfigured clinical processes. Clinicians' productivity may improve when AI is used. If poorly implemented though, AI may also cause clinicians' workload to increase. Some AI has been found to exacerbate health disparities. Nevertheless, AI may promote equity by expanding access to medical care and, when properly trained, providing unbiased diagnoses and prognoses. The approach to assessment of AI should vary based on its use case: AI that creates new clinical possibilities can improve outcomes, but regulation and evidence collection may be difficult; AI that extends clinical expertise can reduce disparities and lower costs but may result in overuse; and AI that automates clinicians' work can improve productivity but may reduce skills. CONCLUSIONS: The potential uses of clinical AI create challenges for health technology assessment methods originally developed for pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Health economists should be prepared to examine data collection and methods used to train AI, as these may impact its future value.

The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 5th Edition (SCAT5) is a standardized measure of concussion. In this prospective observational study, the ability of the SCAT5 and ChildSCAT5 to differentiate between children with and without a concussion was examined. Concussed children (n=91) and controls (n=106) were recruited from an emergency department in three equal-sized age bands (5-8/9-12/13-16 years). Analysis of covariance models (adjusting for participant age) were used to analyze group differences on components of the SCAT5. On the SCAT5 and ChildSCAT5, respectively, youth with concussion reported a greater number (d=1.47; d=0.52) and severity (d=1.27; d=0.72) of symptoms than controls (all p<0.001). ChildSCAT5 parent-rated number (d=0.98) and severity (d=1.04) of symptoms were greater for the concussion group (all p<0.001). Acceptable levels of between-group discrimination were identified for SCAT5 symptom number (AUC=0.86) and severity (AUC=0.84) and ChildSCAT5 parent-rated symptom number (AUC=0.76) and severity (AUC=0.78). Our findings support the utility of the SCAT5 and ChildSCAT5 to accurately distinguish between children with and without a concussion.

Single atom (SA), noble metal catalysts are of interest due to high projected catalytic activity while minimizing cost. Common issues facing many synthesis methodologies include complicated processes, low yields of SA product, and production of mixtures of SA and nanoparticles (NPs). Herein we report a simple, room-temperature synthesis of single Pt-atom decorated, anatase Fe-doped TiO2 particles that leverages the Fe dopant as an engineered defect site to photodeposit and stabilize atomically dispersed Pt. Both particle morphology and Fe dopant location are based on thermodynamic principles (Gibbs-Wulff construction). CO-DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) reveals absence of bridge-bonded CO signal, confirming atomically dispersed Pt. XAS (X-ray absorption spectroscopy) of both Pt and Fe indicates Fe-O-Pt bonding that persists through catalytic cycling. Mass balance indicates that the Pt loading on single particles is 2.5 wt % Pt; the single Pt-atom decorated nanoparticle yield is 17%. Pt-containing particles show more than an order-of-magnitude increased photooxidation efficiency relative to particles containing only Fe. High single-atom-Pt yield, ease of synthesis, and high catalytic activity demonstrate the utility and promise of this method. The principles of this photodeposition synthesis allow for its generalizability toward other SA metals of catalytic interest.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has broader geographic spread and potentially longer lasting effects than those of previous disasters. Necessary preventive precautions for the transmission of COVID-19 has resulted in delays for in-person health care services, especially at the outset of the pandemic. OBJECTIVE: Among a US sample, we examined the rates of delays (defined as cancellations and postponements) in health care at the outset of the pandemic and characterized the reasons for such delays. METHODS: As part of an internet-based survey that was distributed on social media in April 2020, we asked a US-based convenience sample of 2570 participants about delays in their health care resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Participant demographics and self-reported worries about general health and the COVID-19 pandemic were explored as potent determinants of health care delays. In addition to all delays, we focused on the following three main types of delays, which were the primary outcomes in this study: dental, preventive, and diagnostic care delays. For each outcome, we used bivariate statistical tests (t tests and chi-square tests) and multiple logistic regression models to determine which factors were associated with health care delays. RESULTS: The top reported barrier to receiving health care was the fear of SARS-CoV-2 infection (126/374, 33.6%). Almost half (1227/2570, 47.7%) of the participants reported experiencing health care delays. Among those who experienced health care delays and further clarified the type of delay they experienced (921/1227, 75.1%), the top three reported types of care that were affected by delays included dental (351/921, 38.1%), preventive (269/921, 29.2%), and diagnostic (151/921, 16.4%) care. The logistic regression models showed that age (P<.001), gender identity (P<.001), education (P=.007), and self-reported worry about general health (P<.001) were significantly associated with experiencing health care delays. Self-reported worry about general health was negatively related to experiencing delays in dental care. However, this predictor was positively associated with delays in diagnostic testing based on the logistic regression model. Additionally, age was positively associated with delays in diagnostic testing. No factors remained significant in the multiple logistic regression for delays in preventive care, and although there was trend between race and delays (people of color experienced fewer delays than White participants), it was not significant (P=.06). CONCLUSIONS: The lessons learned from the initial surge of COVID-19 cases can inform systemic mitigation strategies for potential future disruptions. This study addresses the demand side of health care delays by exploring the determinants of such delays. More research on health care delays during the pandemic is needed, including research on their short- and long-term impacts on patient-level outcomes such as mortality, morbidity, mental health, people's quality of life, and the experience of pain.

Biofeedback (BF) training has been utilized with performers for years. Previous literature highlights the effectiveness of multi-week intervention protocols, but there is a lack of evidence for abbreviated interventions using portable devices and the performer's preference of these devices. Therefore, we investigated the effects of a brief BF intervention on mental workload, mood, arousal, and movement time and BF device preference. Participants (N = 40) were randomly assigned to one of two heart rate variability (HRV) BF interventions or a control group. Although the brief intervention did not have a significant effect on mood, movement time, or mental workload, it did significantly and positively impact perceived arousal. Overall, 12 participants (48%) preferred the EmWave™ desktop device, eight (32%) preferred the Inner Balance™ device, and five (20%) preferred the EmWave2™ portable device. Results support limited effectiveness of a brief HRV BF protocol, although the dose-response effectiveness should continue to be explored.

The recruitment of immune cells during inflammation is regulated by a multi-step cascade of cell rolling, activation, adhesion and transmigration through the endothelial barrier. Similarly, hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) use this pathway to migrate and home to the bone marrow. After selectin-mediated braking, HSPCs migrate on adhesion ligands presented by the vascular endothelium including ICAM-1, VCAM-1 or MAdCAM-1. Here, we report that both the KG1a stem cell line and primary bone marrow CD34+ HSPCs can migrate against the direction of fluid flow on surfaces coated with cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), a behavior thus far only reported in T lymphocytes. We demonstrate that KG1a cells and primary HSPCs migrate upstream on surfaces presenting ICAM-1, downstream on surfaces presenting VCAM-1, and both upstream and downstream on surfaces presenting MAdCAM-1. In addition, we demonstrate that KG1a cells and HSPCs display upstream migration both on surfaces with multiple CAMs, as well as on human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) monolayers. By blocking with monoclonal antibodies, we show that lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) is the key receptor responsible for upstream migration on the endothelium during the trafficking of HSPCs to the bone marrow.This article has an associated First Person interview with the first author of the paper.

Epidemiological studies have pointed at diabetes as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and this has been supported by several studies in animal models of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. However, side-by-side comparison of the two types of diabetes is limited. We investigated the role of insulin deficiency and insulin resistance in the development of memory impairments and the effect of Exendin-4 (Ex4) treatment in a mouse model of AD. Three-4-month-old female wild type (WT) mice and mice overexpressing human tau and amyloid precursor protein (TAPP) were injected with streptozotocin (STZ) or fed a high-fat diet (HFD). A second study was performed in TAPP-STZ mice treated with Ex4, a long-lasting analog of GLP-1. Plasma and brain were collected at study termination for ELISA, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry analysis. Learning and memory deficits were impaired in TAPP transgenic mice compared with WT mice at the end of the study. Deficits were exaggerated by insulin deficiency in TAPP mice but 12 weeks of insulin resistance did not affect memory performances in either WT or TAPP mice. Levels of phosphorylated tau were increased in the brain of WT-STZ and TAPP-STZ mice but not in the brain of WT or TAPP mice on HFD. In the TAPP-STZ mice, treatment with Ex4 initiated after established cognitive deficits ameliorated learning, but not memory, impairments. This was accompanied by the reduction of amyloid ß and phosphorylated tau expression. Theses studies support the role of Ex4 in AD, independently from its actions on diabetes.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most effective professional antigen-presenting cell. They ferry antigen from the extremities to T cells and are essential for the initiation of an adaptive immune response. Despite interest in how DCs respond to chemical stimuli, there have been few attempts to model DC migration. In this paper, we simulate the motility of DCs by modeling the generation of forces by filopodia and a force balance on the cell. The direction of fliopodial extension is coupled to differential occupancy of cognate chemokine receptors across the cell. Our model simulates chemokinesis and chemotaxis in a variety of chemical and mechanical environments. Simulated DCs undergoing chemokinesis were measured to have a speed of 5.1 ± 0.07 µm·min-1 and a persistence time of 3.2 ± 0.46 min, consistent with experiment. Cells undergoing chemotaxis exhibited a stronger chemotactic response when exposed to lower average chemokine concentrations, also consistent with experiment. We predicted that when placed in two opposing gradients, cells will cluster in a line, which we call the "line of equistimulation;" this clustering has also been observed. We calculated the effect of varying gradient steepness on the line of equistimulation, with steeper gradients resulting in tighter clustering. Moreover, gradients are found to be most potent when cells are in a gradient of chemokine whose mean concentration is close to the binding of the Kd to the receptor, and least potent when the mean concentration is 0.1Kd. Comparing our simulations to experiment, we can give a quantitative measure of the strength of certain chemokines relative to others. Assigning the signal of CCL19 binding CCR7 a baseline strength of 1, we found CCL21 binding CCR7 had a strength of 0.28, and CXCL12 binding CXCR4 had a strength of 0.30. These differences emerge despite both chemokines having virtually the same Kd, suggesting a mechanism of signal amplification in DCs requiring further study.

AIM: The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool v3 (SCAT3) and its child version (ChildSCAT3) are composite tools including a symptom scale, a rapid cognitive assessment (standardised assessment of concussion (SAC)) and the modified Balance Error Scoring System (mBESS). It is unclear whether their use for the acute assessment of paediatric concussion in the emergency department (ED) may help predict persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS). We aim to assess the predictive value of the main SCAT3/ChildSCAT3 components for PPCS when applied in the ED. METHODS: A single-site, prospective longitudinal cohort study of children aged 5-18 years assessed within 48 h of their concussion at the ED of a state-wide tertiary paediatric hospital and followed up at the affiliated concussion clinic, between November 2013 and August 2017. PPCS was defined as ≥2 new or worsening symptoms at 1 month post-injury using the Post-Concussive Symptom Inventory. RESULTS: Of the 370 children enrolled, 213 (57.7% <13 years old) provided complete data. Of these, 34.7% had PPCS at 1 month post-injury (38.2% of children <13 years and 30.0% ≥13 years of age, P = 0.272). The adjusted ORs from multiple logistic regression models, for number and severity of symptoms, and for the SAC and mBESS performance in both the ChildSCAT3/SCAT3, were all not significant. The area under the curve of receiver operator characteristic curves for all analysed ChildSCAT3/SCAT3 components was below 0.6. CONCLUSIONS: Although SCAT3 and ChildSCAT3 are recommended tools to assist with concussion diagnosis and monitoring of patient recovery, their use in the ED does not seem to help predict PPCS.

Objective: To investigate somatic and cognitive postconcussive symptoms (PCS) using the symptom evaluation subtest (cSCAT3-SE) of the Child Sports Concussion Assessment Tool 3 (Child SCAT) in tracking PCS up to 2 weeks postinjury.Methods: A total of 96 participants aged 5 to 12 years (Mage = 9.55, SD = 2.20) completed three assessment time points: 48 h postinjury (T0), 2 to 4 days postinjury (T1), and 2 weeks postinjury (T2). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze differences between cognitive and somatic symptoms over time, while the Friedman test was used to analyze differences within symptom type over time.Results: Cognitive PCS were found to be significantly higher than somatic PCS at all assessment time points and were also found to significantly decline from 4 days onwards postinjury; in contrast, somatic PCS significantly declined as early as 48 hpostinjury.Discussion: Differences between cognitive and somatic PCS emerge as early as a few days postinjury, with cognitive PCS being more persistent than somatic PCS across 2 weeks. Research in symptom-specific interventions may be of benefit in helping young children manage severe PCS as early as 2 weeks postinjury.

PURPOSE: To assess the impact on ankle stability after repairing the ATFL alone compared to repairing both the ATFL and CFL in a biomechanical cadaver model. METHODS: Ten matched pairs of intact, fresh frozen human cadaver ankles (normal) were mounted to a test machine in 20.0° plantar flexion and 15.0° of internal rotation. Each ankle was loaded to body weight and then tested from 0.0° to 20.0° of inversion. The data recorded were torque at 20.0° and stiffness, peak pressure and contact area in the ankle joint using a Tekscan sensor, rotation of the talus and calcaneus, and translation of the calcaneus using a three-dimensional motion capture system. Ankles then underwent sectioning of the ATFL and CFL (injured), retested, then randomly assigned to ATFL-only Broström repair or combined ATFL and CFL repair. Testing was repeated after repair then loaded in inversion to failure (LTF). RESULTS: The stiffness of the ankle was not significantly increased compared to the injured condition by repairing the ATFL only (n.s.) or the ATFL/CFL (n.s.). The calcaneus had significantly more rotation than the injured condition in the ATFL-only repair (p = 0.037) but not in the ATFL/CFL repair (n.s.). The ATFL failed at 40.3% higher torque than the CFL, at 17.4 ± 7.0 N m and 12.4 ± 4.1 N m, respectively, and 62.0% more rotation, at 43.9 ± 5.6° and 27.1 ± 6.8°, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There was a greater increase in stiffness following combined ATFL/CFL repair compared to ATFL-only repair, although this did not reach statistical significance. The CFL fails before the ATFL, potentially indicating its vulnerability immediately following repair. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III, case-control therapeutic study.

RESUMEN

Future healthcare systems will rely heavily on clinical decision support systems (CDSS) to improve the decision-making processes of clinicians. To explore the design of future CDSS, we developed a research-focused CDSS for the management of patients in the intensive care unit that leverages Internet of Things (IoT) devices capable of collecting streaming physiologic data from ventilators and other medical devices. We then created machine learning (ML) models that could analyze the collected physiologic data to determine if the ventilator was delivering potentially harmful therapy and if a deadly respiratory condition, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), was present. We also present work to aggregate these models into a mobile application that can provide responsive, real-time alerts of changes in ventilation to providers. As illustrated in the recent COVID-19 pandemic, being able to accurately predict ARDS in newly infected patients can assist in prioritizing care. We show that CDSS may be used to analyze physiologic data for clinical event recognition and automated diagnosis, and we also highlight future research avenues for hospital CDSS.

The recruitment of neutrophils to sites of inflammatory insult is a hallmark of the innate immune response. Neutrophil recruitment is regulated by a multistep process that includes cell rolling, activation, adhesion, and transmigration through the endothelium commonly referred to as the leukocyte adhesion cascade. After selectin-mediated braking, neutrophils migrate along the activated vascular endothelium on which ligands, including intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), are expressed. Previous studies have shown that two cells that commonly home from blood vessel to tissue-T cells and hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells-use the integrin lymphocyte functional antigen-1 (LFA-1) to migrate against the direction of shear flow once adherent on ICAM-1 surfaces. Like T cells and hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, neutrophils express LFA-1, but they also express macrophage-1 antigen (Mac-1), which binds to ICAM-1. Previous reports have shown that neutrophils will not migrate against the direction of flow on ICAM-1, but we hypothesized this was due to the influence of Mac-1. Here, we report that both the HL-60 neutrophil-like cell line and primary human neutrophils can migrate against the direction of fluid flow on ICAM-1 surfaces via LFA-1 if Mac-1 is blocked; otherwise, they migrate downstream. We demonstrate this both on ICAM-1 surfaces and on activated endothelium. In sum, both LFA-1 and Mac-1 binding ICAM-1 play a critical role in determining the direction of neutrophil migration along the endothelium, and their interaction may play an important role in controlling neutrophil trafficking during inflammation.

Using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we monitor the competition between tri- n-butylphosphine (Bu3P) and various amine and phosphine ligands for the surface of chloride terminated CdSe nanocrystals. Distinct 31P NMR signals for free and bound phosphine ligands allow the surface ligand coverage to be measured in phosphine solution. Ligands with a small steric profile achieve higher surface coverages (Bu3P = 0.5 nm-2, Me2P- n-octyl = 2.0 nm-2, NH2Bu = >3 nm-2) and have greater relative binding affinity for the nanocrystal (binding affinity: Me3P > Me2P- n-octyl ∼ Me2P- n-octadecyl > Et3P > Bu3P). Among phosphines, only Bu3P and Me2P- n-octyl support a colloidal dispersion, allowing a relative surface binding affinity ( Krel) to be estimated in that case ( Krel = 3.1). The affinity of the amine ligands is measured by the extent to which they displace Bu3P from the nanocrystals ( Krel: H2NBu ∼ N- n-butylimidazole > 4-ethylpyridine > Bu3P ∼ HNBu2 > Me2NBu > Bu3N). The affinity for the CdSe surface is greatest among soft, basic donors and depends on the number of each ligand that bind. Sterically unencumbered ligands such as imidazole, pyridine, and n-alkylamines can therefore outcompete stronger donors such as alkylphosphines. The influence of repulsive interactions between ligands on the binding affinity is a consequence of the high atom density of binary semiconductor surfaces. The observed behavior is distinct from the self-assembly of straight-chain surfactants on gold and silver where the ligands are commensurate with the underlying lattice and attractive interactions between aliphatic chains strengthen the binding.

The ability to manipulate quantum dot (QD) surfaces is foundational to their technological deployment. Surface manipulation of metal halide perovskite (MHP) QDs has proven particularly challenging in comparison to that of more established inorganic materials due to dynamic surface species and low material formation energy; most conventional methods of chemical manipulation targeted at the MHP QD surface will result in transformation or dissolution of the MHP crystal. In previous work, we have demonstrated record-efficiency QD solar cells (QDSCs) based on ligand-exchange procedures that electronically couple MHP QDs yet maintain their nanocrystalline size, which stabilizes the corner-sharing structure of the constituent PbI64- octahedra with optoelectronic properties optimal for solar energy conversion. In this work, we employ a variety of spectroscopic techniques to develop a molecular-level understanding of the MHP QD surface chemistry in this system. We individually target both the anionic (oleate) and cationic (oleylammonium) ligands. We find that atmospheric moisture aids the process by hydrolysis of methyl acetate to generate acetic acid and methanol. Acetic acid then replaces native oleate ligands to yield QD surface-bound acetate and free oleic acid. The native oleylammonium ligands remain throughout this film deposition process and are exchanged during a final treatment step employing smaller cations-namely, formamidinium. This final treatment has a narrow processing window; initial treatment at this stage leads to a more strongly coupled QD regime followed by transformation into a bulk MHP film after longer treatment. These insights provide chemical understanding to the deposition of high-quality, electronically coupled MHP QD films that maintain both quantum confinement and their crystalline phase and attain high photovoltaic performance.

We study nonlinear spin motion in one-dimensional magnetic chains. We find significant differences from the classic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) problem examining nonlinear elastic motion in a chain. We find that FPU behavior, the transfer of energy among low order eigenmodes, does not occur in magnetic systems with only exchange and external fields, but does exist if a uniaxial anisotropy is also present. The FPU behavior may be altered or turned off through the magnitude and orientation of an external magnetic field. A realistic micromagnetic model shows such behavior could be measurable.
