RESUMEN

The main aim of this paper is to present an innovative approach to addressing the challenges of smart mobility exploiting digital twins within the METACITIES initiative. We have worked on this issue due to the increasing complexity of urban transportation systems, coupled with the urgent need to improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability in cities. The work presented in this paper is part of the project METACITIES, an Excellence Hub that spans a large geographical area, that of Southeastern Europe. The approach of the Greek innovation ecosystem of METACITIES involves leveraging digital twin technology to create intelligent replicas of urban mobility environments, enabling real-time monitoring, analysis, and decision making. Through use cases such as "Smart Parking", "Environmental Behavior Analysis on Traffic Incidents", and "Emergency Management", we demonstrate how digital twins can optimize traffic flow, mitigate environmental impact, and enhance emergency response; these use cases will be tested on a small scale, before deciding on implementation at a larger and more expensive scale. The final outcome is the METACITIES Architecture for smart mobility, which will be part of an Open Digital Twin Framework capable of evolving a smart city into a metacity.

During the last few years, medical research areas of critical importance such as Epilepsy monitoring and study, increasingly utilize wireless sensor network technologies in order to achieve better understanding and significant breakthroughs. However, the limited memory and communication bandwidth offered by WSN platforms comprise a significant shortcoming to such demanding application scenarios. Although, data compression can mitigate such deficiencies there is a lack of objective and comprehensive evaluation of relative approaches and even more on specialized approaches targeting specific demanding applications. The research work presented in this paper focuses on implementing and offering an in-depth experimental study regarding prominent, already existing as well as novel proposed compression algorithms. All algorithms have been implemented in a common Matlab framework. A major contribution of this paper, that differentiates it from similar research efforts, is the employment of real world Electroencephalography (EEG) and Electrocardiography (ECG) datasets comprising the two most demanding Epilepsy modalities. Emphasis is put on WSN applications, thus the respective metrics focus on compression rate and execution latency for the selected datasets. The evaluation results reveal significant performance and behavioral characteristics of the algorithms related to their complexity and the relative negative effect on compression latency as opposed to the increased compression rate. It is noted that the proposed schemes managed to offer considerable advantage especially aiming to achieve the optimum tradeoff between compression rate-latency. Specifically, proposed algorithm managed to combine highly completive level of compression while ensuring minimum latency thus exhibiting real-time capabilities. Additionally, one of the proposed schemes is compared against state-of-the-art general-purpose compression algorithms also exhibiting considerable advantages as far as the compression rate is concerned.

RESUMEN

In this article we present the main results obtained in the ARTEMIS-JU WSN-DPCM project between October 2011 and September 2015. The first objective of the project was the development of an integrated toolset for Wireless sensor networks (WSN) application planning, development, commissioning and maintenance, which aims to support application domain experts, with limited WSN expertise, to efficiently develop WSN applications from planning to lifetime maintenance. The toolset is made of three main tools: one for planning, one for application development and simulation (which can include hardware nodes), and one for network commissioning and lifetime maintenance. The tools are integrated in a single platform which promotes software reuse by automatically selecting suitable library components for application synthesis and the abstraction of the underlying architecture through the use of a middleware layer. The second objective of the project was to test the effectiveness of the toolset for the development of two case studies in different domains, one for detecting the occupancy state of parking lots and one for monitoring air concentration of harmful gasses near an industrial site.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of fatigue on electromyographic (EMG) parameters of healthy young adults during obstacle crossing of two different heights. Twelve untrained male adults (23 ± 5 years of age) were fatigued running on a treadmill with increasing speed and inclination and walked over an obstacle with a height set at 10% and 20% of each individual's lower limb length. Maximal plantar flexor torque and EMG of the medial gastrocnemius, soleus, and tibialis anterior muscles of the trailing limb were assessed during obstacle crossing. Data were captured before, immediately after and 5 minutes after a fatigue session. Fatigue induced significant reduction on the plantar flexor torque output immediately after and 5 minutes after exhaustion. After fatigue gait speed was not affected, the minimum distance between the obstacle and the trailing or leading foot remained unchanged, and the trailing foot contacted the ground closer to the obstacle immediately after fatigue. Regarding the EMG, medial gastrocnemius became after fatigue more active during swing phase when increasing the obstacle height, whereas this was not the case before or 5 minutes after fatigue. No other significant difference was observed for any of the examined muscles. It is concluded that the assessed fatigue protocol induced only minimal changes in the EMG activity of the examined muscles during obstacle crossing. Therefore, it is suggested that the neuromuscular system of healthy young individuals is able to respond to the decreased force capacity after fatigue during obstacle crossing of heights up to the 20% of the limb length. A blunt renal trauma (RT) diagnosis can present challenges. It demands increased clinical suspicion, taking into consideration patient history, mechanism of injury, and clinical and laboratory findings. Final diagnosis may be confirmed radiographically or intraoperatively. A thin, 22-year-old female with severe right flank pain appeared ambulatory in the emergency department. The pain appeared 1 h previously, following a common incident in a city bus, where the patient was as a standing passenger. The bus was moving in an urban area at low speed and decelerated rapidly. Another standing passenger fell on the patient, causing her right flank area to be compressed onto the bus banister for a few seconds. Clinical findings were insignificant. Laboratory examinations revealed only a nonvisible hematuria. Chest X-ray and abdominal ultrasonography were normal. Due to pain severity, an abdominal computed tomography scan was performed and revealed a grade-4, parenchymal RT with extravasation of contrast medium in delayed images. The patient underwent double-J stent insertion and had an uneventful recovery. She presented no complications at 5 mo postinjury. Major RT can be a result of an insignificant, blunt injury in a thin patient; thus, taking into consideration body habitus is of paramount importance in diagnostic evaluation.

Langerhans cells (LC) migrate rapidly from epidermis to lymph node following epicutaneous application of antigen. In this study, we have explored the role of IL-18, a cytokine with structural similarities to IL-1 beta, in murine LC migration and contact hypersensitivity (CHS), which to oxazolone (OX) and 2-4,dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) was suppressed significantly in IL-18 knockout (IL-18-/-) mice and could be rescued by local intradermal administration of IL-18 prior to sensitization, suggesting that the defect in these mice was in the afferent phase of CHS. To determine the effect of IL-18 on LC migration, mice were treated topically with OX or DNFB, and remaining LC numbers were assessed. A significant decline in remaining epidermal LC occurred in wild-type (WT) mice but did not occur in IL-18-/- mice. Sodium lauryl sulfate, a nonantigenic LC migratory stimulus, induced equivalent LC migration in IL-18-/- and WT mice. In IL-18-/- mice, IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha were equally able to mobilize LC from epidermis, indicating that migration in response to these cytokines is not dependent on IL-18 and suggesting that IL-18 acts upstream of these cytokines in the initiation of antigen-induced LC migration. Moreover, IL-1 beta but not IL-18 was able to rescue the defective CHS response observed in caspase-1-/- mice, which have no functional IL-1 beta or IL-18. These data indicate that IL-18 is a key proximal mediator of LC migration and CHS, acting upstream of IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha, and may play a central role in regulation of cutaneous immune responses.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the postactivation potentiation effect after a heavy resistance stimulus (HRS) on running speed (RS). Fifteen amateur team game players (basketball, volleyball, handball, and soccer players), ages 18-23 years running the 30-m dash and the intermediate phase of 0-10 and 0-30 m sprints, were used to evaluate RS. Resistance training consisted of 10 single repetitions at 90% of 1 repetition maximum. The running tests were performed 3 times--(a) 3 minutes prior the HRS, (b) 3 minutes after the HRS, and (c) 5 minutes after the HRS--in separated training sessions. Results showed that RS was not affected 3 minutes after the resistance training, but it increased for both selected running phases (0-10 and 0-30 m) 5 minutes after the HRS (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that heavy resistance exercise improves 10- and 30-m sprint performance when performed 5 minutes after the exercise bout.

Interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha) is a potent proinflammatory cytokine constitutively expressed by keratinocytes, which also synthesize a specific inhibitor of IL-1 activity, intracellular IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra). Although homeostatic regulation of the IL-1 system in keratinocytes has long been suspected, there is currently little evidence for this. To explore this issue, the PAM212 murine keratinocyte cell line was exposed to increasing concentrations of either IL-1alpha or IL-1ra and the opposing ligand was assessed by ELISA. Release of IL-1ra was induced following stimulation by murine IL-1alpha in a concentration-dependent manner and, conversely, IL-1ra stimulation increased IL-1alpha release. To determine whether a similar homeostatic circuit operates in vivo, epidermis from transgenic mice in which overexpression of IL-1alpha or IL-1ra was targeted to keratinocytes was analyzed. Epidermal sheets derived from IL-1alpha transgenic mice released eight times more IL-1ra than those from wild-type mice following ex vivo culture and similarly, IL-1alpha release was increased 3-4-fold in epidermal sheets derived from IL-1ra transgenic epidermis, Use of specific neutralizing antibodies against type I and type II IL-1 receptors indicated that the counter-regulation mechanism is mediated extracellularly through the type I IL-1 receptor alone. Taken together, these observations provide the first demonstration of mutual counter-regulation of IL-1 receptor ligands in keratinocytes.

RESUMEN

The concept of perfectly matched layer (PML) has been proven very effective in absorbing electromagnetic waves in lossless media. An extension of this method and a complete three-dimensional (3-D) scheme properly suited for finite-difference, time-domain (FDTD) modeling of acoustic propagation and scattering in unbounded problems are presented in this paper. This generalized PML is constructed in such a way that it performs significant absorption of traveling waves in acoustics for both lossless and lossy media. Theoretically, no reflections occur when propagating waves encounter the lossy medium-PML interface, no matter what the angle of incidence is, introducing at the same time the possibility for further wave attenuation via the stretched coordinates idea. Numerical results support the suggested PML theory as well as reveal the proper modifications, which lead to the achievement of the optimum absorbing-boundary condition.

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin (IL)-1beta, and IL-18 are all known to contribute to the regulation of epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) migration and the subsequent accumulation of dendritic cells (DC) in draining lymph nodes following skin sensitization. However, the cytokine signals that control these responses following skin irritation have yet to be defined. We demonstrate that IL-1alpha, a cytokine associated with skin injury and inflammation, is able to stimulate the activation and migration from the epidermis of LC and their subsequent accumulation in skin-draining lymph nodes. Stimulation of these responses by IL-1alpha required the local availability of TNF-alpha. Using specific neutralizing antibodies, LC migration induced following skin sensitization with oxazolone (Ox) was found to be dependent upon IL-1beta and independent of a requirement for IL-1alpha. However, the converse was true following stimulation of responses with the nonsensitizing skin irritant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Here, the loss of LC from the epidermis and the accumulation of DC in draining lymph nodes required IL-1alpha and not IL-1beta. Despite utilizing different IL-1 isoforms for LC mobilization, the phenotypic characteristics of DC arriving in draining lymph nodes in response to Ox and SLS were similar with respect to the membrane determinants MHC class II, B7-1, B7-2, and intercellular adhesion molecule-1. These data suggest that contact sensitization and skin irritation employ subtly different cytokine networks in the regulation of LC migration, both involving TNF-alpha but demonstrating differential requirements for IL-1 cytokines. The proposal is that different forms of cutaneous trauma may achieve LC migration through distinct molecular mechanisms.
