Exposure to UV radiation is a major risk factor for the development of malignant skin neoplasms. Currently, there are no studies available on sun-exposure habits among different countries. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among medical students from the University of Rome, Italy and the University of Granada, Spain to compare their photoprotection knowledge, habits, and attitudes. A total of 215 medical students (114 Spanish, and 101 Italian) were included. Spanish students considered the Sun to be the main cause of skin cancer (83.3% vs 61.4%, P=.003) and they looked at their skin more often than Italian students did (32.5% vs 9.9%, P <.001). The latter received information on photoprotection mainly from their dermatologist (34.7%, 35/101) vs Spaniards who received such information from their university (39.5%, 45/114; P <.001). After studying dermatology, Spaniards used sunscreen more frequently than Italians did (76.8% before vs 88.1% after; P=.007), and recognised the need to implement other measures as well (44.9% vs 67.2%; P=.025).

The use of yeasts as a feed supplement for cattle can promote animal development and performance. However, for the positive results to be consistent, strains with probiotic properties must be selected. The objective of this study was to isolate and identify yeasts present in the bovine feces and evaluate their probiotic potential together with strains previously isolated from the rumen (preliminary study). A total of 193 isolates were studied, including 139 isolates (19 species) from fecal samples from 11 different animals (Bos taurus and Bos indicus) and 54 strains previously isolated from rumen fluid (Bos taurus). The yeast population in the feces ranged from 3.51 to 4.99 log CFU/g, with Candida pararugosa being the most abundant (isolated from the feces of six samples analysed). Isolates were selected that had negative results in the safety tests (hemolytic activity, DNAse, and gelatinase) and had percentages greater than 35 and 70% for hydrophobicity and auto-aggregation, respectively. In addition, selected isolates had percentages greater than 77.7 and 74.7% for coaggregation with pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens, respectively. The isolates with percentage growth at 39 °C greater than 64.6% and viability greater than 96.7% were selected for survival testing under bovine gastrointestinal conditions. After the tests, the seven best isolates were selected, belonging to the species Candida pararugosa (L60, CCMA 928 and CCMA 930) and Pichia kudriavzevii (L97, L100, CCMA904, CCMA 907). The selected isolates were exopolysaccharide producers. Based on the results of the evaluated properties, the seven selected isolates were classified as potential probiotics for cattle.

The objectives of this study were, firstly, to compare a conventional (i.e., chlorinated alkaline) versus an alternative (chlorinated alkaline plus enzymatic) treatment effectivity for the elimination of biofilms from different L. monocytogenes strains (CECT 5672, CECT 935, S2-bac and EDG-e). Secondly, to evaluate the cross-contamination to chicken broth from non-treated and treated biofilms formed on stainless steel surfaces. Results showed that all L. monocytogenes strains were able to adhere and develop biofilms at approximately the same growth levels (≈5.82 log CFU/cm2). When non-treated biofilms were put into contact with the model food, obtained an average transference rate of potential global cross-contamination of 20.4%. Biofilms treated with the chlorinated alkaline detergent obtained transference rates similar to non-treated biofilms as a high number of residual cells (i.e., around 4 to 5 Log CFU/cm2) were present on the surface, except for EDG-e strain on which transference rate diminished to 0.45%, which was related to the protective matrix. Contrarily, the alternative treatment was shown to not produce cross-contamination to the chicken broth due to its high effectivity for biofilm control (<0.50% of transference) except for CECT 935 strain that had a different behavior. Therefore, changing to more intense cleaning treatments in the processing environments can reduce risk of cross-contamination.

Alternatives to combat the persistence of pathogens need to consider the microbiota established on industrial surfaces as they can influence the protection or replacement (i.e. reduction/inhibition) of pathogens. The objective of the present study was to determine the ecological interactions established in dual-species biofilms between Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica as target pathogens, and isolates recovered from a meat processing facility (i.e.Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas fragi, Bacillus safensis, Bacillus megaterium, and Candida zeylanoides). Results showed different ecological relations in biofilms depending on the species evaluated. Pseudomonas spp. did not influence the growth of either pathogen, although tested species tended to protect the pathogens in the structures generated. B. megaterium and C. zeylanoides affected the two pathogens differently, demonstrating a reduction of L. monocytogenes adhered cells within the formed biofilm. B. safensis reduced or presented non-influence on S. enterica depending on the incubation conditions. Contrarily, B. safensis was the microorganism that demonstrated the highest replacement capacity for L. monocytogenes, reducing its growth by up to 4 log CFU/cm2. The in vitro study of bispecies biofilms is important for the food industry, helping to understand how they behave and to find an effective way to eliminate them.

We describe an analysis comparing the pp[over ¯] elastic cross section as measured by the D0 Collaboration at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV to that in pp collisions as measured by the TOTEM Collaboration at 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV using a model-independent approach. The TOTEM cross sections, extrapolated to a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV, are compared with the D0 measurement in the region of the diffractive minimum and the second maximum of the pp cross section. The two data sets disagree at the 3.4σ level and thus provide evidence for the t-channel exchange of a colorless, C-odd gluonic compound, also known as the odderon. We combine these results with a TOTEM analysis of the same C-odd exchange based on the total cross section and the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward elastic strong interaction scattering amplitude in pp scattering for which the significance is between 3.4σ and 4.6σ. The combined significance is larger than 5σ and is interpreted as the first observation of the exchange of a colorless, C-odd gluonic compound.

The main challenge of ensiling is conserving the feed through a fermentative process that results in high nutritional and microbiological quality while minimizing fermentative losses. This challenge is of growing interest to farmers, industry and research and involves the use of additives to improve the fermentation process and preserve the ensiled material. Most studies involved microbial additives; lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have been the focus of much research and have been widely used. Currently, LABs are used in modern and sustainable agriculture because of their considerable potential for enhancing human and animal health. Although the number of studies evaluating LABs in silages has increased, the potential use of these micro-organisms in association with silage has not been adequately studied. Fermentation processes using the same strain produce very different results depending on the unique characteristics of the substrate, so the choice of silage inoculant for different starting substrates is of extreme importance to maximize the nutritional quality of the final product. This review describes the current scenario of the bioprospecting and selection process for choosing the best LAB strain as an inoculant for ensiling. In addition, we analyse developments in the fermentation process and strategies and methods that will assist future studies on the selection of new strains of LAB as a starter culture or inoculant.

Cellulolytic micro-organisms are potent silage inoculants that decrease the fibrous content in silage and increase the fibre digestibility and nutritional value of silage. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Bacillus subtilis CCMA 0087 and its enzyme ß-glucosidase on the nutritional value and aerobic stability of corn silage after 30 and 60 days of storage. We compared the results among silage without inoculant (SC) and silages inoculated with B. subtilis 8 log10 CFU per kg forage (SB8), 9 log10 CFU per kg forage (SB9) and 9·84 log10 CFU per kg forage + ß-glucosidase enzyme (SBE). No differences were observed in the levels of dry matter, crude protein and neutral detergent fibre due to the different treatments or storage times of the silos. Notably, the population of spore-forming bacteria increased in the SB9-treated silage. At 60 days of ensiling, the largest populations of lactic acid bacteria were found in silages treated with SB8 and SBE. Yeast populations were low for all silages, irrespective of the different treatments, and the presence of filamentous fungi was observed only in the SBE-treated silage. Among all silage treatments, SB9 treatment resulted in the highest aerobic stability.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the mechanisms and timescales of plant pathogen outbreaks requires a detailed genome-scale analysis of their population history. The fungus Magnaporthe (Syn. Pyricularia) oryzae-the causal agent of blast disease of cereals- is among the most destructive plant pathogens to world agriculture and a major threat to the production of rice, wheat, and other cereals. Although M. oryzae is a multihost pathogen that infects more than 50 species of cereals and grasses, all rice-infecting isolates belong to a single genetically defined lineage. Here, we combined the two largest genomic datasets to reconstruct the genetic history of the rice-infecting lineage of M. oryzae based on 131 isolates from 21 countries. RESULTS: The global population of the rice blast fungus consists mainly of three well-defined genetic groups and a diverse set of individuals. Multiple population genetic tests revealed that the rice-infecting lineage of the blast fungus probably originated from a recombining diverse group in Southeast Asia followed by three independent clonal expansions that took place over the last ~ 200 years. Patterns of allele sharing identified a subpopulation from the recombining diverse group that introgressed with one of the clonal lineages before its global expansion. Remarkably, the four genetic lineages of the rice blast fungus vary in the number and patterns of presence and absence of candidate effector genes. These genes encode secreted proteins that modulate plant defense and allow pathogen colonization. In particular, clonal lineages carry a reduced repertoire of effector genes compared with the diverse group, and specific combinations of presence and absence of effector genes define each of the pandemic clonal lineages. CONCLUSIONS: Our analyses reconstruct the genetic history of the rice-infecting lineage of M. oryzae revealing three clonal lineages associated with rice blast pandemics. Each of these lineages displays a specific pattern of presence and absence of effector genes that may have shaped their adaptation to the rice host and their evolutionary history.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous investigations show that bilinguals exhibit the first symptoms of dementia 4-5 years later than monolinguals. Therefore, bilingualism has been proposed as a cognitive reserve mechanism. Recent studies have advanced towards an understanding of the brain mechanisms underlying bilingualism's protection against dementia, but none of them deals with white matter (WM) diffusion. METHODS: In this study, the topic was investigated by measuring WM integrity in a sample of 35 bilinguals and 53 passive bilinguals with mild cognitive impairment. RESULTS: No significant differences were found between the groups in cognitive level, education, age or sex. However, bilinguals showed higher mean diffusivity in the fornix, but higher fractional anisotropy, lower mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity and radial diffusivity in the parahippocampal cingulum, and lower radial diffusivity in the right uncinate fasciculus. Significant correlations were also found between WM integrity in the left parahippocampal cingulum and the Boston Naming Test in passive bilinguals. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that bilingualism contributes to a differential pattern of WM disintegration due to mild cognitive impairment in fibers related to bilingualism and memory.

Advances in micro-organism identification techniques have resulted in increased knowledge of the diversity of prokaryotes and eukaryotes in silage. Such knowledge has enhanced the understanding of how fermentation occurs in forage crops with different characteristics and how the process can be improved to enhance silage quality. Undesirable micro-organisms can grow in silage when fermentation does not occur properly. Such micro-organisms may be pathogenic and/or produce toxic metabolic compounds; however, information on the consequences of these metabolites on the health of animals that consume silage is still lacking. The major challenge of ensilage is to produce high-quality feed that is nutritional, sanitary and stable, with a high dry matter recovery rate, in a process involving no interventions during fermentation and considerable variation in the characteristics of the substrates. It is important to note that each substrate has particularities and that we can only improve fermentation if we fully understand microbial diversity. This review is intended to update information related to the fermentation profile of silage, focusing on microbial diversity.

AIMS: The aim was to isolate, identify and characterize yeasts present in rumen fluid and to select strains showing potential as probiotics. METHODS AND RESULTS: Rumen fluid was sampled from 4 herds of dairy and beef cattle and 77 yeast isolates were identified. Initial screening was based on the capacity to maintain viability in a medium with different ruminal conditions. A second screening in fresh rumen fluid to assess the growth of inoculated yeasts and evaluate in vitro neutral detergent fibre digestibility (NDF-D), pH and acid accumulation was conducted. The yeast population ranged from 3·84 to 6·76 log10 CFU per ml. The main species of yeast found were Pichia kudriavzevii, Candida rugosa, C. pararugosa, C. ethanolica and Magnusiomyces capitatus. Strains CCMA 933 (C. rugosa) and CCMA 970 (C. pararugosa) showed greater ability to survive in ruminal fluid and stimulated the production of acids. Isolate CCMA 967 (C. ethanolica) survived and improved the NDF-D. CONCLUSION: Pichia kudriavzevii was the dominant yeast found in the cattle herds. Strains CCMA 933, CCMA 970 and CCMA 967 showed properties that could be useful as potential probiotics for cattle. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study was the first to select yeasts from the rumen fluid, with the potential to be used as probiotic, based on the ruminal conditions.

We present a measurement of the effective weak mixing angle parameter sin^{2}θ_{eff}^{ℓ} in pp[over ¯]→Z/γ^{*}→µ^{+}µ^{-} events at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and corresponding to 8.6 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity. The measured value of sin^{2}θ_{eff}^{ℓ}[µµ]=0.23016±0.00064 is further combined with the result from the D0 measurement in pp[over ¯]→Z/γ^{*}→e^{+}e^{-} events, resulting in sin^{2}θ_{eff}^{ℓ}[comb]=0.23095±0.00040. This combined result is the most precise measurement from a single experiment at a hadron collider and is the most precise determination using the coupling of the Z/γ^{*} to light quarks.

The CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron have measured the asymmetry between yields of forward- and backward-produced top and antitop quarks based on their rapidity difference and the asymmetry between their decay leptons. These measurements use the full data sets collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. We report the results of combinations of the inclusive asymmetries and their differential dependencies on relevant kinematic quantities. The combined inclusive asymmetry is A_{FB}^{tt[over ¯]}=0.128±0.025. The combined inclusive and differential asymmetries are consistent with recent standard model predictions.

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the effect of grinding size (1, 2, 4, and 6 mm) to determine effective ruminal disappearance (ERD); (2) the most adequate method to estimate the rapidly degradable fraction (A); (3) a time point to measure the indigestible fraction (C); and (4) the viability of using fewer time points to estimate starch fractional disappearance rate (kd) of mature corn grain. Fraction A was determined by rinsing in a bucket or washing machine, rumen immersion followed by bucket or washing machine, and water immersion for 30 min followed by bucket or washing machine. Ruminal in situ incubations were performed at 48, 72, 96, and 120 h to determine fraction C, and at 0 (washing machine), 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 48 h to determine the kinetics of starch disappearance. Models were used with either 2 or 3 pools and kd was determined by the linear slope of the log-transformed bag residues as a proportion of incubated samples over time. The ERD was calculated as A + B [kd/(kd + kp)], where kp is the ruminal fractional passage rate = 16.0% h-1. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC) with the fixed effects of run (for fraction A analysis only) method (either washing or model), grinding size, and method by grinding size interaction, with cow as a random effect. Correlation between estimates calculated using all time points or combinations of 2 and 3 time points were determined using PROC CORR. Fraction A was reduced as grinding size increased, but was not altered by washing method. Samples ground at 6 mm had greater fraction C than other grinding sizes at 48, 72, or 96 h, but not at 120 h. Model affected the slowly degradable fraction (B) values solely, but the difference was minor (0.5 percentage units). Greater fractions B and C but reduced kd and ERD were observed as grinding size increased. Based on correlation analysis the 2-pool model, incubation times of 0, 3, and 48 h were suitable to evaluate ruminal starch degradation kinetics in mature corn. Ruminal in situ incubation at 120 h highlighted the lack of a fraction C of starch (0.13% of starch). Washing method did not affect determination of fraction A of starch. Ruminal in situ incubations of 0, 3, and 48 h for starch degradation kinetics using a 2-pool model were adequate for mature ground corn, but 120 h of incubation is suggested to confirm the existence or absence of a fraction C. Grinding size affected starch degradation kinetics and fraction A determination.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical and microbiological characteristics and to identify the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts involved in rehydrated corn kernel silage. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four replicates for each fermentation time: 5, 15, 30, 60, 90, 150, 210 and 280 days were prepared. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and PCR-based identification were utilized to identify LAB and yeasts. Eighteen bacteria and four yeast species were identified. The bacteria population reached maximum growth after 15 days and moulds were detected up to this time. The highest dry matter (DM) loss was 7·6% after 280 days. The low concentration of water-soluble carbohydrates (20 g kg-1 of DM) was not limiting for fermentation, although the reduction in pH and acid production occurred slowly. Storage of the rehydrated corn kernel silage increased digestibility up to day 280. CONCLUSIONS: This silage was dominated by LAB but showed a slow decrease in pH values. This technique of corn storage on farms increased the DM digestibility. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study was the first to evaluate the rehydrated corn kernel silage fermentation dynamics and our findings are relevant to optimization of this silage fermentation.

The objective of this study was to evaluate 2 systems for covering corn silage in bunker silos. The first system consisted of a sheet of 45-µm-thick oxygen barrier film (OB, polyethylene + ethylene-vinyl alcohol) placed along the length of the sidewall before filling. After filling, the excess film was pulled over the wall on top of the silage, and a sheet of polyethylene was placed on top. The second system involved using a standard sheet (ST) of 180-µm-thick polyethylene film. Eight commercial bunker silos were divided into 2 parts lengthwise so that one-half of the silo was covered with OB and the other half with a ST system. During the filling, 3 net bags with chopped corn were buried in the central part (halfway between the top and bottom of the silo) of the bunkers (CCOR) in 3 sections 10 m apart. After filling, 18 net bags (9 per covering system) were buried 40 cm below the top surface of the 3 sections. These bags were placed at 3 distances from the bunker walls (0 to 50 cm, 51 to 100 cm, and 101 to 150 cm). During unloading, the bags were removed from the silos to determine the dry matter (DM) losses, fermentation end products, and nutritive value. The Milk2006 spreadsheet was used to estimate milk per tonne of DM. The model included the fixed effect of treatment (7 different locations in the bunker) and the random effect of the silo. Two contrasts were tested to compare silages in the top laterals (shoulders) with that in the CCOR (CCOR vs. OB and CCOR vs. ST). Three contrasts compared the corresponding distances of the silage covered by the 2 systems (OB50 vs. ST50, OB100 vs. ST100 and OB150 vs. ST150). Variables were analyzed with the PROC MIXED procedure of the SAS at the 5% level. The OB method produced well-fermented silages, which were similar to CCOR, whereas the OB system showed less lactic acid and greater pH and mold counts compared with CCOR. The ST method had 116.2 kg of milk/t less than the CCOR, as the OB system and the CCOR were similar (1,258.3 and 1,294.0 kg/t, respectively). Regarding the distances from the walls, the effects were more pronounced from 0 to 101 cm. The OB50 and OB100 silages had better quality and lower mold counts and DM losses than ST50 and ST100. The OB system reduced DM and nutrient losses at the shoulders in farm bunker corn silages compared with no sidewall plastic. The OB film should lap onto the crop for at least 200 cm so that 150 cm are covered outward from the wall.

RESUMEN

SWINGS was a cooperation project between the European Union and India, aiming at implementing state of the art low-cost technologies for the treatment and reuse of domestic wastewater in rural areas of India. The largest wastewater treatment plant consists of a high-rate anaerobic system, followed by vertical and horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands with a treatment area of around 1,900 m2 and a final step consisting of solar-driven anodic oxidation (AO) and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection units allowing direct reuse of the treated water. The implementation and operation of two pilot plants in north (Aligarh Muslim University, AMU) and central India (Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, IGNTU) are shown in this study. The overall performance of AMU pilot plant during the first 7 months of operation showed organic matter removal efficiencies of 87% total suspended solids, 95% 5-day biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and 90% chemical oxygen demand, while Kjeldahl nitrogen removal reached 89%. The UV disinfection unit produces water for irrigation and toilet flushing with pathogenic indicator bacteria well below WHO guidelines. On the other hand, the AO disinfection unit implemented at IGNTU and operated for almost a year has been shown to produce an effluent of sufficient quality to be reused by the local population for agriculture and irrigation.

RESUMEN

We report evidence for a narrow structure, X(5568), in the decay sequence X(5568)→B_{s}^{0}π^{±}, B_{s}^{0}→J/ψϕ, J/ψ→µ^{+}µ^{-}, ϕ→K^{+}K^{-}. This is evidence for the first instance of a hadronic state with valence quarks of four different flavors. The mass and natural width of this state are measured to be m=5567.8±2.9(stat)_{-1.9}^{+0.9}(syst) MeV/c^{2} and Γ=21.9±6.4(stat)_{-2.5}^{+5.0}(syst) MeV/c^{2}. If the decay is X(5568)→B_{s}^{*}π^{±}→B_{s}^{0}γπ^{±} with an unseen γ, m(X(5568)) will be shifted up by m(B_{s}^{*})-m(B_{s}^{0})∼49 MeV/c^{2}. This measurement is based on 10.4 fb^{-1} of pp[over ¯] collision data at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider.

RESUMEN

We report evidence for the simultaneous production of J/ψ and ϒ mesons in 8.1 fb^{-1} of data collected at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab pp[over ¯] Tevatron Collider. Events with these characteristics are expected to be produced predominantly by gluon-gluon interactions. In this analysis, we extract the effective cross section characterizing the initial parton spatial distribution, σ_{eff}=2.2±0.7(stat)±0.9(syst) mb.
