RESUMEN

Thermoelectric materials are considered promising candidates for thermal energy conversion. This study presents the fabrication of Zn- and Ce-alloyed In2O3with a porous structure. The electrical conductivity was improved by the alloying effect and an ultra-low thermal conductivity was observed owing to the porous structure, which concomitantly provide a distinct enhancement ofZT. However, SiO2nanoparticle additives react with the matrix to form a third-phase impurity, which weakens the electrical conductivity and increases the thermal conductivity. A thermoelectric module was constructed for the purpose of thermal heat energy conversion. Our experimental results proved that both an enhancement in electrical conductivity and a suppression in thermal conductivity could be achieved through nano-engineering. This approach presents a feasible route to synthesize porous thermoelectric oxides, and provides insight into the effect of additives; moreover, this approach is a cost-effective method for the fabrication of thermoelectric oxides without traditional hot-pressing and spark-plasma-sintering processes.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an X-linked incompletely dominant enzyme deficiency that results from G6PD gene mutations. Women heterozygous for G6PD mutations exhibit variation in the loss of enzyme activity but the cause of this phenotypic variation is unclear. We determined DNA methylation and X-inactivation patterns in 71 G6PD-deficient female heterozygotes and 68 G6PD non-deficient controls with the same missense mutations (G6PD Canton c.1376G>T or Kaiping c.1388G>A) to correlate determinants with variable phenotypes. Specific CpG methylations within the G6PD promoter were significantly higher in G6PD-deficient heterozygotes than in controls. Preferential X-inactivation of the G6PD wild-type allele was determined in heterozygotes. The incidence of preferential X-inactivation was 86.2% in the deficient heterozygote group and 31.7% in the non-deficient heterozygote group. A significant negative correlation was observed between X-inactivation ratios of the wild-type allele and G6PD/6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD) ratios in heterozygous G6PD Canton (r=-0.657, p<0.001) or Kaiping (r=-0.668, p<0.001). Multivariate logistic regression indicated that heterozygotes with hypermethylation of specific CpG sites in the G6PD promoter and preferential X-inactivation of the wild-type allele were at risk of enzyme deficiency.

Despite continuation of some controversies, Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia nowadays, has been widely believed to derive mainly from excessive ß-amyloid (Aß) aggregation, that would increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induce neuroinflammation, leading to neuron loss and cognitive impairment. Existing drugs on Aß have been ineffective or offer only temporary relief at best, due to blood-brain barrier or severe side effects. The study employed thermal cycling-hyperthermia (TC-HT) to ease the Aß-induced cognitive impairments and compared its effect with continuous hyperthermia (HT) in vivo. It established an AD mice model via intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of Aß25-35, proving that TC-HT is much more effective in alleviating its performance decline in Y-maze and novel object recognition (NOR) tests, in comparison with HT. In addition, TC-HT also exhibits a better performance in decreasing the hippocampal Aß and ß-secretase (BACE1) expressions as well as the neuroinflammation markers-ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba-1) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) levels. Furthermore, the study finds that TC-HT can elevate more protein expressions of insulin degrading enzyme (IDE) and antioxidative enzyme superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) than HT. In sum, the study proves the potential of TC-HT in AD treatment, which can be put into application with the use of focused ultrasound (FUS).

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) pose a significant global health threat. In particular, Alzheimer disease, the most common type causing dementia, remains an incurable disease. Alzheimer disease is thought to be associated with an imbalance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in neurons, and scientists considered ROS modulation as a promising strategy for novel remedies. In the study, human neural cell line SH-SY5Y was used in probing the effect of combining noninvasive high-frequency low-intensity pulsed electric field (H-LIPEF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in protection against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced neuron damage. Our result finds that the combination approach has intensified the neuroprotective effect significantly, perhaps due to H-LIPEF and BDNF synergistically increasing the expression level of the phosphorylated epidermal growth factor receptor (p-EGFR), which induces the survival-related mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) proteins. The study confirmed the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and the downstream pro-survival and antioxidant proteins as the mechanism underlying neuron protection. These findings highlighted the potential of H-LIPEF combined with BDNF in the treatment of NDDs. Furthermore, BDNF-mimetic drugs combining with noninvasive H-LIPEF to patients is a promising approach worthy of further research. This points to strategies for selecting drugs to cooperate with electric fields in treating neurodegenerative disorders.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients have a high virological relapse rate after cessation of nucleos(t)ide analog (NA) treatment, but the clinical outcome remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the 96-week clinical outcomes and the risk factors for relapse in CHB after cessation of NAs. METHODS: This study was a prospective trial; 74 eligible patients were enrolled. The patients underwent NA cessation and follow-up according to the 2012 Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver Guideline. Symptoms, biochemical (aspartate aminotransferase [AST], alanine aminotransferase [ALT], total bilirubin, urea nitrogen, creatinine), virological data (hepatitis B surface antigen [HBsAg], hepatitis B e antigen [HBeAg], hepatitis B e antibody [HBeAb], hepatitis B virus [HBV] DNA levels), and color Doppler ultrasound examination results were recorded and analysed. RESULTS: After NA cessation, 19 cases were HBsAg-negative without relapse during the 96-week follow-up. Of the 55 cases of HBsAg-positive after cessation, four types of clinical outcomes were observed. Twelve patients had no relapse during the 96-week follow-up (type A, 21.8%), 7 patients underwent virological relapses but spontaneously had a non-virological relapse (type B, 12.7%), 10 patients maintained virological relapse (type C, 18.2%), and 26 patients turned to clinical relapse, received NA retreatment, and achieved ALT normalization and negative conversion of HBV DNA within 12 months (type D, 47.3%). The 2-year overall cumulative rates of virological and clinical relapses were 58.1% and 24.3%, respectively. Independent factors associated with virological relapse were duration of negative HBV DNA, EOT (end of treatment) HBsAg, and original status of HBeAg. The EOT HBsAg was also an independent factor for clinical relapse. CONCLUSIONS: There are four types of clinical outcomes in patients with CHB after cessation of NA treatment. Further research is needed to explore the mechanism of different clinical outcomes. The EOT HBsAg level is an independent factor associated with both virological and clinical relapse.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) may be a solution for predicting adverse outcomes in emergency department (ED) patients with pneumonia; however, this issue remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted this study to clarify it. METHODS: We identified 52,626 adult ED patients with pneumonia from three hospitals between 2010 and 2019 for this study. Thirty-three feature variables from electronic medical records were used to construct an artificial intelligence (AI) model to predict sepsis or septic shock, respiratory failure, and mortality. After comparisons of the predictive accuracies among logistic regression, random forest, support-vector machine (SVM), light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM), multilayer perceptron (MLP), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), we selected the best one to build the model. We further combined the AI model with the Internet of things as AIoT, added an interactive mode, and implemented it in the hospital information system to assist clinicians with decision making in real time. We also compared the AIoT-based model with the confusion-urea-respiratory rate-blood pressure-65 (CURB-65) and pneumonia severity index (PSI) for predicting mortality. RESULTS: The best AI algorithms were random forest for sepsis or septic shock (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.781), LightGBM for respiratory failure (AUC = 0.847), and mortality (AUC = 0.835). The AIoT-based model represented better performance than CURB-65 and PSI indicators for predicting mortality (0.835 vs. 0.681 and 0.835 vs. 0.728). CONCLUSIONS: A real-time interactive AIoT-based model might be a better tool for predicting adverse outcomes in ED patients with pneumonia. Further validation in other populations is warranted.

Aims: The aim is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Sofosbuvir- (SOF-) based direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) treatment for patients with genotype (GT) 3/6 hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Methods: Patients infected with GT 3/6 HCV and treated with SOF-based DAAs were enrolled in this prospective, open, single-center, and real-world study. Drugs included Sofosbuvir (SOF), Velpatasvir (VEL), Daclatasvir (DCV), and Ribavirin (RBV). The treatment regimens included SOF + RBV for 24 weeks, SOF + DCV ± RBV for 12/24 weeks, and SOF/VEL ± RBV for 12 weeks. Results: A total of 54 patients were included. Age was 42.5 ± 10.4 years. Baseline HCV RNA was 6.29 ± 0.89log10 IU/mL. The numbers of GT 3a, 3b, and 6a patients were 10, 12, and 32, respectively. The numbers of chronic hepatitis, compensated cirrhosis, and decompensated cirrhosis patients were 39, 9, and 6, respectively. In patients with chronic hepatitis C and liver cirrhosis, sustained virological response 12 weeks after the end of treatment (SVR12) was 97.4% and 96.7%, respectively, and rapid virological response (RVR) was 75.0% and 57.1%, respectively. SVR12 of GT3a, GT3b, and GT6a was 100%, 83.3%, and 97%, respectively. ALT normality rate in chronic hepatitis group is higher than that in cirrhosis group at 4 weeks of treatment (89.7% versus 60.0%, p = 0.033) and at 12 weeks after EOT (94.9% versus 66.7%, p = 0.021). The overall incidence rate of adverse events was 44.4%, with fatigue being the most common (13.0%). Conclusion: SOF-based DAAs regimen can achieve ideal SVR12 for Chinese patients with both GT3a and GT6a HCV infection. The tolerance and safety of SOF-based DAAs regimen are good.

OBJECTIVE: To study the predictive value of ALT, HBeAg and HBV DNA levels at baseline and HBV DNA levels at week 12 adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) treatment to the efficacy of it at week 52 in patients with HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B (CHB). METHODS: Ninety-eight HBeAg-positive CHB patients with serum HBV DNA>or=1x10(6) copies/ml and ALT levels between 1.5 to 10 times of upper limits of normal (ULN) were enrolled in the study. Ten mg/d of ADV was administered for 52 weeks. Line serum samples were collected for measuring HBV DNA and HBV markers. The efficacy of the treatment at week 52 was evaluated in patients with different ALT, HBeAg and HBV DNA levels at baseline and HBV DNA levels at week 12 after treatment. RESULTS: At week 52 of ADV treatment, the rates of HBV DNA<10(3) were 72.7%, 66.7% and 53.0% respectively in patients with ALT>5xULN, HBeAg350 s/co (30.2%, P<0.01) and HBV DNA>10(8) copies/ml (34.4%, P<0.05) at baseline. HBeAg seroconversion rates were 42.2% and 7.5% (P<0.01) in patients with HBeAg titer350 S/co at baseline. In patients with HBV DNA<10(3), 10(3)-10(5) and >10(5) copies/ml at week 12, the ratios of them with HBV DNA<10(3) less than 1000 copies/ml at week 52 were 82.6%, 57.1% and 17.5% and significant differences were found between these groups (P<0.05); HBeAg seroconversion rates were 52.2%, 25.7% and 5.0% (P<0.05); ALT normalization rates were 100%, 83% and 75%, significantly higher in patients with HBV DNA<10(3) copies/ml than those with HBV DNA>10(5) copies/ml (P<0.05) at week 12. HBV DNA and HBeAg seroconversion at week 52 correlated with HBV DNA levels at week 12 (r=0.6 and r=0.5 respectively, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: In HBeAg-positive CHB patients treated with adefovir dipivoxil, HBV DNA levels at week 12 can be used to predict the efficacy at week 52. HBV DNA<10(3) copies/ml at week 12 predict a better treatment result at week 52.

Background and Aims: We aimed to ascertain the feasibility and safety of NA cessation, the status of patients after cessation, and the predictive factors for relapse and subsequent retreatment. Methods: A total of 92 patients were enrolled in this prospective study. Patients were monitored every month for the first 3 months after cessation and every 3 months thereafter. Results: Sixty-two patients finished 48 weeks of follow-up. None died or developed liver failure, cirrhosis, or HCC. The 62 patients could be divided into 4 categories according to the 48-week clinical development of relapse. Virologic relapses occurred in 39 (62.9%) patients, with 72.7% occurring in the first 24 weeks in origin HBeAg positive patients and 82.4% in the first 12 weeks in origin HBeAg negative patients. Age (OR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.02-1.10; p = 0.003), the HBsAg level (OR = 2.21, 95% CI = 1.47-3.32; p < 0.001), and positive origin HBeAg status (OR = 0.32, 95% CI = 0.14-0.74; p = 0.008) were predictive factors to virologic relapse. HBV DNA level (OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.13-1.58; p < 0.001) was predictive factor to retreatment. Conclusions: NA cessation is safe under supervision. Age, HBsAg level, and origin HBeAg status can be predictive factors for virologic relapse. OBJECTIVE: Up to now, little was known about the immunological changes of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients treated with direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs); we try to explore the effect of DAAs on the frequency of monocytes, NK cells, and cytokines that promote their activation. METHODS: 15 treatment-naive CHC patients and 10 healthy controls were recruited. Patients were examined before DAAs therapy (0 w) and at week 4 (4 w) and week 12 (12 w) of therapy. Percentage of monocytes and NK cells of the peripheral blood was analyzed by flow cytometry. Serum cytokines IL-12, IL-18, CXCL10, CXCL11, sCD14, and sCD163 were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: The frequency of CD3-CD16+CD56+ NK cells and classic CD14++CD16- monocytes decreased, while CD14+CD16+ monocytes and cytokines IL-12, IL-18, CXCL10, CXCL11, sCD14, and sCD163 increased at 0 w compared to healthy controls. During DAAs treatment, the decreased NK cells and classic monocytes gradually increased to normal levels; the increased inflammatory monocytes and cytokines IL-12 and CXCL11 decreased to normal levels, but the increased cytokines IL-18, CXCL10, sCD14, and sCD163 still remained at high levels at 12 w though they decreased rapidly from 0 w. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that DAAs treatment attenuated the activation of monocytes and NK cells in CHC patients. Trial registration number is NCT03063723.

Few studies have conducted follow-up investigations of the clinical course in HCV-related cirrhotic patients who achieved a sustained virological response (SVR) with pegylated interferon plus ribavirin treatment (PegIFN + RBV). We investigated the clinical course and laboratory data in a prospective cohort study enrolling HCV-related cirrhotic patients who received PegIFN + RBV between August 2008 and July 2013 in China. Complete blood counts, liver function tests, and HCV-RNA were serially examined. Liver-related complications were recorded. To detect hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), alpha-fetoprotein assays, and ultrasound scans were repeated at 6-month intervals. Twenty-five patients were enrolled, including 8 patients with decompensation events before treatment. Eighteen patients achieved SVR with a mean follow-up period of 25.78 months. During the follow-up period, only one patient exhibited HCV-RNA positivity and no decompensation events were detected, but 4 patients developed HCC after SVR. APRI decreased more in patients with SVR than in patients with non-SVR (median, -1.33 versus 0.86, P < 0.001). The albumin levels and platelet counts significantly increased during the follow-up period after SVR (44.27 ± 4.09 versus 42.63 ± 4.37, P = 0.037 and 173.89 ± 87.36 versus 160.11 ± 77.97, P = 0.047). These data indicated that HCV-related cirrhotic patients with SVR after PegIFN + RBV may have a favorable clinical course and improvements in laboratory data. Moreover, HCC should be monitored.

[structure: see text] A novel host material for efficient green and red electrophosphorescence devices is obtained by adopting the new molecular strategy of nonconjugated linkage of carbazole and fluorene moieties. The new host combines characteristics of both carbazole and fluorene, giving a large-gap host material suitable for green and red phosphorescent OLEDs. Green and red phosphoresecent OLEDs with external quantum efficiencies up to 10% have been achieved with this new host material.

OBJECTIVE: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an independent predictor of morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. It remains unclear whether efforts to correct anemia in patients with mild-to-moderate chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) can reverse LVH. This prospective multi-center Chinese cohort study evaluates left ventricular mass index (LVMI) evolution in anemic CRI patients with or without recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) therapy. METHODS: Six centers enrolled 158 patients with serum creatinine from 147 to 400 micromol/L, and 86 of whom with hemoglobin (Hb) levels < 110 g/L received rHuEPO (Group A). Forty patients with comparable Hb levels (< 110 g/L) but did not receive rHuEPO (Group B) and those with Hb >/= 110 g/L (Group C, n = 32) were served as controls. Echocardiographic studies were performed to evaluate LVMI at baseline and every 3 months during a two-year period. RESULTS: At baseline, the prevalence of LVH was 72.1% in Group A, 72.5% in Group B and 59.4% in Group C. LVMI was inversely correlated with Hb levels (r = -0.70, P < 0.01). There was no difference in age, gender, aetiology of renal failure, blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular risk factors between the 3 groups. The administration of rHuEPO in Group A significantly increased Hb levels from (93.8 +/- 14.6) g/L to (111.2 +/- 10.3) g/L and decreased LVMI from (142.6 +/- 25.7) g/m(2) to (132.4 +/- 18.5) g/m(2). The prevalence of LVH decreased 16.3% after a partial correction of anemia at 24 months, whereas Hb levels in controls (Group B and Group C) tended to decrease and LVMI significantly increased compared with baseline. The prevalence of LVH was significantly increased in Group B and C after 24 months. The percentage of patients whose serum creatinine level doubled during the follow-up was 3.4% in Group A, 15.0% in Group B and 9.4% in Group C, the difference between Group A and Group B being significant (P < 0.05). In addition, good BP control was obtained without any adverse effects. CONCLUSION: High prevalence of LVH was present in pre-dialysis CRI patients, which is associated with severity of anemia. Early treatment of anemia with rHuEPO can reverse LVH in CRI patients.

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical relations of portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG) of hepatitis B cirrhosis to other factors. METHODS: Three groups of subjects were studied prospectively at our hospital from March 2000 to March 2001: 159 hepatitis B cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension, 114 hepatitis B cirrhotic patients without portal hypertension, and 97 control subjects. Free portal vein pressure (FPP) was measured during surgery. Liver function was assessed by Pugh's modification of Child's criteria. The area of liver collagen fibrin was studied using color image analysis system. Esophageal varices were identified by Dagradi grading. Gastric varices were identified according to Northern Italian Endoscopic Council (NIEC) grading. Hypersplenism was assessed with the reduction of WBC, HGB and PLT. Hepatitis B virus in the gastric mucosa was detected by immunizing histochemistry. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) organisms were identified by rapid urease testing and/or examination of the stained biopsy specimens (haematoxylin and eosin). To analyze the correlation between these endoscopic signs at the gastric level and other factors. RESULTS: The differences of FPP among the three groups (patients with grade I, II, and III gastropathy) were not significant. There was no correlation between Child-Pugh classification grading and the severity of gastropathy (P=0.153). The differences of the area of liver collagen fibrin among the three grade gastropathy were not statistically significant (P=0.801). There was a significant difference in the prevalence of severe PHG among grade I, II, III, IV and V esophageal varices (P<0.001). PHG was present in a similar percentage of patients with gastric varices compared with those without gastric varices (P=0.209). There was a significant difference in the severity between PHG and hypersplenism (P=0.003). Seven patients with PHG had no microscopic evidence of hepatitis B virus infection in the gastric wall. There was no correlation between Child-Pugh classification grading and infection of H. pylori (P=0.7491). CONCLUSIONS: The most important element causing PHG is the increased portal pressure as a prerequisite. In addition, other factors may contribute to the development of PHG. PHG often occurs in patients with the presence of esophageal varices. There is a marked correlation between the severity of PHG and hypersplenism. Hepatitis B virus and H. pylori infection are unlikely to be involved in the pathogenesis of PHG. The development of PHG is less influenced either by the severity of liver disease (Child-Pugh grade) and cirrhosis or by the presence or non presence of gastric varices.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term therapeutic efficacy and safety of lamivudine (LAM) combining with alpha interferon (IFNalpha) on patients with chronic hepatitis B. METHODS: 90 chronic hepatitis B patients with HBV DNA and HBeAg positive were subdivided by 1:1:1 proportion into three groups: (1) LAM+IFN group: 6 months therapy of IFNalpha plus lamivudine followed by 6 months of lamivudine; (2) LAM group: lamivudine alone for 12 months; (3)IFN group: IFNalpha alone for 6 months. RESULTS: At the end of treatment, the HBV DNA undetectable rate in LAM+IFN group (90.0%) was much higher than that in LAM group (80.0%) and IFN group (46.7%) (chi2 = 13.017, P < 0.001). ALT normalization occurred 90.0%, 80.0%, and 53.3% in LAM+IFN group, LAM group, and IFN group, respectively (chi2 = 9.932, P = 0.002). HBeAg/anti-HBe seroconversion rates achieved 46.7%, 13.3%, and 33.3% in LAM+IFN group, LAM group, and IFN group, respectively (chi2 = 7.937, P = 0.005). YMDD mutation was not detected in serum samples from LAM+IFN group patients. CONCLUSIONS: LAM+IFN therapy for chronic hepatitis B is tolerated and more effective than IFN monotherapy in inhibiting viral replication and getting ALT normalization. The HBeAg/anti-HBe seroconversion rate with LAM+IFN therapy is higher than that with lamivudine monotherapy. LAM+IFN combination therapy seems to inhibit or postpone YMDD variants appearing in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Current international guidelines indicate that finite therapy with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) is possible in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. Here we evaluate the durability of efficacy after telbivudine (LdT) off-treatment. METHODS: 39 CHB patients with normalized ALT, undetectable HBV-DNA and HBeAg seroconversion for at least 48 weeks were observed after telbivudine discontinuation. We analyzed the follow-up clinical condition of off-treatment, calculated the cumulative clinical relapse rate, and explored the predictive factors for clinical relapse. RESULTS: Totally 8 patients encountered clinical relapse in the first 60 weeks after telbivudine discontinuation. The cumulative clinical relapse rates at week 24, 48, 60 and 204 were respectively 2.6%, 7.7%, 16.3% and 23.3%. No significant difference was found between cumulative clinical relapse rates of HBeAg(+) and HBeAg(-). No significant baseline or on-treatment factors for clinical relapse were found. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that most CHB patients maintained sustained response and HBeAg seroconversion following telbivudine off-treatment. Clinical relapses may often occur in the early period, with low clinical relapse rate. More follow-up data will be on-going and complemented in the further studies.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and prediabetes has increased in China, and at different rates in different locations. Therefore a community-based screening research was conducted in order to determine the prevalence of CKD and prediabetes, and to analyze associated risk factors of CKD and prediabetes in a city of Southern China. METHODS: A total of 7801 community residents aged 18 year and older from 6 communities were screened by a stratified random cluster sampling method. An estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), albuminuria, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were measured. Age-standardized prevalence was calculated by the direct method with the use of data on the population distribution in China in 2006. Multivariate logistic analysis was used to analyze the risk factors of CKD and prediabetes, and association of insulin resistance (IR) with CKD and prediabetes was analyzed. RESULTS: The age-standardized prevalence of CKD was 12.5%, eGFR < 60 ml×min(-1)×1.73 m(-2) was 2.7% and ACR (albumin to creatinine ratio) > 30 mg/g was 10.3%. The age-standardized prevalence of prediabetes was 12.1%. Logistic regression suggests that IR was a common independent risk factor of CKD and prediabetes. Further analysis show that HOMA-IR was increased with the aggravation of kidney injury and FPG. CONCLUSION: CKD and prediabetes have become a major public health problem in Zhuhai, Southern China; insulin resistance may be an important risk factor.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx) on adriamycin-induced apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma cells and the expressions of p53 and PTEN. METHODS: HepG2, HepG2/GFP, and HepG2/GFP-HBx cells were treated with adriamycin (2.5 microg/ml), and the apoptotic cell death was determined by observing the morphological changes and flow cytometry. The expressions of p53 and PTEN mRNA in the 3 cells were detected by RT-PCR, and the expressions of p53 and PTEN protein were analyzed by Western blotting. RESULTS: Adriamycin induced significant cell death in HepG2 and HepG2/GFP cells, which became rounded, shrunk, and detached after the treatment; but no significant cell death occurred in HepG2/GFP-HBx cells. Flow cytometry analysis showed that the apoptotic rate was significantly lower in HepG2/GFP-HBx cells (3.94%) than in HepG2 (59.03%) and HepG2/GFP cells (61.38%) at 36 h after the treatment (P<0.001), while no significant difference was observed between HepG2/GFP-HBx (3.94%) and the control cells (2.12%, 2.78%, and 2.55%) (P>0.05). RT-PCR showed lowered expression of PTEN mRNA in HepG2/GFP-HBx cells as compared to that in HepG2 and HepG2/GFP cells, while no significant difference was noted in p53 mRNA. Western blot analysis showed that PTEN protein decreased while p53 protein remain unchanged in HepG2/GFP-HBx cells. CONCLUSION: HBx suppresses adriamycin-induced apoptosis of HepG2 cells and PTEN expression. The inhibitory effect of HBx on the cell apoptosis may be related to the inhibition of p53-PTEN pathway.

RESUMEN

Nondispersive ambipolar carrier transport with comparably high electron and hole mobilities for amorphous molecular solids that are composed of only a single type of chromophores was observed for the first time in amorphous ter(9,9-diarylfluorene)s. High hole and electron mobilities over 10-3 cm2/(V.s) can be achieved with these terfluorenes. In particular, the electron mobility observed represents the highest ever reported for amorphous molecular solids.
