RESUMEN

Among atomically thin semiconductors, CrSBr stands out as both its bulk and monolayer forms host tightly bound, quasi-one-dimensional excitons in a magnetic environment. Despite its pivotal importance for solid-state research, the exciton lifetime has remained unknown. While terahertz polarization probing can directly trace all excitons, independently of interband selection rules, the corresponding large far-field foci substantially exceed the lateral sample dimensions. Here, we combine terahertz polarization spectroscopy with near-field microscopy to reveal a femtosecond decay of paramagnetic excitons in a monolayer of CrSBr, which is 30 times shorter than the bulk lifetime. We unveil low-energy fingerprints of bound and unbound electron-hole pairs in bulk CrSBr and extract the nonequilibrium dielectric function of the monolayer in a model-free manner. Our results demonstrate the first direct access to the ultrafast dielectric response of quasi-one-dimensional excitons in CrSBr, potentially advancing the development of quantum devices based on ultrathin van der Waals magnets.

RESUMEN

Interlayer exciton diffusion is studied in atomically reconstructed MoSe_{2}/WSe_{2} heterobilayers with suppressed disorder. Local atomic registry is confirmed by characteristic optical absorption, circularly polarized photoluminescence, and g-factor measurements. Using transient microscopy we observe propagation properties of interlayer excitons that are independent from trapping at moiré- or disorder-induced local potentials. Confirmed by characteristic temperature dependence for free particles, linear diffusion coefficients of interlayer excitons at liquid helium temperature and low excitation densities are almost 1000 times higher than in previous observations. We further show that exciton-exciton repulsion and annihilation contribute nearly equally to nonlinear propagation by disentangling the two processes in the experiment and simulations. Finally, we demonstrate effective shrinking of the light emission area over time across several hundreds of picoseconds at the transition from exciton- to the plasma-dominated regimes. Supported by microscopic calculations for band gap renormalization to identify the Mott threshold, this indicates transient crossing between rapidly expanding, short-lived electron-hole plasma and slower, long-lived exciton populations.

RESUMEN

Propagation of light-emitting quasiparticles is of central importance across the fields of condensed matter physics and nanomaterials science. We experimentally demonstrate diffusion of excitons in the presence of a continuously tunable Fermi sea of free charge carriers in a monolayer semiconductor. Light emission from tightly bound exciton states in electrically gated WSe2 monolayer is detected using spatially and temporally resolved microscopy. The measurements reveal a nonmonotonic dependence of the exciton diffusion coefficient on the charge carrier density in both electron and hole doped regimes. Supported by analytical theory describing exciton-carrier interactions in a dissipative system, we identify distinct regimes of elastic scattering and quasiparticle formation determining exciton diffusion. The crossover region exhibits a highly unusual behavior of an increasing diffusion coefficient with increasing carrier densities. Temperature-dependent diffusion measurements further reveal characteristic signatures of freely propagating excitonic complexes dressed by free charges with effective mobilities up to 3 × 103 cm2/(V s).

RESUMEN

We experimentally demonstrate time-resolved exciton propagation in a monolayer semiconductor at cryogenic temperatures. Monitoring phonon-assisted recombination of dark states, we find a highly unusual case of exciton diffusion. While at 5 K the diffusivity is intrinsically limited by acoustic phonon scattering, we observe a pronounced decrease of the diffusion coefficient with increasing temperature, far below the activation threshold of higher-energy phonon modes. This behavior corresponds neither to well-known regimes of semiclassical free-particle transport nor to the thermally activated hopping in systems with strong localization. Its origin is discussed in the framework of both microscopic numerical and semiphenomenological analytical models illustrating the observed characteristics of nonclassical propagation. Challenging the established description of mobile excitons in monolayer semiconductors, these results open up avenues to study quantum transport phenomena for excitonic quasiparticles in atomically thin van der Waals materials and their heterostructures.

RESUMEN

Two-dimensional hybrid perovskites are currently in the spotlight of condensed matter and nanotechnology research due to their intriguing optoelectronic and vibrational properties with emerging potential for light-harvesting and light-emitting applications. While it is known that these natural quantum wells host tightly bound excitons, the mobilities of these fundamental optical excitations at the heart of the optoelectronic applications are barely explored. Here, we directly monitor the diffusion of excitons through ultrafast emission microscopy from liquid helium to room temperature in hBN-encapsulated two-dimensional hybrid perovskites. We find very fast diffusion with characteristic hallmarks of free exciton propagation for all temperatures above 50 K. In the cryogenic regime, we observe nonlinear, anomalous behavior with an exceptionally rapid expansion of the exciton cloud followed by a very slow and even negative effective diffusion. We discuss our findings in view of efficient exciton-phonon coupling, highlighting two-dimensional hybrids as promising platforms for basic research and optoelectronic applications.

RESUMEN

We experimentally demonstrate dressing of the excited exciton states by a continuously tunable Fermi sea of free charge carriers in a monolayer semiconductor. It represents an unusual scenario of two-particle excitations of charged excitons previously inaccessible in conventional material systems. We identify excited state trions, accurately determine their binding energies in the zero-density limit for both electron- and hole-doped regimes, and observe emerging many-body phenomena at elevated doping. Combining experiment and theory we gain access to the intra-exciton coupling facilitated by the interaction with free charge carriers. We provide evidence for a process of autoionization for quasiparticles, a unique scattering pathway available for excited states in atomic systems. Finally, we demonstrate a complete transfer of the optical transition strength from the excited excitons to dressed Fermi-polaron states as well as the associated light emission from their nonequilibrium populations.

RESUMEN

Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides present an intriguing platform to investigate the interplay of excitonic complexes in two-dimensional semiconductors. Here, we use optical spectroscopy to study the light-matter coupling and non-equilibrium relaxation dynamics of three-particle exciton states, commonly known as trions. We identify the consequences of the exchange interaction for the trion fine structure in tungsten-based monolayer materials from variational calculations and experimentally determine the resulting characteristic differences in their oscillator strength. It allows us to quantitatively extract trion populations from time-resolved photoluminescence measurements and monitor their dynamics after off-resonant optical injection. At liquid helium temperature, we observe a pronounced non-equilibrium distribution of the trions during their lifetime with comparatively slow equilibration that occurs on time-scales up to several hundreds of ps. In addition, we find an intriguing regime of population inversion at lowest excitation densities, which builds up and is maintained for tens of picoseconds. At a higher lattice temperature, the equilibrium is established more rapidly and the inversion disappears, highlighting the role of thermal activation for efficient scattering between exchange-split trions.

RESUMEN

The interplay of optics, dynamics, and transport is crucial for the design of novel optoelectronic devices, such as photodetectors and solar cells. In this context, transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received much attention. Here, strongly bound excitons dominate optical excitation, carrier dynamics, and diffusion processes. While the first two have been intensively studied, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of nonequilibrium phenomena associated with exciton transport that is of central importance (e.g., for high-efficiency light harvesting). In this work, we provide microscopic insights into the interplay of exciton propagation and many-particle interactions in TMDs. On the basis of a fully quantum mechanical approach and in excellent agreement with photoluminescence measurements, we show that Auger recombination and emission of hot phonons act as a heating mechanism giving rise to strong spatial gradients in excitonic temperature. The resulting thermal drift leads to an unconventional exciton diffusion characterized by spatial exciton halos.

RESUMEN

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit the emergence of a direct bandgap at the monolayer limit along with pronounced excitonic effects. In these materials, interaction with phonons is the dominant mechanism that limits the exciton coherence lifetime. Exciton-phonon interaction also facilitates energy and momentum relaxation, and influences exciton diffusion under most experimental conditions. However, the fundamental changes in the exciton-phonon interaction are not well understood as the material undergoes the transition from a direct to an indirect bandgap semiconductor. Here, we address this question through optical spectroscopy and microscopic theory. In the experiment, we study room-temperature statistics of the exciton line width for a large number of mono- and bilayer WS2 samples. We observe a systematic increase in the room-temperature line width of the bilayer compared to the monolayer of 50 meV, corresponding to an additional scattering rate of ∼0.1 fs-1. We further address both phonon emission and absorption processes by examining the temperature dependence of the width of the exciton resonances. Using a theoretical approach based on many-body formalism, we are able to explain the experimental results and establish a microscopic framework for exciton-phonon interactions that can be applied to naturally occurring and artificially prepared multilayer structures.

RESUMEN

Heterostructures of van der Waals bonded layered materials offer unique means to tailor dielectric screening with atomic-layer precision, opening a fertile field of fundamental research. The optical analyses used so far have relied on interband spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate how a capping layer of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) renormalizes the internal structure of excitons in a WSe2 monolayer using intraband transitions. Ultrabroadband terahertz probes sensitively map out the full complex-valued mid-infrared conductivity of the heterostructure after optical injection of 1s A excitons. This approach allows us to trace the energies and line widths of the atom-like 1s-2p transition of optically bright and dark excitons as well as the densities of these quasiparticles. The excitonic resonance red shifts and narrows in the WSe2/hBN heterostructure compared to the bare monolayer. Furthermore, the ultrafast temporal evolution of the mid-infrared response function evidences the formation of optically dark excitons from an initial bright population. Our results provide key insight into the effect of nonlocal screening on electron-hole correlations and open new possibilities of dielectric engineering of van der Waals heterostructures.

RESUMEN

We directly monitor exciton propagation in freestanding and SiO_{2}-supported WS_{2} monolayers through spatially and time-resolved microphotoluminescence under ambient conditions. We find a highly nonlinear behavior with characteristic, qualitative changes in the spatial profiles of the exciton emission and an effective diffusion coefficient increasing from 0.3 to more than 30 cm^{2}/s, depending on the injected exciton density. Solving the diffusion equation while accounting for Auger recombination allows us to identify and quantitatively understand the main origin of the increase in the observed diffusion coefficient. At elevated excitation densities, the initial Gaussian distribution of the excitons evolves into long-lived halo shapes with µm-scale diameter, indicating additional memory effects in the exciton dynamics.

RESUMEN

Atomically thin semiconductors provide an ideal testbed to investigate the physics of Coulomb-bound many-body states. We shed light on the intricate structure of such complexes by studying the magnetic-field-induced splitting of biexcitons in monolayer WS_{2} using polarization-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy in out-of-plane magnetic fields up to 30 T. The observed g factor of the biexciton amounts to about -3.9, closely matching the g factor of the neutral exciton. The biexciton emission shows an inverted circular field-induced polarization upon linearly polarized excitation; i.e., it exhibits preferential emission from the high-energy peak in a magnetic field. This phenomenon is explained by taking into account the hybrid configuration of the biexciton constituents in momentum space and their respective energetic behavior in magnetic fields. Our findings reveal the critical role of dark excitons in the composition of this many-body state.

RESUMEN

Transient changes of the optical response of WS2 monolayers are studied by femtosecond broadband pump-probe spectroscopy. Time-dependent absorption spectra are analyzed by tracking the line width broadening, bleaching, and energy shift of the main exciton resonance as a function of time delay after the excitation. Two main sources for the pump-induced changes of the optical response are identified. Specifically, we find an interplay between modifications induced by many-body interactions from photoexcited carriers and by the subsequent transfer of the excitation to the phonon system followed by cooling of the material through the heat transfer to the substrate.

RESUMEN

Many of the fundamental optical and electronic properties of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides are dominated by strong Coulomb interactions between electrons and holes, forming tightly bound atom-like states called excitons. Here, we directly trace the ultrafast formation of excitons by monitoring the absolute densities of bound and unbound electron-hole pairs in single monolayers of WSe2 on a diamond substrate following femtosecond nonresonant optical excitation. To this end, phase-locked mid-infrared probe pulses and field-sensitive electro-optic sampling are used to map out the full complex-valued optical conductivity of the nonequilibrium system and to discern the hallmark low-energy responses of bound and unbound pairs. While the spectral shape of the infrared response immediately after above-bandgap injection is dominated by free charge carriers, up to 60% of the electron-hole pairs are bound into excitons already on a subpicosecond time scale, evidencing extremely fast and efficient exciton formation. During the subsequent recombination phase, we still find a large density of free carriers in addition to excitons, indicating a nonequilibrium state of the photoexcited electron-hole system.

RESUMEN

We have applied optical absorption spectroscopy to investigate van der Waals heterostructures formed of pairs of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide crystals, choosing MoS2/WS2 and MoSe2/WSe2 as test cases. In the heterostructure spectra, we observe a significant broadening of the excitonic transitions compared to the corresponding features in the isolated layers. The broadening is interpreted as a lifetime effect arising from decay of excitons initially created in either layer through charge transfer processes expected for a staggered band alignment. The measured spectral broadening of 20 meV - 35 meV implies lifetimes for charge separation of the near band-edge A and B excitons in the range of 20-35 fs. Higher-lying transitions exhibit still greater broadening.

RESUMEN

We have identified excited exciton states in monolayers of MoS2 and WS2 supported on fused silica by means of photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. In monolayer WS2, the positions of the excited A exciton states imply an exciton binding energy of 0.32 eV. In monolayer MoS2, excited exciton transitions are observed at energies of 2.24 and 2.34 eV. Assigning these states to the B exciton Rydberg series yields an exciton binding energy of 0.44 eV.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate continuous tuning of the exciton binding energy in monolayer WS_{2} by means of an externally applied voltage in a field-effect transistor device. Using optical spectroscopy, we monitor the ground and excited excitonic states as a function of gate voltage and track the evolution of the quasiparticle band gap. The observed decrease of the exciton binding energy over the range of about 100 meV, accompanied by the renormalization of the quasiparticle band gap, is associated with screening of the Coulomb interaction by the electrically injected free charge carriers at densities up to 8×10^{12} cm^{-2}. Complete ionization of the excitons due to the electrical doping is estimated to occur at a carrier density of several 10^{13} cm^{-2}.

RESUMEN

Molybdenum disulfide bilayers with well-defined interlayer twist angle were constructed by stacking single-crystal monolayers. Varying interlayer twist angle results in strong tuning of the indirect optical transition energy and second-harmonic generation and weak tuning of direct optical transition energies and Raman mode frequencies. Electronic structure calculations show the interlayer separation changes with twist due to repulsion between sulfur atoms, resulting in shifts of the indirect optical transition energies. These results show that interlayer alignment is a crucial variable in tailoring the properties of two-dimensional heterostructures.

RESUMEN

Singlet fission, the conversion of a singlet excitation into two triplet excitations, is a viable route to improved solar-cell efficiency. Despite active efforts to understand the singlet fission mechanism, which would aid in the rational design of new materials, a comprehensive understanding of mechanistic principles is still lacking. Here, we present the first study of singlet fission in crystalline hexacene which, together with tetracene and pentacene, enables the elucidation of mechanistic trends. We characterize the static and transient optical absorption and combine our findings with a theoretical analysis of the relevant electronic couplings and rates. We find a singlet fission time scale of 530 fs, which is orders of magnitude faster than tetracene (10-100 ps) but significantly slower than pentacene (80-110 fs). We interpret this increased time scale as a multiphonon relaxation effect originating from a large exothermicity and present a microscopic theory that quantitatively reproduces the rates in the acene family.

RESUMEN

We have experimentally determined the energies of the ground and first four excited excitonic states of the fundamental optical transition in monolayer WS_{2}, a model system for the growing class of atomically thin two-dimensional semiconductor crystals. From the spectra, we establish a large exciton binding energy of 0.32 eV and a pronounced deviation from the usual hydrogenic Rydberg series of energy levels of the excitonic states. We explain both of these results using a microscopic theory in which the nonlocal nature of the effective dielectric screening modifies the functional form of the Coulomb interaction. These strong but unconventional electron-hole interactions are expected to be ubiquitous in atomically thin materials.
