RESUMEN

AIM: Our aim was to investigate perinatal and clinical factors associated with children with cerebral palsy (CP) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The distribution of MRI patterns was based on the MRI classification system (MRICS). Associations between perinatal/clinical characteristics and MRI patterns were also investigated. METHODS: A population-based cohort study was performed; those 257 children (58.0% male) were enrolled from our CP database who born between 1990 and 2015 in Southwest Hungary and had at least one MRI scan. RESULTS: Brain maldevelopments were found in 18.7% of our patients, 83.7% of those born at term. Grey matter lesions were found in 19.8% of our patients, and 80.0% of those children were born at term. The rate of white matter injuries was the highest (35.4%); 69.0% of these patients were born before 37th week of gestation. MRI revealed no abnormalities in 13.6% of children with CP. The best values of gross/fine motor and cognitive function tests were found in children with normal MRI and with grey matter injuries. The prevalence of epilepsy was above 60% in every group with an abnormal MRI. CONCLUSION: MRI results were conclusive in 86.4% of children with CP. It is highly encouraged to perform cranial MRI in every patient with CP.

RESUMEN

Hemiplegic migraine is a rare subtype of migraine that is associated with reversible motor weakness in the aura phase. This is an uncommon form of migraine usually starting in childhood. The purpose of this case report is to highlight the differential diagnostic difficulty of the first attack. We describe a case, where the fluctuating unilateral motor weakness and aphasia suggested that the patient had ischaemic stroke. Nevertheless the brain MRI and MR angiography, the measured 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) concentration changes and the spontaneously improving clinical status proved the diagnosis of hemiplegic migraine. The MRI and MR angiography was very beneficial in establishing the correct diagnosis in this case. To distinguish between the familiar and sporadic type of hemiplegic migraine further genetic tests can be carried out.

RESUMEN

A fast microchip electrophoresis method was developed to analyze and differentiate bacterial endotoxins directly from whole-cell lysates after removal of the proteinaceous components with proteinase K digestion and a precipitation of the endotoxin components. The partially purified endotoxin components were visualized by the interaction with dodecyl sulphate and then a fluorescent dye. The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) profiles can be directly evaluated from digested bacterial cells, and the electrophoresis patterns very closely resembled to those of pure LPSs, and the R and S chemotypes can be used to assign the strains. The method has been found to be useful in the screening of a large number of bacterial mutants and the structural characterization of endotoxins extracted only from 1 ml cultures.
