RESUMEN

Studying spin-momentum correlations in hadronic collisions offers a glimpse into a three-dimensional picture of proton structure. The transverse single-spin asymmetry for midrapidity isolated direct photons in p^{↑}+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Because direct photons in particular are produced from the hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force, this measurement is a clean probe of initial-state spin-momentum correlations inside the proton and is in particular sensitive to gluon interference effects within the proton. This is the first time direct photons have been used as a probe of spin-momentum correlations at RHIC. The uncertainties on the results are a 50-fold improvement with respect to those of the one prior measurement for the same observable, from the Fermilab E704 experiment. These results constrain gluon spin-momentum correlations in transversely polarized protons.

Recently, multiparticle-correlation measurements of relativistic p/d/^{3}He+Au, p+Pb, and even p+p collisions show surprising collective signatures. Here, we present beam-energy-scan measurements of two-, four-, and six-particle angular correlations in d+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200, 62.4, 39, and 19.6 GeV. We also present measurements of two- and four-particle angular correlations in p+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. We find the four-particle cumulant to be real valued for d+Au collisions at all four energies. We also find that the four-particle cumulant in p+Au has the opposite sign as that in d+Au. Further, we find that the six-particle cumulant agrees with the four-particle cumulant in d+Au collisions at 200 GeV, indicating that nonflow effects are subdominant. These observations provide strong evidence that the correlations originate from the initial geometric configuration, which is then translated into the momentum distribution for all particles, commonly referred to as collectivity.

During 2015, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provided collisions of transversely polarized protons with Au and Al nuclei for the first time, enabling the exploration of transverse-single-spin asymmetries with heavy nuclei. Large single-spin asymmetries in very forward neutron production have been previously observed in transversely polarized p+p collisions at RHIC, and the existing theoretical framework that was successful in describing the single-spin asymmetry in p+p collisions predicts only a moderate atomic-mass-number (A) dependence. In contrast, the asymmetries observed at RHIC in p+A collisions showed a surprisingly strong A dependence in inclusive forward neutron production. The observed asymmetry in p+Al collisions is much smaller, while the asymmetry in p+Au collisions is a factor of 3 larger in absolute value and of opposite sign. The interplay of different neutron production mechanisms is discussed as a possible explanation of the observed A dependence.

The incorporation of resistance exercises into the lifestyle of patients with lymphedema is understudied and an emerging interest. We investigated the effectiveness and results of adding a moderate intensity resistance exercise program for 8 weeks in conjunction with intensive CDT for 1 or 2 weeks (depending on severity) on arm volume, arm function, QOL, and muscular strength in patients with breast cancer-related lymphedema. This prospective, pilot trial included forty-four patients with a history of breast cancer who were beginning complex decongestive therapy for lymphedema. They were assigned to either the intervention (n = 22) or control (n = 22). groups. The intervention comprised of resis- tance band exercises 5 times a week for 8 weeks. These were initially supervised during the intensive lymphedema treatment, but performed independently during the study period. Limb volume, muscular strength, and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QOL Questionnaire C30 (EORTC QLQ-C30), EORTC-Breast Cancer-Specific QOL Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-BR23), and Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaires were assessed at baseline and at 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, the intervention group demonstrated statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in the DASH score and muscular strength compared to the control group. Our results indicate that upper body resistance exercise demonstrates a positive effect on arm function and muscular strength without increasing arm volume in breast cancer related lymphedema during and shortly post intensive CDT lymphedema treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasonography can be used to detect soft tissue abnormalities within the joints that cannot be assessed using conventional X-rays. This study investigated the relationship between soft tissue and/or bony abnormalities on ultrasonography and the biochemical markers of the synovium and cartilage in the knee of osteoarthritis (OA) patients. METHODS: The knees from 51 OA patients who fulfilled the ACR criteria were enrolled in this study. Knee ultrasonography was performed in the affected knee joints using a 12 MHz linear probe to assess the presence of effusion, synovial proliferation, capsular distention, the length of osteophytes and the cartilage thickness. At the same time, the serum hyaluronic acid (HA) and the cartilage oligomeric protein (COMP) levels were measured by ELISA, and RIA was used to determine the serum osteocalcin levels. RESULTS: The patients with a longer medial osteophyte showed higher serum HA and COMP levels than those with a shorter one. The serum HA levels were significantly higher in those patients with a larger amount of effusion and/or synovial proliferation, which indicated inflammatory changes, than in those without. In addition, the severity of the capsular distention also correlated well with the serum HA and COMP levels. However, the length of the lateral osteophytes and the thickness of the femoral cartilage showed no correlation with the serum HA or COMP levels. In addition, the serum osteocalcin levels did not show any association with the above ultrasonographic parameters. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the serum HA and COMP levels were elevated in the more severe OA patients by knee ultrasonography than in the less severe patients. This suggests that the detailed pathological changes in the soft tissue and/or bone of the OA joints on ultrasonography are directly reflected by the biochemical markers measured in the peripheral blood.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the peritoneal clearance of middle molecules in comparison with the peritoneal clearance of small molecules in incremental peritoneal dialysis (PD). STUDY DESIGN: Peritoneal clearances of creatinine and beta2-microgloblulin (B2M) were compared in 57 continuous ambulatory PD patients on full dose of 4 exchanges, and 54 incremental PD patients with 2 or 3 exchanges over 24 hours. Clearances were also compared when there were changes in the PD regimen, such as in the number of exchanges and the duration of the dwell time. SETTING: Tertiary-care university hospital. RESULTS: Peritoneal creatinine clearance increased almost linearly with the increase in the number of exchanges. In contrast, peritoneal clearance of B2M was 9.1 +/- 3.6 L/week, 8.8 +/- 4.4 L/week, and 7.9 +/- 2.5 L/week with 2,3, and 4 exchanges, respectively, per day, amounts that were not different from each other. Peritoneal clearance of B2M did not change when there was an increase in the number of dialysate exchanges from 2 to 3 and from 3 to 4 over a period of 24 hours; whereas the peritoneal clearance of creatinine increased. Peritoneal clearance of B2M almost doubled, from 5.4 +/- 2.7 L/week with 2 exchanges over 12 hours per day, to 9.5 +/- 4.4 L/week with the same 2 exchanges over 24 hours. The creatinine clearance did not change. CONCLUSION: In contrast to peritoneal clearance of small molecules, such as creatinine, which was dependent on the number of dialysate exchanges, peritoneal clearance of middle molecules, such as B2M, depended mainly on the total dwell hours of PD and not on the number of exchanges of peritoneal dialysate in incremental PD. This might be another advantage of incremental PD, since peritoneal clearance of middle molecules in incremental PD over 24 hours can be comparable to that in full dose PD.

Antinuclear antibodies are used in the diagnosis and evaluation of patients with connective tissue diseases. The study of antinuclear antibodies has also fundamentally expanded our understanding of nuclear anatomy and function. This article reviews the clinically relevant antinuclear antibodies and their disease associations. Developing an understanding of the utilities and limitations of antinuclear antibodies is essential to providing the expert diagnoses prognoses, and care expected of a dermatologist.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the antithrombotic effects of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) and its new prescription (KRGP) consisting of five herbs such as Korean red ginseng, Ganoderma, Cinnamomi Cortex, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Laminaria. In rats with blood stasis induced by high molecular weight dextran, KRG and KRGP significantly restored not only the number of platelets and fibrinogen, but also suppressed the fibrin degradation products (FDP) to normal range. In platelet aggregation assay with human platelet rich plasma (PRP), KRG and KRGP significantly inhibited thrombin and collagen-induced platelet aggregation. The IC(50) values of KRG and KRGP were >2 and 0.23+/-0.01 mg/ml for thrombin, 0.32+/-0.01 and 0.17+/-0.02 mg/ml for collagen and 0.72+/-0.25 and >2 mg/ml for ADP, respectively. In coagulation assay, KRG and KRGP significantly prolonged activated partial prothrombin time (APPT) and prothrombin time (PT) as compared with control data. KRGP was found to be more effective than KRG alone on antithrombotic activity. These results suggest that KRGP may exert its antithrombotic activity due to inhibition of platelet aggregation and coagulation activity more than KRG.

Mycophenolic acid (MPA) is one of many effective immunosuppressive drugs. However, MPA can induce cellular toxicity and impair cellular function in ß-cells. To explore the effects of MPA and the relation between MPA and Trx-1, we used various methods, including an Illumina microarray, to identify the genes regulated during pancreatic ß-cell death following MPA treatment. INS-1E cells (a pancreatic ß-cell line) and isolated rat islets were treated with MPA for 12, 24, or 36 h, and subsequent microarray analysis showed that (Trx1) gene expression was significantly reduced by MPA. Further, Trx1 overexpression increased the cell viability, decreased the activations of c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and caspase-3 by MPA, and attenuated ROS upregulation by MPA. Furthermore, siRNA knockdown of Trx1 increased MPA-induced cell death and the activations of p-JNK and caspase-3, and MPA significantly provoked the apoptosis of insulin-secreting cells via Trx1 downregulation. Our findings suggest that the prevention of Trx1 downregulation in response to MPA is critical for successful islet transplantation.

Mycophenolic acid (MPA) is an immunosuppressive agent that is widely used in clinical therapy, including pancreas and islet transplantation. Previously, we showed that MPA induces significant apoptosis of insulin-secreting cells by downregulating RhoGDI-α and increasing JNK expression. In this study, we investigated Rac1 directly associated with RhoGDI-α during MPA-induced apoptosis in INS-1E cells (an insulin-secreting cell line). Cells were treated with MPA for 24 and 36 hours. Immunoprecipitation was used to examine physical interactions between RhoGDI-α and Rac1. Activation and immunoprecipitation assays showed expressions of Rac1 and RhoGDI-α to be directly correlated. Rac1 binding to RhoGDI-α decreased after MPA treatment, and Rac1 was induced and subsequently activated by MPA. We concluded that this novel RhoGDI-α/Rac1/JNK pathway induced apoptosis of transplanted islet cells after MPA treatment.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) expression on treatment outcomes in advanced biliary tract adenocarcinoma (ABTA) patients treated with platinum-based chemotherapy. METHODS: One hundred and six patients with histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma of biliary tract were enrolled at 5 institutions in South Korea between January 2002 and September 2008. Of 106 patients, 93 were assessed by immunohistochemistry from tissue specimens. Sixty-five patients were treated with cisplatin-based regimens and the other 28 treated with oxaliplatin-based ones. RESULTS: For total study population, no significant differences were noted in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) between ERCC1-negative and ERCC1-positive patients, respectively (4.2 vs. 2.9 months, p = 0.116; 7.0 vs. 7.8 months, p = 0.143). In patients treated with cisplatin-based regimens, median PFS and OS were significantly longer in ERCC1-negative group than in ERCC1-positive group, respectively (4.6 vs. 1.9 months, p = 0.014; 9.1 vs. 7.9 months, p = 0.017). Disease control rate (DCR) was better in patients with ERCC1 negative than in patients with ERCC1 positive (p = 0.048). On the other hand, in patients treated with oxaliplatin-containing regimens, median PFS and OS tended to be longer in ERCC1-positive group, but these did not reach statistical significances. Response rate was better in patients with ERCC1 positive (p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: ERCC1 shows a significant prognostic value in ABTA patients treated with cisplatin. A survival benefit was observed in ERCC1-negative patients from cisplatin-containing chemotherapy but not from oxaliplatin-containing ones. The action mechanism of ERCC1 on cisplatin may be different from that on oxaliplatin.

OBJECTIVE: Macrophage inhibitory protein-1alpha (MIP-1alpha), a C-C chemokine, stimulates the activation and migration of leukocytes. We investigated the expression of MIP-1alpha in patients with Behçet's disease (BD) and evaluated the association of the MIP-1alpha levels with disease activity of BD. METHODS: Serum samples were obtained from 67 BD patients and 30 healthy controls. Simultaneously, whole blood cells were isolated from BD patients (n = 25) and healthy controls (n = 11) and cultured in the absence or presence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) plus ionomycin. The concentrations of MIP-1alpha, interleukin-8 (IL-8), regulated on activation, normally T cell expressed and secreted (RANTES), and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) were measured in the sera and culture supernatants by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: The serum levels of MIP-1alpha were higher in BD patients than in healthy controls. When whole blood cells were stimulated with LPS or PMA plus ionomycin, but not PHA, BD patients had higher levels of MIP-1alpha in the culture supernatants compared to healthy controls. In sera and culture supernatants of whole blood cells, MIP-1alpha levels correlated well with those of RANTES, MCP-1, and IL-8 in BD patients. Moreover, patients with active disease had significantly higher levels of serum MIP-1alpha levels compared with those with inactive disease. CONCLUSION: MIP-1alpha levels were elevated in patients with BD, and correlated well with IL-8, RANTES, and MCP-1 levels. These results suggest that the increased MIP-1alpha levels in serum of BD patients may lead to activation and migration of leukocytes, playing a role, like other chemokines, in the pathogenesis of BD.

An efficient strategy for the separation and recovery of gamma-polyglutamic acid (gamma-PGA) from highly viscous broth was developed. This strategy was divided into two processes: The first was to separate gamma-PGA from highly viscous culture broth; the second was to concentrate gamma-PGA solution by ultrafiltration for the reduction of the amount of alcohol required during recovery process with precipitation. By lowering the pH value of culture broth to 3, the viscosity of culture broth and the zeta potential of cell could be reduced to a sixth of the original value at 35 degrees C and a third, respectively. After the acidification of culture broth the energy demand for the separation of gamma-PGA from culture broth by centrifugation could be reduced to 17% of that without it when the centrifugal force was 22,000g. The amount of alcohol required for precipitation could be reduced to a fourth of that generally used without concentration by concentrating 20 g gamma-PGA/L solution to 60 g gamma-PGA/L at pH 5 by ultrafiltration with hollow-fiber membrane cartridge (MWCO 500,000).
