Seasonal allergic dermatitis in sheep in southern Brazil caused by Culicoides insignis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).

The incidence of seasonal dermatitis was studied in a Hampshire Down flock on a farm in southern Brazil. Epidemiological data, clinical signs and macroscopic pathology were obtained by visiting the farm. Histological lesions were studied in skin biopsies of affected sheep. Biting insects were collected from January to April 2005 in an attempt to identify the etiological agent of the disease. Disease prevalence was 40%; the age of the affected animals was variable. Disease occurred from December to March, some animals had lesions for the entire year. Clinical signs include pruritus on the ears, around the eyes and ventral abdomen. Initially erythema and small red papules were seen, followed by alopecia and crust formation. Histologically the lesions were characterized by perivascular eosinophilic dermatitis. Hyperkeratosis and acanthosis were observed in the chronic lesions. Both Anopheles albitarsis and Culicoides insignis were captured during the study. C. insignis bites caused pruritus in sheep. Both types of insects were caught when they approached the sheep baits approximately 30min after sunset. Results suggested that the disease occurred as a result of an immediate hypersensitivity reaction to C. insignis.

A description and illustrations of Monohelea maya, new species, based on male and female characteristics are provided. The specimens were collected in the special biosphere Reserves of Ria Lagartos and Ria Celestun, Yucatan State, Mexico.

A new Culicoides from the Amazonian region, Brazil (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).

A new Neotropical species of biting midge Culicoides (Haematomyidium), C. kampa Felippe-Bauer, Veras & Castellon, is described and illustrated based on female specimens from the Amazonian Region.

Scanning electron microscopy of the antennal sensilla in female Culicoides paraensis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

We studied by sanning electron microscopy the number, types, structure and distribution of the antennal sensilla of the medical important ceratopogonid Culicoides paraensis (Goeldi). There are about 174 sense organs on the antenmal flagellum which are classified as sensilla chaetica; sharp-tipped and blunt-tipped (type I and II) sensilla trichodea; sensilla basiconica; sensilla coeloconica; sensilla ampullacea and styloconic-type sensilla. The role of antennal sensory organs are discussed regarding the host preference of the biting midges

No período de março de 1984 a fevereiro de 1985, capturamos simulídeos e maruins no Parque Nacional da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. Correlacionamos a freqüência mensal e a atividade de hemotofagia com a temperatura ambiente, umidade relativa do ar e a precipitaçäo pluviométrica
