The ability of active matter to assemble into reconfigurable nonequilibrium structures has drawn considerable interest in recent years. We investigate how active fluids respond to spatial light patterns through simulations and experiments on light-activated self-propelled colloidal particles. We examine the processes of inverse templated assembly, which involves creating a region without active particles through a bright pattern, and templated assembly, which promotes the formation of dense particle regions through a dark pattern. We identify scaling relations for the characteristic times for both processes that quantify the interplay between the dimension of the applied pattern and the intrinsic properties of the active fluid. We also explore the assembly mechanism and dynamics of large clusters and show how assembly and inverse assembly can be combined to create any arbitrarily complex template. In addition to providing protocols for templated assembly via light patterning, our results demonstrate how the local packing fraction can be fine-tuned by modulation of the light intensity. The protocol so obtained exceeds the capabilities of conventional assembly strategies, in which packing fraction is dictated by thermodynamics, and opens the door to arbitrarily precise and programmable nonequilibrium assembly strategies in active matter.
RESUMEN
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Diet and nutrition have emerged as key factors in the development and course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including the approach to therapy. We present an overview of evidence-based recommendations and recent research in dietary therapy and nutrition management for patients with IBD. RECENT FINDINGS: Patients with IBD should undergo a comprehensive nutrition assessment with the assistance of a registered dietitian (RD), including screening for micronutrient deficiencies. Multiple specialized whole foods and liquid formula diets have been evaluated as part of induction and maintenance therapy for IBD. Nutritional status should ideally be optimized in the perioperative setting as well. Nutritional issues are prevalent among IBD patients and should be addressed by a multidisciplinary team, tailored to each patient's disease type, severity and course, including response to medical therapy and need for surgical management, as well as relevant psychosocial considerations.

It is known that polymer films, prepared by spin coating, inherit non-equilibrium configurations which can affect macroscopic film properties. Here we present the results of crazing experiments that support this claim; our measurements indicate that the as-cast chain configurations are strongly stretched as compared to equilibrium Gaussian configurations. The results of our experiments also demonstrate that the entanglement network equilibrates on a time scale comparable to one reptation time. Having established that films can be prepared with an equilibrium entanglement network, we proceed by confining polymers to films in which the thickness is comparable to the molecular size. By stacking two such films, a bilayer is created with a buried entropic interface. Such an interface has no enthalpic cost, only an entropic penalty associated with the restricted configurations of molecules that cannot cross the mid-plane of the bilayer. In the melt, the entropic interface heals as chains from the two layers mix and entangle with one another; crazing measurements allow us to probe the dynamics of two films becoming one. Healing of the entropic interface is found to take less than one bulk reptation time.

Little is known regarding the coordination of audition with decision-making and subsequent motor responses that initiate social behavior including mate localization during courtship. Using the midshipman fish model, we tested the hypothesis that the time spent by females attending and responding to the advertisement call is correlated with the activation of a specific subset of catecholaminergic (CA) and social decision-making network (SDM) nuclei underlying auditory- driven sexual motivation. In addition, we quantified the relationship of neural activation between CA and SDM nuclei in all responders with the goal of providing a map of functional connectivity of the circuitry underlying a motivated state responsive to acoustic cues during mate localization. In order to make a baseline qualitative comparison of this functional brain map to unmotivated females, we made a similar correlative comparison of brain activation in females who were unresponsive to the advertisement call playback. Our results support an important role for dopaminergic neurons in the periventricular posterior tuberculum and ventral thalamus, putative A11 and A13 tetrapod homologues, respectively, as well as the posterior parvocellular preoptic area and dorsomedial telencephalon, (laterobasal amygdala homologue) in auditory attention and appetitive sexual behavior in fishes. These findings may also offer insights into the function of these highly conserved nuclei in the context of auditory-driven reproductive social behavior across vertebrates.
