RESUMEN

Understanding the processes of adaptive divergence, which may ultimately lead to speciation, is a major question in evolutionary biology. Allochronic differentiation refers to a particular situation where gene flow is primarily impeded by temporal isolation between early and late reproducers. This process has been suggested to occur in a large array of organisms, even though it is still overlooked in the literature. We here focused on a well-documented case of incipient allochronic speciation in the winter pine processionary moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa. This species typically reproduces in summer and larval development occurs throughout autumn and winter. A unique, phenologically shifted population (SP) was discovered in 1997 in Portugal. It was proved to be strongly differentiated from the sympatric "winter population" (WP), but its evolutionary history could only now be explored. We took advantage of the recent assembly of a draft genome and of the development of pan-genomic RAD-seq markers to decipher the demographic history of the differentiating populations and develop genome scans of adaptive differentiation. We showed that the SP diverged relatively recently, that is, few hundred years ago, and went through two successive bottlenecks followed by population size expansions, while the sympatric WP is currently experiencing a population decline. We identified outlier SNPs that were mapped onto the genome, but none were associated with the phenological shift or with subsequent adaptations. The strong genetic drift that occurred along the SP lineage certainly challenged our capacity to reveal functionally important loci.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Cancer in women is a major public health concern especially since primary and secondary prevention can reduce mortality. Institutional interventions could play an important role by working directly with healthcare providers. Thus, the objective of this literature review is to draw up an inventory of the interventions proposed to promote the prevention of breast and cervical cancer and to analyze their feasibility or applicability in the French institutional context. METHODS: The literature review was conducted on Cairn, Cochrane, PubMed and ScienceDirect databases with relevant keywords. RESULTS: Forty articles were selected. Interventions focusing on breast and cervical cancer have been quite similar. The format is usually a written document presenting a personalized letter inviting the recipient to participate in a screening program. Paper or call reminders are pivotal tools. Educational groups involving a few sessions, as well as individual education, are particularly important to increase women's knowledge about lesser known prevention behaviors (ex. breast self-examination). CONCLUSION: This work points out concrete ways to establish relevant actions for secondary prevention of cancer in women. A personalized approach (ex., sending personalized letters) appears to be a relevant lever to incite women to participate.

RESUMEN

Asthma, a common chronic disease characterized by variable levels of severity, requires patient-centered management to achieve the best health outcomes. Studies have highlighted the gap between consensus management recommendations and patient goals, which represent a potential source of therapeutic wandering and of poor compliance. Patient expectations are continually evolving and are dependent on knowledge, feelings and individual experience. From this perspective, listening carefully to patients and caregivers makes it easier to exchange views and define common goals. The active participation of patients at all levels of decision-making and transmission of information may improve asthma control and other quality of life parameters.

RESUMEN

Previous studies indicate that some populations of the little fire ant, Wasmannia auropunctata, display an unusual reproduction system polymorphism. Although some populations have a classical haplodiploid reproduction system, in other populations queens are produced by thelytokous parthenogenesis, males are produced by a male clonality system and workers are produced sexually. An atypical genetic caste determination system was also suggested. However, these conclusions were indirectly inferred from genetic studies on field population samples. Here we set up experimental laboratory nests that allow the control of the parental relationships between individuals. The queens heading those nests originated from either putatively clonal or sexual populations. We characterized the male, queen and worker offspring they produced at 12 microsatellite loci. Our results unambiguously confirm the unique reproduction system polymorphism mentioned above and that male clonality is strictly associated with thelytokous parthenogenesis. We also observed direct evidence of the rare production of sexual gynes and arrhenotokous males in clonal populations. Finally, we obtained evidence of a genetic basis for caste determination. The evolutionary significance of the reproduction system polymorphism and genetic caste determination as well as future research opportunities are discussed.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Education in COPD is clearly recommended. The general practitioner (GP) plays a key role in COPD management, and his view on education in medicine is crucial for him to implement it. This work aims at exploring what is the GP's representation of education in COPD. METHODS: Twenty-seven GP were enrolled in this qualitative research focused on three points: "COPD patient", "COPD patient's education", "tools in COPD patient education". The interviews processing has been carried out by an ALCESTE software (Analysis of Co-occurrent Lexemes in the Simple Terms of a Text) that extracts the key significant structures of a text. RESULTS: Actually, the GPs do not really speak about therapeutic education, they have a rather fuzzy representation of it. They face, in their daily practice, a lack of patients' awareness of the disease, they call to mind an educational model group close to the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and the most adequate location for this education looks to be, for them, the hospital. The emotional dimension is noticed, targeted atthe patient and his family circle. In their relationship with their patients, the GPs describe their part as more prescriptive than educative. CONCLUSION: The GPs' speech analysis shows that education is not a part of their COPD management; the results of our study enable us to foresee the actions to carry out to develop the concept of COPD education in general practice.

RESUMEN

An ethnomedical and ethnopharmacological research on the traditional use of plants to cure human diseases was carried out in the Thomonde area located in the Central Plateau of Haiti. The use of medicinal plants is widespread among the rural population and is often the first treatment utilized. An ethnomedical approach to the Haitian traditional therapeutic system and popular beliefs is made. The percentage home remedies used as first treatment against 38 diseases was determined by means of an investigation performed on a quantitative scale.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Asthma education is a subject of topical interest and is included in the current guidelines. Everyone agrees on the importance of the concepts of the disease in determining the patient's therapeutic behaviour but there have been few studies of the patient's views on asthma education. METHODS: 42 asthmatics replied to an interview bearing on the following themes: asthma in daily life, therapeutic education and methods of education. The interviews were analysed by the ALCESTE software programme (analysis of co-occurrent lexemes in the simple wording of a text) that extracts the major significant components of a text. RESULTS: The first theme was dominated by thoughts about treatment, long term rather than acute, and by problems of everyday life and relationships with others; the second by the organisation, presentation and form of education and the third by thoughts about the information required, its relevance and implications. CONCLUSIONS: Asthmatic patients' concepts of therapeutic education are poorly defined. There expectations are implicit but they are not fully aware of them. Clarifying these factors will be a way of creating a better basis for an educational programme.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic education is part of the recommendations for management of asthmatics. The general practitioner (GP) is an essential link in the management and his/her presentation of education plays an important role in how it is received. This study examines the presentation of therapeutic education by GP's. METHODS: 21 GP's took part in a qualitative enquiry bearing on the following themes: "the asthmatic" and "education of the asthmatic patient". The interviews were analysed by the ALCESTE software programme (Analysis of co- occurrent leximes in the wording of a text) which allows the extraction of the major significant structures of a text. RESULTS: It was found that GP's associate therapeutic education with education in general. They evoke self-teaching tools while they retain the group as the most relevant structure. The notions of time and background treatment were separated. The idea of patient autonomy did not appear spontaneously in the discussion even though it is the foundation of the concept. Analysis of the discussion illustrates the gap that exists between the concepts upon which the recommendations are based and presentation of therapeutic education to asthmatics by GP's. CONCLUSION: Training of GP's appears to be an essential condition for the development of therapeutic education.
