RESUMEN

Scattering matrix theory is used to describe resonant optical properties of molecular monolayers. Three types of coupling are included: exciton-exciton, exciton-photon, and exciton-phonon coupling. We use the K-matrix formalism, developed originally to describe neutron scattering spectra in nuclear physics to compute the scattering of polaritons by phonons. This perturbation approach takes into account the three couplings and allows one to go beyond molecular exciton theory without the need of introducing additional boundary conditions for the polariton. We demonstrate that reflection, absorption, and extinction of light by 2D self-assembled monolayers of molecules containing quinque-thiophene chromophoric groups can be calculated. The extracted coherence length of the Frenkel exciton is discussed.

RESUMEN

The threshold voltage is an important property of organic field-effect transistors. By applying a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on the gate dielectric, the value can be tuned. After electrical characterization, the semiconductor is delaminated. The surface potentials of the revealed SAM perfectly agree with the threshold voltages, which demonstrate that the shift is not due to the dipolar contribution, but due to charge trapping by the SAM.

RESUMEN

The photophysics of fully and partially covered self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of a quinquethiophene (5T) derivative have been investigated. The monolayers behave as H-aggregates. The fluorescence of fully covered SAMs is weak and red-shifted, and the extinction is blue-shifted as compared to that of single molecules. The fluorescence of partially covered SAMs is dominated by that of single molecules on the surface. The extinction spectra are similar for fully and partially covered monolayers, which show that even the smallest islands are H-aggregates. The extinction spectra furthermore closely resemble those for 5T single crystals, which demonstrates that in oligothiophene crystals the intermolecular interactions within one layer molecules are stronger than the interlayer electronic coupling.

RESUMEN

We report on a two-dimensional highly ordered self-assembled monolayer (SAM) directly grown on a bare polymer surface. Semiconducting SAMs are utilized in field-effect transistors and combined into integrated circuits as 4-bit code generators. The driving force to form highly ordered SAMs is packing of the liquid crystalline molecules caused by the interactions between the linear alkane moieties and the pi-pi stacking of the conjugated thiophene units. The fully functional circuits demonstrate long-range order over large areas, which can be regarded as the start of flexible monolayer electronics.

RESUMEN

Septithiophene with endgroups designed to form liquid crystalline phases and allows controlled deposition of an electrically connected monolayer. Field effect mobilies mobilities of charge carriers and spectroscopic properties of the monolayer provide evidence of sustainable transport and delocalization of the excitation through intermolecular interactions within the layer.
