RESUMEN

Two-stage multipass-cell compression of a fiber-chirped-pulse amplifier system to the few-cycle regime is presented. The output delivers a sub-2-cycle (5.8 fs), 107 W average power, 1.07 mJ pulses at 100 kHz centered at 1030 nm with excellent spatial beam quality (M2 = 1.1, Strehl ratio S = 0.98), pointing stability (2.3 µrad), and superior long-term average power stability of 0.1% STD over more than 8 hours. This is combined with a carrier-envelope phase stability of 360 mrad in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 50 kHz, i.e., measured on a single-shot basis. This unique system will serve as an HR1 laser for the Extreme Light Infrastructure Attosecond Light Pulse Source research facility to enable high repetition rate isolated attosecond pulse generation.

RESUMEN

The impact of nonlinear refraction and residual absorption on the achievable peak- and average power in beam-splitter-based coherent beam combination is analyzed theoretically. While the peak power remains limited only by the aperture size, a fundamental average power limit is given by the thermo-optical and thermo-mechanical properties of the beam splitter material and its coatings. Based on our analysis, 100 kW average power can be obtained with state-of-the-art optics at maintained high beam quality (M2 ≤ 1.1) and at only 2% loss of combining efficiency. This result indicates that the power-scaling potential of today's beam-splitter-based coherent beam combination is far from being depleted. A potential scaling route to megawatt-level average power is discussed for optimized beam splitter geometry.

RESUMEN

We present a high-power source of broadband terahertz (THz) radiation covering the whole THz spectral region (0.1-30 THz). The two-color gas plasma generation process is driven by a state-of-the-art ytterbium fiber chirped pulse amplification system based on coherent combination of 16 rod-type amplifiers. Prior to the THz generation, the pulses are spectrally broadened in a multipass cell and compressed to 37 fs with a pulse energy of 1.3 mJ at a repetition rate of 500 kHz. A gas-jet scheme has been employed for the THz generation, increasing the efficiency of the process to 0.1%. The air-biased coherent detection scheme is implemented to characterize the full bandwidth of the generated radiation. A THz average power of 640 mW is generated, which is the highest THz average power achieved to date. This makes this source suitable for a variety of applications, e.g., spectroscopy of strongly absorbing samples or driving nonlinear effects for the studies of material properties.

RESUMEN

A multipass cell for nonlinear compression to few-cycle pulse duration is introduced composing dielectrically enhanced silver mirrors on silicon substrates. Spectral broadening with 388 W output average power and 776 µJ pulse energy is obtained at 82% cell transmission. A high output beam quality (${{\rm{M}}^2} \lt {1.2}$) and a high spatio-spectral homogeneity (97.5%), as well as the compressibility of the output pulses to 6.9 fs duration, are demonstrated. A finite element analysis reveals scalability of this cell to 2 kW average output power.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate the reliable generation of 1-mJ, 31-fs pulses with an average power of 1 kW by post-compression of 200-fs pulses from a coherently combined Yb:fiber laser system in an argon-filled Herriott-type multi-pass cell with an overall compression efficiency of 96%. We also analyze the output beam, revealing essentially no spatiospectral couplings or beam quality loss.

RESUMEN

We present a laser system based on a 48 cm long optical glass resonator. The large size requires a sophisticated thermal control and optimized mounting design. A self-balancing mounting was essential to reliably reach sensitivities to acceleration of below Δν/ν<2×10(-10)/g in all directions. Furthermore, fiber noise cancellations from a common reference point near the laser diode to the cavity mirror and to additional user points (Sr clock and frequency comb) are implemented. Through comparison with other cavity-stabilized lasers and with a strontium lattice clock, instability of below 1×10(-16) at averaging times from 1 to 1000 s is revealed.

RESUMEN

Cryogenic single-crystal optical cavities have the potential to provide high dimensional stability. We have investigated the long-term performance of an ultrastable laser system that is stabilized to a single-crystal silicon cavity operated at 124 K. Utilizing a frequency comb, the laser is compared to a hydrogen maser that is referenced to a primary caesium fountain standard and to the 87Sr optical lattice clock at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). With fractional frequency instabilities of σ(y)(τ)≤2×10(-16) for averaging times of τ=60 s to 1000 s and σ(y)(1 d)≤2×10(-15) the stability of this laser, without any aid from an atomic reference, surpasses the best known microwave standards for short averaging times and is competitive with the best known hydrogen masers for longer times of 1 day. The comparison of modeled thermal response of the cavity with measured data indicates an average fractional frequency drift below 5×10(-19)/s, which we do not expect to be a fundamental limit.

RESUMEN

We report on a passively mode-locked optically pumped GaSb-based semiconductor disk laser producing stable picosecond optical pulses at a 1.95 µm wavelength. The gain mirror was comprised of a 15 quantum well InGaSb/GaSb structure. A fast semiconductor saturable absorber mirror with three InGaSb/GaSb quantum wells was used to attain self-starting mode-locked operation at a fundamental repetition rate of 881.2 MHz. The laser produced pulses with 30 pJ energy and a duration of 1.1 ps within a factor of 2 of the Fourier limit.

RESUMEN

A concept for orthogonal control of phase and group delay inside a laser cavity by a specially designed compensator assembly is discussed. Similar to the construction of variable polarization retarder, this assembly consists of two thin wedge prisms made from appropriately chosen optical materials. Being shifted as a whole, the assembly allows changing the phase delay with no influence on the cavity round-trip time, whereas relative shifting of the prisms enables adjustment of the latter. This scheme is discussed theoretically and verified experimentally, indicating a factor 30 reduction of the influence on the repetition rate compared to the commonly used silica wedge pair. For a 2pi adjustment of the carrier-envelope phase shift, single-pass timing differences are reduced to the single-femtosecond regime. With negligible distortions of timing and dispersion, the described compensator device greatly simplifies carrier-envelope phase control and experiments in extreme nonlinear optics.

RESUMEN

We propose a novel method to directly extract the phase from spectral interferograms, without the need for digital signal processing. This method is demonstrated with single-shot measurement and stabilization of the carrier-envelope phase of a 3 kHz amplifier system. Our scheme allows for real-time monitoring of the carrier-envelope drift and an increased loop width for stabilization. We find that in our amplifier laser system fast carrier-envelope phase jitter is mainly inherited from the oscillator stabilization loop but we also find previously unreported indications for a rapid pulse-to-pulse jitter from the amplifier pump laser.

RESUMEN

We propose and demonstrate a novel linear procedure for measurement of the carrier-envelope offset (CEO) phase of femtosecond oscillators. The technique is based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, a ring resonator, and a spectrograph. In this scheme, interference between subsequent pulses from a pulse train may frustrate the interference between identical pulses in the Mach-Zehnder, resulting in a modification of interference contrast depending on the CEO phase. We suggest spectrally and spatially resolved interferometry for robust detection of the fringe visibility. It is shown by numerical simulations and experimentally demonstrated that the visibility of such fringes uniquely depends on the CEO phase of the pulse train. Since the method relies only on linear interactions and does not require any nonlinear conversion, it allows characterizing the CEO frequency of mode-locked oscillators with virtually arbitrarily low bandwidth and power levels.
