BACKGROUND: The Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi) and the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) are closely related species and are partially sympatric in southern China. Over the past 20 years, R. tanezumi has significantly expanded northward in China and partially replaced the native brown rat subspecies, R. n. humiliatus. Although invasive species are often more aggressive than native species, we did not observe interspecific physical aggression between R. tanezumi and R. n. humiliatus. Here, we focused on whether or not R. tanezumi was superior to R. n. humiliatus in terms of nonphysical competition, which is primarily mediated by chemical signals. RESULTS: We performed two laboratory experiments to test different paradigms in domesticated R. tanezumi and R. n. humiliatus. In Experiment 1, we caged adult male rats of each species for 2 months in heterospecific or conspecific pairs, partitioned by perforated galvanized iron sheets, allowing exchange of chemical stimuli and ultrasonic vocalization. The sexual attractiveness of male urine odor showed a tendency (marginal significance) to increase in R. tanezumi caged with R. n. humiliatus, compared with those in conspecific pairs. Hippocampal glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and brain-derived nutrition factor (BDNF) mRNA were upregulated in R. n. humiliatus and R. tanezumi, respectively, when the rats were caged in heterospecific pairs. In Experiment 2, we kept juvenile male rats in individual cages in rooms with either the same or the different species for 2 months, allowing chemical interaction. The sexual attractiveness of male urine was significantly enhanced in R. tanezumi, but reduced in R. n. humiliatus by heterospecific cues and mRNA expression of hippocampal GR and BDNF were upregulated by heterospecific cues in R. n. humiliatus and R. tanezumi, respectively. Although not identical, the results from Experiments 1 and 2 were generally consistent. CONCLUSIONS: The results of both experiments indicate that nonphysical/chronic interspecific stimuli, particularly scent signals, between R. n. humiliatus and R. tanezumi may negatively affect R. n. humiliatus and positively affect R. tanezumi. We infer that chronic interspecific interactions may have contributed to the invasion of R. tanezumi into the range of R. n. humiliatus in natural habitats.

AIM: We report the clinical characteristics and experience of the surgical management of ureteral endometriosis in our institution. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of patients with hydronephrosis resulting from ureteral endometriosis. RESULTS: Forty-six patients with different degrees of hydronephrosis were included in the study; 35% had urinary tract symptoms. Concomitant involvement of the ipsilateral ovary occurred in more than two-thirds of the patients. Four patients had nephrectomy, one of which involved ureterolysis because of hydronephrosis recurrence six months later. CONCLUSIONS: Hydronephrosis may be caused by uncommon reasons, such as ureteral endometriosis, which can even cause silent loss of renal function. Routine ultrasound scanning of the upper urinary tract for severe stages of endometriosis is very important in order to detect any potential ureteral lesions. Ureterolysis should be considered as the first surgical step, not only to avoid iatrogenic ureteral injuries but also to better evaluate ureter involvement for further procedures. To warrant tension-free and lesion-free anastomosis, it is wise to perform ureteroneocystostomy for long-term sound results.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a characterization system of traditional Chinese medicinal properties in line with modern scientific cognition regularity, in order to reveal properties of traditional Chinese medicines distributed along liver meridian and relations of effects of medicinal properties. METHOD: By collecting data about traditional Chinese medicinal properties recorded in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China (2005 Edition), literature and data about pharmacological effects of traditional Chinese medicines recorded in the Chinese Materia Medica, by using the method of association rules, the authors dug pharmacological effect rules corresponds to relevant medicinal property combinations, with the medicinal property combination of traditional Chinese medicines distributed along liver meridian as the target. RESULT: It was found that either obvious different pharmacological effects or identical pharmacological characteristics existed in traditional Chinese medicines distributed along liver meridian. CONCLUSION: With the aim to explore the correlations between traditional Chinese medicine medicinal properties and pharmacological effects, the authors linked the traditional Chinese medicine theory with modern research achievements, in order to provide the ideas and methods for interpreting mechanisms of medicinal properties.

RESUMEN

The prescription combinations of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) focuses on the taste and channel tropism, the Qi movement, as well as the compatibility according to multiple combination principles and medicinal property and flavor combination of several traditional Chinese medicines. With the in-depth study on the prescription compatibility, researchers have realized that the medicinal property theory is the core of TCM combinations. However, there is no definite method for combinations based on medicinal properties. In this paper, the authors put forward an method for designing prescription combinations based on bipartite graph and the greedy algorithm. With the medicinal property combinations of Siweilurong Pills for example, the authors proved this method could provide ideas for quickly choosing herbal medicines for prescription combinations, and discussed the prospect of this method in substituting previous and endangered herbal medicines and banned medicinal materials.

At present, studies on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) properties are mostly restricted to a single or two kinds of medicinal properties, but deviated from the holism of the theoretical system of TCMs. In this paper, the characteristics of pharmacological effects of different property combinations of TCMs distributing in the stomach meridian were take as the study objective. The data of properties of TCMs distributing in the stomach meridian was collected from the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China (2005). The data of pharmacological effects of TCMs distributing in the stomach meridian was collected from all of literatures recorded in Chinese Journal Full-text Database (CNKI) since 1980, Science of Chinese Materia Medica (Yan Zhenghua, People's Medical Publishing House, 2006) and Clinical Science of Chinese Materia Medica (Gao Xuemin, Zhong Gansheng, Hebei Science and Technology Publishing House, 2005). The corresponding pharmacological effects of property combinations of TCMs distributing in the stomach meridian was mined by the method of association rules. The results of the association rules were consistent with the empirical knowledge, and showed that different medicinal property combinations had respective pharmacological characteristics, including differences and similarities in pharmacological effects of different medicinal property combinations. Medicinal property combinations with identical four properties or five tastes showed similar pharmacological effects; whereas medicinal property combinations with different four properties or five tastes showed differentiated pharmacological effects. However, medicinal property combinations with different four properties or five tastes could also show similar pharmacological effects. In this study, the medicinal property theory and the pharmacological effects of TCMs were combined to reveal the main characteristics and regularity of pharmacological effects of TCMs distributing in the stomach meridian and provide a new way of thinking and method for revealing the mechanism action of TCMs distributing in the stomach meridian and discovering the pharmacological effects of TCMs distributing in the stomach meridian.

RESUMEN

Opium poppy, coca and cannabis are raw materials for three notorious illicit drugs. For a long time, drug lords have been growing and smuggling these drugs in a variety of ways and channels and are continually finding new ways of trafficking their wares, which has led to the increasing difficulty of global drug enforcement. In the present paper, we propose an innovative pollen identification system for these important drug plants, which provides a tool for screening and detection of the drugs to aid in drug enforcement. By utilizing the characteristics of these fine particles, their abundant production, and high resistance to decay, we believe this tool could be applied in the following scenarios: detecting and dynamically monitoring drug cultivation activities; determining whether a suspect has been to fields of drug plants and determining whether the site has ever been planted with a drug plant and/or was involved in drug production. In the future, combined with microscope automatic image acquisition technology and intelligent image recognition technology, this pollen identification system is expected to be used to screen three notorious illicit drug plants, thus enhancing the efficiency of drug related crime investigations.

Sample extraction is a crucial step in forensic analysis, especially when dealing with trace and ultra-trace levels of target analytes present in various complex matrices (e. g., soil, biological samples, and fire debris). Conventional sample preparation techniques include Soxhlet extraction and liquid-liquid extraction. However, these techniques are tedious, time-consuming, labor-intensive and require large amounts of solvents, which poses a threat to the environment and health of researchers. Moreover, sample loss and secondary pollution can easily occur during the preparation procedure. Conversely, the solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique either requires a small amount of solvent or no solvent at all. Its small and portable size, simple and fast operation, easy-to-realize automation, and other characteristics thus make it a widely used sample pretreatment technique. More attention was given to the preparation of SPME coatings by using various functional materials, as commercialized SPME devices used in early studies were expensive, fragile, and lacked selectivity. Examples of those functional materials include metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, carbon-based materials, molecularly imprinted polymers, ionic liquids, and conducting polymers, all widely used in environmental monitoring, food analysis, and drug detection. However, these SPME coating materials have relatively few applications in forensics. Given the high potential of SPME technology for the in situ and efficient extraction of samples from crime scenes, this study briefly introduces functional coating materials and summarizes the applications of SPME coating materials for the analysis of explosives, ignitable liquids, illicit drugs, poisons, paints, and human odors. Compared to commercial coatings, functional material-based SPME coatings exhibit higher selectivity, sensitivity, and stability. These advantages are mainly achieved through the following approaches: First, the selectivity can be improved by increasing the π-π, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions between the materials and analytes. Second, the sensitivity can be improved by using porous materials or by increasing their porosity. Third, thermal, chemical, and mechanical stability can be improved by using robust materials or fixing the chemical bonding between the coating and substrate. In addition, composite materials with multiple advantages are gradually replacing the single materials. In terms of the substrate, the silica support was gradually replaced by the metal support. This study also outlines the existing shortcomings in forensic science analysis of functional material-based SPME techniques. First, the application of functional material-based SPME techniques in forensic science remains limited. On one hand, the analytes are narrow in scope. As far as explosive analysis is concerned, functional material-based SPME coatings are mainly applied to nitrobenzene explosives, while other categories, such as nitroamine and peroxides, are rarely or never involved. Research and development of coatings is insufficient and the application of COFs in forensic science has not yet been reported. Second, functional material-based SPME coatings have not been commercialized as they don't yet have inter-laboratory validation tests or established official standard analytical methods. Therefore, some suggestions are proposed for the future development of forensic science analyses of functional material-based SPME coatings. First, research and development of functional material-based SPME coatings, especially fiber coatings with broad-spectrum applicability and high sensitivity, or outstanding selectivity for some compounds, is still an important direction for SPME future research. Second, a theoretical calculation of the binding energy between the analyte and coating was introduced to guide the design of functional coatings and improve the screening efficiency of new coatings. Third, we expand its application in forensic science by expanding the number of analytes. Fourth, we focused on the promotion of functional material-based SPME coatings in conventional laboratories and established performance evaluation protocols for the commercialization of functional material-based SPME coatings. This study is expected to serve as a reference for peers engaged in related research.

Male animals with more conspicuous visual and acoustic signals increase their mating success, but also increase the risk of being attacked by eavesdropping predators. In rodents, males with richer sex pheromones often have higher attractiveness to females, but whether or not the males are also at higher predation risk is poorly known. Here, we used 2 laboratory inbred strains of the rat Rattus norvegicus, Brown Norway (BN) and Lewis (LEW), and wild-captured rats as odor donors to assess the relationship between the pheromone levels in male rats and attractiveness to domestic cats Felis catus. LEW rats had significantly higher levels of male pheromones (e.g., 4-heptanone, 2-heptanone, and 9-hydroxy-2-nonanone) than BN rats. Simultaneously, wild-captured male rats were selectively assigned to 2 groups (HIGH or LOW) based on pheromone content as determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Binary choice tests were carried out during the night in the test room. We found that cats spent more time investigating male bedding and urine of LEW rats than the counterpart of BN rats. Likewise, cats also preferred bedding and urine odor of the HIGH wild rats compared with the counterparts of LOW wild rats. Adding synthetic analogs of the 3 pheromone ketones into the urine of either BN rats or LOW wild rats significantly increased their attractiveness to cats. Our data suggest that the rats with exaggerated male pheromones more strongly attracted predators and thus as a consequence may suffer from elevated predation risk.

The plants of the genus Phyllanthus (Euphorbiaceae) have been used as traditional medicinal materials for a long time in China, India, Brazil, and the Southeast Asian countries. They can be used for the treatment of digestive disease, jaundice, and renal calculus. This review discusses the ethnopharmacological, phytochemical, and pharmacological studies of Phyllanthus over the past few decades. More than 510 compounds have been isolated, the majority of which are lignins, triterpenoids, flavonoids, and tannins. The researches of their remarkable antiviral, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anticancer activities have become hot topics. More pharmacological screenings and phytochemical investigations are required to support the traditional uses and develop leading compounds.
