RESUMEN
Animals can learn in real-life scenarios where rewards are often only available when a goal is achieved. This 'distal' or 'sparse' reward problem remains a challenge for conventional reinforcement learning algorithms. Here we investigate an algorithm for learning in such scenarios, inspired by the possibility that axo-axonal gap junction connections, observed in neural circuits with parallel fibres such as the insect mushroom body, could form a resistive network. In such a network, an active node represents the task state, connections between nodes represent state transitions and their connection to actions, and current flow to a target state can guide decision making. Building on evidence that gap junction weights are adaptive, we propose that experience of a task can modulate the connections to form a graph encoding the task structure. We demonstrate that the approach can be used for efficient reinforcement learning under sparse rewards, and discuss whether it is plausible as an account of the insect mushroom body.

Peatlands are known sinks for arsenic (As). In the present study, seasonal As mobilization was observed in an acidic, minerotrophic peatland (called Lehstenbach) in late summer, accompanied by a peak in dissolved sulfide (S(-II)). Arsenic speciation revealed the lowest seasonal porewater concentrations of arsenite and arsenate, likely due to As(III)-S-bridging to natural organic matter. Arsenic mobilization was driven by the formation of arsenite-S(-II) colloids and formation of methylthiolated arsenates (up to 59% of the sum of As species) and to a minor extent also of inorganic thioarsenates (6%-30%) and oxymethylated arsenates (5%-24%). Sorption experiments using a purified model peat, the Lehstenbach peat, natural (to mimic winter conditions) and reacted with S(-II) (to mimic late summer conditions) at acidic and neutral pH confirmed low sorption of methylthiolated arsenates. At acidic pH and in the presence of S(-II), oxymethylated arsenates were completely thiolated. This methylthiolation decreased As sorption up to 10 and 20 times compared with oxymethylated arsenates and arsenite, respectively. At neutral pH, thiolation of monomethylated arsenates was incomplete, and As could be partially retained as oxymethylated arsenates. Dimethylated arsenate was still fully thiolated and highly mobile. Misidentification of methylthiolated arsenates as oxymethylated arsenates might explain previous contradictory reports of methylation decreasing or increasing As mobility.

Backpropagation has rapidly become the workhorse credit assignment algorithm for modern deep learning methods. Recently, modified forms of predictive coding (PC), an algorithm with origins in computational neuroscience, have been shown to result in approximately or exactly equal parameter updates to those under backpropagation. Due to this connection, it has been suggested that PC can act as an alternative to backpropagation with desirable properties that may facilitate implementation in neuromorphic systems. Here, we explore these claims using the different contemporary PC variants proposed in the literature. We obtain time complexity bounds for these PC variants, which we show are lower bounded by backpropagation. We also present key properties of these variants that have implications for neurobiological plausibility and their interpretations, particularly from the perspective of standard PC as a variational Bayes algorithm for latent probabilistic models. Our findings shed new light on the connection between the two learning frameworks and suggest that in its current forms, PC may have more limited potential as a direct replacement of backpropagation than previously envisioned.
RESUMEN
Hot springs represent a major source of arsenic release into the environment. Speciation is typically reported to be dominated by arsenite, arsenate, and inorganic thiolated arsenates. Much less is known about the relevance and formation of methylated thioarsenates, a group with species of high mobility and toxicity. In hot spring samples taken from the Tengchong volcanic region in China, methylated thioarsenates contributed up to 13% to total arsenic. Enrichment cultures were obtained from the corresponding sediment samples and incubated to assess their capability to convert arsenite into methylated thioarsenates over time and in the presence of different microbial inhibitors. In contrast to observations in other environmental systems (e.g., paddy soils), there was no solid evidence, supporting that the sulfate-reducing bacteria contributed to the arsenic methylation. Methanosarcina, the sole genus of methanogens detected in the enrichment cultures, as well as Methanosarcina thermophila TM-1, a pure strain within the genus, did methylate arsenic. We propose that methylated thioarsenates in a typical sulfide-rich hot spring environment like Tengchong form via a combination of biotic arsenic methylation driven by thermophilic methanogens and arsenic thiolation with either geogenic sulfide or sulfide produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria.

The association of arsenic (As) with colloidal particles could facilitate its transport to adjacent water systems or alter its availability in soil-rice systems. However, little is known about the size distribution and composition of particle-bound As in paddy soils, particularly under changing redox conditions. Here, we incubated four As-contaminated paddy soils with distinctive geochemical properties to study the mobilization of particle-bound As during soil reduction and subsequent reoxidation. Using transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy and asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation, we identified organic matter (OM)-stabilized colloidal Fe, most likely in the form of (oxy)hydroxide-clay composite, as the main arsenic carriers. Specifically, colloidal As was mainly associated with two size fractions of 0.3-40 and >130 kDa. Soil reduction facilitated the release of As from both fractions, whereas reoxidation caused their rapid sedimentation, coinciding with solution Fe variations. Further quantitative analysis demonstrated that As concentrations positively correlated with both Fe and OM concentrations at nanometric scales (0.3-40 kDa) in all studied soils during reduction and reoxidation, yet the correlations are pH-dependent. This study provides a quantitative and size-resolved understanding of particle-bound As in paddy soils, highlighting the importance of nanometric Fe-OM-As interactions in paddy As geochemical cycling.

A total of 12 samples were collected from the Tengchong geothermal areas of Yunnan, China, with the goal to assess the arsenite (AsIII) oxidation potential of the extant microbial communities as inferred by the abundance and diversity of the AsIII oxidase large subunit gene aioA relative to geochemical context. Arsenic concentrations were higher (on average 251.68 µg/L) in neutral or alkaline springs than in acidic springs (on average 30.88 µg/L). aioA abundance ranged from 1.63 × 10(1) to 7.08 × 10(3) per ng of DNA and positively correlated with sulfide and the ratios of arsenate (AsV):total dissolved arsenic (AsTot). Based on qPCR estimates of bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA gene abundance, aioA-harboring organisms comprised as much as ~15% of the total community. Phylogenetically, the major aioA sequences (270 total) in the acidic hot springs (pH 3.3-4.4) were affiliated with Aquificales and Rhizobiales, while those in neutral or alkaline springs (pH 6.6-9.1) were inferred to be primarily bacteria related to Thermales and Burkholderiales. Interestingly, aioA abundance at one site greatly exceeded bacterial 16S rRNA gene abundance, suggesting these aioA genes were archaeal even though phylogenetically these aioA sequences were most similar to the Aquificales. In summary, this study described novel aioA sequences in geothermal features geographically far removed from those in the heavily studied Yellowstone geothermal complex.

Scientific interpretation of the relationships between urban landscape patterns and water quality is important for sustainable urban planning and watershed environmental protection. This study applied the ordinary least squares regression model and the geographically weighted regression model to examine the spatially varying relationships between 12 explanatory variables (including three topographical factors, four land use parameters, and five landscape metrics) and 15 water quality indicators in watersheds of Yundang Lake, Maluan Bay, and Xinglin Bay with varying levels of urbanization in Xiamen City, China. A local and global investigation was carried out at the watershed-level, with 50 and 200 m riparian buffer scales. This study found that topographical features and landscape metrics are the dominant factors of water quality, while land uses are too weak to be considered as a strong influential factor on water quality. Such statistical results may be related with the characteristics of land use compositions in our study area. Water quality variations in the 50 m buffer were dominated by topographical variables. The impact of landscape metrics on water quality gradually strengthen with expanding buffer zones. The strongest relationships are obtained in entire watersheds, rather than in 50 and 200 m buffer zones. Spatially varying relationships and effective buffer zones were verified in this study. Spatially varying relationships between explanatory variables and water quality parameters are more diversified and complex in less urbanized areas than in highly urbanized areas. This study hypothesizes that all these varying relationships may be attributed to the heterogeneity of landscape patterns in different urban regions. Adjustment of landscape patterns in an entire watershed should be the key measure to successfully improving urban lake water quality.

The integration of landsenses ecology encompasses both the ecological and perceptual effects on the ecological environment. Although the theoretical framework has gradually matured, challenges persist, including a lack of research strength, incomplete evaluation systems, and ambiguous disciplinary boundaries. Therefore, a systematic review of landsense research is necessary to analyze its characteristics and explore future research trends to ensure that landscape ecology will flourish. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis of 37 Chinese articles from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and 46 English articles from Web of Science (WOS). As an emerging field in ecology, landsenses has grown in recent years. However, interconnectedness among the research teams is weak. The CNKI literature tends to be concentrated, with 70.27 % of the articles appearing in the journal Acta Ecologica Sinica. Researchers are predominantly affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with fewer contributions from other institutions and universities. Future directions for landsenses ecology are outlined, including (1) enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration with emerging technologies, such as VR and AI, (2) refining quantifiable landsense metrics and evaluation systems, and (3) establishing a normal model and criteria for landsense creation services. By discussing the disciplinary boundaries and application of landsenses ecology, this study contributes a theoretical reference value for its development. This study proposes the concepts and associated contents of landsenses ecology and mixed marching data and explains the role of the meliorization model and Internet of Things (IoT) in landsenses ecology-based land-use planning, construction, and management. Utilizing the results of bibliometric research, this study proposes recommendations for the future application and theoretical development of landsenses ecology. These suggestions aim to bolster landsenses ecology application practices and theoretical foundations, enabling a more significant contribution to ecosystem services and facilitating sustainable development strategies.
RESUMEN
Spiking neural networks (SNNs), known for their low-power, event-driven computation, and intrinsic temporal dynamics, are emerging as promising solutions for processing dynamic, asynchronous signals from event-based sensors. Despite their potential, SNNs face challenges in training and architectural design, resulting in limited performance in challenging event-based dense prediction tasks compared with artificial neural networks (ANNs). In this work, we develop an efficient spiking encoder-decoder network (SpikingEDN) for large-scale event-based semantic segmentation (EbSS) tasks. To enhance the learning efficiency from dynamic event streams, we harness the adaptive threshold which improves network accuracy, sparsity, and robustness in streaming inference. Moreover, we develop a dual-path spiking spatially adaptive modulation (SSAM) module, which is specifically tailored to enhance the representation of sparse events and multimodal inputs, thereby considerably improving network performance. Our SpikingEDN attains a mean intersection over union (MIoU) of 72.57% on the DDD17 dataset and 58.32% on the larger DSEC-Semantic dataset, showing competitive results to the state-of-the-art ANNs while requiring substantially fewer computational resources. Our results shed light on the untapped potential of SNNs in event-based vision applications. The source codes are publicly available at https://github.com/EMI-Group/spikingedn.

Hydrotalcite, takovite and their calcination products were used to remove fluoride from water at various molar ratios of initial fluoride to solid (F(initial):hydrotalcite or F(initial):takovite) ranging from 0.1 to 2.0, and their theoretical fluoride uptake limit. X-Ray powder diffraction and 19F magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectra were used to characterize the solid samples and to investigate the fluoride removal mechanisms. Water defluoridation by uncalcined and calcined hydrotalcite attributes mainly to the intercalation of F- into their interlayers and adsorption of F- onto their external surfaces. The fluoride removal percent of calcined hydrotalcite are higher than those of uncalcined hydrotalcite at F(initial):hydrotalcite ratios varying between 0.1 and 1.5, whereas the situation is the reverse at a ratio of 2.0 in the 30 d sorption runs. It was induced by the precipitation of fluoride-bearing nordstrandite and sellaite during a long contact of high concentration fluoride solution with uncalcined hydrotalcite. In contrast, the sorption of fluoride by uncalcined and calcined takovite occurs predominantly on their external surfaces. Fluoride-bearing gibbsite or nordstrandite and NiF2 were formed as the fluoride solutions were treated by uncalcined takovite in the 30 d runs, which enhanced its defluoridation effect. The fluoride removal efficiency of calcined takovite is much lower than uncalcined takovite and calcined hydrotalcite, because the expected restoration of original layered structure of takovite did not happen during the reaction of calcined takovite with the fluoride solution.

Cr(VI) is of great concern to public health and environmental safety due to its high toxicity. Here, we report a low-cost yet highly efficient method to prepare a novel LDH, ultra-thin layered meixnerite, which performed superiorly in treatment of aqueous Cr(VI) with little secondary pollution being induced. The produced ultra-thin layered meixnerite was composed of nanoparticles with a thickness of around 7 nm, less than 9 times the thickness of a single LDH layer. The XRD patterns of the ultra-thin layered meixnerite, in which the characteristic diffraction peaks of a typical LDH were weakened or even disappeared, confirmed the successful delamination. This special morphology of the ultra-thin layered meixnerite was not only helpful to its full dispersion in the Cr(VI)-bearing solutions but also facilitated the formation of more active sorption sites on its external surface. As a result, the maximum sorption capacity of UTLM for Cr(VI) removal was 480.9 mg g-1, far higher than that of OM (196.9 mg g-1). In addition to electrostatic attraction and anion exchange, the ultra-thin layered meixnerite could also become restacked during removal of aqueous Cr(VI) to generate inner-sphere complexation, finally inducing an enhanced Cr(VI) uptake. Furthermore, XPS analysis characterized the promotion of the break of Al-OH bond with the increase in temperature, and the Cr-O peak increased correspondingly from 29.69% at 25 °C to 48.77% at 85 °C, resulting that the ultra-thin layered meixnerite could remove Cr(VI) more effectively at higher reaction temperatures. Therefore, ultra-thin layered meixnerite is very suitable for future application in treatment of industrial wastewaters with elevated temperatures.

Recent discoveries of methyl-coenzyme M reductase-encoding genes (mcr) in uncultured archaea beyond traditional euryarchaeotal methanogens have reshaped our view of methanogenesis. However, whether any of these nontraditional archaea perform methanogenesis remains elusive. Here, we report field and microcosm experiments based on 13C-tracer labeling and genome-resolved metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, revealing that nontraditional archaea are predominant active methane producers in two geothermal springs. Archaeoglobales performed methanogenesis from methanol and may exhibit adaptability in using methylotrophic and hydrogenotrophic pathways based on temperature/substrate availability. A five-year field survey found Candidatus Nezhaarchaeota to be the predominant mcr-containing archaea inhabiting the springs; genomic inference and mcr expression under methanogenic conditions strongly suggested that this lineage mediated hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis in situ. Methanogenesis was temperature-sensitive , with a preference for methylotrophic over hydrogenotrophic pathways when incubation temperatures increased from 65° to 75°C. This study demonstrates an anoxic ecosystem wherein methanogenesis is primarily driven by archaea beyond known methanogens, highlighting diverse nontraditional mcr-containing archaea as previously unrecognized methane sources.

High concentrations of tungstate in aqueous systems pose a severe threat to the environment and human health. This study explored the potential of iron-based LDHs to remove tungstate from water. To improve its tungstate uptake capacity, environment-friendly L-asparagine was used to delaminate iron-based LDH synthesized via a coprecipitation method. The successful delamination was proved by AFM, revealing that the thickness of the obtained nanoparticles was approximately 1-2 times that of a single LDH layer. XRD, TEM, and XPS analyses confirmed that the delaminated LDHs were amorphous and ultrathin and had surface defects within their nanosheets that acted as active sites, leading to a very fast tungstate sorption rate and superior tungstate uptake capacity. Notably, the original layered structure of the L-asparagine-treated LDH was recovered upon its reaction with tungstate-bearing solutions, and therefore, the high availability of aqueous tungstate to the interlayer regions during the structural restoration of the delaminated iron-based LDH contributed to its excellent capability of tungstate removal as well. In addition, the tungstate uptake by the delaminated iron-based LDH was not affected substantially by the presence of coexisting anions, implying that the strong inner-sphere complexation between the tungstate and LDH layers with defects (i.e., Fe-O bonds) was the primary mechanism responsible for the tungstate removal. The delamination process described in this paper was validated to be an effective way to enhance the immobilization of tungstate by iron-based LDHs without inducing secondary pollutions, and delaminated iron-based LDHs are promising to be used extensively in the practice of treating tungstate-rich waters.

As a toxic element, tungsten (W) in elevated concentrations, originating from human activities or geological sources, poses a severe threat to the environment. However, there has been a lack of robust remediation techniques focusing on aqueous tungsten contamination with varying initial concentrations, because only recently have the toxicity and the environmental threat of tungsten been fully realized. In this study, the removal of tungsten from an aqueous solution by hydrocalumite was investigated for the first time. Systematic removal experiments were carried out at designated contact time, temperature, and initial tungsten concentration. The results showed that hydrocalumite is capable of effectively removing tungsten under various conditions, especially at high initial tungsten concentrations, with the maximum uptake capacity being up to 1120.5 mg (tungsten)/g (hydrocalumite). The mechanisms of tungsten removal were studied based on the measured chemical compositions of the solution samples and their PHREEQC simulations as well as the solid sample characterization by XRD, SEM-EDX, and XPS. At low initial tungsten concentrations (below 1 mmol/L), anion exchange between the tungsten in solution and the Cl in the hydrocalumite interlayers played a critical role in tungsten removal. At high initial tungsten concentrations (higher than 5 mmol/L), the removal of W from the solution was solely caused by the precipitation of scheelite (CaWO4), facilitated by the substantial release of Ca2+ from hydrocalumite dissolution. At moderate tungsten concentrations (1-5 mmol/L), however, both mechanisms were responsible for the uptake of tungsten, with scheelite precipitation being more important. Hydrocalumite is promising for wide use in the treatment of high-tungsten natural waters or wastewaters.

In China, PM2.5 pollution has caused extensive death and economic loss. Thus, an accurate assessment of the spatial distribution of these losses is crucial for delineating priority areas for air pollution control in China. In this study, we assessed the PM2.5 exposure-related health effects according to the integrated exposure risk function and non-linear power law (NLP) function in 338 prefecture-level cities in China by utilizing online monitoring data and the PM2.5 Hindcast Database (PHD). Our results revealed no significant difference between the monitoring data and PHD (p value = 0.66 > 0.05). The number of deaths caused by PM2.5-related Stroke (cerebrovascular disease), ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer at the national level estimated through the NLP function was 0.27 million (95% CI: 0.06-0.50), 0.23 million (95% CI: 0.08-0.38), 0.31 million (95% CI: 0.04-0.57), and 0.31 million (95% CI: 0.16-0.40), respectively. The total economic cost at the national level in 2016 was approximately US$80.25 billion (95% CI: 24.46-132.25). Based on a comparison of Z statistics, we propose that the evaluation results obtained using the NLP function and monitoring data are accurate. Additionally, according to scenario simulations, Beijing, Chongqing, Tianjin, and other cities should be priority areas for PM2.5 pollution control to achieve considerable health benefits. Our statistics can help improve the accuracy of PM2.5-related health effect assessments in China.

Arsenic (As) from deep crust is transported by geothermal waters to the earth surface and retained by sediment through adsorption, which depends significantly on the occurring As species. Adsorption of oxyarsenic species (i.e. arsenite [iAs(III)] and arsenate [iAs(V)]) on pure minerals was intensively investigated, yet studies with natural sediments and less known As species are scarce. To fill this gap, we investigated adsorption kinetics of nine different As species onto three typical geothermal sediments with different sedimentary organic matter (SOM) and iron (Fe) levels under anaerobic, sulfidic conditions (pH = 6). A multispecies pseudo-second-order (MPSO) model was applied to extract the adsorption rates of individual As species. Results showed that only the sediment with both high SOM and high Fe exhibited considerable As adsorption capacity. Air exposure or rise of either SOM or Fe levels in sediment favoured de-thiolation of aqueous thioarsenates, except for dimethylated thioarsenates. The overall adsorbed amount of the spiked As was affected by concurrent (de-)thiolation of the initial species, and the rates of their adsorption to the high SOM and high Fe sediment decreased in the order of tetrathioarsenate (TetraTA) > monothioarsenate (MTA) > iAs(V) > monomethyl arsenate (MMA) > dimethyl arsenate (DMA) > iAs(III) > monomethyl monothioarsenate (MMMTA) > dimethyl monothioarsenate (DMMTA) > dimethyl dithioarsenate (DMDTA). The fastest and slowest adsorption were suggested for inorganic thioarsenates and methylated thioarsenates, respectively. Therefore, under typical geothermal scenarios, thiolation of inorganic As would not necessarily increase its mobility, but the formation of methylated oxyarsenates and their further thiolation would endow geothermal As with strong migration ability.

Seven estrogenic compounds--estrone (E1), 17ß-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2), diethylstilbestrol (DES), nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (OP), and bisphenol A (BPA)--in sediments, surface water, pore water, and organisms were investigated and estrogenic activities were estimated by examining estradiol equivalent (EEQ) concentrations in Yundang Lagoon of Xiamen. The results showed that estrogenic compounds were present in all matrixes of interest: in surface water, ranging from 609.61 to 711.31 ng/l; in pore water, ranging from 562.12 to 1038.15 ng/l; in sediments, ranging from 1433.12 to 2060.41 ng/g; and in biota samples, ranging from 1373.76 to 3199.09 ng/g (lipid weight). NP was the predominant component in all collected samples and the highest concentration was 1964.80 ng/g in sediment. Total EEQ ranged from 4.56 to 13.79 ng/l in surface water, from 2.40 to 17.16 ng/l in pore water, and from 8.66 to 23.95 ng/g in sediments. However, major contributors to total EEQ concentrations were E2, E1, and DES. The EEQ concentrations in surface water samples were at a higher level in comparison to that reported in European countries. To biological sample, the highest level of total estrogenic compounds was found in the short-necked clam. Higher values of the biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) were found in short-necked clam and black seabream, indicating that the living habits of organism and physical-chemical properties of estrogenic compounds might influence the bioavailability of estrogenic compounds in organisms.

The explosive growth of algae in inland water bodies is one of the major water environmental problems in China, and it's very important to monitor the dynamic of algae in both temporal and spatial scales. In the present paper, a model, which was used to extract the algae information from the water body of Taihu Lake using MODIS data, was established based on the remote sensing index and image false color composite methods. Using this model, we studied the algae explosive growth formation process between March and May in 2007. Through the analysis of the temporal and spatial distribution features of the algae outbreak between the spring and summer seasons, an early warning method of algal blooms was proposed, that is, when the MODIS green index mainly concentrated in the range between 0. 6 and 0. 8, the water body of Taihu Lake can be considered to have been in the early alarming stage of algal blooms.

Unlike collectively treatable industrial wastewaters where only one or a few pollutants have concentrations much higher than the relevant standards, geothermal waters, in which multiple harmful constituents coexist, are usually discharged dispersedly, provoking a big challenge for their effective treatment. Here, a Mg/Fe layered double hydroxide with OH- intercalated (Mg-Fe-OH-LDH) was synthesized in a mechanochemical way and then applied in the treatment of various types of high-temperature geothermal waters in western Yunnan (China) containing a variety of harmful anions (As, Sb, W, and F) and inducing local environmental pollution. Due to the endothermic nature of removal of aqueous As, Sb, W, and F by Mg-Fe-OH-LDH, the original high temperatures of the geothermal waters could promote their sorption effectively. Batch sorption experiments demonstrated that over 94% and 80% of the As and W removal amounts could be reached within the first 10 and 20 min, respectively. On-site column experiments confirmed that the sorbent could remove the targeted harmful constituents from the investigated geothermal waters efficiently. In fact, the performance of the sorbent in the column studies was even better than that in the batch experiments, which can be ascribed to the continuous impetus for sorption caused by the concentration gradient in the flowing sorption system. Specifically, Mg-Fe-OH-LDH displayed the best sorption performance for As(V) among various harmful constituents, and the sorption of As along with W and F was little affected by the coexisting common anions in the geothermal waters, including Cl-, SO42-, and HCO3-/CO32-. In contrast, the removal of Sb(V) from geothermal waters may be impeded to a certain extent by SO42- and CO32-, which possessed stronger electronegativity or smaller ionic radii. This study is the first attempt to apply Mg-Fe-LDH in treatment of geothermal waters with multiple harmful constituents and sheds a light on providing a practical approach for field treatment of geothermal water-derived pollution.
