RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In children, recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy for treatment of short stature has raised concerns of the early onset of puberty. Puberty is initiated by the activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF1) has been known to mediate physiologic effects of GH. To understand the mechanism of precocious sexual maturation following prepubertal GH therapy, the effects of rhGH on the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis were examined in the immature male rats. METHODS: Immature male rats were given by daily injection of rhGH (1 or 2 IU/kg) from postnatal day (PND) 21 to PND 23 or 30. The effects of rhGH on kisspeptin-GnRH-LH system in the hypothalamus-pituitary axis, systemic and testicular IGF1, spermatogenesis, steroidogenesis, and circulating testosterone levels were examined. The effects of rhGH on the IGF1 expression and steroidogenesis were examined in progenitor LCs in vitro. RESULTS: Testicular steroidogenic pathway and spermatogenesis marker mRNA levels, number and size of 17ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (+) LCs, and blood testosterone levels of rhGH rats were significantly higher than those of controls on PNDs 24 and 31. Hypothalamic Kiss1 and Gnrh1 mRNA of rhGH rats were significantly higher than those of controls on PND 24, indicating early activation of hypothalamic kisspeptin-GnRH neurons by rhGH. Hypothalamic Igf1 mRNA levels of rhGH rats were significantly higher than those of controls on PND 24 but significantly lower than those of controls on PND 31. Testicular Igf1 mRNA levels were significantly higher in rhGH rats than in the controls on PNDs 24 and 31 whereas circulating IGF1 levels were not. In progenitor LCs, rhGH significantly increased Igf1 and steroidogenic pathway mRNA levels and testosterone production. CONCLUSIONS: Local increases in testicular IGF1 might be an important mediator of gonadal maturation via activation of LCs steroidogenesis in immature rats given rhGH.

RESUMEN

A gate stack that facilitates a high-quality interface and tight electrostatic control is crucial for realizing high-performance and low-power field-effect transistors (FETs). However, when constructing conventional metal-oxide-semiconductor structures with two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide channels, achieving these requirements becomes challenging due to inherent difficulties in obtaining high-quality gate dielectrics through native oxidation or film deposition. Here, a gate-dielectric-less device architecture of van der Waals Schottky gated metal-semiconductor FETs (vdW-SG MESFETs) using a molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) channel and surface-oxidized metal gates such as nickel and copper is reported. Benefiting from the strong SG coupling, these MESFETs operate at remarkably low gate voltages, <0.5 V. Notably, they also exhibit Boltzmann-limited switching behavior featured by a subthreshold swing of ≈60 mV dec-1 and negligible hysteresis. These ideal FET characteristics are attributed to the formation of a Fermi-level (EF) pinning-free gate stack at the Schottky-Mott limit. Furthermore, authors experimentally and theoretically confirm that EF depinning can be achieved by suppressing both metal-induced and disorder-induced gap states at the interface between the monolithic-oxide-gapped metal gate and the MoS2 channel. This work paves a new route for designing high-performance and energy-efficient 2D electronics.

RESUMEN

Motivated by regulating/eliminating the population of herbivorous pests, we investigate a discrete-time plant-herbivore model with two different constant control strategies (removal versus reduction), and formulate the corresponding optimal control problems when its dynamics exhibits varied types of bi-stability and fluctuating environments. We provide basic analysis and identify the critical factors to characterize the optimal controls and the corresponding plant-herbivore dynamics such as the control upper bound (the effectiveness level of the implementation of control measures) and the initial conditions of the plant and herbivore. Our results show that optimal control could be easier when the model has simple dynamics such as stable equilibrium dynamics under constant environment or the model exhibits chaotic dynamics under fluctuating environments. Due to bistability, initial conditions are important for optimal controls. Regardless of with or without fluctuating environments, initial conditions taken from the near the boundary makes optimal control easier. In general, the pest is hard to be eliminated when the control upper bound is not large enough. However, as the control upper bound is increased or the initial conditions are chosen from near the boundary of the basin of attractions, the pest can be manageable regardless of the fluctuating environments.

RESUMEN

The formation and invariance of the canine nose pattern is studied. Nose images of ten beagle dogs were collected for ten months from month two to month eleven. The nose patterns in these images are examined visually and by a biometric algorithm. It is found that the canine nose pattern is fully formed at the end of the second month since birth and remains invariant until the end of the eleventh month. This study also strongly indicates that the canine nose pattern can be used as a unique biometric marker for each individual dog.

RESUMEN

The uniqueness of the canine nose pattern was studied. A total of 180 nose images of 60 dogs of diverse age, gender, and breed were collected. The canine nose patterns in these images were examined visually and by a biometric algorithm. It was found that the canine nose pattern remains invariant regardless of when the image is taken; and that the canine nose pattern is indeed unique to each dog. The same study was also performed on an enlarged dataset of 278 nose images of 70 dogs of 19 breeds. The study of the enlarged dataset also leads to the same conclusion. The result of this paper confirms and enhances the claims of earlier works by others that the canine nose pattern is indeed unique to each animal and serves as a unique biometric marker.

RESUMEN

Significant progress has been made in understanding the production, circulation, and absorption of CSF. In part because of autoregulation, rapid changes in arterial pressure produce parallel but significantly dampened changes in CSF pressure. Chronic arterial hypertension rarely affects ICP,but changes in venous pressure are transmitted directly into the CSF, taking precedence over arterial effects. An understanding of basic CSF physiology, particularly in relation to ICP homeostasis, is important for surgeons treating intracranial hypertension, low ICP pressure, and spontaneous, traumatic, or iatrogenic CSF leakages. The principles discussed in this article are valuable to remember when planning surgical procedures in the head and neck, both to prevent and to treat potential complications related to increased or decreased CSF pressure.
