RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Changes in epithelial cell shape reflects optimal cell packing and the minimization of surface free energy, but also cell-cell interactions, cell proliferation, and cytoskeletal rearrangements. RESULTS: Here, we studied the structure of the rat pleura in the first 15 days after birth. After pleural isolation and image segmentation, the analysis demonstrated a progression of epithelial order from postnatal day 1 (P1) to P15. The cells with the largest surface area and greatest shape variability were observed at P1. In contrast, the cells with the smallest surface area and most shape consistency were observed at P15. A comparison of polygonal cell geometries demonstrated progressive optimization with an increase in the number of hexagons (six-sided) as well as five-sided and seven-sided polygons. Analysis of the epithelial organization with Voronoi tessellations and graphlet motif frequencies demonstrated a developmental path strikingly distinct from mathematical and natural reference paths. Graph Theory analysis of cell connectivity demonstrated a progressive decrease in network heterogeneity and clustering coefficient from P1 to P15. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the rat pleura undergoes a striking change in pleural structure from P1 to P15. Further, a geometric and network-based approach can provide a quantitative characterization of these developmental changes.

RESUMEN

In European countries, nearly 10% of all hospital admissions are related to respiratory diseases, mainly chronic life-threatening diseases such as COPD, pulmonary hypertension, IPF or lung cancer. The contribution of blood vessels and angiogenesis to lung regeneration, remodeling and disease progression has been increasingly appreciated. The vascular supply of the lung shows the peculiarity of dual perfusion of the pulmonary circulation (vasa publica), which maintains a functional blood-gas barrier, and the bronchial circulation (vasa privata), which reveals a profiled capacity for angiogenesis (namely intussusceptive and sprouting angiogenesis) and alveolar-vascular remodeling by the recruitment of endothelial precursor cells. The aim of this review is to outline the importance of vascular remodeling and angiogenesis in a variety of non-neoplastic and neoplastic acute and chronic respiratory diseases such as lung infection, COPD, lung fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension and lung cancer.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Intra-ductal cancer (IDC) is the most common type of breast cancer, with intra-lobular cancer (ILC) coming in second. Surgery is the primary treatment for early stage breast cancer. There are now irrefutable data demonstrating that the immune context of breast tumors can influence growth and metastasis. Adjuvant chemotherapy may be administered in patients who are at a high risk of recurrence. Our goal was to identify the processes underlying both types of early local recurrences. METHODS: This was a case-control observational study. Within 2 years of receiving adjuvant taxan and anthracycline-based chemotherapy, as well as modified radical mastectomy (MRM), early stage IDC and ILC recurred. Vimentin, α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP1), and clustered differentiation (CD95) were investigated. RESULTS: Of the samples in the ductal type group, 25 showed local recurrence, and 25 did not. Six individuals in the lobular-type group did not experience recurrence, whereas seven did. Vimentin (p = 0.000 and 0.021), PDGF (p = 0.000 and 0.002), and CD95 (p = 0.000 and 0.045) expressions were significantly different in ductal and lobular carcinoma types, respectively. Measurement of ductal type was the sole significant difference found in MMP1 (p = 0.000) and α-SMA (p = 0.000). α-SMA and CD95 were two variables that helped the recurrence mechanism in the ductal type according to the pathway analysis. In contrast, the CD95 route is a recurrent mechanism for the lobular form. CONCLUSIONS: While the immune system plays a larger role in ILC, the tumor microenvironment and immune system both influence the recurrence of IDC. According to this study, improving the immune system may be a viable cancer treatment option.

RESUMEN

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a physical technology with notable effects on living organisms. In the present study, tomato seeds (Solanum lycopersicum var. Bassimo Mill.) were exposed to CAP for various time intervals, ranging from 1 to 5 min, in both continuous and intermittent periods, and were compared with a control group that received no CAP treatment. Seedlings grown from treated seeds exhibited improvements in levels of growth traits, photosynthetic pigments, and metabolite contents when compared to the control group. Seedlings from seeds treated with S04 displayed significant increases in shoot and root lengths, by 32.45% and 20.60% respectively, compared to the control group. Moreover, seedlings from seeds treated with S01 showed a 101.90% increase in total protein, whereas those treated with S02 experienced a 119.52% increase in carbohydrate content. These findings highlight the substantial improvements in growth characteristics, photosynthetic pigments, and metabolite levels in seedlings from treated seeds relative to controls. Total antioxidant capacity was boosted by CAP exposure. The activities of enzymes including superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidases were stimulated by S02 and exceeded control treatment by (177.48%, 137.41%, and 103.32%), respectively. Additionally, exposure to S04 increased the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants like flavonoids, phenolics, saponins, and tannins over the control group (38.08%, 30.10%, 117.19%, and 94.44%), respectively. Our results indicate that CAP-seed priming is an innovative and cost-effective approach to enhance the growth, bioactive components, and yield of tomato seedlings.

RESUMEN

Water scarcity and soil carbon dioxide elevation in arid regions are considered the most serious factors affecting crop growth and productivity. This study aimed to investigate the impacts of elevated CO2 levels (eCO2 at rates of 700 and 1000 ppm) on agro-physiological attributes to induce drought tolerance in cucumbers by activating the expression of genes related to aquaporin and stress response, which improved the yield of cucumber under two levels of irrigation water conditions [75% and 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc)]. Therefore, two field experiments were conducted in a greenhouse with controlled internal climate conditions, at the Mohamed Naguib sector of the national company for protected agriculture, during the winter seasons of 2021-2022 and 2022-2023. The treatments included eCO2 in soil under normal and partial root zoon drying (PRD, 100% ETc Full irrigations, and 75% ETc). All the applied treatments were organized as a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and each treatment was replicated six times. Untreated plants were designed as control treatment (CO2 concentration was 400 ppm). The results of this study showed that elevating CO2 at 700 and 1000 ppm in soil significantly increased plant growth parameters, photosynthesis measurements, and phytohormones [indole acetic acid (IAA) and gibberellic acid (GA3)], under partial root-zone drying (75% ETc) and full irrigation conditions (100% ETc). Under PRD condition, eCO2 at 700 ppm significantly improved plant height (13.68%), number of shoots (19.88%), Leaf greenness index (SPAD value, 16.60%), root length (24.88%), fresh weight (64.77%) and dry weight (61.25%) of cucumber plant, when compared to untreated plants. The pervious treatment also increased photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance, and intercellular CO2 concentration by 50.65%, 15.30% and 12.18%; respectively, compared to the control treatment. Similar findings were observed in nutrient concentration, carbohydrate content, Proline, total antioxidants in the leaf, and nutrients. In contrast, eCO2 at 700 ppm in the soil reduced the values of transpiration rate (6.33%) and Abscisic acid (ABA, 34.03%) content in cucumber leaves compared to untreated plants under both water levels. Furthermore, the results revealed that the gene transcript levels of the aquaporin-related genes (CsPIP1-2 and CsTIP4) significantly increased compared with a well-watered condition. The transcript levels of CsPIP improved the contribution rate of cell water transportation (intermediated by aquaporin's genes) and root or leaf hydraulic conductivity. The quantitative real-time PCR expression results revealed the upregulation of CsAGO1 stress-response genes in plants exposed to 700 ppm CO2. In conclusion, elevating CO2 at 700 ppm in the soil might be a promising technique to enhance the growth and productivity of cucumber plants in addition to alleviating the adverse effects of drought stresses.

RESUMEN

In the later stages of angiogenesis, the vascular sprout transitions into a functional vessel by fusing with a target vessel. Although this process appears to routinely occur in embryonic tissue, the biologic rules for sprout fusion and lumenization in adult regenerating tissue are unknown. To investigate this process, we grafted portions of the regenerating post-pneumonectomy lung onto the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). Grafts from all 4 lobes of the post-pneumonectomy right lung demonstrated peri-graft angiogenesis as reflected by fluorescent plasma markers; however, fluorescent microsphere perfusion primarily occurred in the lobe of the lung that is the dominant site of post-pneumonectomy angiogenesis-namely, the cardiac lobe. Vascularization of the cardiac lobe grafts was confirmed by active tissue growth (p < .05). Functional vascular connections between the cardiac lobe and the CAM vascular network were demonstrated by confocal fluorescence microscopy as well as corrosion casting and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Bulk transcriptional profiling of the cardiac lobe demonstrated the enhanced expression of many genes relative to alveolar epithelial cell (CD11b-/CD31-) control cells, but only the upregulation of Ereg and Fgf6 compared to the less well-vascularized right upper lobe. The growth of actively regenerating non-neoplastic adult tissue on the CAM demonstrates that functional lumenization can occur between species (mouse and chick) and across the developmental spectrum (adult and embryo).

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive cytoreductive treatment option for brain tumors with a risk of vascular injury from catheter placement or thermal energy. This may be of concern with deep-seated tumors that have surrounding end-artery perforators and critical microvasculature. The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of distal ischemia following LITT for deep-seated perivascular brain tumors. METHODS: A retrospective review of a multi-institution database was used to identify patients who underwent LITT between 2013 and 2022 for tumors located within the insula, thalamus, basal ganglia, and anterior perforated substance. Demographic, clinical and volumetric tumor characteristics were collected. The primary outcome was radiographic evidence of distal ischemia on post-ablation magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). RESULTS: 61 LITT ablations for deep-seated perivascular brain tumors were performed. Of the tumors treated, 24 (39%) were low-grade gliomas, 32 (52%) were high-grade gliomas, and 5 (8%) were metastatic. The principal location included 31 (51%) insular, 14 (23%) thalamic, 13 (21%) basal ganglia, and 3 (5%) anterior perforated substance tumors. The average tumor size was 19.6 cm3 with a mean ablation volume of 11.1 cm3. The median extent of ablation was 92% (IQR 30%, 100%). Two patients developed symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage after LITT. No patient had radiographic evidence of distal ischemia on post-operative diffusion weighted imaging. CONCLUSION: We demonstrate that LITT for deep-seated perivascular brain tumors has minimal ischemic risks and is a feasible cytoreductive treatment option for otherwise difficult to access intracranial tumors.

RESUMEN

This single-center retrospective study investigated subclinical rejection prevalence and significance in simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant (SPKT) recipients. We analyzed 352 SPKT recipients from July 2003 to April 2022. Our protocol included pancreas allograft surveillance biopsies at 1, 4, and 12months post-transplant. After excluding 153 patients unable to undergo pancreas biopsy, our study cohort comprised 199 recipients. Among the 199 patients with protocol pancreas biopsies, 107 had multiple protocol pancreas biopsies in the first year, totaling 323. Subclinical rejection was identified in 132 episodes (41%). Of these, 72% were Grade 1, 20% were indeterminate, and 8% were Banff Grade 2 or higher. All episodes of subclinical rejection were treated. Rates of pancreas graft loss (10% vs. 7%) and clinical rejection (21% vs. 20%) at 3 years were similar between those with and without subclinical rejection. Subclinical rejection Banff Grade 2 or more was associated with poor pancreas graft survival HR of 5.5 (95% CI: 1.24-24.37, p = 0.025). Of 236 simultaneous protocol kidney and pancreas biopsies, 102 (43%) showed pancreas subclinical rejection, while only 17% had concurrent kidney subclinical rejection. Our findings suggest limited predictive value of pancreatic enzymes and euglycemia in detecting pancreas rejection. Furthermore, poor concordance existed between pancreas and kidney subclinical rejection.

RESUMEN

We reported herein the synthesis, characterization of hybrid conjugates composed of phthalimide (Phth) and acridine-1,8-diones (Acr) for optical and medical applications. For the synthetic procedure, a three-step synthetic strategy has been utilized. The optical properties of the examined 1,8-acridinedione-phthalimide connected molecules (AcrPhth 1-5) have been examined utilizing various spectroscopic techniques, e.g., steady-state absorption and fluorescence, and time-correlated single photon counting. The steady-state absorption studies showed that AcrPhth 1-5 absorbs the light in the UV and visible region. The fluorescence studies of AcrPhth 1-5 exhibited significant fluorescence quenching compared to the acridinedione control compounds (Acr 1-5) suggesting the occurrence of electron-transfer reactions from the electron donating acridinedione moiety (Acr) to the electron accepting phthalimide moiety (Phth). The rate and efficiency of the electron-transfer reactions were determined from the fluorescence lifetime measurements indicating the fast electron-transfer processes of the covalently connected AcrPhth 1-5 conjugates. Computational studies supported the intramolecular electron-transfer reaction of AcrPhth conjugates using ab initio B3LYP/6-311G methods. In the optimized structures, the HOMO was found to be entirely located on the Acr entity, while the LUMO was found to be entirely on the Phth entity. Further, the synthesized compounds were tested as photosensitizers for generating the singlet oxygen species, which is a key factor in the photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications. The nanosecond laser flash measurements enable us to detect the triplet-excited states of examined Acr and AcrPhth conjugates, determining the triplet quantum yields, and direct detecting the singlet oxygen in an accurate way. From this observation, the singlet quantum yields were found to be in the range of 0.12-0.27 (for Acr 1-5) and 0.07-0.19 (for AcrPhth 1-5 conjugates). The molecular docking studies revealed that compound AcrPhth 2 exhibited high binding affinity with for key genes (p53, TOP2B, p38, and EGFR) suggesting its potential as a targeted anticancer therapy.

RESUMEN

Herein, we scrutinized the inhibitory potential of five xanthones and a flavonoid, sourced from Centaurium spicatum, against ß-glucuronidase activity. The results showed that gentisin and azaleatin emerged as the most potent inhibitors, with significantly lower IC50 values of 0.96 ± 0.10 and 0.57 ± 0.04 µM, respectively. The evaluation of enzyme kinetics unveiled that the isolated xanthones manifested inhibition of ß-glucuronidase through a mixed inhibition mode, whereas azaleatin exhibited a noncompetitive inhibition mechanism. The findings from molecular docking analysis unveiled that the compounds under investigation, particularly azaleatin, displayed comparatively diminished binding affinities towards ß-glucuronidase. Furthermore, the tested drugs were shown to occupy a common binding site as the employed reference drug. Our comprehensive Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations analysis revealed consistent trajectories for the investigated drugs, wherein azaleatin and gentisin demonstrated notable stabilization of energy levels. Analysis of various MD parameters revealed that drugs with the lowest IC50 values maintained relatively stable interactions with ß-glucuronidase. These drugs were shown to exert notable alterations in their conformation or flexibility upon complexation with the target enzyme. Conversely, the flexibility and accessibility of ß-glucuronidase was reduced upon drug binding, particularly with azaleatin and gentisin, underscoring the stability of the drug-enzyme complexes. Analysis of Coul-SR and LJ-SR interaction energies unveiled consistent and stable interactions between certain isolated drugs and ß-glucuronidase. Azaleatin notably displayed the lowest average Coul-SR interaction energy, suggesting strong electrostatic interactions with the enzyme's active site and significant conformational variability during simulation. Remarkably, LJ-SR interaction energies across different xanthones complexes were more negative than their Coul-SR counterparts, emphasizing the predominant role of van der Waals interactions, encompassing attractive dispersion and repulsive forces, in stabilizing the drug-enzyme complexes rather than electrostatic interactions.

RESUMEN

Multiple optical harmonic generation-the multiplication of photon energy as a result of nonlinear interaction between light and matter-is a key technology in modern electronics and optoelectronics, because it allows the conversion of optical or electronic signals into signals with much higher frequency, and the generation of frequency combs. Owing to the unique electronic band structure of graphene, which features massless Dirac fermions1-3, it has been repeatedly predicted that optical harmonic generation in graphene should be particularly efficient at the technologically important terahertz frequencies4-6. However, these predictions have yet to be confirmed experimentally under technologically relevant operation conditions. Here we report the generation of terahertz harmonics up to the seventh order in single-layer graphene at room temperature and under ambient conditions, driven by terahertz fields of only tens of kilovolts per centimetre, and with field conversion efficiencies in excess of 10-3, 10-4 and 10-5 for the third, fifth and seventh terahertz harmonics, respectively. These conversion efficiencies are remarkably high, given that the electromagnetic interaction occurs in a single atomic layer. The key to such extremely efficient generation of terahertz high harmonics in graphene is the collective thermal response of its background Dirac electrons to the driving terahertz fields. The terahertz harmonics, generated via hot Dirac fermion dynamics, were observed directly in the time domain as electromagnetic field oscillations at these newly synthesized higher frequencies. The effective nonlinear optical coefficients of graphene for the third, fifth and seventh harmonics exceed the respective nonlinear coefficients of typical solids by 7-18 orders of magnitude7-9. Our results provide a direct pathway to highly efficient terahertz frequency synthesis using the present generation of graphene electronics, which operate at much lower fundamental frequencies of only a few hundreds of gigahertz.

RESUMEN

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of amino acid (histidine and L-Tyrosine) on in vitro maturation (IVM), in vitro fertilization (IVF), cleavage (CR) rates, and in vitro embryonic cultivation (IVC; Morula and Blastocyst stage) in buffaloes. Within two hours of buffalo slaughter, the ovaries were collected and transported to the laboratory. Follicles with a diameter of 2 to 8 mm were aspirated to recover the cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs). Histidine (0.5, 1, and 3 mg/ml) or L-Tyrosine (1, 5, and 10 mg/ml) were added to the synthetic oviductal fluid (SOF) and Ferticult media. The IVM, IVF, CR, and IVC (Morula and Blastocyst) rates were evaluated. The results showed that SOF maturation media containing histidine at 0.5 mg/ml significantly (P ≤ 0.01) improved the oocyte maturation when compared to control and other concentrations. The addition of histidine to FertiCult media at 0.5, 1, and 3 mg/ml did not improve the IVM, IVF, CR, or IVC percentages. However, the embryos in the control group were unable to grow into a morula or blastocyst in the SOF or Ferticult, while addition of L-Tyrosine to the SOF or Ferticult at various concentrations improved IVC (morula and blastocyst rates). There was a significant (P ≤ 0.01) increase in IVM when histidine was added to SOF medium at a concentration of 0.5 mg/ml compared with L-Tyrosine. Also, there were significant (P ≤ 0.01) increases in IVC when L-Tyrosine was added to SOF medium at concentrations of 1 and 10 mg/ml compared with histidine. In conclusion, the supplementation of the SOF and FertiCult with the amino acids histidine and L-Tyrosine improve the maturation rate of oocytes and development of in vitro-produced buffalo embryos.

RESUMEN

The study aimed to assess the effects of water salinity on the sperm parameters, levels of cortisol, LH, FSH, testosterone and antioxidants as well as the testes' histopathology in Barki rams. Fifteen healthy Barki rams (1-1.5 years) were divided into three equal depending on the type of drinking water for nine months. The rams in the tap water group (TW, water that contained 350 ppm of total dissolved salts (TDS). Males in the high saline water group (HSW) were permitted to consume high saline water with 8,934 ppm TDS, whereas those in the second group were permitted to have moderately saline water (MSW, 4,557 ppm TDS). High salt concentration in drinking water had adverse effect on sperm viability, morphology and sperm cell concertation. Nitric oxide and malondialdehyde concentrations in blood were significantly higher in the MSW and HSW groups than in TW. There was a significant decrease in glutathione concentration as well as superoxide dismutase activity in TDS and HSW. Cortisol was most highly concentrated in the HSW, next in the MSW, and least in TW. The testosterone, LH, and FSH concentrations in the HSW and MSW groups were significantly lower than in TW. As the salt concentration in drinking water increases, damage to testicular tissue. The MSW group demonstrating vacuolation of lining epithelial cells with pyknotic nuclei in the epididymis and necrosis and desquamation of spermatogenic cells in seminiferous tubules while HSW group displaying desquamated necrotic cells and giant cell formation in the epididymis, as well as damage to some of the seminiferous tubules and showed congestion, vacuolation of spermatogenic epithelium of seminiferous tubules, and desquamated necrotic spermatogenic epithelium. In conclusion, the salinity of the water has detrimental impacts on the sperm morphology, viability and concentration, hormones and antioxidant levels in Barki rams.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Polycythemia is a common medical problem, frequently acquired and reactive to secondary conditions. High-altitude-associated hypoxia contributes to the greater prevalence of polycythemia at altitude. Primary clonal polycythemia vera (PV), even though it is rare, requires a different therapeutic approach. Suspicion of PV usually drives the diagnostic workup of polycythemia. METHODS: In this retrospective lab record study, we collected all JAK2 tests requested over a three-year period. We analyzed requests that were made for the evaluation of polycythemia. Complete blood count (CBC) and imaging of the abdomen were collected. RESULTS: Out of 208 total requests, 136 were for the purpose of polycythemia evaluation. JAK2 mutation was positive (confirming the presence of PV) in 22 (16.7%) cases. PV patients have the usual demographics reported elsewhere. Additionally, PV patients exhibit distinct hemogram results featuring leukocytosis, thrombocytosis, and hypochromic microcytic red blood cells (RBCs) related to the associated iron deficiency. CONCLUSIONS: Many patients with polycythemia at altitude might be unnecessarily considered for an evaluation of PV, if hemoglobin/hematocrit is the sole deciding criterion. PV patients have a distinct CBC pattern that can be exploited to better select patients with polycythemia for further evaluation and thus reduce unnecessary workups.

RESUMEN

Teratomas account for 18-20% of all intracranial germ cell tumors and mostly occur in the pineal region with only a few cases of pediatric sellar and suprasellar teratomas described in the literature. Here, we present a case of a child with an intracranial mature teratoma with pancreatic features causing vasospasm and subsequent stroke, found to be positive for CDKN2A-an independent variant associated with malignancy and small vessel disease leading to stroke.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate differences in sociodemographic characteristics and short-term outcomes between patients undergoing prenatal versus postnatal myelomeningocele repair. METHODS: Patients who underwent myelomeningocele repair at our institution were stratified based on prenatal or postnatal timing of repair. Baseline characteristics and outcomes were compared. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify whether prenatal repair was a predictor of outcomes independent of socioeconomic measures. RESULTS: 49 patients underwent postnatal repair, and 30 underwent prenatal repair. Patients who underwent prenatal repair were more likely to have private insurance (73.3% vs. 42.9%, p = 0.03) and live farther from the hospital where they received their repair (251.5 ± 447.4 vs. 72.5 ± 205.6 miles, p = 0.02). Patients who underwent prenatal repair had shorter hospital stays (14.3 ± 22.7 days vs. 25.3 ± 20.1 days, p = 0.03), fewer complications (13.8% vs. 42.9%, p = 0.01), fewer 30-day ED visits (0.0% vs. 34.0%, p < 0.001), lower CSF diversion rates (13.8% vs. 38.8%, p = 0.02), and better functional status at 3-months (13.3% vs. 57.1% delayed, p = 0.009), 6-months (20.0% vs. 56.7% delayed, p = 0.03), and 1-year (29.4% vs. 70.6% delayed, p = 0.007). On multivariate analysis, prenatal repair was an independent predictor of inpatient complication (OR(95%CI): 0.19(0.05-0.75), p = 0.02) and 3-month (OR(95%CI): 0.14(0.03-0.80) p = 0.03), 6-month (OR(95%CI): 0.12(0.02-0.73), p = 0.02), and 1-year (OR(95%CI): 0.19(0.05-0.80), p = 0.02) functional status. CONCLUSION: Prenatal repair for myelomeningocele is associated with better outcomes and developmental functional status. However, patients receiving prenatal closure are more likely to have private health insurance and live farther from the hospital, suggesting potential barriers to care.

RESUMEN

Residents enter their training with variable comfort and competency in electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation. Accurately interpreting an ECG is a fundamental skill in medicine and resident physicians would benefit from a longitudinal, dedicated ECG curriculum as part of their training to enhance interpretation skills and improve patient outcomes. Educators currently employ a wide array of methodologies to teach their trainees proper ECG interpretation skills, with no single modality established as the gold-standard for teaching this crucial skill. We present evidence-based guidance on how educators may develop and implement an effective ECG interpretation curriculum as part of residency training.

RESUMEN

Gout, or hyperuricemia is a multifactorial and multi-faceted metabolic disease that is quite difficult to manage and/or treat. Conventional therapies such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as allopurinol, corticosteroids and colchicine amongst others, have helped in its management and treatment to some extent. This study aimed to compile and analyze the different herbal remedies used in the management of hyperuricemia and gout. A literature search was conducted from key databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar) using relevant keywords via the PRISMA model. Smilax riparia A.DC. from Traditional Chinese Medicine is used in many countries for its therapeutic effect on lowering serum urate levels. No single study was able to establish the efficacy of a specific traditionally used herb via in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies. Patients were found to use a panoply of natural remedies, mainly plants to treat hyperuricemia and gout, which have been validated to some extent by in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies. Nonetheless, further research is needed to better understand the ethnopharmacological relationship of such herbal remedies.

RESUMEN

The rising application of conventional synthetic insecticides develops resistant populations of houseflies; therefore, using new chemical agents with different modes of action is essential to overcome this problem. The mechanical grinding technique was used as a green method, to synthesize the tested compounds because it is a more facile work-up and high-yield economy, simplicity and solvent-free than conventional thermal technique. Various methods were employed to synthesize new heterocycles containing anthracene (a photosensitizing agent) from chalcone 3, a building block material such as the preparation of the pyrazole derivatives 4-7, isoxazole derivative 8, pyrimidines 9-11, and oxirane derivative 12. The novel synthesized compounds were analyzed by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR spectra, and elemental analysis. Herein, the toxicity of the anthracene derivatives was assessed against Musca domestica larvae and adults in different conditions to demonstrate the effect of various inserted moieties on the efficiency of tested compounds. Furthermore, the influence of sunlight on the toxicity of anthracene was studied in dark and sunlight tests against adult houseflies. Moreover, these compounds diminished the total protein and lipids contents while significantly influencing the antioxidant enzymes activities of M. domestica adults. Structure-activity relationships demonstrated the role of each moiety on the toxicity of compounds.

RESUMEN

To investigate the effect of age in male quail on testicular weight and histology, sexual libido and semen characteristics, a study was performed on 100 quails at 10, 16, 22, 28 and 34 weeks of age. The body and testicular weights were significantly (p < .05) higher at 16 and 22 than at 28 weeks of age. The circumference and diameter of the seminiferous tubules were significantly (p < .05) higher at 28 and 34 than at 10 and 16 weeks of age. Histological evaluation of testicular slices revealed advanced and effective seminiferous tubes as early as 10 weeks, while spermatogenic activity peaked at 16 weeks of age. The highest semen volume, sperm motility and sperm concentration were observed at weeks of age and then decreased gradually with age. At the same time, the testosterone level and libido were significantly (p < .05) higher at 22 than at 10 weeks of age. Furthermore, the age was positive (p < .05), correlated to seminiferous tubule circumference and diameter, and negative (p < .05), correlated to sperm concentration. In conclusion, the age of quail markedly affected the testicular histological structure, libido, testosterone level and semen characteristics.
