RESUMEN

Mesenchymal epithelial transition (MET) protein overexpression is a targetable event in non-small cell lung cancer and is the subject of active drug development. Challenges in identifying patients for these therapies include lack of access to validated testing, such as standardized immunohistochemistry assessment, and consumption of valuable tissue for a single gene/protein assay. Development of prescreening algorithms using routinely available digitized hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained slides to predict MET overexpression could promote testing for those who will benefit most. Recent literature reports a positive correlation between MET protein overexpression and RNA expression. In this work, a large database of matched H&E slides and RNA expression data were leveraged to train a weakly supervised model to predict MET RNA overexpression directly from H&E images. This model was evaluated on an independent holdout test set of 300 overexpressed and 289 normal patients, demonstrating a receiver operating characteristic area under curve of 0.70 (95th percentile interval: 0.66 to 0.74) with stable performance characteristics across different patient clinical variables and robust to synthetic noise on the test set. These results suggest that H&E-based predictive models could be useful to prioritize patients for confirmatory testing of MET protein or MET gene expression status.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to healthcare systems worldwide, including an increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA). Healthcare providers are now required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Additionally, mechanical CPR devices have been introduced to reduce the number of personnel required for resuscitation. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of CPR performed with a mechanical device and the outcomes of manual CPR performed by personnel wearing PPE. METHODS: This multicenter observational study utilized data from the Korean Cardiac Arrest Research Consortium registry. The study population consisted of OHCA patients who underwent CPR in emergency departments (EDs) between March 2020 and June 2021. Patients were divided into two equal propensity score matched groups: mechanical CPR group (n = 421) and PPE-equipped manual CPR group (n = 421). Primary outcomes included survival rates and favorable neurological outcomes at discharge. Total CPR duration in the ED was also assessed. RESULTS: There were no significant between-group differences with respect to survival rate at discharge (mechanical CPR: 7.4% vs PPE-equipped manual CPR: 8.3%) or favorable neurological outcomes (3.3% vs. 3.8%, respectively). However, the mechanical CPR group had a longer duration of CPR in the ED compared to the manual CPR group. CONCLUSION: This study found no significant differences in survival rates and neurological outcomes between mechanical CPR and PPE-equipped manual CPR in the ED setting. However, a longer total CPR duration was observed in the mechanical CPR group. Further research is required to explore the impact of PPE on healthcare providers' performance and fatigue during CPR in the context of the pandemic and beyond.

A cochleate formulation was developed to enhance the oral bioavailability of revaprazan (RVP). Dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) liposome containing dicetyl phosphate (DCP) successfully formed a cochleate after treatment with CaCl2, whereas that containing sodium deoxycholate did not. Cochleate was optimised using a D-optimal mixture design with three independent variables-DMPC (X1, 70.58 mol%), cholesterol (X2, 22.54 mol%), and DCP (X3, 6.88 mol%)-and three response variables: encapsulation efficiency (Y1, 76.92%), released amount of free fatty acid at 2 h (Y2, 39.82%), and released amount of RVP at 6 h (Y3, 73.72%). The desirability function was 0.616, showing an excellent agreement between the predicted and experimental values. The cylindrical morphology of the optimised cochleate was visualised, and laurdan spectroscopy confirmed the dehydrated membrane interface, showing an increased generalised polarisation value (approximately 0.5) over small unilamellar vesicle of RVP (RVP-SUV; approximately 0.1). The optimised cochleate showed greater resistance to pancreatic enzyme than RVP-SUV. RVP was released in a controlled manner, achieving approximately 94% release in 12 h. Following oral administration in rats, the optimised cochleate improved the relative bioavailability of RVP by approximately 274%, 255%, and 172% compared to RVP suspension, a physical mixture of RVP and the cochleate, and RVP-SUV, respectively. Thus, the optimised cochleate formulation might be a good candidate for the practical development of RVP.

Tracking of soil-dwelling insects poses greater challenges compared to aboveground-dwelling animals in terrestrial systems. A metal detector system consisting of a commercially available detector and aluminum tags was developed for detecting dung beetle, Copris ochus Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). First, detection efficacy of the system was evaluated by varying volumes of aluminum tags attached on a plastic model of the insect and also by varying angles. Then, detection efficacy was evaluated by varying depths of aluminum-tagged models under soil in 2 vegetation types. Finally, the effects of tag attachment on C. ochus adults were assessed for survivorship, burrowing depth, and horizontal movement. Generally, an increase in tag volume resulted in greater detection distance in semi-field conditions. Maximum detection distance of aluminum tag increased up to 17 cm below soil surface as the tag size (0.5 × 1.0 cm [width × length]) and thickness (16 layers) were maximized, resulting in a tag weight of 31.4 mg, comprising ca. 9% of average weight of C. ochus adult. Furthermore, the detection efficacy did not vary among angles except for 90°. In the field, metal detectors successfully detected 5 aluminum-tagged models in 20 × 10 m (W × L) arena within 10 min with detection rates ≥85% for up to depth of 10 cm and 45%-60% at depth of 20 cm. Finally, aluminum tagging did not significantly affect survivorship and behaviors of C. ochus. Our study indicates the potential of metal detector system for tracking C. ochus under soil.

Visceral adiposity is known to be related to poor prognosis in patients with cholangiocarcinoma; however, the prognostic significance of the qualitative features of adipose tissue in cholangiocarcinoma has yet to be well defined. This study investigated the prognostic impact of adipose tissue imaging parameters reflecting the quantity and qualitative characteristics of subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral (VAT) adipose tissue on recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) in 94 patients undergoing resection of cholangiocarcinoma. The area, mean computed tomography (CT) attenuation, and mean 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) uptake of SAT and VAT on positron emission tomography (PET)/CT for staging work-up were measured, and the relationship of these adipose tissue imaging parameters with clinicopathological factors and survival was assessed. TNM stage, histologic grade, lymphovascular invasion, and the size of cholangiocarcinoma showed positive correlations with adipose tissue imaging parameters. Multivariate survival analysis demonstrated that the visceral-to-subcutaneous adipose tissue area ratio (VSR) (p = 0.024; hazard ratio, 1.718) and mean FDG uptake of VAT (p = 0.033; hazard ratio, 9.781) were significant predictors for RFS, but all of the adipose tissue imaging parameters failed to show statistical significance for predicting OS. In addition to visceral adiposity, FDG uptake of VAT might be a promising prognostic parameter for predicting RFS in patients with cholangiocarcinoma.

Although KMT2D, also known as MLL2, is known to play an essential role in development, differentiation, and tumor suppression, its role in pancreatic cancer development is not well understood. Here, we discovered a novel signaling axis mediated by KMT2D, which links TGF-ß to the activin A pathway. We found that TGF-ß upregulates a microRNA, miR-147b, which in turn leads to post-transcriptional silencing of KMT2D. Loss of KMT2D induces the expression and secretion of activin A, which activates a noncanonical p38 MAPK-mediated pathway to modulate cancer cell plasticity, promote a mesenchymal phenotype, and enhance tumor invasion and metastasis in mice. We observed a decreased KMT2D expression in human primary and metastatic pancreatic cancer. Furthermore, inhibition or knockdown of activin A reversed the protumoral role of KMT2D loss. These findings support a tumor-suppressive role of KMT2D in pancreatic cancer and identify miR-147b and activin A as novel therapeutic targets.

BACKGROUND: The visualization score of hepatobiliary-phase (HBP) images has been introduced as an image quality index for gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI. It may be associated with hepatic function and could have an implication on the diagnostic accuracy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). PURPOSE: To investigate the association between the visualization score of gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and clinical factors and to evaluate its effect on the diagnostic accuracy for HCC ≤ 3.0 cm. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: A total of 493 focal lesions from 397 patients. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A 5-T or 3.0 -T with pre/postcontrast T1-weighted 3D gradient echo sequence, and T2-weighted fast spin-echo sequence ASSESSMENT: Child-Pugh classification and albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score were assessed. Three readers evaluated the visualization score of each MRI examination (A, no or minimal; B, moderate; and C, severe limitations), and major features (arterial-phase hyperenhancement, washout, enhancing capsule, threshold growth) and ancillary features of each focal lesion. STATISTICAL TESTS: Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to determine significant clinical factors associated with a suboptimal visualization score (B or C). Generalized estimating equations were used to compare the sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing HCC between the two group (visualization score A vs. B or C). A P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Of the 397 MRI examinations, the incidence of suboptimal visualization score was 13%. A suboptimal visualization score was significantly associated with Child-Pugh classification B or C (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 15.2) and ALBI grade 2 or 3 (OR = 4.7). Compared with the visualization score A group, the suboptimal visualization score group showed significantly lower sensitivity (56.8% vs. 75.2%) and less frequent washout in HCC (62.2% vs. 84.0%). DATA CONCLUSION: The visualization score on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI can be an important image quality index and the diagnostic accuracy for HCC ≤ 3.0 cm may not be sufficient in the suboptimal visualization score group. Asymmetric small interfering RNAs (asiRNAs) that mediate RNA interference have been investigated for therapeutic use in various tissues, including skin tissue. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is caused by a combination of genetic factors, resulting in sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which binds to the androgen receptor (AR) to mediate a series of biomolecular changes leading to hair loss. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of a cell-penetrating, AR-targeting asiRNA (cp-asiAR) for AGA treatment, which was designed to silence the AR gene. AGA mouse models were developed by stimulation with DHT, and ex vivo human scalp tissues were also used for analysis. Cp-asiAR-mediated changes in mRNA expression and protein levels of AR were assessed along with the examination of phenotypic improvements in mouse model of AGA. We also assessed downstream signaling associated with AR in primary human dermal papilla (DP) cells. Several cp-asiARs were screened for selecting the optimal sequence of AR using cell lines in vitro. A cholesterol-conjugated, chemically modified cp-asiAR candidate was optimized under passive uptake conditions in vitro. Intradermal cp-asiAR injection efficiently reduced mRNA and protein levels corresponding to AR in mouse models. Moreover, cp-asiAR injection promoted hair growth in mouse models with DHT-induced AGA. In ex vivo human hair follicle culture, the proportion of telogen hair decreased, and the mean hair bulb diameter increased in the cp-asiAR-treated group. In isolated primary human DP cells, AR expression was effectively downregulated by cp-asiAR. Furthermore, cp-asiAR attenuated DHT-mediated increases in interleukin-6, transforming growth factor-ß1, and dickkopf-1 levels. No significant toxicity was observed in DP cells after cp-asiAR treatment. Cp-asiAR treatment showed effective downregulation of AR expression and prevention of DHT-mediated alterations in the hair cycle and hair diameter, indicating its potential as a novel therapeutic option for AGA.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Multiple arterial-phase magnetic resonance imaging (MA-MRI) was introduced to overcome the limitations of gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI, but its clinical impacts on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnosis have not been well assessed. We investigated whether MA-MRI with gadoxetic acid could improve the diagnosis of HCC ≤3.0 cm in comparison with single arterial-phase MRI (SA-MRI). METHODS: This retrospective study included 397 patients from two tertiary institutions who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI (243 patients with 271 lesions in cohort-1 underwent SA-MRI, and 154 patients with 166 lesions in cohort-2 underwent MA-MRI). The patients had 437 hepatic lesions ≤3.0 cm with pathologic confirmation. The arterial-phase image quality and diagnostic performance of SA-MRI and MA-MRI were analysed and compared. To minimize the effects of selection bias because of potential confounding between the two groups, propensity score-matching was additionally performed. RESULTS: MA-MRI showed a significantly higher percentage of optimal arterial-phase timing (94.2% vs. 74.5%, p < .001) and lower incidence of inadequate examinations (1.3% vs. 5.8%, p = .034) than SA-MRI. MA-MRI had a significantly higher non-rim arterial-phase hyperenhancement (APHE) detection rate (94.9% vs. 85.5%, p = .005) and sensitivity for diagnosing HCC (87.4% vs. 70.0%, p < .001) than SA-MRI, but no significant difference in specificity (92.9% vs. 93.1%, p = .966). In 123 pairs of propensity score-matched patients, MA-MRI had significantly higher sensitivity (89.1% vs. 74.5%, p = .006) than SA-MRI with equal specificity (92.3% vs. 92.3%, p > .999). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with SA-MRI, MA-MRI with gadoxetic acid can detect more non-rim APHE and significantly improve sensitivity for diagnosing HCC ≤3.0 cm, without a significant decrease in specificity.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an immediate-release tablet preparation containing rebamipide (RBM) and perform the bioavailability assessment in the healthy human subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Raw RBM powder was characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RBM tablets were manufactured by the wet granulation method, and their dissolution behavior was compared with the reference tablet (Mucosta). A phase I study (n = 47; sequence-randomized, open-label, single-dose, and two-way cross-over design) was designed for oral administration of a test formulation (F4) and Mucosta to healthy human male subjects, and pharmacokinetic parameters including the maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) and area under the curve from 0 to 12 hours (AUC0-12h) were compared. RESULTS: RBM powder had a multimodal size distribution with typical crystallinity, and the needle-like and elongated morphologies of RBM were visualized using SEM. Various tablet formulations (F1 - F6) were successfully manufactured using wet granulation method. F4 formulation was selected based on the dissolution profile most equivalent to that of Mucosta. F4 was stable for 6 months under accelerated and long-term storage conditions. Based on one-way analysis of variance, the AUC0-12h (F(1,92) = 2.40, p = 0.13) and tmax (F(1,92) = 0.04, p = 0.85) were not significantly different; however, the Cmax (F(1,92) = 5.45, p = 0.022) showed significant difference between F4 and reference tablets. CONCLUSION: Despite similar in vitro dissolution profiles, in vivo pharmacokinetic results revealed a partial difference between F4 and reference tablets. Thus, further study on formulation development is still needed.

The remarkable properties of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have resulted in their increased research interest and prompted the use of various strategies to enhance their mechanical properties. In this study, the effects of Mo on the hot compressive deformation behavior of carbon-containing FeMn40Co10Cr10 HEAs in the temperature range of 800-1000°C and strain rate of 0.001-0.1 s-1 was investigated. The microstructural evolutilon and phase structure were characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron backscattered diffraction. The effects of strain, strain rate, and deformation temperature on the thermally activated deformation restoration process of the Fe39.5Mn40Co10Cr10C0.5 and Fe38.3Mn40Co10Cr10C0.5Mo1.7 HEAs during hot compression were represented by the Zener-Hollomon parameter. Dynamic recrystallization was initiated at 800°C with the strain rate of 0.001-0.1 s-1. The precipitation of the M23C6 carbide along the grain boundaries and within the matrix exerted a strong pinning effect on the grain/subgrain boundaries and promoted dynamic recrystallization through the particle-stimulated nucleation of recrystallization. Moreover, the addition of Mo to the Fe39.5Mn40Co10Cr10C0.5 HEA changed the dynamic recrystallization mechanism by reducing the stacking fault energy and enhancing the reverse f c c ↔ h c p phase transformation. The heterogeneous microstructure composed of ultrafine, fine, and larger grains in the Fe38.3Mn40Co10Cr10C0.5Mo1.7 HEA could be obtained by the nucleation of new recrystallized grains at large deformed grain boundaries adjacent to the first necklace structures and shear bands.

The NLRP3 inflammasome is upregulated by various agents, such as nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The NLRP3 inflammasome facilitations the maturation of interleukin (IL)-1ß, a proinflammatory cytokine that is critically involved in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). Although the NLRP3 inflammasome clearly exacerbates AD symptoms such as erythema and pruritus, drugs for AD patients targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome are still lacking. Based on the previous findings that Mentha arvensis essential oil (MAEO) possesses strong anti-inflammatory and anti-AD properties through its inhibition of the ERK/NF-κB signaling pathway, we postulated that MAEO might be capable of modulating the NLRP3 inflammasome in AD. The aim of this research was to investigate whether MAEO affects the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation in murine bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) stimulated with LPS + ATP in vitro and in a murine model displaying AD-like symptoms induced by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) in vivo. We found that MAEO inhibited the expression of NLRP3 and caspase-1, leading to the suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome activation and IL-1ß production in BMDMs stimulated with LPS + ATP. In addition, MAEO exhibited efficacy in ameliorating AD symptoms in a murine model induced by DNCB, as indicated by the reduction in dermatitis score, ear thickness, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), epidermal thickness, and immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. Furthermore, MAEO attenuated the recruitment of NLRP3-expressing macrophages and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in murine dorsal skin lesions induced by DNCB. Overall, we provide evidence for the anti-AD effects of MAEO via inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

RESUMEN

To enhance the oral bioavailability of atorvastatin calcium (ATV), a novel solidified micelle (S-micelle) was developed. Two surfactants, Gelucire 48/16 (G48) and Tween 20 (T20), were employed for micelle formation, and two solid carriers (SC), Florite PS-10 (FLO) and Vivapur 105 (VP105), were selected as solid carriers. The S-micelle was optimized using a Box-Behnken design with three independent variables, including G48:T20 (X1, 1.8:1), SC:G48 + T20 (X2, 0.65:1), and FLO:VP105 (X3, 1.4:0.6), resulting in a droplet size (Y1) of 198.4 nm, dissolution efficiency at 15 min in the pH 1.2 medium (Y2) of 47.6%, Carr's index (Y3) of 16.9, and total quantity (Y4) of 562.5 mg. The optimized S-micelle resulted in good correlation showing percentage prediction values less than 10%. The optimized S-micelle formed a nanosized dispersion in the aqueous phase, with a higher dissolution rate than raw ATV and crushed Lipitor®. The optimized S-micelle improved the relative bioavailability of oral ATV (25 mg equivalent/kg) in rats by approximately 509 and 271% compared to raw ATV and crushed Lipitor®, respectively. In conclusion, the optimized S-micelle possesses great potential for the development of solidified formulations for improved oral absorption of poorly water-soluble drugs.

Cellular senescence is a state of permanent growth arrest that can ultimately contribute to aging. Senescence can be induced by various stressors and is associated with a myriad of cellular functions and phenotypic markers. Alternative splicing is emerging as a critical contributor to senescence and aging. However, it is unclear how the composition and function of the spliceosome are involved in senescence. Here, using replicative and oxidative stress-induced senescence models in primary human fibroblasts, we report a common shift in the expression of 58 spliceosomal genes at the pre-senescence stage, prior to the detection of senescence-associated ß-galactosidase (SA-ß-gal) activity. Spliceosomal perturbation, induced by pharmacologic and genetic inhibition of splicesomal genes, triggered cells to enter senescence, suggesting a key role as a gatekeeper. Association analysis of transcription factors based on the 58 splicesomal genes revealed Sp1 as a key regulator of senescence entry. Indeed, Sp1 depletion suppressed the expression of downstream spliceosomal genes (HNRNPA3, SRSF7, and SRSF4) and effectively induced senescence. These results indicate that spliceosomal gene sets, rather than a single spliceosomal gene, regulate the early transition into senescence prior to SA-ß-gal expression. Furthermore, our study provides a spliceosome signature that may be used as an early senescence marker.

Despite widespread concern about energy imbalance due to tumor and chemotherapy-related side effects, little is known about detailed variations in energy input, metabolic rate, and physical activity. This study explored changes in energy balance components and serum biomarkers of patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing chemotherapy. Our prospective study included 40 patients with hematologic malignancies hospitalized for chemotherapy. We measured energy balance components, physical function, and serum biomarkers at baseline and weekly after chemotherapy for 3 weeks. Significant weight loss, representing negative energy balance, occurred at 2 (p = 0.002) and 3 weeks (p < 0.001) post-chemotherapy. Statistically reduced oral intake was observed at 3 weeks post-chemotherapy (p = 0.040), and resting energy expenditure statistically decreased according to Harris-Benedict equation, but not to Penn State University equation. Physical function according to DEMMI score decreased significantly at 3 weeks post-chemotherapy (p = 0.002). Serum biomarker analysis demonstrated significant changes in albumin, total protein, CXCL13, and GDF15, with exception of leptin. Although conventional serum biomarkers (total protein and albumin) did not reach pathological states despite their statistical differences, subgroup analysis showed CXCL13 in weight loss group and GDF15 in reduced oral intake group were significantly changed. Over half of patients (65.0%, n = 26) suffered from energy imbalance associated with weight loss and reduced oral intake during chemotherapy. Serial laboratory results suggested that novel biomarkers (CXCL13, GDF15) could be correlated with cachexic state and reduced food intake. Monitoring clinical and serum biomarkers associated with energy balance together can help identify needs for nutritional support in patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVES: The multiple arterial-phase (AP) technique was introduced for liver MRI, but it is not really known if multiple AP MRI (MA-MRI) improves image quality and lesion detection rate on gadoxetate disodium-enhanced MRI in comparison with single AP MRI (SA-MRI). We aimed to determine the clinical usefulness of MA-MRI in comparison with SA-MRI. METHODS: Original articles reporting the percentage of adequate AP imaging and the lesion detection rate on gadoxetate disodium-enhanced MA-MRI were identified in PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases. The pooled percentage of adequate AP imaging and lesion detection rate were calculated using random-effects meta-analysis of single proportions. Subgroup analysis was performed to explain causes of study heterogeneity, and publication bias was evaluated using Egger's test. RESULTS: Of 772 articles screened, 22 studies in 12 articles were included: 18 studies (ten MA-MRI and eight SA-MRI) suitably defined the percentage of adequate AP imaging and four (three MA-MRI and one SA-MRI) defined the lesion detection rate. MA-MRI had 16.1% higher pooled percentage of adequate AP imaging than SA-MRI (94.8% vs. 78.7%, p < 0.01). MA-MRI additionally detected 33.2% of lesions than SA-MRI (83.2% vs. 50.0%, p = 0.06). Substantial study heterogeneity was found in MA-MRI, and the definition of adequate AP imaging, lesion characteristics, and reference standards were significant factors affecting study heterogeneity (p ≤ 0.02). Significant publication bias was found in MA-MRI (p < 0.01) but not in SA-MRI studies (p = 0.87). CONCLUSIONS: Gadoxetate disodium-enhanced MA-MRI may be more clinically useful than SA-MRI, but further study is necessary to validate this finding because of study heterogeneity and publication bias. KEY POINTS: • Multiple arterial-phase MRI (MA-MRI) had a 16.1% higher pooled percentage of adequate AP imaging than single arterial-phase MRI (SA-MRI) (94.8% vs. 78.7%, p < 0.01). • MA-MRI additionally detected an extra 33.2% of lesions compared with SA-MRI (83.2% vs. 50.0%, p = 0.06). • Substantial study heterogeneity and significant publication bias were found across MA-MRI studies.

Sicyos angulatus is a serious threat to riverine ecosystem functions and services worldwide. Here, we studied the effect of species identity and diversity on biotic resistance to S. angulatus under two different soil nutrient levels (unfertilized vs. fertilized). Soil nutrient levels showed no significant effect on invasion by S. angulatus in the control treatment, where intervention by native plants was absent. Species identity of native plants and its interaction with soil nutrient levels had a significant effect on biotic resistance to S. angulatus. For instance, Pennisetum alopecuroides and Lespedeza cuneata best resisted invasion in fertilized soil, whereas Lespedeza bicolor and Lactuca indica best resisted invasion in unfertilized soil. In addition, a mixture of four plant species resisted invasion equally as well as the monoculture of a species in unfertilized soil, whereas the mixed treatment resisted invasion much better in fertilized soil compared with unfertilized soil. Structural equation modeling revealed that species identity and diversity as well as fertilizer application significantly influenced biotic resistance to S. angulatus invasion, while soil nutrients did not influence invasion success directly. Based on these results, we strongly suggest sowing seed mixtures of various species after eradicating S. angulatus plants to prevent re-invasion. Overall, these results demonstrate how native plants rely on resource availability to resist colonization by an invasive plant, such as S. angulatus. This information can be used for the development of improved guidelines for plant restoration and invasive species control.

BACKGROUND: End-of-life care decision-making has become important to support dignity and quality of life for patients who are facing death in Korea, along with the enactment of the Life-Sustaining Treatment Act in 2018. However, it seems that the concepts and policies related to the law are not yet familiar to health care providers or the general public. This unfamiliarity can hinder efficient end-of-life care discussions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to propose a valid and reliable tool to explore the level of understanding of concepts and attributes related to end-of-life care decisions. METHODS: This is a mixed-methods study design. A relevant law and literature analysis, expert consultation, cognitive interviews of 10 adults, and cross-sectional survey for psychometric tests using data from 238 clinical nurses were performed to update a tool developed before the life-sustaining treatment Act was enacted in Korea. RESULTS: 29 items of the draft version were polished in terms of literacy, total length, and scoring method via cognitive interviews and finalized into 21 items through psychometric tests and expert consultations. The 21 items conformed to the Rasch unidimensional paramenters. CONCLUSION: A tool to identify the level of understanding of concepts related to end-of-life care decisions was proposed through a rather rigorous process to ensure feasibility and validity/reliability. We recommend the proposed tool to apply to the adult population and nurses for evaluation and educational purposes.

Quinoa is one of the crops well-adapted to high altitude regions that can grow relatively well under drought, humid, and high UV radiation conditions. This study was performed to investigate the effects of gamma-radiation on quinoa. Seeds were treated with various doses of 50 Gy, 100 Gy, 200 Gy, 300 Gy, 400 Gy, 600 Gy, 800 Gy, and 1000 Gy. We investigated germination, as well as plant height, chlorophyll content, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) at 0, 30, 44, 58, and 88 days after transplanting (DAT) and panicle weight at 88 DAT. The plants grown from the seeds treated at radiation doses greater than 200 Gy showed reduced values in most growth and physiological characteristics. The germination rate and germination speed were higher in the 50 Gy-treated seeds than in 0 Gy-treated (control) seeds. Plant height and panicle weight were highest in the plants from 50 Gy-treated seeds. Chlorophyll content was higher in all treated samples than in the controls. NDVI value showed the highest value in 0 Gy controls and plants treated with 50 Gy. The antioxidant activity was also higher in the plants from the seeds treated with 50 Gy and 100 Gy, showing a steady increase as the radiation dose increased even at 200 Gy. The plants from seeds treated with 0 Gy showed higher expression of proteins related to photorespiration and tubulin chains. The plants from seeds treated with 50 Gy induced more stress-responsive proteins.

Nonlinear radars can be utilized to detect electronic devices, which are difficult to detect with conventional radars due to their small radar cross sections (RCS). Since the receiver in a nonlinear radar is designed to only receive harmonic or intermodulated echoes from electronic devices, it is able to separate electronic devices from non-electronic scatters (clutter) by rejecting their echoes at fundamental frequencies. This paper presents a harmonic-based nonlinear radar scheme utilizing frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) signals for the detection of various electronic devices at short range. Using a laboratory experiment setup for FMCW radar at S-band for Tx (C-band for Rx), measurements are carried out to detect electronic devices of various sizes. The results show that the detection of small electronic devices is possible with nonlinear FMCW radar when appropriate system parameters are selected. Furthermore, we also discuss the maximum detectable range estimation for electronic targets using the radar range equation for FMCW nonlinear radar.
