BACKGROUND: Acid suppressing drugs (ASD) are generally used in acute pancreatitis (AP); however, large cohorts are not available to understand their efficiency and safety. Therefore, our aims were to evaluate the association between the administration of ASDs, the outcome of AP, the frequency of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding and GI infection in patients with AP. METHODS: We initiated an international survey and performed retrospective data analysis on AP patients hospitalized between January 2013 and December 2018. RESULTS: Data of 17,422 adult patients with AP were collected from 59 centers of 23 countries. We found that 23.3% of patients received ASDs before and 86.6% during the course of AP. ASDs were prescribed to 57.6% of patients at discharge. ASD administration was associated with more severe AP and higher mortality. GI bleeding was reported in 4.7% of patients, and it was associated with pancreatitis severity, mortality and ASD therapy. Stool culture test was performed in 6.3% of the patients with 28.4% positive results. Clostridium difficile was the cause of GI infection in 60.5% of cases. Among the patients with GI infections, 28.9% received ASDs, whereas 24.1% were without any acid suppression treatment. GI infection was associated with more severe pancreatitis and higher mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Although ASD therapy is widely used, it is unlikely to have beneficial effects either on the outcome of AP or on the prevention of GI bleeding during AP. Therefore, ASD therapy should be substantially decreased in the therapeutic management of AP.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic liver resection offers a safe and feasible option primarily for the excision of hepatic neoplasms. Timely recovery of liver volume is a key factor for improving prognosis and post-operative mortality of patients undergone liver resection. The aim of the present study was to compare liver regeneration after laparoscopic over open partial hepatectomy. METHODS: Wistar rats were subjected to laparoscopic 70% hepatectomy (group LAP-HEP), open 70% hepatectomy (group HEP), sham operation (group Sham) or no intervention (group Control). At various timepoints following operation (1 h-2 weeks), the liver was excised to assess relative liver weight, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels, mitotic activity, tissue expression of Nuclear Factor-κB (NFκB), Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and the histopathologic profile. RESULTS: No differences were seen in relative liver weight between hepatectomy groups. Mitotic index was increased in all operative study groups, being higher in group LAP-HEP than in group HEP. TBARS levels were higher in group LAP-HEP compared to group HEP. NFκB and VCAM-1 tissue expression scores were increased in all operative study groups with VCAM-1 being higher in group HEP, while ICAM-1 was overexpressed only in hepatectomy groups. Mild histopathologic lesions were noted in hepatectomy groups with the histopathologic score being higher in group HEP (24 h). CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic liver resection enhanced hepatocyte mitotic activity which was accompanied by mild oxidative stress and a less pronounced local inflammatory response and tissue injury to that of the open technique.

PURPOSE: Laparoscopic peritoneal lavage (LPL) is feasible in selected patients with pelvic abscess and generalized purulent peritonitis caused by acute diverticulitis. We aimed to compare LPL and laparoscopic sigmoidectomy (LS) in complicated acute diverticulitis. METHODS: This prospective, observational, multicenter study included patients with a pelvic abscess not amenable to conservative management and patients with Hinchey III acute diverticulitis, from 2015 to 2018. Sixty-six patients were enrolled: 28 (42%) underwent LPL and 38 (58%) underwent LS. In LS, patients had a primary anastomosis, with or without ileostomy, or an end colostomy (HA). Major outcomes were mortality, morbidity, failure of source control, reoperation, length of stay, and diverticulitis recurrence. RESULTS: Patient demographics were similar in the two groups. In LPL, ASA score > 2 and Mannheim Peritonitis Index were significantly higher (p = 0.05 and 0.004). In LS, 24 patients (63%) had a PA and 14 (37%) an HA. No death was recorded. Overall, morbidity was 33% in LPL and 18% in LS (p = 0.169). However, failure to achieve source control of the peritoneal infection and the need to return to the operating room were more frequent in LPL (p = 0.002 and p = 0.006). Mean postoperative length of stay was comparable (p = 0.08). Diverticular recurrence was significantly higher in LPL (p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: LPL is related to a higher reoperation rate, more frequent postoperative ongoing sepsis, and higher recurrence rates. Therefore, laparoscopic lavage for perforated diverticulitis carries a high risk of failure in daily practice.

Background and study purpose: Hilar cholangiocarcinoma, also known as Altemeier-Klatskin tumor, is a rare malignancy that arises in the confluence of the hepatic ducts of the porta hepatis. The prognosis is rather poor. Several lesions mimic these tumors and lead to a misdiagnosis, resulting in radical hepatic resections. These lesions are known as Klatskin-mimicking lesions. We present our experience with the diagnosis and treatment of pathological lesions that can mimic a perihilar cholangiocarcinoma and establish an algorithm of treatment Methods: For the current retrospective study, a prospectively established bile-duct tumor database was analyzed by selecting patients with a preoperative diagnosis of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma. Results: In the last 22 years (from January 1, 1996, to December 31, 2017), 73 patients who were referred to our tertiary center with a primary diagnosis of a Klatskin tumor were treated. All patients underwent a thorough evaluation before deciding upon the treatment. However, only 58 cases had a confirmed preoperative diagnosis of hilar cholangiocarcinoma in the final histopathological examination. The final diagnosis in 15 patients differed from the primary cause for referral and the lesions were regarded as Klatskin-mimicking lesions. Conclusions: Clinicians should always highly suspect Klatskin-mimicking lesions when they evaluate a patient for a possible hilar cholangiocarcinoma in order to avoid a misdiagnosis and propose a proper treatment.

RESUMEN

Duodenal injury is an unusual complication of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, mostly caused by direct injury of the duodenum by laparoscopic instruments, either mechanical or thermal. The management is usually surgical, with satisfactory results, as long as the complication is detected early. We report two cases of duodenal perforations during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. One was treated with primary closure of the defect, while the other was managed conservatively with abdominal drainage and food deprivation. Both techniques proved successful in the management of that complication.

Lipomas are benign, usually asymptomatic, tumours and pelvic lipomas are extremely rare. We describe the case of a giant pelvic lipoma causing obstructive uropathy to a 66-year-old morbidly obese female treated in the 4th Surgical Department of the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in General Hospital "G. Papanikolaou" in March 2016. The patient presented with a history of nocturia and frequent daytime urination for 1 year. Her medical history included diffuse lipomatosis. Computer tomography revealed a giant pelvic mass which lead to left side hydronephrosis, hydrouterer and a pear-shaped bladder, with the differential diagnosis including pelvic lipoma or liposarcoma. An ultrasound guided biopsy excluded the diagnosis of liposarcoma. The patient was submitted to laparoscopic resection of the pelvic lipoma, with complete remission of urinary symptoms. The key-point is to consider the possibility that the pelvic mass is a well-differentiated liposarcoma and to manage it adequately and thus, we recommend intact excision of the mass through a wound protector, and extreme caution to avoid any rupture of the capsule.

PURPOSE: To present our experience in the treatment of patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer. METHODS: The surgical and histopathological records of our department dating from 1st January 1997 to 31 December 2016 were examined, searching for patients who have undergone surgical treatment of colorectal liver metastasis. RESULTS: A total of 90 patients with colorectal liver metastases were treated in the last 20 years in our department. Their mean age was 65.28 years and 54 (60%) were male. The primary tumor was in the colon in 71 patients (78.9%) and in 19 (21.1%) patients in the rectum. Thirty-six (40%) patients presented with synchronous metastatic liver disease, from which 27 were subjected to simultaneous resection, 2 underwent a liver-first approach and 7 were subjected to resection of primary tumor first. Regarding the number of metastases 67 (74.4%) patients had single metastasis, 12 (13.3%) had 2 lesions, 4 (4.4%) had 3 lesions and 7 (7.8%) had 4-8 lesions. In-hospital and 30-day mortality was 3.85%. Median survival was 41 months. CONCLUSION: Surgical resection is the treatment of choice for the management of liver metastasis from colorectal cancer and can be safely performed. Follow up of patients with colorectal cancer is imperative as metachronous metastasis presents in a significant percentage of patients with negative locoregional lymph nodes of the primary tumor. The order of resection doesn't seem to alter outcome in synchronous metastasis. Recurrence is common and re-resection if feasible is the only chance of cure.

In order to investigate the effect of moxifloxacin on survival, lipid peroxidation and inflammation in immunosuppressed rats with soft tissue infection caused by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, 144 white male Wistar rats were randomized into six groups: Groups A and B received saline or moxifloxacin once per day, respectively; Groups C and D received saline or moxifloxacin twice per day, respectively, and Groups E and F received saline or moxifloxacin three times per day, respectively. Blood samples were taken at 6 and 30 hr after administration of S. maltophilia. Malonodialdehyde (MDA), WBC counts, bacterial tissue overgrowth, serum concentrations of moxifloxacin and survival were assessed. Survival analysis proved that treatment with moxifloxacin every 8 hr was accompanied by longer survival than occurred in any other group. Tissue cultures 30 hr after bacterial challenge showed considerably less bacterial overgrowth in the spleens and lungs of moxifloxacin-treated than in salinetreated animals, but not in their livers. At 6 hr there were no statistically significant differences between groups. However, at 30 hr, MDA concentrations were significantly greater (P = 0.044) and WBC counts significantly lower (P = 0.026) in group D than in group C. No statistically significant variations were observed between the other groups. Moxifloxacin possibly stimulates lipid peroxidation and enhances phagocytosis, as indicated by MDA production and survival prolongation, without being toxic, as indicated by WBC count. Therefore, under the appropriate conditions, moxifloxacin has a place in treatment of infections in immunosuppressed patients and of infections caused by S. maltophilia.

The superficial peroneal nerve presents great anatomic variability regarding its emergence from the crural fascia, course, branching pattern, and distribution area. Entrapment neuropathy of the superficial peroneal nerve has been documented in the published data, resulting in pain and paresthesia over the dorsum of the foot. We report a case of a female cadaver in which an accessory superficial peroneal sensory nerve was encountered. The nerve originated from the main superficial peroneal nerve trunk, proximal to the superficial peroneal nerve emergence from the crural fascia, and followed a subfascial course. After fascial penetration, the supernumerary nerve was distributed to the skin of the proximal dorsum of the foot and lateral malleolar area. A potential entrapment site of the nerve was observed at the lateral malleolar area, because the accessory nerve traveled through a fascial tunnel while perforating the crural fascia, and presented with distinct post-stenotic enlargement at its exit point. The likely presence of such a very rare variant and its potential entrapment is essential for the physician and surgeon to establish a correct diagnosis and avoid complications during procedures to the foot and ankle region.

The jugular venous system constitutes the primary venous drainage of the head and neck. It includes a profundus or subfascial venous system, formed by the two internal jugular veins, and a superficial or subcutaneous one, formed by the two anterior and two external jugular veins. We report one case of unilateral anatomical variations of the external and anterior jugular veins. Particularly, on the right side, three external jugular veins co-existed with two anterior jugular veins. Such a combination of venous anomalies is extremely rare. The awareness of the variability of these veins is essential to anesthesiologists and radiologists, since the external jugular vein constitutes a common route for catheterization. Their knowledge is also important to surgeons performing head and neck surgery.

BACKGROUND: Anastomotic leaks remain one of the most dreaded complications in gastrointestinal surgery causing significant morbidity, that negatively affect the patients' quality of life. Experimental studies play an important role in understanding the pathophysiological background of anastomotic healing and there are still many fields that require further investigation. Knowledge drawn from these studies can lead to interventions or techniques that can reduce the risk of anastomotic leak in patients with high-risk features. Despite the advances in experimental protocols and techniques, designing a high-quality study is still challenging for the investigators as there is a plethora of different models used. AIM: To review current state of the art for experimental protocols in high-risk anastomosis in rats. METHODS: This systematic review was performed according to The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. To identify eligible studies, a comprehensive literature search was performed in the electronic databases PubMed (MEDLINE) and Scopus, covering the period from conception until 18 October 2023. RESULTS: From our search strategy 102 studies were included and were categorized based on the mechanism used to create a high-risk anastomosis. Methods of assessing anastomotic healing were extracted and were individually appraised. CONCLUSION: Anastomotic healing studies have evolved over the last decades, but the findings are yet to be translated into human studies. There is a need for high-quality, well-designed studies that will help to the better understanding of the pathophysiology of anastomotic healing and the effects of various interventions.

Background: Intraoperative biliary anatomy recognition is crucial for safety during laparoscopic cholecystectomy, since iatrogenic bile duct injuries represent a fatal complication, occurring in up to 0.9% of patients. Indocyanine green fluorescence cholangiography (ICG-FC) is a safe and cost-effective procedure for achieving a critical view of safety and recognizing early biliary injuries. The aim of this study is to compare the perioperative outcomes, usefulness and safety of standard intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) with ICG-FC with intravenous ICG. Methods: Between 1 June 2021 and 31 December 2022, 160 patients undergoing elective LC were randomized into two equal groups: Group A (standard IOC) and group B (ICG-FC with intravenous ICG). Results: No significant difference was found between the two groups regarding demographics, surgery indication or surgery duration. No significant difference was found regarding the visualization of critical biliary structures. However, the surgeon satisfaction and cholangiography duration presented significant differences in favor of ICG-FC. Regarding the inflammatory response, a significant difference between the two groups was found only in postoperative WBC levels. Hepatic and renal function test results were not significantly different between the two groups on the first postoperative day, except for direct bilirubin. No statistically significant difference was noted regarding 30-day postoperative complications, while none of the complications noted included bile duct injury events. Conclusions: ICG-FC presents equivalent results to IOC regarding extrahepatic biliary visualization and postoperative complications. However, more studies need to be performed in order to standardize the optimal dose, timing and mode of administration.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) remains one of the most commonly performed procedures in adult and paediatric populations. Despite the advances made in intraoperative biliary anatomy recognition, iatrogenic bile duct injuries during LC represent a fatal complication and consist an economic burden for healthcare systems. A series of methods have been proposed to prevent bile duct injury, among them the use of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence. The most commonly reported method of ICG injection is the intravenous administration, while literature is lacking studies investigating the direct intragallbladder ICG injection. This narrative mini-review aims to assess the potential applications, usefulness, and limitations of intragallbladder ICG fluorescence in LC. Authors screened the available international literature to identify the reports of intragallbladder ICG fluorescence imaging in minimally invasive cholecystectomy, as well as special issues regarding its use. Literature search retrieved four prospective cohort studies, three case-control studies, and one case report. In the three case-control studies selected, intragallbladder near-infrared cholangiography (NIRC) was compared with standard LC under white light, with intravenous administration of ICG for NIRC and with standard intraoperative cholangiography (IOC). In total, 133 patients reported in the literature have been administered intragallbladder ICG administration for biliary mapping during LC. Literature includes several reports of intragallbladder ICG administration, but a standardized technique has not been established yet. Published data suggest that NIRC with intragallbladder ICG injection is a promising method to achieve biliary mapping, overwhelming limitations of IOC including intervention and radiation exposure, as well as the high hepatic parenchyma signal and time interval needed in intravenous ICG fluorescence. Evidence-based guidelines on the role of intragallbladder ICG fluorescence in LC require the assessment of further studies and multicenter data collection into large registries.

BACKGROUND: Despite consensus supporting enhanced recovery programs, their full implementation in such a context is difficult due to conventional practices within various groups of professionals. The goal of the EUropean PErioperative MEdical Networking (EUPEMEN) project was to bring together the expertise and experience of national clinical professionals who have previously helped deliver major change programs in their countries and to use them to spread enhanced recovery after surgery protocols (ERAS) in Europe. The specific aim of this study is to present and discuss the key points of the proposed recommendations for colorectal surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five partners from university hospitals in four European countries developed the project as partners. Following a non-systematic review of the literature, the European consensus panel generated a list of recommendations for perioperative care in colorectal surgery. A list of recommendations was formulated and distributed to collaborators at each center to allow modifications or additional statements. These recommendations were then discussed in three consecutive meetings to share uniform ERAS protocols to be disseminated. RESULT: The working group developed (1) the EUPEMEN online platform to offer, free of charge, evidence-based standardized perioperative care protocols, learning activities, and assistance to health professionals interested in enhancing the recovery of their patients; (2) the preparation of the EUPEMEN Multimodal Rehabilitation manuals; (3) the training of the trainers to teach future teachers; and (4) the dissemination of the results in five multiplier events, one for each partner, to promote and disseminate the protocols. CONCLUSION: The EUPEMEN project allowed the sharing of the expertise of many professionals from four different European countries with the objective of training the new generations in the dissemination of ERAS protocols in daily clinical practice through a new learning system. This project was proposed as an additional training tool for all the enhanced recovery program teams.

Ventral incisional hernias are common indications for elective repair and frequently complicated by recurrence. Surgical meshes, which may be synthetic, bio-synthetic, or biological, decrease recurrence and, resultingly, their use has become standard. While most patients are greatly benefited, mesh represents a permanently implanted foreign body. Mesh may be implanted within the intra-peritoneal, preperitoneal, retrorectus, inlay, or onlay anatomic positions. Meshes may be associated with complications that may be early or late and range from minor to severe. Long-term complications with intra-peritoneal synthetic mesh (IPSM) in apposition to the viscera are particularly at risk for adhesions and potential enteric fistula formation. The overall rate of such complications is difficult to appreciate due to poor long-term follow-up data, although it behooves surgeons to understand these risks as they are the ones who implant these devices. All surgeons need to be aware that meshes are commercial devices that are delivered into their operating room without scientific evidence of efficacy or even safety due to the unique regulatory practices that distinguish medical devices from medications. Thus, surgeons must continue to advocate for more stringent oversight and improved scientific evaluation to serve our patients properly and protect the patient-surgeon relationship as the only rationale long-term strategy to avoid ongoing complications.

The gastrointestinal tract has a major role in digestion and absorption of nutrients while playing a leading role in defense of the body. It forms a shield against the invasion of various microorganisms or their products (e.g. antigens, toxins) and therefore it is important to establish its integrity and functionality. That depends on the route of administration and the composition of the artificial nutrition. This study concentrates on the influences of different kinds of artificial nutrition in the functionality of the intestinal mucosal barriers. It seems that full macromolecular solutions of enteral nutrition ensure an adequate mucous immune response, while a lack of nutritional stimulus in the lumen leads rapidly to a dysfunction of gastric-associated lymphatic tissue and mucosal immune system. This dysfunction renders the patients susceptible to infections in distant organs, hospital pneumonia, and multiorgan failure of non-infectious etiology. In patients with indication of total parenteral nutrition administration, addition of bombesin or glutamine preserves mucosal immune response and may limit the adverse effects.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal operations may lead to post-operative bowel dysfunction, while administration of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics may limit its manifestation. Τhe study aimed to assess the efficacy of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics in patients who undergone abdominal operation, in terms of bowel function post-operatively. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Central), Embase, US Registry of clinical trials, and sources of grey literature were searched. The relative effect sizes were estimated, and we obtained the relative ranking of the interventions using cumulative ranking curves. RESULTS: In total, 30 studies were included in the analysis. For the outcome of post-operative ileus, probiotics was superior to placebo/no intervention (relative risk, RR: 0.38; 95%CI: 0.14-0.98) with the highest SUCRA (surface under the cumulative ranking) value (92.1%). For time to first flatus, probiotics (MD: -0.47; 95%CI: -0.78 to -0.17) and synbiotics (MD: -0.53; 95%CI: -0.96 to -0.09) were superior to placebo/no intervention. For time to first defecation and for post-operative abdominal distension probiotics were superior to placebo/no intervention. For post-operative hospitalization days, synbiotics were superior to placebo/no intervention (MD: -3.07; 95%CI: -4.80 to -1.34). CONCLUSIONS: Administration of probiotics in patients who had undergone abdominal surgery reduced the prevalence of post-operative ileus, time to first flatus, time to first defecation, and prevalence of post-operative abdominal distension. Synbiotics reduce time to first flatus and post-operative hospitalization days.

Open and laparoscopic colorectal surgeries, while essential in the management of various colorectal pathologies, are associated with significant postoperative pain. Effective perioperative pain management strategies remain an anesthesiologic challenge. The erector spinae plane block (ESPB), a novel peripheral nerve block, has gained attention for its potential in providing analgesia for a wide variety of surgeries. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of continuous, bilateral ultrasound-guided ESPB in perioperative pain management of patients undergoing colectomy. This prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind trial included 40 adult patients scheduled for elective open or laparoscopic colectomy. Patients undergoing open colectomy as well as patients undergoing laparoscopic colectomy were randomly allocated into two groups: the ESPB group (n = 20) and the control group (n = 20). All patients received preoperatively ultrasound-guided, bilateral ESPB with placement of catheters for continuous infusion. Patients in the ESPB group received 0.375% ropivacaine, while patients in the control group received sham blocks. All patients received standardized general anesthesia and multimodal postoperative analgesia. Pain scores, perioperative opioid consumption, and perioperative outcomes were assessed. Patients in the ESPB group required significantly less intraoperative (p < 0.001 for open colectomies, p = 0.002 for laparoscopic colectomies) and postoperative opioids (p < 0.001 for open colectomies, p = 0.002 for laparoscopic colectomies) and had higher quality of recovery scores on the third postoperative day (p = 0.002 for open and laparoscopic colectomies). Patients in the ESPB group did not exhibit lower postoperative pain scores compared to those in the control group (p > 0.05 at various time points), while patients in both groups reported comparable satisfaction scores with their perioperative pain management (p = 0.061 for open colectomies, and p = 0.078 in laparoscopic colectomies). No complications were reported. ESPB is a novel and effective strategy in reducing perioperative opioid consumption in patients undergoing colectomy. This technique, as part of a multimodal analgesic plan and enhanced recovery after surgery protocols, can be proven valuable in improving the comfort and satisfaction of patients undergoing colorectal surgery.

Introduction: Actinomycosis is an uncommon subacute or chronic suppurative bacterial granulomatous infectious disease with clinical heterogeneity. The majority of actinomycosis cases were of extra-abdominal origin, with oro-cervico-facial cases representing 55%, abdominopelvic representing 20%, and thoracic representing 15% of total reports. Currently, abdominal actinomycosis incidence is approximately 1 case per 119,000 people, being found three times more frequently among males. We report two rare clinical presentations of abdominal actinomycosis affecting the mesentery and the retroperitoneum, respectively. Case Report 1: A 58-year-old Caucasian male presented to our clinic with abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant. Pre-operative evaluation, although inconclusive, showed a mesocolic mass infiltrating the right and transverse colon. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy. After partial resection of the mass, the histopathology report demonstrated mesenteric actinomycosis. Case Report 2: A 40-year-old Caucasian male presented to our clinic complaining about a mucopurulent material from an orifice at the right inguinal region. After appropriate work-up, a large abdominopelvic, stellate mass (75 x 22.8 mm) in the retroperitoneum was revealed. Surgery along with the appropriate antibiotics was used to treat the patient. Conclusion: Preoperative suspicion and diagnosis of actinomycosis are very challenging, with a high rate of misdiagnosis often resulting in delayed treatment. Our case reports highlight that abdominal actinomycosis should always be part of differential diagnosis, especially when there is involvement of multiple organs. The gold standard treatment of actinomycosis is surgical excision with prolonged antibiotic treatment.

Wound healing is a complex and meticulously orchestrated process involving multiple phases and cellular interactions. This narrative review explores the intricate mechanisms behind wound healing, emphasizing the significance of cellular processes and molecular factors. The phases of wound healing are discussed, focusing on the roles of immune cells, growth factors, and extracellular matrix components. Cellular shape alterations driven by cytoskeletal modulation and the influence of the 'Formin' protein family are highlighted for their impact on wound healing processes. This review delves into the use of absorbable meshes in wound repair, discussing their categories and applications in different surgical scenarios. Interleukins (IL-2 and IL-6), CD31, CD34, platelet rich plasma (PRP), and adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) are discussed in their respective roles in wound healing. The interactions between these factors and their potential synergies with absorbable meshes are explored, shedding light on how these combinations might enhance the healing process. Recent advances and challenges in the field are also presented, including insights into mesh integration, biocompatibility, infection prevention, and postoperative complications. This review underscores the importance of patient-specific factors and surgical techniques in optimizing mesh placement and healing outcomes. As wound healing remains a dynamic field, this narrative review provides a comprehensive overview of the current understanding and potential avenues for future research and clinical applications.
