BACKGROUND: Despite previous concerns about ocular side effects related to amiodarone, the relationship between amiodarone and cataract remains uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the potential association between amiodarone use and the subsequent risk of cataract, taking into account potential confounders. METHODS: This population-based, active comparator-controlled cohort study utilized the data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance program and involved adults over 40 years old between 2001 and 2013. We analyzed 12 055 new amiodarone users and contrasted them with a propafenone user cohort. The primary outcome was the incidence of cataract. Inverse-probability treatment-weighting (IPTW) was further used to eliminate the potential confounding effects, and Cox proportional-hazard regression analyses were performed to calculate the risk of cataract. Serial subgroup analyses were also performed. RESULTS: In the main analysis, amiodarone users did not exhibit a significant causal relationship in both full cohort [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 0.994, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.913-1.082] and IPTW cohort (IPTW-aHR 0.977, 95% CI: 0.900-1.060). Furthermore, it is important to highlight a significantly reduced risk of cataract among patients with heart failure (IPTW-aHR 0.708, 95% CI: 0.554-0.905) and during the 2-year follow-up period (IPTW-aHR 0.889, 95% CI: 0.794-0.996), implying potential advantages linked to the use of amiodarone. CONCLUSIONS: The study found no increased risk of cataract with amiodarone, one of the most frequently used antiarrhythmic medications, compared to the use of propafenone. Future research is recommended to explore potential mechanisms and their implications for clinical practice.

We investigated the hemodynamic parameters of pediatric PDA patients and focused on the influence of PDA size on pulmonary arterial pressure and the prevalence of pulmonary hypertension. A total of 52 patients aged between 2 months and 20 years who received transcatheter closure of a PDA from January 2018 to June 2022 in our institution were retrospectively recruited. Their hemodynamic parameters collected both by echocardiography and by cardiac catheterization were analyzed to delineate the influence of PDA size on the pulmonary vascular system. The echocardiographic-based ductal size and indexed PDA size were 1.93 mm (1.15-6 mm) and 4.05 mm/m2 (2.03-25.47 mm/m2), respectively. The pulmonary artery pressure measured was 20.83 mmHg (8-45 mmHg). We found a positive correlation between indexed PDA size and mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.47, p < 0.001). A subgroup analysis showed that 28 patients (53.8%) developed pulmonary hypertension (PH) (defined as mPAP > 20 mmHg). The median age of the PH group was 1.02 years [range: 0.19-8.64], which was significantly younger than the non-PH group's median age of 3.43 years [range: 0.42-19.96] (p = 0.001). The indexed PDA size for the PH group, 4.69 mm/m2, was significantly higher than that of the non-PH group, 3.2 mm/m2 (p = 0.004). The major risk factor for patients with PH was the PDA/BSA index, with an OR of 2.181 (95% CI, 1.224-3.887). Our demographic data showed younger patients with a higher PDA/BSA index are more likely to develop pulmonary hypertension.

Brown planthopper (BPH), a monophagous phloem feeder, consumes a large amount of photoassimilates in rice and causes wilting. A near-isogenic line 'TNG71-Bph45' was developed from the Oryza sativa japonica variety 'Tainung 71 (TNG71) carrying a dominant BPH-resistance locus derived from Oryza nivara (IRGC 102165) near the centromere of chromosome 4. We compared the NIL (TNG71-Bph45) and the recurrent parent to explore how the Bph45 gene confers BPH resistance. We found that TNG71-Bph45 is less attractive to BPH at least partially because it produces less limonene. Chiral analysis revealed that the major form of limonene in both rice lines was the L-form. However, both L- and D-limonene attracted BPH when applied exogenously to TNG71-Bph45 rice. The transcript amounts of limonene synthase were significantly higher in TNG71 than in TNG71-Bph45 and were induced by BPH infestation only in the former. Introgression of the Bph45 gene into another japonica variety, Tainan 11, also resulted in a low limonene content. Moreover, several dominantly acting BPH resistance genes introduced into the BPH-sensitive IR24 line compromised its limonene-producing ability and concurrently decreased its attractiveness to BPH. These observations suggest that reducing limonene production may be a common resistance strategy against BPH in rice.

Myoblast fusion is required for myotube formation during myogenesis, and defects in myoblast differentiation and fusion have been implicated in a number of diseases, including human rhabdomyosarcoma. Although transcriptional regulation of the myogenic program has been studied extensively, the mechanisms controlling myoblast fusion remain largely unknown. This study identified and characterized the dynamics of a distinct class of blebs, termed bubbling blebs, which are smaller than those that participate in migration. The formation of these bubbling blebs occurred during differentiation and decreased alongside a decline in phosphatidylinositol-(3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP3) at the plasma membrane before myoblast fusion. In a human rhabdomyosarcoma-derived (RD) cell line that exhibits strong blebbing dynamics and myoblast fusion defects, PIP3 was constitutively abundant on the membrane during myogenesis. Targeting phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) to the plasma membrane reduced PIP3 levels, inhibited bubbling blebs and rescued myoblast fusion defects in RD cells. These findings highlight the differential distribution and crucial role of PIP3 during myoblast fusion and reveal a novel mechanism underlying myogenesis defects in human rhabdomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: The pollen ornate surface of flowering plants has long fascinated and puzzled evolutionary biologists for their variety. Each pollen grain is contained within a pollen wall consisting of intine and exine, over which the lipoid pollen coat lies. The cytology and molecular biology of the development of the intine and exine components of the pollen wall are relatively well characterised. However, little is known about the pollen coat, which confers species specificity. We demonstrate three types of pollen coat in Zingiberaceae, a mucilage-like pollen coat and a gum-like pollen coat, along with a pollen coat more typical of angiosperms. The morphological differences between the three types of pollen coat and the related molecular mechanisms of their formation were studied using an integrative approach of cytology, RNA-seq and positive selection analysis. RESULTS: Contrary to the 'typical' pollen coat, in ginger species with a mucilage-like (Caulokaempferia coenobialis, Cco) or gum-like (Hornstedtia hainanensis, Hhn) pollen coat, anther locular fluid was still present at the bicellular pollen (BCP) stage of development. Nevertheless, there were marked differences between these species: there were much lower levels of anther locular fluid in Hhn at the BCP stage and it contained less polysaccharide, but more lipid, than the locular fluid of Cco. The set of specific highly-expressed (SHE) genes in Cco was enriched in the 'polysaccharide metabolic process' annotation term, while 'fatty acid degradation' and 'metabolism of terpenoids and polyketides' were significantly enriched in SHE-Hhn. CONCLUSIONS: Our cytological and comparative transcriptome analysis showed that different types of pollen coat depend on the residual amount and composition of anther locular fluid at the BCP stage. The genes involved in 'polysaccharide metabolism' and 'transport' in the development of a mucilage-like pollen coat and in 'lipid metabolism' and 'transport' in the development of a gum-like pollen coat probably evolved under positive selection in both cases. We suggest that the shift from a typical pollen coat to a gum-like or mucilage-like pollen coat in flowering plants is an adaptation to habitats with high humidity and scarcity of pollinators.

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an autoimmune disease affecting mainly spine and sacroiliac joints and adjacent soft tissues. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) are used to evaluate genetic associations and to predict genetic risk factors that determine the biological basis of disease susceptibility. We aimed to explore the race-specific SNP susceptibility of AS in Taiwanese individuals and to investigate the association between HLA-B27 and AS susceptibility SNPs in Taiwan. METHODS: Genotyping data were collected from a medical center participating in the Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative (TPMI) in the northern district of Taiwan. We designed a case-control study to identify AS susceptibility SNPs through GWAS. We searched the genome browser to find the corresponding susceptibility genes and used the GTEx database to confirm the regulation of gene expression. A polygenic risk score approach was also applied to evaluate the genetic variants in the prediction of developing AS. RESULTS: The results showed that the SNPs located on the sixth chromosome were related to higher susceptibility in the AS group. There was no overlap between our results and the susceptibility SNPs found in other races. The 12 tag SNPs located in the MHC region that were found through the linkage disequilibrium method had higher gene expression. Furthermore, Taiwanese people with HLA-B27 positivity had a higher proportion of minor alleles. This might be the reason that the AS prevalence is higher in Taiwan than in other countries. We developed AS polygenic risk score models with six different methods in which those with the top 10% polygenic risk had a fivefold increased risk of developing AS compared to the remaining group with low risk. CONCLUSION: A total of 147 SNPs in the Taiwanese population were found to be statistically significantly associated with AS on the sixth pair of chromosomes and did not overlap with previously published sites in the GWAS Catalog. Whether those genes mapped by AS-associated SNPs are involved in AS and what the pathogenic mechanism of the mapped genes is remain to be further studied.

Caffeine is one of the most widely used psychostimulants in the world and possesses central excitative, anti-depressive, and neuroprotective properties. However, excessive ingestion or abuse of caffeine can lead to intoxication. Many toxic effects are attributed to oxidative damage, and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a critical intracellular regulator of the oxidative stress response. Here, we investigated the neurotoxicity of caffeine in rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells and zebrafish larvae. It was found that caffeine inhibited the viability of PC12 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Furthermore, it induced PC12 cell apoptosis and elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and western blotting revealed that caffeine also inhibited the expression levels of Nrf2 mRNA and protein and its target genes (e.g., NADPH quinone oxidoreductase 1 [NQO1]). Furthermore, Nrf2 silencing attenuated the toxic effects of caffeine. In addition, zebrafish larvae were treated with different doses of caffeine. Behavioral experiments showed that a low dose of caffeine (0.05 to 0.3 mM) increased the average distance of movement and promoted excitation. Survivorship curves showed that caffeine (0.2 to 1.5 mM) caused lethality. Finally, qPCR revealed that a higher dose of caffeine inhibited mRNA levels in the Nrf2 pathway. Based on these results, this study identified for the first time that overuse of caffeine can induce neurotoxicity by inhibiting the Nrf2 pathway. These results will provide a new perspective for studies on caffeine toxicity.

microRNA-200c-3p (miR-200c-3p) has emerged as an important tumor growth regulator. However, its function in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is poorly understood. This study was conducted to investigate the role of miR-200c-3p in the progression of human PTC. The miR-200c-3p expression in human PTC tissues and cell lines was evaluated. The target relationship between miR-200c-3p and candidate genes was predicted through bioinformatic analysis and confirmed with a luciferase reporter assay. miRNA or gene expression was altered using transfection, and cell behavior was analyzed using CCK-8, wound healing, Transwell, and colony formation assays. The tumor-promoting effects of miR-200c-3p were evaluated by xenografting tumors with K1 cells in nude mice. The expression level of miR-200c-3p in human PTC tissues and cell lines markedly increased, and this increased expression was significantly associated with a worse overall survival. When inactivated, miR-200c-3p suppressed K1 cells' malignant behaviors, including decreasing proliferation and attenuating colony formation, migration, and invasion. Its inactivation also attenuated the development of xenografted K1 cells in nude mice. The effects of miR-200c-3p mimics on promoting the malignant behaviors of PTC cells were remarkably reversed by the overexpression of ATP2A2, as a downstream target of miR-200c-3p. miR-200c-3p acts as an oncogenic gene and promotes the malignant biological behaviors of human PTC cells, thereby directly targeting ATP2A2. This regulated axis may be used as a potential therapy of PTC.

In this paper, a series of bio-adsorbents (LR-NaOH, LR-Na2CO3 and LR-CA) were successfully prepared by modifying Licorice Residue (LR) with NaOH, Na2CO3 and citric acid, and were used as the adsorbents to remove Cu2+ from wastewater. The morphology and structure of bio-adsorbents were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetry (TG) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Using static adsorption experiments, the effects of the adsorbent dosage, the solution pH, the adsorption time, and the initial Cu2+ concentration on the adsorption performance of the adsorbents were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption process of Cu2+ by the bio-adsorbents can be described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. The surface structure of the LR-NaOH, LR-Na2CO3 and LR-CA changed obviously, and the surface-active groups increased. The adsorption capacity of raw LR was 21.56 mg/g, while LR-NaOH and LR-Na2CO3 significantly enhanced this value up to 43.65 mg/g and 43.55 mg/g, respectively. After four adsorption-desorption processes, the adsorption capacity of LR-NaOH also maintained about 73%. Therefore, LR-NaOH would be a promising adsorbent for removing Cu2+ from wastewater, and the simple strategy towards preparation of adsorbent from the waste residue can be a potential approach for use in the water treatment.

This paper constructs planar-type graphene thin film current collectors for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The present planar-type current collector adopts FR-4 as the substrate and coats a copper thin film using thermal evaporation for the electric-conduction layer. A graphene thin film is then coated onto the current collector to prevent corrosion due to electrochemical reactions. Three different coating techniques are conducted and compared: Spin coating, RF magnetron sputtering, and screen printing. The corrosion rates and surface resistances are tested and compared for the different coating techniques. Single cell PEMFCs with the developed current collectors are assembled and tested. A PEMFC module with two cells is also designed and constructed. The cell performances are measured to investigate the device feasibility.

BACKGROUND: To provide clinicians with sufficient information for selecting optimal access strategies for patients with end-stage renal disease, the utilization of health-care services of patients receiving arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), arteriovenous grafts (AVGs), and central venous catheters (CVCs) are crucial topics that require investigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involved 1248, 431, and 323 patients with end-stage renal disease who had received an AVF, AVG, or CVC, respectively. All sampled patients were monitored over the course of a 1-y study period to evaluate their medical utilization. The utilization were further categorized into nephrology and nonnephrology services. This study also performed univariate and multivariate regressions to estimate the effects of vascular accesses. RESULTS: Regarding the utilization of health care services, significant differences were observed for mean outpatient visits (45.30 versus 49.71 versus 48.80), outpatient costs (US$19117 versus US$21015 versus US$19280), inpatient days (9.77 versus 14.41 versus 21.60), inpatient costs (US$2627 versus US$3810 versus US$5238), and total costs (US$21743 versus US$24825 versus US$24518) among patients who had received an AVF, AVG, or CVC, respectively. Furthermore, patients receiving an AVF had lower total costs for all health care services and nonnephrology services than patients undergoing AVG or CVC across the categories of men, women, adults, and elderly individuals. Multiple regressions found that patients undergoing AVF had significantly lower total costs for all health services than patients undergoing other vascular accesses after adjustments. CONCLUSIONS: This study displayed that patients who received an AVF fully used health care and nonnephrology services than patients who received an AVG or CVC.

BACKGROUND: Changes in cerebrospinal fluid, neuroimaging, and cognitive functions have been used as diagnostic biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to investigate the temporal trajectories of plasma biomarkers in subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and patients with AD relative to healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: In this longitudinal study, 82 participants (31 HCs, 33 MCI patients, and 18 AD patients) were enrolled. After 3 years, 7 HCs had transitioned to MCI and 10 subjects with MCI had converted to AD. We analyzed plasma amyloid beta (Aß) and tau proteins at baseline and annually to correlate with biochemical data and neuropsychological scores. RESULTS: Longitudinal data analysis showed an evolution of Aß-related biomarkers over time within patients, whereas tau-related biomarkers differed primarily across diagnostic classifications. An initial steady increase in Aß42 in the MCI stage was followed by a decrease just prior to clinical AD onset. Hyperphosphorylated tau protein levels correlated with cognitive decline in the MCI stage, but not in the AD stage. CONCLUSION: Plasma Aß and tau levels change in a dynamic, nonlinear, nonparallel manner over the AD continuum. Changes in plasma Aß concentration are time-dependent, whereas changes in hyperphosphorylated tau protein levels paralleled the clinical progression of MCI. It remains to be clarified whether diagnostic efficiency can be improved by combining multiple plasma markers or combining plasma markers with other diagnostic biomarkers.

A 36-year-old male patient diagnosed with severe chronic periodontitis was treated with novel surgery for his maxillary right lateral incisor. Preoperatively, a 3D printer was used, based on CBCT datasets, to produce a photosensitive resin bony anatomy replica. The patient's blood was centrifuged to obtain advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) and injected platelet-rich fibrin (I-PRF), then mixed with Bio-Oss and packed onto the 3D replica to form the ideal shape. The replica was positioned at the planned sites without changes. The A-PRF membrane was applied over the replica as well as a Bio-Gide collagen membrane. Fifteen months after the surgery, clinical and radiographic followup revealed greatly reduced pocket depths and significant 3D alveolar bone fill at the treatment site. Based on these short-term results, the initial 3D printing surgical temple assisted guided tissue regeneration method resulted in significant clinical and radiographic improvements; A-PRF/I-PRF should be considered an ideal biomaterial for regenerative periodontal therapy.

BACKGROUND: LncRNA PTCSC3 is a known tumor suppressor, while its roles in other human diseases are unclear. METHODS: All participants were admitted by The second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University from January 2016 to January 2018. RT-qPCR, Vectors, cell transfection, In vitro cell proliferation assay and western blot were using to carry out the experiment. RESULTS: In this study we found that PTCSC3 was downregulated, while toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) was upregulated in periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) isolated from periodontitis affected teeth that in PDLSCs isolated from healthy teeth. Expression levels of PTCSC3 and TLR4 were only significantly and inversely correlated in PDLSCs isolated from periodontitis affected teeth but not in PDLSCs isolated from healthy teeth. PTCSC3 overexpression led to the downregulation of TLR4 in PDLSCs isolated from periodontitis affected teeth, while TLR4 overexpression failed to significantly affect PTCSC3. PTCSC3 overexpression also led to the inhibited proliferation of periodontitis-affected PDLSCs. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, lncRNA PTCSC3 may regulate the proliferation of PDLSCs and TLR4 expression to improve periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of age, body mass index (BMI) and obesity-related biochemical indexes on semen quality in adult males intending to have a second child in Guangzhou. METHODS: We conducted a questionnaire investigation among 632 adult males seeking medical advice on their intention for a second child at Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center from August 2017 to July 2018. We obtained their lipid metabolism indicators and semen parameters, and analyzed the correlation of semen quality with age, BMI, obesity-related biochemical indexes, living environment and occupation. RESULTS: Age, BMI, season of sperm extraction, living environment and occupation all influenced the semen quality of the males. Age was correlated negatively with the percentage of progressively motile sperm (PMS) (r = -0.109, P < 0.05), BMI positively with the semen volume (r = 0.103, P < 0.05) but negatively with the percentage of morphologically normal sperm (MNS) (r = -0.138, P < 0.05), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) negatively with PMS (r = -0.168, P < 0.01) and the percentage of immotile sperm (IM) (r = -0.135, P < 0.05), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) negatively with the semen volume (r = -0.124, P < 0.01), PMS (r = -0.127, P < 0.05), sperm concentration (r = -0.121, P < 0.05) and total sperm count (r = -0.210, P < 0.01) but positively with IM (r = 0.140, P < 0.01). Multivariate regression analysis showed BMI and LDL to be independent factors influencing the semen volume, uric acid to be an independent factor influencing semen liquefaction time, age, HDL and LDL to be independent factors influencing PMS, age, and HDL to be independent factors influencing IM, LDL to be independent factors influencing total sperm count, while BMI and TG to be independent factors influencing MNS. CONCLUSIONS: Age, BMI, season of sperm extraction, living environment and occupation may affect the semen quality of the males in Guangzhou.

Tetradentate chelates bearing tripodal arranged terpyridine and a functional pyrazole unit (i.e., L1-H and L2-H) were employed in preparation of Ir(III) complexes [Ir(L1)Cl2] (1) and [Ir(L2)Cl2] (2); subsequent chloride-to-bipyrazolate substitution gave [Ir(L1)(bipz)] (3) and [Ir(L2)(bipz)] (4). Single-crystal X-ray structural studies on 1 and 3 showed the possession of a tetradentate chelate, whereas the remaining cis-sites are occupied by either dual chlorides or the bipz chelate, respectively. Sky blue organic light-emitting diode with peak efficiencies (10.1%, 19.8 cd·A-1, and 20.4 lm·W-1) was successfully fabricated using 3 (or 4) as dopant emitter, highlighting the potential application of this class of Ir(III) phosphor.

T cells are involved in the homeostasis of periodontal tissues and mediate bone loss in periodontitis, but the involvement of T-helper cells in chronic periodontitis (CP) in a Chinese population is still unclear. This study aimed to assess the distribution of peripheral and local T helper (Th17) and Th1 in CP. Sixty-eight patients with CP and 43 healthy controls were recruited from April 2012 to July 2014 at the Department of Stomatology, People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (China). The proportions of Th17 (CD3(+)CD4(+)IL-17(+)) and Th1 (CD3(+)CD4(+)IFN-γ(+)) T-cells in peripheral blood samples were assessed by flow cytometry. Immunohistochemistry was used to quantify interleukin-17 (IL-17) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) protein levels in gingival biopsy samples. mRNA levels of IL-17, IFN-γ RORγt, and T-bet in gingival biopsy samples were measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The proportions of circulating Th17 cells and Th1 cells were both more abundant in CP patients than in controls (Th17: 1.05% ± 0.87% vs. 0.62% ± 0.49%, P < 0.01; Th1: 13.93% ± 7.94% vs. 8.22% ± 4.50%, P < 0.001). Positive correlations were obtained between the proportion of circulating Th17 cells and probing depth (PD) (r = 0.320, P = 0.001) and between the proportion of circulating Th1 cells and PD (r = 0.372, P < 0.001). IL-17 and IFN-γ protein levels in gingival biopsy samples were markedly increased in CP compared to controls (both P < 0.05). Relative IFN-γ, IL-17A, and T-bet mRNA levels in CP biopsies were higher compared to controls (all P < 0.05). These results suggest that elevated peripheral and local Th17 and Th1 cells might be involved in the pathogenesis of CP.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the pathogenic mechanisms of airway inflammation and recurrent wheezing induced by recurrent respiratory virus infection after respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. METHODS: Sixty-four female BALB/c mice (aged 6-8 weeks) were randomly divided into four groups: control, RSV, Poly(I:C), and RSV+Poly(I:C) (n=16 each). The bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was collected on the 3rd day after Poly(I:C) administration, and the total cell number and differential counts in BALF were determined. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was used to observe pulmonary pathological changes. The airway responsiveness was detected. ELISA was used to measure the levels of interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-13 (IL-13), matrix metallopeptidase-9 (MMP-9), and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) in BALF. RESULTS: Compared with the other three groups, the RSV+Poly(I:C) group had significant increases in the total number of inflammatory infiltrating cells in the airway, airway responsiveness, and MMP-9 level in BALF (P<0.05). The RSV+Poly(I:C) group showed more severe pulmonary tissue injuries compared with the control and RSV groups (P<0.01). Compared with the RSV group, the RSV+Poly(I:C) group showed significant reductions in the levels of IL-4 and TIMP-1 in BALF (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Viral re-infection in the late stage of RSV infection may cause an imbalance of MMP-9/TIMP-1 expression and thus contribute to aggravated airway inflammation.

In this study, a new family of tetranuclear gold(I) triphosphine derivatives bearing alkynyl and thiolate groups have been efficiently synthesized by treating the polymeric acetylides (AuC2R)n or a thiolate (AuSPh)n sequentially with the (a) phosphine ligand and (b) cationic complex [Au3(P^P^P)2](3+) (P^P^P = PPh2CH2PPhCH2PPh2). The clusters [Au4(P^P^P)2(C2R)2](2+) [R = Ph (1), biphenyl (2), terphenyl (3), C6H4OMe (4), C6H4NMe2 (5), C6H11O (6), and C6H4CF3 (7)] and [Au4(P^P^P)2(SPh)2](2+) (8) were characterized by X-ray crystallography in the solid state. NMR spectroscopic investigations in solution revealed that the majority of alkynyl clusters 1-7 exist as two isomeric species in slow chemical equilibria. All complexes 1-8 exhibit moderate-to-strong photoemission in the solid state with quantum yields from 0.07 to 0.51. The luminescence behavior was rationalized using quantum chemical density functional theory methods. The high emission efficiency of these tetragold(I) compounds and their good stability in film allowed for the fabrication of an organic electroluminescent device (OLED). Employing complex 5 (Φ = 0.51), an OLED was fabricated under a solution process to give a good external quantum efficiency of 3.1%, corresponding to a current efficiency of 6.1 cd/A and a power efficiency of 5.3 lm/W, with Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage coordinates of (0.52, 0.46).
