OBJECTIVES: Currently, there are no guidelines for when to use an antiepileptic drug (AED) in nonepileptic panic disorder (PD) patients. We conducted this review to ascertain what guidance available literature can provide as to when to consider AEDs for PD patients. METHODS: The primary data sources were PubMed and Google-Scholars. Search was limited to "English" and "Humans". Only papers addressing use of nonbenzodiazepine AEDs in PD were included. Data regarding study subjects, the AED utilized, and clinical responses were collected. EEG data were used to classify reports of patients with abnormal versus those with normal and/or no EEG work-up. RESULTS: Ten reports were identified for use of AEDs in PD patients with abnormal EEGs with a total of 20 patients (17 responders). None of the 10 reports were controlled studies. Eighteen reports were identified for use of AEDs in panic patients with either normal EEGs or unselected groups (no EEG work-up). Out of the 18 reports, three were controlled studies. Included in the 18 studies were 253 patients (137 responders). CONCLUSIONS: We preliminary concluded that EEG work-up could be useful in guiding the treatment in PD as an abnormal EEG may be indicative of a higher likelihood of a positive response to an AED.

Enigma protein, encoded by the PDLIM7 gene, is overexpressed in thyroid cancer in a stage-dependent manner, suggesting a potential involvement in the initiation and progression of thyroid cancer. The Enigma interacts with several cellular pathways, including PI3K/AKT, MDM2, and BMP-1. The Enigma is regulated by microRNAs. Specifically, we showed that the Enigma protein upregulation corresponds to the downregulation of Let-7 family genes. There is limited research on the interactions and regulation of the Enigma with other proteins/genes in thyroid cancer tissues, indicating a gap in current knowledge. Our aim is to establish the Enigma as a biomarker. We also aim to study the interacting partners of the Enigma signaling pathways and their probable miRNA regulation in thyroid cancer progression. Using Western blotting, densitometric analysis, immunoprecipitation (IP), and reverse IP, we detected the protein expression and protein-protein interactions in the corresponding papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs). Utilizing real-time qPCR assay and Pearson's correlation test, we highlighted the correlation between PDLIM7 and Let-7g gene expression in the same tissues. The results showed the differential upregulations of the Enigma protein in different stages of PTCs compared to benign tissues along with AKT, VDR, BMP-1, and MDM2 proteins. Loss of DBP was observed in a subset of PTCs. Strong interactions of the Enigma with PI3K/AKT and MDM2 were noted, along with a weaker BMP-1 interaction. Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis between PDLIM7 and let-7g gene expression was significant (p < 0.05); however, there was a weak inverse correlation (r = -0.27). The study suggests the potential utility of the PDLIM7-qPCR assay as a biomarker for thyroid cancer. The Enigma's interactions with key signaling pathways may provide valuable insights into the development of thyroid cancer. The study contributes to understanding the molecular mechanisms involving the Enigma protein in thyroid cancer and highlights its potential as a biomarker.

AIM: To determine the changes in the sequence and age of eruption of permanent teeth in 5-15-year-old schoolchildren, correlating their dental and chronological age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1,477 schoolchildren aged between 5 years and 15 years were examined for the eruption timing, body mass index (BMI), and other oral findings. Dental age was calculated for 10% of the total sample using the Willem's method from their ortho-pento graphs (OPGs) and correlated with their chronological age. RESULTS: The maxillary teeth erupted earlier than mandibular teeth. Males were found to mature earlier than females. The sequence of eruption observed was: males (maxilla) 1-6-2-4-3-5-7 and (mandible) 1-6-2-3-4-5-7; females (maxilla) 6-1-2-4-3-5-7 and (mandible) 1-6-2-3-4-5-7. The chronological age and the dental age were found to be different in the age range of 9-10 years female; 10-11 years male; and in 13-14 years both male and female. Also when the dental age was correlated with the BMI, the dental age of obese children in 5-6 years and underweight children in 10-11 years were found to be far ahead of their actual chronological age. CONCLUSION: This study opens an expected door for a large sample size to be tested in various local populations with different ethnicity and race as there can be changing trend in the eruption pattern. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Changing trends in the sequence and age of eruption of the permanent teeth definitely need to be looked into. As this change, if firmly established in future, can help pedodontist in better planning of space management, interceptive as well as full-mouth orthodontic treatment which largely depends on this sequence being true in most of the cases.
