RESUMEN

Memory T cell responses have been demonstrated in COVID-19 convalescents, but ex vivo phenotypes of SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells have been unclear. We detected SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ T cells by MHC class I multimer staining and examined their phenotypes and functions in acute and convalescent COVID-19. Multimer+ cells exhibited early differentiated effector-memory phenotypes in the early convalescent phase. The frequency of stem-like memory cells was increased among multimer+ cells in the late convalescent phase. Cytokine secretion assays combined with MHC class I multimer staining revealed that the proportion of interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-producing cells was significantly lower among SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ T cells than those specific to influenza A virus. Importantly, the proportion of IFN-γ-producing cells was higher in PD-1+ cells than PD-1- cells among multimer+ cells, indicating that PD-1-expressing, SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ T cells are not exhausted, but functional. Our current findings provide information for understanding of SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ T cells elicited by infection or vaccination.

The specific loss of midbrain dopamine neurons (mDANs) causes major motor dysfunction in Parkinson's disease, which makes cell replacement a promising therapeutic approach1-4. However, poor survival of grafted mDANs remains an obstacle to successful clinical outcomes5-8. Here we show that the surgical procedure itself (referred to here as 'needle trauma') triggers a profound host response that is characterized by acute neuroinflammation, robust infiltration of peripheral immune cells and brain cell death. When midbrain dopamine (mDA) cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells were transplanted into the rodent striatum, less than 10% of implanted tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)+ mDANs survived at two weeks after transplantation. By contrast, TH- grafted cells mostly survived. Notably, transplantation of autologous regulatory T (Treg) cells greatly modified the response to needle trauma, suppressing acute neuroinflammation and immune cell infiltration. Furthermore, intra-striatal co-transplantation of Treg cells and human-iPS-cell-derived mDA cells significantly protected grafted mDANs from needle-trauma-associated death and improved therapeutic outcomes in rodent models of Parkinson's disease with 6-hydroxydopamine lesions. Co-transplantation with Treg cells also suppressed the undesirable proliferation of TH- grafted cells, resulting in more compact grafts with a higher proportion and higher absolute numbers of TH+ neurons. Together, these data emphasize the importance of the initial inflammatory response to surgical injury in the differential survival of cellular components of the graft, and suggest that co-transplanting autologous Treg cells effectively reduces the needle-trauma-induced death of mDANs, providing a potential strategy to achieve better clinical outcomes for cell therapy in Parkinson's disease.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (2D TMD) semiconductors allow facile integration of p- and n-type materials without a lattice mismatch. Here, we demonstrate gate-tunable n- and p-type junctions based on vertical heterostructures of MoS2 and WSe2 using van der Waals (vdW) contacts. The p-n junction shows negative differential resistance (NDR) due to Fowler-Nordheim (F-N) tunneling through the triangular barrier formed by applying a global back-gate bias (VGS). We also show that the integration of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as an insulating tunnel barrier between MoS2 and WSe2 leads to the formation of sharp band edges and unintentional inelastic tunnelling current. The devices based on vdW contacts, global VGS, and h-BN tunnel barriers exhibit NDR with a peak current (Ipeak) of 315 µA, suggesting that the approach may be useful for applications.

The detailed association between tumor DNA methylation, including CpG island methylation, and tumor immunity is poorly understood. CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) is observed typically in sporadic colorectal cancers (CRCs) with microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H). Here, we investigated the differential features of the tumor immune microenvironment according to CIMP status in MSI-H CRCs. CIMP-high (CIMP-H) or CIMP-low/negative (CIMP-L/0) status was determined using MethyLight assay in 133 MSI-H CRCs. All MSI-H CRCs were subjected to digital pathology-based quantification of CD3 + /CD8 + /CD4 + /FoxP3 + /CD68 + /CD204 + /CD177 + tumor-infiltrating immune cells using whole-slide immunohistochemistry. Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunohistochemistry was evaluated using the tumor proportion score (TPS) and combined positive score (CPS). Representative cases were analyzed using whole-exome and RNA-sequencing. In 133 MSI-H CRCs, significantly higher densities of CD8 + tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) were observed in CIMP-H tumors compared with CIMP-L/0 tumors. PD-L1 TPS and CPS in CIMP-H tumors were higher than in CIMP-L/0 tumors. Next-generation sequencing revealed that, compared with CIMP-L/0 tumors, CIMP-H tumors had higher fractions of CD8 + T cells/cytotoxic lymphocytes, higher cytolytic activity scores, and activated immune-mediated cell killing pathways. In contrast to CIMP-L/0 tumors, most CIMP-H tumors were identified as consensus molecular subtype 1, an immunogenic transcriptomic subtype of CRC. However, there were no differences in tumor mutational burden (TMB) between CIMP-H and CIMP-L/0 tumors in MSI-H CRCs. In conclusion, CIMP-H is associated with abundant cytotoxic CD8 + TILs and PD-L1 overexpression independent of TMB in MSI-H CRCs, suggesting that CIMP-H tumors represent a typical immune-hot subtype and are optimal candidates for immunotherapy in MSI-H tumors.

Enhancing the mobility of lithium-ions (Li+) through surface engineering is one of major challenges facing fast-charging lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In case of demanding charging conditions, the use of a conventional artificial graphite (AG) anode leads to an increase in operating temperature and the formation of lithium dendrites on the anode surface. In this study, a biphasic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-AG anode, designed strategically and coated with a mesoporous material, is verified to improve the pathways of Li+ and electrons under a high charging current density. In particular, the graphite surface is treated with a coating of a ZIF-8-derived carbon nanoparticles, which addresses sufficient surface porosity, enabling this material to serve as an electrolyte reservoir and facilitate Li+ intercalation. Moreover, the augmentation in specific surface area proves advantageous in reducing the overpotential for interfacial charge transfer reactions. In practical terms, employing a full-cell with the biphasic ZIF-AG anode results in a shorter charging time and improved cycling performance, demonstrating no evidence of Li plating during 300 cycles under 3.0 C-charging and 1.0 C-discharging. The research endeavors to contribute to the progress of anode materials by enhancing their charging capability, aligning with the increasing requirements of the electric vehicle applications.

BACKGROUND: The obesity paradox suggests that individuals with obesity may have a survival advantage against specific critical illnesses, including sepsis. However, whether this paradox occurs at younger ages remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether obesity could improve survival in younger adult patients with sepsis. METHODS: We used clinical data sourced from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database. Patients with Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score ≥2 and suspected infection at the time of ICU admission were identified as having sepsis, following the Sepsis-3 definition. Individuals were classified into the obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²) and non-obesity (BMI <30 kg/m²) groups. Patients aged <50 and ≥50 years were categorized as younger adult patients and older patients, respectively. RESULTS: Of 73,181 patients in the MIMIC-IV ICU database, 18,120 satisfied the inclusion criteria: 2642 aged <50 years and 15,478 aged ≥50 years. The Kaplan-Meier curve showed that obesity was not associated with an improved mortality rate among younger adult patients with sepsis (log-rank test: P = 0.197), while obesity exhibited a survival benefit in older patients with sepsis (log-rank test: P < 0.001). After propensity score matching, in-hospital mortality did not differ significantly between the obesity and non-obesity groups (13.3% vs. 12.2%; P = 0.457) in the younger adult patients with sepsis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that BMI was not an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality in younger adult patients with sepsis (underweight: adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.72, P = 0.076; overweight: aOR 0.88, P = 0.437; obesity: aOR 0.93, P = 0.677; and severe obesity: aOR 1.22, P = 0.580, with normal weight as the reference). CONCLUSION: Contrary to findings regarding older patients with sepsis, our findings suggest that the obesity paradox does not apply to younger adult patients with sepsis.

The presence of the giant component is a necessary condition for the emergence of collective behavior in complex networked systems. Unlike networks, hypergraphs have an important native feature that components of hypergraphs might be of higher order, which could be defined in terms of the number of common nodes shared between hyperedges. Although the extensive higher-order component (HOC) could be witnessed ubiquitously in real-world hypergraphs, the role of the giant HOC in collective behavior on hypergraphs has yet to be elucidated. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the presence of the giant HOC fundamentally alters the outbreak patterns of higher-order contagion dynamics on real-world hypergraphs. Most crucially, the giant HOC is required for the higher-order contagion to invade globally from a single seed. We confirm it by using synthetic random hypergraphs containing adjustable and analytically calculable giant HOC.

BACKGROUND: The demand for organ transplants, both globally and in South Korea, substantially exceeds the supply, a situation that might have been aggravated by the enactment of the Life-Sustaining Treatment Decision Act (LSTDA) in February 2018. This legislation may influence emergency medical procedures and the availability of organs from brain-dead donors. This study aimed to assess LSTDA's impact, introduced in February 2018, on organ donation status in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients in a metropolitan city and identified related factors. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of a regional cardiac arrest registry. This study included patients aged 16 or older with cardiac arrest and a cerebral performance category (CPC) score of 5 from January 2015 to December 2022. The exclusion criteria were CPC scores of 1-4, patients under 16 years, and patients declared dead or transferred from emergency departments. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyse factors affecting organ donation. RESULTS: Of the 751 patients included in this study, 47 were organ donors, with a median age of 47 years. Before the LSTDA, there were 30 organ donations, which declined to 17 after its implementation. In the organ donation group, the causes of cardiac arrest included medical (34%), hanging (46.8%), and trauma (19.2%). The adjusted odds ratio for organ donation before the LSTDA implementation was 6.12 (95% CI 3.09-12.12), with non-medical aetiology as associated factors. CONCLUSION: The enactment of the LSTDA in 2018 in South Korea may be linked to reduced organ donations among patients with OHCA, underscoring the need to re-evaluate the medical and legal aspects of organ donation, especially considering end-of-life care decisions.

CDX2 and SATB2 are often used as biomarkers for identification of colorectal origin in primary or metastatic adenocarcinomas. Loss of CDX2 or SATB2 expression has been associated with poor prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). However, little is known regarding clinicopathological features, including prognosis, of CRCs with concomitant loss of CDX2 and SATB2. A total of 431 stage III CRCs were analyzed for their expression status in CDX2 and SATB2 using tissue microarray-based immunohistochemistry and expression status was correlated with clinicopathological variables, molecular alterations, and survival. CDX2-negative (CDX2-) CRCs and SATB2-negative (SATB2-) CRCs were found in 8.1 % and 17.2 % of CRCs, respectively, whereas both CDX2-negative and SATB2-negative (CDX2-/SATB2-) CRCs comprised 3.2 % of the CRCs. On survival analysis, neither CDX2-/SATB2+ nor CDX2+/SABT2- CRCs but CDX2-/SATB2- CRCs were associated with poor prognosis. CDX2-/SATB2- CRCs showed significant associations with tumor subsite of right colon, poor differentiation, decreased expression of CK20, aberrant expression of CK7, CIMP-high, MSI-high, and BRAF mutation. In summary, our results suggest that concomitant loss of CDX2 and SATB2 is a prognostic biomarker but isolated loss of CDX2 or SATB2 is not a prognostic biomarker for stage III CRCs.

The demand for high-speed and low-loss interconnects in modern computer architectures is difficult to satisfy by using traditional Si-based electronics. Although optical interconnects offer a promising solution owing to their high bandwidth, low energy dissipation, and high-speed processing, integrating elements such as a light source, detector, and modulator, comprising different materials with optical waveguides, presents many challenges in an integrated platform. Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors have attracted considerable attention in vertically stackable optoelectronics and advanced flexible photonics. In this study, optoelectronic components for exciton-based photonic circuits are demonstrated by integrating lithographically patterned poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) waveguides on 2D vdW devices. The excitonic signals generated from the 2D materials by using laser excitation were transmitted through patterned PMMA waveguides. By introducing an external electric field and combining vdW heterostructures, an excitonic switch, phototransistor, and guided-light photovoltaic device on SiO2/Si substrates were demonstrated.

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) display heterogeneity in origin and functional role in tissue homeostasis. Subsets of MSCs derived from the neural crest express nestin and serve as niches in bone marrow, but the possibility of coaxing MSCs into nestin-expresing cells for enhanced supportive activity is unclear. In this study, as an approach to the chemical coaxing of MSC functions, we screened libraries of clinically approved chemicals to identify compounds capable of inducing nestin expression in MSCs. Out of 2000 clinical compounds, we chose vorinostat as a candidate to coax the MSCs into neural crest-like fates. When treated with vorinostat, MSCs exhibited a significant increase in the expression of genes involved in the pluripotency and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), as well as nestin and CD146, the markers for pericytes. In addition, these nestin-induced MSCs exhibited enhanced differentiation towards neuronal cells with the upregulation of neurogenic markers, including SRY-box transcription factor 2 (Sox2), SRY-box transcription factor 10 (Sox10) and microtubule associated protein 2 (Map2) in addition to nestin. Moreover, the coaxed MSCs exhibited enhanced supporting activity for hematopoietic progenitors without supporting leukemia cells. These results demonstrate the feasibility of the drug repositioning of MSCs to induce neural crest-like properties through the chemical coaxing of cell fates.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the clinical accuracy and utility of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of plasma microbial cell-free DNA (cfDNA) as a novel noninvasive method in diagnosing invasive aspergillosis (IA) in patients with hematologic malignancy (HM) or coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: Adults with HM or COVID-19 and suspected IA were recruited. IA cases were retrospectively diagnosed according to EORTC/MSG definitions and ECMM/ISHAM criteria for HM and COVID-19 patients, respectively. The results of cfDNA WGS were compared with the conventional diagnosis. RESULTS: Microbial cfDNA WGS was performed 53 times from 41 participants (19 from HM, 16 from COVID-19, and 7 from the control group). In participants with HM, Aspergillus cfDNA was detected in 100% of proven IA and 91.7% of probable IA cases. In participants with COVID-19, 50.0% of probable IA were positive for Aspergillus in cfDNA WGS. Concordance between Aspergillus cfDNA detection and proven/probable IA conventional diagnosis was significantly higher in participants with HM than in those with COVID-19. IA diagnosed using EORTC/MGS definitions showed significantly high concordance between Aspergillus cfDNA detection and proven/probable IA. CONCLUSIONS: Aspergillus cfDNA detection strongly correlated with proven/probable IA diagnosed using EORTC/MSG definitions and could be used as an additional diagnostic tool for IA.

Quasi-1D nanoribbons provide a unique route to diversifying the properties of their parent 2D nanomaterial, introducing lateral quantum confinement and an abundance of edge sites. Here, a new family of nanomaterials is opened with the creation of arsenic-phosphorus alloy nanoribbons (AsPNRs). By ionically etching the layered crystal black arsenic-phosphorus using lithium electride followed by dissolution in amidic solvents, solutions of AsPNRs are formed. The ribbons are typically few-layered, several micrometers long with widths tens of nanometers across, and both highly flexible and crystalline. The AsPNRs are highly electrically conducting above 130 K due to their small band gap (ca. 0.035 eV), paramagnetic in nature, and have high hole mobilities, as measured with the first generation of AsP devices, directly highlighting their properties and utility in electronic devices such as near-infrared detectors, quantum computing, and charge carrier layers in solar cells.

Although the T helper 2 (Th2) subset is a critical player in the humoral immune response to extracellular parasites and suppression of Th1-mediated inflammation, Th2 cells have been implicated in allergic inflammatory diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) is a primary transcription factor that mediates Th2 differentiation and secretion of Th2 cytokines, including IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. Here, a nucleus-deliverable form of GATA3-transcription modulation domain (TMD) (ndG3-TMD) was generated using Hph-1 human protein transduction domain (PTD) to modulate the transcriptional function of endogenous GATA3 without genetic manipulation. ndG3-TMD was shown to be efficiently delivered into the cell nucleus quickly without affecting cell viability or intracellular signaling events for T cell activation. ndG3-TMD exhibited a specific inhibitory function for the endogenous GATA3-mediated transcription, such as Th2 cell differentiation and Th2-type cytokine production. Intranasal administration of ndG3-TMD significantly alleviated airway hyperresponsiveness, infiltration of immune cells, and serum IgE level in an OVA-induced mouse model of asthma. Also, Th2 cytokine secretion by the splenocytes isolated from the ndG3-TMD-treated mice substantially decreased. Our results suggest that ndG3-TMD can be a new therapeutic reagent to suppress Th2-mediated allergic diseases through intranasal delivery.

MOTIVATION: Predicting drug response is critical for precision medicine. Diverse methods have predicted drug responsiveness, as measured by the half-maximal drug inhibitory concentration (IC50), in cultured cells. Although IC50s are continuous, traditional prediction models have dealt mainly with binary classification of responsiveness. However, since there are few regression-based IC50 predictions, comprehensive evaluations of regression-based IC50 prediction models, including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), for diverse data types and dataset sizes, have not been addressed. RESULTS: Here, we constructed 11 input data settings, including multi-omics settings, with varying dataset sizes, then evaluated the performance of regression-based ML and DL models to predict IC50s. DL models considered two convolutional neural network architectures: CDRScan and residual neural network (ResNet). ResNet was introduced in regression-based DL models for predicting drug response for the first time. As a result, DL models performed better than ML models in all the settings. Also, ResNet performed better than or comparable to CDRScan and ML models in all settings. BACKGROUND: Little is known about the risk factors and frequency of metronidazole-associated neurological adverse events. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors and frequency of metronidazole-associated neurological adverse events. DESIGN: This retrospective study contained two parts. First, we investigated metronidazole treatment-associated neurologic adverse events by performing a population-based cohort study using the Korea Adverse Event Reporting System (KAERS) database from January 2011 to December 2020. Second, we conducted a matched case-control study based on a retrospective cohort of patients treated with metronidazole between January 2006 and July 2021 at a tertiary hospital in South Korea. The data analysis was performed from August 2021 to April 2022. PARTICIPANTS: In the case-control study, case patients were defined as those diagnosed with metronidazole-associated encephalopathy or peripheral neuropathy during the study period with causal assessment based on the clinical diagnoses and findings from associated tests. In a ratio of 1:3, case patients were compared to a control group of patients prescribed metronidazole without neurologic adverse events matched for age and cumulative dose of metronidazole. MAIN MEASURES: Frequency and risk factors for metronidazole-associated neurological adverse events. KEY RESULTS: Overall, 2,309 cases of neurologic adverse events were reported to the KAERS from 2011 to 2020, and the number of reported neurological adverse events showed an increasing trend. Further, 92,838 patients were prescribed metronidazole during the study period at the Severance Hospital; 54 patients were diagnosed with metronidazole-associated encephalopathy or peripheral neuropathy, 40 with central and 28 with peripheral nervous system adverse events. Liver cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease, intravenous administration, and lower body weight were identified as risk factors for these adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: The number of reported metronidazole-associated neurological adverse events are increasing. Prolonged metronidazole treatment in patients with the aforementioned factors requires careful examination for neurological adverse events.

BACKGROUND: Interest in complications and sequelae following Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is increasing. Several articles have reported COVID-19-associated autoimmune diseases and the association between autoantibodies and the severity of COVID-19. Thromboembolic complications are frequent in patients with COVID-19, and the anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPL) is frequently detected. We conducted this study to investigate the prevalence, clinical significance, and persistence of anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) and aPLs in COVID-19. METHODS: We enrolled patients diagnosed with COVID-19 with oxygen demand and admitted to a tertiary hospital in South Korea between July 2020 and March 2022. ANA and aPLs levels were assessed using an immunoassay kit. RESULTS: A total of 248 patients were enrolled in the study. Among them, five patients were ANA-positive, and 41 were aPL-positive (IgM anti-cardiolipin (aCL) antibody in seven patients, IgG aCL in seven patients, IgM anti-ß2Glycoprotein1 antibody (aß2-GPI) in 32 patients, and IgG aß2-GPI in one patient). Two of five ANA-positive patients, 13 of 32 IgM aß2-GPI-positive patients, 5 of 7 IgM aCL-positive patients, and 2 of 7 IgG aCL-positive patients were eligible for follow-up analysis, and 100%, 69.2%, 40%, and 50% of the patients remained autoantibody-positive, respectively. There were no differences in clinical outcomes between the autoantibody-positive and autoantibody-negative groups, except for the IgG aCL group showing a tendency for worse outcomes. CONCLUSION: A significant proportion of COVID-19 patients with oxygen demand were autoantibody-positive, and autoantibodies persisted for several months after symptom onset. Whether these autoantibodies are related to long-term sequelae in COVID-19 patients requires further investigation.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic invasion, vascular invasion, and perineural invasion are prognostic factors for colon cancer. However, the prognostic significance of those factors according to the location of permeation (intramural and extramural invasion) in stage II colon cancer is still unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to clarify whether the location of lymphatic invasion, vascular invasion, and perineural invasion could affect the survival of patients with stage II colon cancer. DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study. SETTINGS: This study took place at a university teaching hospital. PATIENTS: A total of 1130 patients with stage II colon cancers who underwent radical surgery at the Seoul National University Hospital between July 2003 and December 2015 were included. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Patients were classified according to the location of lymphatic invasion, vascular invasion, and perineural invasion. Survival outcomes were compared among those without invasion and those with intramural and extramural invasion. Primary end point is overall survival and secondary end point is disease-free survival. RESULTS: Disease-free survival and overall survival of patients with extramural invasion were worse than those of patients without invasion and those with intramural invasion. Multivariate analysis for survival outcomes confirmed that extramural invasion was a significant independent prognostic factor. However, both disease-free survival and overall survival were not significantly different between patients without invasion and those with intramural invasion. LIMITATIONS: This study was limited by its retrospective design. CONCLUSIONS: Extramural invasion was associated with worse prognosis in stage II colon cancer, but intramural invasion was not. Therefore, pathologic reports about the location of lymphatic invasion, vascular invasion, and perineural invasion might be helpful for predicting prognosis and for determining the need of adjuvant chemotherapy in stage II colon cancers. PURPOSE: We aimed to explore the clinical characteristics of Campylobacter bacteraemia and identify the trends, risk factors for mortality, and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns from clinical samples. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients confirmed to have Campylobacter bacteraemia from seven hospitals between January 2010 and June 2021. Data on demographics and underlying history, clinical manifestation, and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns were collected and analyzed. Annual cases of Campylobacter enteritis were extracted from a public database. RESULTS: A total of 108 patients were included, and five species were isolated. Campylobacter jejuni accounted for 54 (50.0%) cases and 17 (16%) patients had no symptoms other than fever. In-hospital mortality occurred in 14 (13.0%) patients. C. jejuni bacteraemia was associated with lower mortality compared to non-C. jejuni bacteraemia. Underlying cancer and septic shock were the significant factors associated with in-hospital mortality. Quinolone resistance was high (59%), whereas only 4% of isolates exhibited macrolide resistance. There has been a significant increase in the number of Campylobacter enteritis cases, which was strongly correlated with the number of Campylobacter bacteraemia cases (Pearson's coefficient: 0.953; p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: The notably increasing incidence of Campylobacter bacteraemia and antibiotic resistance patterns can challenge the treatment, necessitating collective efforts of national surveillance and networks by many departments.

van der Waals (vdW) layered materials have shown great potential for future optoelectronic applications owing to their unique and variable properties. In particular, two-dimensional layered materials enable the creation of various circuital building blocks via vertical stacking, e.g. the vertical p-n junction as a key one. While numerous stable n-type layered materials have been discovered, p-type materials remain relatively scarce. Here, we report on the study of multilayer germanium arsenide (GeAs), another emerging p-type vdW layered material. We first verify the efficient hole transport in a multilayer GeAs field-effect transistor with Pt electrodes, which establish low contact potential barriers. Subsequently, we demonstrate a p-n photodiode featuring a vertical heterojunction of a multilayer GeAs and n-type MoS2monolayer, exhibiting a photovoltaic response. This study promotes that 2D GeAs is a promising candidate for p-type material in vdW optoelectronic devices.
