RESUMEN

Liposuction is a common aesthetic procedure; however, to date, liposuction has not been linked to morphea. The aim was to review cases with a history of liposuction that presented active morphea lesions in the same surgery regions and were confirmed by ultrasound and histology. A retrospective descriptive analysis of the clinical, ultrasonographic, and pathology database took place (2014-2020). Eleven patients met the criteria. Ultrasound supported the diagnosis, and the ultrasonographic signs of activity in these cases matched the features described in the literature in 100% of cases. In summary, morphea may appear after liposuction and ultrasound can support its early detection.

BACKGROUND: Chemical composition analysis of urinary stones is a fundamental part of the metabolic workup of urolithiasis. AIM: To report the chemical composition of urinary stones using infrared spectroscopy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The chemical composition of rinary stones recovered from 649 patients aged 1 to 97 years (68% males), were analyzed using a Perkin Elmer FTIR Spectrometer, Spectrum Two. RESULTS: Calcium oxalate monohydrate was the most common composition found in 45% of cases, followed by mixed composition, which included three ammonium phosphate stones in 29% of cases. Pure uric acid composition was found in 16% of stones. Three cystine stones were detected. CONCLUSIONS: These findings do not differ from those found in developed countries.

BACKGROUND: The day after COVID-19 quarantine started, we initiated patient care through Tele-dermatology. AIM: To report the experience of the implementation of Telemedicine in dermatology and to assess its impact on the number of dermatological visits compared with the pre-pandemic period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted between March 27th, 2020, and April 30th, 2020. All patients submitted clinical images of their skin condition via secure email before the telemedicine visit. All telemedicine visits were conducted using the Zoom video conferencing platform. Patient demographics and medical history were recorded. If the dermatologist was unable to reach a diagnosis, the patient was sent for an in-person visit, skin biopsy, or additional laboratory workup. RESULTS: We recorded 1,357 Tele dermatology visits from 1,222 patients aged 29 ± 18 years (38% males). Visits increased from 104 to 298 from the first to the last week, corresponding to 17% of the patient volume seen before the pandemic (1,709 in-person patients/week). A preliminary diagnosis was made in 95% of cases. Ninety percent of patients sent photos. Fifty eight percent of cases were chronic diseases, and were classified as inflammatory in 68%, infectious in 15%, neoplastic/tumoral in 7%, or other conditions in 11%. Less than 1% of these visits were COVID-19 related. CONCLUSIONS: In this prospective study of Tele-dermatology lasting five weeks, a preliminary diagnosis could be made in approximately 95% of cases and in the first five weeks of implementation, a volume of consultations equivalent to 17% of those made in the pre-pandemic period was carried out. Therefore, Tele-dermatology can be implemented quickly and successfully in practices when healthcare access is limited.

Sertoli cells provide the nutritional and metabolic support for germ cells. Wnt/ß-catenin signaling is important for the development of the seminiferous epithelium during embryonic age, although after birth this pathway is downregulated. Cx43 gene codes for a protein that is critical during testicular development. The Cx43 promoter contains TCF/ß-catenin binding elements (TBEs) that contribute CX43 expression in different cell types and which may also be regulating the expression of this gene in Sertoli cells. In this study, we demonstrate that 42GPA9 Sertoli cells respond to treatments that result in accumulation of ß-catenin within the nucleus and in upregulation of CX43 gene transcription. ß-Catenin binds to TBEs located both upstream and downstream of the transcriptional start site (TSS). Luciferase reporter experiments revealed that TBEs located upstream of the TSS are necessary for ß-catenin-mediated upregulation. Our results also indicate that the Wnt/ß-catenin-dependent upregulation of the Cx43 gene in Sertoli cells is accompanied by changes in epigenetic parameters that may be directly contributing to generating a chromatin environment that facilitates the establishment of the transcriptional machinery at this promoter.

Interleukin-3 (IL-3) is a well-characterized growth factor in hematopoietic cells, but it is also expressed in other cell types with poorly described functions. Many studies have provided evidence that IL-3 plays an important role in cell survival. We have previously shown that IL-3 is able to increase glucose uptake in HEK293 cells, suggesting that this factor requires sustained glucose metabolism to promote cell survival. In this study, we demonstrate that IL-3 contributes to cell survival under oxidative stress, a prominent feature in the pathophysiology of cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in the aging process. Our results suggest a molecular mechanism that involves signaling pathways mediated by PI-3k/Akt and Erk. Altogether, these findings show an important role for IL-3 in supporting the viability of non-hematopoietic systems. J. Cell. Biochem. 118: 1330-1340, 2017. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

COVID-19 has a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from asymptomatic-mild form to severe phenotype. The severity of COVID-19 is a complex trait influenced by various genetic and environmental factors. Ethnic differences have been observed in relation to COVID-19 severity during the pandemic. It is currently unknown whether genetic variations may contribute to the increased risk of severity observed in Latin-American individuals The aim of this study is to investigate the potential correlation between gene variants at CCL2, OAS1, and DPP9 genes and the severity of COVID-19 in a population from Quito, Ecuador. This observational case-control study was conducted at the Carrera de Biologia from the Universidad Central del Ecuador and the Hospital Quito Sur of the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social (Quito-SUR-IESS), Quito, Ecuador. Genotyping for gene variants at rs1024611 (A>G), rs10774671 (A>G), and rs10406145 (G>C) of CCL2, OAS1, and DPP9 genes was performed on 100 COVID-19 patients (43 with severe form and 57 asymptomatic-mild) using RFLP-PCR. The genotype distribution of all SNVs throughout the entire sample of 100 individuals showed Hardy Weinberg equilibrium (P=0.53, 0.35, and 0.4 for CCL2, OAS1, and DPP9, respectively). The HWE test did not find any statistically significant difference in genotype distribution between the study and control groups for any of the three SNVs. The multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that individuals with the GG of the CCL2 rs1024611 gene variant had an increased association with the severe COVID-19 phenotype in a recessive model (P = 0.0003, OR = 6.43, 95% CI 2.19-18.89) and for the OAS1 rs10774671 gene variant, the log-additive model showed a significant association with the severe phenotype of COVID-19 (P=0.0084, OR=3.85, 95% CI 1.33-11.12). Analysis of haplotype frequencies revealed that the coexistence of GAG at CCL2, OAS1, and DPP9 variants, respectively, in the same individual increased the presence of the severe COVID-19 phenotype (OR=2.273, 95% CI: 1.271-4.068, P=0.005305). The findings of the current study suggests that the ethnic background affects the allele and genotype frequencies of genes associated with the severity of COVID-19. The experience with COVID-19 has provided an opportunity to identify an ethnicity-based approach to recognize genetically high-risk individuals in different populations for emerging diseases.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) supplementation on in vitro fermentation and animal performance using a backgrounding diet. In experiment 1, incubations were conducted on three separate days (replicates). Treatments were control (CTL, without NPN), urea (U), urea-biuret (UB), and urea-biuret-nitrate (UBN) mixtures. Except for control, treatments were isonitrogenous using 1% U inclusion as a reference. Ruminal fluid was collected from two Angus-crossbred steers fed a backgrounding diet plus 100 g of a UBN mixture for at least 35 d. The concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), and total gas and methane (CH4) production were determined at 24 h of incubation. In experiment 2, 72 Angus-crossbred yearling steers (303 ±â€…29 kg of body weight [BW]) were stratified by BW and randomly allocated in nine pens (eight animals/pen and three pens/treatment). Steers consumed a backgrounding diet formulated to match the diet used in the in vitro fermentation experiment. Treatments were U, UB, and UBN and were isonitrogenous using 1% U inclusion as a reference. Steers were adapted to the NPN supplementation for 17 d. Then, digestibility evaluation was performed after 13 d of full NPN supplementation for 4 d using 36 steers (12 steers/treatment). After that, steer performance was evaluated for 56 d (24 steers/treatment). In experiment 1, NPN supplementation increased the concentration of NH3-N and VFA (P < 0.01) without affecting the IVOMD (P = 0.48), total gas (P = 0.51), and CH4 production (P = 0.57). Additionally, in vitro fermentation parameters did not differ (P > 0.05) among NPN sources. In experiment 2, NPN supplementation did not change dry matter and nutrient intake (P > 0.05). However, UB and UBN showed lower (P < 0.05) nutrient digestibility than U, except for starch (P = 0.20). Dry matter intake (P = 0.28), average daily gain (P = 0.88), and gain:feed (P = 0.63) did not differ among steers receiving NPN mixtures. In conclusion, tested NPN mixtures have the potential to be included in the backgrounding diets without any apparent negative effects on animal performance and warrant further studies to evaluate other variables to fully assess the response of feeding these novel NPN mixtures.


Nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) supplements can be used as a nitrogen source for ruminants fed low-protein diets. The most common NPN source is urea, included typically at a range between 0.5% and 1% of the diet dry matter in growing beef cattle. Although other NPN sources and mixtures are available, there is scarce information regarding their use in ruminant production. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of NPN sources on in vitro fermentation and animal performance using a backgrounding diet. In experiment 1, three different incubations were performed for 24 h. Treatments were control (without NPN), urea (U), urea­biuret (UB), and urea­biuret­nitrate (UBN) mixtures. In experiment 2, 72 crossbred yearling steers were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: U, UB, and UBN mixtures. Diets were formulated to contain the same nitrogen concentration in both experiments. In experiment 1, supplementation of NPN increased the in vitro fermentation, but there were no differences among NPN sources. In experiment 2, steers performed similarly among NPN sources. These findings suggest that NPN mixtures have the potential to be included in the backgrounding diets without detrimental effects. Further studies should evaluate other variables (e.g., fermentation dynamic and microbial protein supply) when using these novel mixtures.

Glycogen is the main source of glucose for many biological events. However, this molecule may have other functions, including those that have deleterious effects on cells. The rate-limiting enzyme in glycogen synthesis is glycogen synthase (GS). It is encoded by two genes, GYS1, expressed in muscle (muscle glycogen synthase, MGS) and other tissues, and GYS2, primarily expressed in liver (liver glycogen synthase, LGS). Expression of GS and its activity have been widely studied in many tissues. To date, it is not clear which GS isoform is responsible for glycogen synthesis and the role of glycogen in testis. Using RT-PCR, Western blot and immunofluorescence, we have detected expression of MGS but not LGS in mice testis during development. We have also evaluated GS activity and glycogen storage at different days after birth and we show that both GS activity and levels of glycogen are higher during the first days of development. Using RT-PCR, we have also shown that malin and laforin are expressed in testis, key enzymes for regulation of GS activity. These proteins form an active complex that regulates MGS by poly-ubiquitination in both Sertoli cell and male germ cell lines. In addition, PTG overexpression in male germ cell line triggered apoptosis by caspase3 activation, proposing a proapoptotic role of glycogen in testis. These findings suggest that GS activity and glycogen synthesis in testis could be regulated and a disruption of this process may be responsible for the apoptosis and degeneration of seminiferous tubules and possible cause of infertility.

Abstract: La planta Hevea brasiliensis se utiliza ampliamente en la industria como fuente de extracción de caucho, un elemento empleado en diversas áreas comerciales y médicas. Los estudios inmunológicos de esta especie indican que es una fuente alergénica importante, que puede provocar sensibilización y alergia. Se han identificado diferentes componentes alergénicos de esta planta, con diversas propiedades inmunitarias y bioquímicas, y estudiado más de diez tipos diferentes de alérgenos, cada uno con distinta capacidad de inducir síntomas alérgicos. En esta revisión informamos los avances actuales en el estudio de Hevea brasiliensis.


Resumen: Hevea brasiliensis, a plant species used extensively for rubber extraction, is a common allergenic source that can cause sensitization and allergic reactions. Recent immunological studies have characterized various allergenic components of Hevea brasiliensis that possess diverse immune and biochemical properties. Over ten types of allergens have been identified, each with varying capacities to induce allergic symptoms. This review presents the current advances in the study of this allergenic source.

Garlic (Allium sativum) contains secondary compounds that are known to modify rumen fermentation parameters and decrease methane (CH4) emissions. The objective was to evaluate the effects of increasing the inclusion levels and processing methods of garlic on in vitro fermentation and CH4 production. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with a 2 × 3 × 2 + 1 factorial arrangement, where the main factors were the initial condition of garlic (intact or smashed), drying process (freeze-dried, oven-dried, or autoclaved), and garlic proportion in the diet (2.5 and 5%) and one control (without garlic supplementation). Incubations were conducted using corn silage and cotton-gin trash (80:20, respectively) as basal substrates on three different days. Final pH, the concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), total gas production, and CH4 concentration were determined after 24 h. Initial garlic condition or drying processing neither modify (p > 0.05) the in vitro fermentation nor the CH4 production. However, increasing garlic inclusion linearly increased (p < 0.05) IVOMD, the concentration of the total VFA, and the proportion of propionate. Also, the concentration of NH3-N and the proportion of acetate increased quadratically (p < 0.05) with greater garlic inclusions. Finally, garlic inclusion did not affect (p > 0.05) gas and CH4 production. In conclusion, increasing garlic levels, but not the processing methods, improved in vitro fermentation but did not modify CH4 emissions under in vitro conditions.

Epigenetic processes are radically altered in cancer cells. The altered epigenetic events may include histone post-translational modifications (PTMs), DNA modifications, and/or alterations in the levels and modifications of chromatin modifying enzymes and chromatin remodelers. With changes in gene programming are changes in the genomic distribution of histone PTMs. Genes that are poised or transcriptionally active have histone H3 trimethylated lysine 4 (H3K4me3) located at the transcription start site and at the 5' end of the gene. However, a small population of genes that are involved in cell identity or cancer cell properties have a broad H3K4me3 domain that may stretch for several kilobases through the coding region of the gene. Each cancer cell type appears to mark a select set of cancer-related genes in this manner. In this study, we determined which genes were differentially marked with the broad H3K4me3 domain in normal-like (MCF10A), luminal-type breast cancer (MCF7), and triple-negative breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) cells. We also determined whether histone H3 acetylated lysine 4 (H3K4ac), also a mark of active promoters, had a broad domain configuration. We applied two peak callers (MACS2, PeakRanger) to analyze H3K4me3 and H3K4ac chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-Seq) data. We identified genes with a broad H3K4me3 and/or H3K4ac domain specific to each cell line and show that the genes have critical roles in the breast cancer subtypes. Furthermore, we show that H3K4ac marks enhancers. The identified genes with the broad H3K4me3/H3K4ac domain have been targeted in clinical and pre-clinical studies including therapeutic treatments of breast cancer.

Treatment of serum-starved quiescent human cells with fetal bovine serum (FBS), epidermal growth factor (EGF), or the phorbol ester (12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate, TPA) activates the RAS-MAPK pathway which initiates a transcriptional program which drives cells toward proliferation. Stimulation of the RAS-MAPK pathway activates mitogen- and stress-activated kinases (MSK) 1 and 2, which phosphorylate histone H3 at S10 (H3S10ph) or S28 (H3S28ph) (nucleosomal response) located at the regulatory regions of immediate-early genes, setting in motion a series of chromatin remodeling events that result in transcription initiation. To investigate immediate-early genes regulated by the MSK, we have completed transcriptome analyses (RNA sequencing) of human normal fibroblast cells (CCD-1070Sk) stimulated with EGF or TPA ± H89, a potent MSK/PKA inhibitor. The induction of many immediate-early genes was independent of MSK activity. However, the induction of immediate-early genes attenuated with H89 also had reduced induction with the PKA inhibitor, Rp-cAMPS. Several EGF-induced genes, coding for transcriptional repressors, were further upregulated with H89 but not with Rp-cAMPS, suggesting a role for MSK in modulating the induction level of these genes.

Transcriptionally active chromatin is marked by tri-methylation of histone H3 at lysine 4 (H3K4me3) located after first exons and around transcription start sites. This epigenetic mark is typically restricted to narrow regions at the 5`end of the gene body, though a small subset of genes have a broad H3K4me3 domain which extensively covers the coding region. Although most studies focus on the H3K4me3 mark, the broad H3K4me3 domain is associated with a plethora of histone modifications (e.g., H3 acetylated at K27) and is therein termed broad epigenetic domain. Genes marked with the broad epigenetic domain are involved in cell identity and essential cell functions and have clinical potential as biomarkers for patient stratification. Reducing expression of genes with the broad epigenetic domain may increase the metastatic potential of cancer cells. Enhancers and super-enhancers interact with the broad epigenetic domain marked genes forming a hub of interactions involving nucleosome-depleted regions. Together, the regulatory elements coalesce with transcription factors, chromatin modifying/remodeling enzymes, coactivators, and the Mediator and/or Integrator complex into a transcription factory which may be analogous to a liquid-liquid phase-separated condensate. The broad epigenetic domain has a dynamic chromatin structure which supports frequent transcription bursts. In this review, we present the current knowledge of broad epigenetic domains.

Eloísa Díaz' hospital, located in the municipality of La Florida and city of Santiago, Chile, opened its doors in 2014, and has integrated a humanistic model of care called the "Safe Model of Personalized Childbirth" since 2016. With around 3,000 births per year, it has been recognized as an example of excellence in maternity care in the country. The COVID-19 outbreak presented a big challenge to this Maternity: to maintain its quality of care standards despite the health crisis. This article presents the Maternity's responses to the pandemic from March to July 2020, describing the strategies that were deployed and the obstetric outcomes achieved. Semi-structured interviews with midwives and OB-GYNs, and a retrospective review of the childbirth standards of care and outcomes of the 55 women who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, were carried out. The results show how the Maternity's staff responded in order to avoid a significant negative impact on the rights of women and newborns. Protocols to reestablish the companion during labor and childbirth and skin-to-skin contact, which were suspended for almost three weeks at the beginning of the outbreak, and the creation of an Instagram account to communicate with the external community were some of the measures taken. After some initial weeks of adjustment, the standards of care for all women, included for those diagnosed with COVID-19, were reestablished almost to pre-pandemic levels. This case shows that quality of care can be maintained and the rights of women and newborns can be respected during health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMEN

The mitogen- and stress-activated protein kinases activated by the extracellular-signal-regulated kinase 1/2 and/or stress-activated protein kinase 2/p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways are recruited to the regulatory region of a subset of genes termed immediate-early genes, often leading to their induction. These genes, many of which code for transcription factors, have been directly linked to the phenotypic events in carcinogenesis. In this paper, we focus on the mitogen- and stress-activated protein kinases; their discovery, activation, H3 phosphorylation and recent discoveries in their roles in cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Brain computer interface is an emerging technology to treat the sequelae of stroke. The purpose of this study was to explore the motor imagery related desynchronization of sensorimotor rhythms of stroke patients and to assess the efficacy of an upper limb neurorehabilitation therapy based on functional electrical stimulation controlled by a brain computer interface. METHODS: Eight severe chronic stroke patients were recruited. The study consisted of two stages: screening and therapy. During screening, the ability of patients to desynchronize the contralateral oscillatory sensorimotor rhythms by motor imagery of the most affected hand was assessed. In the second stage, a therapeutic intervention was performed. It involved 20 sessions where an electrical stimulator was activated when the patient's cerebral activity related to motor imagery was detected. The upper limb was assessed, before and after the intervention, by the Fugl-Meyer score (primary outcome). Spasticity, motor activity, range of movement and quality of life were also evaluated (secondary outcomes). RESULTS: Desynchronization was identified in all screened patients. Significant post-treatment improvement (p < 0.05) was detected in the primary outcome measure and in the majority of secondary outcome scores. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the proposed therapy could be beneficial in the neurorehabilitation of stroke individuals.

Background: Chemical composition analysis of urinary stones is a fundamental part of the metabolic workup of urolithiasis. Aim: To report the chemical composition of urinary stones using infrared spectroscopy. Material and Methods: The chemical composition of rinary stones recovered from 649 patients aged 1 to 97 years (68% males), were analyzed using a Perkin Elmer FTIR Spectrometer, Spectrum Two. Results: Calcium oxalate monohydrate was the most common composition found in 45% of cases, followed by mixed composition, which included three ammonium phosphate stones in 29% of cases. Pure uric acid composition was found in 16% of stones. Three cystine stones were detected. Conclusions: These findings do not differ from those found in developed countries.

Los trastornos depresivos y de ansiedad son más frecuentes en pacientes que se encuentran a la espera de un acto anestésico-quirúrgico. Estos se consideran factores de riesgo de complicaciones posoperatorias de allí el interés de detectarlos en la consulta preoperatoria. El objetivo del trabajo fue determinar la frecuencia de ansiedad y depresión en pacientes pre-quirúrgicos en el Hospital de Clínicas utilizando la Escala de Ansiedad y Depresión Hospitalaria (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) validada en español mediante un estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal. Se realizó una encuesta a una muestra tomada al azar, de pacientes prequirúrgicos obtenida de la consulta externa o de las consultas provenientes de salas de internación quirúrgica del Hospital de Clínicas entre julio y septiembre de 2019. La prevalencia global de ansiedad y depresión fue de 44% y 14,5%, respectivamente. Un mayor nivel de depresión fue asociado al sexo femenino, no encontrándose asociación entre otras variables como edad, tipo de cirugía u hospitalización, y la mayor frecuencia de cualquiera de los trastornos. Se concluye que los niveles de ansiedad son relativamente elevados y, junto a la depresión, pueden ser detectados en la consulta preoperatoria de manera sencilla utilizando el instrumento propuesto.


The depressive and anxiety disorders are more frequent in patients who are waiting a surgical procedure. These are risk factors of postoperative complications. The objective of this work was to determine the incidence of anxiety and depression in the preoperative period at the University Hospital using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale validated in spanish through an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study. A socio-demographic characterization of patients was carried out and aspects related to imminent surgery were described. The study was conducted in a random sample of pre-surgical patients who attended an outpatient clinic or were hospitalized at the Hospital de Clínicas, between July and September 2019. The global incidence of anxiety and depression was 44% and 14.5% respectively. A mayor level of depression was observed in females, no other statistically significant evidence was found to support an association between the other variables (age, type of surgery, hospitalization) and the higher prevalence of any of the disorders. We concluded that the level of anxiety is high in our population and deserves to be detected, through the implementation of a simple instrument.

BACKGROUND: The day after COVID-19 quarantine started, we initiated patient care through Tele-dermatology. AIM: To report the experience of the implementation of Telemedicine in dermatology and to assess its impact on the number of dermatological visits compared with the pre-pandemic period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted between March 27th, 2020, and April 30th, 2020. All patients submitted clinical images of their skin condition via secure email before the telemedicine visit. All telemedicine visits were conducted using the Zoom video conferencing platform. Patient demographics and medical history were recorded. If the dermatologist was unable to reach a diagnosis, the patient was sent for an in-person visit, skin biopsy, or additional laboratory workup. RESULTS: We recorded 1,357 Tele dermatology visits from 1,222 patients aged 29 ± 18 years (38% males). Visits increased from 104 to 298 from the first to the last week, corresponding to 17% of the patient volume seen before the pandemic (1,709 in-person patients/week). A preliminary diagnosis was made in 95% of cases. Ninety percent of patients sent photos. Fifty eight percent of cases were chronic diseases, and were classified as inflammatory in 68%, infectious in 15%, neoplastic/tumoral in 7%, or other conditions in 11%. Less than 1% of these visits were COVID-19 related. CONCLUSIONS: In this prospective study of Tele-dermatology lasting five weeks, a preliminary diagnosis could be made in approximately 95% of cases and in the first five weeks of implementation, a volume of consultations equivalent to 17% of those made in the pre-pandemic period was carried out. Therefore, Tele-dermatology can be implemented quickly and successfully in practices when healthcare access is limited.

El concepto de Teoría de la Mente (ToM, de su sigla en inglés) hace referencia a la capacidad de ponerse en el lugar de la otra persona y ser así capaz de interpretar creencias, deseos e intenciones de otros. El propósito de esta investigación fue determinar el tipo de relación entre la adquisición de la forma del lenguaje y el desarrollo de la Teoría de la Mente en niños con Trastorno Específico del Lenguaje TEL tipo mixto y en niños con desarrollo típico, debido a que la literatura en relación con el tema es escasa y se focaliza principalmente en niños con autismo. La investigación se llevó a cabo mediante una metodología de tipo cuantitativa, un diseño no experimental-transversal y un alcance descriptivo y correlacional. Los instrumentos utilizados para evaluar el desarrollo de la estructura del lenguaje fueron el Test de Procesos de Simplificación Fonológica TEPROSIF-R y el Test de Comprensión Auditiva de E-Carrow TECAL; en tanto, para determinar el desarrollo de la ToM se utilizaron la prueba de Sally y Anne y la prueba de Mentalización. La muestra fue no probabilística y estuvo constituida por 28 niños con TEL mixto (grupo estudio) y 28 niños con desarrollo normal (grupo control) de 5 a 6 años, 11 meses. Los resultados indicaron que existe una relación entre el desarrollo de la teoría de la mente y el desarrollo de la estructura del lenguaje en su modalidad expresiva y comprensiva, principalmente en los niños con TEL mixto. A partir de estos resultados se puede concluir que es necesario intervenir desde el quehacer fonoaudiológico, además de las habilidades lingüísticas, aquellas habilidades asociadas con la Teoría de la Mente.


The concept of Theory of Mind ToM refers to the ability to put oneself in the other person's place and be able to interpret beliefs, desires and intentions of others. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between the development of the language form and the ToM in children with mixed Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and children with typical language development because the literature on the topic is limited and it focuses mainly on children with autism. The research was carried out using a quantitative methodology, a non-experimental-cross-sectional design, and a descriptive and correlational scope. The instrument used to determinate the development of the language structure were Test de Procesos de Simplificación Fonológica (TEPROSIF-R) and Test de Comprensión Auditiva de E-Carrow (TECAL); meanwhile, to evaluate the development of the ToM were used Sally and Anne Task and Mentalization test. The sample consisted on 28 children with SLI (study group) and 28 children with normal language development (control group) from 5 to 6,11 years old. The results indicate that there is a relationship between the development of the ToM and the development of the structure of language in its expressive and comprehensive modality, mainly in children with Mixed SLI. From these results, it is concluded that it is necessary to intervene not only linguistic abilities but also those abilities related to ToM from the speech therapist tasks.
