RESUMEN

In this paper, we report two cases of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) who were treated with distinct surgical approaches. In the first case, a 50-year-old woman presented with a mass on her right shoulder and underwent local excision with subsequent reconstruction using a deltopectoral flap. The second case was of a young female who presented with a giant protuberant DFSP on the anterior abdominal wall who was treated with wide local excision along with inlay mesh repair of the defect. Early excision and adjuvant radiotherapy facilitates a low recurrence rate while also improving the prognosis of the patients.

RESUMEN

Gastric volvulus (GV) and wandering spleen (WS) associated with eventration of diaphragm share a common pathological cause of absence or laxity of intraperitoneal ligaments. We herein report a rare case of a 13-year-old child presenting with an acute GV, WS, diaphragmatic eventration and an ectopic ascended kidney managed with a laparoscopic approach.

RESUMEN

Herpes simplex infection remains the third most common cause of esophagitis following gastric reflux disease and candida infection. This disease usually occurs in immunocompromised individuals; however, it has been frequently reported in healthy individuals. We present a case of a 39-year-old man who presented to the ER with symptoms unusual of herpes esophagitis. He was presumed to be immunocompromised due to uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and chronic alcohol use. Endoscopy revealed features in favor of candidiasis; however, histopathology displayed characteristic features of herpes infection. Herpes esophagitis should thus be suspected in immunocompromised patients with an independent underlying pathology and treated early with antiviral agents like acyclovir to prevent impending complications.

RESUMEN

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumor (OFMT) is a rare fibro-osseous neoplasm. We present a case highlighting the occurrence of an intracranial OFMT masquerading as meningioma on imaging in a 46-year-old gentleman. Brain imaging revealed an extra-axial calcified lesion along the left cerebellar convexity appearing hypointense on T1- and T2-weighted MRI sequences with no post-contrast enhancement, suggestive of a meningioma. An intraventricular colloid cyst was also noted. The lesion, which was presumed to be meningioma, and the colloid cyst were resected in two subsequent operative settings. Histopathological examination of the calcified lesion confirmed the findings of an OFMT. This report aims to inform the physician about intracranial OFMT mimicking meningioma on imaging. In addition, since multiple brain tumors are not very common, the surgeon should always have a suspicion should there be any heterogeneous and peculiar radiological and histopathological characteristics.
