RESUMEN

In 1997, it was predicted that an electronically excited atom or molecule placed in a loosely bound chemical system (such as a hydrogen-bonded or van-der-Waals-bonded cluster) could efficiently decay by transferring its excess energy to a neighbouring species that would then emit a low-energy electron. This intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD) process has since been shown to be a common phenomenon, raising questions about its role in DNA damage induced by ionizing radiation, in which low-energy electrons are known to play an important part. It was recently suggested that ICD can be triggered efficiently and site-selectively by resonantly core-exciting a target atom, which then transforms through Auger decay into an ionic species with sufficiently high excitation energy to permit ICD to occur. Here we show experimentally that resonant Auger decay can indeed trigger ICD in dimers of both molecular nitrogen and carbon monoxide. By using ion and electron momentum spectroscopy to measure simultaneously the charged species created in the resonant-Auger-driven ICD cascade, we find that ICD occurs in less time than the 20 femtoseconds it would take for individual molecules to undergo dissociation. Our experimental confirmation of this process and its efficiency may trigger renewed efforts to develop resonant X-ray excitation schemes for more localized and targeted cancer radiation therapy.

RESUMEN

We present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the electron dynamics and body-frame angular dependence of valence photo-single ionization of CF4 and subsequent dissociation into CF3+ and F. Ionization from a valence t2 orbital shows overlapping shape resonances close to threshold that couple to the same total symmetry, leading to striking changes in the photoelectron angular distributions when viewed in the body-frame.

RESUMEN

We investigate the single-photon double ionization of helium at photon energies of 440 and 800 eV. We observe doubly charged ions with close to zero momentum corresponding to electrons emitted back to back with equal energy. These slow ions are the unique fingerprint of an elusive quasifree photon double ionization mechanism predicted by Amusia et al. nearly four decades ago [J. Phys. B 8, 1248 (1975)]. It results from the nondipole part of the electromagnetic interaction. Our experimental data are supported by calculations performed using the convergent close-coupling and time-dependent close-coupling methods.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate a method for determining the full three-dimensional molecular-frame photoelectron angular distribution in polyatomic molecules using methane as a prototype. Simultaneous double Auger decay and subsequent dissociation allow measurement of the initial momentum vectors of the ionic fragments and the photoelectron in coincidence, allowing full orientation by observing a three-ion decay pathway, (H+, H+, CH2(+)). We find the striking result that at low photoelectron energies the molecule is effectively imaged by the focusing of photoelectrons along bond directions.

RESUMEN

We investigate interatomic Coulombic decay in NeKr dimers after neon inner-valence photoionization [Ne+(2s-1)] using a synchrotron light source. We measure with high energy resolution the two singly charged ions of the Coulomb-exploding dimer dication and the photoelectron in coincidence. By carefully tracing the post-collision interaction between the photoelectron and the emitted ICD electron we are able to probe the temporal evolution of the state as it decays. Although the ionizing light pulses are 80 picoseconds long, we determine the lifetime of the intermediate dimer cation state and visualize the contraction of the nuclear structure on the femtosecond time scale.

RESUMEN

All properties of molecules--from binding and excitation energies to their geometry--are determined by the highly correlated initial-state wavefunction of the electrons and nuclei. Details of these correlations can be revealed by studying the break-up of these systems into their constituents. The fragmentation might be initiated by the absorption of a single photon, by collision with a charged particle or by exposure to a strong laser pulse: if the interaction causing the excitation is sufficiently understood, the fragmentation process can then be used as a tool to investigate the bound initial state. The interaction and resulting fragment motions therefore pose formidable challenges to quantum theory. Here we report the coincident measurement of the momenta of both nuclei and both electrons from the single-photon-induced fragmentation of the deuterium molecule. The results reveal that the correlated motion of the electrons is strongly dependent on the inter-nuclear separation in the molecular ground state at the instant of photon absorption.

RESUMEN

Palliative medicine trainees are currently required to complete 36 months of core and non-core training, including a 6-month oncology module. There are presently few published data from palliative medicine trainees regarding the structure and appropriateness of their curriculum. The aim of this study was to evaluate skills related to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians essential learning objectives and the experiences gained by the individuals during their oncology training. An investigator-designed questionnaire was emailed out to all current Australasian trainees or first year consultants. A 45% response rate was achieved. Women were significantly more negative in their responses to the improvement of communication skills and the understanding of ethics. Chapter trainees rated improved leadership and future management skills lower than other respondents. Fifty-eight per cent of the respondents believed the oncology module should remain mandatory. Although valuable, a more tailored and flexible approach to this part of training should be considered.

RESUMEN

AIM: To determine if the City University Tritan Test is a useful addition to visual function assessment in rural communities in northern Nigeria. METHODS: The study was a cross sectional survey. The participants were 8394 people, aged 5 years and over, living in 37 rural communities, mesoendemic and nonendemic for onchocerciasis, in Kaduna State in northern Nigeria. The main outcome measures were the detection of a defect in blue-yellow colour vision by two criteria: (1) failure with the City University tritan screening plates; (2) failure with the City University grading plates to identify severe tritan defects. RESULTS: 91% of those aged 10 years and above could perform the test. Below this age, there were difficulties in comprehension. The test showed good inter- and intraobserver agreement. After adjustment for confounders the odds of failing the screening plates were significantly increased in the presence of optic atrophy or glaucoma (3.55 (2.48-5.08) and 15.9 (4.22-60.2) respectively). There was a greater increase in the adjusted odds of failing the grading plates in the presence of optic atrophy or glaucoma (5.30 (2.97-9.45) and 8.87 (1.61-48.7) respectively). Cataract had a smaller effect on the screening plates, adjusted odds 1.63 (0.95-2.80). CONCLUSION: Blue-yellow colour vision testing is a useful addition to visual function assessment in those aged 10 years and above in rural northern Nigeria, particularly in the detection of optic nerve disease.

RESUMEN

STUDY DESIGN: Case report of a lumbar extradural solitary fibrous tumor. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical manifestations and successful treatment of a patient with solitary fibrous tumor of the lumbar spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Solitary fibrous tumor usually occurs on the pleura but has been described in a growing number of sites. Although this is the first case in a lumbar extradural location, clinicians should be aware of the many guises in which this entity appears. Most cases are benign and cure is effected by surgical extirpation. METHODS: The diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of a patient with a lumbar extradural solitary fibrous tumor are reviewed. RESULTS: A patient showing signs of myeloradiculopathy was found, by means of magnetic resonance imaging, to have an intensely enhancing extradural lesion in the region of L1. Excision biopsy revealed features of a solitary fibrous tumor. The patient made a rapid, complete recovery. CONCLUSIONS: Solitary fibrous tumor has protean clinical manifestations and should be be considered in the differential diagnosis of intraspinal enhancing lesions on either side of the dura.

RESUMEN

The post-thaw survival and fertility of ram spermatozoa frozen in pellets, 0.25- and 0.5-ml PVC straws, and 0.25-ml minitubes were examined. In 5 experiments, a freezing height of 6 cm above the level of liquid nitrogen was optimal for 0.25- and 0.5-ml straws, whereas 4 cm was best for the 0.25-ml minitubes. Post-thaw motility of spermatozoa was lower for semen frozen in straws and minitubes than in pellets (Experiment 1: 43.7 vs 53.4%, P < 0.001), but after freezing was better in 0.5-ml straws and 0.25-ml minitubes than in 0.25-ml straws (Experiment 1: 44.9 vs 41.3%, P < 0.05; Experiment 2: 49.6 vs 46.8%, P < 0.01). Sperm motility was also better for 1:8 (semen:diluent) pre-freezing dilution rate (50.5%) than for 1:4 (45.6%, P < 0.01) and 1:2 (39.8%, P < 0.001) but not the 1:16 (49.5%) dilution rate. Dry ice was a better freezing medium than liquid nitrogen vapor (49.2 vs 46.9% motile spermatozoa, P < 0.001). The post-thaw motility of spermatozoa was similar for the three freezing packages if the semen was loaded at 5 degrees C, but motility was poorer for semen loaded into 0.25-ml straws than 0.25-ml minitubes at 30 degrees C (P < 0.05). In a fertility test, pregnancy rates were influenced by rams (3 rams, P < 0.05) and freezing package (pellets vs 0.25-ml minitube vs 0.25-ml straw vs 0.5-ml straw, P < 0.05) but not freezing medium (liquid nitrogen vapor vs dry ice). More ewes were pregnant after insemination with pellet-frozen semen (106/150, 71%) than with semen frozen in 0.25-ml straws (85/150, 57%; P < 0.05) and in 0.5-ml straws (83/150, 55%; P < 0.01) but not minitubes (98/150, 65%). It was concluded that minitubes provide a useful alternative to pellets as a storage package for ram spermatozoa, allowing for individual dose identification and easier storage while maintaining a fertility rate indistinguishable from that obtained with pellet-frozen semen.

RESUMEN

Paragangliomas rarely present as spine tumours. The correct diagnosis is generally not suspected pre-operatively and initial imaging is often non-specific. A 36-year-old man with low back pain, and progressive leg numbness and weakness, was found to have an expansile intradural extramedullary spinal tumour on radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging. Surgery revealed a paraganglioma. The features of spinal paraganglioma and differential diagnosis of intradural extramedullary tumours are discussed.

RESUMEN

An ion-momentum spectrometer is used to study the dissociative dynamics of electron attachment to molecules. A skimmed, supersonic gas jet is crossed with a pulsed beam of low-energy electrons, and the resulting negative ions are extracted toward a time- and position-sensitive detector. Calculations of the momentum in three dimensions may be used to determine the angular dependence of dissociative attachment as well as the energetics of the reaction.
