We proposed a half-wall structure in the in-plane switching (IPS) configuration of the nanoencapsulated liquid crystal (LC) display for reducing a driving voltage. The IPS electrodes were fabricated on top of the half-walls to enhance electric field strength through the whole LC layer. In addition, we demonstrated a self-masking process for the half-wall structure and the IPS electrodes without any additional mask-aligning process.

The direct emission of circularly polarized (CP) light improves the efficiency of an organic light-emitting diode and characterizes the secondary structure of proteins. In most cases, CP light is generated from a luminescent layer containing chiral characteristics, thereby generating only one kind of CP light in an entire device. Here, we propose direct CP light emissions using a twisted achiral conjugate polymer without any chiral dopant as an emitting layer (EML). The twisted structure is induced in the mesogenic conjugate polymer due to its elasticity by applying different alignment directions to its upper and lower interfaces. Furthermore, we demonstrate the simultaneous emission of orthogonal CP light in a single luminescent device by patterning different alignment directions on the surfaces of the EML. The light source with multipolarization including the orthogonal CP states is applicable to many applications in biosensors and optical devices.

The concentrations of naturally occurring radioisotopes ((232)Th, (228)Th, (230)Th, (228)Ra, (226)Ra, and (40)K) in typical Korean foods were evaluated. The daily intakes of these radioisotopes were calculated by comparing concentrations in typical Korean foods and the daily consumption rates of these foods. Daily intakes were as follows: (232)Th, 0.00-0.23; (228)Th, 0.00-2.04; (230)Th, 0.00-0.26; (228)Ra, 0.02-2.73; (226)Ra, 0.01-4.37 mBq/day; and (40)K, 0.01-5.71 Bq/day. The total daily intake of the naturally occurring radioisotopes measured in this study from food was 39.46 Bq/day. The total annual internal dose resulting from ingestion of radioisotopes in food was 109.83 muSv/y, and the radioisotope with the highest daily intake was (40)K. These values were same level compiled in other countries.

An extremely high degree of circularly polarized photoluminescence (CPPL) and electroluminescence (CPEL) (dissymmetry factor values: |gPL | = 0.72 and |gEL | = 1.13) are generated from twisted stacking of achiral conjugated polymer induced by nonemitting chiral dopant of high helical twisting power for the first time. Using a theoretical analysis incorporating the Stokes parameter, the twisting angle and birefringence of the aligned conjugated polymer, and the degree of linear polarization in the emitted light are found to make a roughly equal contribution to the degree of CPEL as to the degree of CPPL. Moreover, it is also found that the location of the recombination zone within the emitting layer is a crucial parameter for determining the difference in the dissymmetry factor between CPEL and CPPL. This result is applied to an organic light-emitting display to improve the luminous efficiency by 60%.
RESUMEN
A nationwide radon survey was conducted to provide data on the annual average indoor radon concentration in Korean homes. This survey also provided data on the variation of radon concentration with season, house type, and building age. The arithmetic mean (AM) of annual radon concentration in Korean homes was 53.4 +/- 57.5 Bq m(-3). The indoor radon concentration showed a lognormal distribution with a geometric mean (GM) and its standard deviation (GSD) of 43.3 +/- 1.8 Bq m(-3). The radon concentrations in the traditional Korean-style houses were about two times higher than those in apartments and row houses. The average annual outdoor radon concentration was 23.3 Bq m(-3). The average annual effective dose to the general public from radon was 1.63 mSv y(-1).

Airborne radionuclides from the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in 2011 were measured in 12 regional monitoring stations in Korea. The Gangneung (GN) monitoring station located in a coastal region almost always has a higher radioactivity concentration of airborne radionuclides than any other station. The possible cause of this higher concentration was analysed in terms of the local meteorology and topography. The increase in surface concentrations of radionuclides at the GN region might be attributed to the downslope windstorm, temperature inversion and coupled sea breeze and mountain flows.

The pathway and radiological impact of the radioactive plume released at the Fukushima nuclear accident site on the Korean Peninsula has been studied. On March 28, 2011, only (131)I was first observed at all 12 regional monitoring stations in Korea, and the highest activity concentrations in aerosol were 3.12 mBq/m(3) for (131)I at Gunsan, 1.19 mBq/m(3) for (134)Cs and 1.25 mBq/m(3) for (137)Cs at Busan on April 7, 2011. These radionuclides were also detected in dry and wet deposition samples, while the significant increase of (131)I, (134)Cs and (137)Cs activity concentrations were not observed in seawater and marine biota samples.
