RESUMEN
Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are widely recognized as intriguing building blocks for high-performance electronics and catalysis owing to their unique width-dependent bandgap and ample lone pair electrons on both sides of GNR, respectively, over the graphene nanosheet counterpart. However, it remains challenging to mass-produce kilogram-scale GNRs to render their practical applications. More importantly, the ability to intercalate nanofillers of interest within GNR enables in-situ large-scale dispersion and retains structural stability and properties of nanofillers for enhanced energy conversion and storage. This, however, has yet to be largely explored. Herein, we report a rapid, low-cost freezing-rolling-capillary compression strategy to yield GNRs at a kilogram scale with tunable interlayer spacing for situating a set of functional nanomaterials for electrochemical energy conversion and storage. Specifically, GNRs are created by sequential freezing, rolling, and capillary compression of large-sized graphene oxide nanosheets in liquid nitrogen, followed by pyrolysis. The interlayer spacing of GNRs can be conveniently regulated by tuning the amount of nanofillers of different dimensions added. As such, heteroatoms; metal single atoms; and 0D, 1D, and 2D nanomaterials can be readily in-situ intercalated into the GNR matrix, producing a rich variety of functional nanofiller-dispersed GNR nanocomposites. They manifest promising performance in electrocatalysis, battery, and supercapacitor due to excellent electronic conductivity, catalytic activity, and structural stability of the resulting GNR nanocomposites. The freezing-rolling-capillary compression strategy is facile, robust, and generalizable. It renders the creation of versatile GNR-derived nanocomposites with adjustable interlay spacing of GNR, thereby underpinning future advances in electronics and clean energy applications.
RESUMEN
Wheat leaf rust (Lr), which is caused by Puccinia triticina Eriks. (Pt), is one of the most important wheat diseases affecting wheat production globally. Using resistant wheat cultivars is the most economical and environmentally friendly way to control leaf rust. The Italian wheat cultivar Libellula has demonstrated good resistance to Lr in field studies. To identify the genetic basis of Lr resistance in 'Libellula', 248 F6 recombinant inbred lines from the cross 'Libellula'/'Huixianhong' was phenotyped for Lr severity in seven environments: the 2014/2015, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, and 2018/2019 cropping seasons at Baoding, Hebei Province, and the 2016/2017, 2017/2018, and 2018/2019 crop seasons at Zhoukou, Henan Province. Bulked segregant analysis and simple sequence repeat markers were then used to identify the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for Lr adult-plant resistance in the population. Six QTLs were consequently detected and designated as QLr.hebau-1AL and QLr.hebau-1AS that were presumed to be new and QLr.hebau-1BL, QLr.hebau-3AL, QLr.hebau-4BL, and QLr.hebau-7DS that were identified at similar physical positions as previously reported QTLs. Based on chromosome positions and molecular marker tests, QLr.hebau-1BL and QLr.hebau-7DS share similar flanking markers with Lr46 and Lr34, respectively. Lr46 and Lr34 are race nonspecific adult plant resistance (APR) genes for leaf rust and stripe rust and powdery mildew. QLr.hebau-4BL showed multiple disease resistance to leaf rust, stripe rust, Fusarium head blight, and powdery mildew. The QTL identified in this study, as well as their closely linked markers, may potentially be used in marker-assisted selection in wheat breeding.

Leaf rust, caused by the fungal pathogen Puccinia triticina (Pt), is one of the major and dangerous diseases of wheat, and has caused serious yield loss of wheat worldwide. Here, we investigated adult-plant resistance (APR) to leaf rust in a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from 'Xinmai 26' and 'Zhoumai 22' over 3 years. Linkage mapping for APR to leaf rust revealed four quantitative trait loci (QTL) in this RIL population. Two QTL, QLr.hnau-2BS and QLr.hnau-3BS were contributed by 'Zhoumai22', whereas QLr.hnau-2DS and QLr.hnau-5AL were contributed by 'Xinmai 26'. The QLr.hnau-2BS covering a race-specific resistance gene Lr13 showed the most stable APR to leaf rust. Overexpression of Lr13 significantly increased APR to leaf rust. Interestingly, we found that a CNL(coiled coil-nucleotide-binding site-leucine-rich repeat)-like gene, TaCN, in QLr.hnau-2BS completely co-segregated with leaf rust resistance. The resistant haplotype TaCN-R possessed half the sequence of the coiled-coil domain of TaCN protein. Lr13 strongly interacted with TaCN-R, but did not interact with the full-length TaCN (TaCN-S). In addition, TaCN-R was significantly induced after Pt inoculation and changed the sub-cellular localization of Lr13 after interaction. Therefore, we hypothesized that TaCN-R mediated leaf rust resistance possibly by interacting with Lr13. This study provides important QTL for APR to leaf rust, and new insights into understanding how a CNL gene modulates disease resistance in common wheat.

KEY MESSAGE: A genome-wide association analysis identified diverse loci for seedling and adult plant resistance to leaf rust and stripe rust. KASP markers were developed and validated for marker-assisted selection. Wheat leaf rust and stripe rust cause significant losses in many wheat producing regions worldwide. The objective of this study was to identify chromosome regions conferring resistance to both leaf rust and stripe rust at the seedling and adult plant stages. A diversity panel of 268 wheat lines, including 207 accessions from different wheat growing regions in China, and 61 accessions from foreign countries, were evaluated for leaf rust response at seedling stage using eight Chinese Puccinia triticina pathotypes, and also tested for leaf rust and stripe rust at adult plant stage in multiple field environments. The panel was genotyped with the Wheat 90 K Illumina iSelect SNP array. Genome-wide association mapping (GWAS) was performed using the mixed linear model (MLM). Twenty-two resistance loci including the known Lr genes, Lr1, Lr26, Lr3ka, LrZH22, and 18 potentially new loci were identified associated with seedling resistance, explaining 4.6 to 25.2% of the phenotypic variance. Twenty-two and 23 adult plant resistance (APR) QTL associated with leaf and stripe rust, respectively, were identified at adult stage, explaining 4.2-11.5% and 4.4-9.7% of the phenotypic variance. Among them, QLr-2BS was the potentially most valuable all-stage resistance gene. Seven and six consistent APR QTL were identified in multiple environments including best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) data, respectively. Comparison with previously mapped resistance loci indicated that three of the seven leaf rust resistance APR QTL, and two of the six stripe rust resistance APR QTL were new. Four potentially pleiotropic APR QTL, including Lr46/Yr29, QLr-2AL.1/QYr-2AL.1, QLr-2AL.2/QYr-2AL.2, and QLr-5BL/QYr-5BL.1, were identified. Twelve associated SNPs were converted into kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) markers and verified in bi-parental populations. The study reports genetic loci conferring resistance to both diseases, and the closely linked markers should be applicable for marker-assisted wheat breeding.

Stripe rust and leaf rust cause wheat yield losses of up to 70% worldwide. The employment of resistant cultivars is the major method to reduce losses from these diseases. The objective of this study was to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) for stripe rust and leaf rust resistance in 150 F6 recombinant inbred lines (RIL) derived from a cross between Mianyang351-15 and Zhengzhou 5389. Both parents and the RIL population were genotyped with the Wheat55K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array and simple sequence repeat markers, and phenotyped for stripe rust severity at Mianyang in Sichuan Province and Baoding in Hebei Province, and for leaf rust severity at Zhoukou in Henan Province and at Baoding in 2014 to 2017 cropping seasons. Seven and four QTL all contributed from Mianyang351-15 were identified for resistance to stripe rust and leaf rust, respectively. Four of these QTL on chromosomes 1BL, 2AS, 2DS, and 7BL conferred resistance to both stripe rust and leaf rust. The QTL on 1BL, 2AS, and 7BL were identified as Lr46/Yr29, Lr37/Yr17, and Lr68, respectively. QYr.hbau-2DS/QLr.hbau-2DS was detected at similar positions to previously reported loci. QYr.hbau-1DL, QYr.hbau-3AS, and QYr.hbau-3DL are likely to be new. Combined effects of QTL in the RIL population indicated RIL combining all QTL had the highest resistance level compared with those of lower numbers or no QTL. These QTL, with their closely linked SNP markers, are applicable for marker-assisted breeding and candidate gene discovery.

Wheat leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina (Pt), is a widespread disease of bread wheat worldwide. In the present study, 50 wheat cultivars from Ethiopia and 34 differential lines, mostly near-isogenic lines (NILs) in the background of Thatcher with known resistance genes to leaf rust (Lr), were tested with 14 Pt races in the greenhouse to postulate Lr genes at the seedling stage. Field experiments were also conducted to identify adult plant responses to leaf rust in Baoding in the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 growing seasons and in Zhoukou in the 2018-2019 growing season. Thirteen Lr genes (Lr1, Lr18, Lr3ka, Lr15, Lr26, Lr20, Lr14a, Lr30, Lr2a, Lr11, Lr34, Lr46, and Lr68) either singly or in combination were found in 39 cultivars. Known Lr genes were not present in the remaining 11 cultivars. Lr1 and Lr46, each in 13 cultivars, and Lr34 in 12 cultivars were the most commonly identified resistance genes. Less frequently identified genes included Lr26 (five cultivars); Lr30 and Lr18 (each present in four cultivars); Lr15, Lr3ka, and Lr2a (each identified in three cultivars); and Lr68 (two cultivars). Evidence for the existence of Lr11, Lr20, and Lr14a (each in one cultivar) was also obtained. Twenty-one cultivars were found to have slow rusting resistance to leaf rust in the field tests. The results should be valuable for cultivar selection with combinations of effective Lr genes and used in breeding new cultivars with improved resistance to leaf rust in Ethiopia and China.

We disclose novel photovoltaic device physics and present details of device mechanisms by investigating perovskite solar cells (PSCs) incorporating Cu9S5@SiO2 supraparticles (SUPs) into Spiro-OMeTAD based hole transport layers (HTLs). High quality colloidal Cu9S5 nanocrystals (NCs) were prepared using a hot-injection approach. Multiple Cu9S5 NCs were further embedded in silica to construct a Cu9S5@SiO2 SUP. Cu9S5@SiO2 SUPs were blended into Spiro-OMeTAD based HTLs with different weight ratios. Theoretical and experimental results show that the very strong light scattering or reflecting properties of Cu9S5@SiO2 SUPs blended in the PSC device in a proper proportion distribute to increase the light energy trapped within the device, leading to significant enhancement of light absorption in the active layer. Additionally, the incorporated Cu9S5@SiO2 SUPs can also promote the electrical conductivity and hole-transport capacity of the HTL. Significantly larger conductivity and higher hole injection efficiency were demonstrated in the HTM with the optimal weight ratios of Cu9S5@SiO2 SUPs. As a result, efficient Cu9S5 SUPs based PSC devices were obtained with average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.21% at an optimal weight ratio of Cu9S5 SUPs. Compared with PSC solar cells without Cu9S5@SiO2 SUPs (of which the average PCE is 14.38%), a remarkable enhancement over 26% in average PCE was achieved. This study provides an innovative approach to efficiently promote the performance of PSC devices by employing optically stable, low-cost and green p-type semiconductor SUPs.

Wheat leaf rust (caused by Puccinia triticina) and stripe rust (caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici) cause large production losses in many regions of the world. The objective of this study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for resistance to leaf rust and stripe rust in a recombinant inbred line population derived from a cross between wheat cultivars SW 8588 and Thatcher. The population and parents were genotyped with the Wheat 55K SNP Array and SSR markers and phenotyped for leaf rust severity at Zhoukou in Henan Province and Baoding in Hebei Province. Stripe rust responses were also evaluated at Chengdu in Sichuan Province, and at Baoding. Seven and six QTL were detected for resistance to leaf rust and stripe rust, respectively. Four QTL on chromosomes 1BL, 2AS, 5AL, and 7BL conferred resistance to both rusts. The QTL on 1BL and 2AS were identified as Lr46/Yr29 and Lr37/Yr17, respectively. QLr.hebau-2DS from Thatcher, identified as Lr22b that was previously thought to be ineffective in China, contributed a large effect for leaf rust resistance. QLr.hebau-5AL/QYr.hebau-5AL, QLr.hebau-3BL, QLr.hebau-6DS, QYr.hebau-4BS, and QYr.hebau-6DS are likely to be new QTL, but require further validation. Kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) markers for QLr.hebau-2DS and QLr.hebau-5AL/QYr.hebau-5AL were successfully developed and validated in a diverse wheat panel from Sichuan Province, indicating their usefulness under different genetic backgrounds. These QTL and their closely linked SNP and SSR markers will be useful for fine mapping, candidate gene discovery, and marker-assisted selection in breeding for durable resistance to both leaf and stripe rusts.

Puccinia triticina (Pt), the causal agent of wheat leaf rust, is one of the most destructive fungal pathogens threatening global wheat cultivations. The rational utilization of leaf rust resistance (Lr) genes is still the most efficient method for the control of such diseases. The Lr47 gene introgressed from chromosome 7S of Aegilops speltoides still showed high resistance to the majority of Pt races collected in China. However, the Lr47 gene has not been cloned yet, and the regulatory network of the Lr47-mediated resistance has not been explored. In the present investigation, transcriptome analysis was applied on RNA samples from three different wheat lines ("Yecora Rojo", "UC1037", and "White Yecora") carrying the Lr47 gene three days post-inoculation with the epidemic Pt race THTT. A comparison between Pt-inoculated and water-inoculated "Lr47-Yecora Rojo" lines revealed a total number of 863 upregulated (q-value < 0.05 and log2foldchange > 1) and 418 downregulated (q-value < 0.05 and log2foldchange < -1) genes. Specifically, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) located on chromosomes 7AS, 7BS, and 7DS were identified, ten of which encoded receptor-like kinases (RLKs). The expression patterns of these RLK genes were further determined by a time-scale qRT-PCR assay. Moreover, heatmaps for the expression profiles of pathogenesis-related (PR) genes and several transcription factor gene families were generated. Using a transcriptomic approach, we initially profiled the transcriptional changes associated with the Lr47-mediated resistance. The identified DEGs, particularly those genes encoding RLKs, might serve as valuable genetic resources for the improvement of wheat resistance to Pt.

Puccinia triticina Eriks. (Pt), the causal agent of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) leaf rust, is the most widespread disease of common wheat worldwide. In the present study, 83 wheat cultivars from three provinces of China and 36 tester lines with known leaf rust resistance (Lr) genes were inoculated in the greenhouse with 18 Pt pathotypes to identify seedling effective Lr genes. Field tests were also performed to characterize slow leaf rusting responses at the adult plant growth stage in Baoding and Zhoukou in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 cropping seasons. Twelve Lr genes, viz. Lr1, Lr26, Lr3ka, Lr11, Lr10, Lr2b, Lr13, Lr21, Lr34, Lr37, Lr44, and Lr46 either singly or in combination were identified in 41 cultivars. Known Lr genes were not detected in the remaining 42 cultivars. The most commonly identified resistance genes were Lr26 (20 cultivars), Lr46 (18 cultivars), and Lr1 (eight cultivars). Less frequently detected genes included Lr13, Lr34, and Lr37 (each present in four cultivars), Lr10 (three cultivars), and Lr3ka and Lr44 (each in two cultivars). Evidence for the presence of genes Lr11, Lr2b, and Lr21 (each in one cultivar) was also obtained. Seventeen cultivars were found to have slow rusting resistance in both field growing seasons.

KEY MESSAGE: Six QTL for adult plant resistance to leaf rust, including two QTL effective against additional diseases, were identified in a RIL population derived from a cross between Shanghai 3/Catbird and Naxos. Leaf rust is an important wheat disease and utilization of adult-plant resistance (APR) may be the best approach to achieve long-term protection from the disease. The CIMMYT spring wheat line Shanghai 3/Catbird (SHA3/CBRD) showed a high level of APR to Chinese Puccinia triticina pathotypes in the field. To identify APR genes in this line, a mapping population of 164 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) was developed from a cross of this line and Naxos, a moderately susceptible German cultivar. The RILs were evaluated for final disease severity (FDS) at Baoding, Hebei province, and Zhoukou, Henan province, in the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 cropping seasons. QTL analysis detected one major QTL derived from SHA3/CBRD on chromosome 2BS explaining from 15 to 37 % of the phenotypic variance across environments. In addition one minor resistance QTL on chromosome 1AL from SHA3/CBRD and four minor QTL from Naxos on chromosomes 2DL, 5B, 7BS, and 7DS were also detected. SHA3/CBRD also possessed seedling resistance gene Lr26, and Naxos contained Lr1 based on gene postulation following tests with an array of P. triticina pathotypes and molecular marker assays. These seedling resistance and APR genes and their closely linked molecular markers are potentially useful for improving leaf rust resistance in wheat breeding programs.

Fusarium crown rot (FCR), primarily caused by Fusarium pseudograminearum, has emerged as a new threat to wheat production and quality in North China. Genetic enhancement of wheat resistance to FCR remains the most effective approach for disease control. In this study, we phenotyped 435 Chinese wheat cultivars through FCR inoculation at the seedling stage in a greenhouse. Our findings revealed that only approximately 10.8% of the wheat germplasms displayed moderate or high resistance to FCR. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) using high-density 660K SNP led to the discovery of a novel quantitative trait locus on the long arm of chromosome 3B, designated as Qfcr.hebau-3BL. A total of 12 significantly associated SNPs were closely clustered within a 1.05 Mb physical interval. SNP-based molecular markers were developed to facilitate the practical application of Qfcr.hebau-3BL. Among the five candidate FCR resistance genes within the Qfcr.hebau-3BL, we focused on TraesCS3B02G307700, which encodes a protein kinase, due to its expression pattern. Functional validation revealed two transcripts, TaSTK1.1 and TaSTK1.2, with opposing roles in plant resistance to fungal disease. These findings provide insights into the genetic basis of FCR resistance in wheat and offer valuable resources for breeding resistant varieties.
RESUMEN
Neijiang 977671 and 19 near-isogenic lines with known leaf rust resistance genes were inoculated with 12 pathotypes of Puccinia triticina for postulation of leaf rust resistance genes effective at the seedling stage. The reaction pattern of Neijiang 977671 differed from those of the lines with known leaf rust resistance genes used in the test, indicating that Neijiang 977671 may carry a new leaf rust resistance gene(s). With the objective of identifying and mapping the new gene for resistance to leaf rust, F1 and F2 plants, and F2:3 families, from Neijiang 977671 × Zhengzhou 5389 (susceptible) were inoculated with Chinese P. triticina pathotype FHNQ in the greenhouse. Results from the F2 and F2:3 populations indicated that a single dominant gene, temporarily designated LrNJ97, conferred resistance. In order to identify other possible genes in Neijiang 977671 other eight P. triticina pathotypes avirulent on Neijiang 977671 were used to inoculate 25 F2:3 families. The results showed that at least three leaf rust resistance genes were deduced in Neijiang 977671. Bulked segregant analysis was performed on equal amounts of genomic DNA from 20 resistant and 20 susceptible F2 plants. SSR markers polymorphic between the resistant and susceptible bulks were used to analyze the F2:3 families. LrNJ97 was linked to five SSR loci on chromosome 2BL. The two closest flanking SSR loci were Xwmc317 and Xbarc159 at genetic distances of 4.2 and 2.2 cM, respectively. At present two designated genes (Lr50 and Lr58) are located on chromosome 2BL. In the seedling tests, the reaction pattern of LrNJ97 was different from that of Lr50. Lr50 and Lr58 were derived from T. armeniacum and Ae. triuncialis, respectively, whereas according to the pedigree of Neijiang 977671 LrNJ97 is from common wheat. Although seeds of lines with Lr58 were not available, it was concluded that LrNJ97 is likely to be a new leaf rust resistance gene.

Zhou 8425B, possessing the leaf rust resistance gene LrZH84, is an elite wheat (Triticum aestivum) parental line in the Yellow-Huai Valley region of China. In the present study, 2,086 F(2) plants derived from Zhou 8425B/Chinese Spring were used for fine mapping of LrZH84 with expressed sequence tag (EST) and sequence-tagged site (STS) markers. Seventy inter-simple sequence repeat EST and STS markers on 1BL were used to screen the two parents and resistant and susceptible bulks; those polymorphic were used to analyze the entire F(2) population. Three EST markers (BF474863, BE497107, and CD373538) were closely linked to LrZH84, with genetic distances of 0.7, 0.7, and 1.7 cM, respectively. STS marker Hbsf-1 was developed from the sequences of polymerase chain reaction fragments amplified from EST marker BF474863. LrZH84 was 8.19 cM proximal to Lr44, but may be allelic to LrXi and LrG98 although they showed different reactions with some Puccinia triticina pathotypes.

Leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina Eriksson (Pt), is one of the most severe foliar diseases of wheat. Breeding for leaf rust resistance is a practical and sustainable method to control this devastating disease. Here, we report the identification of Lr47, a broadly effective leaf rust resistance gene introgressed into wheat from Aegilops speltoides. Lr47 encodes a coiled-coil nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat protein that is both necessary and sufficient to confer Pt resistance, as demonstrated by loss-of-function mutations and transgenic complementation. Lr47 introgression lines with no or reduced linkage drag are generated using the Pairing homoeologous1 mutation, and a diagnostic molecular marker for Lr47 is developed. The coiled-coil domain of the Lr47 protein is unable to induce cell death, nor does it have self-protein interaction. The cloning of Lr47 expands the number of leaf rust resistance genes that can be incorporated into multigene transgenic cassettes to control this devastating disease.

Stripe rust and leaf rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis Westend. f. sp. tritici Erikss. and P. triticina, respectively, are devastating fungal diseases of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Chinese wheat cultivar Bainong 64 has maintained acceptable adult-plant resistance (APR) to stripe rust, leaf rust and powdery mildew for more than 10 years. The aim of this study was to identify quantitative trait loci/locus (QTL) for resistance to the two rusts in a population of 179 doubled haploid (DH) lines derived from Bainong 64 × Jingshuang 16. The DH lines were planted in randomized complete blocks with three replicates at four locations. Stripe rust tests were conducted using a mixture of currently prevalent P. striiformis races, and leaf rust tests were performed with P. triticina race THTT. Leaf rust severities were scored two or three times, whereas maximum disease severities (MDS) were recorded for stripe rust. Using bulked segregant analysis (BSA) and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, five independent loci for APR to two rusts were detected. The QTL on chromosomes 1BL and 6BS contributed by Bainong 64 conferred resistance to both diseases. The loci identified on chromosomes 7AS and 4DL had minor effects on stripe rust response, whereas another locus, close to the centromere on chromosome 6BS, had a significant effect only on leaf rust response. The loci located on chromosomes 1BL and 4DL also had significant effects on powdery mildew response. These were located at the same positions as the Yr29/Lr46 and Yr46/Lr67 genes, respectively. The multiple disease resistance locus for APR on chromosome 6BS appears to be new. All three genes and their closely linked molecular markers could be used in breeding wheat cultivars with durable resistance to multiple diseases.

Leaf rust and stripe rust are important wheat diseases worldwide causing significant losses where susceptible varieties are grown. Resistant cultivars offer long-term control and reduce the use of hazardous chemicals, which can be detrimental to both human health and the environment. Land races have been a valuable resource for mining new genes for various abiotic and biotic stresses including wheat rusts. Afghan wheat landrace "KU3067" displayed high seedling infection type (IT) for leaf rust and low IT for stripe rust; however, it displayed high levels of field resistance for both rusts when tested for multiple seasons against the Mexican rust isolates. This study focused on identifying loci-conferring seedling resistance to stripe rust, and also loci-conferring adult plant resistance (APR) against the Mexican races of leaf rust and stripe rust. A backcrossed inbred line (BIL) population advanced to the BC1F5 generation derived from the cross of KU3067 and Apav (triple rust susceptible line) was used for both, inheritance and QTL mapping studies. The population and parents were genotyped with Diversity Arrays Technology-genotyping-by-sequencing (DArT-Seq) and phenotyped for leaf rust and stripe rust response at both seedling and adult plant stages during multiple seasons in Mexico with relevant pathotypes. Mapping results identified an all-stage resistance gene for stripe rust, temporarily designated as YrKU, on chromosome 7BL. In total, six QTL-conferring APR to leaf rust on 1AS, 2AL, 4DL, 6BL, 7AL, and 7BL, and four QTL for stripe rust resistance on 1BS, 2AL, 4DL, and 7BL were detected in the analyses. Among these, pleiotropic gene Lr67/Yr46 on 4DL with a significantly large effect is the first report in an Afghan landrace-conferring resistance to both leaf and stripe rusts. QLr.cim-7BL/YrKU showed pleiotropic resistance to both rusts and explained 7.5-17.2 and 12.6-19.3% of the phenotypic variance for leaf and stripe rusts, respectively. QYr.cim-1BS and QYr.cim-2AL detected in all stripe environments with phenotypic variance explained (PVE) 12.9-20.5 and 5.4-12.5%, and QLr.cim-6BL are likely to be new. These QTL and their closely linked markers will be useful for fine mapping and marker-assisted selection (MAS) in breeding for durable resistance to multiple rust diseases.
RESUMEN
Fast pyrolysis of corn stalk (CS) was performed by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and the product distribution was measured as a function of temperature, time, and catalyst. The types and yields of product compounds were influenced dramatically by temperature, while the duration of the reaction had little effect on the type of compound. Three primary components in the biomass interacted during pyrolysis. The maximum proportions of aldehydes (27.26%), furans (5.93%), and olefins (6.46%), and the minimum proportions of alcohols (0%) and carbohydrates (0.74%) were obtained over MCM-41. HZSM-5 improved the selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons while inhibiting acid formation. The proportion of N-compounds was maximal (23.39%) over ZrO2. ZnCl2 tended to generate the least amounts of ketones (2.02%), phenols (9.08%), and esters (2.16%), but the greatest amount of carbohydrates (37.31%). K2SO4 promoted the formation of acids, ketones, alcohols, and phenols, while reducing the production of N-compounds and aldehydes.

BACKGROUND: Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) is a subtropical fruit with attractive characteristic of white to creamy semitranslucent flesh and red color in pericap, but it was easily subjected to the infection of Peronophythora litchii and lost its market values. Experiments were conducted to understand the effect of [Carbamic acid, (1,2,3-thiadiazole-4-ylcarbonyl)-hexyl ester, CTE] on the growth of P. litchi and quality properties in litchi fruits during postharvest storage. RESULTS: In vitro experiments, CTE with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC, 5 mg/L) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC, 10 mg/L) were against the growth of P. litchi for 2 and 4 days, respectively, and SEM results showed that hyphae of P. litchii shrank, distorted and collapsed after CTE treatment. In vivo experiments, CTE treatment inhibited the increase of disease incidence, browning index, weight loss and PPO activity in non-P. litchii-inoculated fruits, meanwhile the treatment markedly inhibited the decrease of color characteristic (a*, b* and L*), anthocyanin content, phenolic contents, Vc content and POD activity, but TSS content was not significantly influenced during storage. In P. litchii-inoculated fruits, all these above mentioned parameters in CTE treated fruits were significantly higher than that in control fruits, but anthocyanin content, Vc, TSS and TA content did not have consistent differences between control and CTE treated fruits at the end of storage. CONCLUSION: CTE treatment reduced the disease incidence and browning index of litchi fruits, maintained the fruits quality and, thus, it could be an effective postharvest handling to extend the shelf life of litchi fruits during storage.
RESUMEN
Wheat leaf rust is an important disease worldwide. Growing resistant cultivars is an effective means to control the disease. In the present study, 244 recombinant inbred lines from Zhou 8425B/Chinese Spring cross were phenotyped for leaf rust severities during the 2011-2012, 2012-2013, 2013-2014, and 2014-2015 cropping seasons at Baoding, Hebei province, and 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 cropping seasons in Zhoukou, Henan province. The population was genotyped using the high-density Illumina iSelect 90K SNP assay and SSR markers. Inclusive composite interval mapping identified eight QTL, designated as QLr.hebau-2AL, QLr.hebau-2BS, QLr.hebau-3A, QLr.hebau-3BS, QLr.hebau-4AL, QLr.hebau-4B, QLr.hebau-5BL, and QLr.hebau-7DS, respectively. QLr.hebau-2BS, QLr.hebau-3A, QLr.hebau-3BS, and QLr.hebau-5BL were derived from Zhou 8425B, whereas the other four were from Chinese Spring. Three stable QTL on chromosomes 2BS, 4B and 7DS explained 7.5-10.6%, 5.5-24.4%, and 11.2-20.9% of the phenotypic variance, respectively. QLr.hebau-2BS in Zhou 8425B might be the same as LrZH22 in Zhoumai 22; QLr.hebau-4B might be the residual resistance of Lr12, and QLr.hebau-7DS is Lr34. QLr.hebau-2AL, QLr.hebau-3BS, QLr.hebau-4AL, and QLr.hebau-5BL are likely to be novel QTL for leaf rust. These QTL and their closely linked SNP and SSR markers can be used for fine mapping, candidate gene discovery, and marker-assisted selection in wheat breeding.
