RESUMEN

We report a high-energy, picosecond, mid-infrared (MIR) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), in which a length of hollow-core-fiber (HCF) is employed to enable operation at 1-MHz repetition rate in a compact cavity format. The OPO is synchronously pumped by an ytterbium-doped-fiber (YDF) master-oscillator-power-amplifier (MOPA) system, seeded by a 1040-nm gain-switched laser diode (GSLD). Using periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) as the nonlinear crystal, the OPO generates signal and idler beams with tunable wavelengths in the range of 1329-1641 nm and 2841-4790 nm, respectively. The OPO provides 137-ps pulses with a maximum signal energy of 10.05 µJ at 1600 nm and a maximum idler energy of 5.13 µJ at 2967 nm. This, to the best of our knowledge, represents the highest energy MIR pulses, as well as the highest total converted pulse energy (15.18 µJ), ever achieved from a fiber laser pumped picosecond OPO.

RESUMEN

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of joint disease, which is difficult to treat, but early standardized diagnosis and treatment can effectively alleviate the pain and symptoms of patients. Therefore, it is important to construct an effective tool to assist in the early diagnosis and evaluation of the therapeutic effect of OA. In this work, a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence-activated fluorescent probe, YB-1, was constructed for the evaluation of the diagnostic and therapeutic efficacy of OA via detection and imaging of the biomarker of ONOO- in inflammatory cells and mice osteoarthritis models. YB-1 exhibited high selectivity, high sensitivity, and a high ratio yield (I668/I0) fluorescence increasing (∼30 folds). Besides, YB-1 can be used effectively to image endogenous and exogenous ONOO- in living human chondrocytes cells (TC28a2), as well as to evaluate the effect of drug (Chrysosplenol D, CD) treatment in IL-1ß-induced inflammatory cells model. Interestingly, YB-1 was available for OONO- imaging analysis in the collagenase-induced mice OA models and assessment of the effect of CD treatment in mice OA models, with good results. Thus, the newly constructed YB-1 is a powerful molecular tool for the diagnosis and treatment of OA-related diseases.

RESUMEN

A compact, mid-infrared (MIR), synchronously pumped, fiber-feedback optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) is developed with tunable signal and idler wavelength ranges of 1472.0-1758.2 nm and 2559.1-3562.7 nm, respectively. A solid-core SMF-28 fiber and a hollow-core fiber (HCF) were used as the feedback fibers in order to compare the effect of their substantially different levels of nonlinearity. The OPO generates 1-MHz, 120-ps, MIR pulses with up to 1.50-µJ pulse energy and 11.7-kW peak power.

RESUMEN

We report a high-power single-mode mid-infrared (MIR) pulse delivery system via anti-resonant hollow-core fiber (HCF) with a record delivery distance of 108 m. Near-diffraction-limited MIR light was transmitted by HCFs at wavelengths of 3.12-3.58 µm using a tunable optical parametric oscillator (OPO) as the light source. The HCFs were purged beforehand with argon in order to remove or reduce loss due to parasitic gas absorption (HCl, CO2, etc.). The minimum fiber loss values were 0.05 and 0.24 dB/m at 3.4-3.6 µm and 4.5-4.6 µm, respectively, with the 4.5-4.6 µm loss figure representing, to the best of our knowledge, a new low loss record for a HCF in this spectral region. At a coupling efficiency of ∼70%, average powers of 592 mW and 133 mW were delivered through 5 m and 108 m of HCF, respectively. Assuming the 120-ps duration of the MIR pulses remained constant over the low-dispersion HCF (theoretical maximum: 0.4 ps/nm/km), the corresponding calculated peak powers were 4.9 kW and 1.1 kW.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to examine 1) the relationship between apathy and leisure activity participation in nursing home residents with Alzheimer disease (AD) and 2) the moderator effect of the severity of dementia on this relationship. Data were collected from 290 residents with AD using the Apathy Evaluation Scale-informant version (AES-I), Leisure Activities Questionnaire (LAQ), and Clinical Dementia Rating scale (CDR). The multiple linear regression model showed that leisure activity participation (ß=-0.452, p<0.001) was negatively associated with apathy, while the severity of dementia (ß=0.515, p<0.001) was positively associated with apathy. The severity of dementia moderated the effect of leisure activity participation on apathy (ß=-0.108, p=0.015). The results indicate that the effects of leisure activity participation on apathy diminish with the aggravation of AD. The severity of dementia should be considered when designing and delivering leisure activity interventions to manage apathy in nursing home residents with AD.

RESUMEN

We report an orientation-patterned gallium arsenide (OP-GaAs) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) offering a high degree of temporal flexibility with controllable pulse repetition rates from 100 MHz to 1 GHz and pulse durations from ∼95 ps to ∼1.1 ns. The maximum average power of 9.2-W signal (3.3 µm) and 4.5-W idler (4.9 µm) was obtained at a repetition rate of 100 MHz and a pulse duration of ∼95 ps, with a pump power of 34.3 W and at a slope efficiency of 45.4%. The corresponding total average output power of 13.7 W is the highest power achieved to date from an OP-GaAs OPO, to the best of our knowledge.

RESUMEN

We report a high-average-power mid-infrared picosecond (ps) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on orientation-patterned gallium arsenide (OP-GaAs), with wide wavelength tunability. The OP-GaAs OPO is synchronously pumped by a thulium-doped-fiber (TDF) master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA), seeded by a gain-switched laser diode. At a pump power of 35.3 W and a repetition rate of 100 MHz, a maximum OPO total average output power of 9.7 W (signal 5.7 W (0.60 kW peak power), idler 4.0 W (0.42 kW peak power)) is obtained at signal and idler wavelengths of 3093 nm and 5598 nm, and a thermally induced power roll-off is observed. To mitigate the thermal effects, an optical chopper is placed before the OPO to provide burst mode operation and a reduced thermal load. We achieved a linear growth in OPO output power over the full range of available pump powers in this instance confirming thermal effects as the origin of the roll-off observed under continuous pumping. We estimate the maximum peak powers of the signal and idler are estimated to be over 0.79 kW and 0.58 kW, respectively in this instance. A wide mid-infrared wavelength tuning range of 2895-3342 nm (signal) and 4935-6389 nm (idler) is demonstrated.

RESUMEN

This paper proposes a novel iteration Bayesian reweighed (IBR) algorithm to obtain accurate estimates of a measurement parameter that uses only a few noisy measurement data. The method is applied to optimize the frequency fluctuation in an optical carrier-based microwave interferometry (OCMI) system. The algorithm iteratively estimates the frequency of the S-parameter valley point by collecting training samples to rebalance the weights between prior samples, which reduces the impact of noise in the system. Simulation shows that the estimated result of this algorithm is closer to the true value than that of the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) using the same amount of measured data. Under the influence of system noise, this algorithm optimizes the frequency fluctuation of the S-parameter and reduces the impact of individual measured data. In this study, we applied the algorithm in the strain sensing experiment and compared it with the MLE. When axial strain changes 240 µÎµ, the IBR algorithm yields a deviation of 36 µÎµ, which is a significant reduction from 138 µÎµ (using the MLE method). Moreover, the average error rate decreases from 25% to 3% (with the MLE method), suggesting that the linear fitting degree of the estimated results and accuracy of the system are improved. Moreover, the algorithm has a wide range of applicability, for it can handle different application models in the OCMI system and the systems with frequency fluctuation problems.

RESUMEN

We report a gain-switched diode-seeded thulium doped fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) producing up to 295-kW picosecond pulses (35 ps) at a repetition rate of 1 MHz with a good beam quality (M2 ~1.3). A narrow-band, grating-based filter was incorporated within the amplifier chain to restrict the accumulation of nonlinear spectral broadening and counter-pumping of a short length of large-mode-area (LMA) fiber was used in the final stage amplifier to further reduce nonlinear effects. Finally, we generated watt-level >2.5-octave supercontinuum spanning from 750 nm to 5000 nm by using the MOPA output to pump an indium fluoride fiber.

RESUMEN

We report the second harmonic generation and fourth harmonic generation of the output from a short-pulsed (~ 80 ps) thulium-doped fiber laser, generating 976 and 488 nm wavelengths with high efficiency. With a narrow-linewidth (0.5 nm) pump at a power of 3.2 W, a second harmonic power of 2.4 W was generated at 976 nm with a conversion efficiency reaching 75%. For FHG, 690 mW of power at 488 nm was obtained from frequency doubling of 976 nm with a conversion efficiency of 30%.

RESUMEN

A multi-wavelength pumped thulium doped fiber amplifier is investigated to extend the spectral gain coverage of the amplifier in the 1.7-1.9µm wavelength range. Through the use of a combination of 791 nm, 1240 nm, and 1560 nm laser diode pumping, the amplifier gain can be improved significantly and overall gain bandwidth enhancement of ~47% as compared to single-wavelength pumping achieved. A nominal gain of 15 dB is achieved over a bandwidth of more than 250 nm spanning from 1700 to 1950 nm with a maximum gain of 29 dB and a noise figure of less than 5 dB.

RESUMEN

We investigate the operation of holmium-doped fibre amplifiers (HDFAs) in the 2.1 µm spectral region. For the first time we demonstrate a diode-pumped HDFA. This amplifier provides a peak gain of 25 dB at 2040 nm with a 15 dB gain window spanning the wavelength range 2030 - 2100 nm with an external noise figure (NF) of 4-6 dB. We also compare the operation of HDFAs when pumped at 1950 nm and 2008 nm. The 1950 nm pumped HDFA provides 41 dB peak gain at 2060 nm with 15 dB of gain spanning the wavelength range 2050 - 2120 nm and an external NF of 7-10 dB. By pumping at the longer wavelength of 2008 nm the gain bandwidth of the amplifier is shifted to longer wavelengths and using this architecture a HDFA was demonstrated with a peak gain of 39 dB at 2090 nm and 15 dB of gain spanning the wavelength range 2050 - 2150 nm. The external NF over this wavelength range was 8-14 dB.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate a continuous wave (CW) seeded synchronization-free optical parametric amplifier (OPA) pumped by a picosecond, 1 µm laser and show its performance when used as a simple yet powerful source for label-free coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), concurrent second harmonic generation (SHG), and two-photon fluorescence microscopy in an epi-detection geometry. The average power level of above 175 mW, spectral resolution of 8 cm-1, and 2 ps pulse duration are well optimized for CARS microscopy in bio-science and bio-medical imaging systems. Our OPA is a much simpler setup than either the "gold-standard" laser and optical parametric oscillator (OPO) combination traditionally used for CARS imaging, or the more recently developed OPA systems pumped with femtosecond pulses [1]. Rapid and accurate tuning between resonances was achieved by changing the poled channels and temperature of the periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) OPA crystal together with the OPA seed wavelength. The Pump-Stokes frequency detuning range fully covered the C-H stretching band used for the imaging of lipids. By enabling three multiphoton techniques using a compact, synchronization free laser source, our work paves the way for the translation of label-free multi-photon microscopy imaging from biomedical research to an imaging based diagnostic tool for use in the healthcare arena.
