This study aimed to measure masticatory performance (MP) using ß-carotene gummy jelly to investigate its relationship with skeletal properties in decompensated patients diagnosed with skeletal class III malocclusion. The study included 78 patients (38 men and 40 women) diagnosed with skeletal class III malocclusion without temporomandibular joint disorder and periodontal disease. MP was measured using a new masticatory measuring device and ß-carotene in the gummy jelly. Lateral and posteroanterior cephalograms were obtained, and skeletal properties (Me deviation, ANB, SNB, APDI, Wits, ODI, facial axis, body length, ramus length, SN-GoGn, anterior facial height, posterior facial height, saddle angle, articular angle, and gonial angle) were evaluated. MP differences according to age and sex and the effect of skeletal properties on MP were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. The MP of all patients was 3690.55±1428.77 mm², MP of the male group was 4043.05±1498.09 mm², and MP of the female group was 3355.68±1272.19 mm². Among the items investigated, the variable that affected MP was posterior facial height. Posterior facial height showed a positive correlation (P=0.022). There was no significant difference between MP and other skeletal properties (P>0.05). The severity of the hypodivergency in skeletal class III could affect MP. The relationship between facial asymmetry or skeletal relation and MP could not be explained in this study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aging on the changes in implant stability over time following implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 104 patients in four age ranges (group 1: <60 years, group 2: 61-70 years, group 3: 71-80 years, and group 4: >80 years) were included. Bone-level tapered implants were placed without implementing any bone augmentation procedure. The final torque value displayed on the implant engine during implant insertion was recorded. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed immediately after surgery to analyze the bone quality around the implant. Implant stability was measured immediately after surgery and 2, 4, and 8 weeks after surgery. RESULTS: In the CBCT image, higher grayscale values were observed in the order of group 1, group 2, and groups 3/4, with statistical significance (p < .05). There was no significant difference in the insertion torque values between age groups (p ≥ .05). Groups 1 and 2 showed lower implant stability values after 2 and 4 weeks compared to immediately and 8 weeks after surgery (p < .05); however, groups 3 and 4 showed no significant difference between the results measured at different timepoints (p ≥ .05). CONCLUSIONS: Implant treatment in elderly patients is successful showing a settled implant stability over time following implant placement when the implant is appropriately engaged in the alveolar bone in the absence of bone augmentation.

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were to use a digital camera to measure the discoloration of orthodontic elastomeric chains in various immersion solutions over different time periods and to determine the valid acceptability tolerances for color changes in orthodontic elastomeric chains by surveying digital photographs. METHODS: Orthodontic elastomeric chains were applied to the maxillary anterior teeth of nine typodont models. The models were divided into three groups and immersed in the curry, coffee, and wine solutions. The digital images of the elastomeric modules were captured and processed using commercial software after 30 min of immersion, thrice a day, for 28 days. The differences in color changes ([Formula: see text]), depending on the type of immersion solution and period, were analyzed using a repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. A web-based survey questionnaire was randomly distributed to 50 respondents for a visual analysis of the elastomeric chain discoloration. The relationship between the surveying score and [Formula: see text] value was analyzed using Spearman's correlation coefficient. The perceptibility and acceptability of elastomeric chain discoloration ([Formula: see text]) based on the type of immersion solutions and periods were analyzed using a regression model. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed in the discoloration of the elastomeric power chain depending on the immersion solution and period. The amount of discoloration was highest in curry, followed by coffee and wine (P < 0.05). The mean discoloration ([Formula: see text]) continued to increase over the entire immersion period. There was a significant correlation between visual scoring and discoloration ([Formula: see text]) over the entire period, especially in the early stages compared to the later stages (r = 0.918, P < 0.05). In 50% of the respondents, the predicted clinically unacceptable discoloration was between 4.46 and 9.98 and in 90% of the respondents, it was between 16.52 and 19.85. CONCLUSIONS: The amount of discoloration was the highest for curry, followed by coffee and wine, and continued to gradually increase during the observation period. Significant differences were found between the color measurements obtained and the visual assessment by observers. The observers varied in their tolerance for perceptibility and acceptability for elastomeric chain discoloration based on the type of dietary media.

Background and Objectives: To evaluate the stability of a dental implant and the effectiveness of a newly designed damping capacity assessment device by improving the number of blows and strength evaluated by a prospective clinical study. Materials and Method: The stability of dental implants was measured in 50 implants in a total of 38 patients. Measurements were performed using Anycheck and Periotest M devices, twice in total, divided into buccal and lingual directions. In addition, measurements were performed on the day of surgery, two weeks, one month, two months, and three months after surgery for a total of five times. After the standardization of the measured values, the differences and changes over time for each device were observed. Result: No difference in standardized values between the two devices was observed at any time point. In both devices, stability decreased at two weeks postoperatively but gradually increased thereafter. No differences were observed in the values according to the measurement direction. Conclusions: The damping capacity of Anycheck was similar to that of Periotest M. After a slight decrease in stability two weeks after implant placement, implant stability increased over time.

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the association between work patterns and periodontal disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2007 and 2012, and data from 22,508 subjects aged ≥19 years were included. An individual's work pattern was classified as either daytime or shift work. Sleep duration was categorized into three ranges: ≤5, 6-8, and ≥9 h/day. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to determine the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for CPI (Community Periodontal Index) ≥3. The CONTRAST statement was used to show the interaction effect of work patterns and sleep duration. RESULTS: The adjusted OR of shift work was 2.168 (CI: 1.929-2.438, p < .0001). Participants who sleep ≤5 or ≥9 h/day showed ORs 0.735 and 0.663, respectively (p = .0181). Interaction effect analysis revealed that the work pattern had a strong influence on periodontal condition when combined with the sleep amount. Shift workers with ≤5 or ≥ 9 h of sleep showed significantly increased ORs for CPI ≥3 (2.1406 and 2.3251, respectively, p < .0001). The ORs for daytime workers were comparable to the original values (≤5: 0.7348, p = .0292; ≥9: 0.6633, p = .0428). CONCLUSION: Altered sleep patterns caused by shift work have more influence on periodontal disease than sleep duration.

Our aim was to investigate the bone regeneration capacity of powder-type biphasic ceramic scaffold (BCP powder), block-type BCP (BCP block), and collagen-added block-type BCP (BCP collagen) with different concentrations of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) in an animal model. Four rabbits were assigned to each of the following groups: no graft + rhBMP-2 (0.1/0.2 mg/mL), BCP powder + rhBMP-2 (0.1/0.2 mg/mL), BCP block + rhBMP-2 (0.1/0.2 mg/mL), and BCP collagen + rhBMP-2 (0.1/0.2 mg/mL), i.e., a total of 32 rabbits. Polycarbonate tubes (Φ 7 mm × 5 mm) for supporting scaffolds were fixed into a 7 mm round border. Subsequently, 0.1 mL of rhBMP-2 solutions with different concentrations was injected into the tubes. Both radiological and histomorphometric analyses showed that osteogenesis was not enhanced by increasing the concentration of rhBMP-2 in all groups at both 3 and 6 weeks. Radiological analysis showed that bone formation was higher in the BCP collagen group than in the BCP powder and BCP block groups at both rhBMP-2 concentrations at 3 weeks. rhBMP-2 enhanced bone formation; however, as the concentration increased, bone formation could not be enhanced infinitely. Collagen-added alloplastic graft material may be useful for mediating rapid bone formation in initial stages.

This study aimed to evaluate the bone regeneration capacity of a customized alloplastic material and xenograft with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2). We prepared hydroxyapatite (HA)/tricalcium phosphate (TCP) pure ceramic bone blocks made using a 3D printing system and added rhBMP-2 to both materials. In eight beagle dogs, a total of 32 defects were created on the lower jaws. The defective sites of the negative control group were left untreated (N group; 8 defects), and those in the positive control group were filled with particle-type Bio-Oss (P group; 12 defects). The defect sites in the experimental group were filled with 3D-printed synthetic bone blocks (3D group; 12 defects). Radiographic and histological evaluations were performed after healing periods of 6 and 12 weeks and showed no significant difference in new bone formation and total bone between the P and 3D groups. The 3D-printed custom HA/TCP graft with rhBMP-2 showed bone regeneration effects similar to that of particulate Bio-Oss with rhBMP-2. Through further study and development, the application of 3D-printed customized alloplastic grafts will be extended to various fields of bone regeneration.

BACKGROUND: The inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) innervates and regulates the sensation of the mandibular teeth and lower lip. The position of the IAN should be monitored prior to surgery. Therefore, a study using artificial intelligence (AI) was planned to image and track the position of the IAN automatically for a quicker and safer surgery. METHODS: A total of 138 cone-beam computed tomography datasets (Internal: 98, External: 40) collected from multiple centers (three hospitals) were used in the study. A customized 3D nnU-Net was used for image segmentation. Active learning, which consists of three steps, was carried out in iterations for 83 datasets with cumulative additions after each step. Subsequently, the accuracy of the model for IAN segmentation was evaluated using the 50 datasets. The accuracy by deriving the dice similarity coefficient (DSC) value and the segmentation time for each learning step were compared. In addition, visual scoring was considered to comparatively evaluate the manual and automatic segmentation. RESULTS: After learning, the DSC gradually increased to 0.48 ± 0.11 to 0.50 ± 0.11, and 0.58 ± 0.08. The DSC for the external dataset was 0.49 ± 0.12. The times required for segmentation were 124.8, 143.4, and 86.4 s, showing a large decrease at the final stage. In visual scoring, the accuracy of manual segmentation was found to be higher than that of automatic segmentation. CONCLUSIONS: The deep active learning framework can serve as a fast, accurate, and robust clinical tool for demarcating IAN location.

Background and Objectives: The aim of our study was to test whether wide diameter (6 mm) implants perform differently from standard diameter (4 mm) implants in terms of marginal bone level and survival rate. Materials and Methods: Our sample comprised 72 patients who underwent surgery; a total of 80 implants were placed in the maxillary or mandibular molar region. Patients were divided into two groups according to the diameter of the implant, and were followed up for six years after the final setting of the prosthetics. In the test group, 40 implants with 6-mm diameter were inserted; in the control group, 40 standard diameter implants were inserted. Using panoramic radiographs, we investigated mesial and distal marginal bone levels around the implant fixtures. Results: After the first implant surgery, three implants, including one wide diameter and two standard diameter implants, failed due to lack of osseointegration. We did not note any fixture fracture during the six-year follow-up. After loading, we observed a six-year survival rate of 97.29% with no statistically significant difference from standard diameter implants, with a survival rate of 94.87%. Conclusions: This study shows that 6-mm diameter implants may be considered in the presence of adequate alveolar ridge width in the posterior maxillary and mandibular regions.

OBJECTIVES: Conventional guided bone regeneration (GBR) limits the amount of bone graft due to limited soft tissue expansion. We hypothesize that the use of tissue expander will successfully augment soft tissue prior to bone graft, allowing for sufficient amount of grafting which will lead to a more stable and effective vertical bone graft. The authors aimed to evaluate effectiveness of the novel self-inflating tissue expander for vertical augmentation in terms of soft tissue expansion, clinical outcomes, and related complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled trial was performed on patients requiring vertical augmentation. For experimental group patients, the tissue expander was subperiosteally implanted and followed by a tunneling bone graft without full flap reflection. Control patients underwent conventional vertical GBR. Primary objectives were to evaluate the dimensional changes of soft tissue and radiographic vertical bone gain and retention. As a secondary outcome, clinical complications and thickness changes of expanded overlying tissue were assessed and analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-three patients in each group were included. During a 4-week expansion, two of the experimental group showed over-expansion and one showed mucosal perforation associated with previous severe scars. The other patients showed uneventful expansion and mean tissue augmentation was 6.88 ± 1.64 mm vertically. Ultrasonographic measurements of overlying gingiva revealed no thinning after tissue expansion (p > .05). Significantly higher vertical bone gain was shown in the experimental group (5.12 ± 1.25 mm) compared with that in the control patients (4.22 ± 1.15 mm; p < .05). After a 6-month retention period, the mean vertical bone measurement of the controls had decreased to 1.90 mm (55.0% reduction), which was a significantly greater decrease than that in the experimental group (mean 3.55 mm, 30.7% reduction; p < .05). CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrated the effectiveness of tissue expanders followed by tunneling bone graft for vertical augmentation; however, studies comparing the two techniques without tissue expanders are needed to elucidate the net effect of tissue expansion.

In this study, we evaluated the bone regenerative capability of a customizable hydroxyapatite (HA) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) scaffold using a digital light processing (DLP)-type 3D printing system. Twelve healthy adult male beagle dogs were the study subjects. A total of 48 defects were created, with two defects on each side of the mandible in all the dogs. The defect sites in the negative control group (sixteen defects) were left untreated (the NS group), whereas those in the positive control group (sixteen defects) were filled with a particle-type substitute (the PS group). The defect sites in the experimental groups (sixteen defects) were filled with a 3D printed substitute (the 3DS group). Six dogs each were exterminated after healing periods of 4 and 8 weeks. Radiological and histomorphometrical evaluations were then performed. None of the groups showed any specific problems. In radiological evaluation, there was a significant difference in the amount of new bone formation after 4 weeks (p < 0.05) between the PS and 3DS groups. For both of the evaluations, the difference in the total amount of bone after 8 weeks was statistically significant (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in new bone between the PS and 3DS groups in both evaluations after 8 weeks (p > 0.05). The proposed HA/TCP scaffold without polymers, obtained using the DLP-type 3D printing system, can be applied for bone regeneration. The 3D printing of a HA/TCP scaffold without polymers can be used for fabricating customized bone grafting substitutes.

This study evaluated the mechanical properties and bone regeneration ability of 3D-printed pure hydroxyapatite (HA)/tricalcium phosphate (TCP) pure ceramic scaffolds with variable pore architectures. A digital light processing (DLP) 3D printer was used to construct block-type scaffolds containing only HA and TCP after the polymer binder was completely removed by heat treatment. The compressive strength and porosity of the blocks with various structures were measured; scaffolds with different pore sizes were implanted in rabbit calvarial models. The animals were observed for eight weeks, and six animals were euthanized in the fourth and eighth weeks. Then, the specimens were evaluated using radiological and histological analyses. Larger scaffold pore sizes resulted in enhanced bone formation after four weeks (p < 0.05). However, in the eighth week, a correlation between pore size and bone formation was not observed (p > 0.05). The findings showed that various pore architectures of HA/TCP scaffolds can be achieved using DLP 3D printing, which can be a valuable tool for optimizing bone-scaffold properties for specific clinical treatments. As the pore size only influenced bone regeneration in the initial stage, further studies are required for pore-size optimization to balance the initial bone regeneration and mechanical strength of the scaffold.

Background and Objectives: Medical volunteering seeks to meet the clinical needs of underserved areas, but has been criticized for difficulties in addressing local health issues and resultant lack of sustainability. Our team has visited rural Cambodia annually since 2012. This study reports the illnesses encountered during the recent mission and share our experiences to improve the efficiency of medical volunteering. Materials and Methods: Infrastructure, such as public electricity or water, was unavailable, hence most medical care and records were hand-performed. We categorized (1) primary diagnoses (chief complaints) by duration of symptoms, and (2) primary and secondary diagnoses (illnesses that were not related to the chief complaint) by severity of illness since patients commonly reported multiple symptoms. Blood pressure and anthropometric values were also checked and analyzed. Results: We encountered 317 adult and 141 pediatric patients. Among adults, 61.3% had persistent chronic (>6 month) symptoms of their chief complaints. The commonest diagnoses of chronic symptoms were musculoarthritis (31.5%) and gastroesophageal reflux disease and/or gastritis (21.7%). Hypertension and/or cardiac problems were relatively common among males (13.6%). The most common diagnosis among the severest cases (specialized or intensive care recommended) was cardiac problems (14.8%), often with abnormalities in sonography or electrocardiogram. For children, the overwhelming majority of diagnoses were related to acute symptoms and low severity, and approximately half were cases of the common cold. Commonly prescribed drugs were antacids or mucosal protectors (31.3%), Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or other painkillers (27.6%), and antiparasites (17.7%) in adults, and NSAIDs (44.7%) and antiparasites (23.2%) in children. Among adults, 32.7% were diagnosed with hypertension, and body mass index (p = 0.003) and age (p < 0.001) were both correlated with hypertension and its grade. Conclusion: Our study offers practical help to volunteer health workers planning to visit Southeast Asia.

Background and objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of decompression on jaw cysts according to various parameters by volumetric analysis using three-dimensional computed tomography. Materials and methods: Fifty patients who underwent surgical decompression of the jaw cystic lesion were selected, and their preoperative and postoperative computed tomography results between 3 and 27 months were collected. Volumetric analysis was performed to evaluate any differences in the rate of volumetric change according to the sex, age, initial volume of the lesion, duration, location of the lesion, tooth extraction, expansion of the cortical layer, and pathological diagnosis. Multiple linear regression and generalised linear mixed models were used for statistical analyses. Results: The mean reduction rate among all patients was 54.68%. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that higher reduction rates were associated with a long decompression period, young patient age, and location of the cyst in the posterior maxilla. Generalised linear mixed models revealed that higher reduction rates were associated with a long decompression period and young patient age. Conclusions: Decompression was an effective treatment for reducing the cyst size in all patients. Its effectiveness increased with a long treatment duration, young patient age, and cyst location in the posterior maxilla three-dimensionally.

This study aimed to investigate the possible influence of the regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP) on dental implant osseointegration. Orthognathic surgery was set as an intervention for RAP, and a multicentre cohort study of two groups was undertaken. Group O included patients with single implant placement at least 4 months after orthognathic surgery and functional loading for more than 1 year, while controls (Group C) were without any major surgery. Clinical and radiographic assessments of implants, including changes in marginal bone levels, were analysed at baseline, 6- and 12-month follow-up. Bivariate analysis of two groups with propensity score matching was performed. After propensity score matching, all 10 confounding variables had acceptable standardised difference scores (<20%), indicating that the matching procedure had efficiently balanced the two groups. Following the propensity score adjustment, the marginal bone loss was significantly higher in Group O than the control at 6 months (1.66 ± 1.05 mm vs 0.59 ± 0.64 mm, P < 0.001) and 12 months (2.30 ± 1.27 mm vs 0.82 ± 0.78 mm, P < 0.001). Compared to Group C, subjects in Group O had a higher incidence of peri-implant mucositis and implantitis (11.8% vs 1.5%, P = 0.033). Impaired osseointegration of dental implants was associated with orthognathic surgery. Special considerations for peri-implant soft and hard tissue stability should be addressed to obtain ideal treatment results and prognosis for patients who have had prior orthognathic surgery.

PURPOSE: Cysts are common pathologic entities in the oral and maxillofacial region. Enucleation is commonly used for treatment and is occasionally followed by bone grafting. However, no studies have evaluated factors affecting the failure of grafts used for cystic defects in the oral and maxillofacial region. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the risk factors for postoperative graft failure in patients treated with cyst enucleation and simultaneous bone grafting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical data for 305 patients who had undergone cyst enucleation with simultaneous bone grafting were retrospectively investigated in this multicenter case-and-control study. The predictor variables included host, pathologic, and treatment factors. The outcome variable was success or failure of the bone graft. Descriptive statistics were computed, and the P value was set at .05. RESULTS: Bone graft failure was observed in 48 cases. The mean duration from surgery to failure was 38.7 days. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between graft failure and younger age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.033; P = .016), smoking (OR = 2.598; P = .017), preoperative infection (OR = 4.660; P = .001), large cysts (OR = 1.052; P = .010), impaction of the mandibular third molar in the cystic cavity (OR = 3.021; P = .007), perilesional osteosclerosis (OR = 4.973; P = .001), and the use of mixed non-autogenous and autogenous bone grafts (OR = 3.891; P = .007). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a list of important factors that should be considered by clinicians planning enucleation and simultaneous bone grafting for cysts in the oral and maxillofacial region.

INTRODUCTION: Nonabsorbable metallic membrane for guided bone regeneration is remained permanently even though after complete healing. There would be metallic exposure followed by the risk of infection; the membrane should be removed for the additional procedure such as implant installation. Since absorbable nonmetallic mesh is absorbed within 3 to 6 months, it is unnecessary to be removed. However, the absorbable membrane shows lower retention, lower mechanical strength, and difficulty of manipulation than the nonabsorbable ones.The purpose of this study is to evaluate the ability of absorbable metallic mesh (hydroxyapatite-coated magnesium mesh) with acceptable mechanical properties and satisfying biocompatibility. METHODS: The bioresorption and fate of magnesium were evaluated in Sprague Dawley rat (SD rat) with critical defect of calvarium. The critical defect with a diameter of 8 mm was made on calvarium using trephine bur in 18 SD rats. The defected models were divided into 2 groups: the control group (9 SD rat) without mesh and the experimental group (9 SD rat) with the insertion of prototype HA-coated magnesium mesh. The 3 SD rats were sacrificed at 6, 12, and 18 weeks. The histopathological and radiographic examinations were performed afterward. RESULTS: In the control group, there was no specific symptom. The experimental group also showed no specific symptom including swelling and dehiscence related to hydrogen gas formation. From 6 to 18 weeks, the experimental group showed the progressive absorption and fracture of magnesium mesh. However, there was no specific effectiveness of guided bone regeneration in both groups. There was no significant difference in bone volume, bone surface, and bone volume fraction between the negative control group and the group with magnesium mesh (P >0.05). CONCLUSION: Hydroxyapatite-coated magnesium mesh showed reasonable process of bioresorption and bony reaction; however, the effectiveness of guided bone regeneration and management of the bioresorption rate should be reconsidered.

PURPOSE: This experiment aimed to observe the differences in biological properties by producing BGS-7 + PCL scaffolds with different weight fractions of BGS-7 through 3D printing and to confirm whether using the scaffold for vertical bone augmentation is effective. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cube-shaped bioglass (BGS-7) and polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds with different weight fractions (PCL alone, PCL with 15% and 30% BGS-7) are produced using 3D printing. The surface hydroxyapatite (HA) apposition, the pH change, proliferation and attachment assays, and various gene expression levels are assessed. After a 7-mm implant was inserted 3 mm into the rabbit calvaria, vertical bone augmentation is performed around the implant and inside the scaffold in four ways: scaffold only, scaffold+bone graft, bone graft only, and no graft. Sacrifice is performed at 6, 12, and 24 weeks, and the various parameters are compared radiographically and histologically. RESULTS: HA apposition, cell proliferation, cell attachment, and expression of osteogenic genes increase as the proportion of BGS-7 increase. In the in vivo test, a higher bone-implant contact ratio, bone volume ratio, bone mineral density, and new bone area are observed when the scaffold and bone grafts were used together. CONCLUSION: The 3D-printed scaffold, a mixture of BGS-7 and PCL, exhibit higher biological compatibility as the proportion of BGS-7 increase. Additionally, the use of scaffold is effective for vertical bone augmentation.

The aim of this study was to convert medical images stored in 3 mm slices in the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) to 1 mm slices, using artificial intelligence (AI), and to analyze the accuracy of the AI. The original 1.0 mm CT slices of the facial bone were obtained from 30 patients and reformatted to a rough CT slice of 3.0 mm. CT slices of 1.0 mm were subsequently reconstructed from those of 3.0 mm using AI. The AI and rough CT images were superimposed on the original CT images. Fourteen hard-tissue and five soft-tissue landmarks were selected for measuring the discrepancy. The overall average differences in values for the hard-tissue landmarks were 1.31 ± 0.38 mm and 0.81 ± 0.17 mm for the rough and AI CT images, respectively. The values for the soft-tissue landmarks were 1.18 ± 0.35 mm and 0.54 ± 0.17 mm for the rough and AI CT images, respectively. The differences for all the landmarks, excluding point A and pogonion, were statistically significant. Within the limitations of the study it seems that CT images reconstructed using AI might provide more accurate clinical information with a discrepancy of less than 1.0 mm.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of shift work on periodontal disease in blue-and white-collar workers and to examine the interaction effects between occupation and work patterns. Data were collected from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare for a total of nine years from 2007 to 2015. Participants with missing outcome variables were excluded from the analysis and a total of 32,336 participants were included in the final analysis. Univariable odds ratios (OR) were calculated using a logistic regression model with 95% confidence interval (CI). A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed using the backward elimination method. The CONTRAST statement was used to analyze the interaction effect between occupation and work patterns. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that interaction effects are present between the terms, occupational type and work pattern. Crude OR of shift work for periodontitis was 1.269 [CI 1.213-1.327, P < 0.05]. However, following adjustment for multiple confounding factors and the interaction effect term considered, this OR (1.269) increased to 1.381 [CI 1.253-1.523] in white-collar group while it decreased to 1.198 [1.119-1.283] in blue-collar. Crude OR of blue-collar (OR = 3.123, CI 2.972-3.281, P < 0.05) decreased to 1.151 [CI 1.049-1.262] when interaction effect to the shift work was considered. Shift work pattern increases the risk for periodontitis and this adverse effect is greater when white-collar workers are engaged comparing to blue-collar. The result of this study suggests that 24/7 lifestyle of the modern society poses health risks to the relevant people and the potential harm can be greater to white-collar workers.
