RESUMEN

Improving the nitrogen and phosphorus removal rates and efficiently controlling membrane fouling are the keys to fully exploiting the applicability of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) process in high-concentration wastewater treatment. To that purpose, an integrated reactor composed of an anaerobic ceramic membrane bioreactor and N anaerobic fluidized bed (AnCMBR-AFB) was built and pollutant removal efficiency, nitrogen and phosphorus recovery characteristics, and membrane pollution features of this integrated reactor were investigated. The results revealed that the integrated reactor had good pollutant removal efficiency, with turbidity, chromaticity, and UV254 average values of the effluent being 0.470 NTU, 0.011 A, and 0.057 cm-1, respectively, and the average CODCr removal rate was 80%. The nitrogen and phosphorus recoveries were significantly higher than the nitrogen and phosphorus removal rates of conventional AnMBR at 23.20 ± 1.17% and 43.34 ± 1.54%, respectively. Microscopic analysis revealed the formation of magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) crystals on the carrier's surface, and friction between the carrier and the membrane surface could delay membrane fouling while allowing the contaminated membrane surface to retain significant roughness. Membrane fouling was mostly brought on by amides and saturated hydrocarbons, and inorganic metal ions also played a role to some extent.

We have proposed and demonstrated a weak acoustic signal detection technology based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). Non-contact acoustic signals transmitting through air gap between the sound source and the receiver are difficult to detect due to fast attenuation. In order to improve the detection ability of non-contact weak acoustic signals, we demonstrate that multi-mode fiber (MMF) is a better solution than single-mode fiber (SMF) benefiting from its larger core and higher Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) capture coefficient. The frequency signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) has been enhanced by 9.26 dB. Then, with the help of 3D printing technology, elastomers have been designed to further enhance the detection ability due to the high-sensitive response to acoustic signals. Compared with the previous reported "I" type elastomer, the location and frequency SNR enhancement caused by our new proposed "n" type elastomer are 8.39 dB and 11.02 dB in SMF based system. The values are further improved to 10.51 dB and 13.38 dB in MMF and "n" type elastomer integrated system. And a phase-pressure sensitivity of -94.62 dB re rad/µPa has been achieved at 2.5 kHz. This non-contact weak acoustic signal detection technique has great application potential in the quasi-distributed partial discharge (PD) detection of smart grid.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed picky eating in pregnant women by exploring whether picky eating is associated with pregnant women's well-being, including life satisfaction, psychological distress, and psychosocial impairment. METHOD: Data collected were from 345 Chinese pregnant women ( M age = 29.95 years, SD = 5.58). Pearson correlation analyses were conducted to examine zero-order correlations between picky eating and well-being variables (i.e., life satisfaction, psychological distress, and psychosocial impairment). Hierarchical multiple regressions were conducted to examine the unique associations of picky eating with well-being variables, adjusting for demographic and pregnancy-related characteristics and thinness-oriented disordered eating. RESULTS: Picky eating was significantly and negatively correlated with life satisfaction (r = -.24, p < .001) and positively correlated with psychological distress (r = .37, p < .001) and psychosocial impairment (r = .50, p < .001). When adjusting for covariates and thinness-oriented disordered eating, picky eating was still significantly associated with lower life satisfaction, higher psychological distress, and higher psychosocial impairment. DISCUSSION: The findings suggest that picky eating may be a significant correlate of pregnant women's poorer well-being. Future research with longitudinal designs is warranted to further examine the temporal associations between picky eating and pregnant women's well-being. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE: Picky eating behaviors are poorly understood in pregnant women. Our results revealed that higher picky eating behaviors were associated with lower life satisfaction and higher psychological distress and psychosocial impairment in Chinese pregnant women. Researchers and clinicians may consider picky eating in the assessment and treatment of mental health and disordered eating in pregnant women.

The current study explored the relationships between retrospective parenting styles and food parenting in childhood (≤ 12 years old) and Chinese adults' current maladaptive and adaptive eating behaviors. We recruited 501 Chinese adults (50.30% men, aged 19-46 years). A set of questionnaires were used to measure retrospective parenting styles (i.e., emotional warmth, rejection, and overprotection), food parenting (i.e., parental concern, monitoring, pressure to eat, and restriction), and current maladaptive (i.e., disordered eating) and adaptive (i.e., intuitive eating) eating behaviors. Correlation and mediation analyses were employed to analyze these data. Results revealed that retrospective parenting styles and food parenting were significantly related to current maladaptive and adaptive eating behaviors in both Chinese men and women. Mediation analyses showed that higher retrospective parental warmth was related to higher retrospective parental concern which, in turn, was related to higher current disordered eating in men (indirect effect = 0.14, 95% CI 0.08, 0.24). Furthermore, higher retrospective parental overprotection was related to higher retrospective parental pressure to eat which, in turn, was related to higher current disordered eating in men (indirect effect = 0.06, 95% CI 0.01, 0.14). For women, higher retrospective parental warmth was associated with higher retrospective parental concern which, in turn, was associated with lower current intuitive eating in women (indirect effect = -0.04, 95% CI = -0.10, -0.01). Furthermore, higher retrospective parental overprotection was associated with higher retrospective parental concern which, in turn, was associated with lower current intuitive eating in women (indirect effect = -0.03, 95% CI = -0.08, -0.004). The findings indicate the importance of including childhood parenting styles and food parenting in future research and intervention of adults' current maladaptive and adaptive eating behaviors.

Chemical cleaning is one of the key technical means to control membrane fouling, restore membrane flux and ensure the stable operation of membrane systems. In the experiment, the six most representative chemical cleaning agents for ceramic membranes, such as sulfuric acid (H2SO4), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-Na2), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (OP-10), were used as research objects. The cleaning effect of the two-step combined cleaning of chemical cleaning agents on the fouled membrane was systematically investigated. Results showed that the order of the chemical cleaning agent had a significant effect on the cleaning effect. The best chemical cleaning program was determined to be NaClO first and then SDS: the fouled ceramic membrane was soaked in NaClO solution at 0.15% for 2.5 h and further soaked in SDS solution at five times its own critical micelle concentration for 2.5 h. The predicted long-term lifespan of the ceramic membranes was 4.91 years. Scanning electron microscopy-energy spectrum analysis showed that the surface roughness of the cleaned ceramic membrane was slightly higher than that of the new membrane. The contact angle was slightly lower than that of the new membrane.

Accumulating evidence suggests that parental feeding practices during childhood are related to adults' eating behaviors and weight status, but research exploring these relationships is largely conducted in Western contexts. However, China, a country that holds the largest world population, has distinct patterns of eating habits and food culture from Western countries. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine relationships between retrospective parental feeding practices (e.g., concern, monitoring, pressure to eat, and restriction) and current body mass index (BMI) and satisfaction with food-related life in a sample of 476 Chinese university students (195 men; Mage = 19.78 years, SD = 1.23). We also examined whether appetitive traits mediated these associations. Retrospective parental feeding practices were significantly related with participants' current BMI (concern: r = 0.26, p < .001; pressure to eat: r = -0.15, p < .001) and satisfaction with food-related life (concern: r = 0.15, p < .001; monitoring: r = 0.12, p = .009; pressure to eat: r = 0.13, p = .006; restriction: r = 0.16, p < .001). Relationships were partially mediated by young adults' current appetitive traits (e.g., enjoyment of food, emotional overeating, satiety responsiveness, slowness in eating). These findings suggest that retrospective parental feeding practices are important correlates of young adults' current weight status and satisfaction with food-related life, and that appetitive traits partially explain these relationships in the Chinese context.

As one of the most common pathological processes in the clinic, wound healing has always been an important topic in medical research. Improving the wound healing environment, shortening the healing time and promoting fast and effective wound healing are hot and challenging issues in clinical practice. The nuclear factor-erythroid-related factor 2 (NFE2L2 or NRF2) signalling pathway reduces oxidative damage and participates in the regulation of anti-oxidative gene expression in the process of oxidative stress and thus improves the cell protection. Activation of the NRF2 signalling pathway increases the resistance of the cell to chemical carcinogens and inflammation. The signal transduction pathway regulates anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects by regulating calcium ions, mitochondrial oxidative stress, autophagy, ferroptosis, pyroptosis and apoptosis. In this article, the role of the NRF2 signalling pathway in wound healing and its research progress in recent years are reviewed. In short, the NRF2 signalling pathway has crucial clinical significance in wound healing and is worthy of further study.

As the only viviparous reptile in China that has both temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) and genetic-dependent sex determination (GSD) mechanisms, Eremias multiocellata is considered as an ideal species for studying the sex determination mechanism in viviparous lizards. However, studies on embryonic stage of viviparous lizards and morphological characteristics of each stage are limited. In the present study, the embryonic development process of E. multiocellata is divided into 15 stages (stages 28-42) according to the morphology of embryos. Embryos sizes are measured and continuous dynamic variation of some key features, including limbs, genitals, eyes, pigments, and brain scales are color imaged by a stereoscopic microscope. Furthermore, based on these morphological characteristics, we compare the similarities and differences in the embryonic development of E. multiocellata with other squamate species. Our results not only identified the staging table of E. multiocellata with continuous changes of external morphological characteristics but also developed a staging scheme for an important model species that provides a necessary foundation for study of sex determination in a viviparous lizard.

Human adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have a potential for the treatment of peripheral nerve injury. Recent studies demonstrated that stem cells can mediate therapeutic effect by secreting exosomes. We aimed to investigate the effect of human ASCs derived exosomes (ASC-Exos) on peripheral nerve regeneration in vitro and in vivo. Our results showed after being internalized by Schwann cells (SCs), ASC-Exos significantly promoted SC proliferation, migration, myelination, and secretion of neurotrophic factors by upregulating corresponding genes in vitro. We next evaluated the efficacy of ASC-Exo therapy in a rat sciatic nerve transection model with a 10-mm gap. Axon regeneration, myelination, and restoration of denervation muscle atrophy in ASC-Exos treated group was significantly improved compared to vehicle control. This study demonstrates that ASC-Exos effectively promote peripheral nerve regeneration via optimizing SC function and thereby represent a novel therapeutic strategy for regenerative medicine and nerve tissue engineering.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most lethal human malignancy and the leading cause of death among females around the world. Many antitumor agents have microbial origins. 5'-epi-SPA-6952A is a new 24-membered macrolide isolated from the cultured broth of Streptomyces diastatochromogenes. Therefore, we studied the activity and molecular mechanism of 5'-epi-SPA-6952A in human cervical carcinoma HeLa cell. The results showed that 5'-epi-SPA-6952A significantly inhibited cell proliferation and migration. In addition, 5'-epi-SPA-6952A obviously increased the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species and DNA damage in HeLa cells. Moreover, nuclear shrinkage of cells, decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential, and upregulation of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio resulted in the release of cytochrome c, and activation of caspase-9/3 was observed in HeLa cells treated with 5'-epi-SPA-6952A, which means it enhanced the intrinsic mitochondrial apoptosis. Besides, DNA-damage associated proteins poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and p53 were also studied, and the expressions of cleaved-PARP and p53 were drastically increased in HeLa cells treated with 5'-epi-SPA-6952A. Furthermore, we confirmed that 5'-epi-SPA-6952A affected the survival of HeLa cells by blocking cell cycle progression in the G1 phase. Taken together, the results shows that 5'-epi-SPA-6952A significantly inhibited HeLa cells proliferation via intrinsic mitochondrial apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, and blocking cell migration.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is considered to be the most frequent neuropathic complication of diabetes, and severely affects the quality of life of patients. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) participate in various pathophysiological processes and associate with many diseases. However, the exact impact of lncRNAs on DPN remains obscure. To discover a potential connection, a microarray study was conducted to analyze the expression profiling of lncRNAs and messenger RNAs (mRNAs) in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) from streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats with DPN. As a result, 983 lncRNAs and 1357 mRNAs were aberrantly expressed compared with control samples. Using bioinformatics analyses, we identified 558 Gene Ontology terms and 94 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways to be significantly enriched. Additionally, the signal-net analysis indicated that integrin receptors, including Itgb3, Itgb1, Itgb8, and Itga6, might be important players in network regulation. Furthermore, the lncRNA-mRNA network analysis showed dynamic interactions between the dysregulated lncRNAs and mRNAs. This is the first study to present an overview of lncRNA and mRNA expressions in DRG tissues from DPN rats. Our results indicate that these differentially expressed lncRNAs may have crucial roles in pathological processes of DPN by regulating their coexpressed mRNAs. The data may provide novel targets for future studies, which should focus on validating their roles in the progression of DPN.

BACKGROUND AIMS: Tissue engineering technology is a promising therapeutic strategy in peripheral nerve injury. Schwann cells (SCs) are deemed to be a vital component of cell-based nerve regeneration therapies. Many methods for producing SC-like cells derived from adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) have been explored, but their phenotypic and functional characteristics remain unsatisfactory. METHODS: We investigated whether human ADSCs can be induced to differentiate into mature and stable SC-like cells with the addition of insulin, progestero``ne and glucocorticoids. The phenotypic and functional characteristics of new differentiated ADSCs (modified SC-like cells) were evaluated by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunocytochemistry in vitro. Cells loaded into collagen sponge biomaterials were implanted around transected sciatic nerves with a 10-mm gap in vivo. The axon regrowth and functional recovery of the regenerated nerves were assessed by immunohistochemistry and Walking footprint analysis. RESULTS: After differentiation induction, the modified SC-like cells showed significantly up-regulated levels of S100B and P0 and enhanced proliferative and migratory capacities. In addition, the modified SC-like cells showed increased secretion of neurotrophic factors, and their functional characteristics were maintained for more than 3 weeks after removing the induction reagents. The modified SC-like cells exhibited significantly enhanced axon regrowth, myelination and functional recovery after sciatic nerve injury. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the results suggest that this modified induction method can induce human ADSCs to differentiate into cells with the molecular and functional properties of mature SCs and increase the promotion of peripheral nerve regeneration.

On 7 March 2019, African swine fever in a domestic pig farm was detected in Guangxi Province of China. The phylogenetic analysis showed that its causative strain contained two tandem repeat sequence insertions in the intergenic region between the I73R and the I329L genes, and was different from previously reported strains in China and other countries.

RESUMEN

On August 3, 2018, an outbreak of African swine fever in pigs was reported in China. We subjected a virus from an African swine fever-positive pig sample to phylogenetic analysis. This analysis showed that the causative strain belonged to the p72 genotype II and CD2v serogroup 8.

A boy was admitted at the age of 17 months. He had psychomotor retardation in early infancy. Physical examination revealed microcephalus, unusual facies, and a single palmar crease on his right hand, as well as muscle hypotonia in the extremities and hyperextension of the bilateral shoulder and hip joints. Genetic detection identified two pathogenic compound heterozygous mutations, c.8868-1G>A (splicing) and c.11624_11625del (p.V3875Afs*10), in the VPS13B gene, and thus the boy was diagnosed with Cohen syndrome. Cohen syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by the VPS13B gene mutations and has complex clinical manifestations. Its clinical features include microcephalus, unusual facies, neutropenia, and joint hyperextension. VPS13B gene detection helps to make a confirmed diagnosis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Multidrug resistance protein 4 (MRP4) has been associated with nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA) antiretroviral therapy failure, though is unclear if MRP4 is also correlated with the failure of anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) therapy. METHODS: Multidrug resistance protein 4 expression in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), liver tissues and human hepatoma cell lines was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), western blotting and immunohistochemistry assays. Supernatant and intracellular HBV DNA levels of MRP4-overexpressing or silenced HepG2.4D14 (wild-type) and HepG2.A64 (entecavir-resistant mutant) cells were measured by quantitative PCR. NA concentrations and HBV mutational analysis were assessed by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry assays and DNA sequencing. Multivariate analysis was used to assess predictive factors for treatment failure. RESULTS: High expression of MRP4 was found in hepatoma cell lines and PBMCs, and up- or down-regulation of MRP4 expression altered the susceptibility of cells to NAs. MRP inhibitors increased NA intracellular accumulation and decreased extracellular levels. Moreover, MRP4 expression in PBMCs was correlated with that in paired liver tissues. Furthermore, multivariate analysis showed MRP4 mRNA expression to be an independent predictor of NA treatment failure. CONCLUSIONS: Multidrug resistance protein 4 is a critical protein associated with the antiviral efficacy of NAs, and combination therapy of NA and MRP inhibitors could reduce the dosage for long-term NA use. This is the first report to demonstrate that MRP4 expression is an important factor predicting treatment failure in chronic hepatitis B patients and will provide a potential therapeutic target against HBV.

Here, polymorphisms of the ovine prion protein gene were analyzed in 486 Chinese sheep from 16 main local breeds. Polymorphisms R or H at codons 154 and four polymorphisms at codon 171 encoding Q, R, H, or K were identified. The A/V polymorphism at codon 136 was not observed, and all sheep were homozygous for A at this position. In addition, ten polymorphisms at codons 21, 101, 112, 127, 138, 141, 143, 146, 153 and 189 were detected. The predominant Q allele occurred at codon 171, with a high frequency of 88.68 %, implying a risk of scrapie in China.

In recent years, ceramic membranes have been increasingly used in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). However, membrane fouling was still the core issue restricting the large-scale engineering application of ceramic MBRs. As a novel and alternative technology, ultrasonic could be used to control membrane fouling. This research focused on the efficiency and mechanism of ultrasonic controlling membrane fouling in ceramic MBRs. The results showed that ultrasonic reduced the sludge concentration in MBR, and the average particle size of sludge was always in a high range. The sludge activity of the system was stable at 6-9 (mg O2·(g MLSS·h)-1), indicating that ultrasonic did not destroy the activity of microorganisms in the system. The extracellular polymer substance (EPS) of the ultrasonic group was slightly higher than that of the control group, while the soluble microbial product (SMP) content was relatively stable. The ceramic membrane of the ultrasonic group has a partial retention effect on the organic components. The application of ultrasonic slowed down the decrease of the hydrophilicity of the ceramic membrane. The main pollutants on the membrane surface exist in the form of aromatic and heteroaromatic rings, alkynes, and so forth. Ultrasonic removes the amide substances from the membrane surface. Membrane fouling resistance is mainly due to membrane pore blockage, accounting for 75.53%. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Enrich the research on the mechanism of ultrasonic technology in membrane fouling control. The MBR can still operate normally with ultrasonic applied. The time for the ceramic membrane to reach the fouling end point is 2.4 times that without ultrasonic. The main cause of membrane fouling was pore blocking, accounting for 75.53%.

Understanding mass transfer mechanisms is vital for developing new material synthesis and densification technologies. Ion transport, serving both mass and charge transfer, is essential for the rapid preparation of high-performance fast ionic conductor thermoelectric materials like Zn4Sb3 and Cu2Q (Q = S, Se). In the case of dual-cation fast ion conductor materials like CuAgSe, exploring the relationship between cation transport becomes pertinent. In this study, copper (Cu) and selenium (Se) undergo a reaction in the presence of an electric field (∼15 A), resulting in the formation of the CuSe compound. Subsequent to this initial reaction, a subsequent thermal environment facilitates the interaction among Cu, CuSe, and Ag2Se, culminating in the rapid formation and densification of CuAgSe (with a relative density exceeding 99%) in just 30 s. Evidently, the diffusion of copper ions substantiates a pivotal role in facilitating mass transfer. As a result, CuAg1+xSe samples with different silver contents (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05) can effectively inhibit cation vacancy, and introduce highly ordered Ag nanotwins to enhance the electrical transport performance. For CuAg1.04Se, a peak ZT value of 1.0 can be achieved at 673 K, which is comparable to the literatures. This work will guide the future electric field-assisted rapid mass transfer of materials.

The micro thermoelectric device (m-TED) boasts features such as adjustable volume, straightforward structure, and precise, rapid temperature control, positioning it as the only current solution for managing the temperature of microelectronic systems. It is extensively utilized in 5G optical modules, laser lidars, and infrared detection. Nevertheless, as the size of the m-TED diminishes, the growing proportion of interface damages the device's operational reliability, constraining the advancement of the m-TED. In this study, we used commercially available bismuth telluride materials to construct the m-TED. The device's reliability was tested under various temperatures: -40, 85, 125, and 150 °C. By deconstructing and analyzing the devices that failed during the tests, we discovered that the primary cause of device failure was the degradation of the solder layer. Moreover, we demonstrated that encapsulating the device with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) could effectively delay the deterioration of its performance. This study sparks new insights into the service reliability of m-TEDs and paves the way for further optimizing device interface design and enhancing the device manufacturing process.
