RESUMEN

Defining the kidney stone composition is important for determining a treatment plan, understanding etiology and preventing recurrence of nephrolithiasis, which is considered as a common, civilization disease and a serious worldwide medical problem. The aim of this study was to investigate the morphology and chemical composition of multicomponent kidney stones. The identification methods such as infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microscopy with the EDX detector were presented. The studies by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were also carried out for better understanding of their chemical structure. The chemical mapping by the FTIR microscopy was performed to show the distribution of individual chemical compounds that constitute the building blocks of kidney stones. The use of modern research methods with a particular emphasis on the spectroscopic methods allowed for a thorough examination of the subject of nephrolithiasis.

This qualitative study aimed to examine the experiences and attitudes toward masturbation among emerging adult women. The study was the first to compare women's solo and partnered masturbation experiences, focusing on how feelings of pleasure, sexual desire, and a sense of empowerment-important markers of women's sexual subjectivity-varied across the two contexts. The sample consisted of 40 women between the ages of 18 and 22 years. The majority of participants identified as Latina (33%) or Black (30%) and were enrolled in community college. Semi-structured interviews about women's masturbation experiences were analyzed using thematic analysis. Women described a multitude of feelings, including pleasure but also awkwardness and guilt. Although women did not describe their masturbation practices as morally wrong, they often alluded to disliking masturbation and preferring it less to partnered sex. Whereas some attitudes and feelings (e.g., awkwardness) arose in the context of both solo and partnered masturbation encounters, others were prevalent only in one (e.g., guilt in the solo encounters). Feelings of pleasure, sexual desire, and empowerment manifested differently in the two contexts. There was more focus on self-knowledge, control, and physical pleasure in the solo encounters and more enjoyment of a partner's desire and intimacy in the partnered encounters. We examine the findings through a feminist lens and consider how race/ethnicity, sexual scripts, and contemporary societal contexts shape women's sexual lives.

Cosmetic emulsions containing plant extracts should be tested in a range of temperatures from 5°C to 40°C to be sure that they will be stable during general use by consumers and that plant extracts used as antioxidants do not accelerate oxidative degradation of their oil base. The oxidative stability of argan oil-in-water emulsions containing 1% and 5% commercial acerola, willow, and rose extracts [or 0.01% butylhydroxytoluene (BHT)], stored at 5°C and 20°C for 6 months and at 40°C for 4 weeks, was monitored by the determination of peroxide content. The antioxidant or pro-oxidant activities of extracts or BHT in emulsions were expressed as the protection factor (PF) and inhibition of peroxide formation (Ip). At the end of storage, 5% willow, 0.01% BHT, 1% willow, and 5% acerola were the most protective for emulsions stored at 5°C. At 20°C, the most effective was 0.01% BHT, 5% rose, and 5% acerola. At 40°C, inhibition of peroxide formation calculated for 1% rose, 5% acerola, and 0.01 % BHT was similar. Altogether, the results show that some plant extracts, depending on storage conditions, may act as pro-oxidants, whereas the others can be applied as natural antioxidants instead of synthetic BHT.

This paper estimates the suitability of the strongly basic anion exchangers, Dowex PSR2 and Dowex PSR3, as sorbents of nickel ions in aqueous solutions. These actions are aimed at searching for new solutions due to the growing discharge of nickel into wastewaters, primarily due to its addition to steel. The nickel sorption experiments were conducted under static conditions and resulted in the optimization of pH, phase contact time, initial solution concentration, and temperature. The next step was to calculate the kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic parameters. Moreover, the ion exchangers were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and CHN elemental analysis. It was found that the sorption process was most effective at pH 6 after 240 min and at the temperature of 293 K. The values of the thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption was exothermic and spontaneous. The physicochemical analyses combined with the experimental research enabled determination of the sorption mechanism of Ni(II) ions.

Due to the high content of bioactive substances, beetroot and its preserves might be a valuable constituent of a diet. Research into the antioxidant capacity and content of nitrate (III) and (V) in beetroot-based dietary supplements (DSs) worldwide is limited. The Folin-Ciocalteu method, CUPRAC, DPPH, and Griess methods were used to determine total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, nitrites, and nitrates content in fifty DSs and twenty beetroot samples. Moreover, the safety of products was evaluated because of the concentration of nitrites, nitrates, and the correctness of labelling. The research showed that a serving of fresh beetroot provides significantly more antioxidants, nitrites, and nitrates than most daily portions of DSs. Product P9 provided the highest dose of nitrates (169 mg/daily dose). However, in most cases, the consumption of DSs would be associated with a low health value. The acceptable daily intake was not exceeded in the cases of nitrites (0.0015-0.55%) and nitrates (0.056-48%), assuming that the supplementation followed the manufacturer's recommendation. According to European and Polish regulations, 64% of the products tested did not meet all the requirements for labelling food packaging. The findings point to the need for tighter regulation of DSs, as their consumption might be dangerous.

Media reports have caused a significant drop in confidence in the AstraZeneca ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 COVID-19 vector vaccine (Vaxzevria, AstraZeneca Södertälje, Sweden). This has caused many people, already vaccinated with the first dose of AstraZeneca, to refuse vaccination with this product. On the other hand, the increased demand for mRNA vaccines has resulted in a greater shortage of mRNA vaccines and cases of people being vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine after the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccine (Comirnaty, Pfizer/BioNTech, Mainz, Germany). Moreover, currently, 60.9% of the global population have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while only 10% of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose. Even less people are fully vaccinated. The present pilot study evaluated the administration of half doses of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines and included the enrollment of 26 subjects who were vaccinated with a different vaccine the first and second time. The reference group included individuals undergoing vaccination with two full doses of the Pfizer vaccine (21-day interval) monitored for their antibody levels as part of a parallel study. The distribution of antibody levels was not significantly different between those who received the Pfizer vaccine alone and those receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine plus Pfizer or Pfizer and AstraZeneca. To prepare for the next pandemic waves, solving the problem of the matching of booster vaccine to the previously received doses would be advisable. The topic is important and emerging as most of the population in low-income countries is still not vaccinated. We strongly believe that vaccine equity is the most important aspect of vaccination strategies.

PURPOSE: The purpose is to identify objective quantitative parameters for a more accurate evaluation of gait imbalance and relate it to Body Mass Index and age. METHODS: 25 multiple sclerosis (MS) and 30 healthy people (CG) aged between 22 and 66 years old (50.4 ± 9.5) were examined in static and dynamic tasks. The demographic data were as follows: body mass (72.4 ± 18.4 kg in CG vs. 66.8 ± 11.5 kg in MS); body height (1.78 ± 0.15 m in CG vs. 1.70 ± 0.11 m in MS); BMI (24.7 ± 4.5 kg/m2 in CG vs. 23.5 ± 3.0 kg/m2 in MS). First, all individuals remained static for baropodometric, pulse and saturation evaluation. Later on, a 6-minute walk and timed up and go tests were performed and additionally included quantitative measurements by barometry and pulse oximeter. RESULTS: The dynamic condition revealed meaningful differences in the foot surface and hindfoot loading, in addition to foot max. loading between study groups. TUG disclosed significantly different results between groups in time and the number of steps. For MS in statics, the moderate positive correlations between BMI and the right forefoot and right hindfoot, and in MS statics, the correlation of the age vs. maximal left foot loading, forefoot loading and hindfoot loading was observed. In the dynamic, the age and plantar angle of the foot had weak relation. CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative parameters defining balance deviations of MS are related to BMI and age in statics and dynamics, therefore should be taken into account during MS imbalance assessment.

We report a case of monitoring the antibody response to the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine of a 50-year-old female diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis undergoing treatment with methotrexate (MTX). Antibody levels were measured 21 days after dose 1 (i.e., on the day of dose 2) and then 8, 14 and 30 days after dose 2 with Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S assay (Roche Diagnostics). Patient showed a negative result after dose 1 and had the serum sample retested using a LIAISON® SARS-CoV-2 TrimericS IgG assay (DiaSorin), which showed a positive result. Subsequent samples were tested using both assays. Antibody levels kept increasing but at a much slower rate than in patients not receiving any immunomodulatory therapies. Other research indicates that among patients with autoimmune diseases, those receiving disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) have higher COVID-19 mortality than those treated with tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFis). These results indicate the need for people with autoimmune diseases to be carefully observed following vaccinations, including testing of antibody levels, and treated as potentially at risk until the effect of vaccination is confirmed. The different available vaccines should also be tested to verify their usefulness in the case of people with autoimmune diseases and those who take different immunomodulatory medications.

Effects of the phenolic fraction from Hippophae rhamnoides fruits on the production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS, a marker of lipid peroxidation) and the generation of superoxide anion (O2 (-∙)) in human blood platelets (resting platelets and platelets stimulated by a strong physiological agonist, thrombin) were studied in vitro. We also examined antioxidant properties of this fraction against human plasma lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation induced by a strong biological oxidant, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or H2O2/Fe (a donor of hydroxyl radicals). The tested fraction of H. rhamnoides (0.5- 50 µg/mL; the incubation time: 15 and 60 min) inhibited lipid peroxidation induced by H2O2 or H2O2/Fe. The H. rhamnoides phenolic fraction inhibited not only plasma lipid peroxidation, but also plasma protein carbonylation stimulated by H2O2 or H2O2/Fe. Moreover, the level of O2 (-∙) in platelets significantly decreased. In comparative experiments, the H. rhamnoides fraction was a more effective antioxidant than aronia extract or grape seed extract (at the highest tested concentration, 50 µg/mL). The obtained results suggest that H. rhamnoides fruits may be a new, promising source of natural compounds with antioxidant and antiplatelet activity beneficial not only for healthy people, but also for those with oxidative stress-associated diseases.
