RESUMEN

An electromagnetic field (EMF) has been shown to have various stimulatory or inhibitory effects on microorganisms. Over the years, growing interest in this topic led to numerous discoveries suggesting the potential applicability of EMF in biotechnological processes. Among these observations are stimulative effects of this physical influence resulting in intensified biomass production, modification of metabolic activity, or pigments secretion. In this review, we present the current state of the art and underline the main findings of the application of EMF in bioprocessing and their practical meaning in process engineering using examples selected from studies on bacteria, archaea, microscopic fungi and yeasts, viruses, and microalgae. All biological data are presented concerning the classification of EMF. Furthermore, we aimed to highlight missing parts of contemporary knowledge and indicate weak spots in the approaches found in the literature.

RESUMEN

In this work, the characteristics of saccharose (sucrose)-modified TiO2 (C/TiO2) photocatalysts obtained using a hydrothermal method at low temperature (100 °C) are presented. The influence of C/TiO2 on survivability and enzyme activity (catalase and superoxide dismutase) of Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (ATCC 29425) and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis (ATCC 49461) under UV-A and artificial solar light (ASL) were examined. The obtained TiO2-1%-S-100 photocatalysts were capable of total E. coli and S. epidermidis inactivation under ASL irradiation in less than 1 h. In addition, the impacts of sugars on the photocatalytic activity and disinfection performance are discussed.

RESUMEN

This work presents a literature review on the biological activity of S-carvone, geraniol and derivatives of these compounds, which are formed in the process of isomerization (during the process of geraniol isomerization, oxidation products of this compound are also obtained). Moreover, this work presents preliminary microbiological tests of creams with the addition of these biologically active compounds: S-carvone, geraniol, carvacrol (an S-carvone isomerization product), nerol (a geraniol isomerization product), linalool (a geraniol isomerization product) and citral (a geraniol oxidation product). Because the post-reaction mixture obtained after the S-carvone isomerization has a relatively simple composition, it was also added to creams and tested without isolating pure compounds. This may be a cheaper alternative to creams prepared with the addition of pure compounds. The mixture obtained after the geraniol isomerization process has a very complex composition; therefore, only compounds with the lowest molecular weight and are easily commercially available were selected for studies. The content of the tested compounds in the creams ranged from 0.5 to 3 wet%. The following microorganisms were selected for microbiological tests: the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli K12, the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus epidermidis, and the fungi Candida albicans, Trichophyton rubrum, Aspergillus niger, and Penicillium chrysogenum. A content of 3% carvacrol, nerol, geraniol and citral inhibited the growth of E. coli, and attenuated the growth of C. albicans and T. rubrum. On the other hand, 3% carvacrol and citral only poorly attenuated the growth of the mould fungi P. chrysogenum and A. niger.

RESUMEN

Preparation of TiO2 using the hydrothermal treatment in NH4OH solution and subsequent thermal heating at 500-700 °C in Ar was performed in order to introduce some titania surface defects. The highest amount of oxygen vacancies and Ti3+ surface defects were observed for a sample heat-treated at 500 °C. The presence of these surface defects enhanced photocatalytic properties of titania towards the deactivation of two bacteria species, E. coli and S. epidermidis, under artificial solar lamp irradiation. Further modification of TiO2 was targeted towards the doping of Cu species. Cu doping was realized through the impregnation of the titania surface by Cu species supplied from various copper salts in an aqueous solution and the subsequent heating at 500 °C in Ar. The following precursors were used as a source of Cu: CuSO4, CuNO3 or Cu(CH3COO)2. Cu doping was performed for raw TiO2 after a hydrothermal process with and without NH4OH addition. The obtained results indicate that Cu species were deposited on the titania surface defects in the case of reduced TiO2, but on the TiO2 without NH4OH modification, Cu species were attached through the titania adsorbed hydroxyl groups. Cu doping on TiO2 increased the absorption of light in the visible range. Rapid inactivation of E. coli within 30 min was obtained for the ammonia-reduced TiO2 heated at 500 °C and TiO2 doped with Cu from CuSO4 solution. Photocatalytic deactivation of S. epidermidis was greatly enhanced through Cu doping on TiO2. Impregnation of TiO2 with CuSO4 was the most effective for inactivation of both E. coli and S. epidermidis.

RESUMEN

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most prevalent pathogens associated with several types of biofilm-based infections, including infections of chronic wounds. Mature staphylococcal biofilm is extremely hard to eradicate from a wound and displays a high tendency to induce recurring infections. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to investigate in vitro the interaction between S. aureus biofilm and fibroblast cells searching for metabolites that could be considered as potential biomarkers of critical colonization and infection. Utilizing advanced microscopy and microbiological methods to examine biofilm formation and the staphylococcal infection process, we were able to distinguish 4 phases of biofilm development. The analysis of staphylococcal biofilm influence on the viability of fibroblasts allowed us to pinpoint the moment of critical colonization-12 h post contamination. Based on the obtained model we performed a metabolomics analysis by 1H NMR spectroscopy to provide new insights into the pathophysiology of infection. We identified a set of metabolites related to the switch to anaerobic metabolism that was characteristic for staphylococcal biofilm co-cultured with fibroblast cells. The data presented in this study may be thus considered a noteworthy but preliminary step in the direction of developing a new, NMR-based tool for rapid diagnosing of infection in a chronic wound.

RESUMEN

The photocatalytic deactivation of volatile organic compounds and mold fungi using TiO2 modified with mono- and bimetallic (Pt, Cu, Ag) particles is reported in this study. The mono- and bimetal-modified (Pt, Cu, Ag) titanium(IV) oxide photocatalysts were prepared by chemical reduction method and characterized using XRD, XPS, DR/UV-Vis, BET, and TEM analysis. The effect of incident light, type and content of mono- and bimetallic nanoparticles deposited on titanium(IV) oxide was studied. Photocatalytic activity of as-prepared nanocomposites was examined in the gas phase using LEDs array. High photocatalytic activity of Ag/Pt-TiO2 and Cu/Pt-TiO2 in the reaction of toluene degradation resulted from improved efficiency of interfacial charge transfer process, which was consistent with the fluorescence quenching effect revealed by photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra. The photocatalytic deactivation of Penicillium chrysogenum, a pathogenic fungi present in the indoor environment, especially in a damp or water-damaged building using mono- and bimetal-modified (Pt, Cu, Ag) titanium(IV) oxide was evaluated for the first time. TiO2 modified with mono- and bimetallic NPs of Ag/Pt, Cu, and Ag deposited on TiO2 exhibited improved fungicidal activity under LEDs illumination than pure TiO2 .

RESUMEN

Octahedral anatase particles (OAP) with eight equivalent {101} facets and decahedral anatase particles (DAP) with two additional {001} facets were modified with nanoparticles of noble metals (silver, copper, gold and platinum) by photodeposition, and applied for inactivation of Escherichia coli K12. XRD, DRS, XPS and STEM analyses confirmed the presence of noble metals nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of faceted titania samples. Both OAP and DAP samples modified with silver and copper exhibited high bactericidal activities under visible light irradiation. It was also found that DAP under UV irradiation showed surprisingly high bactericidal activity, which could be attributed to efficient generation of reactive oxygen species, due to intrinsic properties of DAP, i.e., charge carriers' separation (migration of electrons and holes to {101} and {001} facets, respectively). However, an unexpected decrease in activity after DAP modification with gold and platinum NPs (mainly deposited on {101} facets) suggested that bacteria cells were directly decomposed on DAP surface. SEM images revealed that silver-modified samples caused severe damages of cell walls and membranes, due to antibacterial properties of silver (in the dark) and photocatalytic effect under visible and UV irradiation.

RESUMEN

The antibacterial activity of concrete plates loaded with various titania photocatalysts was investigated. The target in bacteria testing was Escherichia coli K12. The presence of photocatalysts in the concrete matrix at a dose of 10 wt.% improved the antibacterial properties, which became significant depending on the type of the added photocatalyst. Total inactivation of E. coli irradiated under artificial solar light was observed on the concrete plates loaded with the following photocatalysts: TiO2/N,CMeOH-300, TiO2/N,CEtOH-100, TiO2/N,CisoPrOH-100 and TiO2/N-300. The modified Hom disinfection kinetic model was found as a best-fit model for the obtained results. The presence of nitrogen and carbon in the photocatalysts structure, as well as crystallite size, surface area and porosity, contributed to the increase of antibacterial properties of concrete plates.

RESUMEN

In this paper, the antibacterial activity of titanium dioxide modified with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was presented. TiO2/rGO photocatalysts were prepared by the hydrothermal method under elevated pressure at 180°C and heated at 100°C in Ar flow. The obtained photocatalysts were characterized by means of XRD, FTIR/DRS, UV-vis/DR, Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The carbon content was also examined. FTIR/DRS and Raman analysis confirmed the presence of rGO in the TiO2 structure, suggesting a successful modification. The antimicrobial photoactivity of photocatalysts was conducted against E. coli under an artificial solar light. The results show that all TiO2/rGO photocatalysts exhibited an antibacterial activity higher than unmodified TiO2. The best result was found for sample with 1.5wt% additive of reduced graphene oxide. In this case, total inactivation of E. coli was noticed after 75min of irradiation. It was found that the presence of rGO in sample improves the antimicrobial activity.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In public and residential buildings, fungi are usually found in the dust or growing on building materials medium such. It has been known that a number of their spores may contaminate the indoor environment and deteriorate air quality in accommodation spaces. Previously designed air cleaning systems do not guarantee a complete removal of agents harmful to humans and animals. Therefore, there is a great need to develop a new solution to remove molds from indoor air. In recent years, photocatalysis based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been proposed as an effective method for air pollutants removal. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of TiO2 activated under artificial sun light (UV-VIS - ultraviolet - visible spectroscopy) on survival of fungi Penicillium chrysogenum and Aspergillus niger. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The commercial P 25 (Aeroxide P 25, Evonik, Germany) and nitrogen modified titanium dioxide (N-TiO2) were used. The microbiological study was performed using Penicillium chrysogenum and Aspergillus niger fungi. The survival of fungi was determined on the basis of changes in their concentration. RESULTS: It was found that N-TiO2 has a stronger antifungal activity against P. chrysogenum and A. niger than P 25. For N-TiO2, the complete elimination of molds was possible after 3 h under artificial solar light activation. The minimal concentration of photocatalyst was 0.01 g×dm-3 (P. chrysogenum) and 0.1 g×dm-3 (A. niger). CONCLUSIONS: The nitrogen modification of titanium dioxide produced expected results and N-TiO2 presented good antifungal activity. The findings of the presented investigation can lead to the development of air filter to be used for removal of harmful agents (including molds) from indoor environment. Med Pr 2018;69(1):59-65.

RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the antifungal activity of titanium dioxide activated by indoor light on Czapek Yeast Agar (CYA). METHODS: The agar plate method was used and titania P25 (Evonik) was added to the medium in the amount of 20 g.dm(-3). The control experiments without titania were also carried out. The water activity (a(w)) of the basal media was adjusted to 0.999, 0.997, 0.975, 0.950, 0.900 and 0.850 with sodium chloride. The photoactivity of titania was tested for six strains of potentially pathogenic fungi: Aspergillus versicolor (WB130, W11), Stachybotrys chartarum (STA1), Pseudallescheria boydii (AP25), Pseudallescheria ellipsoidea (ZUT1 2), Scedosporium apiospermum (ZUT1 1), Scedosporium aurantiacum (ZUT4BIS). After inoculation with fungal spore suspensions, one part of CYA plates was incubated in dark, while another part was daily exposed to indoor light for 12 hours per day.The plates were incubated at 25°C for 10 days. The daily growth rates (mm x day(-1)) were calculated from the linear regression equation. RESULTS: The CYA supplementation with titanium dioxide for different availability of water resulted in the decrease of fungal growth rates in dark and under irradiation. The lowest and the highest rates of daily growth were obtained in the presence and absence of titania for the low and high water activity (0.900 a(w) and 0.999 a(w)), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Fungi did not grow on all examined media with the lowest water activity (a(w) ≤ 0.850) which confirmed necessity of water for their growth. The fungi Pseudallescheria-Scedosporium were the most sensitive to titania and water activity, while the strains of Aspergillus versicolor were the most resistant to the presence of titania and lack of water. It has been shown that the lack of accessible water resulted in the strongest action of titanium dioxide both in dark and under irradiation. For the lowest amount of accessible water irradiation of titania resulted in complete inhibition of fungal growth. While, under dark conditions, titania presence enhanced the growth of persistent fungi, i.e., Aspergillus versicolor. It is assumed that these fungi could obtain water from the water-rich titania surface.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we study synthesis and characteristics of mesoporous silica nanotubes modified by titanium dioxide, as well as their antimicrobial properties and influence on mitochondrial activity of mouse fibroblast L929. Nanocrystalized titania is confined in mesopores of silica nanotubes and its light activated antibacterial response is revealed. The analysis of the antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli. (ATCC 25922) shows strong enhancement during irradiation with the artificial visible and ultraviolet light in respect to the commercial catalyst and control sample free from the nanomaterials. In darkness, the mesoporous silica/titania nanostructures exhibited antibacterial activity dependent on the stirring speed of the suspension containing nanomaterials. Obtained micrograph proved internalization of the sample into the microorganism trough the cell membrane. The analysis of the mitochondrial activity and amount of lactate dehydrogenase released from mouse fibroblast cells L929 in the presence of the sample were determined with LDH and WST1 assays, respectively. The synthesized silica/titania antibacterial agent also exhibits pronounced photoinduced inactivation of the bacterial growth under the artificial visible and UV light irritation in respect to the commercial catalyst. Additionally, mesoporous silica/titania nanotubes were characterized in details by means of high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), XRD and BET Isotherm.

RESUMEN

A novel photopolymerizable (meth)acrylate oligomer syrup modified with ferulic acid (FA) was verified as an antimicrobial coating binder against a biofilm of Staphylococcus epidermidis. A solution-free UV-LED-initiated photopolymerization process of aliphatic (meth)acrylates and styrene was performed to prepare the oligomer syrup. The influence of ferulic acid on the UV crosslinking process of the varnish coatings (kinetic studies using photo-DSC) as well as their chemical structure (FTIR) and mechanical (adhesion, hardness), optical (gloss, DOI parameter), and antibacterial properties against S. epidermidis were investigated. The photo-DSC results revealed that FA has a positive effect on reducing the early occurrence of slowing processes and has a favorable effect on the monomer conversion increment. It turned out, unexpectedly, that the more FA in the coating, the greater its adhesion to a glass substrate and hardness. The coating containing 0.9 wt. part of FA exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties against S. epidermidis, i.e., the bacterial number after 24 h was only 1.98 log CFU/mL. All the coatings showed relatively high hardness, gloss (>80 G.U.), and DOI parameter values (30-50 a.u.).

RESUMEN

Mould fungi are serious threats to humans and animals (allergen) and might be the main cause of COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis. The common methods of disinfection are not highly effective against fungi due to the high resistance of fungal spores. Recently, photocatalysis has attracted significant attention towards antimicrobial action. Outstanding properties of titania photocatalysts have already been used in many areas, e.g., for building materials, air conditioner filters, and air purifiers. Here, the efficiency of photocatalytic methods to remove fungi and bacteria (risk factors for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 co-infection) is presented. Based on the relevant literature and own experience, there is no doubt that photocatalysis might help in the fight against microorganisms, and thus prevent the severity of COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMEN

This study presents a relatively low-cost method for modifying TiO2-based materials for photocatalytic bacterial inactivation. The photocatalytic inactivation of Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus epidermidis) bacteria using modified sulphated TiO2 was studied. The modification focused on the reduction of TiO2 by ammonia agents and hydrogen at 400-450 °C. The results showed a high impact of sulphate species on the inactivation of E. coli. The presence of these species generated acid sites on TiO2, which shifted the pH of the reacted titania slurry solution to lower values, around 4.6. At such a low pH, TiO2 was positively charged. The ammonia solution caused the removal of sulphate species from TiO2. On the other hand, hydrogen and ammonia molecules accelerated the removal of sulphur species from TiO2, as did heating it to 450 °C. Total inactivation of E. coli was obtained within 30 min of simulated solar light irradiation on TiO2 heat-treated at 400 °C in an atmosphere of Ar or NH3. The S. epidermidis strain was more resistant to photocatalytic oxidation. The contact of these bacteria with the active titania surface is important, but a higher oxidation force is necessary to destroy their cell membrane walls because of their thicker cell wall than E. coli. Therefore, the ability of a photocatalyst to produce ROS (reactive oxidative species) will determine its ability to inactivate S. epidermidis. An additional advantage of the studies presented is the inactivation of bacteria after a relatively short irradiation time (30 min), which does not often happen with photocatalysts not modified with noble metals. The modification methods presented represent a robust and inexpensive alternative to photocatalytic inactivation of bacteria.

RESUMEN

This paper presents the synthesis and characteristics of Fe3O4/C/TiO2 hybrid magnetic nanomaterials with antibacterial properties. The materials used were obtained using a microwave-assisted two-stage precipitation method. In the first stage, magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4) were prepared with the precipitation method, during which an additional glucose layer was placed on them. Next, the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was covered by TiO2. It was observed that the addition of carbon and titanium dioxide caused a decrease in the average size of magnetite crystallites from 15.6 to 9.2 nm. Materials with varying contents of anatase phase were obtained. They were characterized in terms of phase composition, crystallite size, specific surface area, surface charge and the kinds of function groups on the surface. The results show a successful method of synthesizing hybrid magnetic nanoparticles, stable in a solution, with antibacterial properties under direct solar light irradiation. Compared to classical materials based on TiO2 and used for water disinfection, the obtained photocatalytic nanomaterials have magnetic properties. Owing to this fact, they can be easily removed from water once their activity under direct irradiance in a given process has completed.

RESUMEN

Commercial titania photocatalystP25 was chosen for an antifungal property examination due to it exhibiting one of the highest photocatalytic activities among titania photocatalysts. Titania P25 was homogenized first (HomoP25) and then annealed at different temperatures. Additionally, HomoP25 was modified with 0.5 wt% or 2.0 wt% of platinum by a photodeposition method. The obtained samples were characterized by diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoabsorption spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, photocatalytic activity was tested for methanol dehydrogenation under UV/vis irradiation. The spore-destroying effect of photocatalysts was investigated against two mold fungal species, i.e., Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger. Both the mycelium growth and API ZYM (estimation of enzymatic activity) tests were applied for the assessment of antifungal effect. It was found that annealing caused a change of surface properties of the titania samples, i.e., an increase in the noncrystalline part, a growth of particles and enhanced oxygen adsorption on its surface, which resulted in an increase in both the hydrogen evolution rate and the antifungal effect. Titania samples annealed at 300−500 °C were highly active during 60-min UV/vis irradiation, inhibiting the germination of both fungal spores, whereas titania modification with platinum (0.5 and 2.0 wt%) had negligible effect, despite being highly active for hydrogen evolution. The control experiments revealed the lack of titania activity in the dark, as well as high resistance of fungi for applied UV/vis irradiation in the absence of photocatalysts. Moreover, the complete inhibition of 19 hydrolases, secreted by both tested fungi, was noted under UV/vis irradiation on the annealed P25 sample. It is proposed that titania photocatalysts of large particle sizes (>150 nm) and enriched surface with oxygen might efficiently destroy fungal structures under mild irradiation conditions and, thus, be highly promising as covering materials for daily products.

RESUMEN

This work presents the results ofa study which concerns the influence of rotating magnetic field (RMF) on the antibacterial performance of commercial pine essential oil. A suspension of essential oil in saline solution and Escherichia coli were exposed to the rotating magnetic Afield (the frequency of electrical current supplied by a RMF generator f = 1-50 Hz; the averaged values of magnetic induction in the cross-section of the RMF generator B = 13.13 to - 19.92 mT, time of exposure t = 160 min, temperature of incubation 37 °C). The chemical composition of pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) essential oil was determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main constituents were α-pinene (28.58%), ß-pinene (17.79%), δ-3-carene (14.17%) and limonene (11.58%). The present study indicates the exposition to the RMF, as compared to the unexposed controls causing an increase in the efficacy of antibacterial properties of pine oil. We have shown that rotating magnetic fields (RMF) at a frequency, f, between 25 Hz to and 50 Hz increased the antimicrobial efficiency of oil a concentration lower than 50%.

RESUMEN

One-hundred-nanometer films consisting of silver, copper, and gold nanocrystallites were prepared, and their antibacterial properties were quantitatively measured. The magnetron-sputtering method was used for the preparation of the metallic films over the glass plate. Single- and double-layer films were manufactured. The films were thoroughly characterized with the XRD, SEM, EDS, and XPS methods. The antibacterial activity of the samples was investigated. Gram-negative Escherichia coli, strain K12 ATCC 25922 (E. coli), and Gram-positive Staphylococcus epidermidis, ATCC 49461 (S. epidermidis), were used in the microbial tests. The crystallite size was about 30 nm in the cases of silver and gold and a few nanometers in the case of copper. Significant oxidation of the copper films was proven. The antibacterial efficacy of the tested samples followed the order: Ag/Cu > Au/Cu > Cu. It was concluded that such metallic surfaces may be applied as contact-killing materials for a more effective fight against bacteria and viruses.

RESUMEN

Titanium and its compounds are broadly used in both industrial and domestic products, including jet engines, missiles, prostheses, implants, pigments, cosmetics, food, and photocatalysts for environmental purification and solar energy conversion. Although titanium/titania-containing materials are usually safe for human, animals and environment, increasing concerns on their negative impacts have been postulated. Accordingly, this review covers current knowledge on the toxicity of titania and titanium, in which the behaviour, bioavailability, mechanisms of action, and environmental impacts have been discussed in detail, considering both light and dark conditions. Consequently, the following conclusions have been drawn: (i) titania photocatalysts rarely cause health and environmental problems; (ii) despite the lack of proof, the possible carcinogenicity of titania powders to humans is considered by some authorities; (iii) titanium alloys, commonly applied as implant materials, possess a relatively low health risk; (iv) titania microparticles are less toxic than nanoparticles, independent of the means of exposure; (v) excessive accumulation of titanium in the environment cannot be ignored; (vi) titanium/titania-containing products should be clearly marked with health warning labels, especially for pregnant women and young children; (vi) a key knowledge gap is the lack of comprehensive data about the environmental content and the influence of titania/titanium on biodiversity and the ecological functioning of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
